Based on three fee areas—including planning, building and engineering— Wohlford’s study revealed a current overall annual subsidy of $2,253,000 from the general fund, with an overall cost recovery rate for fee services of 36 percent.

Wohlford’s study went on to clarify that, “All three departments/divisions currently have significant fee subsidies,” and suggestion that the “primary cost-recovery opportunity is increased fees toward full cost, not new fees.”

Five things Dana Point should know this week Historical Inventory Update to be Presented to Planning Commission, City Council THE LATEST: Dana Point community members met to discuss the city’s evolving historic inventory during a public session meeting at City Council chambers on Sept.

In the public session, Dana Point Senior Planner John Ciampa explained the update to the inventory that began in 2015.

Re-evaluating the 73 properties originally identified in the city’s first historic inventory completed in 1997 by AEGIS, the 2015 update, managed by a Historic Preservation Firm called Architecture Resources Group (ARG), focused heavily on post-World War ll properties.

After submitting a draft of the updated inventory to community stakeholders such as the Dana Point Historic Society and Capo Cares, ARG developed three main criteria for historic resource recognition.

WHAT’S NEXT: Ciampa said after the historic inventory is updated, it will be presented to the Planning Commission to be recommended for City Council approval.

City Council will then adopt the inventory update and provide policy direction on the recommendation. Property owners curious to see if they meet historic standards or how to register for the historic registry, should visit the city’s website at www. danapoint.org. —Daniel Ritz

ArtFest Returns to Del Prado on Oct. 1 THE LATEST: Dana Point is ringing in National Arts and Humanities Month by lining the streets of Del Prado Avenue with almost 100 local artists in its fifth installment of the Dana Point ArtFest on Sunday, Oct. 1.

Artists who will be present range from high-end painters featured in the esteemed galleries of Laguna Beach and beyond, to eccentric and whimsical novelty craftsmen. Reporting more than 1,000 attendees last year, ArtFest returns in new and improved form this fall with the addition of musical acts, including The Sam Shepherd Trio.

Nancy Jenkins, chairman of the Arts and Culture Committee of Dana Point, is excited about the new musical element included in this year’s ArtFest.

“It’s truly a celebration of the arts and community coming together,” Jenkins said. “We want to start an artistic movement in Dana Point.”

‘Opioid and Heroin Crisis’ to be Addressed in Oct. 2 Presentation THE LATEST: On Monday, Oct. 2, State Assemblyman Bill Brough and State Senator Patricia Bates, in partnership with the Capistrano Unified School District and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, will host a presentation on the “opioid and heroin crisis” in South Orange County,

and how it affects local families.

The event will run from 6-8 p.m. at the San Juan Hills High School Performing Arts Center, located at 29211 Stallion Ridge in San Juan. Speakers will include representatives from OCSD, U.S. Border Patrol, the Orange County Health Care Agency, Capistrano Unified School District and UCI Medical Center. Assistance resources and experts will also be on hand at the event.

Financial Review Committee Discusses User Fee Study Results THE LATEST: The Dana Point Financial Review Committee met to discuss the results of the 2016 Cost of Services Study in City Council chambers on Sept. 27.

The study, led by Chad Wohlford, MPPA, of Wohlford Consulting, is the first since Dana Point’s last fee survey in 2005.

It revealed signifigant differentials in user fees and service costs to the city.

Wohlford explained that user fees are defined as, “a fee or rate charged to an individual or group that receives private benefit from services provided by the city.”

He explained that these are not taxes, as a user fee is usually a discretionary activity requested by the fee payer, i.e., permits.

Harbor Advisory Council Dissolved, Parks Commission Ad Hoc Committee Proposed THE LATEST: On Sept. 22, the Orange County Parks Commission voted to rescind the Dana Point Harbor Advisory Council that was approved last May. A new Parks Commission Ad Hoc Committee is proposed to assist Orange County Parks in balancing the needs of the diverse harbor community.

