THE LATEST: Orange County Sheriff’s Department deputies said Craig Tanber, 37, is the primary suspect of a stabbing homicide that took place early Monday morning at a bar in Laguna Niguel, about six miles from

Dana Point.

According to a press release distributed Monday evening, OCSD officials said Tanber has an extensive gang history and is believed to be armed and extremely dangerous.

Around midnight on Monday, Tanber was in an “altercation” with Shayan Mazroei, 22, of Laguna Nigel at Patsy’s Irish Pub, located at 28971 Golden Lantern.

During the altercation, Tanber allegedly stabbed Mazroei in the upper torso. Paramedics took him to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Tanber has been associated with the prison-based and Southern California gang known as Public Enemy Number 1, or PENI, a white supremacists organization that, according to FBI information, is known for distribution of methamphetamines, credit card fraud and identity theft.

In 2004, Tanber was implicated in the death of a 26-year-old Huntington Beach man, according to police records. Tanber was one of nine suspects in the case and was eventually found guilty as an accessory to manslaughter. The original case was ruled a mistrial because a juror had performed illegal research on one of the defendants. In 2007, Tanber received six years for his crimes.

According to a Facebook page that was set up for him in 2013, Tanber was recently released from prison. The Facebook page also identifies Tanber as a former student of Dana Hill High School.

Capistrano Grind Skatepark Fundraising Underway THE LATEST: Fundraising efforts are now underway for a skatepark in San Juan Capistrano following city approval of a site on Aug. 11. The approved location will harbor a 20,000-square-foot Capistrano Grind skatepark at the northwest end of the San Juan Capistrano Sports Park, located near the Boys & Girls Clubs of Capistrano Valley, Del Obispo Elementary and Marco Forster Middle School.

Following the approval, Capistrano Grind organizers said it’s vital to keep the momentum going throughout the fundraising and design process. The grassroots group, which has secured multiple local sponsors and is applying to become a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is hoping to raise $1 million to design and construct the park.

In addition to garnering support from San Clemente’s Sheckler Foundation and the Tony Hawk Foundation, Capistrano Grind is fundraising by placing coin canisters in 80 local businesses and selling T-shirts online at capistranogrindskatepark. bigcartel.com. Organizer Nathan Banda said a recycling drive will likely take place at the end of the month, and the group will begin selling refreshments at the San Juan Sports Park snack bar during future soccer games. Dana Point City Manager Doug Chotkevys said San Juan’s Interim City Manager Keith Till called earlier this week to talk about the skatepark, but the two have not yet discussed a potential partnership between the two cities. Chotkevys said he hopes to speak with Till within the next couple weeks to see what the city will request financially.

In addition to raising funds, Banda said the group is addressing concerns about liability by consulting with other cities that have successfully implemented skateparks. Capistrano Grind is also initiating the request for proposal process for the skatepark’s design this week.

Five-city CERT Disaster Preparedness Exercises Set for Sept. 12 THE LATEST: Five area cities will be participating in the annual Community Emergency Response Team’s (CERT) disaster preparedness exercises, hosted by the city of San Juan Capistrano on Saturday, Sept.

12 at the San Juan Mobile Estates.

CERTs from Dana Point, San Juan Capistrano, San Clemente, Laguna Beach and Laguna Niguel, as well as the Tri-Cities RACES emergency radio communications group and a three-city HAM radio communications group, are set to participate.

Over 1,500 CERT members have been trained by the five cities participating.

WHAT’S NEXT: The event, running from 7:30 a.m. to early afternoon and expected to draw several hundred participants, is designed to simulate disaster scenarios and train citizens in a hands-on environment.

A mock earthquake and all residual consequences including injuries to people and animals, damaged homes and other buildings, fires and gas leaks will set the scene. Exercises will cover areas CERT volunteers are trained in: first aid, search and rescue, fighting small fires, communications and logistics.

Local Boy Scouts will be acting as “victims” and Orange County Fire Authority will be on standby to assist in the drills.

CUSD Considers New Calendar Process, 20162017 Start Date THE LATEST: After the Capistrano Unified School District Board of Trustees discussed two calendar-related agenda items Wednesday night, the consensus of the board was to further examine implementing a new, more inclusive process for determining future school calendars, while also revisiting the 2016-2017 academic calendar at the board’s next meeting.

