County to Host Public Meeting on Harbor Revitalization March 31 THE LATEST: As Orange County moves forward in selecting a contractor to revitalize the Dana Point Harbor, public informational meetings will be held to explain the process of obtaining the revitalization lease, county officials said in a March 18 community notice.

The first meeting to brief the public on the Request for Qualifications process for the revitalization of Dana Point Harbor is set for March 31. The meeting will address the Request for Qualifications process and the role of the developer of the P3.

On March 16, the county issued the formal request for real estate development companies to file statements of qualifications for a “Private-Public Partnership,” or P3. Under a master ground lease, the revitalization of the Harbor will include designing, constructing, renovating and operating “certain improvements” within the Harbor, according to the notice.

WHAT’S NEXT: The meeting will take place at 6 p.m. March 31, at the OC Sailing & Events Center, 34451 Ensenada Place, at the Dana Point Harbor.

Capo Unified Reaches Tentative Contract with Educators THE LATEST: The Capistrano Unified School District announced in a press release this week that the district reached a tentative agreement with the Capistrano Unified Education Association on March 22 in an effort to provide students and employees “stability over the next two to three years as California faces economic uncertainty.” The announcement comes after almost seven months of negotiations over educators’ contracts.

that the tentative agreement, which is for the 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 school years, “increases salary schedules by 4 percent effective July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2017.” The tentative agreement also includes a 4 percent one-time payment to be made during the 2015-2016 school year.

Officials said in the release that since 2013 the district has been reinvesting in classrooms, campuses and facilities, including “replenishing reserves to provide safeguards against future (economic) downturns,” hiring additional staff, implementing “a comprehensive workorder system to build efficiency in district operations” and “investing more than $90 million into facilities around the district for upgrades, refurbishments and expansion.”

Per the tentative agreement with CUEA, officials said “students and families will benefit from greater accountability through teacher evaluations tied to student performance and progress.” Teachers will also be required to utilize the district’s Learning Management System for all communications with students, parents and guardians regarding any educational issues, which officials said will facilitate more transparency and consistent communication.

The district will also be able to “add college and career counselors with differentiated hours to support students after the regular school day has ended—as late as 9 p.m.” Officials said this change will ensure every student “has an implementable plan for college, military and professional careers when they graduate.”

The final objective listed in the contract is to recruit and retain teachers in light of the eminent teacher shortage” throughout California.

WHAT’S NEXT: CUEA’s voting on the tentative contract will take place at school sites on March 29 and 30. Ballots and sign-in sheets are due to CUEA on March 31, and an email regarding the ratification results will be sent on April 1.

CUSD Board Holds First Reading of New Immunization Policy THE LATEST: The Capistrano Unified Board of Trustees participated in a brief yet important discussion Wednesday night as staff presented the first reading of the district’s new immunization requirements for the 2016-2017 school year.

In June, Gov. Jerry Brown signed SB 277 into law, eliminating personal belief exemptions from immunization in schools statewide. In order to comply with the new

law, which goes into effect July 1, staff reported that “the district will no longer be able to enroll students without the required vaccinations, unless the family submits a medical exemption from a licensed physician.”

Only one person—who was in favor of the new policy—spoke on the item during Wednesday’s public comment. In October, a group of CUSD parents addressed the board with their concerns about the new policy and mandated vaccinations.

While the staff report states that there is no financial impact to the district, Trustee Jim Reardon asked if there had been any assessment of the new policy’s impact on enrollment.

“We’ve heard threats of people removing their children from the district,” Reardon said. “A child who leaves the district is a child we will not receive ADA (funding) for.”

Susan Holliday, assistant superintendent of education services, responded that staff is beginning to pull figures regarding enrollment impact, which will be shared in a future update to the board.

Whale Watchers Witness Birth of False Killer Whale off Dana Point Coast THE LATEST: On March 19, whale watchers aboard a Capt. Dave’s Dolphin and Whale Safari catamaran witnessed the

live birth of a baby false killer whale.

According to Captain Tom Southern, the boat was near a pod of about 40 of the whales when one of the animals came up close alongside the boat. The whale pushed up against the vessel and there was a sudden burst of blood in the water as the calf was born.

“The whole group huddled around the calf, and they spent the next 10 to 12 minutes taking turns pushing the calf to the surface while the newborn learned how to swim,” Southern said.

Captain Dave Anderson said his most recent encounter with false killer whales was in March 2014 and that prior to that, they had not been seen in local waters for nearly a decade.

A

heart stops beating. A man falls to the ground. Do you panic, or jump up and help? For one man visiting Dana Point on business recently, this series of events became his reality. And thanks to quick thinking coworkers and hotel employees, the answer to the previous question was met with quick action.

Bill Spear, of Huntington Beach, business unit director for a Parker Hannifin, was serving as emcee at Service Award conference at the Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort & Spa on March 5 when he became the victim of a sudden heart attack.

