Five things Dana Point should know this week Gray Whale Spotted inside Dana Point Harbor THE LATEST: On Aug. 8, a gray whale made its way into the Dana Point Harbor and quickly caught both local and national attention.

Dave Anderson, owner of Capt. Dave’s Dolphin and Whale Watching Safari, said he heard the whale was in the Harbor around 7 a.m.

He said, while it’s not unusual for whales to be in shallow water, he believes it’s unusual to see a gray whale this time of year.

“We don’t normally have gray whales in August,” Anderson said.

Donna Kalez, general manager of Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching agreed.

“Gray whale season doesn’t start until November,” Kalez said. “The last one we saw was in June.”

Anderson said the whale looked to be 1.5 years old and said it looked “a little skinny.”

“I would say it’s maybe having a little trouble finding food,” Anderson said. “The fact that it’s not in the arctic eating, makes me a little concerned. But, I didn’t see anything that made me think it was in serious trouble,” Anderson said.

Residents Fill Sea Terrace Park for Day-Long Event THE LATEST: Sea Terrace Park was filled with music, emergency personnel and lots of vehicles for kids to check out on Aug. 6.

The city of Dana Point and Dana Point Police Services combined efforts to hold an emergency expo, a summer concert and National Night Out on Sunday.

At the beginning of the day there were law enforcement officers with patrol vehicles, a horse, helicopters, boats and their equipment for guests to look at and explore. Along the outer ring of the park were different booths occupied by South Coast Water District, Ready OC, Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District and more.

The city’s summer concert kicked off in the afternoon with Dana Point resident Sidney Bowen performing, followed by Redneck Rodeo and SMITH. The day-long event finished with National Night Out, which allowed guests to mingle with local law enforcement.

Dog Attack Leads to Investigation, Officials Said THE LATEST: After an incident where three dogs attacked another dog, and injured a man, some residents have voiced concerns regarding safety of their pets.

On July 28, police said a man in his 70s was injured when he attempted to break up a fight between his Wheaton terrier and three other dogs.

Kimberly Cholodenko, general manager at Coastal Animal Services Authority (CASA), said three dogs, all female Pitbull

mixes, came into the center that same day and were quarantined while an investigation took place. As of press deadline, the investigation was still ongoing.

Cholodenko said every situation is different, but during the investigation, information, including past history, will be gathered. Officials will speak with the owners of the dogs, any victims, as well as witnesses.

“Depending on the incident, if there are injuries, there could possibly be a declaration,” Cholodenko said.

The declaration in the city of Dana Point could occur if an animal has either engaged in an unprovoked attack on a person conducting a lawful activity or a restrained animal, or if a person believes he, she or their animal under proper restraint was in imminent danger of great bodily harm.

The city’s ordinances also describe what a “vicious” animal is, conditions of harboring a vicarious animal as well as the restraint ordinances.

Sgt. Richard Himmel with the Dana Point Police Services said the dogs were “inadvertently let loose by some landscapers, who left a gate open at the owner’s residence.”

Cholodenko said this incident is not common in their coverage area of San Clemente and Dana Point.

“There are more people and animals out in the summer months, but this is not a common occurrence,” Cholodenko said. “I think we see more of a minimal [incident] in a sense of severity of dog encounter. We do not typically see three dogs involved.”

County to Reveal Harbor Time Capsule Commemorative Plaque THE LATEST: The Dana Point Harbor 50year time capsule commemorative plaque will be revealed on Tuesday, Aug. 29, to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the time capsule celebration.

In August 2016, the county unveiled items from the 50-year-old time capsule in Baby Beach.

More than 60 items including photographs, brochures, letters and more were “buried” with an 8-ton rock during a ceremony at Doheny State Beach on Aug. 29, 1966, which coincided with the opening of the Dana Point Harbor. On May 5, 2016, OC Parks removed the rock in preparation of the ceremony.

Future Closures for San Juan Creek Trail Will Last Years during Improvements, Bridge Replacement THE LATEST: Residents and visitors who utilize the San Juan Creek Trail on a daily basis to visit Doheny State Beach or travel inland to Reata Park in San Juan Capistrano will have to use detours for more than two years due to upcoming trail closures from two different construction projects.