CUSD students began school early this year on Aug. 25 following a March 11 vote by the district board to adjust the academic calendar. The board also voted at that time to begin the 2016-2017 year on Aug. 15, 2016. Trustees said the earlier

start would better align CUSD with other county schools as well as Saddleback College. Currently, 18 other Orange County school districts begin school pre-Labor Day. The switch has been a controversial one, with parents at Wednesday’s meeting, voicing concerns about the consistently hot temperatures in August. Parents also said that while the earlier start date may benefit high school students, they don’t believe it works at the elementary level.

The board’s first discussion Wednesday focused on making the process of forming the school calendar and selecting a start date more inclusive by engaging more community members and making sure that all stakeholders have a voice. Staff proposed creating multi-year school calendars while enabling “maximum semester instruction time.” The new approach presented would involve soliciting more input, creating an online survey and hosting a public forum.

The second agenda item, presented by Trustee John Alpay, asked that the board reconsider amending the Aug. 15 start date for the 2016-2017 academic calendar due to additional data gathered by staff and information from parents. Other trustees noted the educational benefits of an early start, while Alpay argued that what’s right for one district or school may not be the right choice for another.

WHAT’S NEXT: At least four trustees agreed at the end of the discussion to bring back the motion on Sept. 23 to vote on amending the proposed 2016-2017 school calendar. No formal action was taken Wednesday night as the two school calendar agenda items were discussion only.—AJ

A Design for the Future Stakeholders provide input at design charrette for Doheny Village future zoning code

ana Point has taken the next step in working toward a land use plan and zoning code for the Doheny Village Plan in the form of a four-day design charrette.

Opticos Design, Inc. has been retained by the city to work with the land use plan created in 2011 by ROMA Design Group to create a form-based code which will serve to guide future development in the neighborhood.

The event kicked off with an opening presentation on Tuesday and continued with all-day design studio sessions and daily recaps on Wednesday and Thursday.

On opening night Daniel Parolek, principal of Opticos Design, emphasized his company’s discovery—through a number of interviews conducted with a variety of stakeholders—of a desire among the community to celebrate and preserve the surfing heritage in Dana Point.

“It’s really important for a place like Doheny Village, for the team to truly understand what makes the place unique— what historically, culturally, from a physical form standpoint—and build upon those unique characteristics to look at the evolution and long-term strategy for defining the place and letting it evolve,” Parolek said. “Particularly in a place like this where there is such a really rich history, particularly the surf culture—SURFER Magazine, Hobie, surfboard shaping—that although it’s not necessarily present in the

physical form any longer, it’s important to make sure that the village retains its unique character.”

Other concerns, wants and needs of the community that were heard loud and clear included a desire to combat the impression of compromised public safety in the area, and a lack of space for children to play when the former school site was taken away from the neighborhood.

“One-on-one and group interviews allowed us to really understand the place in a much more thorough way than we could get from just reading through documents,” Parolek said. “And then most helpful in a

process like this … is utilizing community members’ knowledge of the place … to make corrections as we’re working, to fine tune our thoughts as we put them down on paper.”

Members of the public—approximately 50 to 75 each day—visited the charrette, being held at Capo Beach Church, 25975 Domingo Avenue in Capistrano Beach, to talk with Opticos planners and designers as they worked on actual drawings depicting various uses for the land in the Doheny Village area.

“We have learned a lot about how Doheny Village has been compromised over the last 30 to 40 years with the school going away, on- and off-ramps cutting it off from the beach and the addition of large retail, big box environments on Doheny Park Road,” Parolek said. “We understand the unique characteristics we can latch onto in making this design—surf history, the train and the maker culture of design and fabrication oriented businesses and craftspeople.”

Discussions ran from the types of businesses and housing desired to parking and the possibility of returning a school site to the area.

Drawings of everything from ballfields to roadway roundabouts were posted for attendees to critique and discuss with the planners.

“The goal is to get at least three feedback loops through this process,” Ursula Luna-Reynosa, director of community development said after the daily recap meeting Wednesday. “We appreciate people

showing up to share their ideas. There was a good group this evening, people who asked some good questions, brought up some good points and gave the (Opticos) team a lot of things to think about.”

The charrette approach to creating new code for the area was more of a city decision to proceed in the direction of formbased code —a method that facilitates the creation of a type of neighborhood designed to the community’s specs by first emphasizing building “form” before building “use.”

