Study Shines Light on Homelessness in South Orange County

Five things Dana Point should know this week Officials Rescue Injured Sea Lion in the Harbor THE LATEST: Officials rescued an injured sea lion that was recently spotted numerous times in the Dana Point Harbor on Wednesday, Sept. 6.

Although the rescue was successful, Pacific Marine Mammal Center (PMMC) officials said the male California sea lion suffered from severe injuries to his hind quarters and had to be humanely euthanized due to the severity of the injuries.

Officials said the sea lion was 3-4 years old and was approximately 100 pounds underweight.

The PMMC said they were notified on Thursday, Aug. 31 of an injured California sea lion in the Harbor and made several attempts to rescue it for several days.

“The animal was reported to have injuries to its hind quarters near its hip/flipper area,” said Krysta Higuchi, events and public relations coordinator. “PMMC deployed an experienced rescue team, along with PMMC’s Veterinarian Dr. Barnett, to assess the animal.”

Officials said the animal was found floating near a dock, where upon closer assessment rescuers said it appeared to have a type of netting or line wrapped around its wounded section.

WHAT’S NEXT: As of press time, officials said the initial cause of the injury was unclear, but several reports from the public and rescue teams and photos showed a green mono-filament line may have been the cause.

“PMMC believes that the entanglement inhibited his mobility such that he could not evade predators,” the release stated.

Dana Point Civic Association’s Coffee Chat to Return Sept. 15 THE LATEST: After a hiatus during the summer months, the Dana Point Civic Association’s Coffee Chat will return on Friday, Sept. 15.

County Undersheriff Don Barnes. Barnes has held his position for 29 years and is the organization’s chief operating officer.

Currently, he oversees the daily operations of 3,900 employees and 700 volunteers, officials said.

He will provide a general sheriff’s department/law enforcement update to those who attend.

Dana Point Police Services Invites Dog Owners to Join Paw Patrol THE LATEST: Dana Point Police Services recently announced the creation of Dana Point Paw Patrol and are currently looking for dog owners to join.

Dana Point Paw Patrol is a Neighborhood Watch program that encourages dog walkers to take an active role in helping to prevent crime.

“This program is designed to promote police-community partnerships, build relationships with your neighbors and help report suspicious behavior,” the organization’s flyer states.

Those interested are able to sign-up for a free training class with Dana Point Police Services’ Crime Prevention Unit. The class will focus on providing residents with helpful information on how to effectively observe and report criminal and suspicious activity.

WHAT’S NEXT: For those interested in the program, Dana Point Police Services will hold two upcoming events.

The first is on Wednesday, Sept. 20 at Pines Park at 6 p.m. followed by the second event on Sunday, Sept. 24 at Sea Terrace Park at 10 a.m.

The events are free and dog-friendly and no RSVP is necessary. There will be treats and goodies for the four-legged attendees.

CUSD Superintendent to Speak at Upcoming Human Trafficking Town Hall THE LATEST: Capistrano Unified School District Superintendent Kirsten Vital will be a guest speaker at an upcoming Human Trafficking Town Hall in Laguna Niguel on Thursday, Sept. 21.

Attendees will learn about human trafficking, how to recognize the signs, how to protect youth from being targeted, and how to help victims.

Other guest speakers include Jim Carson, Orangewood Foundation program manager; Sgt. Juan Reveles, Orange County Human Trafficking Task Force; Kelly Manley, Orange County District Attorney Human Trafficking & Exploitation Unit; Nicole Strattman, senior social services supervisor/CSEC coordinator; and Oree Freeman, a human trafficking survivor.

THE LATEST: After months of compiling data from volunteers and homeless assistance organizations, the Point in Time Study, which takes a census of the homeless population in Orange County, has been released.

The study shows that Orange County’s homeless population has risen 7.6 percent from 2015 to 2017, with a total of 4,792 homeless people counted. The census was conducted in January.

