Five things Dana Point should know this week San Diego Court Rules Against City in Strand Gates Case THE LATEST: After a four-day hearing— Aug. 24 through Aug. 27 in San Diego Superior Court—Judge Randa Trapp ruled Sept. 17 in favor of defendant, the California Coastal Commission, saying the city of Dana Point’s 2010 nuisance abatement urgency ordinance was an illegal attempt to circumvent requirements of the Coastal Act and keep gates and restricted hours in place at the two of five Dana Strand Beach access ways running through the Strand at Headlands community.

In her statement of decision, Judge Trapp found the city of Dana Point “was not acting within the scope of section 30005, subdivision (b) of the Coastal Commission Act” when in 2010 it adopted the urgency nuisance abatement ordinance, citing rampant crime and vandalism in the area resulted in a need to keep the gates and limited access hours.

“The court further finds that there was not, in fact, a nuisance or prospective nuisance at the time the Nuisance Abatement Ordinance was enacted,” Trapp’s statement continued.

The legal battle, ongoing for nearly six years, is one that the Surfrider Foundation (that also filed suit against the gates and restricted hours) has maintained is important, not only locally but across the state and beyond, as it could set a precedent to allow other municipalities to restrict beach access.

“The ruling will protect the public’s right to beach access and preclude Dana Point and other jurisdictions from arbitrarily curtailing that right in the future,” said Surfrider Foundation South Orange County Chapter Chairman Rick Erkeneff in a Sept. 21 Surfrider Foundation press release.

Attempts to reach City Attorney Patrick Munoz for the city’s response to the ruling were unsuccessful.

In 2009 the city erected gates and began locking them from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. from October through April and 7 p.m. to 8 a.m. from May through September. tion the city disagreed with.

In 2010 the Coastal Commission ordered the city to remove the gates and apply for a coastal program amendment, should the city still desire to restrict hours. The city responded by adopting an emergency nuisance abatement ordinance, citing an increase in calls in the area related to crime and vandalism made gates and restricted hours necessary for public safety and within the city’s right to abate nuisances and exempts the restrictions from the Coastal Act. In 2011 a court ruled against the city and the city filed suit against the Coastal Commission, leading to the Aug. 24 through Aug. 27 bench trial.

Among the witnesses called by Munoz was former Dana Point Police sergeant Jim Greenwood (retired) who participated in developing the city’s crime reports used as evidence at the 2011 City Council meeting to support the adoption of the urgency ordinance.

Judge Trapp’s ruling states that Greenwood’s testimony, both to City Council and at the trial, confirmed “the infrequency of the reports coupled with the remoteness in time and the relatively minor offenses shows that there was no nuisance or prospective nuisance in the reference area” and was not “rooted in reality and there was no showing of anything more than a mere possibility of fear of future injury.”

WHAT’S NEXT: City Council met Wednesday in closed session to discuss the court’s ruling. It is unknown what the city’s response to the decision will be.

District Set to Finalize 2016-2017 School Calendar THE LATEST: The Capistrano Unified Board of School District directed staff Wednesday night to return to its next meeting with two academic calendar options to vote on for the 2016-2017 school year.

The CUSD Board of Trustees discussed three options Wednesday night in regards to the 2016-2017 academic calendar—keep the current calendar with an Aug. 15 start date, amend the calendar to mirror this year’s Aug. 25 start date or take time to further engage and poll the public, which would ultimately delay the approval of the 2016-2017 calendar.

on Aug. 15, 2016. Trustees said the earlier start would better align CUSD with other schools and colleges countywide and nationwide.

The board received 19 speaker cards on the topic Wednesday night, with each speaker opposing the current Aug. 15 start date. The board voted 6-1, with Board President Lynn Hatton-Hodson dissenting, to direct staff to return to the next meeting with two calendars for the trustees to vote on—one that mirrors the current 2015-2016 calendar and one that ends the first semester at winter break. This year, the first semester ends Jan. 21.

