“Mental Health is Bipartisan.” “Be the Change.” “#BreaktheSilence.” “Students against Suicide.”

The Green Ribbon Club, a San Juan Capistrano-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on spreading awareness of mental health issues, held five demonstrations across South Orange County on March 18 in response to a string of recent suicides in the area. About a dozen students gathered at the corner of Stonehill Drive and Golden Lantern Street in Dana Point—as well as in the neighboring cities of San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano, Ladera Ranch and Laguna Beach—to show support for community mental health.

The Green Ribbon Club is a volunteerled, grassroots advocacy organization that aims to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness in Orange County.

Comprised of South Orange County students and recent graduates who have lost friends to either suicide or addiction, the club’s hope is to begin reducing the number of suicides and overdoses within the community by making mental health a household discussion.

According to club organizers, four youth suicides occurred in South Orange County within the first three months of 2017.

Nonprofit chairman and CEO Brian McInerney, of San Juan Capistrano, said more than 30 people between the five cities participated in the demonstration.

WHAT’S NEXT: McInerney said student club members have put $2,000 of their own money into the nonprofit as startup capital, and now their focus is on fundraising, recruiting additional staff and finding board members to serve on their board of directors.

“We hope to start student clubs in at least two high schools within CUSD by the coming fall,” McInerney added.

SOCSA to Perform ‘Shrek the Musical’ through Saturday THE LASTEST: The well-known story of an ogre and some fairytale creatures comes to life this week as South Orange County School of the Arts presents Shrek the Musical on stage.

Shrek premiered in the Porthole Theater at Dana Hills High School on Wednesday, March 22, and will continue with nightly performances until Saturday, March 25 at 7 p.m., with an additional matinee show on Saturday, March 25 at 1 p.m.

The actors will be accompanied by the SOCSA pit orchestra.

Council to Discuss Rope Installation at Strand Gate Next Month THE LATEST: Council approved to push the conversation of installing ropes at entrances to Strand Beach to April so conversations can occur between city staff and residents in the area.

In December, the California Coastal Commission voted 8-4 in favor of the city’s Local Coastal Program Amendment (LCPA), which replaced plans for retractable gates, that the city previously was in favor of using, with a rope.

During the March 21 Council meeting, Acting City Manager Mike Killebrew said

they would like to push the item off for a month to allow city staff to meet with the Headland Homeowners Association to discuss the item and receive public feedback.

City staff said they’ve been in communication with interested stakeholders including the Headlands HOA and would like to formally meet with the HOA to better inform the public about the item and solicit public feedback. The HOA was scheduled to meet on March 22.

WHAT’S NEXT: The Council will discuss the item during the April 18 meeting.

Council OKs $15,000 Agreement to Discuss Parking for Doheny Village Plan THE LATEST: City Council approved a $15,000 agreement with a Cal State Pomona University professor to facilitate parking study session meetings.

During the March 21 Council meeting, staff were directed to prepare an agreement with Richard Wilson Transportation Consultant, who will meet with individual staff, commissioners, stakeholders and elected officials on parking management, make parking presentations at the Council and Planning Commission study sessions, and create a technical memo assessing previous parking studies.

On March 9, briefings were held with Council members, staff, Opticos Design and Nelson Nygaard Consulting—both consultants for the city—to provide Council members information regarding formbased code, the zoning method proposed for Doheny Village.

According to city staff, the cost to bring in Wilson will be $15,000 based on his billing rate and estimating a little more than 50 hours.

South Coast Water District Discusses Potential Desalination Plant Risks THE LATEST: During a workshop to discuss the Value for Money Analysis, South Coast Water District directors agreed they had some “homework” ahead of them regarding the Doheny Desalination Project.

During the workshop, GHD—an engineering firm hired to assist the district with the project—and Charles Snyder from Professional Infrastructure Consulting Services told the board about the risks that could be associated with the project, the differences between a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) and a Design-BuildOperate (DBO) facility, and the price tag.

Many of the risks of either a DBO or PPP overlap, including: offshore geotechnical risks, local regulations and/or community concerns, aquifer flow and water quality, electricity and consumables consumptions, electricity price and access to waste disposal options. The district could also be exposed to inflation and power cost escalation rates, debt servicing, water volume and quality, and risk of law change.

One main difference is that the PPP transfers some risk from the district to the partnering company.

Director Dennis Erdman said the district needs to really look at what size plant would be most effective for the district and that they needed to “be careful” about how the project could affect their relationship with Metropolitan Water District of Southern California.

Most of the directors agreed they need to be aggressive about reaching out to potential partners.

Creating a Legacy Dana Point artist Lance Jost commissioned for the Hobie Memorial at the new Linear Park

I

nside his Dana Point home, artist Lance Jost works on the hands of his newest sculpture. Around him, his artwork adorns the walls in the forms of surfboards, mythological sculptures and paintings.

Jost is currently working on a life-size sculpture of Hobart Alter, otherwise known as Hobie. It’s set to be placed in Linear Park as part of the South Cove development off Pacific Coast Highway and Del Obispo.

“He was such an important figure around here,” Jost said.

Jost has been working with the Hobie Memorial Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to constructing a memorial honoring Hobie’s life and his contributions, to bring the sculpture to life.

“There was great enthusiasm, everybody saw the importance of this,” Jost said.

Jost has previously worked on a couple other pieces in the city. In 2009, the pedestrian bridge over Pacific Coast Highway officially opened with two mosaics created

by Jost underneath.

“I heard they were going to build a bridge off Coast Highway, and I knew they were planning on having photographs,” Jost said. “I know the photographic process, and I knew it could be expensive.”

He said he wondered why they wouldn’t have a local artist create a mosaic, so he pitched his idea.

His two pieces include one inspired by a photograph of a whale breaching in the Dana Point Harbor.

“Fortunately I had the ear of the people and they went for it,” Jost said. “It’s wonderful because not only does it encourage (local recreation), but it promotes the arts.”

Jost’s next piece was unveiled to the city in 2011 in La Plaza Park. Jost and landscape architect Yvonne English created the Mary Ellen Thomas Memorial Fountain.

