Shark Research Committee Releases 2017 Pacific Coast Shark Attack Report THE LATEST: On Jan. 24, the Shark Research Committee released its 2017 Pacific Coast Shark attack report. There Dana Point Times January 26-February 1, 2018

were nine authenticated unprovoked shark attacks reported from the Pacific Coast of North America during 2017, of which none were fatal. There were eight attacks recorded from California and one in Washington. One attack occurred in March, one in April, four in July, one in August, one in November and one in December.

Only one shark attack was reported south of the Santa Barbara County line, with the remaining eight attacks from Santa Barbara County and north. The single Washington shark attack occurred at the Grays Harbor jetty, in Westport. Four of the attacks occurred to people kayaking, two surfing, one paddleboarding, one freediving and one swimming. The great white shark, Carcharodon carcharias, was identified or highly suspected in all nine of the attacks.

The publication Shark Attacks of the Twentieth Century authenticated 108 unprovoked shark attacks from the Pacific Coast between 1900 and 1999. The great white shark was implicated in 87 percent of the 108 confirmed attacks with an annual average of slightly more than one shark attack per year. The nine cases reported for 2017 brings the total number of unprovoked shark attacks occurring along the Pacific Coast during the 21st century to 103. This is six times the 20th century annual average of slightly more than one shark attack per year. The great white shark was positively identified or highly suspect in 92 of the 103 attacks recorded during the 21st century. From 2000 to the present, 51 of the 103 confirmed shark attacks occurred during the three-month period of August, September and October. There were eight fatal shark attacks confirmed from 1900 to 1999 and five fatal attacks reported from 2000 to 2017. The 13 fatal attacks represent six percent of the 211 total cases.

There was an overall increase in the number of great white shark observations, encounters and interactions with pinnipeds, reported in 2017.

Man Arrested After Stabbing at Sober Living Home on Jan. 24 THE LATEST: Deputies responded to a call regarding a violent altercation between two male residents of a sober living home in the 32000 block of Buccaneer st. at 7:25 a.m. on Jan. 24.

Layfloris Debramaletta, 50, of Colorado, reportedly became enraged because the victim, an 18-year-old male from Tennessee, was taking too long in the shower.

Debramaletta entered the bathroom and punched the younger man while he was in the shower. When the younger male finished his shower, he located the suspect and punched him. According to witnesses, Debramaletta then produced a seven-inch steak knife and stabbed the victim in the right shoulder. Debramaletta was arrested for felony assault with a deadly weapon and was booked into the Orange County Jail. The victim was treated at the scene by paramedics and was transported to the hospital with a non-life-threatening stab wound.

No Smoking in Public Places Ordinance to Take Effect on Feb. 15 WHAT’S NEXT: On Jan. 16, the Dana Point City Council hosted a second reading of a new No Smoking in Public Places Ordinance. With the passage of the ordinance, Dana Point Public Works department recommended a similar approach to Laguna Beach to notify the public of the new ban.

There is no cost incurred to the city as Dana Point owns two of these signs.

The ordinance, which in its purpose names smoking a “public nuisance,” recognizes the right of the residents of the city to be free from unwelcome secondhand smoke.

The ordinance defines a “public place” as any indoor or outdoor public space publicly or privately owned, including but not limited to any public buildings, alleys, sidewalks bus shelters and more.

In addition to all places where smoking is prohibited under state and federal law, in which case those laws apply, no person shall smoke in, and smoking areas shall not be established or designated in places of employment and public places. Smoking is permitted in private residential properties, other than those used as a child-care or health care facility subject to state licensing requirements or in a moving or stationary vehicle including vehicles on a public street

or right-of-way or parked in a public place.

The provisions of this ordinance may be enforced by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, any peace officer or fire code enforcement officer, or other employees designated by the City Manager.

“There will be a period of education on this ordinance,” said Sergeant Rich Himmel of Dana Point Police Services.

He explained that his priority is encouraging voluntary compliance, not necessarily ramping up citations.

“In the last five years, we have seen a 28 percent increase in calls for service. We’re not setting up a task-force for cigarette use. It’s just another tool in the tool-belt.”

If enforced, any person who is found to violate any provision of the new ordinance could face a fine not to exceed $100 dollars for the first violation, $200 dollars for the second violation within one year, and a $500 dollar fine for a third violation within one year.