“We chose Opticos Design—one of the leading firms for creating form-based codes—and the charrette is really a part of their process,” she said, adding that part of the beauty of the charrette is that community concerns are talked about and problems/solutions are flushed out during the process.

“The success (of the process) will be gauged upon the participation,” LunaReynosa said. “When you look at the total population of Dana Point versus the number who showed up, we’d like to see more people. But there were some folks with great ideas who came through during the day. Hopefully we’ll get some more through Thursday and the report out on Saturday should draw a good crowd.”

A closing presentation, providing a full recap of the week’s work will be held on Saturday, Sept. 12 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Shop Del Prado The Dana Point Chamber of Commerce has continued to award prizes to local shoppers over the summer as part of their ongoing Shop Del Prado incentive program and announced the winners for June and July.

The program is part of a joint effort— started in January—by the city and the chamber to help support businesses on Del Prado Avenue during Town CenterLantern District construction by rewarding customers for shopping, dining and purchasing services in the area.

Shoppers may enter the monthly drawing by submitting receipts from the purchase of products and services from Del Prado Avenue businesses. For every $10 spent, entrants receive one raffle ticket. Prize packages—donated by local businesses—include an overnight stay at a Dana Point hotel, meals for two and a free recreational activity.

In response to Jim Kempton’s column, “Playing the Trump Card” in last week’s paper, Kempton is a blind-eyed left-winger that Dana Point Times gives a lopsided, fully loaded soapbox opportunity to spew every cliché and personal attack he can contrive, to make up for his lack of intellectual arguments. It’s no big deal as long as you believe in totalitarianism, corrupt politicians and presidents that lie to the public (Obama Care, Benghazi, Ferguson) and to a Grand Jury (Monica).

Career politicians like McCain and Kerry have been hiding behind their prison camp and war history like Obama and his colorful cadre hide behind an affirmative action, invisible race shield.

Don’t you dare call out incompetent politicians and inept policies for fear of being called a hero hater or a racist! Liberals are falling over themselves to give failure a chance.

We have a government in a financial tailspin orchestrated by a money-sucking, overregulated operation headed by Obama. We have anarchy in the streets passively endorsed by democrat leaders that selectively enforce laws, and riots fueled by race baiting presidential advisers like Al Sharpton. What do we want? Dead cops! When do we want it? Now! (Black lies matter.)

Kempton is a “master” at character assassination except when it comes to liberals—like when Joe Biden said Obama was the perfect presidential candidate being “black and (because) he is clean and speaks wells” or when he said, “You can’t stop at a 7-Eleven without running into someone with an Indian accent.” I guess it’s OK to be a liberal bigot?

It is easy for a simpleminded zealot to call out Trump as a bad man and a sexist but we have a president that has never held a private sector job. running the entire United States economy and making decisions about who gets the bomb. Dah. I would like a capitalist running capitalism and a president who understands peace through strength.

ILLUMINOCEAN WAS GREAT BUT THE CITY CAN’T AFFORD IT TONI NELSON, Capistrano Beach

In response to the full-page article in the Dana Point Times (Aug. 21-Aug. 27 issue) and many letters to the editor concerning the public and business outcry over the demise of IlluminOcean, I’d like to offer a different view point. I agree whole heartedly that this was a wonderful holiday event that showcased Dana Point, enhanced sales for Harbor businesses, and was great fun for local families and tourists. It was also very expensive. After $1 million for a 2014 light show made up of metal infrastructure that, according to the article and much to everyone’s chagrin, has turned out to be virtually unusable, a repeat performance is expected to cost another $1 million.

Last year’s show was funded 100 percent by Dana Point’s Tourism Business Improvement District (TBID) using funds that are solely contributed by the four major resorts in our town. The resorts are not compelled to contribute these funds for TBID purposes; rather, they voluntarily assess themselves these amounts each year, in order to promote the city of Dana Point as a destination tourism location.

By the way, these four resorts are also responsible for generating the transient occupancy tax (TOT) that pays for more than one-third of Dana Point’s annual expenditures. Instead of criticizing their business judgment, we should be thanking them for their substantial contribution to the city’s economic well-being and our quality of life.

And to what extent did the city benefit financially from sales tax that was reportedly earned by IlluminOcean-related sales increases described by local businesses?