“Since I knew it was going to be right in front of the Hobie store, I thought how fitting it would be to include sculptures of surfers into it,” Jost said.

The fountain not only includes surfers, but Jost said the city wanted to see local marine life incorporated into it, which Jost researched.

made out of little pieces of glass arranged together, but because Jost is a sculptor, he carves pieces, molds them and casts them into glass.

Jost’s work expands outside of the city’s limits. In San Juan Capistrano, he created the 15 Stations of the Cross piece at Saddleback Church. Jost also created a mural inside Jimi Hendrix’s recording studio in New York City almost 50 years ago.

“I met with Jimi Hendrix’s manager and showed him my portfolio and talked to him about doing the credits for [a surf]

movie,” Jost said. “He saw all my pieces that I painted of space, and he said Jimi wanted a mural in his recording studio in New York City.”

He joked there was no surfing in New York City but it was an experience he’d never forget.

“I found myself in Greenwich Village,” Jost said. “I ended up being there for nine months while I stretched a big canvas in a loft we rented. It was 100 feet long, floor to ceiling.”

Jost said the finished piece makes it look like you’re standing in a space ship and looking out.

Art has been a lifelong endeavor for Jost. He excelled at art classes in grade school, and continued to develop his skills through his youth. He eventually graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Cal State Fullerton and a master’s degree from Cal State Long Beach.

He uses his Dana Point home as his workshop and has created multiple pieces there.

“I made a large horse that was cast in bronze with a warrior on his back,” Jost said and pointed to the middle of his living room. “We built it right here.”

When asked how they could get the large piece out the door, he laughed.

“We had to cut it up and carry it over the neighbor’s fence,” Jost joked.

Zephyr, the developer of South Cove, officially broke ground earlier this year, and the new statue could be installed as early as the end of the summer.

Recently, Director of Community Development Ursula Luna-Reynosa spoke about

the park during the Dana Point Civic Association’s Coffee Chat. She said the park will celebrate California’s history along with Dana Point’s role in the region.

Jost said not only did Hobie change the surfing industry, but the skateboarding industry as well.

“To me, this is what Hobie is about,” Jost said. “I realized when he passed, it was incredibly important to commemorate him for his accomplishments.”

Jost is working with Robbie Roberson, owner of Spartan Marine and Hobie Memorial Foundation director, who originally worked on the Hobie Cat with Hobie himself, on the actual catamaran for the sculpture.

Together they’re making sure Hobie is sculpted to sit on the boat just right. He’s also invited Hobie’s family over to make him as realistic as possible.

“Although I knew him, I wasn’t with him day in and day out and pretty much have to rely on photographs to get his image,” Jost said. “Photographs are very difficult without people who knew him well to show me things that they think need to be brought more into mind.”

David Baer, his art representative, said the work Jost is doing will be a talking point for years to come.

“It gives a centralized point to the story, it all happened right here,” Baer said.

Jost nodded and added this will add to the identity of Dana Point.

“When used right, art enhances the quality of life,” Jost said.

Dana Hills Senior Wins Boys & Girls Clubs of Orange County Youth of the Year Sarah Arce, a senior at Dana Hills High School, was named the Boys & Girls Clubs of Orange County Youth of the Year.

Arce was named the 2016 Youth of the Year by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Capistrano Valley last month. She’s been a part of the Via Positiva Branch in San Juan Capistrano for 11 years.

Arce competed against other finalists from clubs across Orange County and will now move on to compete for the Boys & Girls Clubs of California Youth of the Year, where she could earn a $1,000 college scholarship.

If selected as the state’s Youth of the Year, she will compete for the Pacific Region Youth of the Year and a $10,000 scholarship.

Winners Announced in Gelson’s Dana Point Festival of Whales Coloring Contest This year’s winners of the Gelson’s Dana Point Festival of Whales Coloring Contest were 3-year-old Sophia M., of Anaheim; 5-year-old Emma M., of Glendora; 10-year-old Emerie H., of Ladera Ranch; 12-year-old Rayne G., of Pasadena; 17-yearold Annalese Von Gremp, of Dana Point; and 67-year-old Brad Brandmeier, of Dana Point.

The winners were announced on March 15. The contest had six age divisions, including one adult category.

Each winner received a $50 Gelson’s gift card and a whale watching adventure for four from Dana Wharf Whale Watching or Captain Dave’s Dolphin and Whale Safari.

Resource Officer to Host Informational Talk for Parents at Dana Hills High School Deputy Matt Timmins, the Dana Hills High School resource officer, and Mike Darnold, family support for the city and the high school, will lead a 60-minute presentation followed by a Q&A on Tuesday, March 28.

The presentation will cover what parents need to know in 2017, cell phone etiquette, high-risk trends for teens and how to talk to teens about marijuana and e-cigarettes.

The presentation will be held from 6:308:30 p.m. in the Porthole Theater.

City Budget: It’s All about the Money

C

ity government issues are deeply tied to the question of money—what will it cost, is the project worth it, where will the money come from, how reliable are the revenue sources? The city of Dana Point is in the process of deciding how its money will be spent for the next two years. This budget preparation should, and does, command a lot of community input. But sometimes, definitions and terms used are confusing, communication suffers and frustration levels rise. In this week’s column, I hope to raise awareness that a new budget is in the works and to define some of the terms that get used and misused when discussing the budget.

Purpose of a budget: (a) No city may incur any debt or liability in any year that exceeds income and revenue anticipated for that year without two-thirds voter approval (California Constitution, Article XVI, Section 18). To verify compliance, a city must determine its anticipated income and revenue. A budget does this. (b) The city administration cannot spend public money without legal authority to do so. A budget does this.

It is the fiduciary responsibility of the City Council to review and approve the budget, and to ensure long- and short-term financial awareness.

Fiscal Year: The city of Dana Point operates on a fiscal year that begins on July 1 and ends on June 30. The city uses a twoyear budget, prepared by the city staff and approved by the City Council. The current budget period ends on June 30 of this year, so preparation of a new budget for fiscal years 2018 and 2019 is underway. This new budget should be approved by the City Council before July 1—the start of fiscal year 2018—and will be used to authorize expenditures until June 30, 2019. The City Council does have the right to adjust the budget at any Council meeting with a majority vote, but this does not diminish the importance of making this budget as accurate as possible.

