Five things Dana Point should know this week Cove Road Closed Due to Rockslide THE LATEST: Cove Road at the Dana Point Harbor, and portions of the Cove Road parking lot, were closed around 8 a.m.

Tuesday due to a small rockslide, authorities said.

Basketball-sized boulders rolled down the bluff onto Cove Road near its intersection with Dana Point Harbor Drive.

By 10:20 a.m. the rocks had been removed but the road remained closed as a precaution.

According to Kory McCain, senior park ranger for OC Parks south coastal operations, no injuries or damage to vehicles were reported.

WHAT’S NEXT: Additional cause for concern remains due to few large rocks near the top of the bluff that appear to have been loosened by the slide.

“We want to make sure the hillside is safe for pedestrians and motorists before we reopen the road,” McCain said.

Orange County Sheriff’s Department officials and OC Parks rangers at the scene said there is currently no time estimate for when the road will reopen.

DP Harbor Patrol Deputy Rescues Two Men Adrift at Sea for Over 7 Hours THE LATEST: Two men on inflatable pool toys were rescued Tuesday, about a mile off the coast of Laguna Beach by Dana Point Harbor Patrol.

Orange County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Anthony Larios, based at Dana Point Harbor Patrol, responded to a call just before 4 p.m. Tuesday reporting two subjects aboard an inflatable raft in the area of Laguna Beach.

According to Larios, the caller was the girlfriend of one of the men and told the OCSD dispatcher that her boyfriend and her friend had called her from a cell phone saying they were somewhere in the ocean, had drifted out to sea and weren’t able to bet back to shore.

when, having been unable to locate the men by 4:14 p.m. made a call to request additional assets—a helicopter from Huntington Beach, an additional boat out of Newport Harbor and the U. S. Coast Guard.

Minutes after making those calls, Larios said he saw two objects floating in the distance, about two miles off the coast.

“At first I thought they were lobster pot buoys but as I got closer I noticed it was two subjects on two separate rafts,” Larios said, adding that at the time a 3-foot swell and 15- to 20-mph winds were creating a lot of chop and whitewater, hampering visibility.

Just after 4:30 p.m. Larios lifted two men, a 38-year-old and a 28-year-old, onto the Harbor Patrol boat and headed back to the harbor. The men, one from El Monte and one from Glendora, had two cell phones and binoculars in a case.

“I made contact with the older of the two men first and found him lying on his back on an inflatable raft, hypothermic, shaking vigorously, dehydrated. His tongue was white and dry and he was barely able to speak,” Larios said. “I dragged him onto the boat and then headed to the other victim about 100 feet away.”

The other man, he said, was sitting in an inner-tube style flotation toy and appeared to be in good condition. He asked the second victim to lie next to the first victim to help warm him, covered the two with a blanket and headed back to the harbor.

Larios canceled his request for additional assets and instead requested the Orange County Fire Authority to meet him at the harbor with paramedics. An OCFA fire boat met Larios’ boat at the harbor and transferred a paramedic onboard.

Larios then drove to the fuel dock were ambulances were waiting.

“The men had entered the water at 9 a.m. in Corona Del Mar and drifted about 7 miles,” Larios said.

WHAT’S NEXT: The older victim was taken to Mission Hospital for treatment.

The younger victim was checked out by paramedics, refused transportation to the hospital and was picked up by a friend.

Coastal Commission Approves SONGS Dry Cask Storage THE LATEST: The California Coastal Commission voted unanimously Tuesday to approve the permit for Southern California Edison to store spent nuclear fuel in drycask storage on site at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station.

Although the commissioners as well as dozens of people in attendance agreed the long-term solution to storing the fuel on the coastline is not ideal, until the Department of Energy commits to a permanent storage facility the additional cask storing will be necessary. Songs already has above-ground dry storage as well as wet storage of the fuel in storage tanks.

The new dry-cask storage units, contracted through Holtec International, will hold about 3.6 million gallons of spent nuclear fuel. SCE representatives said they need about 80 additional canisters in order to store the fuel at the facility.