WHAT’S NEXT: What looks to be the final discussion of the 2016-2017 academic calendar will take place at the board’s Oct. 14 meeting. At that meeting, the board will also discuss the community engagement process moving forward for future academic calendars. Lawmakers Seek to Keep San Clemente Emergency Room THE LATEST: In an effort to emphasize the importance of preserving emergency care services in South Orange County, Assemblyman Bill Brough and State Sen. Patricia Bates hosted a delegation of health legislators, MemorialCare officials and local city leaders from San Clemente, Dana Point and San Juan Capistrano during a tour of Saddleback Memorial Hospital on Friday, Sept. 18.

health care market, Saddleback officials announced in August 2014 they would not be able to sustain the current hospital as a fully-functioning inpatient facility. In order to provide necessary services, the hospital administration and board are trying to transform the San Clemente location into a satellite emergency room, which would continue to provide emergency services.

However, it needs legislative support to be legally compliant.

Current state law prohibits emergency rooms without sufficient inpatient quarters. In March, Bates authored Senate Bill 787 and Brough authored Assembly Bill 911, which, if adopted, would allow Saddleback Memorial to provide freestanding emergency room services at the San Clemente site under a consolidated license.

In April, the Assembly and Senate Health Committees heard the bills, but action was postponed in favor of further study.

AB 911 is currently being reviewed by an Assembly interim study committee. The California Legislature reconvenes Jan. 4.

WHAT’S NEXT: Bates said there will be some hurdles in passing the bill, but with the budding population in San Clemente and surrounding areas, she believes there is a need for a satellite emergency room in the city.

“We’re talking 100,000 directly in the service area,” Bates said. “In terms of South County, we have 350,000 people, many who do come through this facility.”

Bates added that Rancho Mission Viejo development will bring in an additional 28,000 new residents.

Phone Scammers Posing as Deputies THE LATEST: Orange County Sheriff’s Department reported people have been operating a phone scam throughout the area, posing as police officers soliciting money.

“They call people and tell them they have a warrant for their arrest or perhaps they failed to show up for jury duty and now have a fine,” read a message posted Wednesday on the San Clemente Police Services Facebook page. “They even use our headquarters address to provide an air of authenticity. Up in Yorba Linda one caller even identified himself as ‘Captain Holloway.’”

An OCSD Twitter message sent Wednesday afternoon also warned the public of the scam, in which callers identify themselves law enforcement and entice their targets to pay bail or fines in order to avoid arrest for violations including failure to report for jury duty.

The caller ID numbers have often been “spoofed” by the scammers to display the name or telephone number of a local law enforcement agency, the warning reads.

Victims are often instructed to obtain a prepaid credit card and then pay the fines over the phone by giving the caller

the card’s number and ID code over the phone.

OCSD officials vehemently stated they never solicit money over the phone, never request fines or bail be taken care of by only one form of payment, and fines/warrants are handled by the court that issued them.

About a Boat

When, by whom, will an abandoned sailboat, aground for over a month on Capo Beach, be removed?

or Capistrano Bay District residents with homes on the sand at Capistrano Beach along Beach Road, the sight of sailboats and other vessels is a common, and usually welcome, sight. But the presence of a 40-foot sailboat abandoned on the beach after running aground more than a month ago, is getting old and answers to the question of when it will be removed have yet to be answered.

According to Sgt. Mike Scalise of Dana Point Harbor Patrol, deputies responded with lights and sirens to a 6:41 a.m. emergency call on Aug. 21, to a report of a sailboat with a child passenger adrift and in danger of being stuck on shore off the coast of Capo Beach.

The report of a child was found to be incorrect and deputies instead found the boat’s passengers were a man, a woman and a dog—the man, Randy McKenzie, is a transient boater well-known in the area, having been anchoring his boat, The Nightwatch, in and around the harbor for about four years, most often off the coast at Poche Beach.

When Harbor Patrol arrived, Scalise said, the boat was high and dry and his crew could not pull on it because, at that time, it was likely the hull would have been compromised and it would have sunk, creating a bigger disaster—a possible hazardous situation. Also, once a vessel is on the beach, it falls outside of Orange County Sheriff’s Department authority and the vessel owner is responsible to contract with a commercial salvage company for assistance, he added.

