Five things Dana Point should know this week Five Candidates Running for Three Seats for SCWD Board THE LATEST: The South Coast Water District will hold its election for three available seats on Tuesday, November 3—without any implementation of districts.

On Jan. 14, SCWD received a letter from the Law Offices of Phillip B. Greer, expressing concern that voting for SCWD’s at-large system appears to be racially polarized. The letter argues that this results in minority vote dilution and is a violation of the California Voting Rights Act of 2001.

“The Voting Rights Act disfavors the use of ‘at-large’ voting since this method allows voters in an entire jurisdiction to elect candidates to all open seats,” the letter states.

“I refer you to Sanchez v Modesto (2006).”

The letter asserts that at-large elections “dilute and impair minority voters and their ability to elect candidates more representative of their neighborhoods.”

Latinos make up nearly 18% of the Dana Point population, nearly 37% of the San Juan Capistrano population and nearly 17% of the San Clemente population. According to Greer, not a single Latino has been elected to the Board of Directors in the past 20 years.

On Feb. 27, the board of directors instructed legal counsel to meet with Greer in attempt to negotiate a settlement.

A resolution stemming from the meeting was brought back to the board and on April 23, the board approved the settlement. The settlement documents require two processes. One relates to the CVRA process leading to By-Division Elections; the other relates to evaluating whether a feasible pathway exists to overcome the asserted “disenfranchisement” of certain District customers who are ineligible to vote in District elections.

The CVRA requires a total of five public hearings. During the final public hearing, the board will decide whether to change to by-division elections and the boundaries of any such divisions.

In accordance with the resolution, the board of directors conducted the first of five public hearings on June 11. When the results of the 2020 United States Census are released, the four additional CVRA hearings are to be conducted in 2021, with the final hearing on or before Oct. 31, 2021, when an ordinance establishing the Dana Point Times August 14-20, 2020

director election division boundaries is expected to be adopted. Under the settlement, deadlines will be flexible to allow for unknown limitations on public hearings due to COVID-19.

As for the 2020 election, voters in the district’s service area, which includes the communities of Dana Point, South Laguna Beach, and areas of San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano, will select three directors from five qualified candidates.

Incumbent Director Rick Erkeneff, a Dana Point resident and vice chairman of the South Orange County Chapter of Surfrider Foundation, is running for reelection.

“As SCWD Vice President, I have worked with our directors and staff to prioritize repair and maintenance of aging infrastructure through cost-effective solutions,” Erkeneff said in his statement. “I support the continued study of the viability of environmentally sensitive, responsible ocean desalination. My leadership has been evident through my voting record, and I will continue the path

forward, helping our community navigate future drought and shrinking water supply issues.”

Incumbent Director Douglas Erdman, a civil engineer, is also seeking reelection. According to his statement, he aims to maintain SCWD’s infrastructure and deliver quality water and sewer services while being mindful of the customer’s pocketbook.

“SCWD has several ongoing projects that would require a significant investment and directly impact the amount you pay for water and sewer services,” Erdman said.

“Some of these projects may have alternatives that could accomplish the same goals more efficiently with reduced costs.”

SCWD is currently pursuing the proposed Doheny Desalination Project in Dana Point. The project would cost $120 million, and the agency is currently struggling to garner partnerships to absorb the costs. If implemented, the Doheny Ocean Desalination Project would provide locally controlled water supply. Currently, SCWD imports 85-100% of its drinking water,

causing vulnerability during droughts, supply shortages and potentially during natural disasters.

A third incumbent director, Wayne Rayfield, will also appear on the ballot.

Rayfield is a retired engineer who is seeking to “build upon the work” that has been done and to continue fostering cost-saving partnerships with other agencies.

“As we face the financial issues that the pandemic has created for many of us, I pledge to you that I will be extra diligent as we seek increased efficiencies and continue to ensure that every expense is necessary and cost-effective,” Rayfield said. “We must also continue our efforts to protect our environment and expand the use of recycled water wherever possible.”

Scott Goldman, an environmental engineer, echoes the importance of partnering with neighboring agencies.