“I remember feeling a little funny but not anything abnormal, just a bit off,” Spear said. “I had just given a speech on stage and walked out into the crowd to talk to people. I went to turn around to sit down and the next thing I remember is waking up on the ground.”

Spear’s coworkers, including Ray Bumpus, Mark Brown and Amber Gilman, along with Patrick Blair (a coworker’s husband) sprang into action, beginning CPR immediately or rushing out of the ballroom to summon help.

guest with their luggage right outside the ballroom doors and made the first call to alert staff of the emergency. Williams reached fellow loss prevention agent Jessica Heinsius, who upon hearing the emergency was likely a heart attack, ran to get the hotel’s automated external defibrillator, or AED. While waiting for paramedics to arrive, Williams took control of the situation, clearing the ballroom of its more than 150 guests and ensuring all administering aid to Spear had room to work.

Heinsius arrived with the AED to find Spear still unconscious and with no heartbeat. With a calm and assured demeanor, she powered up the machine, administered a shock, and a few seconds later, Spear regained consciousness.

“He kept saying he was fine and wanted to get up,” Heinsius said. “I, and the others, kept insisting he stay put and basically holding him down.”

“I know that when I woke up, my first words were ‘I’m fine,’ but I had no idea what happened,” Spear recalled. “Then the paramedics came and put me on a gurney and took me to Mission Hospital where I had a stent put in.”

Spear, who describes himself as an avid mountain biker and a very healthy person, said he had no signs or symptoms prior to the attack.

“I was totally shocked,” he said. “I am active and in really good shape. I have low blood pressure, low resting heart rate and good ratio of good to bad cholesterol, but I do have a family history of heart conditions. My dad died of a heart attack at 65.

I am 59.”

Heinsius paid a visit to Spear while he was in the hospital to check on him. She said that after getting to know him, she understood his “I’m OK,” response when he first came to in the ballroom.

“He’s the type of guy who was like ‘Alright, I’m back, let’s go,’” she said. “It was great to get to speak with him and meet his wife. I found out he has a daughter Page 4

Sugar doesn’t only affect your waistline-it affects your teeth as well. Sugar left in your mouth from dessert, candy, or other sugary foods, feeds bacteria in your mouth. This bacteria produces acidic substances that eat away at your enamel, cause bad breath, and increase your chances of jaw disease.

The best way to keep sugar from corroding your teeth is to rinse your mouth with water immediately after eating sugary foods.

It’s important to follow this step because it reduces the amount of time sugar has contact with your teeth. The longer sugar interacts with them, the more likely your teeth are to become damaged.

You should also snack sparingly to avoid excess plaque buildup and to lower your risk for cavities. Finally, refrain from sticky gums, toffee, caramels, or any other food that requires intense chewing. These types of food put stress on your teeth and can remove dental sealants.

2. Brush Every Morning and Night

The habit of brushing your teeth is a vital part of dental care. Dentists recommend that people brush at least twice a day (but preferably after every meal), for at least two minutes. For best results, wait a half hour after eating to brush. This time frame allows your enamel re-harden after acids in food have weakened it.

When you eat food, bacteria in plaque combines with your food to create acids.

Acids wear down your teeth and can create cavities in your teeth. So as you brush, you remove plaque from your teeth and gums to protect your teeth.

Follow these steps as you brush: • Brush your teeth without any toothpaste for two minutes. The bristles on your toothbrush clears plaque and bacteria off your teeth. After you dry brush, rinse your mouth with water.

• Put a small dot of toothpaste on your toothbrush head. An excessive amount of toothpaste can actually discolor your teeth.

• Angle your toothbrush to a 45-degree angle and place it against your teeth.

• Brush one tooth at time in a small circular motion. It doesn’t matter where you start. Keep the bristles against the edge of your gum line.

• Use the same motion to brush the top,

inside, and back of your teeth. You want the bristles to clean all your teeth’s surfaces to remove as much plaque as possible.

• Brush your tongue, back to front, to remove bacteria and eliminate bad breath.

• Rinse your mouth with water and spit.

• Don’t forget to replace your toothbrush every three to four months.

Practice these steps daily for effective results. If you need more help with techniques, ask your dentist for a demonstration.

3. Floss Daily

Experts say you should floss your teeth once a day, preferably at night, before you brush your teeth. This method helps remove plaque and major food particles from between your teeth-and especially in areas where your toothbrush can’t reach.

Here’s how to make flossing easy: • Take an 18-inch strip of floss, wrap it around the pointer fingers of both hands, and leave about one inch in between your right and left ends.

• Use the little one-inch section of floss and wedge it between every tooth. Keep the floss against your tooth as you continue to clean between your top, then bottom, teeth.

• Be careful not to push the floss too hard up or down between your teeth, as excessive force could damage your gums.

