Five things Dana Point should know this week City of Dana Point Seeking Candidates for Parking and Circulation Oversight Task Force THE LATEST: At its last meeting on Nov. 7, City Council approved the formation of a Parking and Circulation Oversight Task Force. This task force will serve as an advisory committee to City Council to identify and address parking solutions in Dana Point.

City Council is seeking one member of the public to serve on the Task Force as well as one member of the Dana Point business community. In order to qualify for appointment, members of the public must be a resident and registered voter within the city of Dana Point. Applications can be obtained from the office of the City Clerk.

Other members of the Oversight Task Force are to include Council Member Joe Muller, as the elected City Council representative, one Planning Commissioner and one member of the Traffic Improvement Committee.

The board approved funding for a solar feasibility study back in May, and on July 26, the board heard an update on that study, which found that all of the sites in question are able to accommodate the solar panels, and that the project would result in net savings for the district and reduce the district’s utility bill by roughly 44 percent over a 25-year period.

On Sept. 25, the district released its Requests for Proposals for the solar project. Russell Driver, of ARC Alternatives, reported that the district received 13 proposals on Oct. 20 from a wide variety of firms, ranging from local to national companies. Driver added that it’s the “greatest number of proposals he’s ever seen,” making it an “incredibly competitive” bid.

The district is currently evaluating the 13 proposals, so Driver didn’t share much detail about the bids on Nov. 8. He did mention that any trees removed as part of the project would have to be replaced onsite at the contractor’s expense.

Funds for the district’s solar project would come from the government’s new Clean Renewable Energy Bonds (CREBS) that are available solely for energy projects, according to staff. Driver told the trustees that the goal is for the district’s savings to pay off the debt accrued.

Driver reported that all 13 proposals received came in under the district’s $23-24 million CREBS budget, which was established based on cost estimating that was done during the feasibility study.

Trustees discussed changes to the dress code at their Nov. 8 meeting, but couldn’t come to a consensus on how specific to make the new policy. With Trustee Jim Reardon absent, the rest of the board was split between wanting a generic code versus writing specific guidelines about clothing like tank tops, crop tops and short shots.

WHAT’S NEXT: Superintendent Kirsten Vital recommended the board wait for all trustees to be present at the Dec. 6 meeting to vote on the new dress code policy.

THE LATEST: On Nov. 15, South Coast Water District (SCWD) held its fifth and final Project Delivery Board Workshop. At the meeting, SCWD’s Board of Directors voted unanimously to move forward with SCWD General Manager Andrew Brunhart’s staff recommendation to proceed with planning using a district-owned delivery option.

This vote establishes, as stated in the staff report, that SCWD may “enter into some form of design-build-operate contract for the final design, construction of the facility, and operation and maintenance.”

n addition to the athletic competitions, costume contests and entertaining mascots, the Dana Point Turkey Trot, celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, continues to honor the traditional social values of Thanksgiving.

The Dana Point Chamber of Commerce will carry out its long-standing tradition of donating 100 percent of the event’s proceeds to nonprofit community partners that help strengthen the community through educational and service programs. This year, the Dana Point Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post #9934 and Family Assistance Ministries have been selected as the beneficiaries of profits from this nationally-recognized event.

highly-recognized post, regularly winning awards for their top-notch care of the region’s veterans. As a beneficiary last year, the post received over $10,000 from the funds raised at Turkey Trot.

Wayne Yost, VFW Post #9934 Commander, explained that the money goes into a general fund that assists veterans in a wide variety of social, educational and economic manners.

For example, VFW Post #9934 supports more than 3,300 families located at Camp Pendleton, largely as the official “sponsor” of Marine Aircraft Group 39 (MAG 39), a United States Marine Corps aviation unit.

With a large number of the men and women in MAG 39 currently deployed,

VFW post #9934 provides necessary assistance to those Marines and their families that remain on the ground here at home.

This year, MAG 39 will be making a special appearance in the Dana Point Turkey Trot, as Sgt. Major Valerie A. Camacho has gathered 11 female members of MAG 39 that will partake in the day’s activities.

“The ladies within the MAG are working together to better our relations with the community, along with our sisters in the Corps. Throughout the year, we plan to organize events in support of empowering the ladies within the MAG. We had our first leadership symposium in August in order to assist in the development of the ladies personally and professionally.”

Giving Back with (FAM) Family Assistance Ministries (FAM) is a faith-based nonprofit organization based in San Clemente with a satellite location in Dana Point that assists those in need with resources such as food, shelter and personalized support counsel aimed toward bridging the gap from dependency to selfsufficiency.

Last year alone, FAM was able to transition seven Dana Point individuals into permanent housing.