“My goals as a SCWD Director will be to assist the District, maintain existing infrastructure and to further ‘drought proof’ supplies where it makes economic sense,” Goldman said in his campaign statement. “My established relationships with management and directors of surrounding agencies, and thorough understanding of the issues, will benefit the District and its rate payers.”

Markus Lenger, the fifth candidate to appear on the ballot, is a nine-year resident of Capistrano Beach and 29-year resident of South Orange County. He is the founder of CleanBlu, a company focused on water reuse solutions.

“I am disturbed by the relentless pursuit of a single ‘solution’—a prohibitively expensive, power-guzzling desalination plant dependent on untried technology,” Lenger said. “The key to robust solutions is thoughtful consideration, independent analysis and an unbiased peer review of all practical, right-sized alternatives.”

A sixth candidate, Deborah Johnson, indicated her intent to run, but according to Orange County Registrar’s filing log, she did not qualify to appear on the ballot.

Gary Newkirk Announces Bid for District 4 Seat in Dana Point THE LATEST: Gary Newkirk is the second candidate to announce his run for the District 4 city council seat in Dana Point.

As a member of the community since 1997, Newkirk says he has a fundamental appreciation of the unique and diverse character of this historic area. He also says he is committed to encouraging responsible development, while honoring the city’s heritage and retaining its coastal village charm.

Their son Nick, now a junior at UC Santa Barbara, attended local public schools, graduating from Dana Hills High School.

He enjoyed several years of Dana Point Youth Baseball and at DHHS played baseball and ran cross-country.

“I first became interested in civic affairs when I served on the city’s Building Height Task Force in 2005. Our very diverse group worked cooperatively to develop zoning solutions for irregular or sloped residential lots, avoiding what had been a steady stream of contentious variance requests,” Newkirk said. “During two terms on the Planning Commission (2009 to 2015), including one year as Chair, I built a reputation as someone who could be trusted to encourage responsible development, code compliance and projects that reflected the character of our community, always ensuring that residents’ voices were heard.”

Newkirk cast one of the dissenting votes rejecting the Majestic (now Raintree) developer’s request for variances outside the resident-approved Town Center Plan.

“A subsequent successful appeal to Council angered residents who successfully launched Measure H to force the Council to seek ballot approval for any future changes to the plan,” Newkirk said.

After graduating from UCLA with a degree in Economics, Newkirk pursued a career as a stockbroker.

He later developed a career in sports photography, media marketing and business development. He volunteered as photographer for the TGR Foundation, Tiger Woods’ educational foundation that offers underrepresented students the resources and support needed to thrive in school and beyond.

As a contract photographer for publications such as Golf World/Golf Digest, and Allsport Photography (now Getty Images), Newkirk traveled to more than 450 tournaments.

“Despite having had the opportunity to visit some truly amazing locations, there’s no place I’d rather be than here in Dana Point,” Newkirk said. “This is our home, and we are here to stay. I would be honored to serve the Lantern District and the larger community on the Dana Point City Council. I pledge to continue to provide residents a voice as I seek to enhance and preserve our residential neighborhoods and our exceptional way of life.”

For the first time since Dana Point transitioned over to districted elections in 2018, the residents of Districts 4 and 5 will vote for a representative for their respective seats on city council.

In 2018, Districts 1, 2 and 3 voted in Councilmembers Joe Muller, Richard Viczorek and Jamey Federico, respectively, and they are currently serving their four-year terms. This year, constituents in Districts 4 and 5 will vote for their representatives. Councilmembers Debra Lewis and Paul Wyatt hold at-large seats that Districts 4 and 5 will replace.

According to Bebee’s candidate statement, he has managed “hundreds of employees of diverse backgrounds” and has aimed to inspire productivity and profitability for small businesses in California.

“My past successes are the result of my passion for people, positivity, and my persistent nature,” Bebee said in his statement.

“I started my family in Southern California, and have been contributing to the betterment of our state for over a decade.”

Dana Point Times’ attempts to reach Bebee for comment were unsuccessful as of press time.

Music Preserves Announces Online Course for American Music and Culture

history, geography and art as students build a timeline of American music.

