Five things Dana Point should know this week City Council Votes to Ban Marijuana Businesses THE LATEST: The Dana Point City Council voted unanimously on Monday to adopt an ordinance explicitly banning the sale of marijuana by dispensaries along with its cultivation in and delivery to the city.

The special meeting was set in response to the state’s new law, The Medical Marijuana Regulation and Safety Act, set to take effect on Jan. 1, 2016, establishing a combined state and local licensing system for commercial marijuana businesses.

According to City Attorney Patrick Munoz, the special meeting was necessary in order to allow time for the required second reading and vote by City Council, 30 days after the first reading, to officially adopt the ban before the state’s March 1, 2016 deadline.

Because commercial medicinal marijuana business are not expressly permitted by the city’s zoning laws, the practice is considered banned in Dana Point but cities wishing to enact specific bans on the cultivation and delivery of cannabis are required to adopt specific ordinances to do so. This ordinance, Munoz said, bans all commercial marijuana activities.

WHAT’S NEXT: The law will not prohibit qualified medicinal marijuana patients in Dana Point from filling their prescriptions at legally operating dispensaries outside of the city but they may neither grow nor receive cannabis via delivery service.— Andrea Swayne

CUSD Schools Remain Open, Vigilant, in Light of LAUSD Threat Closure THE LATEST: While schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District were closed Tuesday due to what authorities deemed a credible threat of terrorist attacks, Capistrano Unified School District schools remained open. The threat was deemed a hoax, later the same day.

Parents of students attending CUSD schools received an email from Superintendent Kirsten Vital Tuesday afternoon that read, in part, as follows: “ … CUSD has been in communication with the Orange County Sheriff’s Dana Point Times December 18-31, 2015

Department Juvenile Services Bureau and the Orange County Intelligence Assessment Center (OCIAC), and we have been advised that there has been no credible threat against CUSD at this time...

“CUSD has a safety plan that is specific to each site and is reviewed every year and we have worked to build and strengthen this plan since 2012. We have a unique relationship with law enforcement that includes daily interaction and communication.

“The District also works with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department in planning and security assessments of our schools and with the OCIAC … integrated, multi-disciplined, information and intelligence sharing network...”

The email also assured parents the district’s ongoing training for staff is consistently reviewed and modified as necessary.

WHAT’S NEXT: According to OCSD Lt. Jeff Hallock, the sheriff’s department took no specific action related to the LAUSD incident.

“We constantly make school safety a priority and monitor for anything unusual or suspicious,” Hallock said.—AS

Groups Protest Bids for Private Operator at OC Sailing & Events Center THE LATEST: A collection of nonprofit operators and citizens protested Thursday at the OC Sailing & Events Center in Dana Point Harbor against Orange County’s solicitation for a private operator to run the facility.

People at the protest said if a private operator takes over, they fear rents will be raised making it unaffordable for the nonprofits to continue to operate at the center, effectively phasing them out.

Raising public awareness to keep the OC Sailing & Event Center areas affordable and as available for public access as possible was the main theme of the protest.

Diane Wenzel, the executive director of Westwind Sailing, said her organization serves about 10,000 to 15,000 people a year who attend programs, such as sailing, adaptive boating, corporate events and more.

“The programs that we all provide are low-cost or no-cost,” Wenzel said. “We don’t generate major income for the Harbor. If a private company takes over, they’re going to have financial obligations to take care of the center that has been largely ignored for a long time and need a lot of work. In the interest of them turning a profit and being able to pay a rent that is going to satisfy the OC Dana Point Harbor, they’re going to have to (raise rates) to be able to make that happen.”

According to the county’s request for proposal, the operator would be responsible for maintenance; however, the proposal also requires the operator to provide programs and events similar to the groups’ that protested and for those programs to be available to the public.

WHAT’S NEXT: The bidding for the RFP ends at 4 p.m. on Jan. 22. The question and answer end date is at 4 p.m. on Dec. 28.

The groups opposing the RFP have started a petition, “Save the OC Sailing and Events Center,” on www.change.org that had more than 3,300 supporters as of Thursday afternoon.—Eric Heinz

SC Hospital Legislation to be Heard in January THE LATEST: Key figures in the effort to keep a functioning hospital, or at least an

emergency room, in San Clemente met Dec. 9 to update the public on the progress of keeping the city’s only hospital and Dana Point’s nearest hospital, Saddleback Memorial Medical Center, operational.

