Five things Dana Point should know this week Congressman Darrell Issa Holds Q&A with Dana Point Residents THE LATEST: Rep. Darrell Issa of the 49th District, spoke to a large group of residents on Aug. 15, during the Men’s Club of Niguel Shores’ monthly meeting.

Inside the room were more than 80 people, including city officials, South Coast Water District directors, Planning Commissioners, Supervisor Lisa Bartlett and residents.

Issa, a Republican who has held his district’s seat for 17 years, talked to the group about a number of topics. For more than an hour, Issa responded to questions from the audience regarding health insurance, San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS), immigration and more.

When asked about SONGS, Issa said it was “a tragedy” in a lot of ways.

“We have to make a decision, we have to move it to a place where the rods can cool and become neutral for the full 10,000 years,” Issa said. “We’re doing that.”

He said they are working to “make sure (there are) multiple places” for permanent storage for the nuclear waste when the rods have sufficiently cooled.

Festival of Whales Foundation Kicks off Logo Design Contest THE LATEST: The Festival of Whales Foundation kicked off its logo design contest on Aug. 15, for the upcoming 47th annual event.

Logo contest submissions must include a representation of a California gray whale, or whales. The contest is open to the public.

The winning logo will appear on Festival of Whales promotional materials, including clothing, posters, flyers, tote bags, digital media advertising, the official event program, event signage, press coverage and more.

The winner will also be invited to ride in a classic car during the Festival of Whales Parade and attend a poster signing at the Street Fair.

“Opening the Festival of Whales Logo Design Contest to the public last year, following a five-year student-only design program, was a great success,” Festival of Whales Foundation co-chair Donna Kalez said in a statement. “The Festival returned to its roots with regard to the creation of a logo by offering the opportunity to artists, hobbyists, students—really any interested whale enthusiast—to have their art chosen to represent this iconic Dana Point event.”

A list of technical criteria as well as instructions for uploading submissions can be found at www.festivalofwhales.com.

WHAT’S NEXT: All submissions must be completed by midnight, Oct. 4. The Foundation board will select five finalists, and one winner will be selected by a public vote via social media during the week of Oct. 5-11.

THE LATEST: Richard Wilson, Ph.D., an urban planning professor at Cal Poly Pomona, discussed different steps City Council can take to improve the city’s parking issues.

One suggestion he made to the Council was to create a parking oversight committee which would review parking reports, respond to issues and special events, promote shared parking and provide information.

The committee could be built of planning commissioners, Dana Point Finance Review Committee members, Dana Point Traffic Improvement Subcommittee members, residents and members from the Dana Point Chamber of Commerce, he said.

Mayor Pro Tem Paul Wyatt said he was more interested in looking at a task force.

Councilman Joe Muller said they need to think about what parking will look like 10 years down the line rather than just two or three years.

“We’re starting to see technology take an even stronger route, I think that needs to be a large part of this conversation,” Muller said.

WHAT’S NEXT: Council directed city staff to return to the first meeting in October with either a resolution creating a new committee or other action ideas.

City to Conduct Sea Level Rise Study THE LATEST: A sea level ride study (SLR) and a local coastal program amendment (LCPA) were approved by City Council during the Aug. 15 meeting.

Council approved a contract with DUDEK (and Moffat & Nichol), an infrastructure firm with a background in developing SLR studies and LCPAs, to address key issues to which the project is focused, according to a staff report.

On May 17, Council advised staff to submit an LCP grant application to the California Coastal Commission (CCC) to fund an update to the city’s LCPA to address the impact of sea level ride and climate change. On Aug. 12, the CCC awarded the city $135,000 for the project, which will cover all costs, according to the report.

The project will include two phases.

First, the SLR study will evaluate and model sea level rise scenarios in conjunction with other coastal flooding factors.

The second phase will identify appropriate policies for inclusion in the Coastal Land Use Plan and standards to be incorporated into the implementation plan, according to

a staff report.

The staff report also said the study and findings will be utilized for an LCPA to create policies and standards to address the risks identified in the assessment and modeling portions of the project.

Multiple public outreach meetings will occur to allow the public to comment on the draft, the staff report said.

“This is an important study that we need,” said Councilman Joe Muller. “We need to focus on saving [Capistrano Beach]; it’s an important part of our community.”

