THE LATEST: A group of about 200 gathered at Heritage Park in Dana Point on March 20, in the wind and rain, to pay their respects to Maddie James (5) who passed away on March 13, three months after being diagnosed with an incurable brain tumor.

WHAT’S NEXT: About a month ago, Maddie’s family began working on raising $1 million to memorialize her by helping to create “The Maddie James Seaside Learning Center” as part of the Ocean Institute’s planned $4 million expansion. As of March 23, the Maddie James Foundation has raised $271,928.97.

…Woman Pleads Guilty in Bicyclist’s Death?

THE LATEST: On March 16 Michelle Nicole Stearns (30) of San Juan Capistrano pleaded guilty to gross vehicular manslaughter for the October 15, 2007 killing of bicyclist Jose Umberto Barranco-Patino (32) in Dana Point.

Stearns is accused of losing control of her BMW, jumping the curb and hitting Barranco-Patino who was riding his bike on the Del Obispo Street sidewalk while on his way home from work at Denny’s.

THE LATEST: The 44-foot power boat Kabuki was removed from Doheny Beach March 19, three weeks after 25-knot plus winds broke the boat free from its anchor and pushed it on to the sand on February 26.

Park Superintendent Rich Haydon said owner Dave Winterburn could not immediately be reached as he was in Las Vegas.

When finally contacted, delays in planning, insuring with $5 million bond and tsunami warnings held them up.

“Rumors that the boat was abandoned, were not true,” said Haydon. “We knew who the owner was and we’re working with him.”

Because the boat beached off season in an area not susceptible to swells, Haydon said the parks department was willing to wait the extra time for the owner to remove it in order to avoid having to use taxpayer money.

“It was an accident,” said Haydon. “Had it happened in a different area or at a different time of the year, the situation would have been different and we would have ordered Winterburn to remove it within a tighter time frame.”

Kabuki was finally dug out by backhoe and two private boats towed the vessel to deeper water and then to the shipyard.

The entire expense was paid by the owner, said Haydon.

…More Rancor at CUSD?

THE LATEST: The schism in the Capistrano Unified School District Board of Education has grown wider than ever, as two board members announced this month they have hired their own attorney over alleged open-meeting violations.

Even though an attorney hired by the district to specifically look into the issue said he saw no wrongdoing, Trustees Ellen Addonizio and Sue Palazzo left the dais before the board again voted to restore two teaching days and some of the teachers’ salaries cut in the last contract.

District officials said the moves were required because of language in the contract that required the restoration when “triggers” were met. Addonizio and Palazzo questioned whether the triggers were met and whether the district acted improperly by not approving the moves in public.

The trustees, while not admitting anything wrong in how they handled the issue, took the vote in public anyhow. It was 5-0, without Addonizo and Palazzo.

Their attorney, Craig Alexander, asked in a letter that the district pay him for his work on behalf of the two trustees. That has not been formally considered.

Trustees met in a special session to discuss board protocols and decorum,

among other things, on Wednesday.

In another special meeting on Wednesday, the board removed Palazzo and Addonizio from the board of the Regional Occupation Program, replacing them with Trustees John Alpay and Lynn Hatton. The vote was 4-2-1, with Anna Bryson abstaining.

…Barring Molesters from County Areas?

THE LATEST: Registered sex offenders will be barred from county parks and other areas under an ordinance considered by supervisors this week. The ordinance was proposed by Supervisor Shawn Nelson, who represents the Anaheim-Fullerton area.

Violators could be punished with up to six months in jail, a $500 fine or both.

Supervisor Patricia Bates, who represents Dana Point, supported the so-called “child-safety zone” measure at a board meeting this week, but has logistical concerns, such as how the ordinance would apply to incoming boaters at Dana Point Harbor, as well as a clause that would allow the county parks director to grant waivers.

That authority, she said, should be with law-enforcement officials.

Spotlight on SONGS In light of Japan’s earthquake, tsunami and nuclear power woes, San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station’s safety gets scrutinized

early two weeks ago, the earth under Honshu, Japan shook so violently that the seas rose up and swept across swaths of the country’s east coast, taking out portions of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.