Dozens of people attended the meeting at the San Clemente Community Center.

Since fall of 2014, when the prospect of Saddleback Memorial Medical Center’s emergency room closure came to light, community organization Save San Clemente Hospital, state legislators and area cities’ City Council members have rallied to keep the hospital open.

If nothing else, groups like Save San Clemente Hospital want a freestanding emergency room to remain, but freestanding emergency rooms are currently not allowed under California state law.

Sen. Patricia Bates said the bills authored by herself and Assemblyman Bill Brough have drawn “strong opposition” from nurses unions and the American College of Emergency Physicians.

Currently, the city of San Clemente is in the process of possibly rezoning the area on which the hospital sits for medical use or hospitals only. This would require Saddleback Memorial to have some kind of medical operation on the land.

WHAT’S NEXT: Brough said there are a few ideas to present to the Legislature when it reconvenes Jan. 4. He said the two bills he and Bates authored, A.B. 911 and S.B. 787, will be heard by a legislative committee on Jan. 12 and 13. The bills would essentially allow for a freestanding emergency room or satellite emergency room in San Clemente. —Eric Heinz

Grand Jury Applications Due Jan. 22 THE LATEST: The final date to apply to the 2016 California Grand Jury is Jan. 22.

The term for serving on the grand jury is one year and is a full-time position.

The term begins July 1. The Grand Jury normally works a five-day week and jurors must be flexible and able to serve some evening and weekend hours in addition to normal business hours. Compensation for service is currently $50 per day plus mileage.

WHAT’S NEXT: According to the Grand Jury website, www.ocgrandjury.org, up to 80 percent of its role is investigating local government and civil procedures.

In business for 22 years, Gems N’ Loans stores have primarily been located in San Diego County and Temecula. The stores carry items from high-quality estate jewelry, diamonds, Rolex watches and coins to vintage and new musical instruments.

Staff members are accredited jewelry professionals, knowledgeable in the sale and purchase of fine jewels, gold and silver.

“Because the word pawn shop in some people’s mind is negative, my goal when starting this business was to prove otherwise by offering nice merchandise, excellent service and great prices. Hembree, who had a career as a real estate broker before starting Gems N’ Loans, said one of the biggest contributing factors to his company’s success is his employees.

“I spend a lot of time recruiting and screening to find the right people,” Hembree said. “I search for employees who fit well within our company culture, which is built around the type of people who enjoy building relationships with customers,

“I have some very loyal employees who have worked for me for a long time doing a very good job but don’t have any retirement plan,” Hembree said. “And because Social Security doesn’t pay much, I wanted them to have a solid financial future. It’s an exit strategry for myself as well because I’m looking at retiring within the next three to five years. The employ-

ees will buy me out and they will have a retirement program they didn’t have to put any money into, just their work, with no out-of-pocket expense.”

The ESOP has turned out to be an excellent employee retention and recruiting tool, Hembree added.

“I highly recommend the ESOP to other small businesses,” he said. “It’s working really well for us. If any other small biz owners in the area would like to talk about it, I’d be happy to share information with them. It’s a win-win for the employer and employee.”

The store’s loan program is offered as a confidential service and is in the process of adding an exclusive separate entrance, reserved parking and high security for loan customers.

“I opened in Dana Point because I fell in love with the location but also because I want to continue to grow the business, to increase share value so the employees will have something to look forward to,” he said. “We operate as a high-end pawn broker and know that even in a community such as this—largely middle class and upper middle class—many people experience a cash crunch and not everyone has credit acceptable to banks. The salon is owned by Harbor House Café owner Naomi Yang but operated exclusively by Scudder, a transplant from New Zealand who came to the United States nine years ago.

Growing up in Laguna Beach, owner Kelly Stevens loved the water at a young age. She was 3 years old when she started surfing and fell in love with being out on the ocean.

In 2000, Stevens, mother to six children, found outrigging after searching for a new outlet for her love of the ocean and a way to balance her passion with caring for her family.

Still the only outrigger shop in Southern California, Keli’s has become a fixture in Dana Point.

Stevens is delighted to have been able to share the fun of paddle sports with so many families over the years, not only via sales and rentals, but also through lessons and coaching.

Because fostering a sense of community and growing paddle sports is a main focus of Keli’s, Stevens supports many local charities and volunteers for anything related to outrigging and paddle sports.