• After you use up your section of floss, wind up the used portion and continue flossing with another clean section of the floss.

Throw away the floss after you finish.

4. Use Mouthwash

Before you use mouthwash, ask your dentist if antibacterial mouthwash is right for you. These alternatives tend to be stronger than fluoride mouthwashes, but they do a great job of killing bacteria that causes plaque and gum disease. If you prefer to use a traditional fluoride mouthwash, follow the directions on the label. You’ll typically swish one capful of solution in your mouth for around 30 seconds or so.

5. Visit the Dentist Twice a Year

Even with healthy oral hygiene habits, you should visit your dentist every six months.

These checkups help dentists catch any serious dental problems and give your teeth a deep clean. Additionally, dentists will give further cleaning instructions for your teeth.

It was kind of a surreal experience because he told me that I am the reason he is still alive. He said his doctors told him that, in his case, although helpful to his recovery, CPR only would not have brought him back. He was very lucky that it happened in a place that had an AED.” Spear was also pleasantly surprised by Heinsius’ visit to the hospital and described her actions as heroic.

“Meeting her was awesome. We got pictures and I gave her a gift and my sincere thanks,” he said. “I was so happy to be able to tell her in person how much I appreciate what she did. I consider myself to be exceptionally lucky that she, and the others, were there when I needed them.

The doctor said I’m like the guy that walks away from a plane crash carrying his briefcase, without a scratch on him. I suffered no residual effects and no damage. That AED was what saved my life.”

He also praised paramedics for getting him to the hospital so quickly and Dr. Kulick for performing his successful operation.

Spear was released from Mission Hospital on March 9, with full motor and brain function. Due to the quick response to his heart attack, it is estimated that he was only unconscious, for five to six minutes, max.

According to the American Red Cross website, more than 350,000 people a year suffer from cardiac arrest in the United States and AEDs are “the only effective treatment for restoring a regular heart rhythm during sudden cardiac arrest” and “for each minute defibrillation is delayed, the chance of survival is reduced by approximately 10 percent.” The Red Cross also recommends that if at all times Americans were within four minutes of an AED and someone trained to use one, an estimated 50,000 lives per year would be saved in this country.

Heeding this advice, hotel management believes the presence of an AED and staff trained in its use is of utmost importance.

Jeff Kingsbury, director of guest relations at the hotel, said that in order to create a safer environment for guests, as well as employees, the entire loss prevention department is routinely trained to provide first aid/CPR, including the use of AEDs. “We also offer training to all employees who want training,” Kingsbury said, adding that the hotel is in the process of purchasing a second AED machine. “Even though it was our loss prevention department that reacted this time, anybody who wants to be involved here, can be involved.”

On being called a hero, Heinsius said she doesn’t really feel the term fits her actions.

“Yes, I did help and I did save someone, but it’s not like I did something overly impressive,” she said. “I think it’s just something everyone should have the instinct Dana Point Times March 25-31, 2016

to do, to help someone, but I realize not everyone does. Most of my friends and my fiancé are all sheriffs’ deputies, so all of them thought it was cool. Most of them have done things like that, so it wasn’t anything uber extraordinary. But here at the hotel, it was a first. I just did what my instincts told me to do.”

Loss Prevention Manager Colin McGinnis also praised Heinsius’ instincts.

“Jessica (Heinsius) is well-trained but definitely has the gut instinct,” McGinnis said. “Everything she’s done in her two years here has been nothing but gut. She looks at the situation and reacts to the situation, whatever it may be, appropriately and in a calm and assertive manner.

A Dana Point resident since 2000, after graduating from Dana Hills High School in 2008, she worked for the Riverside Sheriff’s Department as a correctional deputy where she first received first aid and CPR training. On staff at the hotel for the past two years, she has also been required to keep these certifications current.

McGinnis added that like Heinsius, Williams’ calm demeanor and instinct also played an integral role in the positive outcome of Spear’s heart attack.

“James (Williams) is a retired U.S. Marine and a pastor,” McGinnis said. “He oversaw what was going on in a very calm and effective manner. I was blown away by how effective our department handled the incident, but not surprised at all. We are one of the smallest staff departments

here, with only eight members. For us to have the people on staff to be able to react the way they did was phenomenal.”

Jim Samuels, Laguna Cliffs Marriott general manager, said the life-saving actions of his employees were a highlight of his 25-year career in the hotel business.

“It’s nice to know that the time and money we invest to make sure our staff is trained to handle situations like this made the difference in someone’s life,” Samuels said. “To see Mr. Spear alive, happy, healthy and so appreciative, it makes me really proud.”

Wednesday, following Spear’s first day back at work, he returned to the Laguna Cliffs Marriott to reunite with Heinsius, Samuels and other members of the staff who had a hand in his rescue and thank them once again.