Historical Society’s 15th annual home tour to feature Capistrano Beach properties, Doheny homes

T

he winding, tree-lined streets of Capistrano Beach give the neighborhood an eclectic feel, having welcomed countless architectural styles of homes throughout the years. Tucked in among the houses—from sleek, angular, modern structures to the prevailing styles of more than eight decades—are some of the most historically significant, and most beautiful, homes in southern Orange County. On Sunday, Oct. 11, the Dana Point Historical Society’s 15th Annual Home Tour and Reception will offer the public a look at six such properties that live up to this year’s theme, “The Historic Homes & Hidden Treasures of Capistrano Beach.”

The homes and gardens on this selfguided driving tour will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a reception from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the newest of the homes, a mid-century house, beautifully decorated with treasures the owners collected while living in Asia. Situated atop a steep hillside, the outdoor spaces are reminiscent of a wooded forest, including a waterfall leading to a stream at the bottom of the canyon the house overlooks. Built in 1954, the home has undergone a number of additions and renovations, today making it very livable, and with numerous indoor and outdoor living spaces, well-suited for Dana Point Times October 9-15, 2015

entertaining.

The other five properties are homes built as part of Capo Beach’s original 1929 development by Ned Doheny.

Tour headquarters, guest registration/ ticket sales, program guides with a tour map, historical displays and a boutique will be located at the home of Karen and Steve Abraham, a 1930 Doheny home at 34532 Camino Capistrano. Over the years the house has doubled in size through additions and renovations and retained the charm and style of the Doheny era, with features such as hand-stenciled beams and a wrought iron bannister.

The Abrahams bought the house about three years ago and said they both fell in love with it for its charm and historical significance.

“The fact that it was a Doheny property was really of interest and we especially liked the Spanish Colonial style,” Steve Abraham said. “We were really drawn to the architectural details of the period—the stucco, terra cotta tiles, wrought iron and especially the cupola details.”

Karen Abraham agreed, adding that they have continued to make improvements to the house since purchasing it, careful to retain its historical features in the process and mindful of making changes that enhance and fit with the original architecture. Examples of this can

be seen in the home’s outdoor entertaining courtyard, where terra cotta tiles replaced grass and eyebrows above arched doorways retain the home’s character.

“I love the 80- to 100-year-old reclaimed wood that we added in the kitchen and my husband’s library,” she said. “I love the architectural detail of the original star-shaped windows designed to help circulate the air in different directions— kind of an early form of air conditioning.

We just love it.”

When asked why they agreed to open their home for the tour, both agreed that Doheny homes are such an integral part of local history to be shared, experienced and appreciated.

“Karen and I both have a love for historical properties and we feel that we’d like the public to be able to enjoy the house as much as we do,” Steve Abraham said.

Registration/ticket sales will also be offered at Doheny House No. 1, 35101 Camino Capistrano, recently fully restored by owners Dr. Dean and Joyce Clark. Built in 1928, the home was the first built in the Doheny Capistrano Beach development and sits at the intersection of Camino de Estrella and Camino Capistrano, atop the palisade bluff overlooking Capistrano Beach.

Authentic 1920s furniture and fixtures were carefully researched making the home’s recent renovation true to its historical beginnings and the large lot offers an immense, panoramic view looking out to sea toward the Headlands.

Guests should note that, unlike past years’ tours, registration and ticket sales will not be offered at the Historical Society museum. Tickets are $30 for Historical Society members and $35 for non-members.

Three more restored and beautifully furnished 1929 Doheny homes and gardens in the Spanish Colonial style on the tour will offer guests the chance to explore a cottage rescued from demolition twice, one with an original fireplace uncovered from behind a stone façade and restored, and a 1920s workman’sstyle cottage transformed into a decorator’s showcase.