Council Discusses Homeless Task Force’s Charter, Membership THE LATEST: After the Homeless Task Force met for the first time this year last month, Mayor Pro Tem Paul Wyatt said he would like to further discuss the group’s charter. During the City Council meeting on Aug. 15, Council gave their input.

According to the staff report, when the Task Force was created in 2014, a formal resolution was not initiated.

The staff report also said the resolution seeks to formalize the Task Force’s goals and redefine the membership.

“A driving reason to look at membership composition is to ensure that we do not create, either real or perceived, conflicts of interest by including service providers on the Task Force that may desire to respond to future requests for proposals,” the report said.

The proposed membership includes representatives from Dana Point City Council, Dana Point Chamber of Commerce, county of Orange, California State Parks, Dana Point Harbor Merchant’s Association, Dana Point Planning Commission and South Coast Water District.

Invited stakeholders who may participate as non-voting members could include Families Forward, Families Assistance Ministries, Mercy House, Orange County Rescue Mission, Friendship Shelter, Capo Beach Church, St. Edward the Confessor Church, Gloria Dei Church and South Shores Church.

The resolution also establishes a regular meeting time and general operating procedures.

WHAT’S NEXT: Adopting a resolution is the next step to formalize the existing collaboration between stakeholders currently serving on the Task Force. The existing Task Force will provide feedback during the upcoming meeting before it’s brought back to Council on Tuesday, Sept. 19.

A New Promotion Mark Denny Discusses Role as Dana Point City Manager

M

ark Denny can be found walking the trails of the Dana Point Headlands as well as other paths on the weekend with his family before breakfast. If fellow runners notice a few residents stopping to congratulate Denny, it’s most likely due to his recent promotion.

On July 18, Denny, former Deputy City Manager for Dana Point, was appointed as the new City Manager in a 5-0 vote during a City Council meeting. However, City Attorney Patrick Munoz said Council voted 3-2 in favor of hiring Denny for the role.

As City Manager, he will be meshing his former responsibilities with new tasks, including implementing City Council policy decisions, initiating all intergovernmental operations of the city, directing various departments and providing guidance in the implementation of the mandates of the Council.

Although taking on the role of City Manager transpired quickly, Denny said he’s looking forward to communicating with residents, visitors and businesses in town to continue to make the city successful.

“I think we have a real opportunity to tell more of our story and get folks to understand what it is we do, what it is we’re going to do, what it is we can or cannot

City Council Approves Youth Board Appointments The City Council appointed 13 board members and four members-at-large to the Dana Point Youth Board during its Aug. 15, meeting.

The Dana Point Youth Board was established in 2003 to stimulate active community involvement in the city’s youth and give local high school students a voice in the methods of making positive change in the city, according to a staff report.

Prior to his positions as Deputy City Manager and City Manager with the Dana Point City Council, he has held other versatile leadership roles, including Chief Operating Officer for the county of Orange for three years, the Director of OC Parks for more than six years and has also worked for private companies.

Denny said he knew he wanted to be involved with politics after completing an internship in Washington D.C. that got him interested in policy. Also having enjoyed the ocean since childhood, combining the two interests for a role on Dana Point’s City Council seemed like a natural fit.

He jumped into his first role in California government when he was offered a position to work with former Assemblyman William J. Campbell while he was on the Orange County Board of Supervisors.

“I had a great time; it was fun to learn the county with him,” Denny said.

With the lead role unfilled, it left a question if someone in the city would fill the position or whether Council would hire from outside city staff.

“It got me thinking about my life, my career, and how I’d be able to be a lot closer to the services that we provide people,” Denny said. “When the opportunity came to work for the city, I jumped at it because it was getting back to the things I love—parks, community services and public works. It was with an organization of people I knew from interacting in the Harbor, and I had a great deal of respect for them.”

He said when he thought about the new position, and declining it, he didn’t feel comfortable about “the unknown.”

“I talked to my wife about it, she kind of helped me through it thinking ‘is somebody else going to do a better job than you?’ I said I don’t know because I don’t know who else that is. She said ‘are you confident that you can do a great job?’ Yes I am, then she said ‘why would you bet on someone else and that unknown,” Denny said.

Denny wants residents to know he has an open door policy and looks forward to making the city the best it can be.

“I think continuous improvement is important for all businesses,” he said.

After Denny was hired as City Manager, he appointed Matt Sinacori to City Engineer and Director of Public Works.

Previously, as Deputy City Manager, his role was to manage the public works department. Currently, the city has no plans to fill the Deputy City Manager role. DP

Cleanups Planned for Local Beaches Surfrider South Orange County has announced their beach cleanup schedule through December.