For those living in the shadow of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS), Japan’s disaster crystallized fears about the safety of the power plant just three miles from San Clemente’s border and about eight miles from Dana Point.

“I’m scared. My friends are scared. My children are scared,” said Dagmar Foy to San Clemente’s City Council last week. “I don’t want to feel like I need to move in order to be safe.”

Experts in seismology and operational safety of nuclear power plants say the circumstances in Japan differ enough from those locally that area residents should be assured a similar conflagration is unlikely to strike San Onofre.

For its part, officials at SONGS have stressed that the plant suffered no ill effects from Japan’s temblor and would likely have fared well during a similar quake here. Even so, their structures are built to withstand a 7.0-magnitude earthquake and a peak ground of .67 gs, both measurements based on the maximum credible threat, said Chief Nuclear Officer Peter Dietrich last week during a conference call with reporters after the quake. The plant is also guarded by a 30-foot reinforced tsunami wall.

Additionally, SONGS works closely with local, state and federal agencies to ensure a safety plan is in place and tested regularly.

“We feel we have a very robust plan,” Dietrich said.

The plan has many tiers, from local responders to federal government agencies.

More to Do Nevertheless, experts said decision makers at the power plant owned by Southern California Edison (SCE) and above at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) need to take further steps to ensure the facility can withstand unimagined crisis.

tor of Southern California’s Earthquake Center at the University of Southern California (USC). “That requires very careful and very expensive studies be done, and we just have to make sure we do them.

We don’t want to be caught like Japan did, underestimating the hazards faced.”

Najmedin Meshkati, a civil engineer at USC and an expert in occupational safety, said the design of nuclear power plants has been based on assumptions about the largest historical earthquakes. These assumptions must be reviewed, especially for San Onofre and Diablo Canyon, the two nuclear plants in earthquake-prone California.

“I would like to see them go above and beyond this,” Meshkati said, “because they are in very highly populated areas.”

Meshkati, who has inspected nuclear power plants across the world, including Chernobyl in 1997, said plant operators and their regulators must not be complacent. He said policy statements like one in January from the NRC about workplace changes need to be a starting point for safety and not the end.

Lawmakers and President Obama himself have called upon the NRC to further investigate the safety of the industry.

“I guess it’s important to say we believe the plant is operating safely and that San Onofre, as well as other plants, are built to withstand other environmental hazards, including tsunamis and earthquakes,” said Victor Dricks, spokesman for the NRC. He said the agency requires structures, systems and components to be designed with regard to natural phenomenon that are historical to the area and then add safety measures beyond that to “account

for any limits on historical data.”

Dietrich said the nuclear industry has tried to apply the lessons of the 1979 Three-Mile Island disaster and more recently, review its practices and infrastructure in light of 9-11.

“We’ll take this full opportunity to learn as much as we can from this situation,” Dietrich said of Japan’s nuclear crisis.

“My focus and goal is to stay grounded in facts and science.”

Concerns Linger San Clemente resident Steve Netherby, a longtime member of the Coalition for Responsible and Ethical Environmental Decisions (CREED), said Japan’s plight didn’t change his group’s view that nuclear power should be phased out. The March 11 earthquake did create a wakeup call for others outside his movement.

“It is the most dangerous energy source on the planet, the most toxic,” he said. “Regardless of whether we shut it down right now, we’re stuck with the legacy of nuclear waste for the rest of our lives.”

Netherby noted that when homebuyers come to the area they rarely consider or fully comprehend the potential for trouble from the nuclear power plant. He said countries like France and Germany chose to pull the plug, if temporarily, on their nuclear energy after Japan’s crisis.

The United States should do the same, he said.

Failure to do so, Netherby believed, could cost South Orange County and its residents its very way of living.

“We love our lifestyle. We love our ocean views. We love the people here,” he said. “That’s what we want to focus on,

but we realize we have a responsibility to show nuclear power for what it is.”

