Five things Dana Point should know this week School District, Teachers Union Reach Tentative Contract Agreement THE LATEST: After more than a year of negotiations, the Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD) announced on Jan. 12 that officials had reached a tentative contract agreement with members of the Capistrano Unified Education Association (CUEA).

CUSD’s chief communications officer Ryan Burris said in a press release that the agreement “will provide the stability of a three-year contract” and allow the “district to continue to operate efficiently while remaining focused on the education of young people.”

Negotiations between CUSD and CUEA had been taking place in closed session since Oct. 13, 2017, and officially stalled back in June.

WHAT’S NEXT: CUSD officials released details of the three-year tentative agreement on Jan. 17, including information on salary and benefit increases, an early retirement incentive and extended day kindergarten.

CUEA officials announced the accord on their website as well, stating that specific details of the agreement are available only through CUEA representatives of each school site. CUEA wrote that “voting should take place sometime within the Dana Point Times January 19-25, 2018

Dana Point Becomes Second City in Orange County to Ban Smoking WHAT’S NEXT: In their meeting on Jan. 16, City Council passed a no smoking in public places ordinance, making Dana Point the second city in Orange County to ban smoking.

The ban narrowly passed, with Mayor Rick Viczorek and Mayor Pro Tem Joseph Muller opposing the ban.

Originally presenting the ban in May of 2017, Council member Debra Lewis was pleased to see the ban pass.

“We can all breathe a little easier now.

Dana Point residents care about clean beaches, clean water and now, clean air.

We were among the first cities to ban plastic bag and styrofoam usage. Now, we lead the way in clean air,” Lewis said.

Mayor Pro Tem Muller voiced concerns over the impact to Dana Point’s major resorts, stating emphatically that he was “shocked” that the Dana Point Chamber of Commerce had not participated more in researching this ban which could have potential impacts to Dana Point’s largest businesses and revenue sources.

Surfrider Foundation South Orange County Chairman Rick Erkeneff brought a large water bottle filled with more than 800 cigarette butts he found during part of a Surfrider Foundation Urban CleanUp event on Jan. 13. During which they collected more than 3,000 cigarette butts from the Lantern District.

“When you don’t have a clean environment, you’ll see the tourism dollars stop,” Erkeneff said.

THE LATEST: The smoking ban is stated

THE LATEST: At the Jan. 16 Dana Point City Council meeting, Dana Point Director of Public Works/City Engineer Matt Sinacori presented two possible routes for the 2018 city of Dana Point trolley program. The trolley concluded the 2017 season with its highest passenger ridership count to date.

Both routes expand the existing service route to include additional locations inland such as Dana Hills High School, Pines Park and a proposed stop on Camino De Estrella connecting the Dana Point Trolley Program with the City of San Clemente’s trolley.

“We’ve extended further south, and we are hoping that San Clemente is able to meet us halfway,” Sinacori said during his City Council presentation.

Other key changes are stops inside Doheny State Beach being moved to allow for a more regional stop on Pacific Coast Highway at the Dana Point pedestrian bridge to avoid substantial potential delays in entering/exiting Doheny State Beach.

WHAT’S NEXT: Mayor Pro Tem Muller voiced concern with the potential for northbound traffic on Interstate 5 between Camino De Estrella and Beach Cities exits. Mayor Viczorek voiced similar concerns.

User Fee Subsidy Policy Adopted THE LATEST: On Jan. 16, Dana Point City Council voted 3-2 to adopt a new user fee subsidy policy that was originally presented and discussed in October 2017.

A study by Wohlford Consulting was the first since Dana Point’s last fee survey in 2005. It revealed significant differentials in user fees and service costs to the city.

Based on three fee areas – including planning, building and engineering—Wohlford’s study revealed a current overall annual subsidy of $2,253,000 from the general fund, with an overall cost recovery rate for fee services of 36 percent.

Council members Tomlinson, Lewis and Wyatt voted in favor of the user fee subsidy policy presented by Assistant City Manager Mike Killebrew.

The policy states that fees will be set at

full cost recovery unless it is determined that there must be a subsidy. The policy continues, explaining that, “user fees are appropriate where an individual member of the public is the sole or primary beneficiary of a service.”

Mayor Viczorek and Mayor Pro Tem Muller, who voted against the subsidy policy update, both voiced concern over double-taxation.

“These aren’t user fees,” said Mayor Pro Tem Muller. “They are regulatory fees.”