Budget Basis: This budget should reflect the community’s priorities, estimate revenues by source and expenses by function based on actual revenues and expenses history and anchor to long-term forecasts (five-plus years). Service metrics, programs and deferred maintenance also contribute.

Fund Accounting is an accounting system for recording revenues whose use has been prescribed by the source, grant authority, governing agency, law or policy in separate restricted COUNCIL'S or unrestricted funds. Dana Point’s financial accounts are separated into several funds: General, Gas Tax, Clean Air, Capital Improvement, Facility Improvement and Park Development to name a few. Each fund has its own budget and accounts.

General Fund: This big-daddy of the funds is the operating fund used to account for the delivery of the day-to-day services provided by the city. It is the largest and most interesting fund, and most of the budget preparation will be spent on it.

All of the city’s unrestricted revenue such as property taxes, sales taxes and transient occupancy taxes goes into this fund.

The General Fund also includes General Fund Reserves, contingency reserves required by state law or city ordinance that have specific rules for both amount and usage. Emergency Reserve, Cash Flow Reserve, Art in Public Places Reserve are some of the General Fund Reserves included in the Dana Point budget.

Capital Improvements Program (CIP) Fund: The CIP is a capital fund that details acquisition, construction or rehabilitation of major capital facilities and infrastructure. CIP is separated into several maintenance and project funds to allow increased visibility and control. Since many capital projects, revenue resources and expenditures may extend over several years, CIP has a rolling seven-year plan. Although some special revenue funds go directly into CIP, the primary source of revenue is transferred from the General Fund.

Challenges: Internal challenges such as escalating costs and aging infrastructure, as well as external challenges such as varying state funding, state and federal mandates, and unfunded pension liability all make budget preparation difficult and even more important. I am sure that many interesting dialogues among city staff, City Council members and the residents of Dana Point will take place over the next three months as the fiscal year 2018-2019 budget is prepared and approved.

Look for more communication from your City Council as budget preparation moves forward.

ON SOLVING BEACH EROSION PROBLEMS AMBROSE MASTO, M.D.

We all love Dana Point. We truly are all blessed to live here. Last week, the DP Times showcased two letters. Toni Nelson wrote an article concerning the beach erosion problems that have affected the city’s coastlines. The letter outlined several methods that both coastal property owners and the city have employed to help deal with the coastal problems. These have included placing rip rap boulders along the coast protecting beach parking lots, public rest room facilities, as well as transferring tons of sand that had collected in the Harbor area and pumping it to Capistrano Beach. Other solutions were mentioned including building low level seawalls and placing protective boulders in front of structures but environmentalists as well as the California Coastal Commission (CCC) generally are negative about these solutions.

Another letter was submitted by Jennifer Savage, California policy manager at Surfrider Foundation. This letter essentially was negative to all forms of beach protection, saying basically that “armoring” the beach not only fails to protect the beach but they protect structures and coastal developments at the cost of the beach, and they also destroy public access. Also, predictions of rising seas by 2030 make all these kneejerk responses to protect property along the coast expensive to the taxpayer and worthless because the policy of “managed retreat” is the only smart answer to the problem. Now, managed retreat is supported by the CCC as well as the Surfrider Foundation. And it is this fact alone that should alert all people who are concerned about their property rights and unjust and illegal seizure of private property that they look into what is implied in the theory of managed retreat, a nonsense euphemism by which a government allows itself to seize a private property without compensation to the legal owner.

I urge you to realize what truly is going on behind the managed retreat approach and work with our responsible civic leaders in reworking a legitimate Local Coastal Plan that will be a credit to this beautiful city and its residents.

risten Stewart is one of the most polarizing actresses of her generation. People either like her or make fun of her. The Twilight franchise will always follow her around, unfortunately, but on the upside, she’s gotten to work with many respected filmmakers and actors outside of that. Stewart’s most impressive work has been Panic Room (2002), The Runaways (2010), Camp Xray (2014), Café Society (2016) and now her second movie with writer-director

Maureen Cartwright (Stewart) is spending some time in Paris after her brother’s death and is hired as a “personal shopper” for an A-list fashion designer, who doesn’t have time to run her own errands. For side work, she’s also a supernatural medium locating and communicating with ghosts and spirits lingering in houses and buildings. A certain spirit has been following her everywhere, but she can’t be sure if it’s a stranger or her brother.

Personal Shopper is everything you wouldn’t expect from a ghost story. There is a very effective eerie and creepy vibe throughout the film, but there is no suspenseful music score and no jump scares. Stewart does very well with the large amount of screen time and development she’s given, seeing as Maureen’s actions and reactions are the center of attention in all but two scenes. Those who are fans of Assayas or the female star will benefit the most from this piece as well as those looking for a unique character study with spookiness. DP

Exploring nature and leaving the cell phone behind

Our natural surroundings are often overlooked in today’s technologically immersed way of life. And that’s to the detriment of our next generation of kids—getting out in nature is good for the mind, body and soul. Luckily for kids in South Orange County, getting away from the hustle and bustle is easier than it may seem. A quick drive in any direction and you’re outside the urban jungle.

The Reserve at Rancho Mission Viejo Throughout the summer, the Richard and Donna O’Neill Land Conservancy offers programs for all ages to enjoy. Currently, the conservancy is hosting stargazing events and seeks volunteers for various activities.

Located past the western border of San Juan Capistrano, the Reserve is home to a bounty of wildlife and open space.

On June 3, The Reserve will host “Ready, Set, Summer Family Walk” from 9-11:30 a.m. and will include summertime games and activities.

The walk is intended for ages 6 and up and is $5 per attendee.

San Clemente Beach Conservation Junior Environmentalists The San Clemente Beach Conservation Program is planning to offer a “Junior Environmentalist certification program this spring and summer to involve local youth looking to have fun at the beach. Anyone participating in three of the program’s beach cleaning events from April to August will receive a “Junior Environmentalist certificate.