Incidentally, when the SC Times rolled out its first edition in 2006 (two years before the first publication of the DP Times) we asked, “How safe is San O?” At the time, the overriding concern wasn’t natural disasters but whether the power plant was sufficiently fortified against terrorists and their ilk.

“I’m very confident that we have the capabilities to effectively defend those nuclear plants, particularly from potential criminal acts,” said Matt Bettenhausen, California’s director of the Office of Homeland Security at the time.

Regional Efforts At the county level, the Orange County Environmental Health serves as another level in the multi-tiered public safety plan.

Just as each city operates its own Emergency Operations Center (EOC), the county also has an EOC located just outside of the City of Orange on Loma Ridge.

Radiation Protection Officer Randy Styner, stationed at the county EOC, serves as a liaison between the Offsite Dose Assessment Center (ODAC) near SONGS, the county health officer and the sheriff who ultimately make the determination of when and how an evacuation will be handled.

Together the county EOC, ODAC and other jurisdictions deliver up-to-the-minute information regarding radioactive emissions at SONGS. Styner cooperates with the plant and ODAC Coordinator Robby Curtis who oversees the ODAC, which is staffed by a group of public health professionals and health physicists/radiological experts and acts as a third-party kind of “checks and balances” source for information www.danapointtimes.com

Although no member of the ODAC is an employee of SCE or SONGS, a portion of ODAC funding comes from the utility and is used to pay for training and drills, a funding model that is not unusual within the county health agency according to Orange County Environmental Health Assistant Director Denise Fennessy. Funding from the utility is used in much the same manner that funding for health department restaurant inspections are paid for by the restaurants themselves through health permit fees paid to the county, she said.

“Our primary goal, along with that of ODAC, is the protection of public health.

Most members have other jobs in the health agency in departments such as hazardous materials or restaurant inspection and serve on ODAC on a volunteer basis,” said Fennessy. “The ODAC team is dedicated to this endeavor, so much so that when the public is being evacuated and heading away from the facility, these are the people that will be heading toward it.”

Members of the ODAC team regularly receive comprehensive training in plume assessment and general radiological health issues and emergency response procedure by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

“We train, have drills and dress rehearsals on a regular basis that are continually evaluated by FEMA and the NRC. Staff is continually rotated in and out to ensure a depth of experience and training at all times,” said Fennessy.

In the event of a radiological emergency, the ODAC team performs their own plume assessments and coordinate radiation field monitoring teams (made up of fire department personnel) and dose assessment.

They then gather all the information and come up with a Protective Action Recommendation (PAR) that is relayed to the health officer at the county EOC.

The PAR is then given to the sheriff who orders the evacuation, most likely to the Orange County Fairgrounds, where an emergency reception and decontamination will be set up and staffed very quickly—within an hour—and ready to serve evacuees.

As far as the recommendation of when and if taking potassium iodide (KI) is appropriate, that call is made by the environmental health department.

The ODAC headquarters is located within a half mile of the plant just off of Basilone Road.

Be Prepared In addition to regional measures, Dana Point has plans in place and trained individuals prepared to respond to an emergency.

“Our response plan includes the fulltime operation of the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) to serve as a hub for coordinating the city’s public safety efforts,” said Mike Rose, the city’s director of disaster preparedness. “During an event we maintain constant contact and communication with the other area EOCs, the county EOC, regional operations centers and the state center in Sacramento.”

As part of this multi-level plan, Rose participates in the Interjurisdictional Planning Committee (IPC) and also has the full support of SONGS as well as other agencies like the Sheriff’s Department and the Orange County Fire Authority. IPC associate members also include FEMA, NRC, California Emergency Management Agency (CALEMA), state parks, California Highway Patrol, Caltrans, Public Health Services, Oceanside Fire Department, the American Red Cross and more.

ness, gather emergency supplies and formulate family disaster plans,” said Rose. “Though Emergency Services is here to provide guidance through public outreach to make sure our citizens are prepared for whatever emergency we may encounter, we are all responsible for being able to protect our own households.”

Getting correct information during an event is also key. When sirens sound, residents should go inside and turn on televisions and radios, he said.