Council member Lewis countered Viczorek and Muller by voicing concern that “tax-payers should not be paying for developers.”

WHAT’S NEXT: Killebrew explained adoption of this user fee subsidy policy did not indicate immediate application. The adoption of this policy becomes a part of an ongoing direction to create a long-term financial plan (LFTP) to address a projected budget deficit in 2020. Host Compliance ShortTerm Rental Agreement Management Presentation THE LATEST: During the Jan. 16 Dana Point City Council meeting, Dana Point Director of Community Development Ursula LunaReynosa made a presentation on short-term rental (STR) management applications by third-party company called Host Compliance.

Host Compliance is enlisted by the city of Dana Point like other municipalities when they need help researching, drafting, implementing and enforcing short-term rental regulations.

From Jan. 1 2014 to Nov. 2016, Dana Point issued 185 STR permits. In Nov. 2016, Dana Point enacted a moratorium on new STR permits. No new permits have been issued.

Luna-Reynosa presented that Host Compliance identified 307 STR properties in/ near Dana Point jurisdiction. Forty-seven percent of these listings were single family STR listings and 53 percent were multi-family or unkown listings. One hundred and eighteen of these 307 listings were rated as compliant to city of Dana Point STR land use compliance and 169 listings were found to be outside of the land use compliance.

Currently, an STR is recorded as a residential rental listing for less than 30 days.

Cetacean Creation Dana Hills students set sail in search of inspiration amongst the waves

A

nxious energy rippled through the air as 58 Dana Hills High School (DHHS) students prepared to board Dana Wharf Sportfishing and Whale Watching’s boat the Dana Pride. With a winter westerly swell having arrived overnight causing high-surf advisories across California coastlines, students were preparing to embark on a field trip deeply rooted in the core elements of adventure and inspiration.

Each year, students from DHHS fine art classes—including A.P. studio art, video production and drawing and painting classes—set sail out of the Dana Point Harbor in order to gain inspiration for creative projects to be displayed and sold during the annual Festival of Whales celebration.

DHHS fine art teachers Krista Rodriguez and Chau Tran, whose classes were attending this year’s Festival of Whales inspiration trip, voiced that this whale watching experience has more to offer their students through the challenges it presents, than its leisure.

“Being out on the ocean, being a part of the elements, it certainly has its challenges for artists,” Rodriguez said. Tran seconded this, saying that his students’ work was significantly enhanced after experiencing the realities of life on the water.

“The tones of the water, the texture of the skin of the animals, it all becomes so much more real. You can emulate as many things as you want, but there is nothing like the real thing,” Tran said.

For some students, the Festival of Whales inspiration trip is a routine day on the water, for others, never before explored territory, but for all aboard the Dana Pride earlier this week, growth is formed from stepping outside of the stable platform of the classroom, and stepping foot into the wind and the waves.

Growing Pains Sky Hernandez, a junior at DHHS, had never been on a boat before this trip. When asked how that could be, she responded simply, saying that she was afraid of the ocean.

“I’ll go to the beach sometimes, but I have never been on a boat. To be honest, I’m afraid of the ocean,” Hernandez said, mentioning that her older sister inspired her to attend.

Rodriguez voiced that this is not an uncommon experience for students in her DHHS classes.

“For a lot of us, the ocean and things like boats are second nature,” Rodriguez said. “But we have to remember that for some, just because it is close doesn’t mean it’s their reality. Boats are expensive and time consuming; it’s amazing to be able to bring these kids into a new world right in their own backyard.”

For some DHHS Students, in retrospect, the most inspiring moments may have been what they have learned about themselves as much as any natural elements.

“It’s beautiful, I had no idea. I’m a little shaky, but I like it,” Hernandez said calmly, sitting on the back deck of the Dana Pride. Succumbing to sea-sickness earlier in the trip, she now sat firmly planted on the deck of Dana Pride, eyes peeled for her prized gem—a grey whale.

Learning by Teaching On the opposite end of the spectrum, Melanie Shams, a senior at DHHS, combs the deck of the Dana Pride like a sailor who has earned her sea legs.

That’s because she has.

The 17-year-old video production

student is attending the trip to work on her video editing and interviewing skills.

Shams, who aspires to be a lawyer, seems to float along the boat as others wearily cling to the rails for support.

An enthusiastic and regular fisherman, favoring pelagic fish, Shams said that she will always have a passion for fishing but that she wants to keep it on the side.