At the reunion, Spear reported that as a result of the incident, 40 people had signed up for CPR/AED training at his workplace.

He also accepted Samuels’ invitation to attend the hotel’s next training course for free.

“I feel very lucky to be alive,” Spear said. “Bottom line, it happened at the right place, at the right time, with the right people around. Now I am looking forward to being trained, in case I ever find myself in a similar situation where I can help someone.”

Heinsius said that since the incident happened she’s had people say they don’t think they could have done what she did.

can do it. Don’t let the fear of messing up prevent you from trying. Getting trained is really easy. It’s all easy to learn and might make a big difference. Training will at least give you the confidence to try to help somebody—maybe even to save a life.”

According to Brown, anecdotal evidence suggests the vocalization playbacks at least occasionally bring in passing cliff swallows that fly over the site but do not stay to nest.

The goal of the next phase is to increase the stimulus being presented to the passing birds by creating the nest wall arch. Research has shown that cliff swallows prefer to reuse existing nests where possible, as this saves time and energy over building a nest from scratch.

Once the birds notice the plaster nests and begin using them, Brown said spillover or additional settling birds likely will lead to them building nests on the walls of the ruins of the Great Stone Church. And once nests are built, the artificial wall arch would no longer be needed.

WHAT’S GOING ON IN OUR NEIGHBORING TOWNS

SAN CLEMENTE I-5 South, Pico Bridge Update Work is continuing on the new I-5 bridge over Avenida Pico.

“Pile driving for the bridge foundation on the west side of the interchange is done, and crews are building the bridge abutments and pilasters, which will support the bridge deck,” said Eric Carpenter, OCTA spokesperson. “Work also is beginning on large retaining walls adjacent to the southbound Pico off-ramp and on-ramp.”

Officials said steel and wood falsework will cause several full nighttime closures of Avenida Pico, which is scheduled for early to mid-April. OCTA officials said they will confirm dates when the project is closure to starting.

The new retaining wall along westbound Avenida Pico, just before the on-ramp to northbound I-5.

Additional I-5 South projects include work continuing on realigning ramps at the Avenida Vista Hermosa and Camino de Estrella interchanges.

“In the coming months, motorists can expect nine-day full closures of the southbound loop on-ramp at Avenida Vista Hermosa and the northbound loop on-ramp at Camino de Estrella. Some of the other ramps at the interchanges will see weekend closures to accommodate work being done there.

Motorists soon will see crews performing paving activities along the northbound side of the freeway where it’s being widened.

The southbound side will follow. After the paving is completed, work will begin on the sound walls along southbound I-5.

Further north, at PCH/Camino Las Ramblas, work continues on a retaining wall under the Via California overcrossing. Once that wall and related work is completed, crews will shift to the median to begin work there.

Likely to begin in November, the work on the bridge is planned to shift to the east side of the interchange.

“Traffic will be shifted onto the new bridge and the remainder of the old bridge will be demolished and rebuilt,” the officials stated.—Eric Heinz San Clemente Planning Commission to Revisit Short-Term Living Rentals The city of San Clemente Planning Commission opted to give more time to explore the details of its short-term living units zoning amendments to recommend to City Council, an amendment that has caught the attention of many STLU owners.

Commissioners listened to the testimony of about a dozen people on March 16 during the regular meeting. The discussion has focused on where STLUs would be allowed to operate. as well as penalties for infractions and giving power to the home owners associations to decide if one can operate in its jurisdiction.

This is the third time the Planning Commission has put the zoning amendment on the agenda and continued the item. The next Planning Commission meeting is 6 p.m.

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO Mission Unveils New Phase in Plan to Bring Swallows Back During St. Joseph’s Day and the Return of the Swallows celebration on March 19, Mission San Juan Capistrano unveiled the second phase of its efforts to lure back the cliff swallows to the Mission grounds. The number of swallows nesting at the Mission has declined gradually over the years as urbanization has given the birds more options to build their nests around town.

which recorded courtship calls were played through a speaker on the Mission grounds to lure the cliff swallows that were flying overhead.

While Phase I continues, Phase II involves using a stationary nest wall arch near the ruins of the Great Stone Church. The arch consists of a wood frame, adobe and plaster, and is about 15 feet tall and 15 feet wide, allowing for approximately 40 nests made from molds and dental plaster stacked along

San Juan City Council Continues Search for Demographer for District Elections On March 1, the San Juan Capistrano City Council took another step toward holding district elections for council seats by directing the city manager to continue the search for a demographer to work on dividing the city into voting districts.

After receiving only one proposal out of six firms that were contacted, City Manager Ben Siegel and City Attorney Jeffrey Ballinger recommended the city hire Doug Johnson of the National Demographics Corporation at a cost of no more than $22,000 from the city’s General Fund.

With a unanimous vote, the council decided to direct the city manager’s office to expand the search and call for more proposals before selecting a firm for the job.