“The increase represented the combination of a decrease of 43 in sheltered homelessness (from 2,251 to 2,208) and an increase of 383 in unsheltered homelessness (from 2,201 to 2,584),” a summary from the study stated. “Further, the increase in unsheltered homelessness was attributable to an increase in the number of unsheltered single adults (from 2,193 to 2,518).”

The study mentioned that the increase could also have come from more thorough efforts from volunteers and assisting organizations. The increased coverage of the Santa Ana Riverbed also may have attributed to the rise in numbers.

The study also showed an increase of about 300 unsheltered homeless people within the county, a 17 percent increase from 2015. This included homeless adults and children. Unsheltered homeless people were categorized as those who were “known locals” to the area.

“As is the case across the country, the majority of homeless people live in adultonly households,” the summary stated.

“Those that do live with a minor child are almost exclusively living in a sheltered situation—based on the HUD definition, there were 25 unsheltered children in Orange County at the time of this count, all of whom were accompanied by adults.”

The studies across the county are compiled by 2-1-1 Orange County, a nonprofit organization.

WHAT’S NEXT: The Point in Time Study will likely be used as a hallmark document with regard to city procedures in addressing homelessness in cities of South Orange County. The studies are conducted with various organizations every two years.

NEW OWNERS DONUT WORLD 34130 Doheny Park Road, Capistrano Beach As residents drive through Doheny Village, they may notice the closure of a popular business, Donut World.

Last month, the shop closed and now Tom and Nikki Yib are currently in the process of renovating the space and opening a new shop. The Yibs also own Kelly’s Donuts in San Clemente and are excited about the new endeavor.

They want to create a beach-vibe inside the new shop and want help from the locals on naming the new space.

“It’s a great location,” said Tom Yib. “We will upgrade it and make it look nice and bring more people to the area.”

Currently, there is no official open date, but members of the public can stop by the San Clemente location to submit their ideas on what to name the new shop.

Bob Mardian, the owner, built the restaurant from the ground up in 1972. He was just 24 years old when he signed a 30-year lease.

“I was going to college and I was in prelaw and I thought I would be a lawyer like my dad,” Mardian said and added that he never thought he’d end up in the restaurant business.

Growing up, Mardian frequently visited Dana Point to surf and knew about the undeveloped Harbor. After speaking with a friend that owned a successful restaurant in another Harbor he began the steps to open his own restaurant.

When the restaurant first opened, it was a limited-menu prime steakhouse, now the space is a popular destination for its waterfront views and variety of menu options.

“We’ve come a long way,” Mardian said.

One thing Mardian and Jay Styles, manager of Wind & Sea, said they enjoyed was seeing all the generations of families dine or work for the business.

“We’re part of the fabric here,” Mardian said.

Christine Vito, who has been working as a server for The Vue Restaurant since its opening, said that the relationships she has made while working are what stand

out to her most. The Vue Restaurant is one of the hotel’s dining locations that offers Italian cuisine with the ocean serving as the stunning backdrop for diners. Through her work as a server, Vito has met friends from all over the world and even met her husband.

“These relationships are priceless and I am so grateful for them,” Vito said.

Housekeeping Supervisor Lourdes Bato said that she is proud to be a part of the Marriott team. In her 30-year relationship with the hotel, Bato said that she has grown personally and professionally. Her managers and colleagues have supported her as a family and helped her to grow, she said.

“Marriott Hotel is a big part of my life, like a second family to me,” Bato said.

Valerie Mockett, who serves as an At Your Service Agent, said that The Marriott has also become her second family. As an At Your Service Agent, Mockett communicates with guests to answer their questions and process any requests.

Samuels said that the hotel receives compliments through social media and guest feedback about these women highlighting their warm and welcoming personalities.

San Clemente City Council Approves Extension of Trolley Program to Oct. 1 After what city of San Clemente staff called a successful summer, the Trolley Program will be extended for another month.

The city was required to maintain at least six to 10 riders per hour on every trolley, but staff members at the Sept. 5 City Council meeting said the trolleys had exceeded 50 riders per hour, which amounted to about 90,000 total riders, when they run Thursdays through Sundays. The cost to extend the program is $35,000 from the air quality fund.