At past Battle of the Paddle events, Keli’s sponsored and coordinated all of the kids’ races. Keli’s has also been involved in helping many nonprofits: Dana Outrigger, Stand up for the Cure, and Wounded Warrior Stand-up Paddleboarding, to name a few.

A welcome home vic{ IN DANA P O I NT } tory party in honor of Capistrano Beach resident and professional longboard surfer Rachael Tilly was held Wednesday night at the Hobie Surf Shop in San Clemente. Tilly became the youngest ever to become the WSL (ASP) Women’s World Longboard Champion on Dec. 8 in China.

Tilly is a longtime member of the Hobie surf team as well as the San Clemente High School surf team where she is a senior.

I have a lot of regulars. I get people from 6 months old to 95 … all different walks, races, religions, countries … 90 percent of my business is very serious (not just tourists seeking a novel experience.)

How do strangers react when you tell them what you do for a living, for instance at a grocery store?

It depends. If they’re close-minded … they (might say) ‘Ew! Why?’ Some people are open-minded and interested.

What is your busiest time of year?

It’s 24/7.

The caller saw the subject kick the elderly woman under the table and another witness saw the subject punching her. The alleged abuser was described as a portly woman in her 40s with brown hair. The victim was described as a woman in her 60s who used a walker.

CRUELTY TO ANIMALS Stonehill Drive/Del Obispo Street (3:20 p.m.) A man, described as being in his 40s and having thick gray hair, was seen “smashing a golf club” at his dog. The dog was hiding in the bushes to the right of the parking lot at Creekside Park near the chain-link fence, south of Stonehill by San Juan Creek Trail.

DISTURBANCE Del Obispo Street/Pacific Coast Highway (11:26 a.m.) Two men and one woman, described as transients, were in a physical fight. One of the men was seen swinging a skateboard. A 34-year-old man who said he works in recycling was arrested and bail was set at $50,000.

FOLLOW-UP REPORT La Plaza/Street of the Golden Lantern (10:32 a.m.) A 28-year-old unemployed man was arrested under suspicion of having been the perpetrator of an attempted robbery the previous night. The suspect was described as being 5 feet 11 inches tall with brown hair and blue eyes. He is being held at Central Men’s Jail on $1,500 bail.

Saturday, December 12 DISTURBANCE El Camino Capistrano, 24700 Block (4:19 p.m.) A man in his 50s was being loud and refusing to leave. The caller told deputies the man had taken her grandmother’s black Mercedes without permission and wanted them to sign over the title. The vehicle had been towed earlier that morning from the 100 block of Calle Negocio in San Clemente.

ASSAULT Pointe Sutton, 32700 Block (1:01 p.m.)

A woman said her drunken neighbor attacked her while she was talking to new neighbors. The woman said the attacker “body slammed” her, grabbed her by the head and yelled in her ear.

Jail for possession of narcotics and drug paraphernalia. She was released on Dec. 14 with credit for time served.

DISTURBANCE Selva Road, 34100 Block (4:46 p.m.) A man was heard yelling, “I’m going to send you to the hospital.”

SUSPICIOUS PERSON IN VEHICLE Domingo Avenue, 25900 Block (2:23 p.m.)

A man was seen repeatedly parking his gold Toyota van, getting out and walking around, and then getting back into the van, changing his clothes and then walking around again. The man was described as being 40 to 50 years old and typically wearing a hat and glasses. The caller said the man covers his face whenever police or fire authorities drive past.

SUSPICOUS PERSON/CIRCUMSTANCES Crown Valley Parkway/Sea Island Drive (8:54 a.m.) A man wearing a long, mustard-colored jacket and jeans was seen walking in traffic lanes “loaded.”

RECKLESS DRIVING Ritz Cove Drive, 0 Block (12:31 p.m.) A patrol check was requested for six to seven Audis and Lamborghinis with “Targa Trophy” decals driving toward the RitzCarlton. Some of the vehicles had GoPro cameras attached to them.

SUSPICOUS PERSON/CIRCUMSTANCES Wightman Court, 0 Block (7:09 p.m.) A woman reported finding her neighbor’s white Lexus SUV in the middle of the street with the lights on, keys in the ignition and a wine bottle on the floor. No one was answering the door at the neighbor’s residence and there was also an Uber driver looking for the 65-year-old man.

A woman reported her vehicle had been broken into “within the last 30 minutes.”

