Mysterious Light in Nov. 7 Night Sky a Navy Missile Test Fire THE LATEST: In response to numerous sightings of a bright light with a blue/ green tail seen streaking across the sky above Orange County just after sunset on Nov. 7, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department reported shortly before 7 p.m. that the mysterious light was due to a Naval test fire.

The tower at John Wayne Airport confirmed the sight—that left a blue glowing cloud in its wake and baffled witnesses, thinking it could be anything from an incoming bomb to a meteor or even otherworldly visitors—was the Navy’s doing.

According to a Nov. 9 press release by the U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) public affairs office, Saturday’s test fire of an unarmed Trident II D5 missile was performed in order to “obtain valid reliability, accuracy and performance factors for use by the Joint Chiefs of Staff and USSTRATCOM.” The missile test was launched in the Pacific Test Range off the Southern California coast from the USS Kentucky, an Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine, or SSBN. The launch was monitored by Admiral Cecil D. Haney, USSTRATCOM commander, who in the press release referred to such tests as necessary to show round-the-clock readiness of U.S. deterrence forces.

“A credible, effective nuclear deterrent is essential to our national security and the security of U.S. allies and friends,” Adm. Haney said. “Strategic weapons tests demonstrate the readiness of our nation’s nuclear triad and serve to assure our allies and deter our potential adversaries.”

The launch was the Navy’s Strategic Systems Program’s 156th successful test flight of its kind since 1989.

Also on board the submarine to observe the test were, from Indiana, Sen. Joe Donnelly, Rep. Pete Visclosky, Rep. Jackie Walorski and Rep. Larry Bucshon, along with Rep. Stephen Womack of Arkansas and Senate and House subcommittee staff members.

Another successful test flight was launched on Nov. 9. Haney and the congressional delegation were not on board for that launch.

Halloween Hit-and-Run Driver Turns Himself In THE LATEST: The man who hit a pedestrian in the Rite Aid/Ralphs parking lot at Golden Lantern and Del Prado on Oct. 31, turned himself in on Wednesday, according to Dana Point Chief of Police Lt. Russ Chilton.

Shortly after 5 p.m. on Halloween, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department began receiving calls reporting a man walking in the parking lot had been hit and knocked to the ground by a man driving a dark-colored Mercedes SUV who then sped away.

Several witness attended to the victim—who walked away from the incident with only scrapes and bruises—witness Neil Donovan of Dana Point snapped clear photos of the suspect and one couple even chased the man in their car, only to lose him near Pacific Coast Highway and Selva Road.

No further information about the suspect was available at press time.

WHAT’S NEXT: The investigation is ongoing and charges have yet to be filed.

THE LATEST: The grand opening of the Outlets at San Clemente will feature a weekend of events.

The first is a private ribbon cutting on Thursday, Nov. 12, and shops will have special offers starting that day open to the public, according to Outlets representatives.

The inaugural Tree Lighting Concert on Saturday, Nov. 14 will feature the band American Authors, known for their Billboard Top 40 song “Best Day of My Life;” 2015 American Idol winner Nick Fradiani; and up-and-coming singer from the first season of The X-Factor, John Lindahl.

The concert is free to the public and will be hosted by Valentine of 104.3 FM’s morning show.

The Christmas tree is from Mt. Shasta and is decorated with 3,000 lights and holiday décor.

The opening will feature fast-casual eateries and more than 35 retail stores such as Bass Factory Outlet, Calvin Klein, Chico’s Outlet, Cole Haan, Columbia Sportswear Company, Converse, GUESS Factory Store, H&M, Levi’s Outlet Store, Nike Factory Store, The PUMA Outlet Store, Tilly’s, Tommy Hilfiger, Under Armour, Vans and White House Black Market.

THE LATEST: On Nov. 3, a lawsuit was filed by Michael Aguirre and Citizens Oversight Inc. against the decision made by the California Coastal Commission that permitted San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station stakeholders to store spent nuclear fuel at the now-offline nuclear power plant.