The lessons, which are targeted for students in grades 7-12, integrate music appreciation with United States history and cultural studies. Developed for optimal distancelearning, the course is designed as a 12-week course in which students will receive one lesson and music playlist per week, including activities, discussion questions, video content, quizzes and a timeline of music history in the context of American history. Students will learn the history of blues, jazz, rock and roll, the British Invasion, soul music, country, rap, punk and more.

A version of the course was piloted in the fall of 2019 in Capistrano Unified School District.

“Music Preserves Foundation is in discussions with several school districts in Orange County and has plans to implement the course in local schools as early as 2021,” said Patti Compton, president of Music Preserves Foundation.

Music Preserves Foundation is a nonprofit organization founded by Compton and Anthony Small that aims to inspire and educate the community through the preservation and presentation of music by providing cultural enrichment opportunities for the community and educational music and cultural history programs for students in Orange County.

Remains of Marines, Sailor Recovered THE LATEST: The bodies of the U.S. Marines and sailor who died following a training exercise accident involving an

amphibious assault vehicle (AAV) off the coast of San Clemente Island late last month have been recovered, Marine officials announced on Friday, Aug. 7.

The seven Marines and one sailor, who were all assigned to the 15 Marine Expeditionary Unit and had gone missing after the accident on July 30, were located inside the AAV, which had sunk after it began to take on water during a return trip to the USS Somerset from the island.

In the Aug. 7 update from I Marine Expeditionary Force, officials said the recovered Marines and sailor were to be transferred to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, where their bodies were to be prepared for burial.

“Our hearts and thoughts of the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit are with the families of our recovered Marines and Sailor,” Col. Christopher Bronzi, commanding officer of the 15th MEU, said in a statement. “We hope the successful recovery of our fallen warriors brings some measure of comfort.”

The deceased service members were among a team of 16 who had been aboard the AAV during what was described as a routine training exercise. The other eight service members had been recovered the day of the accident.

One of those initially recovered Marines, 19-year-old Lance Cpl. Guillermo Perez of New Braunfels, Texas, was pronounced dead on the scene. His remains, Marine officials said, were transferred to Dover AFB on Aug. 5.

Two other Marines who were found on July 30 were in critical condition and had to be taken to a La Jolla hospital.

The sunken AAV was also recovered from the ocean, according to I MEF. WHAT’S NEXT: The cause of the accident remained under investigation as of Aug. 7.

SafeDineOC Program Offers Grant for Orange County Restaurants As part of the SafeDineOC Restaurant Program, the Orange County Board of Supervisors has allocated $10 million in Federal CARES Act funding to support local restaurants that are safely reopening.

Restaurants are eligible for $1,000 in reimbursements for CARES Act-qualified purchases, such as masks, gloves, and other personal protective equipment (PPE), site reconfiguration, employee training, cleaning supplies, etc.

The application period for the grant program began on Aug. 6 and ends in 60 days, or whenever funding is fully allocated, whichever occurs first.

If there are multiple, separate-site restaurants under one owner, each restaurant location may apply for a $1,000 grant. Restaurants must submit a separate application for each location.

Receipts for CARES Act-qualified purchases are required for final reimbursement grant payment. Receipts for purchases made from March 1, 2020 to September 30, 2020 are acceptable.

Approved restaurants participating in the SafeDineOC program must post their attestation in plain sight for their customers and will also have their name featured on the website.

County Moves Marriage Services to Honda Center In efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19, effective Monday, August 3, Orange County Clerk-Recorder Hugh Nguyen moved his department’s marriage services to Honda Center in Anaheim for a second time this year.

Marriage services at Honda Center are by appointment only from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Honda Center is located at 2695 E. Katella Ave, corner of Katella and S. Douglass Road. Customers must complete their marriage license application and make an appointment online at ocrecorder.com/services/marriage. No walk-in service will be available at this time.

Fairmont Schools Holds Ribbon-Cutting for New Campus Fairmont Schools—a private school institution—held a ribbon-cutting for their new location in San Juan Capistrano on Thursday, Aug. 6. The campus is at the former Saddleback Valley Christian School location on Oso Road.

School officials were greeted by representatives from the San Juan Capistrano Chamber of Commerce and other organizations.

Laura’s House is an Orange County nonprofit providing domestic violence-related services. The Partnership represents more than 1,000 organizations and allied groups across the state.