“The passengers refused to get off the vessel even after we gave several orders over the PA telling them to don life vests and get off,” Scalise said. “It is an extremely dangerous situation when a vessel grounds in the surf line. People can get injured or killed. They didn’t get off until quite a while later, when fire authorities and landside deputies arrived on-scene.”

Four to five hours later, Scalise said McKenzie got back on the boat and used the radio to send out maydays in an attempt to get assistance from the Coast Guard.

“It was not a mayday at that point,” Scalise said, adding that McKenzie was not cited for dragging anchor or for broadcasting a fake mayday.

McKenzie said he and his wife Barbara Adams lived on that boat and were reluctant to get off because it was their home and he believed, at the time, that it could be saved.

McKenzie also disputes the deputies’ claim that the boat was dragging anchor at the time it became beached.

“We woke up that morning when our keel hit the beach,” McKenzie said. “I stayed on the boat for about three hours and kept trying to get it to move. We were not dragging anchor. Our anchor was cut in the middle of the night and we ended up on the beach.”

According to authorities, the boat anchor was attached and the anchor line was taut, stretching out to sea, and was one of the obstacles the Harbor Patrol boat had to maneuver around when first responding to the grounding.

The following day, McKenzie returned and began trying to pull the boat off the beach with the help of another vessel. He was again ordered by Harbor Patrol to stop, as the potential for lines snapping and causing the potential for injury to beachgoers was unacceptable, Scalise said.

McKenzie said he is frustrated and feels that the Harbor Patrol is “happy to have me out of there” and won’t listen to how he and his wife were victims in this case.

He said their saga began when another transient boater (transient boater is a term used to describe a boater without a permanent slip, who comes and goes from the harbor) stole his dinghy and motor.

He reported the crime to the Harbor Patrol but they did not arrest the other man and returned the dinghy and motor to McKenzie. The other man, McKenzie said, is responsible for cutting his anchor line in the middle of the night, following a days-long disagreement.

OCSD is aware of some sort of bad blood between McKenzie and the other boater, centering on a disagreement about the dinghy but said that it is a civil issued between the two.

“As far as law enforcement is conPage 8

cerned, this is an ongoing boat accident investigation which may turn out to be a vessel abandonment issue,” Scalise said.

“I don’t know if the county or state will go after them but I am sure the boat owner is responsible for paying for the cleanup,” Scalise said. “But because they ended up stripping the boat and just leaving it there, abandoning it, its location in front of a private community has landed it in a strange situation.”

The situation is complicated by the fact that the Capistrano Bay District has no ownership of the beach, the beach is a county beach, but the boat sits below the mean high tide line puts it on state land.

And the Coast Guard, another authority mentioned as a possibility for the boat’s removal, has no jurisdiction over a vessel once it is aground.

Don Russell, general manager of the Capistrano Bay District, said the homeowners’ association’s main concern is with public safety and potential damage to the homes that could be caused by the boat.

“I’ve tried to contact the OC Parks director and have so far gotten no response,” Russell said. “The boat owner was fairly available in the first two weeks. I even got him to cut the mast off so that it wouldn’t have the potential to go through a window or wall had it been moved by the surf. But it’s been over a month and he’s indicated to me that he is not financially able to pay for a salvage operation. Residents are very concerned. The Capistrano Bay District doesn’t have any property ownership out on the beach; it’s not even covered on our liability insurance.”

Russell said he also contacted the National Response Center and the state fish and game department.

“The Coast Guard sent a team to assess the situation from the point of view of safety and environmental concerns—be-

cause of the motor on board, the head and pollutants associated with both,” Russell said. “But so far we have no idea who will move it or when.”

McKenzie said he is also at wits end about what to do and that he feels like the Harbor Department has had it in for him all along.

“A few weeks before this happened a boat went aground between Riviera Beach and San Clemente State Beach and that boat was gone within eight hours,” McKenzie said. “I don’t understand why they didn’t let me retrieve my property. Why did they stop me from pulling my boat off the beach? Then they told me it’s going to cost a lot of money to pull it off. I could have easily gotten it off the beach but they told me they would arrest me if and the captain of the tow vessel and impound my vessel if I pulled it off the beach. I don’t have the money to pay for it. I have nothing. And now we are homeless.”