This cottage sits on a double street-tostreet lot with a large magical maze of a hidden garden and the 1980-built combination lecture hall and home, Gep’s Folly, built in 1980 by former owner was wellknown antiquarian Gep Durenberger. The garden—with its pool, outdoor rooms, summer house, aviaries, sculptures and fountains—was created by well-known designers James Yoch and “The Garden Lady” Carole McElwee.

Now owned by interior designer Eric Guenther—proprietor of Whim Home, a design store and studio in San Juan Capistrano—the cottage, Gep’s Folly and the gardens have become a beautifully furnished stage for his talent and creativity where he enjoys entertaining both friends and clients. The property has been featured in design magazines such

as, World of Interiors, House Beautiful, House and Garden, Victoria and Southern Accents.

Guenther said the historic significance of the Doheny cottage also drew him in, however having been owned, designed, and in the case of the Gep’s Folly house, built by fellow decorative arts practitioner Durenberger, played a large role in his strong affinity for the property.

“The historic significance of a Doheny house was very important to me, but the person who owned it prior to me and his contribution to the decorative arts, was enormous,” Guenther said. “He started the decorative arts movement in Orange County and set up a facility to kind of support that. His contribution was significant and therefore his expression of his craft here was very significant.”

Guenther said his interior design philosophy is not about decoration for decoration’s sake but instead an expression of self and the home—a treasure trove of beautiful collections curated into artful vignettes—is the quintessential form of self-expression, both in what he has done and what Durenberger and the others before him did on the property.

“These homes are an important part of the history of this city and a true expression of California, both through the decorative arts movement and the style of architecture, embodied in what people like the Dohenys were trying to do,” Guenther said. “I feel that the homes are much bigger than we are. They’ve been here longer; they represent a lot to a lot of people. They represent a combination of multiple talents coming together. I don’t feel like this home is just mine to possess.

I feel a responsibility to show it to other people so that they may enjoy and appreciate people’s past contributions to it.”

Historical Society President Barbara Johannes, who co-chaired the tour with Sandie Iverson, said the event is the society’s biggest annual fundraiser, raising money that enables the group to host city and special historical occasion events and to bring the community together to learn about and preserve the city’s heritage.

“We would like to thank the six homeowners, 80 sponsors and 100 volunteers who helped organize this tour,” Johannes said. “In Capistrano Beach and Dana Point we have two of the earliest planned communities along the coast, and the homes that have been preserved here speak to our history in the 1920s and ’30s, a history we are eager to share.

“Personally, I’m a historian, a history major and a decorative arts minor, so it’s everything I’m interested in,” she added.

“And of course, when you’re interested in something, you want and hope other people will like it too.”

Many people who spoke against the plan wanted SCE to postpone the decision and continue to ask the DOE for a permanent storage site outside of Orange County or the California coast rather than enter a 20-year agreement in which, they said, the fuel could remain at SONGS in perpetuity.

Commissioner Roberto Uranga said inaction would be worse than any action, as the scope of the project is massive and long-term.

“This is a problem that’s not going to go away and doing nothing today doesn’t help the problem; it just kicks it down the road,” Uranga said. “We have to do something today. While it is our mission to protect the coast, doing nothing keeps it in danger.”

WHAT’S NEXT: The permit agreement comes with a contingency. SCE will be required to have a thorough report and inspection of the technology by 2022, five years after the expected storage would be initiated and the first phases of the deconstruction of SONGS. Additionally, commissioners voted to send a letter to the DOE Secretary Ernest Moniz urging a

solution for permanent spent fuel storage.

Officials said they have spoken with facilities in Texas and New Mexico for possibly storying the spent fuel, but the DOE has the final decision.

Rep. Darrell Issa, R-California 49, cosponsored the Consolidated Storage Act bill, which was introduced last week. The bill would match regional areas for interim storage of spent nuclear fuel. —Eric Heinz

A San Diego Superior Court judge, last month, ruled in favor of the California Coastal Commission, and against the city, saying a 2010 emergency nuisance abatement ordinance the city adopted in order to keep gates and restricted hours at the two of five Dana Strand Beach access paths, was an illegal attempt to circumvent Coastal Act requirements.