Dana Point is located in a seismically active area near the San Andreas, Newport Englewood and other fault lines making it highly susceptible to both earthquakes and the possibility of resulting tsunamis.

In 2006 Dana Point became the first city in Southern California and the second city in the state—behind Crescent City—to be certified by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Though the Beach Road community and the harbor—the city’s lowest lying areas—are of major concern in the event of a tsunami, Dana Point has the topographical advantage of being well protected by 100- to 120-foot cliffs that separate much of the city from the coastline and residents should all know to respond to a tsunami warning by moving immediately to higher ground, said Rose.

“We don’t make any of our decisions lightly or in a vacuum. There is an abundance of communication between jurisdictions to ensure we are doing everything possible to protect public health and safety based on the best available information during any given emergency,” said Rose.

“The bottom line is, preparedness and the city website, www.danapoint.org, is a great source of information.”

Locals Express Increased Interest in Potassium Iodide Concerns about radiation from Japan’s disabled nuclear power plant reaching the West Coast translated into a rush on potassium iodide (KI) pills, which protect against the uptake of radioactive iodide to the thyroid.

According to San Clemente’s Emergency Planning Director Jen Tucker, over 500 requests were made there in the last week alone. Dana Point director Mike Rose said he counted around 100 calls, though that number includes those both requests for KI and general emergency preparedness questions.

During the spring of 2010, a one time mail-in program offered to residents of San Clemente, Dana Point and San Juan Capistrano—cities within a 10-mile radius of the SONGS—KI tablets at no charge.

Only 20 percent of the 17,827 Dana Point addresses that were sent request forms last year responded. In San Clemente 18 percent of 29,000 residences responded.

Since the Japan quake, Californians have rushed to get their hands on quickly diminishing supplies of potassium iodide despite assurances by the Department of Public Health and Emergency Management Agency that no immediate emergency exists.

Department of Public Health, and Mike Dayton, acting secretary of the California Emergency Management Agency, issued a combined statement March 15, which emphasized the risks of taking potassium iodide pills in the absence of radiation exposure.

“We urge Californians to not take potassium iodide as a precautionary measure,” Backer said in the statement. “We Page 5

want to emphasize that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services have all stated that there is no risk expected to California or its residents as a result of the situation in Japan.

Ingestion of the pills can present a danger to people with allergies to iodine, shellfish or thyroid problems. Taken inappropriately, it can have serious side effects including abnormal heart rhythms, nausea, vomiting, electrolyte abnormalities and bleeding.

According to the City of Dana Point’s website, potassium iodide is used to protect your thyroid gland from absorbing radioactive iodide. It does not, however, protect other parts of the body, nor does it protect against any other forms of radiation. It is only effective when taken immediately before, or in the first few hours following exposure to radiation.

When used in the absence of radiation, potassium iodide can cause over activity, under activity or enlargement of the thyroid gland. For these reasons public health officials are concerned about the public’s desire to self medicate with potassium iodide, when there is no need for it.

Where the Rubberneck Meets the Road I It was immediately obvious, however, that this was not a typical morning. The street, from Del Prado to the parking area at Heritage Park, was lined with parked cars. The sidewalks were busy with people moving toward the ocean. It was almost like Turkey Trot mornings when people park on the bluffs and walk down to the harbor or like crowds of visitors for a Sunday concert in the park.

I opened the front door and walked out on my deck to get a better look, by now noticing that this was not a festive crowd of people heading toward a good time.

These folks were serious, focused on the moment, intent upon reaching the bluffs above the harbor.

I walked back inside and called to Steve, a friend who rents a room and who was busy in the kitchen making coffee.

“What’s going on?” I asked him.

Whether or not we receive and use any power from San Onofre is incidental to the question of safety. I trust Dana Point officials and neighboring cities will now begin a major public inquiry and planning session regarding San Onofre, its decommissioning and energy alternatives.

called me from the East Coast at three this morning, wondering if I’d been washed out to sea.” He went on to give me the details he’d been able to glean from news accounts on the Internet. A giant surge of water was heading for California.