In Dana Point, cleanups are scheduled at the Harbor near the Richard Henry Dana statue on Saturday, Aug. 19, from 10 a.m.-noon.

In San Clemente, cleanups are scheduled at the pier on Saturday, Aug. 19, and Saturday, Aug. 26, from 8-11 a.m. They are also set for each Saturday in the month of September as well as select Saturdays in the months of October and November, including Oct. 7, 14 and 28, and Nov. 4, 11 and 18, from 8-10 a.m.

All attendees are encouraged to bring their own gloves.

arking in Dana Point is a contentious, difficult topic. Nevertheless, the issue must be addressed now, during development and redevelopment of Town Center/Lantern Village, Doheny Village and the Harbor, not after completion.

The 2008 Town Center Plan specified the use developer fees to acquire public parking facilities prior to development.

Unfortunately, that did not happen. The proposed Doheny Village Plan calls for high density housing but also rejects public parking lots. Eventually, the plan says, neighborhood streets will be built.

Park there.

Adding to the urgency of our problem: • Dana Point is not Berkeley; mass transit alternatives don’t exist here • The Department of Transportation forecasts more registered vehicles every year through 2050 • The number of registered vehicles has been exceeding Caltrans’ projections each year • More adult children live at home meaning more cars per household • To afford housing takes more roommates meaning more cars per household • Both residents and visitors drive to destinations in Dana Point • Most Dana Point residents work outside Dana Point and drive to work • Dana Point lacks affordable housing, meaning, our local workers drive here

I am writing this letter to express my sadness over the decision of the Planning Commission to OK the massive development at 34466 Via Verde after the objections of the entire neighborhood have been voiced. Not one person from the community spoke up in favor of this development. All of the citizens who attended— whom represented many more that could not attend—objected to the massive development because it would greatly reduce the quality of life in the community.

The other approach, “Don’t Stay Too Long,” relies on management of existing parking. The city’s parking consultant’s report says: “[N]ormally parking reform accompanies a new vision, including lower (or eliminated) minimum parking requirements, more shared parking and parking management.” The report tells us to impose time limits, vary parking fees. This will improve efficiency through turnover of the most popular spaces. The

Prior to the commission hearing from the public, a representative from the Planning Commission gave the pitch for the development, and the woman used a photo of my property to make the case that the development would be similar to other properties on the street. This is false, and I resent a city official making this claim.

My property is a duplex and currently has four adults living there with two, two-car garages. The proposed development is much larger than my property.

The city of Dana Point and the needs of the community have changed greatly in 40 years. Yet the Planning Commission is using the excuse of outdated zoning rules to push through this development over the objec-

problem is this virtually assures increased traffic from people driving around looking for spaces. Short parking times also force those looking for longer parking periods or cheaper alternatives into the closest residential neighborhood.

The report also suggests shared valet parking. But unless businesses have enough dedicated spaces, valet programs guarantee neighborhoods become the parking lots.

Another alternative? Expand the number of leased parking spaces and improve signage so people can find them. The problem is, currently leased spaces are not convenient. They are sprinkled here and there throughout the city. Available dates and times differ. Do we want to send drivers on a scavenger hunt for a parking space only to find they are too late or too early to use it?

Parking planning and development is a real necessity that is not going away anytime soon, even with the emerging development of autonomous vehicles. Now is the time to pick an approach and work toward its implementation. Doing nothing only perpetuates the problems and increases the costs. Local authority should represent the majority, not the self-interest of a single property owner who does not care about the long-term negative impact of a huge development, including crime, which is a problem in our city. This development would not be approved in Laguna or Rancho Santa Margarita, and I would make the case that that is why crime is much lower in those communities.

At the Movies: ‘Wind River’ is a Fine Addition for Director Sheridan

ith another untimely release date, and only a week after Kathryn Bigelow’s Detroit, Taylor Sheridan’s Wind River comes to theaters with a political theme a little too close to home. Sheridan is the TV actorturned-screenwriter behind the critical hits Sicario (2015) and Hell or High Water (2016), and makes his directorial debut here. Recruiting Marvel actors Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen and Jon Bernthal as his stars, the drama/thriller is still a quality input for Sheridan’s resume.

