Five things Dana Point should know this week First Teen in Orange County to Die of COVID-19, Second in State THE LATEST: A teenage girl in Orange County has died of causes linked to COVID-19.

OC Health Care Agency (HCA) officials reported on Wednesday, Aug. 19, Orange County’s first pediatric death related to the coronavirus and confirmed that she did have underlying medical conditions.

“We are deeply saddened by this loss of life and send our condolences to her friends and family during this very difficult time,” said Dr. Clayton Chau, the acting health officer for the county.

According to recent data as of Wednesday, Aug. 19, there have been 833 COVID19-related deaths in Orange County. This is the second COVID-19-related death of someone younger than 17 in the state of California. On July 31, state officials reported the first death of a minor from the virus was between 13 and 17 and had “underlying health conditions according to the California Department of Public Health.”

The young person died at Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera, several media outlets reported.

As of Tuesday, Aug. 18, there had been about 638,000 COVID-19 cases in California, with about 11,523 deaths. According to the California Department of Health, about 63,000 confirmed cases were younger than age 17.

In Orange County as of Wednesday, Aug. 19, there had been 2,972 confirmed cases 17 years of age and under of the county’s 44,507 total confirmed cases. In Dana Point, there had been a total of 20 confirmed cases in children 18 years old or younger. (San Clemente had 30 such cases, San Juan Capistrano had 31, and Rancho Mission Viejo had 8.)

Orange County remains on the state’s monitoring watch list, but the county remained on a positive trend as of Wednesday.

Orange County was beyond the CDPH threshold in only one of the five reported statistical categories in the latest numbers, with a case rate per 100,000 of 98.6 still sitting well above the threshold of 25.0. The case rate represents a 14-day period with a three-day lag.

The county’s seven-day testing positivity percent landed at 5.9%, below the 8% threshold. The testing positivity is reported with a seven-day lag.

Ocean Institute Replaces Tall Ships Festival with Inaugural Virtual Maritime Festival THE LATEST: The Ocean Institute has announced it will replace its annual Tall Ships Festival with its first Virtual Maritime Festival, a multi-layered interactive and educational event featuring a three-day global streaming marathon, from September 11-13.

During this three-day streaming marathon, Ocean Institute will bring together maritime establishments from around the

globe, with interactive virtual experiences ranging from maritime reenactments and cannon battles to mermaid encounters, sea shanties, music and a sail cargo transporting coffee through the Costa Rican jungle.

The festival will feature both live and pre-recorded content, including the debut of ‘Buccaneers Video Game Challenge’ utilizing an icon representing the Pilgrim— Ocean Institute’s former full-sized replica of the 1830s merchant ship detailed in the classic novel, Two Years Before the Mast, that sank earlier this year.

Participating oceanic institutions include Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney; the United Kingdom’s Island Trust; San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park; Lady Washington vessel in Washington; Polynesian Voyaging Society, Hawaii; Mystic Seaport Museum, Connecticut; and much more.

According to Ocean Institute’s president and CEO Wendy Marshall, the new virtual event will most likely continue as an annual festival moving forward.

Levin Discusses Climate Action Plan, Maryott Announces Environmental Platform THE LATEST: While discussing a new congressional report recently released by the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis, Rep. Mike Levin (D-CA) said the financial impact of not acting on climate change is estimated at $25 trillion to $35 trillion.

“The cost of doing nothing is massive,” Levin said during a Zoom meeting on Monday, Aug. 17, when he, other members of the committee and regional community leaders in the 49th Congressional District held talks over the congressional action plan to address climate change.

During the Zoom discussion, Levin called the committee’s report a comprehensive look at climate change. The report’s recommendations include the use of wind and solar energy, as well as other “zero-carbon energy sources, and construction of new transmission infrastructure to deliver clean energy to homes.”

The report also supports investment in clean infrastructure to protect people’s health and to ensure building codes are adequate to address potential impacts from climate change.

A day after the Zoom discussion, San Juan Capistrano Councilmember Brian Maryott—a Republican who is challenging Levin in the November election for the district seat—released his campaign’s environmental platform and announced his support of the American Climate Contract.

In a press release, Maryott announced that he is joining a dozen U.S. Representatives in supporting the American Conservation Coalition’s climate pledge, whose measures include developing affordable and exportable clean energy technologies.

During Monday’s Zoom discussion, House Select Committee Chair Kathy Castor (D-FL) said while she was grateful for the entrepreneurs and others who have taken measures regarding climate change, Congress and the federal government must act, too.