These people wanted to see it all happen: The retreat of the water and then the huge wave that would rise from the ocean’s depths and burst above the defenseless jetty, scattering boats and buildings, inundating Capistrano Beach.

In 2001 I moved to Dana Point and quickly fell into the regimen of taking a glass of wine with me and walking to the point to watch the sunset. It’s only 315 strides from my deck to the viewing area. This morning I could join the crowd in a few minutes and, with them, gaze at the southern horizon in anticipation of the Perfect Wave. Safely out of reach of the tsunami, we could have a view of the disaster as it occurred. What luck!

And that’s what I did, taking in the scene as I walked—the workout group on the grass, the guy playing Frisbee with his dog, the couple lying on a blanket, some joggers coming up the hill—and then joining the crowd watching for the approaching wave.

I found a spot behind and above the people at the fence. Behind me three young men with binoculars stood on one of the concrete benches, carrying on a running commentary about the water level inside the jetty as it rose and fell.

For the most part, we were quiet and orderly, disappointed as the minutes passed by without our personal wave’s appearance but reluctant to admit that we were disappointed. After all, we didn’t want anyone to get washed out to sea, but if it was going to happen, we wanted to have stories to tell.

I caught myself in this ambivalence, wanting to leave but not wanting to miss anything. I compensated by forcing my mind to nobler concerns. How magnificent is the sea, even in this destructive mode.

t looked like a really nice day coming up as I climbed out of bed that Saturday morning. Some days feel a lot better than others as they begin, and this one felt good: Warm Beverli Jinn sun, clear blue sky, fresh air drifting through my open window. Even the persistent, plaintive lament of a Mourning Dove seemed peaceful and serene rather than sorrowful.

How was I to know that only hours earlier a devastating earthquake and tsunami had left a part of Japan in ruins?

I came down the stairs and stopped at the window that looks out on Old Golden Lantern, wanting to hang on for as long as possible to the beauty: People walking their dogs, an occasional pair of bicyclists carrying on a conversation as they rode by, joggers soaking in the energy of the day.

Go.See.Do Capistrano Celebrates the Swallows Some say the swallows don’t come back to Capistrano anymore, but that doesn’t stop the town from gathering to throw one heck of party, complete with one of the largest nonmotorized parades in the country. And this year, the 53rd annual Swallows’ Day Parade and Mercado is taking place Saturday, March 26 along the streets of downtown San Juan Capistrano. The parade features 182 entrants, including the 1st Marine Division Band and Marines from Capistrano’s adopted battalion, the 1/11. The Mercado, with food and shopping, runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The parade starts at 11 a.m., but the main streets close an hour earlier. Some are shut down as early as 6 a.m., so the key for visitors is to use the Swallows’ Parade Shuttle Bus, which will be available at the Endevco and Fluidmaster parking lots. Both are on Rancho Viejo Road, east of the freeway and between Ortega Highway and Junipero Serra Road. This year, the service is also available at the San Juan File photo Capistrano Community Center and Sports Park (off Camino Del Avion near Del Obispo).

The shuttle runs from 8 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. and is $2 round-trip for adults; children 12 and under are free. It drops you off by the Woman’s Club on El Horno, where the annual pancake breakfast is held from 6 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. For more information about the parade, visit the San Juan Capistrano Fiesta Association’s website at www.swallowsparade.com. Where are the Single Men? D

uring the 17 years I’ve written a column about finding love after 50, I’ve received a variety of questions about middle-aged dating. The most frequently asked: “Where are the men?”

By Tom Blake will approach me at Costco, Ralphs, Albertsons, or in my Dana Point deli, and say, “I’ve given up hope of ever finding a partner. Where do single men my age congregate?”

I explain that in south Orange County, there is no place—at least that I’m aware of—where older single men go to meet single women close to their age.

And then I ask what they do to meet men. Too often, the women shrug their shoulders and say, “Nothing. If it’s meant to be, it will happen.”

That won’t get the job done. Oh sure, fate steps in occasionally bringing two lonely singles of the opposite sex together, but if singles sit back and wait for a moment like that, it may be a long, lonely wait.