In the middle of snowy Wyoming, local game tracker Cory Lambert (Renner) discovers the dead body of his friends’ teenage daughter (Kelsey Asbille) right on the edge of the Wind River Indian Reservation. DOLPHINS FOOTBALL PREVIEW have a new look on that side of the ball in 2017.

Just like the offense, the defense underwent a change as John Donnelly was brought in as the team’s new defensive coordinator.

Skinner said under Donnelly, the Dolphins defense will be much more aggressive and play with more speed than in years past.

Anchoring the middle of the defense will be the linebacker tandem of Julian Casillas, a three-year starter, and Lua Mu Poching.

Bortnick and Steele will pull double-duty on the defensive line, and Polish transfer Kuba Rekawek will be looking to make an impact after a standout performance in training camp.

“We’re playing a lot tougher style of football. It’s always fun and physical and we all really want to play hard,” Steele, who will play defensive end, said.

Revamped Dana Hills football team readies for 2017 season

Phil Skinner has been around the Dana Hills High School football program for 11 years. In that time, he’s served as coach of the offensive line, strength and conditioning coordinator and assistant head coach.

He’s been a constant presence in a program that has undergone three coaching changes since 2006. He’s been there for the good times and the rough patches.

Now entering his third year at the helm as head coach, Skinner looked back at the program’s history for inspiration heading into the 2017 season.

He remembered back to the successful Dolphins teams of old and recognized a common theme on offense—they all relied heavily on the run.

He knew his 2017 roster would be full of versatile skill players with the ability to run and make plays. His offensive line would not be the biggest, but they possessed speed, agility and toughness.

Skinner decided it was time for a change.

The Dolphins, who have won just one game in the past two years, went through an overhaul on both sides of the ball this offseason.

Ready to meet the challenge of learning a new playbook was a large group of return-

ing players that have three years or more of starting experience.

Run, Dolphins, run There is nothing a high school football coach values more than time. Whether it’s preparing for a game, running through practice or dealing with the hectic day-today schedule that comes with the job, every hour is thought of as a precious resource.

Skinner applies that same mentality to the football field. Time, or, more accurately, time of possession, is king.

The Dolphins want to control the clock, and tempo, in 2017. They plan on doing that by implementing a run-heavy offense. Bob Sykes, a veteran coach of the Central Coast who also coached at University of Nevada, Reno and is a proponent of the Wing-T offense, was brought on as offensive coordinator.

The Wing-T involves multiple backs in the backfield, which plays to the Dolphins’ strength.

Leading the way will be senior quarterback and three-year starter Corey Cisowski.

Surrounding him is a stable of playmakers, including senior Gavin Papagallo, Brandon Oswald, Jack Oliver and Jake Baldiviez. All of the Dolphins backs, including fullback Matthew Lua Mu Poching, will be utilized early and often in games.

That’s not to say the Dolphins aren’t planning on throwing the ball. In Cisowski, they have a rising signal caller that has improved every season of his high school career. Last year he threw for 2,099 yards, 20 touchdowns and 16 interceptions.

“The offense is really shaping up well.

We’re implementing the new running attack, which is a really balanced attack that will open up the passing game for me as well,” Cisowski said.

But the skill players are only half the equation.

The Dolphins’ offensive line will be key

to the new philosophy’s success. Skinner stressed the need for his blockers to be mobile, as well as physical.

“We’re excited about the fact we are going to win the war of attrition up front and control the clock,” Skinner said.

Senior three-year starter and center Tommy Bortnick was more than up for the challenge of leading the line through the transition period.

“The new offense is really fun because it’s a ton of misdirection stuff,” Bortnick said. “The defense never really knows what’s coming so it’s fun to get some big hits and blocks.”

Joining Bortnick on the offensive line will be four-year starter and tackle Hunter Steele and junior Adrian Sword.

“They learned under fire. They’ve been taking their lumps and paying their dues,” Skinner said of his senior class. “Their confidence level is pretty high right now.”

The upperclassmen have been waiting for the moment to show what they can do with experience on their side, and now it’s that time.

“Since sophomore year it’s all been working up to this point,” Cisowski said. “With two years of experience under our belt, there are not a lot of other teams like us. We’re really excited to leave our mark.”

FIVE to watch OFFENSE COREY CISOWSKI

QB (No. 14) SR. Cisowski made strides as the Dolphins quarterback his junior season, and is poised to get even better this year. Cisowski has added size to his frame, worked hard on his accuracy and attended several quarterback camps across the country this summer. Cisowski is a three-year starter and two-sport athlete in baseball.

