Five things Dana Point should know this week Ocean Institute Holds Solar Eclipse Viewing Event THE LATEST: The morning may have started out cloudy, but the sky quickly cleared in time for 150 guests to watch the solar eclipse at the Ocean Institute.

On Aug. 21, the Ocean Institute opened their doors early to invite guests to watch as the moon passed between the earth and the sun.

That morning, a line stretched in front of the building with guests eagerly waiting to head inside and get their eclipse glasses.

Some guests said they stood in line since 6 a.m. to ensure they would get a pair.

Max, 9, of Capistrano Beach, said he was excited for the event.

He, along with other guests, had made their own type of viewing box made out of a cereal box.

Max’s mom, Susanne Dachgruber, didn’t have to travel far for the event, but said it was something that couldn’t be missed.

As the eclipse approached, the dock filled with guests of all ages. Nathan Taxel, director of outdoor education for the Ocean Institute, continuously walked around with other viewing devices and answered questions.

“It puts a lot of things into perspective when you see nature do something seemingly impossible,” Dachgruber said.

Max, smiled as he watched through the glasses.

“It was really cool,” he said. “It looked like something round with a giant bite out of it.”

City Staff Provide Development Update, Present Micro Website THE LATEST: City staff presented a new website that allows users to see which sites are currently in development stages during their monthly development update Dana Point Times August 25-31, 2017

According to the staff report, the city is primarily built-out and most of the new development is on parcels of land that was prepared for or previously developed.

The city’s Economic Development division created a micro website with targeted messages specifically for investors, visitors and new residents.

“There is an interest in information related to new development in town,” the report said.

The website has an interactive development pipeline which communicates information about new projects in a geo-spatial manner.

According to the map, some projects under review include a resort hotel at Cannons, a bed and breakfast near Chart House, the former Dana Marina Inn and a site off Calle La Primavera. The site also shows potential development, approved projects and projects under construction.

One update, that was not discussed because it’s currently in the appeal process, is the Wave Resort.

City staff said it would be inappropriate for Council to discuss the project during the meeting because of the appeal.

The development update also included a zoning code clean-up update.

According to the staff report, periodic zoning ordinance “clean ups” are a management practice utilized to ensure the city’s zoning ordinance provisions are clear and consistent with state law. City staff anticipates bringing an update to the Council by the close of the year.

WHAT’S NEXT: The staff report indicates city staff has been working on updating the Historical Resources Inventory and

Police Chief Gives Monthly Update at City Council THE LATEST: Dana Point Police Chief Lt. Russ Chilton will give a monthly report to City Council regarding crime statistics, events police services have been involved in and more.

In the report for August, Chilton presented crime statistics for July, which included two counts of robbery, five aggravated assaults, two residential burglaries, five vehicle burglaries, one commercial burglary, seven grand thefts, 19 petty thefts, 16 cases of vandalism, five stolen vehicles and two recovered stolen vehicles.

“Every city is unique to what they want to see [in the report,]” Chilton said. “I look forward to working with the city and Council to see what they want.”

One incident Chilton discussed involved deputies arresting a suspected drug dealer and seized 11.9 grams of methamphetamine, 24.5 grams of “Grey Death,” or heroin mixed with fentanyl, and 14.5 grams of “black tar heroin.”

At the time of the meeting, he said the criminal case against the man was pending.

WHAT’S NEXT: Chilton said he would give these reports during the second meeting of every month.

“This is the beginning of something I hope we can build on,” Chilton said. “It

THE LATEST: Registration for Relay for Life Dana Point-Laguna Beach is open.

Relay for Life is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society where team members take turns walking around a designated path for 24 hours. The event also remembers loved ones whom have lost their battle to cancer and honors survivors with different laps and ceremonies.

The event is scheduled for Sept. 16-17 in Lantern Bay Park.

The opening ceremony begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 16, and the first lap, the survivors lap, will begin around 10:30 a.m.