CITIZEN ASSIST Via Monarca, 0 Block (2:03 p.m.) A man received a scam phone call from someone regarding a computer virus. The scammer threatened to murder him, he said.

My Aunt Margaret She was the Happiest Person I Ever Knew; Her Secret was Like a Christmas Carol

oesn’t everyone have a favorite relative? Mine was my Auntie Margaret.

She was one of those special souls who made people feel like they should always be giving each other presents. Every morning felt like Christmas at Margaret’s home.

My aunt could make a card game seem like a visit to Vegas and a simple trip to the grocery store like a shopping spree on the Champs-Élysées. With my aunt behind the wheel, riding in her Chevrolet Impala felt like riding an African Impala.

Margaret never had a big house, expensive furniture, a VIP job or a fancy car.

But her house had welcoming warmth; she always left the back porch light on and the key under the mat. I remember every piece of furniture she owned—her armchair and sofa became a symbol of comfort and calm and contentment for more than 50 years. Her delight in even the smallest things made them seem priceless. I learned to treasure her possessions too. They had meaning; they were a reflection of her. Margaret wasn’t looking for things to make her happy; she was already happy looking at all the things she had.

Is it just me? Or does the transient situation in Dana Point seem to be getting out of control?

I do not feel safe in my own town anymore. There are transients everywhere! I can’t walk or bike to the Harbor, go to the grocery store or even put gas in my car without someone begging for money or making me feel uncomfortable in general.

Dana Point is a tourist destination and known for being a beautiful and safe location, but this is quickly changing.

There are transients on nearly every busy street corner and they are creeping their way into our neighborhoods as well, which threatens our safety. They are often mentally imbalanced or under the influence of alcohol or other substances, and are often unruly and rude.

What can be done to clean this up?

In short, Margaret showed us that choosing to be happy is not only an option, but also the secret to a wonderful life. She was my favorite aunt (maybe my favorite person) not because of how much she had but because of how much she gave.

Margaret had a career, too, and in business she led by example. Everyone who ever worked with her (or for her) did better work, had more fun, created greater customer satisfaction and built stronger companies than any other job they ever had.

My aunt had no more opportunities or lucky breaks than the next person. And

she certainly had her share of adversity and heartbreak. Yet I never heard a complaint or an unkind word from her—no matter what her own hardship. She never went on holiday to St. Tropez, shopped on Rodeo Drive or dined at Wolfgang Puck’s. But she lived as if she had. Margaret thought of her life as a great and beautiful adventure. And so it was: she somehow understood that a happy life was not about enduring hardships but overcoming them.

In the end, her life was like Dickens’ A Christmas Carol: it taught my family what happiness means, what real success is and what love can do. She was living proof that given a glass half empty or half full, choosing the half-full glass always makes the drink taste better. Merry Christmas!

I

f there is one actor who seems to have been fated with misfortune throughout 2015, it would have to be Thor star Chris Hemsworth, beginning the year with the quickly forgotten Blackhat and then followed up with the disaster reboot Vacation. Even Avengers: Age of Ultron received mixed reactions. Now Hemsworth’s second collaboration with Ron Howard, In the Heart of the Sea, is being ignored by movie fans—most likely due to Star Wars frenzy.

Does it deserve the failure as much as the earlier flops? Sort of.

In 1820 New England, avid boatman Owen Chase (Hemsworth) leaves pregnant wife Peggy (Charlotte Riley) for an assignment as first mate of the new whaling ship the Essex. Though he was promised to be the captain, Owen is passed over for George Pollard (Benjamin Walker) due to nepotism. Owen and George don’t see eye-to-eye on the voyage, but Owen befriends teen sailor Thomas Nickerson (Tom Holland) while one big, mean whale wreaks havoc on the ship.

Ben Whishaw co-stars as Moby Dick author Herman Melville being told the story by a grown-up Nickerson (Brendan Gleeson). One big problem with Howard’s Heart of the Sea is that despite the impression elicited by movie trailers, audiences don’t see nearly enough of the whale.

Another is that the characters’ interaction and development seem to be treated as an afterthought— especially evident among supporting roles.