DUI Enforcement Operations Planned for Weekend THE LATEST: Deputies from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department’s DUI Enforcement Team will be deploying to stop and arrest alcohol and drug-impaired drivers in the department’s ongoing traffic safety campaign.

DUI Saturation Patrols will deploy from 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26 to 2 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, in areas with high frequencies of DUI collisions and/or arrests in the city of Dana Point.

Whale and Dolphin Adventure ‘Art Lessons in the Wild’ Program Begins Jan. 27 The Wyland’s Whale and Dolphin Adventure “Art Lessons in the Wild” program begins Saturday, Jan. 27, and will continue every Saturday through April 28.

Open to children ages 3 to 12, this exclusive package includes an art lesson via video feed by renowned environmental artist Wyland and a two-hour whale watching adventure.

“The first time I saw a whale in the wild, it changed my life,” Wyland said. “It inspired me to become an artist and an advocate for marine life conservation. This partnership with Dana Wharf is part of our effort to encourage people to see the marine life off the Orange County coast in entirely new ways and introduce the next generation to this beautiful ecosystem.”

South County cities voted for legalizing recreational cannabis use

A

n emerald rush has come to California.

The Adult Use of Marijuana Act (AUMA) was enacted by the California Legislature in 2017, following the voterapproved Proposition 64 in 2016, which legalized recreational marijuana in the state.

It became law on Jan. 1. It is now legal for people 21 and older to consume marijuana at home, possess or gift up to one ounce of marijuana and grow up to six plants at home. Edible cannabis products are also enforced by weight, of which people can purchase and possess up to 8 grams.

Laws regarding cultivation for commercial facilities are much more complicated and are overseen by the state’s Bureau of Cannabis Control (BCC) within the Department of Consumer Affairs, Department of Food and Agriculture, and state Department of Public Health.

But just like the repeal of prohibition with alcohol, some cities and counties have enacted laws to curtail marijuana enterprises.

Local authority Attorney Michael Cindrich, the owner of the Law Offices of Michael E. Cindrich APC in San Diego, is a lifetime member of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Law (NORML) and has litigated on behalf of cannabis users’ rights.

“Part of the key elements that made Prop 64 attractive was that it provided the ability for individual cities and counties to have full authority to regulate cannabis activities, and part of that is the ability to ban cannabis,” Cindrich said.

Dana Point, like San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano, does not allow for commercial dispensaries to operate within city limits nor can delivery services for recreational marijuana be utilized within its borders, and people cannot consume it in public, just like alcohol.

By state law, businesses must apply for permits though the California Bureau of Cannabis Control, as well as their local governments, in order to operate dispensaries and cultivation centers.

Dana Point shares the same laws as San Clemente but goes further in prohibiting any cultivation of marijuana plants, whether they’re for commercial or personal use.

San Clemente allows people to grow up to six marijuana plants in their homes or accessory structures on the same property, and there is no permit application process for that.

voted in January 2016 to ban cannabis dispensaries and manufacturers, as well as marijuana delivery within the city, and residents who want to cultivate up to six plants for personal use can do so, but they must fill out a permit application with the city.

Susan Parmelee, the executive director of the Wellness and Prevention Center at San Clemente High School, said there are some pitfalls of normalizing cannabis that could affect youth.

“Now that we’ve made it recreational, we need to get rid of the medical designation until we have more research,” Parmelee said. “When kids hear that it’s medicine, they think it’s healthy. It makes kids think if it’s OK for adults, then it’s OK for them. We try to emphasize what it does to teen brains because teen brains are still growing, and that’s why we emphasize the law is for people 21 years old or older.”

She said the center will likely start a campaign to make students aware of the effects of adolescent cannabis use in the fall.

“I encourage adults to educate themselves on what today’s marijuana looks like and how it really affects a teen’s decisions,” Parmelee said.

Sergeant Rich Himmel of Dana Point Police Services Community Service Unit voiced that he had seen very little change in behavior since the Jan. 1 instatement.

“I do think that Prop 64 had a greater impact on cities that embraced sales (of marijuana).” Himmel said. He voiced that marijuana usage seemed to “no longer be a priority” in California and that what people did in the privacy and safety of their homes was their business.