At their Feb. 16 meeting, council members unanimously approved transitioning from atlarge to district elections before the upcoming Nov. 8 election. Along with approving the switch, the council directed staff to bring back a district-mapping process that would include at least three community forums to gather input and authorized the city manager to hire a demographer. Community input and the demography work would be used to determine whether to create five districts or four with an elected mayor.

The council’s recent actions have been prompted by a voting rights lawsuit filed against the city on Jan. 27, which claims the city’s at-large elections violate the California Voting Rights Act of 2001 and result in “vote dilution for the Latino residents” by denying them “effective political participation in elections.” Latinos account for about 39 percent of San Juan’s population, and according to city staff, no Latino representatives have been elected to the City Council for at least the last five election cycles.

Ballinger and Siegel advised the council to initiate the switch to district elections—as many other cities that have been similarly sued have done—in order to avoid costly litigation.

red Honda Accord. The caller said they thought the woman who hit them needs to be checked on.

A woman was being released into a community program from Santa Ana and said there are three guns in her home. And the National Debt Grows Ever Larger

raditions run deeply in America. On every Feb. 2, since 1887, the groundhog Punxsutawney Phil emerges, to great fanfare, from his home on Gobbler’s Knob to view his shadow. If it’s visible, there’ll be six more weeks of winter.

We’re in the process of developing another tradition. The U.S. national debt, which amidst a display of anguish reached $17 trillion on Oct. 25, 2013 increased to $18 trillion on Dec 2, 2014—403 days later.

Thereafter, it surged to $19 trillion on Jan. 29, 2016—423 days this time. Once again an illusion of vituperation echoed throughout the nation. You may be certain that in the not too distant future we’ll hit the $20 trillion mark, on the way to forever.

Those who bemoan the ever-increasing national debt point out that it represents more than $58,000 for each man, woman and child in America. We are regularly reminded that this obligation must ultimately be assumed by our children

I am writing in response to the recent announcement by Saddleback Memorial that they are closing the San Clemente hospital and its emergency services May 31. When I became aware of this decision to convert the emergency department/ hospital to an advanced urgent care, ambulatory and surgery center, I became extremely concerned about the future of healthcare not only for San Clemente but surrounding communities as well.

Physicians and nurses who work and live in this community immediately met and discussed these concerns and realized MemorialCare had provided the community with their vision but the truth of the impact of the closure of the emergency facility had not been shared with the citizens. Having been an emergency department nurse, emergency department nurse manager, coordinator for prehospital care and inter-facility critical care transport operations manager prior to becoming a family primary care nurse practitioner provided me with the background to understand exactly what this closure would Dana Point Times March 25-31 2016

and grandchildren. As to its cause, many persons place the blame on a do-nothing Congress and an unresponsive presidency.

Although some analysts recommend a permanent debt limit, others call for a debt limit suspension or full repeal of the debt ceiling statute. And while the bickering goes on, we’re constantly warned that our inability to control the debt will bring our nation to the brink of default.

Let me now offer another slant on this controversy. What’s the actual significance of the national debt? It seems to pace itself against inflaSTRAIGHT TALK tion; as the debt rises in

By Al Jacobs dollars, the dollars fall in value. And there’s a fundamental difference between personal liability and collective liability. In the absence of joint and several liability, no one person will ever be

mean to our citizens and surrounding communities.

As healthcare providers, we decided to provide our communities with the research data available and allow our friends and neighbors to make an informed decision about their future healthcare needs.

In this fashion, Save San Clemente Hospital was formed with the intent of assuring the information would be shared with those interested in learning.

Our website and Facebook pages were developed and research data posted. What is most compelling is the correlation between time to care and outcome. Time to care includes not only travel time to the closest emergency department but also time in the waiting room or for the triage nurse or transfer from the paramedics to the receiving team. There is no disputing the increase in mortality rates as time to care increases. There is also no disputing as the 14,000 homes in Rancho Mission Viejo are completed the increase in population density will impact time to care. The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have many studies available online to provide all of us with an unbiased picture of our future without our emergency department and hospital. Ware Malcomb, an architectural firm, donated their services and designed a less expensive facility than MemorialCare had planned that could not only maintain services while being built but would provide MemorialCare

held individually responsible. Very simply, although each citizen may theoretically be on the hook for $58,000 of the nation’s unpaid obligations, no single individual will be found legally liable to ante up any portion of the debt. It’s for this reason most persons ignore it.

The reality is, the debt will never fall due. To paraphrase the late USSR tyrant Josef Stalin, when your personal bank account is overdrawn by $150, it’s a problem.