Some women, particularly those newly single, don’t know how to begin, where

to go, or what to do, when it comes to dating. Perhaps they were married for 40-some years and never thought about having to date again.

I tell them the most important thing they can do is to get out of the house and meet new people. Available single men could be anywhere and everywhere.

In Dana Point, we have the harbor shops and restaurants, and the Ocean Institute, where more than 200 volunteers help out.

In San Clemente, we have the pier, the new walking trail along the ocean and the bustling commercial area on Del Mar. In San Juan Capistrano, we have the downtown area adjacent to the Mission and the train depot area, including the new Regency movie theatre with Rick’s Cafe, its second-floor restaurant and Sarducci’s.

These are all great places to walk, explore and most importantly, to mingle with new people. In each of our three great cities, coffee shops are abound where conversations with strangers are viewed as normal.

I admit—for single women—venturing out alone can be intimidating. Finding a male or female friend to tag along will

ease the anxiety.

Single men and women hoping for love need to get off the couch and out of the house, but not for the sole purpose of meeting a mate. Trying too hard is a turnoff.

Rather, they should go out to enrich their lives through exercise and enjoying fresh experiences. Doing so will make one a more interesting person.

Becoming involved in activities is another way to meet new people. In our tricity area, there are a plethora of service clubs and interest groups that are free to join. Each city has an active Chamber of Commerce. I recommend researching the website, www.Meetup.com, to find activities that one would enjoy. I regularly receive email notices from Meetup.com listing as many as 2,000 activities here in South County.

Of course, there is the Internet. True, singles have to be extra careful when meeting strangers via the Internet. There are lots of scammers and people with evil intentions who prey on vulnerable singles and seniors.

And yet, there are dating sites where seniors have had success meeting mates, like Match.com or Senior People Meet,

but caution is still advised on them.

Because the Internet is worldwide, there is a chance that people who connect online will live in other cities, states or countries.

That’s the nature of the beast. Long-distance relationships present enormous challenges to singles, worthy of a future column.

But on the other hand, the Internet can bring older singles together. I know a local bank branch manager who met his wife online. They both lived in San Clemente, less than a mile apart, but had never met. They are now married. Meeting someone online who lives fairly close is always a possibility.

Older singles should never give up hope.

It’s as simple as putting on your walking shoes and getting out there. Well, almost.

A Rose Grows in the Heart of a Forrest Capistrano Beach residents Forrest Lunsway and Rose Pollard wed on Lunsway’s 100th birthday

T

he fountain of youth, your one true love—these are things many of us search for all our lives. Forrest Lunsway has found both. On Saturday, March 19, Forrest celebrated his 100th birthday.

The best present he got that day: The hand of Rose Pollard (93)—his girlfriend of 28 years—in marriage.

When Rose first met Forrest at a senior center dance in Long Beach, on December 18, 1983, she never could have imagined that 28 years later she’d marry him. He lived in Cypress and she lived in Capistrano Beach, in a house she built with her first husband. She thought for sure the distance would make a romance difficult. “They call it geographically inappropriate, or something,” she said. But Forrest jumped that first hurdle with ease, making frequent trips to visit Rose, even getting her to meet him halfway.

Rose soon found another hurdle to throw his way. “I told him up front I had no intention of getting married. After a few years he asked me ‘how come we never got married?’ and I said ‘because you never asked me.’ So he got down on one knee and said ‘Well I’m asking you now, just set the date.’

I told him ‘I’ll marry you on your 100th birthday.’”

“He called her bluff!” said Pastor Sam Lewis, who officiated the ceremony. “I’ve done a lot of crazy weddings, but this is awesome. The theme of the wedding today is, ‘You’re not done living until you’re dead!’”

Born in Indiana and raised in Kansas, Forrest moved to California when he was 14 years old. He started working as a ditch digger, eventually working for the city on several pipeline projects. “I worked outside all my life, I never worked inside.” He attributes his longevity to his hard work.

Mayor Scott Schoeffel, who was present for the festivities, recalls asking Forrest on his 99th birthday about his secret to longevity. “Just stay busy,” Forrest said.