O.C. Parks documents described the duties and responsibilities of the Ad Hoc Committee as a “forum for public input and outreach regarding the Harbor Revitalization” and to “facilitate constructive dialogue between a broad-based representation of Harbor stakeholders.”

James Lenthall, president of the Dana Point Boaters Association, was disappointed by the decision to shut down the Advisory Council. He described the Ad Hoc as more of a “town hall” than a true committee by definition, and did not feel that this supported the type of accountability necessary between the community, commissioned representatives and governing bodies.

WHAT’S NEXT: The Ad Hoc Committee will consist of three Orange County Park Commissioners appointed by Orange County Parks Commission during a regular meeting. Lenthall and the Dana Point Boaters Association recently revealed that they will move forward in creating a Dana Point Advisory Board, working in close partnership with the Dana Point Merchants Association. —DR www.danapointtimes.com

Aegis Living Employee Wins $50,000 The president of Aegis Living, Judy Meleliat, said the most important reason they take part in an annual cash and gift giveaway for their staff is that, “We attempt to transform someone’s life, because that is what every one of our employees does every day.”

Maria Garcia De Cervantes, the longest tenured housekeeper at Aegis Living, is feeling transformed, to the tune of $50,000.

On Sept. 27, at their facility on Camino de Estrella in Capistrano Beach, surrounded by family and friends, a tearfully grateful Cervantes was handed an oversized check by the Aegis executive staff visiting from their headquarters in Seattle.

“I cannot think of a better person to have this than Maria,” said Eric Medor, general manager of the Aegis Dana Point facility. “I’ve worked in this industry a long time, and Maria is absolutely the best.”

Selected at random in a pool of over 2,300 employees, Meleliat described Cervantes’ selection as a karmic coincidence.

Upon receiving the check, Cervantes told the Dana Point Times that she couldn’t believe it when she found out.

“It’s just too much. It’s too much money for me. I want to thank everyone, we all work so hard. I can’t believe this happened to me.”

Cervantes, married for 33 years, says the first thing she plans to do with the money is to go on a honeymoon with her husband, which they could not financially support at the time of their marriage.

Ocean Institute Hosts Author and Activist David Helvarg On Sept. 21, the Ocean Institute hosted a discussion led by esteemed environmental activist David Helvarg, who recently released a book entitled, The Golden Shore.

Helvarg took the standing-room-only crowd on a journey of history and geography of the 1,100-mile California coastline.

An experienced journalist, as well as the executive director of Blue Frontier, an ocean conservancy and policy group, Helvarg led a discussion of the changing

A questions and answer session followed the presentation, where Helvarg discussed his opinions on more focused local issues, including the nuclear decommissioning and disposal process at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Stations (SONGS).

t’s evident from recent natural disasters, such as the hurricanes that slammed our southern states, fires in the northwest, and the earthquake in Mexico, that being prepared in case of an emergency is something we should all be proactive about, especially with September being National Preparedness Month.

We can all agree Orange County is a wonderful place to live, work and play, but the beauty of our area can easily distract us from the reality that a disaster can arise at a moment’s notice. While we are blessed to live in one of the greatest regions of the world, Southern California is susceptible to some of the most damaging natural disasters, including fires, earthquakes, storms, flooding and even tsunamis.

We all know how devastating these disasters can be, but I’ll bet that few of us have done much to ensure we’re prepared should a major emergency occur. You don’t need to be a ‘doomsday prepper’ with stockpiles of food in an underground bunker like you see on TV, but there are certainly simple steps we can take to be ready. It’s as easy as counting to three: get a kit, make a plan and be informed.

Get a Kit: The first step you can take is to assemble an emergency kit for your home, work and car. You never know when a disaster will strike, so it’s crucial you are prepared regardless of where

We are a nation of special observances. There is even a World Day for Farm Animals, observed on Oct. 2 (Gandhi’s birthday). Apparently it’s intended to memorialize the tens of billions of animals abused and killed for food.