“With 12 beach cleanup events scheduled from April through August, this is a perfect opportunity to have some fun in the sun and get educated on the effects litter has on our beaches and ocean,” said executive director of the program, Shon Miller. “The Friday evening cleanups are at the San Clemente Pier, and free s’mores and pizza will be offered. At the Saturday events at San Onofre State Park campgrounds, there is free parking, breakfast and coffee. It’s a great way to meet new friends, connect with the local community and have fun at the beach all at the same time.”

Go for a Bike Ride Riding a bike is one of the simplest joys of summer. Various trails for biking are available throughout Dana Point, San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano. Search for route maps on the respective city websites, www.san-clemente. org, www.danapoint.org and www.sanjuancapistrano.org.

Brenda Miller, a co-founder of the PEDal bicyclist advocacy group, said the areas where the city and county are currently making improvements will benefit cyclists throughout the southernmost point of Orange County.

Some bike trails in San Clemente are specifically secluded from traffic, giving riders—and parents of young riders—peace of mind.

Miller said the construction project along . El Camino Real leading to the Pacific Coast Highway will give people almost nine contiguous miles of uninterrupted trail.

Search for local bicycle rental shops within the three towns.

Hike Tenaja Falls Located just outside Lake Elsinore, Tenaja Falls Trail offers a serene experience outdoors far from urbanity. It’s best to go with the kids on this trip.

“A pleasant half-hour hike will take you to Tenaja Falls, with a dramatic sight when water is flowing,” according to the Cleveland National Forest website. “Spring is the best season to view the falls as active wildlife flock to the water and an abundance of wildflowers and birds are present. The trail winds another 2.1 miles up the canyon ending the Morgan Trail.”

Breaking the mold of the traditional sleepaway camp

The traditional overnight camp, where kids sleep in a cabin with the noises of the woods surrounding them, is not the only option for today’s overnight camps. Now, Orange County kids and families, are able to board ships, create science and technology projects and catch a wave or two. Check out these three overnight camps in the nearby area.

The Ocean Institute offers three types of overnight camps in the Dana Point Harbor for area kids.

The first is the Family Sea Over for guests 8 and older. Those who attend will join the crew on The Pilgrim, help raise the sail, hoist cargo and more. Dinner will be served by the camp fire with sea chants, legends and stories. Families will be able to camp out in the Institute before whale watching aboard the R/V Sea Explorer.

The second overnight option is an EcoExpeditions camp for children 10-12 years old.

In this camp, kids will get a unique learning experience about organisms and how they adapt to their habitats, which range from the Dana Point Harbor to the deep sea. They will also be able to drive a remotely operated vehicle, ride in a kayak in the Harbor and have dinner by the campfire.

The third camp is for the adventurous 11- to 13-year-olds. Campers will take a voyage to Catalina Island aboard the schooner Spirit of Dana Point and learn about the tall ship sailing life. The days will be split between the Ocean Institute and two to four days at sea.

949.498.7862. f the thought of spending five days in the sea catching waves is more your child’s speed, the Endless Summer Surf Camp may be the camp for him or her this year. The camp isn’t just for beginners, and it’s not just for the pros—it’s for everyone.

The camp has been open for 25 years and the staff prides themselves on using their knowledge and expertise to help kids surf. The camp location is ideal for kids learning to surf with a beginner-friendly, sand-bottomed beach break at San Onofre.

Instructors work in small groups, including a 3:1 student to instructor ratio for beginners, to provide each camper with individual attention.

During the five-day overnight stay, kids will learn the basics of surfing, surf etiquette, ocean awareness and more. At the end of the week, campers can participate in a ust for fun surf contest. ot only is there surfing, but kids will be able to skateboard, play ping pong and basketball, get surfboard ding repair demonstrations, tour local surf shops and more.

Campers will be able to use top-of-the-line surfboards and wetsuits, and the camp provides a variety of longboards and short boards to meet every camper’s needs.

And if five days isn’t enough, the camp allows kids to stay multiple weeks.

The one-week camps for kids ages 8-13 includes a three square meals, social nights, elective courses, and a lot of sea exploration. Ocean activities include snorkeling, introduction to SC A exploration, sailing, stand-up paddling, kayaking and underwater photography. Kids will get to safely explore the ocean at night, as well. There’s also a crafting component for the campers, which includes tie-dying, murals, painting, jewelry making and more. And the one-week version of Sea Camp also includes all the overnight camp favorites like campfires, ice cream socials, a beach party, swimming and sports, dancing and more.

The three-week program is open to kids ages 12-17. It’s a combination of diving, sailing, marine science and adventure courses that is sure to be irresistible to outdoorsy kids.

The camp offers SC A certification and excursion, boat and shore diving, small boat and catamaran sailing and ocean kayaking.

Art has a unique way of opening a child’s imagination. When you put a pencil, camera or pastry brush in their hands, you empower them to create something in their own vision.

You needn’t be a Handl or Hemingway to give your kids exposure to various art forms this summer. In fact, the less rules the better. But by rotating artistic endeavors over the course of a week, you’ll keep your child engaged and end up on Friday with a catalogue of art. Feel free to put your own spin on the one-week art camp—play a different instrument every day or bake five cakes from five continents throw in dance, jewelry or clothing design, or kid-friendly woodwork. The possibilities are endless. Here’s a sample of one week of camp.

DAY ONE

PAINTING It’s well known that kids love to paint, if for no other reason than it creates a big, fun mess.

Though water colors and paint to numbers are fun, throw the activity on its head and get outside for a painting excursion. Follow the lead of plein air painters in the tri-cities and set up an easel for you and your kids at one of the area’s picturesque locations. Plein air painters have previously set up in front of tall ships in the Dana Point Harbor, overlooking the San Clemente Pier and on historic Los Rios Street in San Juan Capistrano.

DAY TWO

WRITING Anyone who has read a short story or journal their kid has brought home from school knows that writing is truly a space where kids can explore the depths of their imagination.

Focus your camp writing activity on a finished product—something of which he or she will feel proud and that you’ll cherish for years to come. Come up with wacky writing prompts to spur your child’s imagination like “What would happen if people lived in the ocean?” or “What if your dog was president?” And the form the writing takes can be up to you or your kid—free writing, haiku, poetry, short story, a novella, a screenplay, a comic book. Let your minds go wild.