If you ask Forrest today how he made it to 100, he’ll tell you, “Well to me, I’m not 100 years old. I haven’t hit 65 yet!”

Others who attended the birthday party/ wedding were Mayor Pro Tem Lara Anderson, Council Member William Brough and Assemblywoman Diane Harkey’s District Director Jody Vaughn, who presented Forrest with a letter of congratulations from Governor Jerry Brown.

Just prior to the start of the nuptials, Rose was asked if she had any advice for younger people who have given up on love.

“Now you know, you don’t EVER give up!” she said.

As she waited for the ceremony to begin, Rose finished up her primping and made last minute touch-ups in her dressing room

as Forrest waited outside. He sat quietly, patiently.

When asked if she would like to go outside and talk to him, Rose nervously shakes her head no. “He hasn’t seen me in this dress yet, he isn’t supposed to until the wedding.” Then she stops for a moment, thinking about something, her eyes reaching toward where her future husband sits, “Is he all by himself? Don’t let him be lonely,” she said. In that moment it’s very clear that Forrest will never be lonely. Not as long as he has Rose.

At the top of the ceremony, Pastor Lewis asked, “If there is anyone here who for any reason believes that this wedding should not take place … keep your mouth shut!”

The ceremony, short in length but long in love, brought the crowd to tears. Guests knew they were there for Forrest’s 100th birthday, but had no idea what else was in store for them, as the wedding had been a closely-guarded secret. Cheers of joy filled the room as soon as the happy couple was announced as “husband and wife.”

Forrest, a self proclaimed “man of few

words,” when asked one last time if he had any advice on how to stay young, said, “Just do what comes natural.”

With a wide smile, Pastor Lewis added, “…and get a Rose!”

Forrest laughed in agreement, “That’s right, get a Rose.”

The happy couple spent their first night as a Mr. and Mrs. Lunsway in a room at the Laguna Cliffs Marriott of Dana Point, a gift from the hotel, complete with champagne and strawberries. VIP Limousine Service donated a car for transportation.

The wedding itself was made delicious with Chocolate Covered Strawberries donated by Atria San Juan, a birthday cake donated

by It’s All About Cake and Sparkling Cider, donated by Aegis Senior Living. Keeping with the theme of giving, The Lunsways would like, in lieu of gifts, to have any monies go to the Dana Point Senior Center.

The event itself was put together with the hard work of Vanna Murphy, Site Director at the Dana Point Senior Center and all of the volunteers who contributed their time to the celebrations. DP

BOYS AND GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD • At the Irvine Invite on March 12, Devin Harrison (47.94) finished in first place in 400, Ricardo Campuzano (4:18.06) took second in the 1600, the 400 relay team (43.85) finished in second place, Harrison (22-6) took second in the long jump and Trevor McCloud (42-8) took second in the triple jump. The boys also competed at the California Relays March 18-19 where Matthew Brower took eighth place in the 1600 while the 4x800 relay team (7:59.08) and the distance medley team each finished in first place.

For the girls at the Irvine Invite, Alaina Alvarez (5:08.39) took third in the 1,600, while Katie Dibene (36-1) placed first in the triple jump.

BASEBALL • The Dolphins (5-4, 1-0 SCL) split its doubleheader with Woodbridge on March 16 losing 6-5 to its opponent in the first game before rallying for a lopsided 14-5 win in the second game. In the win, Eric Hsieh went 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBI and a double, while Ryan Kehlet and Collin Gallagher also heated up their bats with two RBI apiece.

Dana Hills then opened South Coast League play with a 2-1 victory while on the road at San Clemente High on March 18. The Dolphins got the early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning sparked by a double by Hsieh before San Clemente tied it all up at 1-1 in the second inning. Dana Hills then sealed the deal with another run in the third inning while preserving the win for the final four innings with stellar defense. Trevor Scott led the team with two RBI on the day, while Hsieh went all seven innings from the mound allotting only five hits.

However, the Dolphins then lost its March 22 meeting with El Dorado losing by the final score of 6-1.