The lawsuit argues proper channels of examination were not followed and storing the fuel would be detrimental to human safety.

The lawsuit asks the Superior Court of San Diego County to nullify the decision made by the commission.

Coastal Commission Responds to City’s Dana Strand Gates CDP, City Council Meets in Closed Session to Discuss THE LATEST: Following Dana Point City Council’s unanimous Nov. 3 vote to approve a Coastal Development Permit that would keep gates at two of the five accessways to Strand Beach leading through the Headlands at Strand development and continue limiting hours of access—with a revision of the current schedule—the California Coastal Commission has given the city’s plan the thumbs down.

The council’s approval of the CDP affirmed their belief that the change of access hours at the mid-Strand and centralStrand accessways amounted to a goodfaith compromise that adequately balances public access and the interests of Headlands residents and aligns with precedent set by the Ackerberg case, a CDP the commission recently approved in Malibu.

EYE ON DP (Cont. from page 3) Coastal Program manager, responded to the city’s public notice of the Nov. 3 scheduled hearing, stating that although the commission staff had not initially received a staff report describing the specifics of the proposal, from the notice’s description of a change in hours of operation at the gated accessways, they opposed, as the existing gates are “unpermitted ... not consistent with the city’s Local Coastal Plan ... and the policies of Chapter 3 of the Coastal Act.” Schwing also wrote that the Ackerberg/ Malibu case cannot legally be applied, as that case “was imposed as a requirement across one single family residential lot and located immediately adjacent to another residence, whereas the Headlands accessways were approved and planned without gates as part of a large residential subdivision” and the city’s LCP and HDCP prohibit the gates.

Schwing also said that the Coastal Act “requires maximum access to be provided consistent with public safety needs and the need to protect public rights, rights of private property owners and natural resource areas from overuse,” adding that should the need for operating hours be evidentially substantiated, they could be established through the CDP process, but the proposed hours, he said, are too restrictive.

Mayor Carlos Olvera signed a letter addressed to Coastal Commission Executive Director Charles Lester, informing him of the council’s decision to move forward with a CDP “similar, if not identical” to the recent Malibu CDP. The letter also said when the commission originally approved the LCP and HDCP in 2004, the plan called for the city to determine hours of operation on the area’s public trails and also included a depiction of gates in the plan diagrams.

Correspondence from Lester to the city, also dated Nov. 3, stated that although the Coastal Commission shares the city’s desire to work cooperatively to reach a resolution of the matter, the commission had issued a cease and desist order for the removal of the gates and restricted hours and set a Nov. 18 compliance deadline, after which the commission will begin assessing penalties of up to “$11,250, for each violation, for each day the violation has persisted or is persisting, for up to five

to include the drama and dance departments—thespians to read and perform fellow students’ poetry and dancers to interpret it.

Interest among teachers, Rhibar-Kelly said, was so enthusiastic, they thought; why not find a way to bring in the science and math departments as well.

“Everybody’s heard of STEM as an educational focus, but art is the way to open minds,” Elia said. “It is our responsibility as adults to mentor the next generation and I think the festival gives us a good platform to do that, across all academic subjects. And the festival will now have a whole lineup of student-created entertainment stemming, or should I say ‘STEAMing’ from the original logo program.”

Pilgrim—designed to inspire the teens to create artwork for display at the festival’s Art in the Park art show and sale. Two years ago, students from the school’s foods classes got involved in the annual clam chowder cook-off before switching last year to baking cookies for the event.

This year’s logo winner and four runners-up have been chosen, the annual field trip—hosting 220 kids and eight teachers—is set for Jan. 8 and the student involvement opportunities have grown from inclusion of only visual arts and foods students to participation across all other departments. Along with the longtime participation of the marching band in the festival parade, an estimated 15 percent of the school’s student body will be involved in the event.

he upcoming 45th annual Dana Point Festival of Whales, set for March 5, 6, 12 and 13, 2016, has again looked to the city’s youth to be valuable contributors of inspiration, engagement and entertainment, fulfilling an integral part of the event’s mission—to educate and involve the entire community and appreciate and showcase the talent of Dana Point’s next generation of leaders.