The first infrastructure project includes improvements to the levees along a onemile stretch of the San Juan Creek channel. Led by the county, the $33 million project aims to enhance flood protection.

Construction for the levee project is slated to begin in September and conclude in June 2019, with work hours of 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Friday. County officials said in order to “maximize safety and accelerate work,” the San Juan Creek Trail will be closed on both sides beginning mid-September through June 2018.

During that time, pedestrians can use the adjacent Creekside Park walkway. Bicyclists will be directed to follow a detour from Stonehill Drive to Del Obispo Street to Mariner Drive.

A second separate project, led by the Southern California Rail Authority, involves replacing a 100-year-old railroad bridge on the east side of Descanso Park over San Juan Creek.

During construction of the new bridge, the bikeway that runs east of the freeway to the San Juan Creek Trail will be closed, and signage will be posted directing cyclists along the following detour route: Avenida Padre to Camino Capistrano, left on Del Obispo Street to the Trabuco Creek trail levee, and then south.

Construction for that project is slated to start in 2019. The estimated duration is 30 months.

The San Juan Capistrano City Council approved the bikeway detour plan for the bridge project at its Aug. 1 meeting.

During the meeting, San Juan resident Mike Mathewson said he was “flabbergasted” by the proposed detour for a trail that hundreds of people use daily.

“That trail is the only way to Doheny.

It’s the only way to the trails all along the coast,” Mathewson said. “And what hasn’t been brought up tonight is that it’s for two and a half years, which means it’s going to be three to four.

Turkey Trot Early Bird Registration Ends Aug. 31 Early bird registration for the 40th annual Dana Point Turkey Trot ends Thursday, Aug. 31.

Early bird pricing for the 5K is $37, $42 for the 10K, $52 for both the 5K and the 10K and $17 for the kid’s gobble wobble.

On Friday, Sept. 1, pricing will increase to $42 for the 5K, $47 for the 10K, $57 for both races and $22 for the kids’ race.

This year, two 5K races will be available, one at 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. Both races are open to all age divisions.

The Dana Point Turkey Trot is held on Thursday, Nov. 23, in the Dana Point Harbor.

Our coastal demise started after seeing the DP Times front page with “Raintree construction’s project.” How did this get approved? A project that provides over population and congestion is beyond me.

The renderings looked so similar to Irvine, Anaheim and many cities with high density multi-use properties. The city catered to developers that have more interest in a metropolitan lifestyle than a coastal lifestyle. The Planning Department should be concerned more for the existing community and preserving the coast in all development and not what the developer wants. The rendition shows no coastal town, no beauty, character, charm or history. The landscape makes such a difference to visitors that travel for beauty and charm; this is where they will invest dollars. Unless the idea is to keep the tourists out while over populating the town and removing the charm.

Paradise as it was seen from pictures of my parent’s younger years of the late 1940s and 1950s was charming and filled with California history and surfing, which was an image that is slowly diminishing. A friend who works at a Dana Point hotel said many tourists ask, “What is

Kudos to Dodd-Frank

or those of you whose memory reaches back to 2010, you’ll recall the nation’s economy was not then vibrant. More to the point, the Dow Jones Industrial Average had fallen over 6,000 points in the prior 17 months and the housing industry lay in shambles.

The United States Congress came to the rescue, aimed at shoring up real estate lending practices by enacting the DoddFrank bill.

With regulatory oversight the intent, this 2,319-page law, signed into law by President Obama on July 21 of that year, established a myriad of regulatory committees promulgating programs to which banks thereafter adhered. Dana Point’s history?” I’m amazed with all the marketing that our city is producing doesn’t scream our history; Richard Henry Dana, Doheny, Hobie, surfing, The Pilgrim. The city is tearing down history and new development shows no signs of it, not even in art placed around town.

Instead of showing ideas of a metro mess and many events that trash our beaches, they give no story and no economic lift to the community. Preserving the past and allowing development that expresses this can only be a plus for all. Visitors love charm and uniqueness and character, not multi-use high density buildings that box away the ocean, only serving the people that live in the apartments. If a metropolitan city is what a tourist is looking for then as convoluted as they were arcane. The results were predictable: duplicative and often contradictory rules which promoted neither safety nor soundness. Mortgage lending became a nightmare with layers of red tape so burdensome that many potentially profitable firms simply abandoned the banking business. Only the mammoth institutions, with direct links to the federal regulators and the U.S. treasury, prospered.

