Five things Dana Point should know this week Hurley Pro, Trestles Eliminated from 2018 World Surf League Championship Tour Schedule THE LATEST: A statement released by the World Surf League (WSL) on Nov. 20 revealed that the Hurley Pro and Swatch Pro surfing competition at Lower Trestles has been eliminated as a stop on the World Championship Tour (WCT).

“As we move into a new era of professional surfing, it’s reassuring to have the support of the WSL and a commitment to putting the world’s best surfers in the world’s best waves,” said Adrian Buchan, WCT competitor and athlete representative. “Whilst we are disappointed at losing Fiji and Trestles for 2018, we are really excited to be returning to Keramas, Indonesia for the inaugural Surf Ranch event. I have no doubt that the 2018 season will be injected with some fresh excitement from these new venues.”

Other key changes to the 2018 WSL Championship tour include an event at Kelly Slater’s Surf Ranch in Lemoore, California, the addition of an event at Keramas, Bali, Indonesia, and the elimination of Cascais, Portugal and Fiji.

WHAT’S NEXT: The 2018 WCT schedule is set to begin in Australia for the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast on March 11. The season is set for 11 events, concluding with the traditional Billabong Pipe Masters on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, on Dec. 8. As of press time, a schedule for future surfing events at Trestles through World Surf League was unable to be confirmed.

Dana Point Local Creates Ocean Awareness Run In Washington D.C. THE LATEST: Jack Anderson, an employee of the Ocean Institute in Dana Point and a college senior at the University of California-Irvine, has begun a multi-faceted fundraiser called the Ocean Awareness Run to take place on Saturday, Dec. 2 in Washington D.C. and four other University of CaliforniaWashington D.C. (UCDC) internship members will run 32 miles from the stairs of the Washington Monument to the shores of the Chesapeake Bay in an effort to educate and unite the ocean community as well as raise funds for the upcoming March for the Ocean event on June 9.

Anderson, a history major pursuing law school, is currently partaking in an internship program where students from California are housed while pursuing policy making and government. Anderson’s internship is for a nonprofit called Blue Frontier Campaign, a leading international ocean health research group.

Drugs, Counterfeit Bills Found in Late Night Car Wash Arrest THE LATEST: Denis Alan Winsby, 55, a local transient, has been charged with two felonies and two misdemeanors after being arrested by Dana Point Community Services Deputy Chris Eiben near Doheny Village in the early hours of the morning on Nov. 16.

Officer Chris Eiben approached Winsby near Las Vegas Ave. when he noticed Winsby using a local business’ hose to wash his vehicle. Upon approaching Winsby, Eiben saw drugs and paraphernalia in plain view within the vehicle.

Upon searching the vehicle, Eiben found methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia as well as four counterfeit $20 dollar bills, a multi-function color printer, a paper cutter, thick paper and ink.

On the scene, Winsby admitted to unsuccessfully attempting to produce the fake bills and unsuccessfully attempting to pass them at local businesses.

WHAT’S NEXT: Winsby was booked into the Orange County Jail on felony charges of forgery and possession of a counterfeiting device, as well as misdemeanor charges of possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia. As with all cases involving counterfeiting, the United States Secret Service was notified of the circumstances. —DR

Public Watchdogs Files Lawsuit to Stop Burial of Spent Nuclear Waste at SONGS THE LATEST: An organization that scrutinizes government activity is making a

last effort to prevent the storage of spent nuclear fuel rods at San Onofre.

Public Watchdogs, a nonprofit organization based in La Mesa, filed a lawsuit in federal court on Nov. 15 against the United States government, the Department of Defense and Secretary James Mattis, as well as Southern California Edison (SCE), the operators of San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS), and San Diego Gas and Electric (SDGE) to prevent the storage of more than 3.6 million pounds of radioactive fuel rods.

The lawsuit claims that under Public Law 88-82, a declaration from 1963 that allows the secretary of the Navy to authorize a permit for the nuclear power plant, storage of the spent nuclear waste was not authorized in the law.

The Navy owns the land where SONGS and Camp Pendleton are established.