McKenzie said he’s called the Coast Guard, Supervisor Lisa Bartlett, OCSD Internal Affairs, and anyone else he could think of “to find out why they didn’t arrest that guy.”

On Sept. 16 McKenzie dropped off paperwork at Harbor Patrol headquarters, also delivering copies to the Capistrano Bay District HOA office, officially relinquishing his rights and surrendering all ownership of his vessel.

Attempts to reach the California State Lands Commission and the County of Orange for their opinion on whose jurisdiction the boat now falls under were unsuccessful.

Rebel Without a Pause James Dean was youth culture’s first modern anti-hero

On Sept. 30, 1955, on a long straight stretch of Route 466 near Paso Robles, James Dean spoke those last dying words to his friend in the passenger seat as they hurtled out of Los Angeles en route to the road races in Salinas, California. The next day’s front page photos around the world showed the mangled remains of “Little Bastard,” Dean’s Porsche whose 100-mph collision with an unwitting farm truck left him crushed on the steering column. Only days after completing work on Giant and with only two other films to his name (East Of Eden and Rebel Without A Cause) James Dean became a new cultural archetype; the defiant yet charismatic angry young man, the iconoclastic world-wounded rebel. He would be a defining inspiration for Elvis, Bob Dylan, Morrissey, The Clash, John Lennon (who noted that without Dean, “The Beatles would never have existed”) and successive generations of film actors.

This dark, brooding, magnetic anti-hero could never have imagined the emotional effect his roles would have on the next half century.

For more than a year after his death, Dean received over 2,000 fan letters a week at Life Magazine, and Warner Brothers was still receiving 7,000 fan letters a month as late as 1957. When a bowling alley in Los Angeles decided to exhibit the remains of his Porsche, they sold 800,000 tickets—and would have sold a million—had they not cut off the offer.

The cult that has grown out of his short

life is staggering. Dozens of documentaries, biographies, TV programs, songs, fan clubs and a slew of products continue right to this day.

Dean was not only an extraordinarily gifted actor; he was a metaphor for the new youth culture that would become the baby boomer legacy—and his. Watching Dean’s roles today, one can’t help but marvel at the depth of his talent—and the power of his portrayals. His instinctive interpretations of the complexly confused Cal Trask in East Of Eden, the troubled, driven Jim Stark in Rebel Without a Cause and the proud but deeply scarred Jett Rink in Giant mirrored the looming changes occurring in American society.

Dying so young sealed Dean’s fate as a cultural icon, but it was more than that.

Call it timing or destiny, Dean’s emergence coincided with much of our identity today; our entire culture has embraced him as the original anti-hero who is the essential model of modern stardom. Dean did not see the farm truck pulling into his path, nor could he have ever foreseen the impact of his ground-breaking portrayals.

In 1977, a Dean memorial was erected in Cholame, California. The sculpture features a handwritten epitaph, one of Dean’s favorite lines from Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince: “What is essential is invisible to the eye.”

Now we know the city of Dana Point has lost their minds. First they cancel IlluminOcean and now you can’t put a rock in with the rocks!

Come on people, get your priorities straight. It’s embarrassing.

At the Movies: ‘Everest’ Visuals Thrill, Storytelling Falls Short

uring a period where movie studios are experimenting with releasing some of their films on VOD at the same time as they’re in theaters, Universal Pictures goes in a completely different direction with their new action flick Everest. Filmed in 3D, the movie is spending its first week of release strictly on IMAX screens before also playing on regular 2D screens. Director Baltasar Kormákur has the impressive cast and stellar effects for a good action feature, but not exactly the storytelling.