Council member Lori Donchak said during the meeting that San Clemente has had the most successful system, in terms of ridership, within the county. The city paid for about 10 percent of the costs of the $1 million to fund the service through the Orange County Transportation Authority’s program.

Another portion was donated by the Friends of San Clemente Foundation.

All trolley rides are free.

The Trolley Program will continue to run during its normally scheduled times from Thursday through Sunday until Oct. 1. City Council will discuss possible opportunities for advertising on the trolleys and could consider expanding the trolley routes for next year. —Eric Heinz

Trader Joe’s San Juan Capistrano On Track to Open This Fall The wait is almost over—Trader Joe’s has confirmed that its new grocery store in San Juan Capistrano is slated to open later this year.

On April 18, the City Council voted unanimously to issue a letter public convenience or necessity for alcohol sales at the incoming Trader Joe’s. That letter was the final city

approval needed in order to have off-site alcohol sales at the store.

Trader Joe’s is set to occupy the former Big Lots space in the Mission Village Center at 32151 Camino Capistrano. Proposed hours of operation are from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily with a staff of 15 to 35 people depending on the season.

Back in March, a representative from Art Rodriguez & Associates—which handled the

application for alcohol sales on behalf of Trader Joe’s—had told the city’s Planning Commission that Trader Joe’s was anticipating a September opening. But it seems the store may take a little longer to open its doors.

Trader Joe’s spokeswoman Alison Mochizuki confirmed that the store is set to open the fourth quarter of this year. Mochizuki said a more specific opening date is not yet available. —Allison Jarrell

Letters to the Editor HOW MANY MORE CLIMATE-RELATED DISASTERS CAN WE ENDURE? MARK REYNOLDS, Executive Director of Citizens’ Climate Lobby

Hurricane Harvey just drowned Southeast Texas. The storm gained strength as it crossed the abnormally warm Gulf waters and grew to a Category 4 hurricane.

To make matters worse, Harvey also came on the heels of an incredibly wet August in the region, and soil moisture was already above average.

At least five deaths and dozens of injuries were reported in the first few days of the storm. People took refuge on their rooftops and needed dramatic water rescues. In addition to the human costs, the economic costs are staggering: J.P. Morgan estimated that the eventual insured losses could be anywhere from $10 billion to $20 billion. Bloomberg reported that the total costs could mount to $30 billion when the impacts on the area’s labor, transportation and energy sectors are taken into account. The National Flood Insurance Program, which is already $24 billion in debt due to the devastation from Hurricane Sandy and Hurricane Katrina, is not at all ready to respond to the damage.

In times like these, we have to ask ourselves: How many more storms will force us to measure rain in feet, rather than inches? How many more people are we willing to displace from their homes, or lose completely in extreme weather events like these?

How many more years will we dump greenhouse gases into the atmosphere with impunity? Because as long as we’re doing that, we’re signing up for more of the same, and worse.

Of course, climate change cannot account for any specific storm. But it’s undeniable that a warmer, wetter world plays a role in intensifying storms like Hurricane Harvey. Kevin Trenberth, a senior scientist at the U.S. National Center for Atmospheric Research, said “the main fuel for the storm” was warm water in the Gulf—as much as 7.2 degrees Fahrenheit above average.

We need comprehensive legislation to shift the market away from the greenhouse gases causing climate change. A national carbon-pricing bill could require fossil fuel companies to pay a fee for every ton of carbon dioxide or equivalent emissions. As the price rises each year, and as businesses look after their bottom lines, the market will quickly turn to low- or no-carbon options. If all that revenue were returned equally to American households Dana Point Times September 8-14, 2017

in the form of a dividend, studies show it would boost the economy and bring millions of jobs. And of course, it would set us on a course to stabilizing our climate.