Like most others, I always thought of farm animals as “food on the hoof.”

But when a friend sent me an amazing, endearing Facebook video, it dawned on me that farm animals are much like our family dog, fully deserving of our compassion and respect.

My internet search showed that they get neither. Male chicks are routinely suffocated in plastic garbage bags or ground up alive. Laying hens are crowded into small wire cages that tear

Breeding sows are kept pregnant in tiny metal crates. Dairy cows have their babies snatched away immediately upon birth, so we can drink their milk.

It was enough to drive someone to drink. Instead, it drove me to replace the animal products in my diet with a rich variety of plant-based meats and dairy items offered by my grocery store. I have since learned that a cruelty-free diet is also great for my health and for the health of our planet.

A

s is the case with every comedian who gains superstardom, there comes a point in the middle of their career where they have to figure out where to take the next step before their shtick becomes overexposed. Some crossover into dramas— like Robin Williams or Jim Carrey—or choose to be low-key in indie flicks, as did Kristen Wiig. Ben Stiller has smartly chosen to find his mid-career niche with dramedies. This year he has similarly themed family pieces with The Meyerowitz Stories and Brad’s Status, the latter now in theaters.

On the eve of his son Troy’s (Austin Abrams) college touring trip, Brad Sloan (Stiller) suddenly has a mid-life crisis sprung upon him. He wonders if he made the right decision living modestly in the suburbs with his family while running a nonprofit charity organization.

He starts to feel insecure about how his college friends ended up more successful and happier with their lives. He’s even feeling self-conscious over his son possibly being more gifted than he is.

Jenna Fischer plays Brad’s wife, while Michael Sheen, Luke Wilson and Jemaine Clement appear as Brad’s old friends. Brad’s Status is written and directed by Mike White, and is essentially another piece on a middle-aged man’s neurosis over being past his youth. But this time it refreshingly focuses on his relationships with friends and his son, rather than having the lead just hook-up with a much younger woman, which has become such a cliché in this genre.

Brad’s Status is quaint and light-hearted, with some fine performances from Stiller and Abrams. DP

Shiny New Shells

A

s the summer progressed, an abundance of crimson tails and shells populated the shoreline. Exactly like a teenager’s room, full of clothes cast aside that were not fit for the first day of school. Thats right folks, it’s fall here in Southern California. New school year. New school clothes. Even our local, California spiny lobsters (Panulirus interruptus) get ready for picture day in the fall. While we have been enjoying the surf and working on our tans these past few months, our native inhabitants just beneath the waves have been working on their shiny new shells too.

Summer is prime time for lobster growth spurts. With a shell that is inelastic and rigid, our spinys must shed their shells to grow. A lobster wears its skeleton on the outside, a tough exterior built to withstand at least a few armed assaults. When it comes to expanding or growing, the shell is completely inflexible, leaving only one option: rip it off.

An exoskeleton (shell), of fixed size, must be cast-off in the case of progress, so lobsters shed to grow. With the steady increase of lobster abundance in our marine reserves these days, there is the pleasant sight of piles of molts of all shapes and sizes popping up in pockets under the sea and occasionally being pushed onto shore.

Shedding or molting (technically known as Ecdysis), occurs when a lobster extrudes itself from its old shell. Unlike soft-bodied animals, a lobster’s shell doesn’t grow, bringing necessity for this intermediate growth process and grows throughout their lives.

Shortly before molting, several things take place. Calcium moves temporarily from the old shell to hang out in the stomach for the process.

Don’t worry, it will be re-absorbed post-molt to help the new shell harden.