Her comfort is evident; managing her movement on the Dana Pride as opposed to surviving the rise and fall of each step, Shams is taking advantage of the opportunity to intertwine her passion and her education.

Identifying students for interviews, Shams angles for proper lighting and manages her co-part operating the camera in order for better sound quality.

Occasionally cracking a smile, Shams maintains an obvious sense of control amongst her classmates, keeping her own personal progression to herself.

Like Shams, Aaron Munger, a junior, has experience on boats. In fact, he was a deck hand aboard the Dana Pride.

“It’s nostalgic. I’ve spent a lot of early mornings on this boat,” Munger said.

He expressed that it’s inspiring to him to work with his classmates in order Page 4

to positively shape their experience through his knowledge.

“In a way, teaching is natural out here.

I love being on the ocean and I do a lot of other things now, but it’s cool to be able to pass along everything that I’ve learned.”

With decades of teaching experiences between them, Rodriguez and Tran agreed that the open-air classroom encourages their students to grow in ways that the classroom cannot provide.

Mia Jessen, a senior in the art studio class seconded this, saying that she was, “the type to indulge in life experiences instead of sitting and being talked to.”

Once the Dana Pride returned to the Harbor, the students seemed to have settled in. Quietly and contently taking in their surroundings, a majority appear more contemplative; sitting along the railings with their feet hanging over the passing waves below.

“It’s astonishing,” Rodriguez said.

“What you learn when you aren’t in complete control of all of the elements.”

The 47th annual Dana Point Festival of Whales will take place in the Dana Point Harbor on March 3,4,10 and 11.

Sandstone Bluff on Harbor Drive Gives Way on Jan. 13, Damages Bathroom Below At approximately 3:30 p.m. on Jan. 13, part of a sandstone bluff along Harbor Drive gave way, falling more than 100 feet and severely damaging an OC Parks restroom below. No injuries were reported.

Marisa O’Neil, public information officer for OC Parks, said OC Parks recommended the closure of Cove Road as a precaution. She also said that OC Parks is not aware of any other areas of concern, but their engineering contractor will be conducting further assessments of the bluff in the area of the fall to determine next steps.

Glenn Brumage Named Executive Director of Surfing Heritage and Culture Center The nonprofit organization Surfing Heritage and Culture Center (SHACC) has appointed Glenn Brumage as its new executive director, the board of directors announced earlier this week. “As SHACC has matured, improved its programming and community engagement, the board of directors recognized the need for new leadership that will facilitate the necessary evolution and elevation of the organization,” said Denny Michael, president of SHACC. “Glenn has stepped up to prove himself a driven and competent leader, especially over the last year. We couldn’t have asked for a better trial period than his three-year tenure on the board of directors and his leadership as president,” reported founder Dick Metz. Brumage stepped down from his position as board chair in order to accept the position of executive director. His professional career has spanned 40 years in executive management of board-sports companies.

For 10 years, he has been driving the development of surfing in China and runs the annual “Silver Dragon” professional surf contest in Hangzhou. Most recently, he has been consulting for businesses and mentoring young entrepreneurs. He also serves on the board of the International Association of Skateboard Companies.

“Surfing is my passion,” said Brumage. “While I come from a business background, I’ve served on two nonprofit boards of directors, and as president of SHACC’s board. I understand the differences as well as similarities between commercial and non-profit management.

Local Burglary Interrupted

by Homeowners; 1 Burglar Remains At Large A call came in to Orange County Sheriff’s Department Dana Point Police Services on Jan. 12 at approximately 3 p.m. reporting a burglary in process on the 33000 block of Astoria St. Sgt. Richard Himmel of Dana Point Police Services confirmed that upon interruption, suspects fled the scene. One suspect, a local homeless parolee, was taken into custody near the Albertsons on Del Obispo St. A second male, which Himmel described as a white male in his twenties, fled the scene on foot and currently remains at large. Sgt. Himmel explained that a helicopter as well as two patrol canines were used during the search. At Dana Point’s City Council meeting on Jan. 16, Chief of Police Services Russ Chilton stated the case was still being investigated.

Recall Petitions for Three Council Members Receive Approval for Circulation Proponents trying to recall three City Council members have been cleared to begin collecting signatures.

Petitions to recall Council members Kerry Ferguson and Derek Reeve received approval from the City Clerk on Dec. 21, and the petitioners attempting to recall Pam Patterson received approval on Dec. 22.