Public Watchdogs is seeking an injunction that would find the “storage of spent nuclear fuel at SONGS is not authorized by, and is outside the scope of the authority granted to the Federal Defendants under, Public Law 88-82,” as well as “an order or judgment enjoining Federal Defendants from authorizing SCE and SDGE from storing spent nuclear fuel at SONGS and further enjoining SCE and SDGE from storing spent fuel at SONGS. Charles Langley, the executive director of Public Watchdogs, said the goal of the lawsuit is to stop the storage of spent nuclear fuel at SONGS before the process of moving it to the dry cask storage begins before the end of this year.

“I expect an injunction that prohibits the burial of waste at San Onofre,” Langley said on Nov. 16. “Edison promised they would start burying the spent fuel in December…and they’ve accelerated their schedule instead of (starting) in 2018 as they originally planned.”

Langley referenced a legal settlement between Southern California Edison and another watchdog organization, Citizens’ Oversight Projects, that required the utility company to establish a plan to move the fuel and additional safety procedures, but it doesn’t hold the operators to specific timelines regarding when the fuel can be stored.

The settlement was based on a lawsuit filed by Citizens’ Oversight after the California Coastal Commission issued a permit in 2015 for Edison to store the spent nuclear fuel, after the federal government could not find a place for it. The fuel was originally intended to be stored at Yucca Mountain in Nevada, before that site was shuttered.

THE LATEST: A hearing for the suit, which was filed in U.S. District Court in the Southern District of California, has not yet been scheduled, Langley said.

Urban Bicycle Outfitters will donate the elves, assembling and delivering high-quality boys and girls 20-inch bikes–sturdy enough to be handed down to younger siblings—in time for the holiday festivities.

Bikes are $125 each, including tax. (In a bike shop, these bikes sell for up to $220).

The window for donations closes on Sunday, Dec. 10, though the business stated it will try to accommodate further donations while inventories last.

Red Cross Offers Three Ways to Make Saving Lives Easier Than Ever The holidays are known for a giving spirit and a hectic pace. This holiday season, the American Red Cross is sharing three ways to give the gift of life in less time. Mobile and online tools help make donating blood and platelets more convenient.

At this time of year, many regular blood and platelet donors delay giving due to busy schedules, but the need for blood remains. To help donors fit in a donation, the Red Cross offers three easy ways to make helping save lives faster and more convenient. With RapidPass, donors can complete their pre-donation reading and health questions online to save about 15 minutes at their donation. With the Blood Donor App, users can find local blood drives and donation centers, schedule an appointment, receive appointment reminders and keep track of total blood donations from their phones. Donors can also conveniently schedule an appointment and find tips for a successful blood or platelet donation at www.redcrossblood.org.

“The Red Cross is thankful for the generosity of donors who help keep hospital shelves stocked with lifesaving blood products, but we know that the holiday activities that we cherish most can make it difficult for many regular donors to find a moment to donate this time of year,” said Christine Welch, communications manager, Red Cross California Blood Services Region. “We hope technologies like online appointment scheduling, the Blood Donor App and RapidPass will make it a little easier for donors to give more life for patients this holiday season.”

Patients don’t get a holiday break from needing lifesaving transfusions, and all blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply is available. Become a Friend of South Coast Singers South Coast Singers invites people who have already become a Friend of the South Coast Singers for 2017-2018 as well as those who were members last season to support the organization’s efforts. According to a press release from South Coast Singers, the group was able to raise just under $6,000 since launching in 2014.

“These funds have helped us provide quality musicians to enhance the enjoyment of our concerts and support scholarships for gifted high school music students,” the release stated.

The 2017-2018 season will start with the December concerts, “Peppermint Dreams.”

Performances take place at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9 at St. Andrews by-the-Sea in San Clemente, on Saturday, Dec. 16 at Capistrano Valley High School in Mission Viejo and on Dec. 17 at Geneva Presbyterian in Laguna Woods.

Membership dues are $25 for an individual and $40 for a couple.

Friends of South Coast Singers receive 10 free tickets to the music box opportunity drawing held at each concert (20 for a couple membership) and are automatically entered into a drawing for a holiday gift basket held at the final concert.