Of the nearly 500 banks headquartered here in 1994, less than 180 remain. The smallest ones maintain too few assets to keep up with the ever growing compliance STRAIGHT TALK costs. It’s for this reason

By putting out of business almost all the community banks here in the Golden State, where my private mortgage loan firm operates, virtually all my competition is now gone. The muscle-bound giants that still process loans, such as Chase, WellsFargo and Bank of America, must do so in compliance with the Dodd-Frank rules. As the loans generated by my non-chartered company are exempt from these bizarre requirements, I can easily outmaneuver the few remaining behemoths.

I’m not sure if there’s a moral here, but I’m at least willing to offer thanks to legislative lunacy in facilitating my profitable enterprise.

Kevin Nealon has been making people laugh for decades, whether it was on shows like Saturday Night Live or with his film appearances and standup comedy.

Nealon began his career as a standup comedian, which he said he enjoys because of the creative freedom and immediate gratification of live performances.

“I like being in a room with a lot of people—the laughter and energy is a lot of fun,” he said.

Audience members at the Coach House will have a chance to enjoy Nealon’s standup on Saturday, Aug. 26, his first show in San Juan Capistrano.

For those who may not be familiar with Nealon’s extensive work, he’s wellknown for his nine-year stint as a cast member on Saturday Night Live (19861995). In addition to creating memorable characters like Mr. Subliminal and Hans and Franz, Nealon’s reoccurring role as an anchor on “Weekend Update” cemented the sketch as a staple of the show.

Later on in his career, Nealon received critical acclaim for his role as Doug Wilson in the Showtime series, Weeds.

Seniors Should Reveal Their True Age on Dating Profiles

I

n my previous column, I wrote about Dave, 81, a widower, who said he had a quandary. He looks 15 years younger than his age. Dave commented, “Several online dating sites advised me to adjust my age downward on my profile, then communicate my true age upfront when there is a connection.”

I wrote that I thought it was okay that he lower his age by a few years on his profile.

Dave felt justified to do so. Later, he wrote, “In the last year, on a top dating site, I have encountered women who have posted their age that was three to 10 years younger than their actual age. These same women posted pictures taken from three to 15 years ago.

“One woman confided, ‘If I had posted my current picture, you would not have wanted to meet for lunch.’”

Five women responded to my quasi-approval of him lying about his age.

Sarah said: “I would suggest that somewhere in his script on the dating site, Dave indicate that he is a young 81-year-old and full of vitality in lieu of telling an untruth.

He needs to be as he expects, and I doubt he expects or wants a woman to lie about her age, or anything else for that matter.”

Joan emailed, “The thought of someone lying about their age or anything on the dating site is always a red flag for me, and as soon as I find out the truth, which may be in the first email back and forth, I drop the person.

“I am 68 and look not more than 50, I

am told. I am proud of that and feel lucky and, also work at maintaining that. I would rather have a man tell me how good I look for my age than have him deal with how easily a lie can roll off my tongue and wonder what else I will lie about later.

“I am probably getting off the sites forever after my free six months with Match. com is over. Even though I know people who met on Match.com and got married, I think it’s such a needle in a haystack that it’s not worth the trouble. If I ever meet someone, it will be very random, like when looking at vegetables at Trader Joe’s.”

Karen, 63, wrote, “Please advise Dave to be truthful about his age on dating sites. When my girlfriends and I find out a man has lied on his profile, we eliminate him from possibility. If he’s lied about one thing, everything else he’s said is suspect, too. Truth is always the best. He will attract a great, honest woman if he keeps his faith!”

Christine Baumgartner, an Orange County dating and relationship coach, said, “When I coach my clients, I tell them to always tell the truth about themselves including their age. It’s very important not to lie.

“When you write in your profile and include all the facets of yourself, who you are will show through. If you are 70 and look, feel and act 60, then your photographs and what you write should reflect this.

“If you don’t include your activities, hobbies, and interests, how will anyone reading your profile know the age you feel? Don’t just say you feel young or your friends say you look young, prove it with your words that describe your life.”

One woman, Dana, however, thought lying about age is no big deal. She commented, “If you look young, I see nothing wrong with saying maybe you are five to eight-years younger. Catch the fish, then in person, you can disclose your real age if

you like the person. There are worse things to lie about like health issues.”