“Our task is urgent,” Castor said.

The report’s recommendations include the establishment of new water infrastructure standards by Congress that account for droughts, floods and erosion, as well as supporting tax credits for clean energy use. Goals laid out are to achieve 100% sales of zero emission cars by 2035 and net-zero emissions from power generation by 2040.

“Every recommendation we make focuses on environmental justice,” Castor said.

Evan Marks, executive director and founder of The Ecology Center, a community farm in San Juan Capistrano, was also on the Zoom conference call. Marks emphasized agriculture as a way people can connect to the environment, saying he would like to see more people get into farming.

Vista City Councilmember Corinna Contreras said bipartisanship is important when talking about environmental justice.

Contreras brought up the importance of access to green spaces for residents and expressed gratitude for the federal representation by Levin. Contreras supports having a climate resiliency plan and said she sees young people that are disconnected and don’t have support systems that connect them to green jobs.

Contreras said her constituents, who tend to work in agriculture, have asked about equity, a matter she wants to preserve.

“Agriculture should provide good jobs,” Contreras said. “My constituents should not be exploited and exposed to harmful chemicals.”

As for Maryott, he said he takes seriously his responsibility to be a good steward of our world and to balance the economic priorities of the nation with the duty to safeguard the environment for future generations.

Maryott’s environmental platform includes support for providing research and development credits to explore new technologies that lower greenhouse gas emissions, opposition to nationalizing the energy sector, a focus on removing radioactive waste from the San Onofre nuclear plant and standing against additional offshore drilling in Southern California.

“I pledge to be an advocate for an environmental agenda that rises above petty partisan politics and big government mandates,” Maryott said.—Collin Breaux

Students, Community Members Continue to Call for Anti-Racist Changes in CUSD THE LATEST: Students, parents and community members continued to call for anti-racist action within Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD) during a CUSD Board of Trustees meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 19.

Members of the student-led group CUSD Against Racism had recently held a protest and called in to comment during previous Dana Point Times August 21-27, 2020

meetings to advocate for anti-bias training within CUSD, a more diverse curriculum incorporating Black and Indigenous people of color (BIPOC) and a zero-tolerance policy for students or teachers making racist remarks or displaying discriminatory behavior.

Olivia Fu, a member of CUSD Against Racism and alumna of the San Juan Hills High School Class of 2018, said they have been inspired by the open-mindedness from CUSD officials, administration and teachers when personally meeting with them to discuss concerns. Fu said there is a lot of work to be done, that CUSD should go “above and beyond” the commitments already made, and the work done should ensure lasting change.

Four issue areas have been identified by CUSD Against Racism for targets of reform: curriculum, restorative justice, educational equity and student voices and well-being.

“The top four patterns of racism students face were verbal racism from student to student, no consequences for racism, inadequate curriculum and unequal treatment based of race from an authority figure,” Fu said when citing research by another CUSD Against Racism member.

Other members of CUSD Against Racism who also called in said Native American culture should be recognized and not always placed in the context of being victims of colonial oppression; Latinx and White students should be encouraged to have conversations with each other; and the novels that students read should not only be ones written by White males.

Trustees subsequently made suggestions and discussed recommendations.

“Unfortunately, as it turns out, our disparities in the students who are suspended or expelled does fall even more heavily on our Hispanic population in our schools,” Trustee Patricia Holloway said when discussing research on the issue conducted by CUSD Against Racism and district staff. “That’s something I really do think we need to take a close look at and methodically understand that situation, so that we can maybe make some changes in how we identify students for suspension and expulsion.”

Board President Jim Reardon said a broader representation of people and cultures in instructional material starts with teachers. Reardon said a resource center used by teachers could be stocked with potential texts that teachers could use.

“The supplemental texts are reviewed all the time, and I think that’s the place where we can get the quickest and most obvious result,” Reardon said. “Frankly, we have to find a way to communicate with the people making those recommendations (about) what kinds of things we’d like to see happen in the classroom.”

Reardon also suggested forming student-led disciplinary boards that could be used in high schools.

“This would not be a substitute for normal district discipline, but a place where students would go and talk to their peers to try to resolve social and racial problems that arise at the school,” Reardon said.

Trustee Amy Hanacek said she would

dedicate the next four years of her term toward concerns raised by students and that CUSD should be no place for hate.

Hanacek also said Black lives matter.