Federal laws Nine states have legalized recreational marijuana, but at the federal level, cannabis is still a Schedule I drug, the highest degree of enforcement in the Drug Enforcement Administration’s list of controlled substances that could cause “the highest level of abuse.”

Making legal matters murkier, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions issued a

memo on Jan. 4 that rescinded the Obama administration guidelines which all but guaranteed that if dispensaries and commercial marijuana enterprises followed state laws, they should not fear prosecution. The memos from that time directed federal prosecutors to focus solely on cases regarding distribution to minors, drug cartels and other illicit activity under federal law.

Cindrich said this could cause some investors in the industry to think twice before putting more money into cannabis.

“I think any time the federal government issues orders for more flexibility to prosecute federal cannabis crimes, there’s reason to be concerned; however, we have not seen any enforcement taken,” Cindrich said. “Until that happens, it will be business as usual for those entities.”

California Southern Section U.S. District Attorney Adam Braverman, who is in charge of enforcing federal law in this district, issued a statement to NBC 7 San Diego in support of Sessions’ memo.

“The Department of Justice is committed to reducing violent crime and enforcing the laws as enacted by Congress. The cultivation, distribution and possession of marijuana has long been and remains a violation of federal law,” Braverman stated. “We will continue to utilize longestablished prosecutorial priorities to carry out our mission to combat violent crime, disrupt and dismantle transnational criminal organizations and stem the rising tide of the drug crisis.”

California’s Central District interim U.S. Attorney Nicola Hanna was appointed by Sessions just weeks ago, and there hasn’t been much reported on his view of the matter. Hanna must be confirmed within 120 days of the appointment. Despite the laws that govern recreational cannabis in the three South Orange County cities, San Clemente, Dana Point and San Juan Capistrano all voted in favor of Prop 64 in the 2016 general election, which legalizes recreational cannabis use, cultivation and delivery.

San Clemente voters were in favor of Prop 64, as 17,119 voted yes and 15,049 voted no, according to the Orange County Registrar of Voters’ statement of votes.

San Juan Capistrano voted 8,242 to 7,591 in favor of Prop 64 and Dana Point voted 9,849 to 7,760 in favor. All cities had a voter turnout of 84 percent or higher of their respective registered populations.

Letter of the cannabis law Although California has adopted legal use of recreational marijuana, there are some laws that have been slightly altered and some remain intact.

Illegal possession of more than 28.5 grams or an ounce of marijuana (for adults 21 and older) is a $100 to $500 ticket, but illegal cultivation of cannabis can be as much as six months in jail, and illegal sales to minors are a felony and punishable of three to seven years in jail.

Manufacturing concentrated marijuana illegally and without a license is punishable of three to seven years in jail and up to $50,000 in fines.

Outdoor cultivation for residents without a permit is still illegal.

Depending on the company, employers can still institute marijuana-free workplace policies as well as mandatory drug tests. Nothing in the new state laws protects employees’ rights to using marijuana off-site.

Driving under the influence of marijuana is also illegal. While it’s still difficult to determine whether someone is under the influence of the substance, drug recognition experts can be called to the scene to provide an assessment, such as nystagmus (or a shaking) of the eye pupil, an indicator of being under the influence. The enforcement is the same as current driving under the influence laws.

Where We Are Going and How We Are Getting There

I

n reflecting on the year that just passed and looking forward to the year ahead, I realize that the work county and local governments have been doggedly engaged in can be summarized in a single word: motion.

In July, we cleared ourselves completely from the last vestiges of the 1994 bankruptcy and we are speeding forward with a focus and alacrity befitting our inspired community. This year, residents across the county will marvel at where we are going, and how we are getting there.

From the Dana Point Harbor Revitalization project to the John Wayne Airport General Aviation Improvement Program to continued improvements on Interstate 5 in South County, the projects we are putting into motion will literally propel more residents, tourists and business leaders around the county.

The stunning—and hard-fought—improvements in transportation and public works will affect all of our day-to-day living and prospects for our future, as Orange County alleviates traffic burdens while simultaneously attracting more businesses and tourism dollars to our already thriving community.

We’ve also made relatively small changes that will result in incredibly big changes for many of our residents. For example, we have reduced taxes for homeowners and business owners participating in Urban Agricultural Incentive Zones for the City

of San Juan Capistrano, protected neighborhoods from unregulated commercial marijuana in unincorporated communities and commenced the next phase of flood protection projects in San Juan Creek.