Planning Commission to Discuss Regulation of Hours for Public Facilities Including Mid-Strand and Central Strand Beach Accessways

WHAT’S NEXT: According to the meeting agenda report, the council’s intent is to consider adopting an ordinance to amend the Municipal Code regulating hours of operation at public facilities at the Headlands, amendments the Coastal Commission has maintained would require a CDP. “Although this has been a matter of some dispute,” the agenda report states, “the City Council has decided to consider processing a Coastal Development Permit as part of the proposed Municipal Code amendments. Thus, in accordance with Section 9.69.030(b) of the Dana Point Zoning Code, and due to past litigation on the issue, staff is recommending that the Planning Commission refer any action on a potential Coastal Development Permit along these lines to the City Council.”

THE LATEST: The consent calendar on the agenda for the next scheduled meeting of the Dana Point Planning Commission, set for Oct. 12, includes a request to “refer action on a Coastal Development Permit to the City Council.”

The recommendation asks the commission to refer action on a CDP “regulating hours of operation of public facilities, including the Mid-Strand Beach Access and Central Strand Beach Access,” the two pathways leading from Strand Vista Park to Dana Strand Beach, through the

DRUNK DRIVING Street of the Golden Lantern/Camino Del Avion (4:54 p.m.) A man driving a black pickup truck with equipment in the back, made a right on a red light and nearly hit the caller who was in the crosswalk. The driver then got out of the truck and started an argument with the caller. The caller said he believed the driver was drunk.

DISTURBANCE Dana Point Harbor Drive, 24500 Block (8:37 a.m.) A caller reported a man with a 6-inch knife was in the women’s restroom and refused to leave. The man, who appeared to be a transient, did not threaten anyone with the knife but showed it to other employees.

A man called police saying he believed his friend, a 21-year-old man, was being held against his will. The man said he was supposed to meet his friend, who lives with “Sugar Daddy,” but the friend never showed up. The caller was evasive and hung up on the dispatcher.

Tuesday, October 6 COURT ORDER VIOLATION Camino del Avion/Niguel Road (10:22 p.m.) A caller had a restraining order against a woman who was sitting at the bar arguing with the caller. A 46-year-old unemployed woman was arrested and taken to Central Women’s Jail. She posted bond and was released the next day.

PETTY THEFT Doheny Park Road, 34000 Block (9:24 p.m.) An employee at Smart and Final was following a man who concealed alcohol in his jacket and was walking outside through the parking lot. The loss was a bottle of Captain Morgan. A 47-year-old man was arrested and remains in custody, with bail set at $25,500.

WELFARE CHECK Pacific Coast Highway/Dana Point Harbor Drive (2:46 p.m.) A man’s leg was seen “hanging out of the bushes” near the street. The caller did not know if the subject needed help.

Fatal Hit-and-Run Suspect Pleads Not Guilty Following a collision last Friday that killed 23-year-old Cesar Andres Medina of San Juan Capistrano, Andrew Christopher Michaels, 19, of Laguna Niguel, was charged Tuesday with one count of felony hit and run with permanent injury or death, according to Orange County District Attorney officials.

Michaels pleaded not guilty at his Tuesday arraignment at the Central Jail in Santa Ana, according to OCDA Spokesperson Roxi Fyad. His pretrial hearing is set for 8:30 a.m. Oct. 15 in Department H1 at the Harbor Justice Center in Newport Beach.

If convicted, Michaels faces a maximum sentence of four years in state prison.

WELFARE CHECK Crown Valley Parkway/Pacific Coast Highway (5:35 p.m.) A caller alerted police to a 63-year-old woman with long blonde hair who was acting depressed and saying she was going to walk into the ocean.

The woman was talking to the caller about the stress of having to move out of her residence and having to bury her exhusband two days prior. The caller said the woman walked down to the beach and had been drinking alcohol.