WHAT’S NEXT: Trustee Gila Jones requested a renaming of Serra High School, which is in San Juan Capistrano, be placed on the agenda for a September meeting. Serra High School is named for Saint Junipero Serra, whose legacy has come under scrutiny for his treatment of Indigenous people in California during his missionary work.

“I’m not advocating Junipero Serra’s name be erased from history,” Jones said.

“There will always be Catholic institutions to carry his name, and it’s none of this board’s business to try to influence that.

What’s more, I don’t believe it’s appropriate for me or this board to change the name of the school without input from descendants of the Mission Indians.”

Jones plans to bring letters from members of the Acjachemen Nation and CUSD’s Native American Education Committee in support of renaming the school.—CB

Outdoor Live Music Performances Continue at Dana Point Harbor THE LATEST: Dana Point Harbor continues to present live music performances throughout the month of September as part of “You, Me + Vitamin Sea.” Visitors can enjoy free live music at select locations throughout the Harbor while indulging in al fresco dining along the water’s edge. Musical performances will include a variety of genres including folk, jazz, country, contemporary island music, and reggae.

Dana Point Harbor restaurants are offering outdoor and waterside dining in extended patio areas, in addition to curbside pickup and delivery options, while inside dining remains temporarily closed.

During a Dana Point Harbor Advisory Board meeting in July, Bryon Ward, of Burnham Ward Properties, dispelled rumors on how the pandemic may be impacting Dana Point Harbor Partners.

“We have all been very busy dealing with an unprecedented situation,” said Ward. “It’s not so often we have a complete cessation of business caused by a government intervention. It’s something new and different to all of us, in the business community and the development community. The good news is, we were very strong going into it. I’m hopeful we will be strong coming out of it.”

Ward is overseeing the development of the retail experience and landside activities in the harbor with Scott Burnham of Burnham Ward Properties.

“The good news for Dana Point Harbor is that what everyone wants in a COVID and post-COVID world is sort of what we have,” Ward said. “We’ve got lots of outdoor spaces, we’ve got lots of patio (area), either existing or that we’ve created.”

Three Candidate Forums Scheduled for Local Elections The Dana Point Civic Association (DPCA) will conduct three candidate forums during this election cycle. All will be on Fridays at 8:30 a.m. and will be available as public Zoom webinars.

The forums, which are expected to be about one hour long, will include races for Dana Point City Council, the South Coast Water District Board of Directors and the Municipal Water District of Orange County Board of Directors.

The first forum will be held on Friday, September 11 for the Dana Point City Council race. The seats for Districts 4 and 5 are up for election. Candidates Mike Frost and Gary Newkirk will run against each other in District 4, and Michael Villar and Benjamin Bebee will run against each other in District 5.

Virtual Class at Palisades Elementary Disrupted by Porn Teachers of a virtual classroom at Palisades Elementary School were forced to briefly shut down their online instruction on the first day of school this week when an individual disrupted the class by displaying pornography to the group of students.

The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 18, as the group of about 15 to 20 fifth- and sixth-graders had been engaging in their coursework, Capistrano Unified School District spokesperson Ryan Burris told Dana Point Times on Thursday, Aug. 20.

“It was one group of students in two classrooms. The teacher shut down the first classroom, then clicked the link to get to a new classroom, and it happened in there, too,” Burris said.

In a letter sent to parents explaining Page 5

the incident at the Capistrano Beach school, Principal Lisa Baggio expressed her “deepest apologies” and that the school is “working with the district to investigate this incident and determine additional next steps to prevent this from happening again.”

Baggio had also said the incident was believed, at the time, to be the work of a hacker. However, on Thursday, Burris said CUSD doesn’t consider that to be the case.

“We don’t think it was hacked,” he said.

“We do think that it was someone who had access to those links, which is why we contacted law enforcement.”

As of press time, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department wasn’t immediately available to provide details on the case.

According to Burris, CUSD schools have used Google Meet for distance learning throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

He said that moving forward, teachers and staff should install a secure plug-in that gives only those with a CUSD domain access into the Meet.

“We are asking all teachers and principals to use that plug-in to make it more secure again,” Burris said, after stating that Google Meet used to automatically require a school domain to access the link but has since made it an option for hosts to turn on or off.

Addressing the reaction of parents following the incident, Burris said they’ve been understandably concerned and that the district has been working on messaging to parents regarding Internet safety.