JSerra Students Educating Others on Dangers of Vaping Rising junior students at JSerra Catholic High School are educating other young people on the harmful effects of vaping through their project called “EduVape.”

Dillon Kim, Brayden Daly, and Arav Patel have held virtual assemblies with young people about the health consequences of vaping. The three friends got the idea for their program after a DEA officer spoke at their school about the hazards of substance abuse and secondhand smoke.

A letter writer in a recent San Clemente Times Letter to the Editor is heaping an awful lot of blame for the situation at San Onofre on a congressman who has been in office since January 2019.

I see that he supports a candidate from the other political party, San Juan Capistrano Councilmember Brian Maryott, for Congress.

I want to remind the letter writer that this district, in which San Onofre resides, has been led by congressmen from Maryott’s party (Republicans) since 1993.

They were in office when the clock ran out in 1998 on getting a federal disposal site for spent fuel. They were in office when San Onofre was handed the responsibility of coming up with an on-site storage system for the spent fuel. They were in office when the robust storage and transport casks developed by us at San Onofre were replaced by the current storage-only units.

The letter writer is welcome to vote for whichever party he chooses, but please do not expect the voters of this district to return to office the party under which our situation was allowed to develop.

TO WEAR OR NOT TO WEAR— UN-MASKING THE MASK ISSUE GREGG LANCER, San Clemente

If I don’t wear a mask, I’m treated and viewed poorly and negatively. And “nomaskers” oftentimes look at mask wearers the same way or with similarly divisive perspectives.

Based on my own research I’ve conducted about face coverings and most people’s use of them, I believe that, scientifically, masks are dangerous and ineffective. The evidence I’ve collected would far exceed my word-count maximum for this letter if I revealed it all.

Anyone that wears a PPE mask for their occupation knows that handling them throughout the day, with unwashed hands, greatly reduces their cleanliness and their efficiency.

Exhaling your own heated carbon dioxide into a small chamber where one re-inhales their own CO2, a waste product, (and the moist fibers of the material in the face covering), is, in my well-informed opinion, dangerous to the human body’s respiratory, nervous and immune systems.

The results of this “mask issue” in our society today: • Massive amounts of misinformation on all forms of media, therefore causing confusion and division.

• Many with legitimate health or breathing conditions, legally exempt from being required to wear a mask, are denied access to stores.

• Civil liberties being violated, with unlawful discrimination issues being committed.

• Being shamed, harassed and/or intimidated in public whether wearing a mask or not.

Based on the vast uncertainty and inability to prove their efficacy in virus protection, it appears that homemade face coverings are purely fashion and do almost nothing to protect anyone from a virus.

Couple that with the “wearing instructions” located on the outside of the packaging of masks, where they clearly

In discussing with my neighbor, a 50-year-old Trump supporter, the news that the President asked Woody Johnson, our ambassador to Britain, to ask the British government to steer the British Open golf tournament to Trump’s Turnberry golf resort in Scotland, which would have pumped millions of dollars into Trump’s financially failing resort, my neighbor’s reply was, “So what; he is just trying to make money for his company.”

If this is the attitude of many Americans today, our democracy is in real trouble.

At the Movies: ‘Ravage’ Is a Familiar Ride for Horror Fans

F

or all the influence and impact that classic movies have on pop culture, there’s also one unfortunate aspect that needs to be acknowledged.

It feels like for every great, acclaimed film released, there are dozens of lesser-quality knockoffs of the movie.

For horror, this definitely is the case with Tobe Hooper’s cult classic slasher, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974). Teddy Grennan’s new indie horror flick Ravage—playing drive-ins and on VOD—is no exception to the accusation. Not even bothering to be subtle about the distinct style over substance going on in the feature, Ravage has the bare minimum of plot, but with what appears to at least be self-awareness in its flashy direction.

When she goes to the police to report what she believes was torture, she’s quickly kidnapped by the perpetrators and is now on her own to escape their clutches deep in a barn in the middle of the wilderness.

Grennan’s new feature was originally titled Swing Low, and would be a reference to the traditional gospel-folk song “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” which appears remixed on the soundtrack for a certain scene. Jacques Brautber’s music score in general is one of the more intriguing elements of the new movie, but the new title of Ravage is more aptly used because of its basic gore sequences throughout the film.