SUSPICIOUS PERSON-CIRCUMSTANCE Pacific Coast Highway/Doheny Park Road (4:46 p.m.) A man with long blonde hair wearing a white t-shit was seen screaming and punching the air walking on the bike path toward San Juan Capistrano.

Upon arrival, deputies located a Dodge Ram truck, the vehicle believed to have struck Medina, parked in the driveway. A short time later, Michaels contacted deputies at the station and, following an interview with investigators, he was arrested at approximately 9:30 p.m. Saturday. His truck was towed and is being processed for evidence.

On Saturday, Oct. 3, Medina’s family and friends gathered at a memorial created at the corner of Del Obispo Street and Paseo Carolina. Toward the midnight hour, several friends remained at the site of the crash, including Lilia Gutierrez, a former classmate.

“It’s still not hitting me. It’s still so unreal,” Gutierrez said, her face illuminated by dozens of candles lining the sidewalk.

“There are no words to describe this.”

October is for the Arts Del Prado Art Walk, Oct. 17, a highlight of Arts and Humanities Month

T

his October marks the 30th anniversary of National Arts and Humanities Month and the city of Dana Point plans to join other cities across the country by observing that milestone in a big way.

Many different events are planned to recognize the importance of music, art and culture in our city and may be found online at www.danapoint.org.

One of the most exciting events will be the Del Prado Art Walk from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17. The newlycompleted Del Prado Avenue streetscape, medians and landscaping will offer an extraordinary setting in the heart of our town for the display of visual art created by many of our local artists as well as live music performances.

The city of Dana Point has made tremendous strides in its development and support of music, art and culture in the past four years and residents can be proud of that achievement. In 2011, the City Council formed the Arts and Culture Commission, a five-member appointed board whose mission is to imbed arts and culture in the city’s policymaking, legislation, infrastructure and operations.

Like other cities with prominent cultural programs, the council recognized that the arts could greatly improve residents’ quality of life while building a solid foundation for economic development. I would like to briefly recap just a few of the city’s major accomplishments in this area: In the winter of 2012, the Dana Point Symphony kicked off its inaugural season at St. Edward’s Church and now, approaching the start of its fifth season, continues to draw even larger and more dedicated audiences. In an era where many urban symphony orchestras struggle to survive, the Dana Point Symphony continues to play to packed houses bringing world-class classical music to Dana Point and surrounding communities in an accessible manner. In its short four-year existence the orchestra has entertained over 25,000 patrons, performing with, among other notable artists, the world-renowned Christ Church Cathedral Choir of Oxford, England, the U.S. Naval Academy Women’s Glee Club and violinist Elizabeth Pitcairn, current owner of the Red Mendelssohn Stradivari violin that inspired the movie “The Red Violin.” The Symphony even performed an entire concert aboard the Brig Pilgrim in the harbor.

– Welcome to America! stomp ashore in Dana Point for a 10-week run in our harbor, resort hotels, parks and other publicly accessible facilities throughout the city. With material funding from the Scott Schoeffel city’s Tourism Business Improvement District, this was the first time the international Elephant Parade— considered one of the largest outdoor public art exhibitions in the world—was staged in the United States. The precious pachyderms drew thousands of adoring and doting visitors during their stay, which culminated in an unforgettable closing weekend in Lantern Bay Park where the community was able to bid farewell to their new friends before they moved on to their next parade in another city. Fortunately a few of the elephants stayed behind in permanent locations to remind us of that remarkable time.

Our summer concert series continues to set the bar very high for other cities.

Each Sunday afternoon for eight or nine weeks in the summer, thousands flock to our three largest parks to enjoy a variety of first-rate tribute acts ranging from Led Zeppelin to Frankie Valli. Led by the city’s dedicated Community and Recreation Services department, the concert series, now over 25 years old, continues to explode both in terms of quality and attendance. It is not surprising that the summer concert series is one of the most popular events on the city’s busy calendar.