“What we’re working on at this point is a messaging to parents on information to make sure students are safe on the Internet and just raising awareness of the dangers of being online and having parents be aware of them,” Burris said. “Our goal is to take away the risk, and that the places where we’re teaching children are completely secure. That’s why we’ve put in the measure we put in place yesterday.”

In response to George Ray’s letter in last week’s Dana Point Times, let me respond to a few points.

Did your neighbors get any say on your three Airbnbs? I suspect most of them, like me, moved into their neighborhoods thinking they were putting their most valuable asset in a residential neighborhood— not a business district.

I suspect they’re none too happy with what your three mini-hotels have done to their property values. Then you state that “a majority of Dana Point residents are really not that troubled by STRs.” Of course not. There are only about 160 of them right now. But what happens when our council majority gets their way and opens

These changes are necessary in order to safely conduct the election in accordance with public health guidelines and maintain a secure and transparent election. California law requires that in-person voting be provided for the Presidential General Election.

As the pandemic began to take hold in Orange County, the Registrar’s office moved quickly to implement procedures that would provide safe voting options for all voters and a safe work environment for staff. Whether a voter prefers to vote at home or in-person at a Vote Center, every effort is being made to ensure they have a positive experience that promotes health and safety.

Some of the changes include: • Detailed plans for disinfecting, maintaining physical distance, personal protective equipment and increased signage at all in-person voting locations • Increased online training for vote center customer service representatives • Leveraging technology to create remote public election observation opportunities In addition, the Registrar’s office recently opened a 1,125-square-foot Vote Center Lab. As a fully functional, permanent replica of an in-person voting location, the Vote Center Lab was built to serve multiple purposes, such as testing processes and procedures, training election staff, educating the general public and supporting research efforts in a controlled environment. Its timely completion allowed the Registrar of Voters to test new

processes and other changes to existing operations necessary for the November 3 Presidential General Election.

Since opening, the lab has served as a testing site to determine the impact of physical distancing and proper cleaning and disinfecting procedures on wait times for voters. It will also be used for training Vote Center Customer Service Representatives to ensure they receive hands-on practice and experience in a Vote Center environment prior to stepping into an actual Vote Center.

this up citywide? How long before they proliferate as they have in every beach city dumb enough to allow unrestricted STRs? The one thing you got right was saying the voting public doesn’t get a choice on STRs. Thanks to Joe Muller, Richard Viczorek and Jamey Federico, that’s exactly right. Three councilmembers who have very few STRs in their own districts have the gall to impose them on the rest of us.

They’ll decide to impose them on Lantern District and Capistrano Beach, which already have 73% of them. And thanks to districting, they know we can’t recall them since we couldn’t vote for them, either.

Wrong again on the CCC, though. You suggest they will push for unrestricted STRs, but a recent OC Register article quotes CCC staff as saying, “The commission has recognized legitimate community concerns over potential adverse impacts associated with vacation rentals, with respect to housing stock and affordability, community character, noise and traffic impacts.” That’s why CCC staff recommended the homestay ordinance modeled on Santa Monica’s, suggesting that it

would indeed meet with CCC approval.

Seventy-two percent of STR owners in Dana Point are full-time investors, not primary residents renting their home for a month while on vacation (which is perfectly legal, by the way). According to the survey, 60% of residents surveyed disapprove (45% strongly disapprove) of that.

Neighbors shouldn’t have to suffer because STR owners are running businesses next door.

Local Businesses to Celebrate National Dog Day with Shelter Fundraiser

or the first time ever, Pet Project Foundation is launching “Doggy Day Out” as a way to garner support for the local animal shelter’s efforts to find homes for its animals.

In celebration of National Dog Day, Pet Project Foundation is partnering with local restaurants and retailers to raise money for the San Clemente/Dana Point Animal Shelter through the Doggy Day Out campaign.

On Sunday, Aug. 23, participating businesses will donate 10% of a customer’s purchase to the cause.

“Doggy Day Out has never been done before. Typically, this weekend we would host Barks and Brews with the Outlets at San Clemente, which helps us to raise thousands of dollars for our shelter animals,” said Vickie McMurchie, chairperson for Pet Project Foundation. “Obviously, because of COVID-19 and restrictions on events, that’s not possible this year.”

Pet Project Foundation is a nonprofit that commits itself to raising more than $300,000 annually for San Clemente/Dana Point Animal Shelter to provide medical care, food and training for lost and abandoned animals in San Clemente and Dana Point.