Dexter-Jones, who has been in her share of schlocky B-movie horror films such as Jordan Galland’s Ava’s Possessions (2015) and Tara Subkoff’s #Horror (2016), is right at home as the protagonist who must carry essentially every scene. Film legend Bruce Dern even makes an appearance as the only big name in the cast. Ravage doesn’t really bring anything new to the horror/ slasher genres, but it does have enough for fans of this type of movie. DP Page 8

COVID-19’s Effect on the Environment and Your Health

A

s the months go by, we can’t help but see the effects that COVID-19 has had in our lives. As a culinary nutritionist and fitness professional, I know individuals who have embraced the time spent at home with consistent exercise and preparing of meals—and then there are the rest of us.

The ability to order takeout food of any kind from your mobile device round the clock, which often shows up at your door for consumption within the hour, has really catapulted the obesity pandemic during this crisis.

And that doesn’t address the amount of trash generated from these meals. We really need to take stock in the damage that the merging of these pandemics has taken on society, and step back to assess how we might minimize the damage.

In good conscience, I cannot fail to highlight the environmental impact COVID-19 has had in our country. With restrictions being mandated in communities limiting our HEALTH AND ability to purchase our NUTRITION 101 supplies in person, this

Let’s face it, if I am going to be locked up in my house, I might as well get what I need to be comfortable, right?! But one cannot deny the amount of waste on trash day, when you’re forced to break down the boxes from the prior week’s shopping spree and attempt to fit them into your waste containers.

Not to mention the food waste. We are either over-consuming calories from our take-

out meal choices, or shoving leftovers into our refrigerators never to be touched again, until it’s too full—and into the trash it goes.

On the health side of it, when we consider the concept of six degrees of separation, we all know someone who has lost their life from this virus. Regardless of the individual’s age, comorbidities just compound the likelihood of complications that can lead to hospitalization and death.

Along with preventing the contraction of this virus by employing physical distancing, mask wearing and hand hygiene when in public, once again I implore you to consider ways to lessen your risk of these comorbid conditions while protecting our environment at the same time, with simple lifestyle changes.

In most cases, whether you eat al fresco at the restaurant or bring home takeout, waste is being generated. Even “green” takeout containers take some time to decompose in the landfill. When preparing easy, delicious meals at home, use your tableware in all cases.

• Avoid buying individual serving-sized packages While some think that this will help with portion control, many will tear through several packs in one sitting. Try to portion your food item in a plate or bowl, and put all away before consuming to make getting “seconds” more of an effort. And, better yet, for items that require willpower to have in your house, buy only for special occasions.

O

n the mound at Angel Stadium in Anaheim with the game on the line and the ball in his hands.

That’s where a young Blake Taylor imagined himself as a boy growing up in South Orange County.

And that’s where the 24-year-old Dana Hills alumnus found himself on Aug. 2, albeit wearing different colors than he had imagined. After seven years of toiling in the minor leagues with three different organizations, eight different teams and a Tommy John elbow surgery—and nine days after his major-league debut—the Houston Astros’ left-handed reliever was called in to pitch in the stadium where Taylor said he fell in love with the game of baseball.

“I can’t really put into words the feelings I felt,” Taylor said. “It was one of those moments, almost an out-of-body experience. I know that it was a huge situation to come into, but I just had to go in and give it your all.”

The Astros turned to Taylor with the game on the line.

With Houston already giving up the game-tying run earlier in the 10th inning, Taylor took the mound with two outs, the potential game-winning run on third base for the Angels and another runner on second. Not a problem, as Taylor caught Matt Thaiss looking on a full count with a 92-mph fastball low in the zone to end the inning on a called third strike.

11th inning, and Taylor kept the ball with a chance to earn the win in the bottom of the inning. With MLB’s new extra-innings tiebreaking runner starting on second base, Taylor opened with a groundout and strikeout. Then he followed with an intentional walk and a four-pitch walk to load the bases.

After a coaching visit on the mound, Taylor locked it down with a flyout to earn his first major-league victory in the Astros’ 6-5 triumph.