H

alloween season this year starts off not with a horror film from Hollywood but a sci-fi journey called The Martian, adapted from Andy Weir’s popular book by the same name. After one of the most underwhelming Septembers in recent movie history, October brings the return of the ever-inconsistent Ridley Scott. His last hit film was 2007’s American Gangster and his last sci-fi feature was the disappointing Prometheus (2012). With The Martian, we see a reminder of a great blockbuster maker.

While exploring planet Mars, a space crew quickly moves back into space when an intense storm hits. Only fellow astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is left behind—mistaken as dead—when he’s knocked unconscious by debris. When he awakens he’s left with his tiny camp, limited supplies and food as well as a web camera. Soon NASA and Watney’s team discover his whereabouts and scurry to rescue him.

Jessica Chastain, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Kristen Wiig and Jeff Daniels co-star as Watney’s colleagues. What’s remarkable about The Martian is how rapid, yet smooth, the film’s pace is. There’s no horror like Scott’s classic Alien (1979) or mystique like his Blade Runner (1982), but there are sarcastic jabs that don’t get too obnoxious and dozens of characters that work well together with a ton of chemistry. Damon and cast are stellar and keep the film grounded and not too cluttered. Not only is Scott in top form again aesthetically and narratively, but Watney’s odyssey has one of the catchiest soundtracks ever featured in a space flick. DP www.danapointtimes.com

A widower emailed: “My question has to do with female chemistry. My wife passed away suddenly two years ago. I was married for 50 years to the love of my life. I am 72. I met a lovely lady on Match.com and have been seeing her for four months. We both work so it is usually on the weekends when we get together. She was widowed six years ago after a 37-year marriage to the love of her life. She is 65.

“We have an incredible number of things in common,” he continued. “I am the first man she has dated and she is

the second woman I have dated. She is terrific. We talk a lot about our spouses, which seems to be the best ‘counseling’ for both of us. We said from the beginning that we would be open and honest with each other.

“We are in no hurry to have sex but both seem to enjoy being together, holding hands and cuddling very affectionately. Without knowing all of the relationship details, it’s difficult to pinpoint the problem. Here are 10 items for him to consider: 1. Chemistry by any name—female chemistry, real chemistry or just chemistry—is an attraction for another person.

It’s an essential ingredient to romantic relationships.

2. There is no magic wand that you can wave; it’s either present or not.

3. At least she is being honest with you. You are the first man she has dated and perhaps she is simply proceeding cautiously. If that spark isn’t there for her, at least you know it now. Is your personal hygiene in order?

4. I have had women tell me that when they first dated a man that there was no chemistry. And then after a period of time, chemistry suddenly developed. There might be hope.

5. I assure you, there is chemistry in our later years!

6. A man of 72 is fortunate; there are approximately five single women to each single man your age. You have a strong chance of meeting a fine woman who would be attracted to you. Continue to see her but date around a bit; maybe check

out Match.com again.

7. I think you are making yourself too available. Back off some.

8. I would hate to see you wait around for her, only to find that she will never change and then have your heart broken again. It’s been four months already.

9. For a relationship to work, each person needs to make the other person a top priority, and that includes from the chemistry standpoint as well.

10. Are you being assertive enough with her? Does she think you aren’t being manly enough?

Tritons Tennis Earns Historic Win Over Rival Dolphins On Oct. 1, the San Clemente girls tennis team accomplished something that no Triton team had done in program history.

San Clemente traveled to Dana Hills and defeated the Dolphins on their home court in a league match.

San Clemente and Dana Hills split the South Coast League championship last season. The Tritons have claimed the title before but have never won a match on the road against Dana Hills, according to Tritons head coach John Stephens.

San Clemente’s 12-6 victory over Dana Hills put them at 4-0 in the league standings with one more round of league play to come.