TOMMY BORTNICK

C (No. 62) SR. The center has to be the leader of the offensive line. In Bortnick, the Dolphins believe they have their guiding influence. Bortnick carries a 4.6 GPA, and will be tasked with clearing the way for the Dolphins run-heavy offense this season. Bortnick is a three-year starter and will also play on the defensive line.

GAVIN PAPAGALLO

RB/WR (No. 2) SR. Papagallo is one of the Dolphins’ quickest, and toughest, players. He is also versatile.

The Dolphins plan on using him all over the field, and will be a focal point of the offense whether he is carrying the ball or catching it. Look for Papagallo to also play on defense as well.

HUNTER STEELE

T (No. 71) SR. Standing at 6-foot-2-inches, Steele is one of the bigger players that will be playing both sides of the line for the Dolphins. The coaching staff loves the physicality and experience Steele, a four-year starter, brings to the line. At tackle, Steele will be tasked with protecting, and leading the way for, the Dolphins backs.

BRANDON OSWALD

WR/RB (No. 85) SR. Oswald is among the team’s fastest players, and will be a primary ball carrier. He is on the tall side, standing at 6-foot tall, and possesses all the speed and strength necessary.

Of the many backs that will be flying around in the Dolphins backfield, Oswald will be a regular number called.

FIVE to watch DEFENSE JULIAN CASILLAS

LB (No. 3) SR. Casillas is a three-year starter and one of the leaders of the defense. At middle linebacker, he earned All-South Coast League honors as a sophomore. That alone should suggest Casillas is poised for a big senior campaign. He will also play on offense on the line and at tight end.

MATTHEW LUA MU POCHING

LB (No. 8) JR. Lua Mu Poching will help Casillas anchor the defense playing linebacker. The Dolphins have a new defensive coordinator in John Donnelly, and coach Phil Skinner says Lua Mu Poching’s physical style of play fits perfectly with the new scheme. Lua Mu Poching will also get time at fullback.

BLAKE RUBIO

SS (No. 23) SR. Rubio, a three-year starter, is among the more versatile players on the Dolphins’ defense. He will play at strong safety as well as at outside linebacker. Rubio has the speed to cover a lot of ground, and is also a hard hitter, according to Skinner.

JAYDEN SMITH

CB (No. 9) SR. Smith is one of the team’s unquestioned leaders, according to Skinner. The 5-foot11-inch cornerback will be tasked with matching up against opposing team’s top receiving threats.

KUBA REKAWEK

DL (No. 77) JR. A transfer from Poland, Rekawek has made an immediate impact on his teammates and coaches alike in his first year on campus.

Rekawek stands at 6-foot-4-inches and weighs 210 pounds, and figures to be a physical presence at defensive end. He will also play on the offensive line.

Coach: Jeff Turley 2016 Record: 4-6 (1-4 Sunset League) 2016 vs. DH: Win, 34-14 Season Outlook: Marina will return impact starters on an offense that scored at least 21 points eight times last season.

Marina returns its starting quarterback in Ian Green and its top running back, Blaine Riederich, which is a good combo to have.

Green threw for an average of 149.6 yards per game last year and Riederich rushed for 599 yards and five touchdowns.

Linebacker Seth Bontrager, who had 58 tackles and two sacks as a junior, returns on defense.

Location: Dana Hills Time: 7 p.m.

Coach: Pete Karavedas 2016 Record: 6-5 (2-3 Freeway League) 2016 vs. DH: Win, 34-17 Season Outlook: Sunny Hills’ game plan last season was to run, and then run some more.

The Lancers averaged just over 328 yards per game on the ground last season, and with returning senior running back Alex Jung in the mix, there’s no reason to believe Sunny Hills won’t rely on the run again. Jung ran for 1,540 yards last season and scored 18 touchdowns.

Sunny Hills will have its hands full in league play competing against La Habra, but should contend for a playoff berth.

Location: Pacifica Time: 7 p.m.

Coach: Vinnie Lopez 2016 Record: 6-5 (3-2 Empire League) 2016 vs. DH: Win, 49-31 Season Outlook: All signs point toward Pacifica contending for an Empire League title in 2017.

The Mariners return a very strong core of players at key positions, led by senior dual-threat quarterback Ben Jefferson. Jefferson passed for 2,124 yards and 28 touchdowns while rushing for an additional 1,067 yards and 12 scores on the ground as a junior.