Based on a real incident in 1996, Rob Hall (Jason Clarke) and Scott Fischer (Jake Gyllenhaal) are two rival expedition group leaders following each other to the top of Mount Everest. Adventurers along for the journey include mailman Doug Hansen (John Hawkes), journalist Jon Krakauer (Michael Kelly) and Dr. Beck Wethers (Josh Brolin). Everest is a thrill to see on a huge IMAX screen, although it is also obvious that the direction was always intended for the 3D-IMAX format, and thus some scenes might not translate well to 2D viewing. Some actors get plenty of exposure—Clarke and Brolin— while others—Gyllenhaal and Knightley— feel almost wasted. Strangely for such an epic setting and event, the pacing is surprisingly slow and the plot never feels fully expanded upon. On Stage at the Coach House: John Waite

ong-time English rock star John Waite will be coming to the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano, Friday, Oct. 2, with doors opening at 6 p.m. and the show beginning at 8 p.m.

According to his website, Waite found his first taste of success as bassist and lead singer of the English rock group, The Babys, which charted twice, both times at No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100, with “Isn’t It Time” in 1977 and “Every Time I think of You” in 1979. release five albums over five years, eventually disbanding in 1980.

In 1982, Waite launched his own solo career with the debut album Ignition, featuring the hit single “Change.” No Brakes, his next album, catapulted the English performer into the international spotlight. The album would become a Top 10 Billboard album in the United States thanks to the hit, “Missing You,” which peaked at No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. The song would knock Tina Turner’s “What’s Love Got To Do With It?” out of the No. 1 spot, and in

response Turner would record her own rendition of Waite’s single.

After several more successful album releases, Waite would rejoin members of his old group, The Babys, and form Bad English. In 1989, Bad Photo: Courtesy English’s “When I See You Smile” made No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and became a gold-certified single. The self-

titled album the golden single came from reached Billboard’s Top Five and sold close to 2 million copies in the United States alone. After their second album, Backlash, Bad English would disband in 1992. By 1995, Waite revived his solo career and continues to release new work to this day.

Anatomy of a Romance Scam

T

hree months ago, I started a Finding Love After 50 Facebook group.

It is a friendship group, not a dating group, but people might still meet a potential mate there.

I decided to make it what Facebook calls a “closed” group to which I must approve of all members who want to join. In that way, I can screen people by checking their profiles to attempt to keep scammers and people with bad intentions out of the group.

While the membership has grown to 450, I’ve rejected more than 43 people and removed a few who made inappropriate posts. Last week, Rose, from South Africa, who has ON LIFE AND LOVE AFTER 50 read my online articles for

By Tom Blake years, emailed: “A goodlooking man joined our group last week. He contacted me immediately; we email every day. He says he is working in England and when he finishes there next week, he wants to visit me and for me to be his woman.”

I remember approving him. His profile revealed a handsome guy originally from England, now residing in Oklahoma; his Facebook page showed nothing suspicious.

Rose added, “My concern: why so quick? He says we could live a few years here and then relocate back to Germany, where I’m from, or Oklahoma. I asked him how old he is, if he’s divorced or has kids and what he’s doing, and he doesn’t respond. I’m very worried.”

I told Rose to be very careful. Anybody who tries to rush a relationship after one week has ulterior motives.

When Rose emailed him that she was uncomfortable, he responded: “...I like going to beach, swim, dance, write poem, dinner, hanging around with friends and going to church…I have been married twice my first wife died from fibroid complications...

“I had to get out of retirement to quickly

see what I can do to get back on my feet,” the email continued. “Luckily for me I got a contract from a construction company in Africa and I am currently importing 4,000 tonns [sic] of 16mm Steelrods [sic] that will go to Benin...This is my last job as I am finally planning to settle down with a woman I want to grow old with live a life of happiness and love together. I hope you are ready to be spoilt beyond measures…”

The grammatical errors have not been edited to reflect the nature of the email.

I wrote to Rose: “For a guy whose first language is English, this email is filled with grammar, capitalization and spelling mistakes. It was not written by an English-speaker. He’s a scammer; cut him off immediately.”

Rose responded: “You are right. Fifteen minutes ago he came online and said he was robbed of all of his possessions ... then he asked for $400 to lend him and he will fly back to the USA to get money and then come straight to South Africa to be with me.” She blocked him.

Everything romance scammers post is bogus. They search online for vulnerable people and try to exploit them. I removed him from our group, grateful for Rose’s diligence and certain we had stopped a scammer.