Since 2011, when festival coordinator Penny Elia first approached Dana Hills High School digital photography and ceramics teacher Natalie Hribar-Kelly with the idea of tapping into the school’s body of talented visual arts students with a logo design contest for the 2012 event, the two have been sharing ideas and expanding student involvement every year.

“I feel like we planted a seed and like anything you try to nurture and grow, it takes some time,” Elia said. “The program has now grown from reaching out to recruit teachers and students to participate, to the point where they are coming to us asking to participate.”

The steady increase in interest by both students and teachers at Dana Hills began its upward trajectory almost immediately that first year. By the time the first logo design winner was chosen, the program had already expanded to include a field trip for 90 students—whale watching aboard a Dana Wharf vessel, followed by a tour of the Ocean Institute’s historic brig

PICKING UP STEAM The 2016 Festival of Whales/Dana Hills High School collaboration now welcomes students from the school’s English, science, math, theater and dance departments, along with visual arts students working in digital photography, multimedia design, ceramics, drawing and painting, as well as the marching band.

With the educational system increasingly focused on “STEM” curriculum— the integration of science, technology, engineering and mathematics in learning—over the past few decades, art has often been overlooked and under-offered in America’s schools. Dana Hills is an exception, with its on-site arts magnet school—the South Orange County School of the Arts, or SOCSA. So when the festival first began working with DHHS, the arts-focused partnership was a perfect fit. But just as STEM leaves out art, it became increasingly apparent that the program was under-utilizing its opportunities to connect with students on STEM subjects.

Elia and Rhibar-Kelly began brainstorming ideas for expanding the program to benefit more of the school’s student body, deciding to offer opportunities for students from every department—to put the ‘A’ for art, back in STEM and make it “STEAM.” They began with inviting the English department to add poetry to the festival’s Art in the Park event. That idea grew

This year’s winner is sophomore Camden Butterworth, whose logo design will become the official brand of the event, emblazoned on everything from printed advertising, event programs and online media to souvenir logo wear in the form of sweatshirts and T-shirts.

Butterworth, who created the logo in Krista Snow’s multi-media and design class and intends to continue studying photography after graduation, said she wanted to take her entry in a totally different direction than the last few year’s designs.

“I wanted to go for a cartoonish look with smooth lines and lettering—a simple design that would be fun and different to look at,” Butterworth said. “I’ve gone to the festival with my family growing up and last year some of my art was on display, but to be this year’s logo designer is a huge honor. To have my logo be among all the famous artists who have done it in the past, as well as the student designs, is amazing.”

Snow was also excited to have one of her students chosen as this year’s winner.

“I remember Camden working on it last year and I was very impressed,” Snow said. “It was very creative and she was thinking outside the box by incorporating

text. She worked very hard on it and I’m thrilled for her.”

The other four finalists are: in second place Anthony Aguilar, a 2015 grad now attending college in San Francisco as an art major, sophomore Agustina Cruz in third place, junior Chloe Gaynor in fourth and, in fifth place, junior Fatemah Khanmohammadi.

The winners receive prizes including whale watching tickets from Dana Wharf Whale Watching and cash—$200 for the winner, $100 for second place, $75 for third, $50 for fourth and $25 for fifth—and their designs will appear at Art in the Park and in the Festival of Whales official event guide.

Gaynor also said the announcement that her design was chosen among the top five was a welcome surprise.

“I was pretty shocked when I was chosen as a finalist,” Gaynor said. “I think it’s awesome that the festival allows kids to be included in such a high-profile way. I’ve grown up here, going to the festival every year, and to now be a part of it is awesome.”