My position has changed. I was wrong and I think the four women were right.

Senior daters, when writing your dating profile or stating your age, make it your true age. That’s what honest senior daters want to know.

Sailing with the Skip Q&A with Mariner Sea Scout founder Jim “Skip” Wehan

W

hen Jim Wehan was 12 years old, his dad and uncle decided that all three Wehan boys were going to work together and build a 28-foot wooden ship. The model, known as an H28, took a lot of hard work and discipline to put together, but they finally accomplished their shared goal.

That initial foray into woodworking, engineering and the art of learning how to sail turned out to be the spark that ignited what would be a lifelong passion for Wehan.

“We sailed that vessel all the way up until the time I got married,” Wehan, now 80, said. “That’s where it all started.”

As a mathematics teacher at Mission Viejo High School, Wehan parlayed his two passions, education and the sea, to create the Mariner 936 Sea Scout unit 42 years ago. The group, which calls the Dana Point Harbor home, is a year-round co-ed youth organization.

Wehan, known better as “Skip” in the harbor, has volunteered over 10,000 hours of his time to help educate the youth of South Orange County in the ways of sailing. For his years of service, the Dana Point City Council honored Wehan as its most recent volunteer of the quarter.

embark on a nine-day journey with the Sea Scouts that would take them through the Channel Islands to talk about his life, legacy and, of course, the sea.

Dana Point Times: Why did you feel the need to start a Sea Scout unit in Dana Point?

Jim Wehan: When I was teaching at Mission Viejo High School, we had sailing classes. But at the end of the class, the kids wanted to continue sailing and keep the club going. That’s how I found out about the Sea Scouts. I found I could solve the liability issues the school district had by founding the unit. It started out with just a few boats but has grown into this huge fleet that we have now.

What is it you enjoy most about being the Skipper of the Mariner Sea Scouts?

I have totally enjoyed my career working with teenagers. I have been in love with the sea and all the maritime aspects of it ever since I was nine years old. It’s been wonderful to put those two things together. We have just an incredible program.

Why does everyone call you Skip? I’m assuming it’s because of your title?

Well people use Skipper as a kind of more familiar way to say Captain. I found if you just go by Skipper, kids will eventually start calling you Skippy, which I don’t like (laughs). So I said, OK, let’s just call it Skip. I can handle that.

What are the duties of a Sea Scout Skipper?

Overseeing is a major duty at this point.

One of the things we do on a long cruise, for instance, is work with the Ocean Institute to make sure the Spirit of Dana Point is safe and everybody onboard is safe. And I make sure we have a program that’s really fun and instructive for the kids.

What do you want a young person to take away from the Sea Scouting experience?

I want them to have a really good time.

That social aspect of it is really the glue that holds the whole thing together. What we’d like them to learn is they could have as a recreational sport for the rest of their lives. We would hope they would continue to sail and go exploring.

There is also the vocation end to it as well. We’ve got kids that have graduated from the Coast Guard Academy and are actively serving. We’ve got kids now on major ships working their way up the line.

We have kids who have become fishing captains as well.

When you look back at all the time you’ve spent volunteering, is there something you’re most proud of?

I think the most satisfaction comes from the graduates who have come back to tell me what an extremely worthwhile experience it was. How it was so important to their high school years.

After all these years, do you still get excited about going on a long trip like the one you will go on tomorrow?

Oh yeah. It’s fun. And the kids are all really excited about going. It’s been a wonderful career, but I’m still doing a lot of work as the captain for the Ocean Institute and I’m now going down south to work with the San Diego Maritime Museum.

hootout for Soldiers, a 24-hour charity lacrosse exhibition that benefits active-duty and military veterans, is returning to Dana Hills High School this weekend.

Dana Hills will serve as the nationwide event’s California venue from Aug. 11 to Aug. 12. Lacrosse teams from throughout Southern California and as far away as Las Vegas will be in attendance to compete in

24 consecutive one-hour lacrosse matches.

The event will kick off at 7 p.m. on Aug. 11, with a match between veterans and active-duty military and end at 7 p.m. on Aug. 12. A Naval band and color guard will be on hand for the opening ceremonies.

The event has raised over $42,000 as of Aug. 10.