When the national budget is out of balance by umpteen trillion dollars, it’s a statistic.

with the ambulatory facilities, surgical services, medical office spaces and urgent care facility they wanted. It was called the “Win-Win” alternative because the ED and hospital were smaller than is currently in place. Indeed, MemorialCare supported the bills by both Assemblyman Bill Brough and State Senator Patricia Bates to maintain a free-standing ED as they acknowledge the need for emergency services in South Orange County.

Although MemorialCare does not believe an emergency department and hospital are viable in the new healthcare climate, there are other hospital groups who disagree and would love to partner in health with the communities of South Orange County.

Now that MemorialCare has announced closure, Save San Clemente Hospital and its 12,000 supporters hope they will decide to sell the facility to a hospital group interested in sharing our healthcare futures with us.

olorado-based quintet Elephant Revival will bring its layered, multi-dimensional sound to the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano on March 30.

Elephant Revival’s sound is tough to classify through the lens of a single genre.

The band, made up of musicians and singers who play multiple instruments, can emit a variety of tones and sounds ranging from folk to bluegrass, jazz, alternative and rock, just to name a few.

The band will primarily be performing tracks off their new album, “Petals,”

The band included parts for cello, octave fiddle, and pedal steel guitar into their arrangements on “Petals”, which gives the record a distinct sound.

“Compositionally, (the new album) is much more elevated … We allow the music to take us there. We follow the music and let the sound guide the way,” Rose said.

In addition to playing songs off “Petals”, Elephant Revival will be performing tracks off previous records, according to Rose.

At the Movies: Midnight Special’ for Cinema Fans

iding off the hype 10 Cloverfield Lane brought sci-fi thriller fans two weekends ago, Jeff Nichols gives us his own atmospheric, ambient sci-fi feature of the third kind with Midnight Special. Heavily inspired by the 1980s films of Steven Spielberg and John Carpenter, Nichols is wise and talented enough to not rely on retro and nostalgia for his recent film and shows how you can make a commercial film that’s equally entertaining and art.

In San Angelo, Texas, 10-year-old Alton Meyer (Jaeden Lieberher) is abducted from his adopted parents’ home by his biological dad Roy Tomlin (Michael Shannon) and local sheriff Lucas (Joel Edgerton) to meet up with Sarah (Kirsten Dunst) in Louisiana. The four race through the country by automobiles to a secret location when we see that Alton carries superpowers. Unfortunately, the government has been aware of his powers and is on the lookout for him.

interested in Alton’s case. Midnight Special is Nichols’ first film completely backed by a Hollywood studio, and it’s fortunate for movie fans that Warner Bros. had enough faith in the filmmaker to give him full reign creatively.

With the period piece Loving already on the way this fall, the auteur isn’t slowing down any time soon. Lieberher, Driver and Dunst are stellar here, and Nichols’ first full foray into sci-fi lives up to expectations with confidence, showing us that minimal special effects along with mood and tension can go a long way. ICE: An Important Tool All Seniors Need to Remember

T

oday’s story is a reminder of the importance of the acronym “ICE” (In Case of Emergency) in the lives of seniors.

The name of the woman who provided this information and the name of the man mentioned in her account of events have been changed at her request.

Last month, Joyce, 73, met Jeffrey, 70, online. She said, “Quickly, I felt he was very special. We had interesting conversations; he was respectful. He had a cute personality and was interested in me also.

After caring for his wife as she fought cancer for many years, he was ready to find a partner and move forward.

“Jeffrey and I absolutely clicked,” she said. “We were into our third date in four days. We were walking up a steep driveway at my condo development. I was two steps ahead of him when I heard him say something. I turned to look and saw him falling backwards, straight-bodied.

“His head hit the cement with a loud crack, bounced up and back down, cracking again. He began convulsing; blood was running out of his ear and the back of his head. He was unconscious.

“I yelled for help and called 911.

I thought he was going to die at any moment. A neighbor nurse showed up in a few seconds. A doctor friend of mine was driving up the driveway. He stopped his car and jumped out. He put his hands on each side of Jeffrey’s head to stabilize it. Blood was on the doctor’s hands and running down the driveway. Within five minutes, emergency vehicles arrived.

“A fireman was asking me questions and writing down my answers. He took my contact information and wanted Jeffrey’s relatives’ contacts also. I had none, other than their names. Jeffrey was rushed to the hospital.”

Joyce and the fireman searched Jeffrey’s unlocked car for information but found none. To help Joyce find the hospital emergency room, the fireman drew a map on his arm with a pen.

Although horrified and worried sick, Joyce said she drove herself to the hospital. She was led immediately to Jeffrey’s emergency room location. She said, “There he was, propped up on a gurney, conscious, giving me his cute smile and calling me by my name. It was unbelievable; I was so happy.”

Jeffrey could not recall his sons’ contact information, but his cell phone was on the gurney. With the help of a hospital employee, Joyce was able to eventually Page 13

send a text message to Jeffrey’s oldest son who lived nearby. But much time had elapsed.