The notices of intent to recall Ferguson and Reeve were initially submitted to the City Clerk’s office on Nov. 21, and the petition for Patterson was submitted on Nov. 27. All three Council members have filed responses.

Now that the City Clerk’s office has verified that the proposed recall petitions meet all the requirements of the California Elections Code, the proponents have 120 days to collect the signatures of 20 percent of the city’s 19,273 registered voters—3,854 residents—for each petition.

This means that proponents looking to recall Reeve and Ferguson have until April 20 to submit their signatures, and the proponents seeking to recall Patterson have until April 23 (since the 120 days falls on

Saturday, April 21).

If the recall petitioners succeed in collecting enough signatures, the City Clerk’s office has reported that the cost for an at-large special election would range from $95,000 to $106,000.

Local Student Partners with JUST Water for Sustainable School Program Team Zissou, an environmental club at San Clemente High School, has secured a partnership in its efforts of promoting sustainable products with JUST water, a company that produces recyclable water containers.

A pilot program introducing the containers will take place at San Clemente High School as well as Capistrano Unified

School District (CUSD) schools Tesoro High School, Ladera Ranch Middle School and Shorecliffs Middle School.

Jackson Hinkle, the president of Team Zissou, said as the club’s plastic-free campaign, #PlasticFreeCUSD, caught the attention of JUST water, ideas began flowing from there.

The bottles are made from paper and the caps are made from sugarcane.

“JUST water and Team Zissou came from an organic relationship stemmed by Team Zissou President Jackson Hinkle and JUST water co-founder Jaden Smith,” said JUST CEO Ira Laufer. “…Team Zissou started working closer on their mission to reduce single-use plastic in their school with the JUST water team.

Coincidentally, Kristin Hilleman, director of Food and Nutrition within (CUSD) also had her eyes on JUST water as another way to bring sustainability into her program.”

Students will be given JUST water at the cafeteria lines, but they can opt for the plastic bottle option, Hinkle said.

If the program is successful, there could be opportunities to make the containers a permanent feature in all of the schools within CUSD. The program will run Jan. 22-26.

A

s Dana Point Harbor prepares to undergo major renovations and we enter the most transformative period in our harbor’s history since its creation, I have found myself asking two questions more and more frequently and with increasing degrees of unease. How much of our harbor’s legacy is infused in the walls of the buildings we are about to tear down? How do we identify, and capture, the charm and character that defines our beloved harbor and safeguard them for the future?

It’s real this time. After more than 20 years of planning, promises and false starts, the County of Orange and its development partner are about to embark on a $300 million revitalization that will involve razing the shops and restaurants and hotel, ripping out our marinas, and rebuilding them. Our elected leaders, the County staff managing the project and the developer all promise to protect our harbor’s character through this enormous project. But what is that character exactly?

How do we define it? How do we preserve it?

I have a powerful kinship with this harbor. This harbor and I grew up together— we’re the same age—I’ve spent my whole life here. The ocean, boating, this harbor, define who I am. But now, we’re about to redefine our harbor. It invigorates me and also scares me. I know this kinship with our harbor is not mine alone; I share it with thousands of others who make Dana

During the last four years that I have volunteered to serve on the San Onofre Community Engagement Panel (CEP), I have learned that most people in the surrounding communities agree on the importance of moving the used nuclear fuel offsite.

U.S. nuclear power plants have been safely storing used nuclear fuel for more than three decades. This excellent safety record includes the San Onofre nuclear plant, which stores its used nuclear fuel using robust, proven technologies.

Point Harbor central to their lives. And this fusion of harbor and community makes the revitalization project a profound undertaking, and places enormous pressure on the County and developer to get it right.

I despise waiting in lines, yet, there is one place in this world that I am delighted to find a line out the door—Coffee Importers. There is camaraderie in that line.

By James Lenthall Often, there are friends in that line. And it’s so pleasing to see our little independent coffee shop thrive in a world of Starbucks.

That’s the character of Dana Point Harbor.

As is Harpoon Henry’s lounge when Phil Shane plays. As are the fish and chips on the Jon’s Fish Market patio after a day on the water. As is a summer sunset dinghy cruise, stopping to visit fellow boaters to offer cheers and discuss nothing of consequence. So, how much of this charm and character rely on the physical attributes of our harbor, and how much are carried in the culture of the people—the community of our harbor? It’s touching and comforting to believe that the character of our harbor resides in its people, regardless of what we may do to the hardware.