This type of plan already has major conservative support. The Climate Leadership Council, which is led by Republican statesmen James Baker, Henry Paulson, George Shultz and others, released “The Conservative Case for Carbon Dividends” earlier this year. They explain that pricing carbon and returning the revenue to Americans will “strengthen our economy, reduce regulation, help working-class Americans, shrink government and promote national security.”

Florida Republican Rep. Carlos Curbelo saw Miami flooding and heard his constituents’ outcries, so he responded by forming the bipartisan Climate Solutions Caucus with Florida Democrat Rep. Ted Deutch. Now the group has a total of 52 Republicans and Democrats working together, many of whom have seen climate impacts in their own districts and are ready to get serious about climate action.

After Hurricane Harvey, perhaps members of the Texas delegation will be ready to take their own seats at the table. Let’s see how many more representatives in Congress will step up.

MAYOR DEBRA LEWIS SHOULD BE COMMENDED NOT CRITICIZED BARBARA WILSON, Dana Point

California U. S. Senator Kamala Harris invited our Mayor and seven other mayors from large cities to join her in a roundtable discussion in San Jose. What a wonderful opportunity for Dana Point.

I was disheartened when I saw the quotes in the OC Register article (Sept.

3) about the meeting from Councilmen Muller and Tomlinson criticizing Mayor Lewis for attending.

In the article, the Long Beach Mayor was quoted saying what a great job Mayor Lewis did representing Dana Point and educating the group on the San Onofre spent nuclear waste storage issue. Our city was given a rare opportunity to bring this and other important local issues such as homelessness and sober living homes directly to our U. S. Senator.

The article stated that prior to the meeting Mayor Lewis discussed the trip with the City Manager, Mark Denny. City policies permitted the visit without prior Council approval.

Mayor Lewis ran on a platform of change. She works tirelessly in meetings with Dana Point residents to hear their concerns and suggestions. She frequently speaks at civic club meetings, and has attended Neighborhood Watch gatherings, kept up with San Onofre decommissioning activities, educated herself on city budget matters, holds public office hours and publishes articles to advise citizens of issues affecting the city.

She has met with Rep. Darrell Issa, District Attorney Tony Rackauckas and other politicians from cities, county, state and federal agencies to gain their support for helping her serve Dana Point residents.

Unfortunately, when the Mayor attempted to join an organization of South Orange County cities, these same councilmen voted against joining the group.

Fortunately, Councilman Muller did acknowledge that the Mayor has every right to meet with whomever she pleases.

Only Councilman Wyatt sees the value of sharing information and communicating with our neighbors as a way to solve common problems.

We can only achieve change by working together!

Growing up means becoming independent, which you can do by going to school, work or even the store without relying on someone telling you when or how to get there. I’m sure some people can walk outside and get in a car to go to Walmart, Albertsons or Target, but for me and many others, doing that takes more time than needed. Not everyone has a car.

Bus routes like the 191 in San Clemente stopped by the store and in front of San Clemente High School.

However, these routes have been taken out leaving the bus stops with a sign saying take a Lyft or an Uber; however, I do not make enough money to take the taxi everywhere I need to go. The bus was affordable and convenient when I needed it, but now it is gone. Personally, I would like to try to bring it back if others feel the same as I do. Thank you.

BANDEJA COLOMBIANA AT LA COLOMBIANA

T

he portions of the Bandeja Colombiana are only part of what will leave guests feeling full after a visit to La Colombiana in North Beach, San Clemente.

Tender marinated carne asada and grillbranded chorizo are accompanied by the South American standby of white rice and beans. A fried egg is topped with heaping portions of avocado framed by fried plantains (patacones). An arepa, a cornbased pancake popular in Venezuela and Colombia and similar to the Mexican gordita or Salvadorian pupusa, is paired with several salsas to add the right amount of spice to this hearty mixedplate.

La Colombiana owner and manager Eddie Bashoor, who came to California from Colombia when she was 21 years old, described the Bandeja Colombiana as “a great introduction to the best Columbian food, my pride and joy.” She also explained that Colombian food is inherently gluten-free, almost all corn-based as opposed to flour.