Not much, if at all. First, it is apparent that the city of Dana Point realizes only a small portion of the sales tax generated in the Harbor, which is administered by the County of Orange. A cursory examination of the city’s current budget report shows that the entire sales tax revenue for all parts of the city for the entire year was projected to be up only $305,000 in 2015.

Even in the unlikely event that all of that increase was attributable to IlluminOcean, it is difficult to imagine how such a large expenditure could be justified economically.

This doesn’t mean that IlluminOcean was not profitable for local businesses— and if it was really that amazingly profitable, those same businesses should be Page 8

in a good position to fund it themselves this year. Instead, those businesses may be asking the city to fund the next IlluminOcean because the TBID has declined.

This brings up a serious policy question. Does the city have a duty to pay the marketing and promotion costs of local businesses? I think not. And is the city responsible for hosting a large holiday event for locals and tourists if it cannot be supported by its budget? It would be great fun, but no, not really. The city’s first duty is to provide for public safety, infrastructure, roads, parks, landscaping and other essential municipal ser vices.

If the city is so flush with cash that it can afford such extravagances, then sure!

Bring it on. We’ll all enjoy it and we’ll be happy to share it with our visitors. At this point in its histor y, however, with reser ves lowered by a $24 million investment in Town Center and the Doheny Village Plan and revitalization just getting started, the city simply can’t afford it. IlluminOcean is lovely but it’s adding glitter and glamor while a significant portion of our community is still in rags.

Let’s set aside sufficient funding to complete desperately needed infrastructure throughout the entire city before we spend up to $1 million on a luxur y we can’t afford.

Capo Cares—a community forum for residents, businesses and organizations that reside in and love Capistrano Beach—is committed to seeing Doheny Village revitalized and we think the city is too. This week’s four-day charrette with the Opticos Design team was a great start and we’re ver y grateful that the plan is moving for ward. However, we all know this dream has no chance of becoming reality unless and until sufficient funding is committed, preferably by creating specific reser ve accounts allocated exclusively for the Doheny Village project. The city’s expenditures in Town Center have lowered reser ves significantly. We now have only $15 million in total reser ves (projected June 30, 2015 budget) compared to $45 million in total reser ves in 2008. Please understand that while we’d all like to see a repeat performance of last year’s wonderful light show, the businesses that benefit should pay for it themselves. The city has many more important priorities for its limited financial resources.

cademy Award-winning actor Billy Bob Thornton and his rock band, The Boxmasters, will be performing at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano on Sept. 17, with doors opening at 6 p.m. and the show beginning at 8 p.m. The stop will be part of the group’s N.A.C. Tour, which follows the release of their two most recent albums Somewhere Down The Road, debuting in the spring of 2015, and Providence, a compilation of 11 previously unheard recordings done by the band.

Formed during 2007 in Bellflower, California, The Boxmasters released their first self-titled album, which received critical acclaim. The album included the radio hit “The Poor House” and covered songs by The Beatles, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Mel Tillis, among others. In 2008 the band followed a nationwide tour with a holiday album entitled Christmas Cheer, and a year later released Modbilly which made No. 14 on the 2009 Americana Music Association’s Top 100 Albums of The Year.

DP VIPS Honored for Service City hosts retirement party for 22-year volunteers Dick and Carol Ranger

fter more than two decades of service to the city of Dana Point, Volunteers in Police Services Richard “Dick” Ranger and wife Carol Ranger were honored with a retirement party on Aug. 26 at City Hall.

The couple joined VIPS in January 1993, and in the 22 years since, have contributed more than 9,600 volunteer hours total—4,738 for Dick and 4,924 for Carol. Both have received recognitions too numerous to list here but include a 1995 Community Service Award and a 2006

President’s Volunteer Service Award from the USA Freedom Corps for both. The Rangers have been married for 65 years and are 29-year residents of Dana Point.

They now reside at the Fountains at Sea Bluffs.

The retirement party also served as a celebration of the couple’s birthdays— Carol turned 89 on Aug. 9 and Dick was 92 on Aug. 27.

The Rangers said they chose Dana Point because they shared a desire to retire near “one ocean or another” and found the city’s climate and small town feel superior to East Coast options.

VIPS provide volunteer help to the city via van patrol, bike patrol, clerical support, neighborhood watch programs and special events.

“The service to Dana Point by our VIPS is invaluable,” said Dana Point Police Services Deputy Bernice Lohrman. “They are great ambassadors for the city.”