McMurchie, who is also the executive director for the Dana Point Chamber of Commerce, says that the foundation created Doggy Day Out as a way for supporters to still celebrate National Dog Day and give back to Pet Project Foundation, in a non-event format, while supporting local businesses.

“Supporting small business was a major factor in planning this fundraiser,” McMur-

chie said. “While planning this, we didn’t feel right about just asking businesses for a handout, as we know they’ve been suffering through the pandemic as well. Doggy Day Out seemed like a win-win to both help us raise funds, but also to drive business to these local merchants who have so generously supported us along the way.”

Pet Project Foundation is tasked with fundraising for the shelter year-round—an unusual perk for the shelter, enabling it to successfully house animals while being pro-humane. The foundation’s annual gala, which is typically held in the fall, will not be held this year due to pandemic concerns.

A fundraising committee was formed to brainstorm creative ways to fundraise safely, and McMurchie says there will be more fun events to come.

San Clemente/Dana Point Animal Shelter’s Animal Rescue Mission (ARM) helps relieve county shelters of their higher population of animals by transferring some of them to the Coastal Animal Services Authority (CASA)

based in San Clemente. CASA oversees San Clemente/Dana Point Animal Shelter.

“We continue to be very successful in adopting out our shelter animals,” said Kim Cholodenko, general manager for CASA. “We have rescued a larger number from overcrowded county agencies and have found wonderful homes for them. We are very thankful for all our staff, volunteers for providing exceptional care for our shelter animals, and for our adopters in providing forever homes.”

The San Clemente/Dana Point Animal Shelter is currently closed to the general public, as a response to COVID-19 concerns. But operations have adapted to adhere to state and county directives, while ensuring animals have a chance to go to a good home.

“We’re all in this together—and if that ultimately helps us save animals, well, that’s just amazing,” McMurchie said. “We are so grateful to the businesses who have partnered with us, and I hope that their stores and patios will be full (socially distanced, of

August 2020: What Can We Control?

I

admit it, I am super tired of living in a pandemic.

Thankfully, I am fairly well equipped physically, socially and emotionally to deal with this situation. There are still many days when the seemingly never-ending uncertainty and inability to control what is going on in the world leaves me a little bit angry, anxious, sad and generally out of sorts.

In my immediate sphere, I only have to put up a good front for my dog and my husband. To keep emotionally strong, I do my best to connect with my social circle and family via phone and from 6 feet apart—this connection is an important part of feeling well.

What I am observing is that my friends and colleagues with school-aged children in the home are dealing with more chaos, as they must shoulder the emotions of their children, not to mention supervise distance learning.

Recently, one of my close friends told me about her daughter’s struggle with our current reality. She heard some commotion upstairs and found her usually cheerful 13-year-old sitting in a torn-apart bedroom, all her careful decor pulled off the walls and ripped to shreds.

This was uncharacteristic for her daughter, but it was a valid reaction to the turmoil of teen lives during this crisis and their lack of control over their lives.

The Greater Good Science Center asked for feedback from 400 teenaged youth over three weeks in April as lockdowns and distance learning had just begun.

One group of students was asked to only focus on what they could control in their immediate environment—sanitizing keys and phones, washing hands, finishing the day’s school assignments.

The second group was given no particular instructions. The group who focused on what they could control had fewer symptoms of depression and anxiety than the group who were given specific controllable daily tasks.

Human beings naturally search for facts and answers to guide our brains toward a sense of stability and control. For more than five months now, we have lost our sense of certainty about our futures. As this pandemic continues to linger and perhaps stretch into early next year, we are all a bit adrift.

The brief study above points to the benefits of focusing on what we can control.

Other positive strategies include talking honestly and openly to loved ones and supportive friends, trying each day to list three positives in your life, WELLNESS AND practicing self-compassion PREVENTION (essentially acknowledgBy Susan ing the negative emotions Parmelee and accepting them), and removing yourself from stressful situations.

Self-care and compassion also include allowing yourself to lean on your support system, so when I reach the limit of “faking it” and verge toward “losing it,” I tell my husband, I reach out to my close friends and my adult children; I ask for a kind ear.

This does not make me weak; it makes me well. Coping is not a bad word— it is a word that designates healthy skills, such as exercising, eating mostly healthy foods, meditating, leaning on a supportive friend or loved one, and participating in meaningful activities.