On Stage at the Coach House: Pat Boone

M

any recording artists have created their own rendition of “When the Swallows Come Back to Capistrano,” but how often do you get to hear the legendary Pat Boone sing his 1957 hit?

As it turns out, Boone’s show at The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano on Saturday, Sept. 23 may be fans’ last chance to hear him sing the iconic tune in the song’s namesake town.

“This is my last go around,” Boone said. “I’m not saying goodbye, but I won’t be here to do this show again. It’s been such an incredible, unbelievable career, and I get to live it over again at The Coach House.”

It’s true that Boone isn’t necessarily saying goodbye to San Juan Capistrano—he and his wife, Shirley, drive over from Beverly Hills every Sunday to go to church at The Effect in San Juan.

Boone, now 83, was barely 22 years old when his career took off in the 1950s.

Throughout the years, he became known as a singer, songwriter, actor, TV host, producer, author, motivational speaker, radio personality, record company head, TV station owner, sports team owner, family man, humanitarian, and as a man unafraid to air his views.

Over the course of his storied career, Boone sold more than 45 million records.

He recorded 38 Top-40 hits and holds the record for having a single on the Billboard charts for 220 consecutive weeks. Boone is ranked No. 9 on Billboard’s list of the Top 100 Top-40 artists from 1955-1995.

With five decades of recording history behind him, Boone said he’s looking forward to sharing a slice of his life at his upcoming Coach House show. The evening will include video clips of past performances in addition to Boone singing some of his biggest hits, ranging from patriotic tunes to spiritual songs.

And of course, there’ll be one about the swallows of San Juan Capistrano.

H

i my name is Wink. I am a female, gray Domestic Shorthair. I am about 1-year and 6 months old and I have been at the shelter since July 19.

You may have noticed that I only have one eye, but that doesn’t stop me! When I arrived at the shelter I had a severe injury to my eye, but the shelter staff, veterinarian and volunteer group made sure that wouldn’t set me back.

They made sure I got the medical treatment I needed, and now I am all healed up and ready for my new home!

I love to run around and play with toys, and bask in the sun. I love all the attention, so I would do best being the only cat in the home.

Ohana: Info to Know before Attending

t’s that time of year again; Ohana Music Festival will be taking over Doheny State Beach this weekend.

Musicians like Eddie Vedder, Fiona Apple, Jack Johnson, HAIM, Social Distortion, the Pixies and much more will be rocking on two stages on the beach beginning Friday, Sept. 8.

Along with music, guests can enjoy craft beer, wine and signature cocktails with artisan food options from local restaurants and food trucks throughout the festival.

Tickets are still available for single day tickets and weekend passes. Prices vary from $99.50-$275. A portion of the Festival’s proceeds will benefit the San Onofre Parks Foundation and the Doheny State Beach Interpretive Association.

PARKING Limited ADA parking will be available at Doheny State Beach.

There will be shuttle parking lots available at the Outlets at San Clemente.

The shuttle will drop off passengers at the front entry of the Festival. Tickets for roundtrip rides are $10 per person, per day.

Shuttles begin one hour before the event doors open and the last shuttle departs from the Festival at 11 p.m.

Guests are able to reserve their shuttle spot online.

There will be a free bike valet provided to festival goers. From 8 a.m.-11 p.m. guests can drop their bikes off but are requested to bring their own lock.

n Sunday, Sept. 17, the Lantern District will be filled with classic cars of all shapes and sizes. Collectors will be showcasing their customized vehicles and motorcycles during the Dana Point Lantern District Car and Motorcycle Show.

The Dana Point Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the city of Dana Point, will host the show along Del Prado between Violet Lantern and the PCH/Del Prado Archway from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Dolphin Fall Sports Preview DHHS student-athletes ready for new season

T

he 2017 high school sports fall season is underway. In our annual preview, we get you caught up to-date on all the Dana Hills High School teams that will be in action this fall.