The Small Majority Dana Point businesses believe staying adaptable, true to values is the key to success

A

merican Express, who officially began Small Business Saturday on Nov. 27, 2010 in an effort to encourage spending at local brick and mortar businesses, lists 3,800,000 small businesses in California. That’s 99 percent of all companies recognized by the state.

This is also reflected in Dana Point, where Dana Point Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Bev Jorgensen estimates 98 percent of the Chamber’s 300 plus businesses qualify as a small business.

With changing trends in how consumers spend money, local businesses have had to evolve to stay competitive and financially successful. In Dana Point, local companies believe staying adaptable, being attentive to the needs of the community and staying true to their values through the waves of change will ensure they stay around for generations to come.

The fundamentals of innovation Jake Schwaner, a managing partner at Hobie Surf Shop, has experienced more than his fair share of change in his 20 plus years with the outdoor retailer bearing the name of one of Dana Point’s most iconic craftsman and waterman.

longevity has to do with their purposeful scaling to be able to focus on the community, and concentrate on customer experience.

“Really, we just brought it back to community. We don’t want to pigeon-hole ourselves as any one thing. We’re about the lifestyle we all love,” Schwaner said. “Our values have always been the same: innovation, quality, community and service.”

Schwaner suspects the millennial generation, now having surpassed the baby boomers in population numbers, is more focused on experience.

“It’s (millennials) who we’re following, and we think they deserve that experience. I know, it’s kind of a trendy word right now, but we are really focused on that,” Schwaner said. “Not everyone is an ‘Eeyore’ and wants to sit at home on their computer and click to shop.”

Through the rise of e-commerce giants such as Amazon, brick and mortar small businesses are still seeing the attention from holiday season shoppers. Last year, 64 million people visited brick and mortar retail locations on Small Business Saturday, the second busiest day of the year behind Black Friday. Nationwide, both days saw a five percent increase in sales from 2015.

“E-commerce isn’t going away,” Schwaner said, “but brick and mortar will always have its place.”

Schwaner said that large e-commerce and big-box retail chains are rarely inventive with their products, calling ecommerce and big box giants “utilities for consumption.”

“We try and do things like no-one has ever done them. Hobie was built around innovators. We try to keep our finger on the pulse and offer people what they want and what they need. We maintain that authenticity to the community because we aren’t just serving the community; we’re a part of it. You don’t see Jeff Bezos at the

Boehne, 70, who shaped his first surfboard in 1970 while attending California State University-Fullerton, is actively shaping boards and operating Infinity

“We try to be honest, and we try to do what we do best,” said Boehne. “A lot of people ask how we do it, but to be honest, I don’t really know how big businesses do it. In our business, it’s really important that every single customer walks away happy. We care. I can’t help myself but to care because we know we’ll probably see them out in the water one day.”

In a surfboard production industry that has seen radical fluctuations due to overseas production and rising material costs, Boehne sourced his own experience and participation as a key to Infinity’s success.

“Sure, it’s been hard. It has been, and I’m sure it will be again. But we’re out there. We’re in the mix and we are right there when new things happen.”

Infinity, who ran the first advertisement for a stand-up paddleboard more than 15 years ago, was years ahead of the boom and is now on top of the stand-up paddleboard trend.

“We only have the one location; we keep it tight,” said Boehne. “We shape here, we ship here. That way we can be nimble.

Sure we’re small, but we’re the quickest to change.”

This ability to transition and morph over the years has enabled Infinity and the Boehne family to stay relevant and maintain an international reputation as a leader in surfboard, stand-up paddle surf and stand-up paddle racing equipment.

In total, more than 137 million people went to stores over the four-day Black Friday weekend in 2016. Research from Forbes expects those numbers to increase this year. Small businesses in Dana Point hope those trends continue and that small business can remain the healthy majority, growing without necessarily expanding.

Housing is a Hand Up, Not a Hand Out

W

ith National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness week taking place earlier this month, we acknowledge there are a number of homeless men, women, teenagers, children and entire families in our community.

Every two years, the County of Orange conducts the Point-In-Time (PIT) Count, a census administered on a given night of the homeless in our communities.