She went on to say that although she doesn’t intend to study art in college, the logo design contest aligns with her intended major—marketing and advertising—and a fun way to get involved in her community.

“A lot of teens sort of stray away from having a sense of community and a program like this, giving us a chance for our art to represent such a big event, is amazing,” Gaynor said.

Rhibar-Kelly agreed, adding that high school students’ disconnect with their community often happens because teens are often dismissed, either due to a belief that younger kids are easier to deal with and tend to be more enthusiastic participants in community events, or the fact that athletics often take center stage in high school.

“The idea that this community cares enough to provide a program especially for teens to highlight their talents, shows we think their interests and talents are valued and important,” she said. “What’s really exciting about this year’s expansion is that we’ve created this really well-rounded program that reaches all kinds of kids, with varied interests, and gives them new opportunities to interact with each other and the community in a very meaningful way.” DP

Years ago South Orange County fought hard and long to keep El Toro from turning into a commercial airport, primarily to keep noise levels down and preserve the quality of life in South Orange County. In the past few months, I have noticed the loud noises of commercial aircraft flying over my house.

The morning of Nov. 4, for example, shortly after 7 a.m., there were a number of aircraft flying over my home, one after the other, as the early morning flights departed John Wayne Airport. Also very late at night I hear commercial aircraft flying over after 11 p.m. and even after midnight.

Most local citizens probably did not catch the article in the OC Register in July which stated the FAA was switching to “satellite controls” to better move more aircraft through our airspace. Although whatever changes they are making is not supposed to take effect until January of next year, this recent uptick of noisy airplanes over our peaceful community has me wondering if they may be “testing” their new paths now.

According to the newspaper article, this will mean 50 departures a day from John Wayne Airport, 37 arrivals and 22 approaches.

Due to our location, I believe we are feeling the impact of departures as arrivals come in from the inland versus ocean direction.

If you have noticed or been impacted by commercial aircraft noise lately or have concerns about 50 aircraft flying over your home every day, please contact the FAA at 202.267.3521 or email 9-awa-noiseombudsman@faa.gov.

Our community banded together to prevent this years ago and it sounds like it is time to gather together again and let the FAA know it is not OK to use Dana Point/ San Clemente as their departure flight path.

SAVE DANA POINT FROM WHAT? JAY VAN VELZY, Dana Point

In a response to a recent letter to the editor (November 6-12, 2015, “Town Center Initiative Succeeds”), Betty Hill from Capo Beach thanks “thousands” of residents of Dana Point for qualifying the 2015 Town Center Initiative for a special election.

Mrs. Hill suggests that the “initiative” contains the entire “Town Center Plan” which was approved by the city of Dana Point and the California Coastal Commission.

Furthermore she suggests that her “initiative” supports the same goal, “to create a business district in a village atmosphere with shops, offices, restaurants and parking needs for its success.”

This week I was able to drive up Pacific Coast Highway and then down Del Prado and, thanks to the recently improved elements of the Town Center Plan, I was able to drive up Del Prado and down Pacific Coast Highway, through the area that has been labeled “Town Center” and now the “Lantern District.” In driving this so called “Town Center” I noticed: 13 vacant lots, 17 empty buildings, seven massage parlors, and four drug and alcohol treatment centers. Looking for the area envisioned by the 2008 project, I noticed very few pedestrians walking the area—except for the many drug treatment patients who were walking up and down the area with their counselors. So far the village atmosphere envisioned by the Town Center Plan is far from materializing.

Coastal Commission adopted the “Town Center Plan.”

Betty Hill, I don’t understand what you’re trying to save.

You state that your goals are the same as the Town Center Plan. You also state that the Initiative will close developer loopholes and strengthen protections for Dana Point Residents Thus far, no developer has been successful in undoing these “loopholes” to create new projects in the area, as no new developments have moved in. We do not understand what “loopholes” you are referring to; please be more specific?