His favorite target, receiver Matt Moslenko, returns.

Pacifica’s defensive front should be strong with the return of linebacker Isaak Togia and defensive lineman Dylan Pederson.

Location: Dana Hills Time: 7 p.m.

Coach: Ramsey Lambert 2016 Record: 4-6 (1-4 Ocean League) 2016 vs. DH: Win, 53-36 Season Outlook: Santa Monica fielded a young squad last season, which means they have plenty of returners with experience in 2017.

Santa Monica has multiple players playing both sides of the ball, and returns eight starters on offense and nine on defense.

Leading the charge will be receiver/linebacker Leo Reynoso, running back/linebacker Tony Dancy and defensive end Elijah Moul.

Location: Garden Grove High School Time: 7 p.m.

Coach: Carl Agnew 2016 Record: 6-5 (3-2 Garden Grove League) 2016 vs. DH: Loss, 47-13 Season Outlook: Los Amigos was a very run-heavy team in 2016, but with the departure of dual-threat quarterback Steven Hernandez to graduation, the Lobos will need to find a new identity this year.

The Lobos return just five players, but seem to have found two backs that can replicate Hernandez’s production. Brian Pachecho and Joseph Garcia are slated to be the team’s go-to running backs.

El Toro returns All-league selection Cooper Jones at quarterback.

Jones passed for 2,893 yards and 22 touchdowns as a junior. Jones’ favorite target, receiver Austin Derrico, returns.

Offense will not be the problem for the Chargers, but they will need to up their defense, which allowed nearly 32 points per game in 2016, if they are to make another playoff push.

Location: Dana Hills Time: 7 p.m.

Coach: Kurt Westling 2016 Record: 3-7 (1-3 Sea View League) 2016 vs. DH: Win, 35-21 Season Outlook: Aliso Niguel will rely on the arm of senior quarterback Nate Sorensen this season. Sorensen averaged 200 yards through the air and threw 23 touchdowns to just seven interceptions as a junior. The good news for the Wolverines is receiver Tyler Jones, who caught 14 of those scoring throws, returns to complete a solid tandem.

Scoring points has never been the problem for Aliso Niguel, a team that averaged 26.5 points per contest in 2016. They will have to keep other offenses in check.

Location: CVHS Time: 7 p.m.

Coach: Ernst Bucher 2016 Record: 13-2 (4-0 Sea View League) 2016 vs. DH: Win, 43-10 Season Outlook: Capistrano Valley enters the new year with plenty of momentum and good vibes, having reached the CIF-SS Division 5 Championship game one year ago.

The Cougars will be without standout quarterback Kevin Brown, who graduated, but they return their lead running back Kian Assarpour and a stable of solid receivers on offense.

Junior Nathan Manning appears to be Brown’s successor at quarterback.

Location: Dana Hills Time: 7 p.m.

Coach: Gus Martinez and Ed DeAvila 2016 Record: 4-6 (1-4 Freeway League) 2016 vs. DH: Win, 50-14 Season Outlook: The Indians return depth and experience at key positions.

Junior quarterback Gavin Klepper played in every game under center as a sophomore, and will look to improve his 10:10 touchdown-to-interception ratio from one year ago.

Klepper will have returning 6-foot2-inch receiver Jarod Martinez and Adam Gonzalez to throw to.

Fullerton has held its own in the competitive Freeway League last season. Four of the five league games the Indians played in were decided by 14 points or less, but all four games resulted in a loss.

Coach: Mike Maceranka 2016 Record: 6-5 (2-2 Sea View League) 2016 vs. DH: Win, 46-27 Season Outlook: Laguna Hills treaded water in the Sea View League last season, placing third and claiming a spot in the CIF-SS Division 8 playoffs.

With quarterback Ross Leigber returning, the Hawks could make some noise and move up the league standings this year.

Graduation hit the Hawks hard in the offseason, but they return key pieces on the line, including tackle Nolan Hegidius and center Mark Zuvich.

An Older Book, but Still Relevant to Recent News

W

ith Los Angeles winning the 2028 summer Olympics, naturally the topic of government-funded stadiums, arenas and venues will come up.

In their revised and expanded 2008 edition, authors Neil deMause and Joanna Cagan address this topic in Field of Schemes: How the Great Stadium Swindle Turns Public Money into Private Profit. I must admit up front I was against any public funding for these monstrous cathedrals before reading the book. However, after reading this book, I was even more incensed and can no longer support public funding in any way, if the stadium is for private use and profit, and that includes if the stadium is used a few times a year for charitable events.