According to VIPS coordinator and Administrative Deputy Rachel Puckett, VIPS have donated more than 152,000 hours of their time to the program since its inception in 1992 and saves the city approximately $100,000 per year. The program currently has a group of 21 volunteers.

Second item on the list: exercise. Stand-up Paddleboarding (SUP) at Baby Beach in Dana Point Harbor fulfills that goal three to four times per week.

Other items on the list include continuing to write this column, and then preparing for the fantasy football season, which kicks off (pun intended) this week.

One item had been on the original bucket list since 2005, the year the movie Walk the Line—the portrayal of Johnny Cash’s life— was released. I had Courtesy of Tom P. Blake a problem with the movie; I felt the portrayal of Johnny was way too negative.

Why did that concern me? I knew Johnny Cash and worked with him for two years in the mid-1970s when I was the marketing director for the Victoria Station restaurant chain. I had hired Johnny to do our radio commercials and got to know him well. He was one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet.

That 10-year bucket list item: write a book that will reveal the kind and caring side of Johnny Cash that I had witnessed first-hand. I simply wanted to set the record straight. Before retiring, I didn’t have time to finish it.

Finally, 10 years later, over this summer, I wrote the book. Last week, I put the full-court press on finishing it. If you don’t do it that way with a book, you’ll never get it done. On Friday, I uploaded the finished Dana Point Times September 11-17, 2015

book to one of the largest online ebook bookstores in the world, smashwords.com.

I titled this latest work, The Johnny Cash I Knew. A Kind and Caring Man. Most of the 17 pictures included in its pages were taken 40 years ago with my old Kodak camera. I also included many examples of Johnny’s kindness in the book. The most unique experience with Johnny: going into San Quentin Prison with him for a concert.

Many older people tell me they want to write a book, to leave a legacy for their families. Ebooks are a great way to accomplish that goal without much cost and, after they are published, they can be updated and changed. I invite readers to contact me if they have questions about ebook publishing.

So, with the book published, it’s time to turn to other bucket list items, but which ones?

Therein lies the challenge of retirement: which activity to tackle next? Those retirees who said, “You’ll be busier than ever,” were right.

Maybe I’ll open a restaurant. Nope, already done that one. It’s probably time for another trip with Greta.

Dana Hills High School Fall Sports Preview Dolphins take to the pool and links

he 2015 fall prep sports season is about to be in full swing. In the first part of our annual fall sports preview, we will highlight the Dolphins boys water polo team and the girls golf team.

BOYS WATER POLO

After reaching the semifinals of the CIFSS Division 2 playoffs last season, Dana Hills boys water polo head coach Matt Rosa decided his schedule needed to be tweaked if the Dolphins are to reach even higher heights in 2015.

Dana Hills played a very difficult 2014 nonleague schedule, which included matchups against several Division 1 powerhouses. The thought was to have the Dolphins, a Division 2 team, play top-level opponents in order to have them battletested come playoff time. The plan worked well and the Dolphins narrowly missed out on playing for a championship after falling to Los Osos 9-7 in the postseason’s penultimate match.

Rather than have his players run through another slate of Division 1 teams, the Dolphins schedule in 2015 is littered with top-level Division 2 teams. Dana Hills

added Palos Verdes, Damien, Mira Costa and Los Osos to their schedule. All four teams made the playoffs and three of them advanced to the quarterfinals. Rosa hopes the new schedule will better prepare his team for another deep playoff run.

“My nonleague schedule is about as tough as I can get,” Rosa said. “If we get a quarterfinal matchup against Palos Verdes (in the postseason), I want to see them (in the regular season). I went out purposely and added some Division 2 powerhouses.”

The Dolphins are in position to claim another South Coast League title, as they return several standouts at crucial positions.

low and from the perimeter.

With Williams drawing a lot of attention from opposing defenses, Rosa anticipates that junior Jack McLaughlin and sophomore Kai Hanson will have plenty of chances to score. McLaughlin has transitioned from the team’s top lockdown defender to offensive threat this offseason and Hanson, who scored 63 goals last year, fills the role of left-handed shooter from the outside.

“We need to learn to build off (Williams). Obviously teams are going to try and shut him down so we need some other guys to step up, especially as teams start scouting us,” Rosa said.