“Holy cow, I can’t believe I just did that,” Taylor said of his reaction after the final out. “The look on young Blake’s face, I don’t know if he would’ve been mad at me or amazed at winning in Angel Stadium.”

It was a long road for Taylor to reach that Angel Stadium mound.

Taylor was born in Orange, and only a week later, his family moved to South Orange County. As soon as he was able, Taylor joined the North Mission Viejo Little League and played in that organization until high school. Taylor began at El Toro High School as a freshman and sophomore, but transferred to Dana Hills and graduated in 2013 as a Dolphin.

Taylor was drafted No. 51 overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the second round of the MLB Draft and began what would become a seven-year, eight-team, threeorganization path to the major leagues.

“When I got drafted, I thought it was going to be fun, and traveling on planes, staying in hotels, and making money,” Taylor said, “but the minor leagues are hard.

They hit you hard. The one thing I take from the minor leagues is the relationships you make with guys on those teams.

It’s a journey that I wouldn’t change.”

Taylor played one season for the Pirates’ rookie ball team in Florida before being traded to the New York Mets organization, where he spent the 2014 season

and start of the 2015 season on two different rookie ball teams in Florida and Tennessee. In that 2015 season, Taylor earned his first promotion to the short-season, A-ball Brooklyn Cyclones.

However, the promotion was short-lived.

With Brooklyn, Taylor discovered he would need Tommy John surgery to repair his throwing elbow, which set him back for a full year. Taylor missed the end of the 2015 season and start of the 2016 season for rehab, and 372 days after his surgery, he returned to the mound, back in rookie ball in Tennessee.

In 2017, Taylor began his full-time push through the Mets organization. Taylor played the 2017 season with the Class-A Columbia Fireflies in South Carolina. In 2018, Taylor played the majority of the season with the Advanced-A St. Lucie Mets in Florida, but there was hope after making two appearances with a 2-0 record for the AAA Las Vegas 51s. In 2019, Taylor split the season with St. Lucie and the Double-A Binghamton Rumble Ponies in New York, but he only got one shot in AAA with the Syracuse Mets.

With his career continuing in the minor leagues, an arm surgery already on his ledger and only three games in AAA at that point, Taylor could have called it quits on any one of those 16-hour bus rides across the minors. However, Taylor never lost sight of his goal.

“Sometimes those thoughts crossed my mind, but I always tried to block them out,” Taylor said. “You can be happy with yourself because you gave your all; that’s all you can do. I didn’t want to stay up at night thinking, I didn’t work hard enough.”

Then in the winter of 2019, Taylor’s career took another turn and earned him another shot. Taylor was traded from the Mets to the Houston Astros, and he

couldn’t wait for the new opportunity.

“Just the feeling of a team wanting you that’s been to the World Series and been an absolute monster, it was a great feeling,” Taylor said. “The Astros didn’t really have a left-hander, and to be wanted in a role they needed, it was one of the best feelings I ever had.”

But as if it needed another, Taylor’s career got one more unexpected turn.

Just as Taylor was thriving in his first big-league spring training with no runs allowed in seven appearances, COVID-19 struck to shut down spring training and delay the regular season until July.

When MLB resumed with summer camps at each team’s home ballpark, Taylor was part of the preliminary group of 60 Astros players and prospects given a shot at making the big roster. Then, after all his years of work put in, Taylor got the call.

He made the Astros’ major league roster.

Taylor told MLB media he cried when he learned the news.

While 2020 has been hard on many people, it’s been a year of success for Taylor, who made his major-league debut in the Astros’ season-opener on July 24.

“It’s been the best several months of my life,” Taylor said. “It’s different, but it’s still the big leagues. It’s the same game you grew up playing—there’s just no fans, and you have to wear a mask when you’re not playing.”

As of Thursday, Aug. 13, Taylor had an impressive 1.80 ERA, with a 1-0 record and 10 strikeouts in 10 innings pitched. He’s been reliable for the Astros out of the bullpen, as he does all he can with the opportunity finally given to him in the strange days of 2020 Major League Baseball.