DAY THREE

PHOTOGRAPHY Technology has made the art of photography accessible to more people than ever before.

With phones, tablets and computers, kids are almost inherently equipped to snap a photo. In fact, photography may not even seem like an art to kids as much as a critical piece of communication. That’s why creating an art project that uses photography to tell a story can be so fruitful. Take a road trip and have your child snap photos from beginning to end. Or have them snap photos from the minute they wake up to the time they go to sleep. Whatever your excursion, have your child package the photos in a slide show or photo essay to share with friends and family.

DAY FOUR

SCULPTURE If you think about it, kids are making sculptures almost before they encounter any other art form. From building blocks to playdough to clay, children are drawn to create out of a variety of materials. For sculpture camp day, get out of the house and head to the beach.

There, you can help your child create a sand building (they won’t even know they’re doing art), or partake in the art of rock stacking—the process of balancing rocks of different shapes and sizes on each other.

DAY FIVE

FOOD The culinary arts have officially taken off across the nation. You needn’t look any further than TV shows like Chopped Junior or Masterchef Junior to see that kids as young as 7 are fully capable of and interested in preparing world-class meals. On the last day of camp, research a recipe and then go to a store or farmers’ market to pick out ingredients. Let your kid sample and smell flavors and take risks with the recipe. Then, with careful supervision, watch your young chef prepare dinner for the family—that’s not a bad way to end a week of at-home camp.

Movies screened outdoor and in theaters can enrich a child’s summer

We often look at the big screen as an indulgence. But for kids, movies can inspire creativity, boost self-esteem and help them unwind from a busy day, just like adults. Luckily, South Orange County is home to several opportunities to view kids’ movies in theaters as well as in community parks.

If you can’t get enough screen time at these places, check out the library schedules in Dana Point, San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano—they often host movie nights for kids and adults. There’s also several concerts in city parks throughout the area, which will complement your movie-going experiences this season.

The city of San Clemente hosts open-air screenings of child appropriate movies in Tierra Grande Park every summer. The fun kicks off on June 9 with a showing of The Secret Life of Pets. Locals have flocked to Lantern Bay Park in Dana Pointon weekend nights the past several summers for a movie screening in the park.

The films are kid-friendly, and refreshments including popcorn are available. All you need to bring is blankets, lawn chairs and your family to have a good time. The movies generally screen Fridays at 8 p.m. throughout June. Check www.danapoint.org for a list of showings.

l e e Several cities through Orange County host similar open-air movie nights. Irvine hosts a free outdoor movie from June through July at the Orange County Great Park. It’s a cozy scene, with families sprawled out across the expansive lawn, and food from a snack bar and food trucks available. In Lake Forest, there is a Friday night outdoor movie throughout the summer. Showings are held at the Nature Park, located at 26215 Dimension Drive. And if you’re in the mood for an old school theatrical show, Newport Beach hosts outdoor Shakespeare performances throughout the summer.

Learning to play a musical instrument this summer will be a lasting gift

Live music and summer go together like peanut butter and jelly. There’s something about listening to a concert under the stars or noodling around on a guitar on a hot afternoon that just feels right. But music isn’t just a way to pass time in the hot months—getting your child involved with music this summer can pay serious dividends down the road.

By giving your child exposure to live music and teaching them how to play instruments or sing, you give them a gift that lasts a lifetime.

They’ll look back on the friends they made at music camp or the guidance of a music teacher often throughout their life. Also, learning to play music improves kids’ ability to focus, instills discipline and opens creative avenues in their minds—all in a relaxed, fun setting.

South Orange County is home to several camps, lessons and open mic nights that are appropriate for kids of all ages to check out this summer.

BANDING TOGETHER Summer camp is a great way to teach kids music in a group setting.

Students at the Los Rios Rock School in San Juan Capistrano are doing amazing things, including putting on concerts that rival the quality and precision of musicians twice their age.

And their weeklong summer camps run from the start of June to the first week of August and are catered separately to beginner/intermediate groups and advanced groups. Paddleboard and bodyboarding camps get kids on the waves

The beach is synonymous with summer.

Thanks to our beautiful resource just minutes away, the ocean provides plenty of fun in the sun while simultaneously teaching up-and-coming beachgoers safety, respect for the environment and how to have fun in a social setting.

BODYBOARDING CAMP

Making a resurgence in Southern California, bodyboarding comes with all the technique and fun of surfing, but with smaller and less expensive gear. A perfect combination, especially for kids who just want to test the waters. Thanks to founders Emily and Steve Barnes, this will be the first bodyboarding camp offered in San Clemente.

“I was interested in the sport and wanted to improve my skills, but I soon realized there weren’t a lot of camps, especially locally,” Steve Barnes said.

This curiosity and research led Steve to find professional bodyboarders and owners of eBodyboarding in San Clemente, Jay and Vicki Reale.

“There’s a rich history of the sport here in San Clemente, with T-Street being the epicenter in the late ’70s, so it made sense to open the summer program in this hot bed,” Vicki Reale said.

With full support from the city of San Clemente, Bodyboarding Adventures was finally approved for its first program this year.

Impressed with the community support, the four began piecing together a curriculum that was palatable for all levels of bodyboarders.

Ages range from 6-16 years old, and the camp is open to both seasoned boarders and newcomers.

“We are trying to teach a healthy respect for the ocean. Along with being out on the water, we want to teach the kids about the surrounding ecosystem so that they are able to leave with a well-rounded education,” Barnes said.

Certified first-aid members and experienced lifeguards make up the instructors of the camp, which meets from June 5 to August 18. Two sessions are offered each day; 9 a.m.-noon and 12:30-3:30 p.m. For more information, visit www.bodyboardingadventures.com.

STAND-UP PADDLEBOARD CAMP

We started a S P camp specifically dedicated for kids in 2012, and our goal was to teach kids safety techniques while out on the water,” Wenzel said. We want (to teach) them to be strong and safe paddlers through having fun.”

Wenzel recalled the warm reception she received after adding paddle-boarding to her list of programs. “After 30 years of sailing programs, I knew that sailing just wasn’t some people’s thing. After adding the paddling program, I was met with positivity and it was an overall positive experience.