It appears there is a plan in place, which was put in motion many years ago. The city has spent taxpayer revenue in hope in seeing a return on investment in new residential and commercial enterprises.

Where are those enterprises taking advantage of all those loopholes? Now that the infrastructure is in place, why now does your “initiative” question the plan that was put in to motion in 2008, after years of public discourse and evolution? And please explain how your “initiative” is going to now protect the residents of Dana Point.

Betty Hill, please answer: How is your plan different from the current “plan?”

What “loopholes” are you attempting to close? Why are you wasting taxpayer dollars for a special election for a plan that has already been publicly approved and vested by the Coastal Commission?

Seems like a NIMBY argument for someone who hasn’t truly gown up in this town and isn’t truly invested in this community.

Please respond to us, CAVLEBLTR, or Citizens Against Vacant Lots, Empty Buildings and Lost Tax Revenue.

ome of Matthew Nelson’s most vivid, and happy, memories revolve around Christmas time.

Nelson, the son of rock legend Ricky Nelson and grandson of Oswald Nelson, star of the historic “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet” television show, can recall how he and his twin brother, Gunnar, would travel to their grandparents’ home in Hollywood for the holidays—when fame and everything that goes with it took a backseat in favor of family time.

As the glam-rock band Nelson, Matthew and Gunnar made their own mark on the music industry, earning hits with songs like “(Can’t Live Without Your) Love and Affection.” But throughout their storied career, which spans over 25 years and counting, Matthew knew the duo had to try their hand at making a Christmas album.

In 2015, the Nelson brothers wrapped up a long and intricate studio process and are anticipating the release of their new Christmas album This Christmas. Matthew and Gunnar will kick off their holidaythemed tour, Christmas with the Nelsons, at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano on Nov. 20.

Matthew Nelson believes the brothers have found their true voice in the form of the duo standing alongside one another, playing their guitars. It has made for what Matthew believes to be the best work the brothers have produced in the past 10 years.

“As a songwriter, it’s probably the most challenging thing you can imagine, to write a new Christmas song that sounds fresh but is still classic,” Matthew Nelson said. “I think this is kind of a spin on it that you haven’t heard before and I’m excited about it.”

San Clemente Couple Cares Deeply About the Ocean

Y

ou wouldn’t expect two people who grew up in Chicago and now live in San Clemente would have such a deep passion for the ocean and its marine life that would inspire them to start a company to protect it. But that is what David and Pamela Jackson, in their mid-50s, did.

Even though they are both from Chicago, they didn’t meet there. They met and married 17 years ago in Southern California. Their new San Clemente-based company is called EverythingOceans. David is the CEO and Pamela is the education director.

The company’s purpose is to help the oceans.

Their first product, to be published Nov. 20, is an illustrated children’s ON LIFE AND LOVE AFTER 50 book titled, Ocean AdBy Tom Blake ventures with Jax, which will be the first of a series. Pamela is the book’s author and Bonnie Bright is the illustrator. The book is written for children pre-kindergarten through second grade.

Jax, is a smiling, powder-blue, bottlenose dolphin readers will fall in love with.

I sure did.

Why the interest in oceans? Pamela grew up frequenting the John G. Shedd Aquarium in Chicago where she became fascinated with marine life. She later moved to California and graduated from Saddleback College in the aquarium and aquaculture science degree program.

She volunteers at aquariums where she teaches people about the ocean and its inhabitants.

“I want to use my knowledge of the ocean’s animals to help children learn more about marine life through funengaging ocean adventures,” Pamela said.

“If I can help children fall in love with the oceans and the animals that live there, they may grow up wanting to save them.

I would like to help cultivate the next generation of ocean stewards through my stories.”

Pamela’s husband David shares her enthusiasm. He said, “It is difficult for people to understand the oceans because they cannot see what is going on underneath the waves. Pamela’s book is written from Jax the dolphin’s point-of-view. Jax describes in the first person what he sees and feels in the ocean. There is a warm, touching story to Jax’s adventure when

children’s books that youngsters will not forget while growing up.