Blood also takes a hike in the interim to assist ON THE OCEAN Julianne E. Steers the body shrink to about a quarter of their normal size and make it easier to disrobe from their old shell. Now, for hydration. Prior to molting, a lobster absorbs lots of water, which causes the new shell to swell, eventually pushing away the old one. Escaping from its old shell may take the lobster anywhere from several minutes to a half hour, depending on environmental conditions and the size of the animal. In our labs, lobsters molt just the same as in the wild and we’ve observed the entire molting process of many of our inhabitants in our live teaching collection over the years.

Now, if our California spiny lobsters were not the modest beings that they are, it would bring a whole new meaning to marine exhibitionists. Such exhibition would make normal lobster life impossible as they would be on the oceanic menu frontand-center, resulting in fewer lobsters in our rocky reefs. Naked and vulnerable post-molt, lobsters tuck away in the secure crevices in our reefs until their shells are solidified and ready for their close-ups.

Sniffing Out Crime with Paw Patrol DANIEL RITZ, DANA POINT TIMES

O

n Sept. 20, Dana Point dog owners gathered at Pines Park to enlist their pups in the Paw Patrol, a new neighborhood watch program initiated by the Dana Point Police Services in order to enable dog walkers to take more active roles in crime prevention within their community.

Wearing their new Dana Point blue “Help Us Sniff Out Crime” bandanas, dogs of all breeds, shapes, and sizes enjoyed the sunny afternoon as their owners learned about the program which, as the organization’s programming states, “is designed to promote police-community partnerships, build relationships with neighbors, and help report suspicious behavior.”

Those interested in the program were able to enroll in a free training class with the Dana Point Police Services Crime Prevention Unit. The class will focus on providing residents with helpful information on how to effectively observe, and report criminal and suspicious behavior.

Often, Single Seniors Say They Look 10 Years Younger

I

n my 23 years of writing newspaper columns and newsletters, one of the most curious and frequent comments I receive from seniors reentering the dating world is: “I look (number) years younger than my age.” They fill in the blank with a number—it’s often 10—but can be more.

While women are more likely to make the comment that they look younger than men, some guys still do it.

Sometimes, children, grandchildren or friends of singles tell the singles that they look younger than their age, hoping to motivate them to get out and date.

Chuck, a widower who lost his wife of 40 years nearly two years ago, said, “I’m in my 70s, but I look like I’m in my 60s.”

My answer to Chuck: “Regarding your age, we’ll let the women you meet decide how old they think you are. Looks are in the eyes of the beholder.”

Dave, who turns 82 ON LIFE AND this week and is also a LOVE AFTER 50 widower, wrote, “My carBy Tom Blake diac surgeon calls me his 65-year-old, 82-year-old. I’m blessed with my mother’s genes.”

On my FindingLoveAfter50.com website, I posted a poem that Dave sent me when he was 81. The introduction to the poem indicates his age. This week, he wrote, “Would you please remove my age from the introduction? Stating my age has no relevance.”

At least he didn’t ask me to lower it.

Apparently, he refers single women to his poem on the website, but doesn’t want them to know his true age. Regarding this week’s birthday, he said: “It’s like turning a young 72.”

Wouldn’t it just be easier to state his true age and convince women via his activities and physical fitness that he doesn’t act 82?

Les, 91, San Clemente widower, has no qualms about revealing his age. He’s a highly decorated World War II veteran and proud of it. He lets his photograph do the talking.

When I showed friends his picture, they said, “Les is very handsome; he looks about 80.”

Les added, “Tom, remember, I am 91. I’m slowing down, but I do enjoy going places.”

Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler, 69, doesn’t worry about his age and how he looks. His girlfriend, Aimee, 28, is 40-years younger than Tyler. Aimee is more than a decade younger than his eldest daughter, Liv, who is 40. For Tyler, it’s not how young he thinks he looks, it’s what he does with his life that matters.

A man named Larry emailed and said, “I have dated women 10 to 23 years younger for my entire life and would not want to Page 9

meet a woman my age. Having perused the dating sites for four years, virtually all women listed think they look much younger than their age. Let me assure you, they don’t. Fortunately, I still have the physique of an athlete, and younger women continue to find me attractive.”