From June 6 to August 22, the camp will meet at the OC Sailing and Events Center every Tuesday through Thursday, from 8:30-11 a.m.

TIPS FOR A FUN AND SAFE BEACH SUMMER

Whether kids are in camp this summer or not, chances are they’ll be complementing their warm weather activities with trips to the beach.

Though a great place to exercise, socialize and unwind, it’s important kids learn basic safety tips before hitting the sand. Here are five quick tips courtesy of the Orange County Lifeguards on how to ensure a fun, safe summer in the waves.

BE AWARE OF RIP CURRENTS.

Rip currents are the No. 1 cause of lifeguard rescues at local beaches. They tend to be foamy, brown and mushroom-shaped, and they pull water (and those in the water) away from the beach. The best way to avoid getting caught in a rip current, which can pull you far from shore, is to practice swimming, locate lifeguards before entering the water, and learning the parts of the rip current—information which is available at www.oclg.org.

MIND THE FLAGS.

Lifeguards use flags, flying from beach posts and lifeguard towers, to help beachgoers recognize surf conditions. A red flag indicates extremely hazardous ocean conditions, and only expert swimmers and surfers should enter the water. A yellow flag

indicates moderate ocean hazards and rip currents. A green flag indicates mild ocean hazards, however it’s important to note the ocean can be hazardous on any given day.

CHECK FOR ROCKS AND REEF.

Rocky cliffs and outcroppings are fun to explore, but caution needs to be taken while doing so. Areas with water are prone to breaking surf, which can put people in harm’s way. Powerful waves are common at reef breaks, so swimmers should be careful and scuba divers should be mindful of their depth while exploring the area.

PROTECT YOUR SKIN.

Proper skin care can prevent painful burns and limit cancer risk. All it takes is covering your skin with a sunscreen of 15 SPF or higher. Wearing a hat and shirt, using an umbrella for shade, wearing U.V.-protection sunglasses and limiting time in the sun can all be beneficial.

LEARN TO SWIM.

It seems obvious, but learning proper swim techniques can save lives. The OC ifeguards recommend wearing fins to aid swimming, supervising young swimmers, and reeling in those that can’t swim overhead for more than 15 minutes to only waist-deep water.

Lights, Camera, Action at the Library

W

hile every year books are made into movies and TV shows, we are especially excited about direct translations and indirect relationships between the page and the screen. Come in and check some of these examples out.

Even before the movie was announced, Wonder by R.J. Palacio had been a popular book for older elementary and middle school readers. The book starts with Auggie Pullman, a 10-year-old who is going to school for the first time in his life. He was born with extreme facial abnormalities and was not expected to survive. While mostly told through Auggie’s point of view, Palacio includes chapters narrated by two of Auggie’s new school friends, Auggie’s sister and his sister’s former best friend. Set over the entire school year, readers go on an emotional and at times funny journey with Auggie. The movie is set to be released in April. Readers can borrow the book and the audiobook with three narrators from the Dana Point Library.

Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon is the story of a teen girl, Madeline Whittier, who’s literally allergic to the outside world. When a new family, including Olly, an inventive teen, moves in next door, Madeline begins a complicated romance that challenges everything she’s ever known. While it seems like a traditional

romance, Madeline has a rare condition—severe combined immunodeficiency—and Olly must live with his violently alcoholic father. The relationship between Madeline and Olly does become intimate but the author treats it well and appropriately for a teen audience. The story is told in short paragraphs, emails and chat exchanges as well as book reviews with diagrams, cartoons and illustraBOOK TALK tions provided by David

For those fans of Dan Brown or HBO’s The Young Pope, then Richard Harris’ Conclave is for you. Fans of Harris will remember his Fatherland and Pompeii. While not his best work, this is definitely a fast and compelling read. The pope has died and conclave begins. Four cardinals start out as frontrunners. However, information about each one comes to light and their candidacies fail. Eventually, another gets serious consideration, but he truly doesn’t want the position. Then a mysterious outsider no one has ever heard of before the conclave gets some consideration. But who is this cardinal? Where is he from? How did he become a cardinal? What other secrets does this stranger have? Several votes are taken throughout the conclave and while the story is good, one drawback is the ending.

One final secret is revealed on the last page that at the same time left me wanting more, but feeling like it was rushed. This doesn’t detract from the entire story, but readers should be warned.

Reunited High School Classmates Defy Conventional Wisdom

A

s a columnist writing about love and relationships for 23 years, I’ve strongly advocated that single seniors know each other well before moving in together or getting remarried. That belief got seriously challenged this month.

On Sunday, March 12, my partner, Greta, and I had surprise visitors to Dana Point. Phil Williams and Sue Hamlin were classmates of mine going all the way back to the fourth grade in Jackson, Michigan, where Phil, Sue and I grew up. He and I were on the swimming and track teams together. She was a popular cheerleader.

They wanted to share some news that nearly put me on the floor: Sue and Phil were married on Feb. 24.

They had seen each other only once in the last 50 years, for 20 minutes or so at our class’s 50th reunion, and they’d had no contact with each other since then. They never dated each other. Phil lived in Palm Springs; Sue lived in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to where she had moved five years prior to be near her children after being widowed.

Seven weeks ago, on Feb. 1, Sue telephoned Phil to tell him that a classmate of ours she had been caregiving had passed away in January. Phil told Sue that his wife, whom he’d been caregiving for several years, had also recently passed away.

On Feb. 2, Sue called Phil again. This thrilled him as he had always had a keen eye for her, and her voice filled an emptiness he had felt for years. They spoke daily for the next four days. Phil said, “The conversations were getting serious. We both were lonely and both wanted to share our remaining lives with someone special.”

Phil continued, “On Feb. 7, I said to Sue, ‘You need to get on an airplane and fly to California so we can have a serious face-toface discussion.’”

On Feb. 8, Sue emailed her plane’s arrival time: Feb. 24, 10 a.m., Ontario Airport.