The PIT Count, which represents a snapshot in time, revealed a troubling trend in 2017 – a 7.6 percent increase in the number of homeless, with THE BARTLETT a total of nearly 4,800 BULLETIN individuals counted.

By Lisa Bartlett Orange County has diligently and compassionately tried to stem this rising tide by building a system of care that meets the needs of this complex and diverse population. Our efforts include increasing shelter capacity, outreach and services, including the following initiatives, among others: • Establishment of The Courtyard, a partnership between the county and The Midnight Mission that provides 400 shelter beds every night • Completion of phase one of Bridges at Kraemer, the county's year-round emergency shelter that provides 100 beds; Phase two, which will provide a total of 200 beds, is slated for completion in May 2018 • Enhancing our efforts to ensure public safety in large encampments • Increasing outreach and service linkages for the homeless

Letters to the Editor NFL KNEELERS EXPRESSIONS ARE ‘VAINGLORIOUS’ MARY FRANTA, San Clemente

Not everyone agrees with these football players, as they kneel during our anthem.

True Americans do not wish to see them disrespect our flag because it is our national symbol of those brave men and women who fought, bled and died for our freedom. Kneeling is disrespectful to our military, our police and our nation. I take deep offense to those who kneel, and I refuse to support the NFL any longer.

The excuse that these kneeling players

As impactful and encouraging as these efforts are, an urgent need remains for more permanent supportive housing.

A recent cost study conducted by the University of California-Irvine and Orange County United Way indicated that $300 million was spent on homelessness within one fiscal year between the county, cities, hospitals, law enforcement agencies and community-based organizations.** Providing stable housing with case management, social and medical services to the most medically fragile homeless individuals would reduce the cost of serving that population by 50 percent per capita, at $100,000 a year for the unsheltered versus $50,000 a year for those in housing.

Chronically homeless individuals with disabilities and who lack stable housing often do not receive the appropriate preventative care or supportive services.

These individuals, who are covered through public health plans, are likely to struggle with severe medical needs, which often results in costly emergency department visits and hospitalizations.

The average cost of health care services give for kneeling is that they say there is unfair treatment of minorities by police.

By kneeling, do these players think that their actions will make the world any safer, stop police brutality or racial inequality? I would be willing to bet that most of the kneelers have not spent one hour or one dime to study these problems and/or provide any sort of remedy to this problem. It’s all vainglory; cry me a river when I visit these players in their $20 million homes. They live in the bubble of their own closed-off world of wealth and fame.

The time to show respect for our nation is during the 90 seconds it takes to stand and place one’s hand over one’s heart to demonstrate gratitude and honor for those who give everything they have for our freedom.

Like any private business in the free world, the NFL can limit what play-

Providing permanent supportive housing for the homeless population with medical disabilities provides a compassionate long-term solution that helps individuals improve their conditions, while reducing our overall costs.

In June, I introduced a measure that dedicates $5 million in Mental Health Services Act dollars toward creating additional housing and supportive services for the disabled homeless who suffer from mental illness.

As our community moves forward developing solutions to our growing homeless crisis, I am committed to working collaboratively with stakeholders and my colleagues on the Board of Supervisors to develop the system of care and increase the housing available to our homeless residents.

icardo’s Place, a treasured Mexican eatery in San Juan Capistrano, was born from a love of family and a love of cooking. The restaurant’s recipes come from owner Ricardo Beas’ Grandma Juana, who prepared food for her town in Jalisco, México more than 40 years ago. ondon-based filmmaker Martin McDonagh has only made three major feature films, but he already has grown a pretty big following with movie fans. His first feature, In Bruges (2008) is a cult classic set in his home continent of Europe. But his next two movies, Seven Psychopaths (2012) and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri—now in theaters—are based in the U.S. and are about American culture.

What’s even more impressive is how natural he is out of his homeland.