Oh my.

This week, a woman named Judy emailed and said, “I am 74, but look 64. I would like to meet somebody who is trustworthy and enjoys the beach. Divorced several years, but not able to find a match. Please help me find that special someone.”

Judy’s comment made me think of the refrain from the Beatles song, “When I’m Sixty-Four.”

“Will you still need me, will you still feed me? When I’m sixty-four.”

Judy should forget how old she looks and simply get involved with activities she enjoys and get out of the house and meet new people. In that way, she might capture the eye of a nice man who, when he sees her in person, won’t care that she’s 74.

Why do so many senior singles say they look younger than they are? Probably because they hope they’ve still got what it takes to reel in a mate.

Another man wrote, “I am 63, but feel 43.”

He did not say he looks 43, he simply said he feels 43. Now, that’s different.

For senior daters, it’s not how old you think you look that is important, it’s your positive attitude and how young you think and how you tackle the adversities life has placed in front of you that determine your attractiveness. It’s what’s inside that counts.

Bouncing Back Shae Foudy returns from injury to compete at Pacific Paddle Games

T

he Pacific Paddle Games mean a great deal to Dana Point’s Shae Foudy.

The 18-year-old stand-up paddleboard phenom grew up in the waters at Doheny State Beach where the Games, the largest event on the SUP calendar, will be held this weekend. A true child of the ocean, Foudy learned how to surf on a longboard in the waves at Doheny when she was just three years old.

At last year’s Pacific Paddle Games, she nearly had the breakthrough she had been looking for since turning professional at the age of 14. She placed third in the women’s technical race and second in the distance race to finish second overall at the SUP world’s equivalent of the Super Bowl.

Her performance vaulted her up to No. 5 in the www.supracer.com world rankings.

But just weeks after her big showing at the Games, Foudy felt a sharp pain in her left knee while out on a run. The pain eventually spread to both legs. She continued to train, but the pain was overwhelming.

A trip to an orthopedic surgeon revealed that Foudy was suffering from Pes Anserine Bursitis, which causes inflammation of a tendon on the inside of the knee.

There is no instant cure, which meant Foudy had to slow down her training, just when she was ready to carry momentum into a new season.

“I literally couldn’t do anything for months. It was gnarly,” Foudy said. “I would have rather broken my bone or tore a tendon because I could have gotten surgery. But with this, it’s a waiting game.”

Sidelined and slightly discouraged, Foudy could not do any strenuous exercise for four months while waiting for the inflammation to die down.

She started to go stir-crazy, sitting around knowing that her competition was out there putting in miles and gaining experience while she wasn’t.

Her condition also began to play tricks on her mind.

She would work up the strength to go out and paddle for half a mile, convincing herself she’d be fine. She returned to shore and felt good, telling herself things were finally beginning to turn around. It was all just a fake out because a day later, the inflammation and tightness would

Pacific Paddle Games 2017: Where, When, How to Watch The Pacific Paddle Games, the largest celebration of stand-up paddleboarding in the sport, will take place at Doheny State Beach Saturday, Sept. 30, to Sunday, Oct. 1.

The Pacific Paddle Games offers a wide range of options for paddlers looking for competition, whether they are novices or world-class SUP racers.

The event will offer technical and distance

races for both professionals and open divisions. There will be professional junior and youth races and prone division races.

The competition kicks off on Saturday with the professional men’s technical trial rounds at 8 a.m. and there will be races until 5:50 p.m. The open division distance races jumpstart Sunday’s offerings and the final awards ceremony will take place at 5 p.m.

Pacific Paddle Games will feature a $60,000 prize pool, which is the largest on the professional SUP calendar.

return and last for another week.

But all of that downtime turned out to be a blessing for Foudy.

She decided that once she was fully healed, she would devote herself to the sport like never before. She had her doubts about her ability to do so, but she made it her mission.