Closing ceremonies will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 17.

Dale Velzy Classic and Luau Scheduled for Sept. 16 THE LATEST: The 28th annual Dale Velzy Classic and Luau is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 16, at Doheny State Beach.

The annual event is hosted by the Doheny Longboard Surfing Association and will feature a beer garden and different surf contests.

According to the Surfing Association’s website, the event is family-friendly and is a way to celebrate Dale’s life and enjoyment of surfing.

There will be live music, surfboard raffles and more.

Contests begin at 8 p.m. and the luau will begin at 3 p.m.

Space is limited and signing up is recommended.

WHAT’S NEXT: Entry fee for the longboard surf contest is $75, tandem teams are $120 per team. The surf contest includes a T-shirt and a luau dinner.

There will be free admission to the luau area. The dinner is $15 per person.

Back in Session New year brings changes to Dana Point schools

ummer may not be over seasonally, but for Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD) students, the bells have rung.

In two of the Dana Point schools, there have been some changes, but principals are looking forward to the new school year.

At R.H. Dana Elementary Science and Technology Academy, many students walked up in white shirts adorned with a new logo.

“This year, we’re very excited to launch voluntary school uniforms,” said Christina Portillo, principal.

Students are encouraged to wear Tshirts and cardigans which display the school’s logo.

But, this isn’t the only change students are seeing.

R.H. Dana was one of the schools selected by CUSD to go through an “elementary school reimaging process.” The process began after discussing how to reinvigorate under-enrolled schools in the district.

Over the past year, teachers at R.H. Dana have been exploring what the academy could look like, and what they would need to change in order to accommodate that vision. Part of those plans included creating a three-year plan, meeting with an advertising agency, creating a new logo and writing a new mission statement.

“We’re preparing kids for the future with an inquiry-based curriculum that fosters curiosity and technology-enabled problem-solving,” Portillo previously told the Dana Point Times. “Ultimately what we want to look at is creating these science experiments to find real world solu-

tions, and using that technology to support real world research results.”

Portillo also said with the school’s connection to the Ocean Institute and the ocean nearby, it was a natural fit to focus on science.

Some additions students may start seeing include a Design Lab. “The Design Lab will be a place for students to extend their projects to a higher level with hands-on learning through the use of a 3-D printer, mini iPads, green screens and filming, as well as coding and robotics,” Portillo said.

Portillo added the school will be partnering with Trash for Teaching to provide an extensive supply of repurposed materials for students to use for designing their creative and innovative projects.

garden shed was built to store supplies and planter boxes were weeded and painted.

“The gardens will be used by classrooms to provide outdoor learning lessons on flowers, vegetables, fruits, native plants and enhance science connections such as the life cycle,” Portillo said.

Last year, students began using Chromebooks, including the younger students.

Palisades Elementary to focus on writing At Palisades Elementary School, Principal Curt Visca said the focus for students—kindergarten through fifthgrade—will be to become better writers.

“Teachers will have writing prompts for students and provide guidance and advice to students throughout the school year,” Visca said.

Information will be shared with parents on the school’s social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Pintrest.

“We will also continue to provide a fun and encouraging learning environment for students through the Wave Morning Show, Friday Flag ceremonies, Wave of the Week student recognition and Funky Fridays,” Visca said.

New Principal at Dana Hills High School Across the city, older students walked around Dana Hills High School during lunchtime. Inside, a new face smiled as the high schoolers moved in the hallway before the bell rang.

In July, Joshua Porter was hired as the Dana Hills High School principal after the previous principal, Jason Allemann, left for a new role in Laguna Beach.

“It’s going great,” Porter said about his new position. “Everyone has been so welcoming, not just the staff and students, but the community as a whole.”

Porter previously held the position of Carlsbad High School’s principal, but has

lived in Orange County most of his life.

“I was working for Tustin Unified School District and about three years ago, I was very fortunate to be offered the opportunity to be principal at Carlsbad High School,” Porter said.