In Ebbing, Missouri, Mildred Haze (Frances McDormand) is divorced and a mother of a recently deceased daughter, Angela. While driving home, she spontaneously comes up with the idea to buy out three billboards on the road outside her neighborhood to guilt-trip the police department for never finding Angela’s murderer. Chief Willoughby (Woody Harrelson) claims he’s done all he can and has to focus on beating cancer, while Officer Dixon (Sam Rockwell) is more interested in harassing petty criminals and delinquents.

John Hawkes, Abbie Cornish and Lucas Hedges co-star. Like with McDonagh’s previous two films, Three Billboards has a very talented and impressive cast, with McDormand reminding us that she is one of her generation’s best. Harrelson and Rockwell do well with their characters, and Hedges is at the top of his game in young Hollywood. McDonagh’s screenplay is a breath of fresh air in our current social environment and has his trademark wit and goofy comic relief. For those looking for a grown-up movie this Thanksgiving weekend, this is it. DP

he six members of the Los Angeles-based band Ozomatli pride themselves on living up to the group’s namesake—Ozomatli, the Aztec god of dance.

With that in mind, lovers of Latin music, reggae and other world styles—or anyone who likes to dance for that matter—should be sure to catch the band’s upcoming Coach House show on Sunday, Nov. 26.

“We want people to show up and have an amazing time,” said saxophonist Ulises Bella.

Since Ozomatli’s formation in 1995, the band has become known for seamlessly blending an array of genres, from classic and modern Latin music, to urban, hiphop and rock. Bella said their upcoming San Juan show will be no different; they’ll be showcasing some of their older tunes while also playing music from their latest album, Nonstop Mexico to Jamaica, which features covers of popular Mexican songs like “La Bamba,” “Besame Mucho,” and “Como La Flor,” but with a Jamaican twist.

Unlike many of their prior albums, Nonstop Mexico to Jamaica is recorded almost entirely in Spanish. When asked if there was any political motivation behind the band’s choice to focus on their Mexican heritage, Bella said delivering a

strong political message wasn’t necessarily their focus, but added that connecting people to other cultures is important in today’s politically-divisive world.

“As time went on and we were recording it, we realized the [political] climate going on,” Bella said. “We were born here in the States, and with this album, we’re taking Mexican music and giving it a Jamaican spin. It’s a melting pot, in a way, of all of these wonderful sounds. Those kinds of connections are important versus the fear that’s been dividing people lately.”

Doors open at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 26 for the show, which begins at 7 p.m.

The 8th Annual Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel Surfing Santa Competition brings big smiles despite small surf

S

mall surf, a heavy marine layer and mostly light southerly winds did nothing to dampen holiday spirits during the 8th Annual Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel Surfing Santa Competition at Salt Creek to benefit Surfers Healing on Nov. 18 and 19.

Having expanded to two full days of competition, this year’s events included seven stand-up paddleboard (SUP) divisions in addition to three surfing divisions.

Everyone from groms to grandpas arrived at Salt Creek in their Santa outfits, elf ears and reindeer antlers; their beards and bellies seeming to have no negative impact on their surfing or SUP performance.

The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel Surfing Santa Competition benefits Surfers Healing, a surf camp founded in 1996 by Israel and Danielle Paskowitz to take kids with autism surfing. This came after an experience where their own son, Isaiah, had a healing experience after being taken surfing with his father in Hawaii.

Abraham Paskowitz, Israel’s brother, was excited to see the Ritz-Carlton Surfing Santa Competition continue to expand.

“It’s so good to see it grow, to diversify and allow more people to have fun; to enjoy each other.”

After a Long Trip, It’s Good to Be Home

O

ne of the best aspects of taking a long trip is coming home. Such is the case for my partner Greta and I. After being gone for 48 days, we are home and were quickly reminded how fortunate we are to live in South Orange County.

Although very jetlagged from crossing six time zones, being on airplanes for 15 hours and logging four hours of sleep, I stopped at the Dana Point Post Office to ship some books.

Lisa and Bill were behind the counter.

They’ve been there forever, it seems.

They’ve always been friendly and efficient.

Lisa cheerily said, “Loved your recent travel articles in the newspaper, especially the one about Glenn Miller, the penguin you saw in Chile.” I walked away thinking, wow, what nice people we have working in our community.