The date circled on her calendar for the big return was Saturday, Sept. 30, 2017.

She knew if she trained hard enough, the Pacific Paddle Games would be the perfect spot for her comeback.

“This injury made me come to the light and see where my life was going and where my career was going,” Foudy said. “Now it’s total devotion. I committed myself and I’m going to give it my all.”

Foudy gained a new sponsorship over the last year and she now rides for Dana Point-based Infinity. One of the local Infinity riders is SUP legend and San Clemente native Candice Appleby. When Foudy was 14 she defeated Appleby, along with some of the best SUP paddlers on the planet, at the Santa Monica Pier Paddle race, for her first big professional win. Foudy and Appleby, the most accomplished female SUP paddler in the sport, have become fast friends over the years and they are now training partners.

Foudy and Appleby train five times a week together, pushing each other while working on their skills in the water.

Foudy had to relearn how to use the strength in her lower body in order to

finish the grueling training sessions. She said she is feeling stronger and stronger every week.

Foudy, now the 14th-ranked SUP paddler in the world, has competed just once on the professional circuit since the injury, at the Colombia Gorge Paddle Challenge in Oregon on Aug. 20. She placed 11th overall, including a fourth-place finish in the women’s elite course race.

It was a promising start, she thought.

But now the big test is here. She’s been waiting for the moment long enough.

“There is a lot of symbolism behind this race for me. It’s reclaiming my life and kicking my injury to the side,” Foudy said.

“I want this race to be my comeback. This is my race.” DP

Landgraf Claims Record Third Dana Hills Invitational Title Jack Landgraf had a performance for the record books racing in the Dana Hills Invitational on Sept. 23.

Landgraf, an accomplished cross country runner and the reigning Orange County champion, set a new personal best when he looped the hilly course on Dana Hills’ campus in a winning time of 14:18.

It was the third time Landgraf claimed his program’s invitational, making him the first to do so in the event’s 44-year history.

Landgraf’s record-setting day powered the Dolphins to an overall team win in the Division 1 invitational. Dana Hills’ Simon Fuller (fi fth), Caleb Niednagel (13th), Sagan Svoboda (14th), Eddy Wagenseller (16th) and Carrick Denker (21st) rounded out the scoring.

The Dana Hills girls cross country team placed 13th in the Division 1 invitational.

Holly Morales was the fastest runner for the Dolphins, posting a time of 18:47.

Football Keeps Momentum Going in 34-7 Win Over Los Amigos The Dana Hills football team’s 34-7 victory over Los Amigos on Sept. 22 was never in doubt, as the Dolphins jumped out to a comfortable lead and held on the rest of the way to secure their second victory in a row.

Girls Tennis Falls to Tritons in Rivalry Match The San Clemente girls tennis team halted Dana Hills’ four-match winning streak on Sept. 26.

The Tritons, who split the South Coast League title with the Dolphins last year, defeated Dana Hills, 10-8, to take the early lead in the league standings.

The Tritons’ singles players provided the firepower, winning six of a possible nine points in the match. The Dolphins doubles unit also won six points, but it was not enough.

Dana Hills’ record dropped to 7-2 on the season and they are 1-1 in league play.

Boys Water Polo Picks up Important Win The Dana Hills boys water polo team defeated reigning South Coast League champion El Toro 13-5 on Sept. 26.

The Dolphins opened tournament play with a two-set sweep over host-team La Jolla on Sept. 22, then defeated Clairemont, Salpointe Catholic, Santa Fe Christian, Scripps Ranch and Ramona, respectively, to reach the title game. Dana Hills defeated Esperanza in three sets in the finals.

The Dolphins (17-4, 3-0 league) returned to Sea View League play and swept Laguna Hills on Sept. 26.

he perfectly harmonious fusion between a board, it’s rider and a wave is the grail craftsmen like Dana Point artist and surfboard shaper Tyler Warren seek.