FAM Executive Director Mary Gray Perdue, a member of Dana Point’s Homeless Task Force, pointed out that in addition to providing essential assistive care to the homeless, a “housing first” approach has been proven in recent studies to cut the costs of homelessness by up to 50 percent.

“At FAM, we recognize that homelessness isn’t black and white. We need to be fluid; we need to be mobile. We are so grateful for the support of the Chamber of Commerce in this donation and continuing our mission,” Perdue said.

ut of an inescapable curiosity, I attended a forum about the current state of the waste storage for the radioactive fuel rods that have been untreated since the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) has been shut down. It was an illuminating experience, even if some of the speakers had conflicting positions on how great the danger is and what the best solution should be.

One of the most critical issues facing the entire Orange County area, this dilemma of how to deal with the spent fuel rods from our nuclear power plant is perhaps the most important decision the region will make for our children and all future history. These highly toxic, potentially lethal rods now lie in open pools of water in what all parties agree is a vulnerable and dangerous state.

Joni Mitchell’s familiar refrain, “Don’t it always seem to go, that you don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone’”, warns against taking the things you love for granted. And while Mitchell was referring to paradise, trees, pure food and her boyfriend, her message resonates with one of the key threads in the fabric of any small town—local businesses.

We live in paradise. Not only do we live on an incomparable coastline and rolling hills, we are surrounded by wonderful neighbors and lifestyles. However, a critical component of our lives and these towns are the storefronts we drive past every day and the shopkeepers and employees working hard to make their dream a reality by offering you something they believe in so much that they have devoted their very lives to present it to you. Recently, the emergence of point-and-click shopping obscures the reality that operating a successful small business, while never an easy road, is more challenging than ever.

Without defending or attacking the claims or validity, it should be noted that these are also near a vital military base on an earthquake fault line and on a dramatically eroding coastal ridgeline. Whether there is high likelihood or little, the fact is that if a catastrophic event was to occur it could render large potions of this region uninhabitable for the foreseeable future—as in millennia. One would think that this would be a point of concern for those of us living in this shadow.

WAVELENGTHS And yet when I bring

By Jim Kempton this subject up to surfers at San Onofre, citizens in South Orange County or political leaders in Orange County I get a shrug or a glazed look.

I am always amazed. We are able to bring thousands of determined citizens to protest the extension of a toll road. But burying thousands upon thousands of pounds of radioactive waste material 50 yards from the beach in canisters that only guarantee the lifetime of 30 years, which if exposed incorrectly could be catastrophic to the entire region, brings barely a yawn.

It is not that we might be in incalculable peril that worries me. It is that for the most part, the entire populace including most of the decision-makers seem only minimally informed.

I am not going to get into the heavy debate about how critical the various risks are. But we do know at least a few things: Southern California Edison, the majority owner of SONGS, has not been forthcoming in its communication with the public about this issue—they have a long record of repeated dissembling of inaccurate and incomplete information about the risk, the responsibility and the reasoning behind the proposed plans. Neither, it seems, have any of the auxiliary entities involved.

And experts disagree strongly.

I am not advocating any position on this issue. I am suggesting that educating oneself from a variety of sources should be a paramount priority for anyone who owns property here or is planning to live in the area for any length of time.

in the stands at the local homecoming game, cheering on the kids at a local surf contest or helping the local family that lost their home in a fire. That level of community involvement happens when the business owner lives in your neighborhood, works down the block, plays hoops at the local park or paddles out at your local break. The truth is, the vast majority of proprietors in our towns do just that.

They’re sponsoring the little league teams, manning the BBQ at the game, giving discounts to the kids when they get a good report card, or just waving to you when you meet on the sidewalk. They’ve been there for years so you might even take them for granted, but trust me they never take your patronage for granted. Not for a minute, and if they ever do leave, our towns will lose a part of what makes them so special, thread-by-thread, storefront by storefront. It would be more than a shame.

It would be tragic and we would all lose.

Please consider doing your part to help maintain the soul of our towns. Get off the computer, get out of your car and walk our sidewalks to rediscover the incredibly unique shops just down the street. It’s easy, it’s fun and you’ll discover some cool goods and services that you can’t find online while meeting some pretty nice folks in the process.

Thankfully, most of the people I talk to “get it” and understand that the quality of their lives depends in part on the holistic

integrity of the community that surrounds them. The health of our town is akin to the health of our bodies, and online shopping is like fast food. It’s something to eat, but it sure ain’t home cookin’.

Thousands will gather in the early hours of Thursday, Nov. 23, for the 40th annual Dana Point Turkey Trot where families, friends, neighbors, teams, clubs and volunteers race in, cheer on and support contestants in these yearly seaside races.