I also stopped at Pacific Western Bank, where I’ve banked since 1988. After entering the door from the parking lot, teller Sherie said, “Welcome back Tom, I can help you!”

Rosette, a vice president and branch manager, has assembled a great team of employees. Mimi, a former international

flight attendant, wanted an update on the Copa Airlines flights we had taken from Rio. The other tellers, Monica and Larrisa, listened intently. Denise and Fermin are always friendly. The bank visit reminded me of why it’s great to be home.

On our second day back, still “out of it” from our long trip, Greta and I walked in Dana Point Harbor. It was just before 4 p.m. when we passed Harpoon Henry’s. We’d been walking for only 15 minutes when Greta said, “That’s enough exercise for now; it’s happy-hour time at Harpoons.”

So, in we went. Speaking of a socializing place for seniors, by 4:30 p.m., the upstairs lounge is always packed with white-haired people. We enjoyed a glass of wine, some of the restaurant’s famous calamari and then headed home to sleep. After all, it was nearing midnight, Brazil time.

On the third day back, I decided to walk from our Monarch Beach home to Salt Creek Beach, as I do a few times a week. I always pass by the Monarch Beach Resort golf shop to get to the public sidewalk that takes you under PCH and to the beach.

As I approached the pro shop, I noticed a bright yellow Audi sports car parked there.

A promotional sign behind the car read, “Welcome to the Basketball Hall of Fame 2017 Golf Classic.” The sign listed several sponsors including the Los Angeles Lakers.

As I walked down the steps, I noticed several golf carts lined up at the first tee with big, tall men in them. There was a sign listing the foursomes who were playing that day: Julius Erving (Dr. J), Rick Barry, Clyde Drexler, Gary Payton, Artis Gilmore, Alex English and many other former NBA greats were listed.

I saw Jamaal Wilkes sitting in a golf cart. He was on four NBA championship

teams including the Golden State Warriors and Lakers. Without thinking, I blurted out “Silk?” That had been his nickname because he was smooth as silk when he played.

He said, “Do I know you?”

I said, “We met the night the Golden State Warriors made the NBA playoffs in 1971. After the game, you and some of your teammates came into the Victoria Station Restaurant in Oakland. I was the manager.

We all partied pretty hard that night.”

Silk said, “I remember that. By the way, Rick Barry is here.” I looked around but didn’t see Barry. He was also a great player for the Warriors, and known for his underhand style of shooting free throws.

By Tom Blake from the golf bag on his cart. Hard not to recognize Sampson, the Houston Rockets Hall of Famer, he’s 7-foot4-inches tall. Again, without thinking, I said, “Hit the ball hard Ralph!”

He looked at me with a big grin and said, “I hope I can even hit it.”

Since the golf gathering was a private event, I left and walked down the path to Salt Creek. My thoughts: Everybody living in South County is fortunate to have three incredible hotels here—the Monarch Beach Resort, the Ritz-Carlton and the Laguna Cliffs Marriott—that represent our community so impressively.

By late Saturday afternoon, Greta and I had nearly overcome our jetlag. “Let’s go to the new movie, Murder on the Orient Express,” she said.

She and I had been on the Orient Express from Venice to Paris via Prague 10 years before, and we were curious to see if the movie replicated the actual train. It did. As we left the theater, we saw Ward, a South County friend we’d known for years.

Ward said, “Saw in the paper your trip articles. Where to next?”

I said, “It’s so great to be home, we’re staying put for a while.”

On Sunday, I did stand-up paddling in the harbor with Russell Kerr, my SUP buddy, who a few years back was the board chairman of the Dana Point Chamber of Commerce. Ricky, an old-timer from San Clemente, who paddles nearly every day, said, “Hello, brother,” which he calls everybody. Fun for me to be back paddling.

At home, Greta said, “I think you need a haircut.”

“Yup, you’re right. I’m looking like a worn out, silver-haired hippie. I’ll go see Alex (the Sports Barber stylist who has been cutting my hair in Dana Point for 23 years). He’ll want to hear about our travels.”

It’s the beauty and the people here that make coming home so great.