The best thing that we can do for our friends and families is to model these healthy coping strategies and to realize that we can only control what is happening in our sphere of influence, which right now seems

My friend, who I mentioned above, sat with her daughter and asked her to tell her what she was feeling. She let her cry and listened without judgment or ideas on how to fix things.

She learned her daughter had missed her best friend, FaceTime was not enough, and this friend was not allowed to visit with peers (something her daughter could not control).

The two of them cleaned up the room and hugged each other, resetting for another day in an unrecognizable world.

Gridiron Mask Dana Hills football returns to the field with COVID-19 protocols

I

n his 14 years as a football coach at Dana Hills High, head coach Phil Skinner has never spent this much time away from the Dolphins’ turf.

It had been five full months since Dana Hills, the Capistrano Unified School District and most of society shut down due to the coronavirus in mid-March.

Spring football, summer camp and training camp had all been wiped away. Even the previously scheduled return to the field for socially distanced conditioning workouts on July 6 had been canceled days before it was to start.

But, finally, during what had originally been scheduled as the first game week of a season that eventually was delayed until January, Skinner and the Dana Hills football team took to the field for conditioning workouts with freshmen on Tuesday, Aug. 18 and with varsity players on Wednesday, Aug. 19.

“I’ve been there for some years, and that’s one of the most familiar places in the world for me,” Skinner said, “and even I felt a little foreign. So that felt good to get back out here. It’s been a long time coming.”

With no equipment, small groups limited to nine players and one coach, constant 6-foot spacing and face masks—not the kind on helmets worn in competition—it’s not close to a total football practice yet, but it was a welcome substitute for weeks of Zoom meetings and isolation.

“As unnormal as the practice was, it was fantastic to be able to see their faces,” Skinner said. “They put their cleats on, and they worked really hard. We did a lot of conditioning, a lot of drills. After five months on the couch, it was a little bit of a shock to their system. Not like a hell week, but the first day of conditioning is always a tough one. They were feeling it.”

The Dolphins were limited to plyometric exercises with drills for changing of direction, starting and stopping and keeping their heads fixed to one spot while running. Linemen were able to do some work out of a stance or do some squats, but no pushing or contact of any kind was allowed.

and days left on the schedule until full practices are slated to begin on Dec. 14 and the season on Jan. 8 to where the team would normally be at the start of spring practice. At this point, any time on the field is good time on the field.

“They’re having a coach (to) coach them up,” Skinner said. “They’re being pushed, they’re being challenged. They’re being asked to do something that’s not easy to do, and that all translates. They haven’t had anyone barking at them like that in a positive way in a few months.”

Something that could’ve been a challenge was adapting to the new COVID-19 protocols that will need to be followed before and after every practice.

Groups of nine players and one coach arrive at their assigned time wearing a mask and keeping the mandated 6-foot distance. Each player and coach are asked a series of questions about COVID-19 symptoms and any potential exposures.

Following a temperature check to the forehead and hand sanitization, the group goes on the field for their workout, and 15 minutes later, the next group arrives and goes through the same process.

On the way out, the groups are escorted straight off the field and all the way off campus to be picked up or to go home.

“It was real procedural, but I was proud of the way they took it seriously,” Skinner said. “The kids had a desire to do it right and get to the next level.”

Skinner joked that his football practices went much smoother than the first days of distance learning classes and the related technology had gone, both for his own students and his kids’ first days at elementary school.

Whether it’s schoolwork or football practice, the Dana Hills football has taken its first steps in the new normal of the coronavirus era. DP

Thomas J. Carney

On Wednesday, August 5, 2020, Thomas James Carney, a loving husband, father of four children, grandfather of eight, and great-grandfather of six, passed away at the age of 87.

Known as Tom by most and affectionately as TC by a few, he was born on December 17, 1932, in Denver CO. On July 12, 1952, he married his high school sweetheart, Beverly (Beth) Paddock. She remained his touchstone, best friend, and love for over 68 years. Together they lived up and down the Southern California coast, raising two daughters, Sheri and Melody and two sons, Craig and Mike.

He owned, Tom Carney Builders, for 50 years, responsible for building beautiful homes throughout Orange and LA Counties; he and Beth also had a garment business, Anything Goes, for 22 years. Tom was the heart and strength of his family, known for his quick wit, infectious laugh, and kind and generous spirit.

He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life with immediate family will be held at Dana Point Harbor with ashes scattered in the Pacific Ocean. An Irish Wake will be held later this year, exact date dependent on Covid-19 travel recommendations.