Jeffrey kept telling Joyce he wanted to go home. The doctor told her that Jeffrey had two skull fractures and bleeding on the brain. The doctor said empathetically that if Jeffrey went home, he would die.

Jeffrey was moved to intensive care. Joyce was allowed to go there imON LIFE AND LOVE AFTER 50 mediately. A nurse asked

Now, Jeffrey is in a nursing facility. He is having cognitive and ambulatory issues and is losing weight.

Joyce says, “I have not given up. He is truly a very special man. I believe everyone should carry a couple of names and phone numbers in their wallet in case they become incapacitated.

“In dating, especially later in life, each person should get an emergency phone number or two from the other. Much time was spent trying to contact Jeffrey’s family based only on the two names of his sons he had talked about.”

When I shared this story with Doug, a friend of mine, he said, “In addition to keeping emergency contacts in your wallet, add them to your cell phone as well.

Mark both of them with the word ICE. An EMT told me that once a person is stabilized, the cell phone is checked for ICE listings and the numbers are called. Fire and police agencies also do this.”

Thanks to Joyce for sharing this heart-wrenching story. She and Jeffrey are in our thoughts. Don’t forget to add the word ICE to your emergency numbers in your phone and wallet.

Historic Reading Relocates for Sixth Annual Event The Dana Point Historical Society’s yearly reading of ‘Two Years Before the Mast’ to be held at Ocean Institute’s Maritime Barn DANA POINT TIMES

T

he Dana Point Historical Society’s sixth annual public reading of Richard Henry Dana Jr.’s Two Years Before the Mast is set for Friday, April 1 through Sunday, April 3 at the Ocean Institute’s Maritime Barn, 24200 Dana Point Harbor Drive, a new location for the event.

With the brig Pilgrim—a replica of the historic ship that brought the city’s namesake Richard Henry Dana Jr. to this coast—as a backdrop, more than 100 volunteers will read Dana’s memoir as a part of this traditional celebration of Dana Point history.

Volunteers are needed to take shifts reading for eight to 10 minutes each, for a total of 15 hours over three days. Volunteers are also being sought to serve as “watch officers” to oversee and manage each watch.

Bats Power Dolphins Softball to Win Over Tritons The Dana Hills softball lineup came ready to swing the bat against rival San Clemente on March 22. The Dolphins strung together five hits, including a first-inning home run, to plate six runs in the opening frame and cruise to a 12-6 nonleague victory.

Despite a strong wind gusting in toward home plate, the Dolphins batters were able to hit three home runs. Starting pitcher Serafine Parrish belted a firstinning two-run home run and swatted one more in the fourth, and Carlee Russo hit a grand slam in the second.

The runs have been coming in bunches for the Dolphins (8-7), who outscored Trabuco Hills on March 19 and San Clemente by a combined 23-7 margin. The Dolphins had not produced more than five runs in one game since March 12.

“We have been working on our hitting nonstop,” Dolphins head coach Brandon Cosenza said. “I felt like it was our greatest strength this season, it just took a little time to get everyone clicking.”

Dana Hills was not able to carry the momentum into its next game, however, and suffered a 5-3 loss to Mater Dei on March 23. The Dolphins were set to play a nonleague game against Edison on March 24.

Boys Volleyball Prepares for Tritons The defending South Coast League champion Dana Hills boys volleyball team hit a snag out of the gate in league play on March 15 when they lost to Tesoro in four sets. After a run through the Orange County Championship Tournament, where the Dolphins placed sixth, the team was swept by Trabuco Hills in a return to league play on March 22.

The Dolphins (16-7, 0-2 league) now face an uphill battle if they are to contend for the league championship. Dana Hills will host San Clemente (10-7, 0-1), a team that began the season ranked inside the CIF-SS Division 1 top-10 but has struggled recently.

Baseball Takes Down Tesoro in League Opener Dana Hills baseball head coach Tom Faris utilized two of his team’s best pitchers to piece together a 4-1 South Coast Leagueopening win over Tesoro on March 18.

Dolphins junior starter Hans Crouse threw three innings, allowing one run, and was replaced by senior Kayl Cota, who spun four innings of three-hit, no-run ball to get the win.

The Dolphins (4-3, 1-0) bats were led by Joe DeBaca, who went 2 for 3 with a home run and 3 RBI. Dana Hills lost a nonleague game to Alemany 5-2 on March 21.

The Dolphins were scheduled to play a South Coast League game against Aliso Niguel, the fi fth-ranked team in CIF-SS Division 1, on March 24. Results were not available at press time. The Wolverines (63, 1-1) have one league win over No. 6 El Toro and lost to Tesoro on March 22.

Singles Rotation Dominates for Dolphins Tennis The Dana Hills boys tennis singles rotation had a strong showing in a 12-6 South Coast League victory over Aliso Niguel on March 22. The trio of players, which included Marek Michulka, Tyler Bloom and Michael Perez, won eight out of nine possible points to seal the win and improve Dana Hills’ league record to 2-0.