Between, Feb. 9-15, marriage discussions emerged. Finally, Sue said to Phil, “If we are going to get married, why don’t you ask me?” Phil said, “OK, I just asked you.”

ids—together for the second time in 50 years—they were married at the County Clerk Office in Fullerton.

Their news stopped me in my tracks.

I was dumbfounded. How could that be?

What about my advice to get to know each first before getting married?

However, after seeing them together, hearing their stories and pondering their situation, I started to think this is wonderful. Finally, Phil nabs one of the prettiest and nicest girls in our high school class.

Both are widowed and both have been caregivers. Now, it’s their time together.

At our age, who’s got time to waste?

Phil said with a twinkle in his eye, “Sue and I passed Tom’s get-to-know-eachother-first advice. Heck, she and I have known each other for 70-plus years.”

I still advocate that seniors get to know each other well before making a commitment. However, I’m making one exception in Phil and Sue’s case. In May, after moving Sue’s belongings from Grand Rapids, they will make their home in Southern California. In the meantime, they are on an extended honeymoon right here in South Orange County.

I’ve often said, in searching for a mate, don’t forget to attend reunions and keep in touch with old classmates. What happens may surprise you, and everybody else who loves you.

Dana Hills Senior Places Second in Singing Competition

shley Patrick, a senior at Dana Hills High School, recently placed second in the Musical Theater category in the Stars of Tomorrow competition for her rendition of “Astonishing” from Little Women.

“I knew this was all or nothing,” Patrick said, adding that she felt there was nothing else she could’ve done. “I felt like I left everything on the stage.”

Stars of Tomorrow, held by the South Coast Singers, was started 10 years ago to provide an opportunity for Orange County high school vocalists to compete for scholarship money to assist them in pursuing their careers.

After an initial audition, 18 are selected to go on in the competition. More than $5,000 in prize money is awarded in two categories: classical and musical theater.

Patrick has now competed three times; she previously placed third in the Musical Theater category. She said this year was different, however, because she went in with a different game plan.

“I didn’t go in with the mindset to win, I

went in with the mindset to just perform,” Patrick said.

Although Patrick said she was nervous during her initial audition because it was the first time performing the piece, she chose it for personal reasons. “(The song) is about going out on your own and figuring out who you are,” she said. “I’m getting ready to go out to college, and I could just personally relate to it.”

Patrick said she was shocked when she heard her name called.

“The competition was really good. I was totally not expecting second place at all,” Patrick said. “I was happy the judges really enjoyed it. It was very rewarding.”

When asked if she noticed anything different competing for the third time, she said she really enjoyed the support of the fellow students against whom she was competing.

“It was really refreshing,” Patrick said.

“I really loved it, and it was nice to have the support of people my own age.”

Patrick said she hopes to study musical theater in college in the Los Angeles area. DP www.danapointtimes.com

The victory over the Monarchs ended a three-game losing skid for Dana Hills, which extended back to March 14 and the Laguna Hills Tournament.

Dana Hills was scheduled to play rival San Clemente for a fourth time this season on March 23. Results were not available at press time. A nonleague game against Edison will prepare Dana Hills for its Sea View League opener against Trabuco Hills on March 28.

Volleyball Set for League Opener

A seventh-place finish at the Orange County Championships on March 18 ended a long run of nonleague competition for the Dana Hills boys volleyball team. The Dolphins will now head into South Coast League competition.

The Dolphins (9-7) were scheduled to open league play against Capistrano Valley on March 23. Results were not available at press time.

A rivalry match against league opponent San Clemente is scheduled for March 28.

Baseball Taking Care of Business at Home Before Heading to Elite Tournament

The Dana Hills baseball team is not fazed by the idea of traveling across the country next week to compete in the prestigious National High School Invitational tournament in North Carolina, where they will be under the microscope of the entire high school baseball world.

They’re not treating it as anything other than a long road trip, and what butterflies one would expect to be there are missing entirely.

That’s because the Dolphins are too focused on taking care of business at home.

Dana Hills is on a hot streak, winning five of their last six games after starting the season off with four straight losses to tough opponents. They have vaulted into first place in the league standings, so looking past what is right in front of them, like competitive Sea View League opponents, is not what they want to do just yet.

“It’s kind of been our deal the whole year. I kept telling them these (nonleague) games don’t mean anything,” coach Tom Faris said. “I don’t care about rankings … what matters is what we do in league and what we do in the playoffs and they’re kind of catching on to that.”

Dana Hills (5-5) improved to a perfect 3-0 in league play on March 22 after defeating visiting Tesoro 4-1. Standout senior pitcher Hans Crouse tossed six innings of shutout ball and the Dolphins executed solid defense to pick up the win. The previous sentence could be used to describe the entirety of the Dolphins’ season to this point.

The Dolphins’ are struggling to find hits at the plate, and the team was batting a combined .237 through 10 games. But Dana Hills has relied on its strong starting rotation, which includes junior Jack Sterner, and its slick defense to get wins.

Over his last two starts Sterner has pitched 11 innings, allowed two earned runs, walked two and struck out 15. He pitched a complete game shutout against San Juan Hills on March 17 and holds an ERA of 2.10. Crouse, who lowered his ERA to 1.62 Wednesday, has tossed 12 1/3 innings over his last two starts, allowing Dana Point Times March 24-30, 2017

a combined seven hits, no runs and four walks while piling up 19 strikeouts.

Heading into Wednesday’s tilt with Tesoro, Dana Hills had not allowed a run in Sea View League play. An uncharacteristic error in the seventh inning allowed the Titans to plate their lone run and snap the streak.

The quality of the Dolphins’ starters helps jump-start the players in the field.

“Our pitching has been super key. (The pitchers) are carrying the team and doing their jobs,” said senior first baseman Joe DeBaca, who has yet to make an error this season. “When Hans or Jack come in, or any

of the other guys, we’re always super hyped to get behind them and play some defense.”

There’s no doubt all eyes will be on Crouse when the Dolphins open play at the NHSI tournament on March 29 against Cullman High School out of Alabama.

Crouse is regarded as one of the top high school pitchers in the country, and he will be a marquee name at the event.

Dana Hills will join defending tournament champion Huntington Beach, Orange Lutheran and South Hills as the California representatives in the elite 16team field.