Swift, Mackensen, Gorczyca Advance to Round of 32 in Tennis Championships Three standout Dana Hills tennis players breezed their way through the first stage of competition at the CIF-SS Girls Tennis Individual Championships in Riverside on Nov. 20.

Courtney Swift, Dana Mackensen and Emilia Gorczyca will be moving on to play in the postseason’s high-profile Round of 32 at the Whittier Narrows Tennis Center on Tuesday, Nov. 28.

Swift is competing in the singles bracket of the tournament. The standout junior swept her first-round match 6-0, 6-0 and battled through her second-round match to earn a 7-5, 6-3 win.

Mackensen and Gorczyca, playing together as a doubles team, earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory in the first round and a 6-2, 6-2 triumph in the second.

A strong group of runners packed together inside the top-20 at the CIF-SS Division 1 Cross Country Championships powered the Dana Hills boys cross country team to a third-place finish on Nov. 18.

Junior Simon Fuller was the Dolphins’ highest finisher. Fuller came in 14th overall with a time of 14:58 on the Riverside Cross Country Course.

Caleb Niednagel (19th) and Jack Landgraf (20th) finished inside the top-20 to earn valuable points for the Dolphins.

Carrick Denker placed 31st and Sagan Svoboda took 86th.

Girls Cross Country Takes Seventh at CIF-SS and Advances to State The Dana Hills girls cross country team’s seventh-place finish at the CIF-SS Division 1 Cross Country Championships on Nov. 18 ensured the Dolphins’ season would continue at the CIF State Championships this weekend.

The Dolphins made the cut on the number, as the top-7 teams in the race earned berths to Fresno on Saturday, Nov. 25.

Junior Leila Keyvan’s 39th-place finish was the highest on the team. Keyvan looped the course in Riverside in a time of 18:12. Junior Sarah Meng finished close behind in 50th position.

The Dolphins placed fifth overall at the State meet last year.

or his positive impact made in the Southern California golf community, the Southern California PGA has named Monarch Beach Golf Links’ general manager Eric Lohman its 2017 Golf Professional of the Year.

Lohman will receive the award at the annual SCPGA President’s Dinner on Sunday, Dec. 3 in Newport Beach, the organization announced in a release.

At the dinner, Lohman, a PGA member since 2000, will also be given the organization’s Bill Strausbaugh Award, recognizing his work for career development of PGA professionals.

Lohman has been a sitting member of the SCPGA Metro Chapter’s Board of Directors for several years. He’s also been a participant in multiple section committees, including serving as the chairperson of the organization’s Mentorship Committee.

Some of Lohman’s more recent accomplishments include the reintroduction of the Southern California Open, which was held at Monarch Beach for three years, the creation of the Chapter Challenge as well as the Influencer Speaker Series.

Lohman grew up in the Coachella Valley and was a standout high school golfer while attending Palm Springs High School. He played golf at the University of Houston for one year before transferring and competing for the University of California-Los Angeles an additional three years. Lohman won the 1993 Washington State Amateur. He also qualified for the PGA Professional Championship in 2014 and 2015. www.danapointtimes.com

With the big-wave winter season at hand, will we see history be made this winter 100 miles offshore?

I

n the early 1990s, Surfline founder Sean Collins, Surfing magazine photo editor Larry “Flame” Moore and pilot Mike Castillo made a discovery off the Southern California coast: the Cortes Bank.

Cortes was actually fairly well known at the time. Popular with fishermen and divers, it gained some notoriety on Nov. 2, 1985, when the nuclear-powered carrier USS Enterprise ran aground on the reef, tearing a large hole in the ship’s hull. It was a navigational nightmare. But by the mid ’90s, after scouring log books and making numerous reconnaissance flights, the big-wave potential of Cortes Bank, located 100 miles off the coast from Dana Point, revealed itself. An undersea mount that rises more than one thousand fathoms (over a mile) from the sea floor, Bishop Rock, the shallowest part of the bank, is a mere three to six feet below the surface— in other words, the perfect big-wave set-up.

“It opened up a whole new realm,” said Collins in 2007 (he passed away in 2011).

“Getting it good was never going to be easy.