This holiday season marks the Dana Point Chamber of Commerce’s 40th year bringing novice and experienced competitors of all ages together to race along the scenic (mostly flat) course snaking through the Dana Point Harbor, Doheny State Beach and alongside California’s famed Pacific Coast Highway.

The 10K (6.2 miles) and 5K (3.1 miles) races will see costumed fun and fast-paced competition, but the day’s final event, the 1-mile Kids’ Gobble Wobble packs the highest levels of energy and excitement as racers aged 5 to 12 take to the course.

een movies, much like movie musicals or romantic comedies, are a genre that have become a niche in the film industry and general audiences over time. Despite the success of the genre in the past, it’s now become a rare occurrence to find a new feature centered on teens dealing with their own issues. Indie cinema appears to be where the teens are nowadays.

The Edge of Seventeen and Sing Street were both modest hits last year and critical darlings, and this year it’s definitely going to be Greta Gerwig’s directorial debut Lady Bird.

During her final year of high school at a private Catholic school in Sacramento, Christine McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) changes her name to “Lady Bird” as an attempt to be unique. She also joins the

musical theatre department, applies to East Coast schools, that she thinks are out of her league, and casually dates fellow musical performer Danny O’Neill (Lucas Hedges) and hipster guitarist Kyle Scheible (Timothée Chalamet).

Laurie Metcalf and Tracy Letts play Lady Bird’s parents. Lady Bird takes place in 2002-2003 and perfectly captures what it was like to be a teenager in that era. The title character is loosely based on Gerwig’s own youth growing up in Sacramento, and she treats the city with the same love as John Hughes did with Chicago 30 years ago. Ronan takes an odd career decision to play a teenager again at age 22, but it isn’t distracting and she’s effortlessly endearing. Lady Bird is a quaint and charming teen comedy for November. Driftwood at Doheny State Beach Draws Thousands to Country Music Festival

riftwood at Doheny State Beach drew thousands to Dana Point on Nov. 11 and Nov. 12 in a weekend-long celebration with more than 40 craft breweries, barbecue and country music.

Artists such as Gethen Jenkins, RaeLynn, Canaan Smith, Maddie and Tae, Dan and Shay, and Kip Moore spoke early and often of the Pacific Ocean’s one-of-akind concert venue backdrop.

“I stepped off the tour bus this morning, and I couldn’t believe it. I still can’t,” said Canaan Smith, taking a breather from his Nov. 12 performance that ignited a meandering crowd.

After Smith’s sunset show, all eyes were focused on the main stage for the remainder of the evening. Dan and Shay serenaded a swooning crowd with sing-along radio favorites such as “How Not To” and “Road Trippin,” before an Orange County veteran was invited up on the stage in

honor of Veterans Day. After some heartfelt words of honor and service, much to the crowd’s surprise, the veteran took a knee before his speechless partner and proposed to her on stage.

Disclaimer: She said yes.

However, Veterans Day was not the only event on the attendees’ minds. Countless fans that had also attended the Route 91 Music Festival in Las Vegas held signs reading “Pray for Vegas,” “#StillHere” and “#VegasStrong.”

“It’s a different venue and you can’t let the terrible actions of one person ruin a good time for all these good people,” said Rachel Lincoln of Los Angeles.

Driftwood closed out the show with day two headliner Kip Moore, of Nashville, Tennessee, as he stormed on stage and launched into his set without a word. Cross Country Teams On Course for CIFSS Finals The Dana Hills boys and girls cross country teams got the job done last week competing in the CIF-SS Division 1 Cross Country Prelims in Riverside. Both teams competed against the best programs the Southland has to offer and qualified for the CIF-SS Division 1 Finals on Saturday, Nov. 18.

The girls team finished third in its heat. The Dolphins were led by Leila Keyvan’s 13th-place finish (17:54) and Sarah Meng’s 16th-place effort (18:04). A solid packrunning group of Lauren Soto, Marisa Gaitan, Anna Fodor and Holly Morales placed 23rd through 26th, respectively.

The boys team placed fourth in its heat. Senior Jack Landgraf (15:14) earned a ninth-place finish to lead the group. Garrett Hough placed 13th and Hayden Stein finished 26th.

These Dolphin teams are no stranger to the podium in the postseason. Both teams placed second at the CIF-SS Finals one year ago.

Tennis Trio Heads to CIF-SS Individual Tournament A strong trio of Dana Hills girls tennis players will compete in the CIF-SS Division 1 Individual Championships on Monday, Nov. 20. The site of the tournament was undetermined at press time.