He said, initially, it wasn’t in his plans to become a high school principal. His background began with political science.

“I used to volunteer at a school in Tustin; I would help in physical education.

I helped with small group readings with kids too,” Porter said. “The principal at the time suggested, ‘why don’t you become a teacher?’ I was volunteering, I felt like it was a good purpose.”

He said he enjoyed volunteering because of the things he was provided as a kid.

“It didn’t necessarily click at the time that that was the path I was going to go down, but it was definitely something I enjoyed and it felt natural,” Porter said.

“Not so much what I was giving, but how the kids were growing and to watch them become young adults in such a short period of time.”

From there, he transitioned into teaching.

He said he’s been a fan of using technology in classrooms to help support student learning and provide experiences they may not otherwise be provided.

His experience with technology eventually led him to administrative roles. Now, he’s ready to get to know the students, staff and community.

“Everyone –including the personnel, staff, teachers, cafeteria workers, custodian staff—we’re all here for the kids,” Porter said. “It’s neat seeing them here and starting to figure out what the community will be like. I’m very excited to see that.”

Clothing and Textile Drive to be held at High School Friends of South Orange County School of the Arts (SOCSA) and Clothes for the Cause are hosting a clothing and textile drive on Saturday, Sept. 16.

Items such as new or gently used clothing, paired shoes, towels, sheets, blankets, quilts, backpacks, curtains, purses, belts, tablecloths, placemats, stuffed animals and more are being collected for a fundraiser to benefit SOCSA. Items can be dropped off at Dana Hills High School before 4 p.m. on Sept. 16.

Red Cross, Sport Clips to Give Fee Haircuts to Blood Donors The American Red Cross and Sport Clips Haircuts are teaming up in September to help replenish the blood supply by offering those who give blood or platelets a coupon for a free haircut.

Those who donate from Sept. 1-30 will receive a coupon for a free haircut via email several days after their donations, according to a press release.

In Dana Point, residents can visit the Laguna Cliffs Marriot Resort on Sept. 14 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Drives will be held in San Clemente on Sept. 7 at Coldwell Banker Beachside from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., on Sept. 8 at San Clemente

In San Juan Capistrano, a drive will be held at South Coast Christian Church on Sept. 7 from 9:45 a.m.-2:45 p.m.

Local Group to Hold Second Annual Cannons Wine & Beer Tasting Gala The Marine Corps League-South Coast Detachment will be holding the second annual Cannons Wine & Beer Tasting Gala on Wednesday, Sept. 13.

Proceeds from the event will support the first Marine Regiment-Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force and their families while they are deployed.

In additional to the selection of wines and beer, there will be an assortment of sparkling wines. Cannons will offer gourmet cheeses, fruits and crackers plus appetizers. For dessert, there will be a chocolate fountain to dip fruit.

Letters to the Editor DUPLEX DEVELOPMENT NOT COMPATIBLE WITH NEIGHBORHOOD GEORGE MEADOWS, Dana Point

Dear Dana Point City Council/Dana Point Times Editor, I am the owner of the duplex adjacent to the four unit development on Via Verde recently approved by the Planning Commission. The approved four units are contained on two sloped lots in Capo Beach. It is my understanding that each unit contains approximately 2,550 square feet.** Each contains four bedrooms and 4.5 baths. At the Planning Commission meeting, photos were shown for comparison to similar neighborhood duplexes.

My unit was one of the pictured. My unit and the other unit shown are 1,400 and 1,300 square feet. This approved complex is in no way similar. Mine contains three bedrooms and two baths and the other unit shown as example contains two bedrooms and two baths. Mine also contains a large amount of open land for garden and mature trees. The other duplexes in the neighborhood are of similar size to mine.

This development is being appealed by the neighboring home and duplex owners and will be on a future City Council agenda (September meeting.) These neighbors and I do not believe the development

is compatible with or complements our neighborhood as required by Dana Point Municipal Code ordinance 9.05.130.