Local surfers shine at U.S. Open of Surfing

W

ith a pulsing tropical swell, a hungry field of international talent and a lot of motivation for South Orange County surfers to make their presence felt, it was a wild ride at the Vans U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach this year.

In the men’s main event, Pat Gudauskas of San Clemente blasted through heat after heat. Making the most of the pristine, summertime conditions in Surf City, he found himself still standing on the final day of the contest with a very real chance of winning it. Unfortunately, in a hard-fought quarterfinal against Brazilian Tomas Hermes, Gudauskas found himself 0.07 of a point away from advancing. For a lot of people, such a skin-of-the-teeth loss would be a heartbreaker, but Gudauskas’s charity organization is called the Positive Vibe Warriors for a reason.

“I came close to the finish I was searching for, but have to stand proud with my result and performance through the event,” said Gudauskas afterward. “I feel ready for a return to the world tour, and when I’m surfing with the backing of everyone out there, it feels like I can do anything I put my mind to…equal fifth and a fire storm brewing for the back half of the season.”

For his effort, Gudauskas climbs 17 spots on the WSL’s Qualifying Series and now sits at 10th on the rankings. San Clemente’s Griffin Colapinto finished equal ninth in the Open and jumped from seventh to fifth in the rankings. lot more, both surfers are well positioned to make a serious run at qualifying for the 2018 WSL Championship Tour.

While Gudauskas and Colapinto were hammering away in the main event, in the junior ranks a number of local surfers were also doing some serious work. Cole Houshmand and Crosby Colapinto, who’ve both enjoyed perhaps the best summer of their young, competitive careers, made the semifinals of the Men’s Pro Junior, while Kade Matson did them one better, making the final and finishing third. As far as rankings on the WSL’s North American junior circuit, Houshmand and Colapinto are tied for fourth, and Made’s just a stone’s throw away at 11th.

On the girls side, Dana Point’s Bella Kenworthy was knocked out in the quarterfinals of the Women’s Pro Junior, while San Clemente’s Samantha Sibley earned herself a spot in the semis but was unable to fight her way out of the stacked heat.

Sibley’s now ranked second on the North American junior circuit, with San Clemente’s Kirra Pinkerton sitting in third.

Later this month, Gudauskas and the QS warriors have opportunities to earn some more valuable qualification points at the Vans Pro in Virginia Beach and the Galicia Pro in Galicia, Spain. The next top-rated WSL QS contest is Cascais Pro in Portugal at the end of September. DP

Last weekend, Herb, as he’s known by friends, was recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Surf Industry Manufacturers Association (SIMA)’s Waterman’s Ball. ist before becoming an integral part of the “Shortboard Revolution” in the late 1960s. He pioneered surf video production and was the first to ride a jet ski in massive surf. He founded the traction company, Astrodeck, which is still a San Clemente institution. And without the aerial innovations of Christian in the early 1990s, surfing as we know it today would be a lot more boring. He’s also an accomplished artist, surf-tripping and working alongside his friend and famed creator Julian Schnabel.

“It’s been a really great ride,” said Fletcher during his acceptance speech.

“I can’t explain how this happened, it just happened…it’s unexplainable.”

“I’m a visionary guy,” added Fletcher.

grom is a young person who is always stoked,” 12-year-old Taylor Stacy said.

With an answer like that, of course Taylor has to be the Grom of the Week. A student at Shorecliffs Middle School and a regular at Lowers, she’s as stoked as they come. She runs with a tight pack of talented, up-and-coming girls in San Clemente, and while she spends as much time in the water as she can, she rips on both snow and skateboards as well.

As far as her surf game goes, Taylor’s all about pushing herself. “I am working on getting more consistent with my blow

tails,” she said.

And when it comes to a dream surf trip, “Australia or Bali,” Taylor said. “I would want to go to either of these places because the waves are good and the water is warm.

I would go with my friends and family.”

Family’s big for Taylor. She lists her folks among her biggest inspirations. She’s also proud of where she comes from. When asked where she sees herself in a few years, she notes, “I want to be living in San Clemente surfing and skateboarding with my friends.”

With stoke like that, there’s no doubt Taylor’s going to go far, whatever dream she ends up chasing. Her favorite quote is telling: “Never give up because that’s what winners do.”