Before they head out east, however, Dana Hills will travel to play games against Laguna Hills and Los Alamitos on March 24 and 25, respectively. You can bet those are the games they are focused on anyways.

Softball Gets Signature Win Against Mater Dei

The Dana Hills softball offense exploded for five runs in the fi fth inning to come from behind and defeat Mater Dei 11-7 on March 21.

Mater Dei entered the game as the fi fth-ranked team in CIF-SS Division 1, and the Dolphins had lost their previous three games.

Junior Cozette Zoch had two triples in the contest, the second of which helped spark the big fi fth-inning scoring rally.

Quentin Hill carded a score of 40 (+4) to earn match medal honors as the Dana Hills boys golf team defeated Mission Viejo 211-223 on the front nine of Mission Viejo Country Club on March 21.

The win was the Dolphins (3-3, 1-0) first South Coast League match of the season.

Dana Point Youth Baseball Holding Textile Drive Dana Point Youth Baseball is hosting a clothing and textile drive to help raise funds. The drive started on March 19 and will run through March 25.

DPYB is asking for people to donate unwanted textiles, such as surplus clothing or household linens, which will be turned in to Clothes for the Cause, an organization that repurposes such items.

A brief look at San Onofre’s earliest days

fter water polo practice a few nights ago, a couple high school kids were chatting about the impending road repairs at San Onofre and how it may impact their surfing habits.

“I heard the road’s going to be closed while they bring in some boulders and repair the road,” said one.

“That means we can’t surf the Point or Old Man’s,” matter-of-factly said the other.

“Dude! Good thing I have my electric bike, looks like I’m going to be surfing Church and Middles… what are you going to do?” the first snarked back.

The fact of the business is, when it does come time to repair the road at San Onofre, which was seriously damaged after large swells and tides washed a portion of it out this past winter, we will all be somewhat inconvenienced. Unfortunately, that’s the nature of roadwork. When and how long the repairs will take remains up in the air.

In the interim, a spring refresher on the glorious, and sometimes dubious, early days of San O. Did you know that nobody knows where the name San Onofre comes from? It’s a trick question, but the truth is that nobody seems to be able to figure it out. The name shows up on the original Santa Margarita Land Grant documents dating back to 1836, but there’s an argument to be made that “San Onofre” is a twisted amalgamation of the local Native American dialect and Spanish that was coined by early European settlers to describe the creek and nearby valleys.

There’s another school of thought that believes Spanish missionaries named the area after the 6th-century Egyptian saint, Onofreas. Whatever the case, when a small train station was built in 1880 and a handlettered sign hung out front reading, “San Onofre,” it was official.

Surfing didn’t really come to San O until the 1930s. At this time, there were probably less than 100 surfers in Southern California and eventually word of a fishing camp on a desolate stretch of beach halfway between Los Angeles and San Diego captured their imagination. The trip to San O was considerably different back then. Imagine heading south, ambling down a two-lane road through San Juan Capistrano, citrus groves in full bloom, the ocean rich with sea bass and halibut. Abalone and lobster thrived in the tide pools. No Interstate 5 or nuclear power plant. No traffic or waiting in line to park. It must have been a little slice of heaven.

It must have been a little slice of heaven.

In 1937, a man by the name of Frank Ulrich took control of the fishing camp.

He opened a gas station and cafe along the Pacific Coast Highway and began charging surfers 25 cents to spend the day at “his” beach (50 cents covered you for the weekend).

“Times were tough in those days, money–wise,” lifelong San Onofre surfer E.J. Oshier told the San Onofre Parks Foundation. He passed away in 2007. “It was still in the depression days, see? Money was hard to come by, and some of us guys were coming all the way down from the Palos Verdes area. So, we’d get a few of us to pitch in enough for some gas and a jug of wine. … That’s why we didn’t spend money on surfboards or trunks back then. If any of us had (money), we were off to ’Nofre.”

Very quickly the bohemian surf lifestyle took hold at San O. “We’d camp out there for days at a time and just sleep on the beach,” explained the late Leroy Grannis, who was a surf photography pioneer and distinguished member of the Palos Verdes Surfing Club. “During the week, you would get it all to yourself; but on the weekend, all sorts of characters showed up.”

maining aloof from the rest of the Southern California surf scene, which by this time was starting to take itself more seriously.

Competitions were starting to be organized and regional surf clubs formed.

“The real ’Nofre guys didn’t care about a club,” explained Oshier. “They went there to get away from that.”

This little golden period in California surf history could only last so long. In 1941, the United States entered into World War II and a lot of the San O regulars signed up for the service. In 1943, the U.S. Department of Interior claimed eminent domain over the Santa Margarita Ranch property, and it was leased to the Marine Corps and Camp Pendleton was built. Ulrich ended up losing his fish camp while the commanding officer of the new base denied all public access to the beach. San O would enjoy a renaissance after the war, but for those that were there in the early of days, it must not have been the same.

Times change, generations come and go, but as I was driving home from water polo practice, I couldn’t help but think about those two kids and what kind of fun they were going to have this summer. Whatever happens next down there, it always has been and always will be about spending long days on the sand and in the water. DP

rom of the Week honors go to 11-year-old Hayden Rodgers this week thanks to his breakout performance at the NSSA contest in Huntington Beach earlier this month.

Blowing up with double wins in the Open and Explorer Menehune divisions, the kid is on fire. Winning a few heats is all well and good, but en route to his two titles, Hayden posted a perfect 20-point heat score—rendering him literally unbeatable. For the effort, he was named NSSA Surfer of the Week.

“I’m super stoked to get double wins last weekend at the NSSA in Menehune’s and to be named Surfer of the Week by the NSSA,” said Hayden.

He’s savvy in a wide array of conditions, and when it comes to competitive success in Surf City, he explained, “I like the inside double up barrel section.”

The fifth-grader at San Clemente Christian School notes that Lowers is his favorite wave. And as far as goals go, he keeps it pretty simple: “Take the W!” When his homework’s done and the wind turns onshore, Rodgers has no problem keeping himself entertained.

Handy with a fishing pole or a golf club, surfing’s not the only thing that keeps him psyched. DP