The special effects are visually pleasing, but not enough to make up for the lacking structure. Hemsworth plays a decent lead and his performance is entertaining, but this just isn’t his year. In the Heart of the Sea offers an entertaining 122 minutes, just not the meaty story moviegoers have come to expect from Ron Howard. DP

The Cousin Experience

T

hey’re on every young child’s holiday wish list. Our house certainly doesn’t need more of them. Toys are quickly forgotten, broken, outgrown or sucked up by the vacuum. Instead of giving in to their trendy toy desires, our extended family has created the “Cousin Experience.”

There are eight young cousins in our family. They range in age from 5 to 13 years old. Every year we parents would frantically communicate with each other about our children’s top toy picks. Kids’ lists would include a wide variety of materialistic junk. We’d stress over ideas, race to stores, wrap the gifts and then haul the whole mess over to the celebration.

Family Christmas gatherings would

yield a towering mountain of plastic packaging and heaps of shredded wrapping paper. Was there a way to improve upon the cousin Christmas? There had to be. We put our heads together and hatched a plan. I’m no Grinch, but limiting the amount of stuff our kids received sounded like a worthy idea.

Yoga among the trees brings us back to our roots

W

It’s fun rehashing those pirate memories.

This year we’re planning a day trip on the train. We haven’t quite decided where our final destination lies. Maybe we’ll journey to San Diego for the day or possibly up to the City of Angels. It doesn’t matter where we go. It matters that we’ll all be together—one big, loud, laughing bunch of cousins hanging out.

It’s not always easy to carve out quality cousin time. With everyone’s hectic schedules and busy lives, it gets tough to coordinate. We make the time though. The Cousin Experience allows us to bypass plastic stuff and have fun while creating crazy, happy memories together instead.

Spending time in the opulence of nature can be a salve for healing, connecting and transforming the mind and body. The simple act of getting away and allowing for a bit of quietness in nature can open your senses to an entirely different symphony that often plays in the background of our busy lives.

The natural system of healing, called Ayurveda, dates back more than 5,000

picked names from a hat and got a present for that person. In the early days, that route was easier than embarking on an experience. A few years ago we switched it up. What a great decision that was. We’ve never looked back.

Vivid memories of our day at the CHILL event at the Queen Mary in Long Beach last year are alive and well at family gatherings.

Ice skating with eight wobbly skaters rendered many screeches and plenty of hearty laughter. We narrowly avoided disaster when my daughter carelessly formed an arabesque on ice and nearly beheaded a nearby skater. Flying down the indoor ice hill on a sled, frigid wind blowing through their hair, beside cousins is priceless.

Soaring through the air on swings from Neverland Ranch together 20 times in a row is a memory they’re sure to savor for years.

One year we experienced an interactive pirate dinner theatre show together.

Although the meal was barely fit for humans, the cousins bonded over watching skilled dancers fling themselves around on a giant pirate ship. They even braved the stage together at the show’s finale.

Winter Reads: Sleuthing in Montana

I

t’s wintertime, Christmas is just around the corner and the season always calls to mind images of snowcapped mountains. Recently this got me thinking about Montana and sharing a collection of stories by Robert Sims Reid, about two Montana sleuths whose adventures make for some engaging entertainment over the holidays.

You’ve never heard of Reid? Neither had I until a friend on Goodreads.com recommended him. A former Montana police officer, Reid has written four first-rate crime and mystery stories. It’s a pity he’s no longer adding to the collection, as he now READING WITH WRIGHT lives in France and writes

The library recently purchased newly printed copies for our collection, thanks to the generosity of the Friends of the Library. After reading the first one, I quickly devoured all of them. Here’s a rundown of the titles: Big Sky Blues (1988) is not a mystery, but a police crime story that sounds all too real. It is like Joseph Wambaugh meets Thomas McGuane, in that it has a very pensive, solemn, serious and literary feel to it. This novel is a very intimate look into the life of law enforcement partners and the effect that relationship has on marriages. Reid effectively captures the action and the monotony of life in a small, “boring” town in the American West. Ray Bartell, a detective, is the protagonist and is featured later in Reid’s Wild Animals as well.

The Red Corvette (1992) is the tale of retired Montana cop Leo Banks, who goes back “home” to Illinois at the behest of a former girlfriend to solve the murder of her husband. The couple had visited Banks several months previously. The husband and Banks had been the woman’s suitors back in the day. tion—which revolves not only around the murder of the husband, a small town doctor, but also a more than 50-year-old crime the doctor was investigating—with a slew of emotions. The outsider, Banks, arrives in the small Illinois town in the summer. It’s hotter than hell and it seems even the weather wants him gone. The interactions between the retired cop and the residents captivate. Although not much is happening, Reid’s storytelling—with a cast of eccentric small-town characters including the sheriff, his Barney Fife-like deputy, the town drunk, the local DA and an almost feudal lord type who owns all the farmland—makes The Red Corvette a real page-turner.