When I posted this incident, several women said he tried to befriend them in that first week as well.

And while email, websites, and social media are wonderful and useful tools, we must realize that anyone can be anyone hidden behind the mask of communication.

he Ocean Institute will welcome Chris Welsh, chief pilot for Deep Sub LLC, who will offer tours of his deep diving submersible and catamaran mothership on Wednesday, Sept.

30, beginning at 5:30 p.m., followed by a presentation on his work.

Deep Sub LLC operates a deep diving submersible and mothership capable of going to depths of 36,000 feet. Following the ship and sub tours, Welsh will talk about the sub’s design, dive locations, planned exploration and scientific goals.

Dolphins Cross Country Teams Dominate in Hawaii

Every season, the Dana Hills boys and girls cross country teams travel to Hawaii just before the cross country season kicks into full gear. It may seem like a nice vacation and a way to ease into competition, but the Dolphins traveled to the island state in top form.

The Dana Hills boys team took first place in the varsity division and the girls team captured second at the Iolani Invitational on Oahu on Sept. 19.

The Dolphins boys team had five runners finish inside the top-7, securing a convincing 25-66 victory over second-place JSerra. Senior Mason Coppi finished third while Jack Landgraf, Jake Ogden, Brandon Hough and Thomas Wilfert filed in behind, respectively. Senior Colin Stein took ninth.

The girls squad had a solid pack finish near the top during their second-place effort. Seniors Camille Perkins and Sienna Serrao finished 14th and 15th, respectively. Freshmen Jaden Haskins and Sarah Meng took 17th and 18th, respectively and Lauren Soto placed 21st, giving Dana Hills five runners inside the top-21.

Dana Hills will host some of the top programs from the area on Sept. 26 at their annual Dana Hills Invitational.

Tennis Gets First League Win Over Cougars

The Dana Hills girls tennis team started out South Coast League play with a dominating 18-0 win over Capistrano Valley on Sept. 22.

Dana Mackensen was especially efficient for the Dolphins, dropping only one game en route to her set wins of 6-0, 6-1, 6-0.

Dana Hills was scheduled to play Aliso Niguel on Sept. 24. Results were not available at press time.

A crucial match against San Clemente is set for Oct. 1. The Tritons and the Dolphins tied for first place in league last season and figure to be the frontrunners for the title again in 2015.

Tritons Take First Match Against Dolphins Golf Team

In a pivotal South Coast League showdown, the San Clemente girls golf team edged Dana Hills 210-215 on the Dolphins home course at El Niguel Country Club on Sept. 23. Dana Hills (7-1, 0-1 league) junior Joan Soewondo carded an even-par 36 to earn match medalist honors, but the Tritons (4-2, 2-0) were able to put together a solid team effort and grab the early lead in the league standings.

The Dolphins will host San Juan Hills in a league contest on Oct. 6.

Wolverines Aerial Attack Too Much for Dolphins Football

Aliso Niguel senior quarterback Nick Chapman and his receivers got off to a hot start against the Dana Hills football team in a nonleague contest on Sept. 18. Chapman threw five touchdown passes to four different receivers in the first half as the Wolverines breezed their way to a 49-6 victory.

Chapman connected with Blake Sabol twice, Kyle Daggett, Andre Cotton and Tanner Clarke for scoring plays in the first 24 minutes. Cotton ran in a 55-yard touchdown three minutes before the half to give Aliso Niguel a commanding 42-0 lead.

Dana Hills (0-4) scored late in the third quarter on a five-yard Harry Solakian touchdown run.

The Dolphins will travel to play Garden Grove, the defending CIF-SS Southern Division champion, on Sept. 24. The Argonauts enter the game having won their previous two games, during which they scored a combined 70 points.

Getzlaf Shootout Returns DANA POINT TIMES

T

he fi fth annual Getzlaf Shootout golf tournament took place at Monarch Beach Golf Links on Sept. 15. The annual charity event, put on by Anaheim Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf and his wife Paige, raises money to fund the nonprofit CureDuchenne, which is trying to find a cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a genetic disease that causes muscle degeneration and affects more than 300,000 young boys around the world.