In his weekly fishing report, Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching Captain Brian Wooley outlined how, despite the cooler temperatures, the surface fishing has yielded lots of prized bonito.

Bass, sheephead and rockfish are still being reeled in regularly and Dana Wharf’s Halibut Derby leaderboard keeps on fluctuating. However, a 25.1-pounder currently sits at the top.

Rally to Help Tom Morey

Campaign launched to assist inventor of the ‘Boogie Board’

T

om Morey’s creative life first blossomed in the 1940s as a jazz drummer. Originally hailing from Detroit, Michigan, somehow from an early age he had the rhythm of the Pacific in his veins. By his teen years he’d landed in Laguna Beach and Dana Point where surfing—and innovating—took hold of him.

In 1954, Morey invented what he called the “concave nose pocket,” which helped surfers hang ten with greater ease. A decade later he created the first removable fin system. He also played host to the first “professional” surf contest in Ventura in ’71. But all of that pales in comparison to the invention the name Morey would forever be tied to: the boogie board.

In the early 1970s, after quitting his day job as an engineer at Boeing and becoming somewhat disenchanted with the surf scene, Morey moved to Hawaii to shape surfboards and get away from it all. As legend has it, on July 9, he started tinkering

with some closed-cell polyethylene packing foam he had laying around. He carved out the world’s first boogie board, a crude board that stood 4-foot-6-inches long and two inches thick. The craft would change the wave-riding world forever.

“There was no turning back at that point. Plus, I found out that I could shape the foam using iron if I put a sheet of the Honolulu Advertiser down on it first. Later that night, I drew a few curves on the foam with a red marker pen and went to bed,” Morey would later say.

A few test drives at a surf spot called Honl’s Beach on the west side of the Big

Island and he knew he was on to something.

“I could actually feel the wave through the board,” he reveled. “On a surfboard, you’re not feeling the nuance of the wave, but with my creation, I could feel everything. I was thinking it turns, it’s durable, it can be made cheaply, it’s lightweight, it’s sage. God, this could be a really big thing.”

Seizing on the opportunity, within six months Morey signed a licensing deal with Larry Smith of G&S Surfboards. After seeing the first order of boards come in, Morey immediately went out and trademarked the name Morey Boogie. The rest,

hen Hurricane Irma barreled through the Caribbean in September, the storm left chaos and destruction in its wake. The swell it created was massive and tragically ended up claiming the life of a 16-year-old, up-and-coming surfer from Barbados named Zander Venezia. Two months down the track, the Live Like Zander Junior Pro, in memory of Venezia, just concluded in Barbados, and it was a pair of San Clemente protégées who swept the podium.

On the women’s side of the draw, Kirra Pinkerton claimed her first WSL pro junior victory.

“It feels amazing to win my first junior event, and to do it here is extremely special,” Pinkerton said. “This event means everything to me and I’m donating my prize money to the Zander Venezia Foundation. I Dana Point Times November 17-23, 2017

as they say, is history.

It’s hard to say how many millions of people have been fortunate enough to ride a wave courtesy of the boogie board, but it’s fair to say that Morey’s responsible for introducing more people to the joys of the ocean than just about anybody.

And now it’s time to pay it forward.

Battling age and struggling to make ends meet, bodyboard legend Mike Stewart, along with Morey’s other friends and family, have put together a fundraising campaign to help offset some costs and ease the burden.

“Rather than seeking financial wealth, Tom’s mission for gain is the spread of stoke and unity,” the fundraising description stated. “In his mind, the world can always be a better place. This selfless path has given Tom some internal fulfillment, but created financial hardship in these final years of his life.”

Morey’s has indeed been a life well-lived and enjoyed. His whole goal was always to make sure people were stoked. How noble is that? He could have cashed in on his invention (or inventions). If he’d played his cards differently, the argument could be made that he’d be monetarily rich, but then he’d probably argue he was spiritually poor. Morey was always too much of a mad scientist, too much of an improvisational jazz man, too much of a surfer to be a business man. And bless him for it. For her effort, Pinkerton climbed up the WSL ratings and has qualified to participate in the World Junior Championships at Kiama, Australia, in January.

“I’ll start to get ready for worlds and keep training, but I’ll enjoy this moment for a while,” noted the 16-year-old Pinkerton.

For the men, Cole Houshmand kept his winning ways going with a well-deserved first-place finish.

“The people, this wave, this place as

a community is incredible, and I can’t imagine a better way to end this year,” said Houshmand after the awards ceremony. “This win is so special, just being in memory of Zander, it’s a big honor to earn this one. I’m looking forward to returning next year and trying to defend this win and see my surfing match where I’ve grown, both physically and mentally.”