Benediction (1992) is another fine noirish police procedural featuring Detective Leo Banks. Leo takes a 9-1-1 call from a distraught woman and ends up with more than he bargained for as he gets involved with some rich, powerful men with whom he has had disagreements in the past.

Banks also walks the line between personal and professional involvement with a victim who might not just be a victim.

Benediction is a short and suspenseful read with a surprise ending.

Wild Animals (1995) gets into the head, heart and soul of a cop—and why not, as the author is a detective. Set in Montana, the story combines normal police work with eco-terrorism and political intrigue.

Detective Ray Bartell is one of those guys who perhaps is stuck in his job because he’s too competent and not a sycophant.

Boat Parade Out of this World Boaters decorate vessels to fit “A Galactic Holiday” theme, will sail again this weekend

T

he Dana Point Boat Parade of Lights kicked off weekend one Dec. 12 and 13 as boats decorated to fit with this year’s theme, “A Galactic Holiday,” circled the Dana Point Harbor, vying for prizes in the 41st annual, four-night event.

Dozens of boaters fully embraced the theme, featuring Star Wars costumes, characters and music, alongside the requisite twinkling lights by the thousands.

The Boat Parade of Lights will finish its 2015 run on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 18 and 19. Viewing is free from anywhere along the water’s edge in the Harbor.

Veteran Dolphins Closing the Door on Opposition As the clock dwindled into stoppage time during a tight nonleague game against Edison on Dec. 16, Dana Hills senior midfielder Spencer Madden knew his team would come through. The Dolphins had dominated possession for much of the second half, but gave up a goal on a long Edison shot from outside the box that tied things up 1-1 in the 57th minute. In extra time, the Dolphins flipped the proverbial switch, a move that has become a trademark of their young season.

Dana Hills scored on a nifty last-minute goal by Dustin Lopez, which sealed a 2-1 victory over Edison and ran the Dolphins win streak to four games.

The winning play was ignited by midfielder Dante Romero, who pushed the ball downfield and into open space, finding a wide open Evan Bicknell. Bicknell and Lopez played a speedy give-and-go, and the senior striker found the net just before the clock expired.

Dana Hills (4-1-1) has been excelling

in the second half of games this season, outscoring Edison, Anaheim, San Clemente and Laguna Beach by a combined 5-2 margin in the final 40 minutes. However, the Dolphins have found the back of the net only once during the first half of those four games.

“It just takes us a little while to get going but we’re getting wins,” Madden said.

“We know in the second half we’re going to dominate the other team like always.”

Against Edison, Madden put the Dolphins out in front on a headed goal in the 37th minute.

Dana Hills is off to its best start in two years, and Madden, along with head coach Leo Compean, accredit the hot start to the team’s cohesiveness. The Dolphins field 12 seniors this season and many of them are three- or four-year varsity starters.

During Dana Hills’ decisive goal against the Chargers, the ball never left the foot of a senior player.

“I have a lot of confidence in these boys.

This is the most fun I’ve had in years coaching,” Compean said. “It’s (their) attitude and comraderie and support for each other; it’s unreal.”

Dana Hills lost to Division 1 powerhouse San Clemente 2-1 in the season opener on Dec. 2. The Dolphins gave up two early goals, including a penalty, but rallied late to outshoot the Tritons and notch a goal in the second half.

Following a tie with Laguna Beach on Dec. 4, the Dolphins offense caught fire in a 6-0 win over Army-Navy on Dec. 8.

Back-to-back wins over previously ranked Anaheim and San Juan Hills followed.

could feel the momentum building.

After playing three games in three days last week, the Dolphins will not take the field again until Jan. 8, when they open Sea View League play against Aliso Niguel.

Girls Hoops Wins Seven in a Row On Dec. 15, the Dana Hills girls basketball team defeated Irvine on the road 60-35, marking the Dolphins seventh straight victory. Dana Hills (8-2) is off to its best start in three years and has not lost since Dec. 2.

During the win streak, the Dolphins have set new season-highs for points scored (66) and points allowed (18). Both marks came in a 66-18 win over Rancho Alamitos on Dec. 10.