Pamela said, “I want children to swim through my books.”

Ocean Adventures with Jax will be released on Amazon.com on Nov. 20.

The Dolphins (22-6), the Division’s No. 2 ranked team, are poised to make a deep playoff run. Dana Hills reached the tournament’s semifinals in 2014.

Dana Hills took part in a final nonleague tune-up match against Agoura on Nov. 7 and came away with a 9-5 victory. Agoura ended the season as the No. 8-ranked team in Division 1.

If the Dolphins defeat Redondo Union, they will play the winner of Los Osos/Villa Park in the second round on Nov. 14.

Dolphins Football Honors Military Veterans The Dana Hills High School football program hosted its fourth annual Honor the Valor benefit game at Dolphin Stadium on Nov. 6. The football program hosted 70 combat veterans, who took part in a pregame meal and postgame ceremony.

All proceeds raised at the game will be donated to local military veteran organizations such as the Dana Point 5th Marine Regiment Support Group and the Dana point Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9934.

In the three years prior to the 2015 event, the Honor the Valor benefit game has raised over $75,000.

The highlight of the evening came after the game, which visiting El Toro won 63-0, when the Dolphin football players handed their game-worn camouflage jerseys over to the veterans in attendance. Each Dolphin player had the name of a veteran displayed on their jersey.

The Dana Point 5th Marine Regiment conducted static displays throughout the stadium and there was a flyover during the National Anthem. Several active-duty and military veterans were honorary captains and participated in the pre-game coin flip.

Marymount Defeats Dolphins Volleyball in First Round of CIF-SS Playing as the No. 3 representative out of the South Coast League, the Dana Hills girls volleyball team lost its opening round to Marymount on Nov. 10.

Marymount, the No. 1 team out of the Mission League, defeated the Dolphin in three sets, 25-12, 25-13, 25-12.

Dana Hills finished the year with a 9-20 overall record, including a 4-4 mark in league play.

Peninsula traveled to the Dolphins home court and came away with a 15-3 victory. Peninsula will play the winner of Harvard-Westlake/Corona Del Mar in the finals on Nov. 13. Results were not available at press time.

The Dolphins game wins against Peninsula came in the doubles format, where the tandem of Ayla Fresenius and Claire Swift won once and Tatum Phillips and Dana Mackensen won twice.

The run to the semifinals was a marked improvement over last year’s effort, when the Dolphins advanced to the second round.

Dana Hills, which split the South Coast League title with San Clemente this season, paved their way to the tournament’s penultimate match by defeating Fountain Valley, Marlborough and University, respectively.

Dolphin Cross Country Teams Prepare for CIF Competition The Dana Hills boys and girls cross country teams appear to be peaking at the right time as they head into the CIF-SS Prelims at Mt. SAC on Nov. 14.

The Dolphins boys and girls teams were recently crowned South Coast League champions at the final league meet of the season at Irvine Regional Park.

The Dolphins boys cross country team placed second at last year’s CIF-SS Finals.

If the Dolphin teams advance past prelims, they will compete in the CIF-SS Finals at Mt. SAC on Nov. 21.

Rachael Tilly wins WSL North America Women’s Longboard Championships, qualifies for Worlds

F

or Rachael Tilly, 17, of Capistrano Beach, the pressure was on, going into the World Surf League North America Women’s Longboard Championships, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 7 and 8, in Huntington Beach, the only WSL World Longboard Championship qualifying event of the year.

But the pressure, she said, was only to make it to the semifinal round, a performance that would seal her qualification into the upcoming WSL World Longboard Championships in China, Dec. 5 through 12.

She not only qualified but ended up winning the event to become the 2015 WSL Women’s North American Longboard champion, her second U.S. pro title, having also won it in 2013.