The Tritons got a huge boost from the back end of their doubles pairs to defeat the Dolphins. San Clemente held a 7-5 set advantage heading into the third and final round and won five of six sets to seal the win. The late push by the Tritons included key doubles wins by Jasmine Safavieh and Taylor Bonghi and Stephi Neilson and Brooklyn Hulse.

San Clemente’s Lindsay Hung and Sami Nielson earned crucial first and second set wins, respectively, over Courtney Swift, the Dolphins top singles player.

Dana Hills (4-3, 3-1 league) bounced back with a 16-2 South Coast League victory over Tesoro on Oct. 6. The Dolphins were set to play a league match against Capistrano Valley on Oct. 8. Results were not available at press time.

The Dana Hills girls volleyball team started South Coast League play off strong, winning their first two matches over Tesoro and Capistrano Valley on Oct. 1 and Oct. 6, respectively.

Against Capistrano Valley, the Dolphins (3-8, 2-0) were led by senior outside hitter Ayla Fresenius’ 20 kills.

Dana Hills will compete in the California Challenge tournament in San Diego Oct. 9-10 before returning to league play next week.

The Dolphins next league match will be a big one, as they travel to play rival San Clemente, the reigning league champion, on Oct. 13.

Dolphins Water Polo Riding Hot Streak The Dana Hills boys water polo team has scored 42 goals over the stretch of their last four games, earning wins in all four matches. After topping Bishop’s 10-4 on Sept. 26, the Dolphins rattled off wins over Huntington Beach, El Toro and, most recently, Tesoro.

The Dolphins notched their second consecutive South Coast League win on Oct. 6 after defeating Tesoro 13-4. Jack McLaughlin and Bennett Williams each scored four goals against the Titans and goalie Riley Zachary recorded 13 saves.

The Dolphins have outscored their last four opponents 42-23.

The team was set to host Laguna Beach, the No. 3 team in the CIF-SS Division 3 rankings, on Oct. 8. Results were not available at press time.

The Dolphins (11-3, 2-0) made a sizeable jump up the CIF-SS Division 2 rankings this week following a 12-10 victory over league rival El Toro, who is ranked fourth in the division.

Landgraf Paces Field at Dana Hills Invitational Sophomore Jack Landgraf broke through for a big individual win at the Dana Hills Nike Invitational on Sept. 26, posting a meet-winning score of 14:28.

Landgraf’s time was the fastest posting by a sophomore in the meet’s history.

Landgraf’s strong showing helped the Dolphins boys cross country team claim the first-place team title at their own invitational. Senior Mason Coppi finished third and senior Jake Ogden took 23rd.

The Dana Hills girls team took fourth overall at the event. Senior Camille Perkins finished eighth, posting a time of 17:41 and senior Sienna Serrao took 25th (18:18).

The boys team continued to show their formidable depth at the South Coast League preview meet at Irvine Regional Park on Oct. 6. Coppi won the race with a time of 15:22.4, narrowly edging out Landgraf’s second-place time of 15:22.5.

The Dolphins packed seven of their runners inside the top-12 to edge all other league competition in dual-meet scoring.

Ogden, Brandon Hough, Colin Stein, John Turner, Max Groff and Thomas Wilfert finished fourth, sixth, eighth, 10th and 12th, respectively.

The girls team also fared well at the preview meet and were again led by Per-

kins, who placed third in a time of 18:20.8.

Freshman Lauren Soto took seventh and Serrao took 11th.

The Dolphins teams will compete at the Clovis Invitational in Fresno Oct. 10.

Golf Team Evens the Score With Tritons After dropping the first of two meetings to South Coast League rival San Clemente on Sept. 23, the Dana Hills girls golf team responded with a victory over the Tritons one day later. On Sept. 24, the Dolphins bested the Tritons 226-230 at Bella Collina Golf Club to split the season series.

Dana Hills (11-1, 4-1) went on to defeat Aliso Niguel in back to back matches on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1. The Dolphins won the first match 221-227 and secured the second match with a 215-220 victory at El Niguel Country Club. Dolphins’ junior Joan Soewondo led the field at El Niguel with a 36 (E). Dana Hills also defeated San Juan Hills in league play 210-219 on Oct. 7.