Of all of our accomplishments, I am particularly proud of the Public Private Partnership (P3) model we invested in for the Dana Point Harbor Revitalization project. After 20 years of discussions, debates and regulatory challenges, the Dana Point Harbor Revitalization plan is underway THE BARTLETT through a P3 model that BULLETIN allows us to leverage

By Lisa Bartlett private sector expertise, create jobs, spur commercial retail growth and reduce our use of public funds—all while creating a celebrated gateway to the entire Orange County region.

Of course, new projects are not our only metric of success. As a county, we are responsible not only for infrastructure and growth but for one another.

This past year, we allocated additional resources toward the creation of permanent supportive housing for the homeless. Our plan will place more mentally ill homeless people into housing and connect them with the health care and other resources they need to get back on their feet. This $15 million mental health services allocation

will reduce our cost to care for these individuals, while providing them with stable homes and improved health outcomes.

We are also making government services more accessible to everyone. With the launch of three award-winning mobile apps, including myOCgov, Senior Resources Mobile App and myOC eServices, the county has increased the efficiency and effectiveness of government.

We’re making changes this year to our brick-and-mortar operations, too. Having approved a new Civic Center Master Plan, the county is on its way to building a new Civic Center that will feature a customercentric “one-stop” public service center for many government agencies. The effort will streamline interactions and improve public engagement, so the public can spend less time standing in lines and filling out forms.

And more time in motion.

Letters to the Editor OCSD NEEDS TO BRING BACK THE POLICE BLOTTER TOM BRABECK, Dana Point

As an almost 50-year resident of Dana Point, I am an avid reader of the Dana Point Times newspaper. While it informs me of current events, a critical piece has been left out—the police blotter. I called to inquire why it disappeared and was informed that the Orange County Sherriff’s Department (OCSD) has discontinued sending that report. It is important that OCSD reinstate this valuable piece of weekly information. This is information we all need to know, with regards to what crimes are being committed in our local neighborhoods. Then, if needed, we, the residents, can take further appropriate preventive action. Without it, we, especially senior citizens, feel vulnerable due to the lack of valuable information. literate and rely on this information via print.

Apparently, OCSD has forgotten that it is owned by “we the people.” It serves us well and we greatly appreciate all it does to keep us safe, yet this lack of information is a setback. If they still resist, then, if needed, The Freedom of Information Act should be used to bring back this data!

I

n a rather surprisingly, underwhelming awards season this year, there are still some movies that are worth seeing on the big screen. Despite most of them being pretty safe or typical of the filmmakers’ work, my two recommendations this week are also a little flawed, but still intriguing: Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me By Your Name and Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water.

As an almost spiritual follow-up to Todd Haynes’ Carol (2015), Call Me By Your Name is set in 1983 northern Italy, where 17-year-old Elio Perlman (Timothée Chalamet) spends his summer vacation in a love triangle between French peer Marzia (Esther Garrel) and a 24-year-old American, Oliver (Armie Hammer). The Shape of Water is like Del Toro’s take on E.T. (1982) and Beauty & the Beast (1991), but with his trademark

gore and “R” rating. In 1960s Cold Warera D.C., Eliza Esposito (Sally Hawkins) is a mute janitor who becomes attached to a powerful sea creature kept trapped in the government laboratory where she works.

Both films coincidentally also co-star one of the best character actors in modern film, Michael Stuhlbarg. Call Me By Your Name is one of the rare films to not be completely oversaturated with hype from an Oscar campaign. The acting from Chalamet is award-worthy and one of the best breakthrough performances in the past decade. Sufjan Stevens’ dreamy music score is breathtaking. The Shape of Water, on the other hand, is a bit heavy-handed in tone and theme, with two love scenes between a woman and fish being rather awkward. But the cinematography, art direction and special effects are dazzling on the big screen. DP

How Long should You Wait to Date after the Death of a Spouse?

I

n 24 years of writing about senior relationships, I’ve been asked many times, “How long should a widowed person wait to date?”

The most recent person to ask, Arlene of Laguna Woods, emailed, “What is a respectful time to wait to date after one’s spouse dies? A man I know is dating after six months of his wife’s passing. He’s in his mid-60s. I’ve asked many women what they think and what they say is, ‘It’s different for everyone.’ I say he could have waited a year out of respect for his deceased wife.”