The Dolphins appear to be set in goal, as first team all-league selection Riley Zachary returns to mind the net.

Sophomore Bryce Dunn, who was Rosa’s first substitution off the bench as a freshman, will be the team’s center defender.

An influx of young talent and a solid veteran anchoring the top of the rotation has the Dana Hills girls golf team ready to compete for a South Coast League title.

The Dolphins lost four seniors from last year’s team, which placed third in league and advanced to the CIF-SS Team Championships, but two rising underclassmen have stepped in over the offseason and locked down two of the Dolphins top-3 spots.

Sophomore Averee Dovsek is currently the team’s No. 2 player and holds a scoring index that is hovering around three to four strokes over par. Freshman Isley Grguric has impressed head coach Glenn Forster with a scoring index that is between six and seven strokes over par.

used to be in the upper 40s down to scores in the low to mid-40s. Grguric recently shot a season-best 34 (+2) at The Ranch at Laguna Beach.

The young talent is still emerging and making an impact but one player the Dolphins can count on this season is returning junior standout Joan Soewondo. Soewondo was the team’s top player last season and after an offseason filled with junior golf tournaments, Forster says her game has sharpened and her scores are lower.

Soewondo has fired off four straight rounds in the 30s for the Dolphins this season and holds a scoring index that is just below par, according to Forster. Soewondo was one of the top match medalists in the county last season and advanced to the CIF State Championship qualifying rounds.

“What I’m impressed with is it doesn’t seem like the pressure is getting to (Soewondo). I think that’s just maturity. I think all those (offseason) tournaments have really helped,” Forster said. “Every aspect of her game is good.” DP www.danapointtimes.com

Dana Hills will play host to rival San Clemente on Sept. 11. The Tritons (1-1) returned to form in their second game of the season against Huntington Beach on Sept. 4, running away with a convincing 51-21 victory.

The San Clemente offense will be directed by junior quarterback Jack Sears, junior running back/wide receiver Brandon Reaves and senior tailback Vlad Dzhabiyev.

n Saturday, Aug. 22 the Surfing Heritage and Culture Center made surfing history in Washington, D.C., at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History by facilitating a significant donation of historic surf culture artifacts.

During this monumental event for the global surf community, SHACC and private donors Spencer Croul, Fernando Aguerre, Keith Eshelman, Sharon Marshall and R. Paul Allen presented the Smithsonian with a timeline of five surfboards representing the early evolution of the surfboard. The boards ranged from a 1920s Duke Kahanamoku redwood to a Hobie bisect from the 1960s. Additional surf culture artifacts donated included an original 16mm print of Bruce Brown’s influential 1966 documentary, The Endless Summer, a large silkscreened print of the film’s iconic poster and a collection of other artifacts related to the film.

“It was one of the most rewarding experiences of my career to be part of this historic weekend in our nation’s capital,” said Paul Strauch, SHACC executive director. “We not only celebrated surfing and surf culture being recognized as catalysts for change and innovation in American society, but we also celebrated the 125th birthday of Duke Kahanamoku with traditional Hawaiian music and hula.”

The public donation ceremony was highlighted by two panel discussions moderated by Jeffrey Brodie, deputy director of the Smithsonian’s Lemelson Center for The Study of Invention and Innovation. The theme for the panel discussions was “Wave of Innovation—Surfing and The Endless Summer.” Educational discussions focused on the innovations and inventions the sport and lifestyle surfing have brought to the American culture. The discussion panels included: The Endless Summer filmmaker, Bruce Brown; co-stars Robert August and Mike Hynson; boogie board inventor Tom Morey; Barry Haun, SHACC curator and creative director, Duncan Wilson, SHACC Education Committee chairman; surfing legend Fred Hemmings; big wave surfing pioneer and surfboard shaper, Greg Noll and Strauch.

Saturday’s donation ceremony was preceded by the first-ever SHACC National Luau and fundraiser, held Friday,

Aug. 21 at the Reagan Building & International Trade Center. During the luau, with Robert “Wingnut” Weaver serving as the master of ceremonies, replicas of the surfboards ridden by August and Hynson in The Endless Summer were sold in a live auction, along with a replica of a Duke Kahanamoku solid wood surfboard. Another highlight of the evening was watching as Cecil Lear, co-founder of the Eastern Surfing Association, being presented with the SHACC Lifetime Achievement Award.