Emily Lichty earned match medal honors with a score of 35 (-1) at El Niguel.

Football Enters League Play Despite taking a fourth-quarter lead against Cypress on Oct. 2, the Dana Hills football team could not hold on for the win, ultimately losing on a late touchdown run that sealed a 29-26 victory for Cypress.

The 26 points scored by the Dolphins (0-6) was the most they have tallied all season.

Dana Hills will open South Coast League play on the road against Mission Viejo on Oct. 9. The Diablos (6-0) are the No. 1 ranked team in the CIF-SS West Valley Division and will enter the game rested following a bye last week. www.danapointtimes.com

Tri-city area surfers are making the most out of this year’s early, and very busy, contest season

ith two under-18 events and the 28th Annual Southern California Japanese Surf Contest in San Clemente surfing fans had plenty of action to watch and plenty of locals to cheer on last weekend.

Small 1- to 3-foot surf at Church Beach Saturday set the stage for the younger three of five divisions to strut their stuff at Surfing America Prime event No. 2.

Originally scheduled as a two-area event, the weakening swell failed to deliver waves sufficient for two separate competition zones, prompting event organizers to postpone the Boys U18 and Girls U18 divisions to Prime event No. 3 in December at Salt Creek.

The three younger divisions, Boys U14, Boys U16 and Girls U16 delivered plenty of high performance surfing as the small surf was surprisingly rippable and got better throughout the afternoon.

San Clemente-based surfers claimed five of the 12 possible finalist spots.

respectively, Pinkerton surfing well all day despite having lost a patch of skin to the rocks in a pre-contest practice session.

Kade Matson and Taj Lindblad battled in Boys U14. With Lindblad in the lead throughout the heat, Matson pulled ahead with a last-minute buzzer beater for the win, 12.40 to 11.64. Matson also earned the runner-up spot in Boys U16.

The event is held on day one of a twoday permit at Church Beach shared by the annual Southern California Japanese Surf Contest. Kei Kobayashi pulled out all the stops, using his home field advantage to take the pro division win at the 28th annual event on Sunday in what he called “super fun” waves.

Another 28th annual event, the San Clemente Seafest, was happening this weekend, one of its highlights being the

traditional grom and family surf contest at the pier. Local winners at Seafest included Brayden Burch, Nathan Carabba, Hagan Johnson, Nathan Stacy, Pinkerton and Matson.

Seafest Surf Contest organizer Jim Wynne echoed Kobayashi’s impression of the waves, although the morning conditions made contest officials and competitors a bit nervous.

The day started out windy, making the surf look “about as terrible as it gets,” Wynne said. “The wind ended up laying down to a whisper and the surf got really fun. Everyone seemed to have a really good time and there was a great vibe to the contest. The event ended up being a huge success. We sold out all but six spots prior to contest day and had waiting lists for just about every division.” DP

KADE MATSON ade Matson, 13, of San Clemente, had a winning weekend, Oct. 3 and 4, making three podium appearances at two events.

At Surfing America Prime event No. 2 on Saturday, Oct. 3 at Church Beach, surfing up a division in Boys U16, he claimed the runner-up spot behind Tyler Gunter of Newport Beach. Both surfers’ first waves were nearly matched, Gunter with a 7.17 and Kade with a 7.10. In the end Kade’s back-up wave came in just 1.48 points short of what he needed for the win.

In Boys U14, Kade was chasing fellow San Clementean, Taj Lindblad, for most of the heat, and with grit and determination he managed to turn in a 7.27 score in the heat’s final moments for the win.

Then on Sunday, Kade took top honors at the Seafest Surf Contest at the San Clemente Pier in the Boys 15U division.

Kade’s talent in the lineup is really matching up with the time and effort he has been

putting into his surfing, making him one of the tri-city’s best shining young surf stars to be.