The women who Arlene asked are correct: The length of time to wait to date again is different for everyone.

I don’t think respect is the issue here.

I don’t know any details about the man’s marriage. His wife could have been ill for years while he stood by her. If that were the case, he had already shown great respect for her.

Or, what if their marriage was unhappy and miserable? But out of respect for her and the institution of marriage, he hung in there. Waiting to date wouldn’t accomplish anything else.

A more important question: has he properly grieved and healed? If he hasn’t, he should not be dating. Men tend to date quicker than women after the death of a spouse. What often happens, particularly with new widowers, is that they are lonely; they start to date before they are ready. A nice woman comes along and falls in love with him.

A little later, he realizes he still misses his wife terribly and dumps the new

girlfriend. So, in protecting his heart, he breaks hers. That’s not good.

What’s the proper period to wait for grief recovery? Impossible to say. Many times, I’ve asked widows and widowers how long they waited to date.

One widow wrote: “You’ll know you’re ready when you no longer find yourself dwelling on the past comforting. Only you will know that.”

Another widow said: “After 21 years of marriage, it took me a good two years before I was emotionally ‘whole’ enough to consider another relationship. Up to that point, my incessant talk about my late husband would have made any man run in the opposite direction.”

Here’s where honesty is paramount. Out of respect for the new person, he should tell her he’s still grieving but feels they could become a loving couple, and, if she would be patient with him, it could work out. Then, as they go forward, they can openly and honestly discuss how things are progressing. In that way, no one gets blindsided.

Somewhat along that line, I had a friend whose mother saw a man she knew. His wife had died just months before. My friend said, “Mom questioned me whether

it was too soon after his wife had died for her to ask him out for coffee. I told her you can’t control when opportunity knocks, and if you don’t answer the knock, it may not return.

They had coffee. The next Sunday, the man took her to church. Six months later, they were married.”

A friend, Gale, told me years ago: “The man in my life had already done his grieving before his wife died, and no one has the right to dictate what that mourning period should be or for how long. That’s a right reserved exclusively for the partner left behind after a spouse dies.”

In other words, it’s no one’s business except the partner left behind on when they decide to date.

One thing is certain: As we enter our 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s, we don’t have a lot

of time to waste in deciding if we’re ready to date or not.

So, perhaps Arlene will not judge too harshly the mid-60s widower who is dating six months after his wife passed away.

Let’s hope he has adequately healed.

Wrestling Earns Four Podium Finishes, Fourth Place at San Clemente Dana Hills received some stellar results in the last tournament before the postseason.

At the San Clemente Rotary Tournament, Trevor Gulik earned gold in the 100-pound weight class. Erik Carreno (106), Kian Abedi (171) and Josh Harkey (182) all cracked the podium with third-place finishes.

Dana Hills also got fifth-place finishes from Jesus Bruno (120), Miguel Rodriguez (126) and Jeff Wind (160).

All of that added up to a fourth-place team finish for Dana Hills with 119.5 points. The Dolphins finished two points ahead of Santa Ana and just behind host San Clemente.

The Dolphins move on to the postseason with the Coast View Athletic Association finals at Capistrano Valley High on Jan. 27.

Boys Basketball Grabs First League Win Sea View League play hasn’t been kind to Dana Hills.

The Dolphins (13-10, 1-3) dropped their first two league games at home to San Juan Hills and Mission Viejo by a combined six points. Dana Hills then lost to the prohibitive league favorite and defending CIF-SS champion Capistrano Valley, 61-39, on Jan. 17.

But Dana Hills got a reprieve on Jan. 22 hosting Laguna Hills. The Dolphins scored a big win, 64-37, to get their first league victory. Dana Hills has gone 4-24 in its last 28 league games with three of the four wins coming against Laguna Hills.

Senior Cole Slagle led the way with 16 points, with 12 points in the first half.

Senior Devin Garland was right behind with 14 points. Junior Ben Carr scored 11 points.

Girls Basketball Halfway Through “Unfinished Business” Dana Hills finished second in league each of the last two seasons, but the Dolphins are halfway to getting back to where they want to be.

Dana Hills (12-8, 4-0) has turned a corner in league play after a 4-8 stretch that followed a 5-0 start. Three of the Dolphins’ four league wins have been by 18 points or more. The other win was a five-point game over defending league champion Trabuco Hills.