“My main goal throughout the event was just to make it to the semis and qualify for China,” Tilly said. “After that, I was really relaxed and surfing looser, and that made the difference. Winning was just the cherry on top.”

The first day of the event was a round robin, with eight out of 16 women moving on to day two on Sunday. Tilly was the top surfer, advancing on as the No. 1 seed—a real confidence booster, she said.

On Sunday, Tilly was in second place throughout much of the 30-minute final, against fellow Dana Point pro Lindsay Steinriede.

I never stopped searching,” she said.

Tilly finally found the ride she needed to take the lead with about two minutes left in the heat.

“I was thinking, ‘oh my gosh, this could be it’ and then right in front of me Lindsay took off on a wave and I thought ‘oh no, she could take it,’ because she was really ripping,” Tilly said. “Unfortunately for her it didn’t work out but at that moment I knew I had it and was really happy. I got off my board and went underwater for a few seconds and tried to soak it all in.”

Going into the event, four other U.S. women in the contest were already qualified for the World Championships—Jen Smith, Kaitlin Maguire, Tory Gilkerson and Steinriede—but having only made it into round two in China last year, Tilly needed to pull out all the stops in Huntington to requalify.

Tilly was also cut in round two in China in 2013. And with no qualifying contests being held in the U.S. in 2014, qualified again last year when the WSL used ratings from 2013 to determine who would represent the U.S. in 2014.

2015 will mark Tilly’s third appearance at the WSL World Longboard Championships in China.

harlie Stevens, 8, of San Clemente said he was a reluctant surfer at first but in the four years he’s been doing it, has grown to love it so much he is working toward having a professional surfing career someday.

“I never really wanted to get on a surfboard at first but my dad put me on a board and I started to surf and now I love it,” he said.

“When you fall it’s just like splashing into a pool and you get to do fun turns and be in the water with your friends all day. It’s great.”

San Clemente Sea Fest Surf Contest at the Pier and at the Stoke-o-Rama—his third year competing at that event—at T Street in the 8U push-in divisions. He also surfs in the

event qualified only two men and one woman. The men’s event was won by Taylor Jensen of Oceanside. San Juan Capistrano-based surfer Kevin Skvarna finished in second place, and along with Jensen, qualified for China.

Tilly said she is really looking forward to her third trip to China and feels like her surfing has improved since last year.

“I’m feeling a lot of great momentum with this win and my surfing lately has been the best it’s ever been so I’m feeling really good going into the event,” she said.

“The competition side of my surfing has matured a lot since then as well, along with my wave selection and patience. It’s a huge step from amateur to pro because the bar is set so much higher.”

Tilly attributes her recent progress to increasing her competition time in the water, returning to the Western Surfing Association Championship Tour and competing for the San Clemente High School surf team at least once a week.

“More contest surfing has helped season the competitive side of my surfing and prepared me for these bigger events,” Tilly said. “It’s one thing to just time yourself in a free surf and another to test yourself under pressure in a contest. With the entire qualifying season being only one event,

Charlie attributes his progression and success in the sport to the coaching and support he gets from his family, including his dad, mom and aunt, as well as his own enthusiasm to practice nearly every day.

Lately Charlie said he has been putting extra effort into working on turns off of the closeout and airs.

“I want to thank my parents for getting me everything I need for surfing, pushing me in, showing me where I should be out in the lineup and taking me to the beach,” he said. “And my mom signs me up for all my contests and feeds me breakfast, lunch

“When I’m just free surfing with my friends I may not catch a lot of waves but in a contest there’s just four or six people out and you only get a certain amount of time so it pushes me to get as many good ones as I can, as fast as I can,” Charlie said, adding that he is really concentrating on what he’s doing during his heats. “I’m pretty much thinking, ‘there’s a wave coming and I’m going to go up and come back down and do a big carve or something like that.’ But it’s still really fun because there’s still a bunch of friends around and being competitive makes all of us better.”—Andrea Swayne www.danapointtimes.com