As a young kid, before embarking on the Sum Fun or the Fury for a day of fishing, we’d often grab a sunrise breakfast at Proud Mary’s. Back then, it had the aura of a locals-only breakfast joint. Order at the counter, maybe choose a donut from behind the glass, and wait for your number to be called. Then in 2007 a fire took down Proud Mary’s and it was rebuilt with a new vision. It was more elegant, more refined, a fancier menu, longer hours, table service

These important facts were missing from the San Clemente Times coverage of the Dec. 30 protest in San Clemente of used nuclear fuel storage at San Onofre.

I recognize the factual errors by critics at the protest because I have heard them time and again during my service on the CEP. The panel’s diverse group of serious-minded leaders has devoted the large majority of time to one topic—advocating for constructive, feasible solutions to get the fuel off site at the earliest opportunity.

San Onofre will store all of its fuel in licensed, stainless steel canisters encased in concrete, a process known as dry-cask storage that has been repeated hundreds of times in the U.S. Not only is this a proven technology, we know that placement canisters facilitate transfer to off-site storage because the fuel must be in a canister to be accepted by a storage facility.

and a new vibe. I still enjoy it and often recommend it to out-of-towners, but the rebuild unarguably altered the character of what it was before. Then there was the evolution of The Jolly Roger to Waterman’s Harbor, which resulted in a similar shift in the culture of a physical space.

Both serve as examples that renovation can indeed alter the character of a place.

There’s little doubt that renovation is needed. The buildings are decaying and the docks are literally crumbling into the water. Renovation can bring about exciting new ideas, a better use of space, enhancements as to how we experience our harbor, but what is the best balance between a refresh and a rebirth? Which characteristics of our existing harbor do we protect and carry forward, and which might be better retired to fond memories and nostalgia? These are questions that will challenge the County, their developer, and all of us over the next few years.

I have been privileged and rewarded, and often frustrated, to play a part in planning our harbor’s revitalization. I am motivated by a sense of duty to help shepherd our beloved harbor into the future and pass along to my kids a harbor they can be proud of, and where they can raise their kids with a love of the ocean and pride in their home port. This is a duty shared among so many of us with a kinship to Dana Point Harbor.

At the Movies: ‘Phantom Thread’ is Designed with Elegance

P

aul Thomas Anderson is arguably the most acclaimed and well-known auteur in modern American cinema, and his new film, Phantom Thread, is finally expanding after three anxious weeks in just LA and NYC. Anderson has had his share of variety on his resume, from the adult-industry-themed period piece Boogie Nights (1997) to the epic ensemble drama Magnolia (1999) to the intense character study of There Will be Blood (2007) to the quirky crime feature Inherent Vice (2014).

Now, he branches out to his most extreme piece to date: a British period film on the fashion industry.

In 1950s England, a high-class, respected fashion designer named Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis) specializes in creating gowns and dresses. He lives as a bachelor with his sister Cyril (Lesley Manville), who also works as his assistant.

That all takes a turn when he becomes

instantly taken with waitress Alma (Vicky Krieps), who he quickly recruits to be his dress model for inspiration, as well as his lover.

Phantom Thread is about as far away from Anderson’s roots as he can get.

Beginning his career with movies about West Coast culture, he now impressively conveys the U.K. as a native Californian.

The best word to describe the film would be “elegant.” From all of the lush costumes, to the sweeping music score by Jonny Greenwood, to the cinematography, the film is visually stunning. But it all comes together with Anderson’s recognizable quirks and techniques. Day-Lewis and Krieps are a perfect match in acting, and Thread is perfect for a rather fancy movie night. DP

‘Violated’ and ‘Champions Way’ Look at the Darker Side of College Football

W

ith the college football season concluding, what better time to review two new books about the sport: “Violated: Exposing Rape at Baylor University amid College Football’s Sexual Assault Crisis” by Paula Lavigne and Mark Schlabach and “Champions Way: Football, Florida, and the Lost Soul of College Sports” by Mike McIntire.

Although college football enjoys immense popularity, these two books look at the darker, criminal side of the sport.