Dana Hills will play against El Modena at Mission Viejo High School on Dec.19.

The Dana Hills boys basketball team rattled off three consecutive wins from Dec. 10-14 that brought their overall record to 3-5. After suffering four straight losses to start the season, Dana Hills defeated Westview, Laguna Hills and Morningside, respectively.

The win against Westview capped off the team’s run through the Costal Tip-Off Tournament and the win over Morningside came in the Titan Pride Classic.

Dana Hills will travel to El Toro High School for a game against Westminster on Dec. 21.

Girls Soccer Readies for Tough Slate The Dana Hills girls soccer team was scheduled to play El Toro, the No. 10 ranked team in CIF-SS Division 1 on Dec. 17. Results were not available at press time.

Dana Hills will follow that match with a road game against Tesoro on Dec. 22. The Titans are ranked sixth in Division 1.

Dana Hills (2-1-3) competed in the Aliso Cup Tournament from Dec. 10-12. The Dolphins notched a 2-1 win over Woodrow Wilson, lost 3-1 to Chino Hills and tied 1-1 with Los Alamitos during the tournament run.

Baba’s Eight Goals Leads Water Polo Past Cougars Dana Hills’ Sydney Baba scored a gamehigh eight goals and Alex Peros chipped in five as the Dolphins girls water polo team narrowly edged Rancho Cucamonga 19-17 in a nonleague match on Dec. 12.

Baba has been on a goal scoring tear to start the season. Baba’s 35 goals are currently the sixth highest mark in Orange County. Baba is averaging five goals per game, the third-best average in the county among players with at least seven starts.

She also has 12 assists.

The win over Rancho Cucamonga halted a three-game losing skid for the Dolphins.

Dana Hills lost to El Toro, Mission Viejo and Bishop’s, respectively, before its win over the Cougars.

urfing America Prime hosted a marathon event at Salt Creek Beach in Dana Point last weekend, Dec. 12 and 13, and neither waves nor surfers disappointed.

Running two areas can often be problematic, as having two distinct competition zones with consistently contestable waves is more of an anomaly than a guarantee.

But much to the delight of event organizers and competitors, the combination of swell and surfing prowess combined to provide an action-packed, fun and challenging event.

Saturday’s swell and weather brought large waves in the 6- to 8-foot range, and occasional sets rising to about 10 feet, giving surfers plenty of opportunity to turn in high-level performances with ample lefts off of the point and long, barreling rights out front.

Event, No. 3 of the regular Prime season began on Dec. 12 alongside makeup heats for the Boys U18 and Girls U18 divisions postponed in October at Event No. 2 at Church Beach.

Kei Kobayashi of San Clemente came in third in the Boys U18 and in Girls U18, Bethany Zelasko of Dana Point was runner-up behind Tiare Thompson (La Jolla) and San Clemente surfers Samantha Sibley and Kirra Pinkerton took third and fourth, respectively.

Following the conclusion of the makeup event, surfers’ scores were added to the competitors’ records and heat draws were determined for Event No. 3, U18 competition on Sunday.

The swell subsided and cleaned up a bit overnight but continued to deliver excellent conditions for day two.

When all was said and done, local surf-

ers claimed eight more trophies, winning in three of five divisions.

Kobayashi earned his second trophy of the event, with a third-place finish in Boys U18. Malia Osterkamp (San Clemente) won in Girls U18 and Pinkerton came in fourth. Crosby Colapinto (San Clemente) took top honors in Boys U16.

Zelasko claimed the third-place spot in Girls U16, followed by Alexxa Elseewi (San Clemente) in fourth. San Clemente surfers Kade Matson and Nicholas Coli took the No. 1 and No. 2 spot in Boys U14, respectively.

With such talent-stacked heats in both divisions, the competitors, finalists or not, delivered ride after ride of inspired, brave and skilled surfing.

Although San Clementeans Samantha Sibley and Kirra Pinkerton ended their U16 campaigns in the semifinals, both surfed up in the U18 division makeup heats for the postponed Church Beach event in October and made that final, taking third and

fourth place, respectively. Pinkerton also moved through the regular event preliminary rounds in the huge Saturday surf to take fourth place on Sunday, Dec. 13. While surfing up in U18, this dynamic duo also received the two highest average wave scores of the event among the girls: 9.50 for Pinkerton and 8.17 for Sibley.