BOYS WATER POLO

The Dana Hills boys water polo team that takes to the pool this season will be among the youngest that coach Matt Rosa has ever guided in his long tenure as head of the program.

Just four starters with experience return, leaving the door open for a large group of underclassmen to break onto the roster and contribute.

However, the returning players the Dolphins have are good ones and offer plenty of experience. Four-year letterman and standout lefty Kai Hanson returns, as does senior James Daugherty and junior Kaden Likins, who Rosa expects to be the Dolphins leading scorer.

Sophomore goalie Justin Edward had to learn the ropes quickly as a freshman starting on varsity. Rosa said both Edward’s skills and confidence have improved and expects a solid sophomore campaign out of the netminder.

Outside of the returning four players, the Dolphins field players will be made up entirely of newcomers.

The scenario is a break from the Dolphins’ recent past, where they had a handful of returning standouts they relied

on to produce every game.

“I’m excited for this group. We have a lot of young guys but we’re definitely more of a team this year,” Rosa said.

“If we’re going to win, it’s going to be because of a team effort … I also think we have a deeper bench than I’ve had before.

I feel confident going three, four guys off the bench, which I don’t think a lot of other teams in league have.”

Dana Hills entered the season as a team on the CIF-SS Division 1 and 2 preseason watch list and will vie for one of the South Coast League’s three playoff berths.

September will be an action-packed month for the Dolphins, who will travel to play nonleague matches against Foothill, Santa Margarita and several tournaments before heading into league play on Sept. 26.

An 11-7 nonleague victory over perennial playoff contender Northwood jumpstarted the Dana Hills girls tennis team’s 2017 season.

The win was a statement for the Dolphins squad, which returns a strong group of returning players that helped the team win a share of the South Coast League title and advance to the CIF-SS Division 1 Page 20

quarterfinals one year ago.

Singles players Courtney Swift, the defending league singles champion, and Emilia Gorczyca return to anchor the singles rotation. Swift advanced to the round of 16 at the CIF-SS Individual Championships last year.

Sisters Drae and Stila Fresenius will be a formidable doubles unit, according to coach Justin Green. Veteran doubles players Caroline Halloran and Dana Mackensen return.

Dana Hills is playing a tough schedule, highlighted by a trip north to the Golden State Classic at Stanford this week. The Dolphins will get to play against 15 of the best teams in the country and will play inside Stanford’s Taube Tennis Center.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

The Dana Hills boys cross country team nearly reached the top of the California preps running scene last year.

The Dolphins placed first in the South Coast League, the Orange County Championships and finished second at both the CIF-SS Division 1 and CIF Division 1 State Championship meets.

When assessing the potential of this year’s group, coach Craig Dunn didn’t mince words.

“This team could be better than last year’s team,” Dunn said.

Behind one stellar senior and several main contributors from last year, the Dolphins have their sights set high as they enter 2017.

Senior Jack Landgraf will be the pacesetter at the top of the Dolphins rotation.

Landgraf, who has raced in two Nike Cross Nationals, has emerged as the clear team leader. Dunn expects Landgraf to race out front and have the next four or five Dolphin runners to finish within 30 seconds of him, which should be a winning formula.

Aside from Landgraf the Dolphins return a stable of experienced runners, including senior Sagan Svoboda, juniors Eddie Wagenseller, Simon Fuller and Hayden Stein and sophmore Carrick Denker.

Dana Hills was ranked fourth in the CIF-SS Division 1 preseason poll.

With so much experience back for a reload, the Dolphins are expecting to reach lofty heights yet again.

“I believe we have the ability and talent (to win state), it just depends on the work we want to put in,” Landgraf said. “But we definitely have the team to do it this year.”

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Nearly every runner from last year’s team returns for the Dana Hills girls cross country team, which is a good sign for a young team that has had a lot of success.

The Dolphins placed second in the ultra-competitive South Coast League last season, finished second at the CIF-SS Division 1 Championships and fifth at the CIF Division 1 State Championships.