Editor’s Note: The staff report states the project site is 19,050 square-feet comprised of two lots. The lot is zoned as a “Residential Duplex 14” which allows residential dwelling units for each 2,500 square feet of land area and has a General Plan designation of residential 7-14 du/acre.

Each of the units have a different square footage ranging in 2,540 to 2,577. The report can be found at www.danapointtimes.com.

RESEARCHING THE TCA CORD BAUER, San Clemente

While researching the history of the Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA), I found that while the projections for the toll roads were under $800 million, the final costs were over $4 billion. It's breathtaking how the TCA blew past projections by $3 billion. It made me think of the Solyndra Scandal and how that cost taxpayers over $500 million, which is peanuts compared to the TCA. I found that 2.7 percent of OC residents work in San Diego County, while 22.7 percent work in L.A. County. Estimated ridership numbers on the toll roads still haven't been met, even after 20 years.

Surprisingly, traffic on Interstate 5 has been mostly stable for the past 20 years. A recent OCTA study backs this up.

During my research, I also found an article from 2008, when the TCA chose the

Green Alignment. It says, “But TCA notes that there were 38 alternatives studied, and they all failed for various reasons— primarily due to their negative effects on both natural habitats and homes and businesses,” said Jennifer Seaton, TCA spokeswoman.

I’d like to know how all these failed alignments are now back in play, when the only real changes are increased TCA debt and toll rates.

What checks and balances have they put in place to protect Orange County taxpayers? What’s stopping the TCA from feeding us more cost overruns and missed ridership projections with the next extension?

Perhaps the TCA is gambling that a revolving door of board members will stifle accountability. Maybe they want to pit one community against another in a bid for new toll routes. Either way, it’s been done before.

For 20 years the TCA has been doing the same things over and over and expecting different results. We need to dissolve the TCA to end this insanity.

At the Movies: Soderbergh Makes ‘Logan Lucky’

inematic auteur Steven Soderbergh is an intriguing enigma. He made the successful transition from indie filmmaker to studio director effortlessly, being one of only two directors to ever be nominated for “Best Director” twice in the same year. His public image has mystique too, with multiple pseudonyms behind the scenes, sometimes with bizarre interview gimmicks and erroneously announcing an early retirement in 2013, only to go back to work with Logan Lucky, which is now in theaters.

On the West Virginia border, blue-collar laborer Jimmy Logan (Channing Tatum) loses his job and is about to lose his daughter when he discovers his ex-wife, Bobbi Jo (Katie Holmes), and her new husband are moving the family out of state.

As a quick way to make some big money,

Jimmy recruits his brother, Clyde (Adam Driver), to come up with a scheme to rob the Charlotte Motor Speedway, along with their sister, Mellie (Riley Keough), and convicted safecracker, Joe Bang (Daniel Craig).

Seth MacFarlane, Sebastian St an and Hilary Swank also make up some of the big-name cast. Logan Lucky is a solid, straightforward heist flick, akin to a southern Ocean’s Eleven (2001), also from Soderbergh. With his usual pseudonyms as cinematographer, editor and screenwriter, Soderbergh reminds us that even with a big budget he hasn’t abandoned his indie roots and doesn’t feel the need to pander. With NASCAR inside jokes and a guitar-heavy score surrounding a backwoods atmosphere with an amusing ensemble cast, Logan is a decent way to end the summer movie season. DP

Widow Puzzled by a Friend’s Warning

R

obyn, 62, a widow of five and a half years, contacted me regarding a comment made to her about waiting too long to start dating again.

Robyn emailed, “I am curious about something, after being told recently by a friend that ‘If you wait too long, you will get used to being alone, and attempts at re-partnering will become futile.’

“I was married 32 years. After the first year of widowhood, I entered a very shortterm relationship, and then six months later, began a relationship that lasted just over two years. I ended the latter relationship (it was going off the rails anyway), as I felt that I needed more time to sort things out and set a new course in life.