Lavigne and Schlabach tackle the rape/ sexual assault culture of Baylor University while McIntire exposes Florida State’s way of doing football. While not much new has been unearthed in either book, the staggering amount of troubling issues is cause for concern. Additionally, these problems need to remain in the spotlight because schools all over the country are dealing with these issues. In Baylor’s case, it is even more saddening knowing it is a Christian university and the longest continuously operating college in Texas. However, as the authors point out, the leadership at that campus was more worried about underage drinking and dancing.

On the positive side, despite the nearmythic religious status football takes in Texas, it seems that the majority of people in high places realized there needed to be a change in the attitude of rape or assault victims. While that change may be slow, it does appear to be moving forward.

Felony theft, attempted murder and academic fraud are also part of the list. Some will say these problems are at all schools, especially the big football/basketball schools. However, attempted murder and rape are felonies no BOOK TALK matter where they

By Dan DeNeve occur. Academic fraud at a university, while sad, is ironic, since the whole premise of a school is based on academics. Unfortunately academic fraud is not isolated to Florida State. The University of North Carolina was found to have a long history of such blatant hypocrisy. Unlike Baylor though, there was no bright future at the end of the story. The author offers some solutions to the larger problem of college athletics, but we are left with nothing of the sort with Florida State, which is disheartening.

While studies have shown that rape goes on at many campuses, including elite schools, it is disturbing when it seems that nothing changes. I realize fans can be myopic about their alma mater or favorite school, so they turn a blind eye. Furthermore, I am not naïve to the fact that leadership at these schools has a brand to protect, but what was frustrating is that all this went on in light of the Penn State scandal. It appears that sports, especially football, and to a lesser degree,

Maybe, as McIntire points out, the real solution includes creating real minor leagues for these two sports. McIntire concludes that the change will probably come slowly through the judicial system as it hacks away at long held beliefs and traditions. The library has a copy of both titles.

Renowned surf, travel photographer collaborates with Album Surf for unique art

he Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel is hosting an exhibition of photographs and surfboards titled “Winter Waters” by renowned surf and travel photographer Chris Burkard. The exhibit, now on display in the resort’s Art Exhibit Space through April, captures the colorful waters of California and Iceland on San Clemente’s Album Surf surfboards.

Traveling throughout the year to pursue the farthest expanses of Earth, Burkard— also a creative director, public speaker and author— works to capture stories that inspire humans to consider their relationship with nature. Layered with outdoor travel, adventure, surf and lifestyle subjects, Burkard is known for images that are punctuated by untamed, powerful

landscapes.

“I’ve lived in California my entire life, but I consider Iceland a second home,” Burkard said in a press release announcing the gallery. “Even after countless trips, Iceland always makes me appreciate California and the unique differences between both landscapes.”

Album Surf has been shaping one-ofa-kind, innovative surfboards, handmade

by South County surfers in the United States, since 2001. An authentic grassroots approach by the company has led to a growing customer base from around the world.

Dana Hills (10-8, 2-0) got another huge effort from junior Maya McArthur with team highs of 16 points and 18 rebounds.

She also had four assists and a steal.

Dana Hills earned a tight win at Mission Viejo, 4-3, on Jan. 11 and followed up with a huge burst at Trabuco Hills, 16-3, on Jan. 16.

San Clemente is 3-0 in league, but Dana Hills holds down second place at 2-1 ahead of Mission Viejo at 1-1.

Dana Wharf Having Best-Ever Halibut Derby

n his weekly report, Dana Wharf Captain Brian Woolley said large schools of mackerel and sardine have layered the halibut underneath with good fishing anywhere from Laguna Beach to San Mateo Point.

The Clemente pulled in a staggering 17 legal halibut on Jan. 14 as part of this incredible run.

“Best local halibut fishing for our derby time frame ever, hands down,” Woolley said in the report. “Not the best we’ve seen locally, but for sure the best we’ve seen in a very long time.”

On that Clemente trip, Cher Owens pulled in a 32-pound halibut to slide into the No. 2 spot on the derby leaderboard.

Woolley hopes to have a 10- to 12-pound fish as the bottom at No. 25 and fill the board with larger ones from there. A 36-pounder holds the top spot.

The Session That Changed Everything How a chance encounter at T-Street between Shane Beschen, Martin Potter altered the course of surfing in local waters

O

range County’s southern flank is a haven for some of the world’s most talented surfers. From worldbeating residents such as Kolohe Andino and Griffin Colapinto to international WSL pros like Jordy Smith and Filipe Toledo, the performance level in the water these days has never been higher.

Salt Creek and Trestles have always been fertile spawning ground for surf talent.