“When you get on a board you’ve made, and you don’t have to think, when you’re standing there and the board is connecting your feet to the wave, that’s what it’s all about,” Warren said. “There’s a pureness that’s hard to describe. I guess you’d just call it stoke.”

Trained in the arts and science of surfboard construction by Hobie’s iconic shaper, the late Terry Martin, who whittled an excess of 80,000 boards in more than 50 years behind the planer, Warren’s what you might call a renaissance man. His designs have undertones of bygone, perhaps more Dana Point Times September 29-October 5, 2017

“classic” eras. He shapes all of the boards he rides, testing them out in varying conditions around the world. And when not consumed by foam, dust or salt water, you may find him noodling on his latest painting. A talented fine artist, creativity simply oozes out of the 25-year-old regular-footer.

“With shaping, you have all of the measurements and the numbers. But all of the curves have to come together in the right places,” tells Warren. “So much of it is done by eye and by feel. It’s running your hands down the rails not just seeing, but feeling the curves that are aesthetically pleasing. That’s art. And sometimes you can look at a board and just know it’s going to go good. That’s art. It’s envisioning what you see and creating that with the tools you have. There’s some math there, but once you get started it’s like one big art project.”

Just like oil on canvas, the art of the surfboard is meant to transport one to another place, another mindset. For a surfboard shaper, they’re trying to achieve a oneness between the surfer and the wave.

“If the board is performing well it makes me feel good, and if I feel good, I know the board is performing,” says Warren. “It’s sort of like you can’t have one without the other.”

Like any art form or technological advancement, when it comes to a more perfect union, surfboard design is built on the successes and failures of previous generations. It’s the whole, “good artists borrow,

great artists steal” concept.

“A large part of shaping is looking at successful design ideas of the past and bringing them forward,” continues Warren. “It could be something as easy as taking an old template and reconfiguring it with a more modern or advanced outline.

There’s a lot you can do with the rails or the foil to pay homage to a previous generation, while still giving it very modern characteristics. Bottom contours, fins, even the materials you use can be manipulated to create an offshoot of an idea that came before. As a shaper, you’re building on all of those ideas.”

There’s always an easier way, a road more travelled. New designs, new creations and new artistic endeavors require blood, sweat and courage to push boundaries and to take chances. But what fun would experimentation be without all that?

“I think it’s probably easier if you’re not shaping your boards. I know you’d have more time to surf,” laughs Warren.

“There’s a lot that goes into making your own boards. You have to order the blank, shape it, get it to the glass shop, and then hopefully it’s ready by the time you need it. It would be much easier to just go to a shaper, order ten boards and wait for them to show up. It’s definitely a balancing act, but I really enjoy riding my own shapes and it’s all part of my surfing experience.

I really couldn’t imagine it any other way.”

ometimes all it takes is one wave to make a difference. Look no further than Dana Point’s Hayden Homan.

Recipient of the Andy Irons Charging award at a recent Dana Point Surf Club contest, 12-year-old Homan wasn’t holding anything back in the challenging three- to four-foot pulses.

“He took off on a dry-rock (Salt) Creek set wave, with a Chopes air drop into the pit.

It was mental,” described club co-founder Eric Diamond. “We wanted all the younger kids in the event to have a crack at it, and Hayden was definitely charging hard.”

As far as what you need to know about the little Dana Point hammer thrower, Hayden’s pops taught him to surf when he was only five years old. He’s one of the youngest surfers on the Dana Point Surf Club roster, and as proof that he’s not fully grown up, he lists his dad among his favorite people to surf with. When it comes to getting psyched on surfing, his favorites include John John Florence, Filipe Toledo and local boy Kolohe Andino. He’s also a heavy consumer of surf videos for that pre-surf amp.

When asked what it means to be part of the Dana Point Surf Club his answer was spot on: “family, fun and friends!”