Dana Hills lost its top runner from last year in Kathryn Kaloroumakis, but returns a strong trio that contributed plenty of points in 2016. The 1-2-3 combination at the top of the Dolphins rotation will be returners Lauren Soto, Leila Keycan and Sarah Meng.

and should be able to pile up points.

“All of the girls are coming back, so we’re going to be just as strong as we were last year, if not stronger,” Cota said.

“They learned a lot last year and they’re older now, they’re smarter and might be a little bit better racers.”

Rounding out the team of returners that will add valuable depth are Holly Morales, Megan Geiger, Leyla Boyar and Marisa Gaitan.

Dana Hills has yet to run a varsity race, but after opening its season in Hawaii next week they will showcase their talents at the Dana Hills Invitational on Sept. 23.

GIRLS GOLF

The Dana Hills girls golf team hasn’t skipped a beat in 2017.

The Dolphins, the reigning co-South Coast League champions, are 3-1 overall with wins over Mission Viejo and Beckman, one of the better programs in Orange County. The Dolphins lone loss came against University, a top team.

Dana Hills is carrying six players on its varsity roster and all six are returning players with experience.

Senior Averee Dovsek is leading the way with a team-low scoring average of 3.7 strokes above par. Sophomore Lauren Wahlstrom is not far behind. Dana Hills’ depth is bolstered by the return of juniors Isley Grguric, Katie Jacobson, Sam Lapple and Madeline Bayless.

“All these girls are working really hard on their own time, they all play tournaments year-round, so it’ll come together,” coach Glenn Forster said.

Last year, the Dolphins shared the league title with rival San Clemente and Forster believes the league title race will come down to the two teams again in 2017.

The Dolphins won’t have to wait long to face their rivals. The Dolphins and Tritons open league play against one another on Sept. 12 at Bella Colina Country Club.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

The Dana Hills girls volleyball team began the season on the CIF-SS Division 1 teams to watch list, along with 14 other top teams. So far, the Dolphins have been living up to the ranking.

playing in the Tae Kim Lakewood Molten Classic at Lakewood High last week.

Dana Hills defeated Valley Christian and Long Beach Wilson in pool play before falling to Harvard-Westlake. In the consolation bracket, the Dolphins defeated Yorba Linda in five sets and beat Esperanza in three to finish with a 4-1 record at the high-profile tournament.

The Dolphins picked up two more nonleague wins, against Woodbridge and Tesoro, respectively, on their home court this week.

For the Red, White and Blue Dolphins football honors first responders

he Dana Hills High School football program paid its respects to local first responders during the team’s first home game of the season on Sept. 1.

The Dolphins hosted their third annual Red, White & Blue game, welcoming firefighters, Orange County Sheriffs and others at Dolphin Stadium. First responders were treated to a pregame meal and free entrance to the game.

Static displays ran throughout the stadium, including displays from bomb squads, bloodhounds and rescue vehicles.

“With all the events happening in Houston (Texas) and the focus on how the first responders there are saving lives by the hour, I feel our tribute game is a great way to bring focus to our local first responders and thank them for all they do,” said Dana Hills Football booster representative David Simmons.

t’s a dream come true,” said Richie Lovett in 2003 when he won the Boost Mobile Pro—the contest that would eventually become the Hurley Pro. “It’s the first time I’ve made a (CT) final, and I’ve been trying for eight years now. My family never gave up on me; my friends never gave up on me...This is just a dream day.”

Two years later, the Australian’s dream morphed into a nightmare. Diagnosed with a form of malignant bone cancer called clear cell chondrosarcoma, doctors told him he needed surgery to remove the tumor and that the top third of his femur, as well as some muscle tissue, also had to go. For a man that made a living using his legs, it was not the news he wanted to hear.

“The day before the biopsy surgery, I rode down to Lowers. It was winter, and there wasn’t anyone around. I just needed a moment, and I sat there staring out at the ocean just thinking about what was about to happen,” Lovett told the WSL in 2016.