Dolphins Boys Lacrosse Building Momentum The Dana Hills boys lacrosse team has been gaining traction all season long.

The Dolphins opened the season with a 10-6 win over Skyline of Utah on March 4, which turned out to be the first of six consecutive victories.

JSerra, a team that reached the finals of the US Lacrosse Orange County Championships last season, handed the Dolphins (7-1, 2-0) their lone loss of the season on March 18. JSerra defeated the Dolphins 15-9. But Dana Hills bounced back with arguably its strongest showing to-date in a 12-0 South Coast League victory over Laguna Hills.

Track Distance Team Shines at Laguna Beach Invitational The Dana Hills boys track and field distance runners packed three runners inside the top-5 of the 3200-meter run at the Laguna Beach Invitational on March 19. Senior Mason Coppi won the event with a time of 9:03.74, Jake Ogden took third (9:05.26) and Jack Landgraf took fourth (9:07.39).

ew Mexico’s Wil Collins went wireto-wire to shoot a tournament-winning score of 201 (-11) and claim the Oakley Southern California Open at Monarch Beach Golf Links on March 23.

The three-day tournament, sanctioned by the Southern California Professional Golfers Association, featured a talented field that competed on Monarch Beach and Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club from March 21-23.

Collins fired an opening-round 63 (-9) at Arroyo Trabuco to give himself a healthy lead. Back-to-back rounds of 69 were enough to hold off a charging field behind him.

he National Scholastic Surfing Association Southwest Conference Open season came to a close at event No. 10, March 19 and 20 at the Huntington Beach Pier. Victories in three of five divisions and five of six season titles were claimed by San Clemente surfers.

The sandbars and swell were working, delivering consistent surf in the chest-high range with occasionally larger sets, setting the stage for a slew of great performances by local groms.

Jett Schilling cemented a season conference title in Boys with a convincing win, secured with a near-perfect 9.17-point ride in the final. Schilling also earned a fourthplace Juniors division trophy.

Samantha Sibley also made the event trophy round in two divisions, with a win in Girls and a third in Women. In both divisions, she turned in a string of scores in the excellent range, including an impressive 9.67-point wave in her Women’s semifinal heat.

champ title, and the season winner in Women was Tiare Thompson (La Jolla).

Dane Matson took the Mini Grom division win—his second consecutive victory and fourth for the season—along with the division conference title. The season title was his first in NSSA competition.

“It was a battle to the finish between the top three Mini Groms, Dane Matson, Cole McCaffray and Hayden Rodgers,” Janice Aragon, NSSA executive director said. “It came down to whoever won the final event of the season. Dane pulled it off … and what was pretty awesome is that he won the final on a clutch, buzzer-beating wave.

He needed a high score and ripped a wave that posted an excellent 7.83 to clinch the victory and the conference title.”

Event No. 10 top honors in both Men and Juniors went to Eithan Osborne (Ventura).

And although Kade Matson was traveling in Australia and did not attend this final regular-season event, his impressive string

ane Matson, 10, of San Clemente, hit another amateur surf career milestone on March 20 at the Huntington Beach Pier, taking his first season win in National Scholastic Surfing Association Open Conference competition.

The Mini Grom division victory marked his fourth of the season and solidified his place as the 2015/2016 season champion.

The Concordia Elementary fifth grader said he has been putting in a lot of extra effort lately, training to reach this goal.

“I’ve been surfing a lot, every day after school, and especially practicing my bottom turns,” Dane said. “Bottom turn is key.”

He said he has also been relying on the support of his family for helping him to take his surfing to another level.

said. “And I’ve been looking up to my big brother (Kade). He’s been teaching me a lot—when he’s home. He’s been gone a lot lately, so I’ve really been missing him. He was so stoked when he found out I won.

“The level of competition is always at such a high level in the Open Season,” Aragon said. “The kids continue to push the limits of performance and it’s always so fun to watch them. I can’t wait to see what the Southwest kids bring to this year’s Nationals.” DP

After winning the Western Surfing Association U10 division last season, finishing No. 5 in U12 and realizing his goal of earning an invitation to compete in this season’s Surfing America Prime series, Dane said he set his sights on winning the NSSA Open Mini Grom title this season.

“When I got my last wave (in the final) I was under the pilings and I couldn’t really hear my score,” he said. “When I came in, I heard the announcement and I was just really happy. Now I want to win Regionals and Nationals next. It would be sick to do well in the USA Championships too.”

Dane said he plans on stepping up his training efforts even more in anticipation of the upcoming championship events.

“I am going to be surfing morning and afternoon, every day,” he said. “Oh yeah, and keep on working on my bottom turns.

Like I said, bottom turn’s key.”