“I do wish to re-partner at some point, but feel I am not quite ready to make any overt move in that direction. I have signaled to a couple of trusted contacts that I am open to meeting their single male friends, but am in no great rush to do so.

“However, is there a point of no return, as my friend has suggested? I have read stories of people getting to a place in their lives where they thought they would be alone forever, only to find a most wonderful person to spend their later years with.

My response to Robyn: You say you wish to re-partner, but aren’t ready to make any “overt” move in that direction.

I assume what that means is you aren’t ready to actively look for a potential mate.

However, I think you may be more willing than you realize since you wisely have signaled to a couple of contacts that you are open to meeting single men.

For people 60-plus, networking through

acquaintances and friends is one of the most important steps they can take to meet potential mates. Continue to do that. Your friend suggested if you wait too long, you will get used to being alone, and attempts at re-partnering will become futile. Is there a point of no return? Absolutely not.

Nothing is farther from the truth. Becoming comfortable living alone can be an important and attractive characteristic to have.

Often, older singles are so lonely, they look too hard and come off as desperate and needy. But in your case, you invested the time to discover who you truly are, and you are comfortable in your own skin, which is a trait that men admire.

But, sitting back and doing nothing isn’t a great idea either. You need to live life with or without a mate. Get more involved in activities that interest you. Meet new people. Develop friendships with women, which ON LIFE AND can make going places LOVE AFTER 50 easier since you’ll have

Yes, we often hear that singles meet a new mate when they least expect it. But, that doesn’t happen by being reclusive and thinking they’d be alone forever. It happens because they are enjoying life and socializing.

So, no, you aren’t past the point of no return. Just crank it up a bit. Plus, the fact that you were involved in two relationships since you were widowed is a good thing.

That means you are open to sharing your life, but, of course, with the right person, and not just anybody who comes along.

t was a homecoming show for Andrew McMahon when he performed at Salt Creek Beach’s Bluff Park on Aug. 17 as part of OC Parks’ summer concert series.

The grass area was filled with hundreds of people as the sun began to set and music filled the air. With the ocean as the backdrop, guests listened to Shelter & Grace open for Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness.

During McMahon’s hour-long performance, he pumped up the crowd when he stood on his piano, inflated the air-dancers on stage and crowd surfed while on an inflatable duck.

As McMahon performed “Shot Out of a Cannon” and “Dead Man’s Dollar,” people waved their hands and sang along.

Before he began his former band, Jack’s Mannequin’s song, “Dark Blue,” he told the crowd he had a dream about being in the ocean, very similar to the colors of the scene behind the stage.

Shelter & Grace’s lead singer, Erland Wanberg, told the audience he worked for Danman’s Music School which is where he met Grace, the keyboardist.

Brian Ireland, who played alongside McMahon in Something Corporate, played the drums during one of the songs. McMahon also reminisced of their Battle of the Band days in the Mall at Dana Hills.

Family Science Night at The Ocean Institute: Snails, Slugs and Slime

W

ith sticky hands and buckets of slime, the Ocean Institute ended their summer Family Science Night series on Aug. 17. Titled “Snails, Slugs and Slime,” the event encouraged attendees to get their hands dirty and discover first-hand the components of slime.

Upon entering, guests were presented with samples of slime made with different bases—xanthan gum, chia seed and corn starch. Attendees then took their gooey concoctions to various stations where they took part in a series of tests.

First, children placed the slime on scales to discover which was the heaviest. Next, attendees tested the slime’s slipperiness by coating a small ball in the substance and then rolling it down a foil ramp. In the final test, children threw the coated slime balls at a poster board, with the slime’s stickiness determined by how long it remained plastered to the board.

Inside the Ocean Institute’s interactive labs, attendees plunged their hands into the touch tanks to feel ocean creatures and surveyed kelp, fish algae and squid underneath microscopes. After exploring the institute’s marine life, the families gathered indoors for a lecture.