Cagan and deMause trace the last

quarter century of owners complaining that they need new stadiums for a variety of reasons, especially if fans want a winning team. The authors go on to outline the owners’ strategy to get these stadiums, including moving the team to a city, which will give them a shiny, new venue.

If you ever believed in a free market system, this book will quickly disassociate yourself of that BOOK TALK idea. Worse are the lies,

30 years to pay off its Olympic Stadium.

Seattle was paying off the Kingdome while covering the cost of a new ballpark. Even worse are the stadiums like Montreal, which are no longer used and have a roof that doesn’t work. Then there is the New York/New Jersey saga, which resulted in two new baseball stadiums and a new football stadium, costing more than a combined $3 billion for stadiums, garages and needed infrastructure. At least $1 billion of that amount was covered by tax payers for the parking garages and other infrastructure, which unfortunately is money tax payers will never get revenue from. Then, there are the sagas of Cleveland, Baltimore, San Diego, Minnesota and Indianapolis, to name a few, that are mentioned in the

book.

It has been almost 10 years since this volume was written, but not much has changed. Since that time, deMause has maintained a blog, www.fieldofschemes. com that chronicles the continuing mess that is public-financed stadiums. Some of the schemes are sad, some are funny and some are just outright chicanery.

Although the Dana Point Library does not own this title, patrons can request this book though interlibrary loan. Dana Point Resident Showcases Work to Festival of the Arts for 25th Year

P

hotographer and Dana Point resident Christopher Bliss brings the grandiose New York skyline and intricate architecture of Europe to the Festival of Arts in Laguna Beach with his display of photographs.

The festival’s long history of showcasing work from Orange County’s esteemed artists led Bliss to apply as an exhibitor 25 years ago. Bliss said artists undergo a selective jurying process that requires them to submit samples of their work to be reviewed by a panel of judges.

In his quarter of a century history of participation in the festival, one theme runs throughout his displays—New York City.

Growing up in Long Island, Bliss walked around the bustling city with a camera in his hand. From the towering skyline to bright lights on city streets, Bliss’s fascination with capturing the heart of New York took root.

With his permanent residence now in Dana Point, Bliss continues to return to New

York City at least four times a year to document the city’s changes through his camera lens. With skyscrapers constantly joining the skyline, Bliss said there is always something new that captures his attention.

“The whole city has changed dramatically,” Bliss said. “Every time I go there’s something new.”

His photography of “the city that never sleeps” has accumulated in a series of photo books and calendars. Bliss said he is currently working on his next New York photo book that will be released sometime in 2018.

Bliss’s display at this year’s Festival of Arts will feature one of his signature New York pieces as well as pieces that span the European continent. At least once a year Bliss leaves Dana Point to take photos of international architecture. Bliss said through his photography career he has visited almost every major city in Europe.

In large four-foot-five-inch frames, Bliss said his exhibit displays photographs of his travels that include Istanbul, Venice and

Rome.

“I usually try to find pictures that have the most appeal and that I think most people will react to,” Bliss said.

Festival of Arts provides Bliss with the opportunity to speak with Southern Californians about his work. As a long time exhibitor, Bliss said the reaction each year from attendees has been wonderful.

“Whenever I’m there, people come up to me and ask all kinds of questions about my photography and the work that I have hanging up there,” Bliss said. “It’s a good place to meet people and talk about my work.”

More than 100 local artists, including Bliss, will continue to showcase their work at Festival of Arts until Thursday, Aug. 31.

Attendees can purchase artwork, participate in workshops and listen to live music.

Admission prices vary by day and begin at $8 for general admission and $5 for students and seniors.

Dana Hills Plays Host to Shootout for Soldiers DANA POINT TIMES

F

or a third straight year the City of Dana Point played host to the Southern California lacrosse world as Dana Hills High School served as the site of Shootout for Soldiers, a popular charity lacrosse event.

The event, which ran for 24 consecutive hours starting Aug. 11, raised money for local and national military and veteran organizations.

The event kicked off with a United States Navy band and color guard, which was followed by a game between activeduty service people and veterans.

Over 1,100 lacrosse players participated in 24, one-hour matches. Roughly 6,500 people attended the event over the course of the weekend.

The event raised $34,500, according to organizer and Dana Hills coach Chris Iltis.