Everybody’s Goin’ Surfin’ With few summer recreation options this year, surfboard and wetsuit sales are booming

F

rom Salt Creek to San Onofre, there seem to be more people in the water than ever before. And while, personally, my wave count is down and finding a parking spot can be a challenge, we find ourselves in a transformative moment in surfing.

There are seemingly more people enjoying the benefits of life in the ocean than ever before.

“There’s no baseball or soccer. There were no summer camps, and as school starts, kids are still stuck at home,” explained a local surfer and parent, who asked not to be named in this column.

“And I think a lot of people are embracing the fact that the beach is a relatively safe space to get everyone out of the house.”

When the pandemic started, and the federal government sent relief checks to everyone, I implored people, in one of my previous columns, to help prop up our local surf industry and support our area’s myriad of talented surfboard shapers and craftsmen and craftswomen.

Well, from what I hear on the street, surfboard sales are through the roof right now. One shaper friend of mine in LA relayed to me that for a period, Future Fins, the company that produces remov-

able surfboard fins, was sold out of the fin boxes that secure the fins to the board.

Anecdotally, what that means is there are a lot of surfboards being made right now.

A look at some recent data helps further the argument that wetsuit and surf hard goods sales (categorized as surfboards, fins, leashes and equipment that actually help you go surf) are enjoying an unprecedented uptick.

“Instead of buying sports equipment, people are buying surfboards and wetsuits,” explained the parent to whom I was talking.

According to the website actionwatch.com, which covers the business of surf and skate, the numbers support what we’re seeing at the beaches. When the pandemic first started and businesses were forced to close in March, April and May, sales plummeted, but since reopening, shops have bounced back with double-digit growth.

“When we first saw the preliminary June 2020 sales data for the ActionWatch US

retailer panel, we had a hard time believing the results,” the website stated. “The first set of data indicated that year-overyear sales grew by 20-percent or more.

By the time we received all the data, the store sales for all categories increased by +15-percent when compared to last June.

This resulted in an almost perfect V-shaped recovery after a disastrous March, an even worse April, and a promising May.” What’s interesting to note is that what’s driving this growth are not the facets of the surf industry that are most profitable, such as apparel, where the profit margins on items are considerable. ActionWatch reports that apparel, footwear and accessories sales were all down 20-30%. The meat and potatoes of the industry, these three categories make up more than 60% of overall sales volume for surf and skate.

Conversely, surfboard sales are up. Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve talked to more than a half-dozen different surfboard makers, and none of them is complaining about

“Everything associated with surfing inspires me,” Kingston said in an email from his family. “From the community we are part of, to the smiles and laughter that the ocean and surfing brings to us all, it’s all about having fun and the adventures each day brings! It’s never the same, but it’s always epic!”

the health of their business. Their chief complaint is they can’t keep up with the demand. And while that’s anecdotal, again, the data backs up what we’re seeing.

“Despite store closures and stay-athome orders, skate hard goods experienced 54 percent growth, followed by wetsuits with 30 percent, and surf hard goods with 29 percent,” reported ActionWatch.

The reason this isn’t bigger news is because the big, apparel-focused brands aren’t really cashing in on these boom times.

What’s driving the growth is people getting out and participating—and they need boards and gear to do that. It’s the surfboard builders and core surf companies that actually service surfers who are enjoying the benefit.

Unfortunately, it’s not all wine and roses. Gross margins for surf hard goods are the lowest in the industry at just 36%. And after chilly summer water temps, wetsuit margins weren’t much better, at 38%. That means even with sales being so good right now, it’s still tough to make more than a few bucks off every board or suit sold.

It’d be easy to complain about how crowded our beaches have been, especially since the weather started cooking, but there’s a lot of good in all the chaos.

Local businesses are surviving, and more people are getting out in the environment and getting stoked.

As a friend explained, “It’s like the old days when you went to a surf shop to actually buy a surfboard.”

been surfing since before he was born.

“Technically, I started surfing when I was in my mom’s tummy. She spent all day surfing until the day I was born! I literally went from her belly to the ocean,” Kingston explained in the email.

This year, he’ll be starting kindergarten, which will present new opportunities and

adventures, but according to Kingston, he’s already getting an education.

“I go to the ‘University of Salt Creek,’ ” he proudly wrote.

And when asked what his favorite thing about surfing is, he quickly answered, “Getting barreled and going on big waves and staying psyched!” DP