Dana Hills, No. 10 in CIF-SS Division 2A, is motivated by what Coach Anne Honey called “unfinished business” with those second-place finishes.

On Jan. 18, the Dolphins had a dominant middle stretch in a 56-33 win over Capistrano Valley. Dana Hills scored 23 unanswered points from the second quarter into the third quarter. Dana Hills led by as much as 34 points in the fourth quarter.

Sophomore Maicie Saia had a huge night with a game-high 20 points.

Junior Maya McArthur had a doubledouble with 11 points and 13 rebounds.

The Dolphins followed up with a 20-point win over Laguna Hills, 69-49, on Jan. 22. Dana Hills dominated the second quarter, 19-5, and fourth quarter, 21-11, to pull away.

Four players got into double figures for the Dolphins. Saia again led the way with 22 points, and McArthur had a huge double-double with 16 points and 20 rebounds. Junior Olivia Chambers scored 16 points, and Junior Camille Deol scored 14 points.

The results of the Dana Hills game at Mission Viejo on Jan. 25 were not available at press time. The Dolphins continue league play at Capistrano Valley on Jan. 30.

Girls Soccer Tied for Second in League Dana Hills continues to get solid results in league play.

The Dolphins (4-6-2, 2-1-1) picked up back-to-back wins over Laguna Hills, 2-0, on Jan. 16 and Tesoro, 2-1, on Jan. 18. The wins pulled Dana Hills into a tie with Aliso Niguel for second in the South Coast League.

The results of Dana Hills’ match against San Clemente on Jan. 25 were not available at press time, but the Dolphins continue in league against Aliso Niguel on Jan. 30. DP

I kind of got a lot of bumps and bruises last week getting back into it. I’m excited to get better and get more friendships with these kids that I haven’t played with but played against a lot.

What is your favorite part about football?

I just love the friendships you can make, the brotherhood. But also, just the contact and the physicality behind it. You can let loose whenever you want on any play.

What is your favorite high school football memory?

It’s got to be winning homecoming my senior year against Santa Monica. Great memory with all of my friends I’ve played with for years.

Super Bowl: Patriots or Eagles?

Foilboarding is opening new doors for surf riders and Dave Boehne is going to fly through them

D

ave Boehne, surfboard shaper for Infinity Surfboards in Dana Point and overall enthusiastic waterman, believes that foilboarding could hold the key to releasing wave-riding from one of its natural challenges—limited wave resources.

“It’s seriously the best. It’s so quiet. You feel like you are up so high and all you can hear is the wind rushing by you. It’s like flying. It’s like nothing else I’ve ever done,” Boehne said about foilboarding, the new wave riding trend that is quickly gaining popularity across the world.

Foilboarding could open up new doors for wave-riders as the boards excel in the slow-rolling, deep-water waves that are generally not considered ideal for traditional surf craft. Expansion into new wave riding territories could provide relief for the crowded high-class surf breaks of places like Southern California.

“For a long time, people were on the fence about it. Now, they’ve had the chance to try one out, watch it for a while, work out a few of the kinks and are committing to it,” Boehne explained, sharing that he has recently began selling multiple foilboards out of Infinity Surfboards’ shaping bay.

“Half of the people trying foilboarding are coming from surfing, and half are people coming from the stand-up paddleboard community,” Boehne said, explaining how the performance surf community Page 12

has historically been slower to adopt new wave-riding practices.

Now, Boehne and Infinity have become one of California’s premier foilboard producers by crafting boards specifically suited for every user’s needs.

“They’re remarkably similar to airplanes,” Boehne said. “Much more similar to airplanes than surfboards, really.”

Similar to a surfboard, a foam blank is shaped with specific foilboard characteristics such as unique foam distribution and specifically shaped rails as to encourage lift. This is attached to a series of foils called a mast. The foils, that could be called the wings, can be wider and flatter to increase stability and lift at lower speeds, or narrower and more concave for sensitivity at higher speeds while providing a bit less lift.

Boehne estimated that a rider needs to maintain a speed of approximately five miles-an-hour in order to achieve flight where the board lifts off of the water by way of the foils. Only the mast connecting the rider’s board to the foil is touched on top of the water below.