There are so many variables that far out to sea, but we saw it as the place where a 100foot wave could potentially be ridden.”

In 1995, Sharp brought a small exploratory team out to Cortes, including Surfing magazine editor Sam George and surfer George Hulse (now a pastor at Shoreline Church in San Clemente). The conditions were clean and glassy and the surf was about 15 feet—tame by big-wave surfing standards. The initial mission was deemed a success.

Armed with the knowledge that the wave could actually be ridden successfully, Collins watched the weather while Sharp and company waited. Then, during the winter of 2001, “Storm 15” formed in the Gulf of Alaska.

arrived at Cortes Bank and were greeted by oil-glass conditions and enormous, halfmile long waves breaking across the reef.

Collins, Mel and Gerlach all rode waves measuring in the neighborhood of 50 feet.

But it was Parsons that stole the show on his very first ride. Estimated at 66 feet on the face, it won him the first of two Guinness World Records and the Swell XXL Biggest Wave Award prize of $66,000 for the biggest wave surfed in 2000/2001.

Meanwhile, Walla and Slater tried to paddle for a wave and nearly drowned. Moore photographed from a circling plane, while filmmaker Dana Brown shot from a boat for his surf film Step Into Liquid.

“We had no business being in the water on that day,” says Slater. “It was big, but not as big as it could get. It demonstrated to all of us that the place was capable of a lot more.”

On Jan. 5, 2008, Parsons and Gerlach returned, this time with big-wave understudies Grant “Twiggy” Baker and San Clemente upstart Greg Long. In one of the worst storms ever recorded off the coast of California, Parsons was photographed on a wave bigger than his award-winning ride of 2001, initially estimated to be over 70 feet on the face, it was later determined to be at least 77 feet, which gave Parsons a second Guinness World Record.

“I was sure we were going to die on that trip,” says local filmmaker Matt Wybenga, who filmed the session. “My footage was useless; the seas were way too big. It was complete chaos. I’m really surprised nobody died out there. There’s nothing around for 100 miles, you’re completely

alone out there, and the waves are bigger than anywhere in the world. It was madness.”

On Dec. 21, 2012, Long nearly lost his life surfing Cortes. After sustaining a wipeout on a 20-footer, a wave ridden alongside McNamara, Long failed to surface. After being hit by a series of four more waves, his body was found by three lifeguards on rescue jet skis.

“I began regaining consciousness during the ride back to the support boat we were operating from,” told Long in a press statement after the accident. “I was stabilized onboard the boat by the lifeguards and paramedics who were part of our safety team, and a Coast Guard helicopter was summoned to transport me back to San Diego.”

These pioneering sessions, that have sometimes nearly ended in tragedy, have led to a slew of innovations and advancements in big-wave safety in recent years.

Surfers are better trained as lifeguards.

They develop rescue teams and contingency plans. Safety equipment such as inflatable flotation vests have become standard issue equipment. The risks are greater than they’ve ever been, but so are the precautions being taken.

There aren’t huge expectations going into the 2017/201818 big-wave winter season, but that doesn’t mean Long, Parsons and their crew of hellmen aren’t going to be keeping a close eye on things. You never know what the Pacific’s going to throw at you, and when you’re 100 miles from shore, anything can happen. DP

an Clemente’s Hayden Rodgers continues to blitz through the NSSA season.

With playful, knee- to waist-high surf offered this weekend at the Newport Open, the 11-year-old phenom bagged his second win of the season in the Open Boys division and now sits at the top of the ratings.

Coming up in a surf-stoked family, Hayden’s old man, Jerry, first pushed him into a wave when he was seven years old and he hasn’t looked back since. These days, you may find him and his brother, Nolan, down at Lowers if they can convince their mom to drop them off. Otherwise, you can find them around T-Street, ripping with all of the other groms. Last summer, Hayden had the opportunity to go on a team surf trip to Bali with his sponsor Volcom.

All told, it was a good weekend for San Clemente surfers. Coming off her first pro junior win, Kirra Pinkerton kept the momentum going and took out the Open Women’s division. Nico Coli lorded over the Open Juniors and finished third in the Open Men’s. DP