The team now faces Tesoro in another league game on Friday, March 25. Next 7 days: March 26 vs. Foothill/OC Challenge, 11 a.m.; March 30 vs. *El Toro, 3:15 p.m.; April 1 at *Capo Valley, 3:15 p.m.

SOFTBALL • The Lady Dolphins (7-6) recently swung away at the Laguna Hills Tourney March 14-18 going 2-for-2 overall. Dana Hills opened with a 9-6 loss to Huntington Beach before handing San Clemente a 3-0 loss on March 15. The girls then lost 5-1 to Marina before closing out the tournament with a 5-2 victory against Brea Olinda. Dana Hills then jumped right into more action on the diamond at the Northwood Tournament at Bill Barber Park in Irvine on March 19. The team fared well edging Cypress 3-2 in the opening game before batting right past Oak Park by the final score of 4-3. In the win against Cypress, Kat Abramek went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI, while Jenny Hurst also went 2-for-3 with a double. Megan Largey (3-0) earned the complete game win from the circle. Against Oak Park, Hurst went 3-for-4 with a triple and three RBI, Jordyn Larkins went 2-for-3 with a stolen base and one run scored, while Olivia Baltazar (1-0) had two hits, an RBI and a win from the pitchers circle.

BOYS LACROSSE • After losing 9-7 to Palisades on March 12, the Dolphins (0-2 SCL, 3-3-1) have lost two straight before picking up a win on Tuesday, March 22. Dana Hills opened South Coast League play with a brutal 11-2 loss to the always tough to beat Tesoro Titans. From there, the Dolphins went on to lose by the final score of 13-11 against Mission Viejo on the road in another league showdown on March 18. But the boys bounced back and found a much needed 8-6 win against El Dorado on the road on Tuesday. The team now faces El Toro at home in another South Coast League game on Friday, March 25. Next 7 days: March 29 vs. *San Clemente, 5:30 p.m.; March 31 at *Tesoro, 5:30 p.m.

GIRLS LACROSSE • The Lady Dolphins (0-2 SCL, 1-6) opened league play with a 15-3 loss to Tesoro on March 15, were then dismantled by Mission Viejo 14-2 before picking up a 12-6 win against Monte Vista at the Surf, Sun and Stix Tourney in San Diego on March 19. The team went on to face El Toro on the road on Thursday, March 24. Next 7 days: March 29 vs. *San Clemente, 5:30 p.m.; April 1 vs. *Tesoro, 5:30 p.m.

BOYS AND GIRLS SWIMMING • At the Millikan Relays on March 19, Drake Dunn sped to a 49.43 finish in the 100, while the 200 and 400 relay teams also posted impressive times. The boys (2-0 SVL, 4-0-2) then crushed San Juan Hills 128-34 in a league meet on Tuesday, March 22. The girls team (1-1 SVL, 2-2-1) is also doing well so far after beating San Juan Hills 139-18 as well.

Next 7 days: March 24 at Milikan Relays Prelims (Girls) at Belmont Plaza, 3 p.m.; March 26 at Milikan Relays Finals (Girls) at Belmont Plaza BOYS GOLF • Dana Hills (2-1 SCL, 6-4) beat San Clemente twice in a row last week before losing 201-239 to Tesoro on March 22. The team faced Tesoro again on Thursday. Next 7 days: March 29, 31 vs. El Toro at Monarch Beach, 2:30 p.m.

BOYS TENNIS • The Dolphins (3-4) lost 14-4 to Marina on March 16, beat Aliso Viejo 14-4 on March 17 and the earned an 11-7 win against Capo Valley on March 22. The boys faced University on Monday before hosting San Clemente on Thursday. Next 7 days: March 29 at Trabuco Hills, 3 p.m.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL • At the O.C. Tournament March 18-19, Dana Hills (1-1 SCL, 11-7) went 4-for-2 overall beating the like of Fountain Valley, Orange Lutheran, Servite and San Clemente. The team then rolled past Tesoro 3-2 on Tuesday as Christian Hessenauer led with 20 kills.

Dana Hills faced Mission Viejo on Thursday on the road.