“I’m soaking up this time. It’s a unique time,” Taylor said. “I’ll get to tell my kids that it wasn’t always like that (with stadiums full of people). It’ll be a cool story to tell.” DP danapointtimes.com

Pro Surfing Returns to California

San Clemente’s Filipe Toledo and Coco Ho win the WSL’s Rumble at the Ranch

I

t had been more than six months since any form of live professional surfing had taken place, but it made its return last weekend with the Rumble at the Ranch.

Featuring a unique mixed doubles team format showcasing some of the WSL Championship Tour’s top surfers—and good number of them from our sweet little South Orange County bubble—it was San Clemente’s Filipe Toledo and teammate Coco Ho taking the win at the Surf Ranch in Lemoore.

Over the years, Toledo, who relocated his family from Brazil to San Clemente to be closer to Trestles and the surf industry, has asserted himself as the premier smallwave surfer in the world.

Nobody goes faster and higher than he does, and if you’ve seen him out at T-Street training over the past few months, you know what I’m talking about. He’s also one of the best surfers at the mechanical wonder that is the Surf Ranch.

The lineup for the event was stacked.

Kelly Slater, the 11-time World Champ who helped mastermind the Central California wave pool, continued to show the world that he’s as relevant as ever—even if he was on an NSSA National team with Jim Pinkerton, father of rising San Clemente star Kirra Pinkerton, way back in 1986.

Kirra Pinkerton and Encinitas’s Alyssa Spencer also got invites to the event and were the youngest to dip a toe in the pool.

There was clearly some rust among the surfers, and many of them stumbled on their opening rides. It wasn’t until the final that Toledo was able to actually complete a ride on the right, and when he did, it certainly didn’t disappoint.

Lofting two alley-oops on his final right of the day, he threw down a 9.67 for the best score of the entire event.

“My last chance, my last wave, and I

did it,” said Toledo. “And I have to thank Coco; she was amazing!”

Ho, whose performance all day was rock-solid, chipped in a 6.57 to give her team a 16.24 total to take the win.

Last month, the Ho family suffered the loss of 1993 World Champion Derek Ho. At 55 years old, he was coming off another epic winter on the North Shore when he suffered a heart attack. He was the first Hawaiian World Champion and nephew to musical entertainer Don Ho. Before competition got underway at the Surf Ranch, a tribute was held in Derek’s honor.

“It was surreal to watch that beautiful empty left and imagine and celebrate Uncle Derek; it was awesome,” said Ho after winning the event. “I’m very thankful to everyone for making it happen.”

Because it was a charity event, $10,000 was donated to the Surfrider Foundation in the names of Toledo and Ho.

This summer, the family’s been out plying the high seas for fish as we wait idly through these swell-less doldrums. And true to his waterman roots, young Zion has been crushing it with the spear.

While sister Eden keeps the vibes right at the helm of the family boat, Zion and his father, Jon, have been going deep in search of dinner—and they’ve been scoring some great fish.

The Rumble at the Ranch was the first installment of what’s been dubbed the WSL Countdown Series. For fans of pro surfing who just can’t wait for its return, there will be a handful of other specialty events around the world during the rest of the year.

Because international travel is restricted at the moment, only athletes from each specific region are being invited to participate. There are a pair of events scheduled for Australia this fall, as well as a couple of contests on tap for France and Portugal.

After a series of sweeping changes to the Championship Tour and Qualifying Series, because of prior permitting commitments, the WSL is looking to kick off its 2021 season in Hawaii in November and December.

We’re still a long way from anything that looks like “normal” pro surfing, but the Rumble at the Ranch was a positive step in the right direction.

It’s not as if they could have held it at Lowers, even if it had been allowed, as the ocean’s been flat here for weeks. The Surf Ranch offered a world-class wave (on demand, no less) in a controlled environment that was safe for both the surfers and the fans.

Eventually, we’ll get back to the business of crowning world champs and cheering for our favorite surfers, but I don’t have to tell you that 2020’s been kind of weird.

Zion first popped up on the radar at the Gudauskas brothers’ annual Stoke-O-Rama contests over the past couple of years.

For some reason, the swell always seems to pump for the event, and he just can’t get

enough of the juice.

It’s epic to see a grom so absolutely in love with the ocean, comfortable in big waves or deep dives. It’s a passion that fuels great dreams and even greater adventures. Go get ’em, Zion! DP