Guest lecturer Jann Vendetti, Ph.D., from the Los Angeles Natural History Museum brought along snails for attendees to look after during the presentation. Vendetti used the remaining snails to create a live display of “snail art.”

Paddling With a Purpose SUP trio paddles from Catalina to Dana Point to raise money for Ocean Institute

t was dark, nearly pitch black out on the water when Ron Hoffmeyer and Jeff and Austin Hughes embarked on a journey several months in the making.

The trio carried their stand-up paddleboards, backpacks and gear out to the sandy beach on Avalon and tried to eye their path out of the harbor and into the Catalina Channel.

Nearly 11 hours later, the three paddlers were celebrating at Baby Beach in Dana Point, having completed the roughly 40-mile open-ocean journey from Catalina that only a select few have conquered.

The journey was long and tough, but they were fueled by the fact they were doing it for a cause.

Hoffmeyer, Jeff Hughes and Austin Hughes, a father-son duo, crossed the channel to raise money for the Ocean Institute, where Hoffmeyer is a teacher. As of Aug. 24, the three had raised $15,135, which will go directly to the seaside learning center.

“We wanted to call attention to what the Ocean Institute offers, and I wanted to give back to this community I’ve settled in to,” Hoffmeyer, a Minnesota native, said.

“The Ocean Institute gives children who have never been on a boat the chance to see marine life for the first time.”

Each member of the paddling crew brought something to the table that was beneficial to their training.

Jeff Hughes is a nighttime emergency room doctor at St. Joseph’s Hospital. His medical expertise played a crucial role in finding the right diet for each person, Hoffmeyer said. Austin Hughes, 25, is an experienced paddler that will soon be joining the Army.

Hoffmeyer and Jeff Hughes were discussing personal goals several months ago when they decided to go all-in on a paddleboard journey. While Jeff and Austin had extensive open-ocean paddling experience, Hoffmeyer’s paddling world consisted mainly of taking his SUP around the Dana Point Harbor and out to nearby

The three began training vigorously in April, increasing their mileage bit by bit until they reached the 30-mile plateau two weeks before the crossing.

A huge pod of dolphins greeted the group within the first few hours of their crossing from Catalina. Normally the crossing toward the mainland is assisted by a tailwind, but the trio was not so lucky and actually had a slight breeze into their face for the first half of the journey.

Every two hours the group, which was flanked by a spotter boat, stopped for a 10-minute break to rehydrate and eat.

Hoffmeyer, who has a degree in biology, is a jack-of-all-trades when teaching at the Ocean Institute. He shows children how to dissect squid, teaches them about the anatomy of baby hermit crabs and shows them what lies beneath the waves out on the institute’s vessels.

He never got to use his biology degree after a 34-year career in the printing industry. Four years ago, he sold his stake in his former company and devoted his life to his two passions: the environment and teaching children. The group’s paddleboard journey was a great way to assist the effort even more, he said.

“Everyone has their favorite causes,” Hoffmeyer said. “To me, the Ocean Institute checks off many boxes that are important to me. Hopefully we’ll have left some children inspired.” DP

Last weekend, 12-year-old Dane Matson, younger bro of rising star, Kade, caught some serious fire in Huntington Beach. Surfing in a doubleheader in the NSSA’s highly competitive Southwest Explorer conference, Dane got to work early and never looked back. By Sunday afternoon, he’d won two Boys divisions and two Menehune divisions.

And if things are still congested, perhaps there’s a softer approach? At one point, even the TCA suggested a smaller artery connecting La Pata to Cristianitos was a viable solution. Then they said, “we don’t do arteries.”

It’s not an ideal solution, as it would still cut through park land, but it would certainly be less intrusive and impactful if done right.

This all may be a moot point, anyway. In a few years, the Navy and Marine Corps could decide not to renew the lease agreement for the State Park land, in which case the TCA would be handed off to the federal government, and the process would begin anew.