Thankfully, the same grit and determination that took Lovett to the top of the podium at Lowers would get him through his battle with cancer. Today, he’s back in the water and is a successful surfboard designer. He also works with a number of well-established brands in the industry.

Lovett’s story may be the most inspirational of any the world tour victories at Lowers over the years, but every one of them has a backstory. The most famous may be Kelly Slater’s 1990 debut at the

ett Schilling’s epic summer continues.

Currently ensconced in Austin, Texas, for a surf trip, he’s been on the road a lot lately. Fourteen-year-old Schilling and a small crew, including …Lost mastermind Matt “Mayhem” Biolos, headed out to sample the N Land Surf Park. Prior to that, Schilling logged some proper competitive experience at the Vans Pro in Virginia Beach.

But the highlight of the season came in July when Schilling and a small group of international rising stars joined former Dana Point Times September 8-14, 2017

Body Glove Surf Bout III. The emeraldeyed kid from Florida had already been making waves for a few years, but the legend was born on the cobblestones at Lowers.

As the story goes, Slater had just signed a monumental contract with Quiksilver and was eager to prove his worth. Sleeping on the floor at his friend Richard Woolcott’s house, who was working in Quik’s marketing department at the time and would later go on to co-found Volcom, the whole episode was captured in the classic surf video “Black and White.” Taking home a $30,600 first-place check for the effort, seemingly overnight Slater became a household name. He’d go on to star in the TV hit Baywatch, win 11 WSL World Titles and capture world tour victories at Lowers in 2005, ’07, ’08, ’10, ’11 and ’12.

When the Los Angeles Times asked him what he would do with his newfound

world tour stalwart Damien Hobgood in Indonesia for a SURFER Magazine trip. The objective of the trip was for Hobgood to help get the groms used to surfing heavy, hollow waves.

“The kids charged way harder than I ever imagined they would,” recounted Hobgood to SURFER Magazine. “I think I was able to push them right to that edge and have them grow and learn that they can really handle this stuff.”

“On the big day, I was about to paddle over this one wave, and I just heard Damo yell, ‘Go, go!’ So, I turned around and went,” told Schilling. “I was dropping into this wave, and I was like, ‘Oh, shoot, I’m not gonna make it.’ I was thinking I would just kick out, but it was too low-tide, so I just pulled in, and this chandelier hit me in the barrel and threw me off my board.

“I’ve been thinking a lot about giving some of it to the Surfrider Foundation,” he quickly followed. “And I’ll never get around to doing it unless I say I will. I don’t know how much I’ll donate yet, but I want to help.”

For an 18-year-old kid from humble beginnings, it was clear early on where his priorities laid in terms of the environment.

Today, at the top of the org chart of his own brand called OuterKnown, Slater and his business partners are helping revolutionize the clothing industry through their sustainable and environmentally responsible practices. He’s been one of the most outspoken surfers when it comes to preserving and protecting the planet.

“I wasn’t trying to send a message,” Slater would later say of his first win at Lowers. “I wasn’t trying to promote something else. There is an innocence about

that time for me that felt really nice and refreshing and pure. I mean, ... I would love to go back and live that again right now.”

More recently, Mick Fanning came into the Hurley Pro in 2015 not with something to prove to the world, but something to prove to himself. After being attacked by a Great White shark in the final of the J-Bay Open in South Africa only two months prior, he still had some jitters to overcome.

Staying with longtime friend Taylor Knox down in Carlsbad, Fanning used his time in California to recharge his batteries and get his head back in the game. “I came in early and we had amazing waves. I’ve had such a great support team here. I’ve been having a lot of fun. My mum’s been here too which has been really special.”

“It’s been a wild year for me,” said Fanning after beating Brazilian Adriano De Souza in the final.

Every year we’re lucky to see these stories unfold right before our eyes. From battling cancer, to stepping out onto the world’s stage for the first time, to regaining one’s own sense of purpose, a win at Lowers means a lot more than a payday and a cool trophy.