“We were really proud of the event this year and it was sold out. We had teams

on a waiting list so we think we can really build on that going forward,” Iltis said.

“The event was a really powerful message to our players that they are part of something bigger than themselves and it’s important to give back to those who sacrifice so much.” DP

Kolohe Andino earns career-best third place finish at the Billabong Pro Tahiti

Dino Andino’s exuberance in watching his son, Kolohe, pull off a last-second heat win at the Billabong Pro Tahiti reverberated around the crowded Teahupoo channel. Fists raised to the blue South Pacific sky, he’d just watched his son graduate from benign T Street to contending at one of the world’s premier reef breaks.

Last Friday, Aug. 11, the 14-day waiting period for the Billabong Pro Tahiti, a WSL Championship Tour contest, kicked off.

Rather than traveling with an entourage of coaches, trainers and board caddies, Kolohe (whose name translates to “Little Rascal”) kept it simple. It was just him and his old man.

Facing an adverse surf outlook filled with lots of wind and rain, contest organizers made the decision to run on the first day of the waiting period and jam through the entire contest in three days. In the history of the world tour, that’s never been done, and for those competing in the iconic contest, it required an extra dose of focus. Luckily, as he’s aged, matured and his goatee has grown longer, Kolohe seems to have focus in abundance.

After putting his head down and battling through the first two days of the contest,

the proverbial “morning of the final” broke under a nasty, gray sky.

“It’s pretty ugly out there,” remarked WSL Commissioner Kieren Perrow after his dawn patrol surf session on the shallow reef. “But we’re expecting things to clear up and for a new swell to start to pulse in.”

Undaunted by the weather, Kolohe battled forward. In the quarterfinals, he stayed busy against hard-charging Brazilian Wiggolly Dantes. While Kolohe hunted down smaller, inside waves and slowly built on his score line, Dantes held on to priority for most of the heat (meaning that he had the pick of any wave he wanted when it hit the lineup). With three minutes left on the clock, Wiggolly made a critical mistake. Taking off on a sub-par wave, he handed priority over to Kolohe, who spent the rest of the heat playing defense and keeping his rival off any potentially highscoring rides.

“That was a hard heat. Luckily, Wiggolly made that mistake at the end and I got an 8…I’ve still got more to give,” added Kolohe.

This is where the whole “like father, like son” cliché comes into play. In his heyday, Dino was one of the fiercest competitors on the burgeoning pro scene and a former national champion. As they

say, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

In the semifinals, Kolohe was matched up against Brazilian world champion Gabriel Medina. Kolohe is way too professional to say so, but they don’t really enjoy each other’s company.

“I’m sneaky confident,” he joked afterward. “I’ve done well in all the conditions, both when it’s small and when it’s big.”

inner of the Boys 12 and under division at the recent Western Surfing Association (WSA) contest at San Onofre’s Trail 6, Makai Bray is enjoying every bit of the summer surf season.

The first event of the WSA season, the 10-year-old regular-footer got on a roll early and never looked back.

A regular at the surf spots around San Clemente, he’s spent his summer logging all-day sessions at Uppers, camping and fishing with his family, and of course, winning a contest or two.

Already rocking a Quiksilver sticker on the nose of his board, Bray’s been working closely with Quik’s team manager and talent scout Chad Wells.

He’s also been spending a lot of time working with his coach, Neco Padaratz.

neither was going to give an inch to the other. Medina ended up getting the better of Kolohe, who finished the contest with a very respectable third place.

“Obviously, I would have liked to have gone a little further, but I’m happy with my result,” said Kolohe afterward. “This is my best result here at Teahupoo, so I’m stoked and I can hopefully carry some momentum back home with me.”

For the effort Kolohe now sits just outside the WSL’s Top 10. Ranked 11th in the world after the Billabong Pro Tahiti, the next contest on the schedule is the Hurley Pro at Lower Trestles. With a head full of confidence, a heart full of drive and the comfort of surf in front of a hometown crowd, Kolohe could get on a roll at Lowers. He’s long overdue to win the contest.

A former world tour competitor, Padaratz has relocated from his native Brazil to San Clemente where he’s helping kids like Bray achieve their dreams.

“I’m so proud to coach a future champ,” said Padaratz of his relationship with Bray.

The feeling appears to be mutual as the two are starting to see some great results from their efforts.

The WSA season is officially underway, and the NSSA season isn’t far off. Good luck to Bray and all the groms. DP