This year’s event raised $440,000 and in its five-year history, has raised more than $1.3 million.

Getzlaf was joined by his fellow Ducks teammates at the event, including Corey Perry, Ryan Kesler, Cam Fowler, Clayton Stoner and Andrew Cogliano. Former

POKER Fish for Life, a volunteer organization that puts on special events for individuals with special needs, is hosting its annual Texas hold’em poker fundraiser at the Dana Point Yacht Club on Oct. 3.

Fish for Life takes dozens of individuals with special needs on fishing excursions several times each year. Attendees get to enjoy a day on the water and are aided by Dana Wharf fishing crews and volunteers.

All proceeds raised at the Texas hold’em event will go directly toward Fish for Life.

All poker night participants will receive a 3/4-day fishing trip pass for Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching. There will be trophies and prizes awarded to the top-5 players.

Cost to reserve a seat at a table is $100.

Admission for non-poker players is $25.

The Getzlaf family took up the charity cause after a meeting with Hawken Miller, a Southern California resident who has Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Miller, who is now 18 and about to begin studying at USC, was on hand at the tournament.

“Knowing that Hawken and thousands of boys with Duchenne lose muscle has inspired me to not take one single practice or game for granted,” Getzlaf said in a press release. “I think of Hawken out on the ice and it makes me play harder. He inspires me.”

YOUTH BASKETBALL The City of Dana Point Youth co-ed basketball league is looking for boys and girls ages 6-7 to join in their league, which begins in early November.

Players, who must be of age as of March 1, 2016, will take part in one hour-long mid-week practice each week and will play one game on Saturdays. The season runs from December through February.

The league is also searching for volunteer coaches.

Seven first-place trophies, 41 total, brought home from WSA and NSSA Open events

rophy cases in San Clemente and Dana Point/Capistrano Beach are likely bowing under the new weight of 41 trophies earned collectively by local surfers in Western Surfing Association and National Scholastic Surfing Association Open competitions last weekend, Sept. 19 and 20.

Sunny weather, warm water and solid surf made for fun and exciting action at both events, with the athletes’ skills on full display.

At event No. 2 of the NSSA Open season in Oceanside, eight surfers brought home the hardware in 10 divisions. Jett Schilling and Kirra Pinkerton, both of San Clemente, earned two trophies apiece, Schilling with wins in both Boys and Juniors, and Pinkerton with a victory in Girls and a fourth-place finish in Women.

Schilling got special recognition as one of the NSSA Performers of the Event, according to NSSA director Janice Aragon.

“Jett’s surfing at Oceanside was off the charts in both the Boys and upper level Juniors categories,” Aragon said in the final results announcement. “The 12-yearold dynamo … is surfing well beyond his years and at an incredible level with razor sharp surfing.”

GROM OF THE WEEK EZRA MCPHILLIPS

ew to competition surfing this season, shortboarder Ezra McPhillips, 8, of San Clemente had a great showing Sunday in Ventura at event No. 2 of the Western Surfing Association Championship Tour, winning a third-place trophy in the Micro Grom Girls U10 division.

She started as a 3-year-old surfing tandem with her dad, pro surfer Colin McPhillips, and has since looked to him and her brothers, also competitive surfers, for guidance and coaching.

In her first year on the amateur tour, and able to catch her own waves, Ezra said she is happy to have her dad in the water with her as part of the WSA’s push-in divisions because she sees it as a great way to get her competition game down.

Ezra has been practicing as much as possible, she said, mostly at San O, her favorite break, as well as enjoying her closest home breaks.

“We live by Lasuens and T Street so we get to go to the beach a lot and I get to surf a lot,” she said. “I’ve been practicing and trying really hard.”

Ezra also enjoys school and is excited about having started the third grade this year at Concordia Elementary. Her favorite subjects are art and math.

Art is also an interest she pursues outside of school as a hobby. She enjoys playing soccer as well, although surfing is her favorite sport.

“I like surfing because going really fast is fun and being in the ocean with my friends just feels really good,” Ezra said. “I like being