Chris Ward and the Lost crew flew the flag around the turn of the century. Before that it was Kolohe’s dad, Dino, and cohorts like Christian Fletcher, Matt Archbold and Shane Beschen that rattled the wave-riding establishment. But when it comes to defining the modern, progressive era of surfing, perhaps the “aha” moment came on a small, playful day at T-Street in the early 1980s.

“It was during the summer, either 1982 or ’83, I must have been about 10 or 11 years old, I was surfing T-Street with my good friend Dan Kennedy,” Beschen said.

“The waves were fun, the sun was out and I was totally oblivious to the fact that my perception of surfing was about to change forever. I was paddling back out after catching a wave and this guy on a fluores-

cent green and yellow board was absolutely flying right at me. I started paddling faster to get out of his way, but he was moving at a speed I’d never seen. He then whipped the most radical backside 360 right in my face. Spray flew everywhere, I was momentarily blinded, left wondering if he had fallen. When I turned my head to see the outcome he was already down the line and into his next move.”

Mind blown, Beschen bolted to his friend Dan. “Did you f---ing see that?!” yelled Beschen.

Baffled, the two groms stammered for an explanation.

“Out back, we started to discuss the possibilities of who the hell that guy was.

Jim Hogan was also out so we asked him if he knew who it was,” continued Beschen.

“He laughed and said, ‘That’s Martin Potter. He’s from South Africa and he’s staying with me for a while.’”

As Beschen recalls, “That moment changed the course of San Clemente’s surfing history forever.”

hen asked what’s the best thing about surfing, Carolyn Sachse knows what’s up.

“It can turn a bad day good,” she says without hesitation.

An eighth-grader at Shorecliffs Middle School, Sachse is wise beyond her years.

Barreling into her third year on the surf team, she’s been surfing since the ripe old age of 4 and is as comfortable ripping a shortboard as she is gliding on a longboard. Lately, she’s decided to focus her Dana Point Times January 19-25, 2018

competitive energy on the longboard, and it’s paying off big time.

Sachse is leading the pack of Orange County’s middle school longboard girls on the Scholastic Surf Series rankings

“Pottz” was 16 he was already getting paid to travel the globe and compete on the world tour. This was during the time of Apartheid in South Africa and he wanted no part of it.

Pottz officially changed his nationality to the U.K. to avoid international sanctions, and despite the odds, his radical, no-holds-barred approach revolutionized the sport, and by 1989 he’d won the world title.

“As far as I’m concerned, Potter is the godfather of progressive surfing and he can basically take credit for all of the surfing success that has come from San Clemente,” Beschen said. “When he first started coming to our town he ignited a revolution like never before. A new standard of performance was laid out before us in real life, it was a tangible skill that we studied and used as our guideline for what surfing is all about. The speed and radicalness of his approach inspired us all.

“For myself, those days of Potter ripping San Clemente molded my perception of what good surfing is and how I would approach my technique and career,” Beschen continued, who would grow up to

after winning the first two contests of the year. And in the Western Surf Association contests, she’s been surfing up a division, competing in the 17 and Under group.

Keeping the vibe alive, she came away from last weekend’s contest at the Oceanside Harbor with a big win in her division.

Not just a success in surf, Sachse is also getting the job done in the classroom, which is sure to set her up for success with whatever the future may hold. Last summer she was one of only a handful of girls in South Orange County to receive a scholarship to attend a week-long science camp at the University of California-Irvine.

When Sachse grows up, her goal is to become a marine biologist, which sure as heck isn’t a bad job for somebody that loves surfing as much as she does. DP

contend for world titles and become Kelly Slater’s arch nemesis during the second half of the ’90s. “I remember times when I was at the school lunch tables and kids would be talking about Potter surfing T-Street, and I would run down there right after school, hoping to see that green and yellow board flying through my local beach break.”

Ten years after their fateful first encounter, Beschen found himself surfing an expression session at a contest in France— facing none other than his childhood hero.

“I took off on a wave and launched a frontside air 360,” Beschen said. “It was still back in the beginning stages of progressive surfing in competition and the commentators were going crazy in French. I paddled back out and Potter turned toward me and said, ‘Hey, go easy on me grom.’”

“I looked at him apologetically and felt kind of embarrassed. All I could say was, ‘Sorry, but it’s kind of your fault, you’re the guy who started this whole thing,’” laughs Beschen. DP