Boehne believes that foilboarding has a stiff learning curve and should be approached with caution by the user as well as ensuring safety for others in the water.

“It’s so fun, but they are heavy and they are sharp,” Boehne said. “Wear a helmet when you start and if you can, spend some time behind a boat so that you can spend that time on your feet and feel out the board. It will really help your learning curve out in the waves.”

Currently considered in the same category as a surfboard, it is now commonplace to see foilboarders in popular surf and SUP spots such as Dog Patch in San Onofre State Park or Doheny State Beach.

Best Surfers, Worst Schedule San Clemente and Dana Point are a hotbed for America’s top surf talent, so why does the area remain largely ignored by the WSL?

oming off of a huge year, Orange County will see three surfers— Kolohe Andino, Pat Gudauskas and Griffin Colapinto—repping the bear republic on the WSL’s Championship Tour (CT) in 2018. Colapinto finished the year with a Triple Crown title, something no surfer from the West Coast has ever accomplished.

Unfortunately, the up-and-coming kids from California on the WSL Qualifying Series (QS) are going to have to wait a couple of months before they can compete in local waters. And for those who live in San Clemente or Dana Point, more road time is a fact of life. When the WSL announced the 2018 Championship Tour and Qualifying Series schedules, they were decidedly void of any local flavor.

The annual Hurley Pro and Swatch Pro have been canceled, traded for a contest at Kelly Slater’s Surf Ranch in Lemoore, California—300 miles away, right in the middle of California’s cattle country. And at this point, it doesn’t appear a conciliatory QS contest at Lowers will land on the schedule this year either.

The first QS contest in California is the Jack’s Pro in the middle of March. As far as valuable rating points go, it’s fairly lowrated, but may be good for kick-starting

a campaign. The next contest isn’t until June, the Shoe City Pro, again in Huntington Beach. And the WSL is back in Huntington one more time at the end of July for the U.S. Open of Surfing, the highest rated surf contest to hit mainland shores.

Come fall, there’s the Pismo Beach Pro in Central California and the Cold Water Classic in Santa Cruz. The Shoe City Pro, the Pismo Beach Pro and the Cold Water Classic are all listed as “tentative,” so they remain up in the air. Other than that, there are a couple of stops in Virginia and North Carolina. All told, the United States is severely underserved by the WSL schedule.

The rub is that right now California’s enjoying a boom in the talent department.

the tip of the proverbial spear. There are so many good, young men and women waiting in the wings. Every week we have kids from the South Orange County area winning WSL pro juniors, NSSA contests, WSA contests, USA surfing contests and all the other great specialty events that are out there for groms these days. Looking at the results every week is staggering, or maybe inspiring is a better word because behind every successful kid is a great family, and San Clemente and Dana Point are consistently producing some of the top talent in the country, not to mention the world.

Yet, there’s no WSL involvement in the area as of right now. Three contests in Huntington? That’s all the biggest market in surfing can muster? I know a lot of

win in the girl’s longboard division and a finals appearance in the girls shortboard division. She also recently got the opportunity to shape a board with Capo Beach’s craftsman Josh Martin, son of late Hobie master board builder Terry Martin.

“Josh is an amazing shaper, and his father shaped boards for my great-grandpa, my great-aunt and a few other greats in my life,” Indie said. “Watching, learning and helping him shape my board really showed me that a lot of work goes into a surfboard.”

At the end of the day, the same things that motivated and inspired her greatgrandpa are what’s driving Indie’s passion.

“The days we all surf as a family are my favorite. I love teaching my little brother.

Seeing all of us on a wave together is pretty magical,” she smiled. DP

INDIE HOFFMAN

eet the latest multitalented surfer to put a stitch in the Hoffman family tapestry—Dana Point’s Indie Hoffman. Graceful on a longboard, stoked to roll around on a skateboard, and not half bad in the shaping bay, the 11-yearold is carrying the family’s passion for the ocean into the next generation.

“My great-grandpa, Walter, once told me that the Hoffman name in surfing is relying on me to keep it going, and it makes me feel so happy to be sharing the love of surfing with everyone I meet,” Indie said.

locals who are happy to see the Lowers contest go. It takes a couple weeks of the autumn surf season out of play, but on the flip side, every year our local groms have the opportunity to come down to the cobblestones and watch their favorite surfers do their thing. It shouldn’t be underestimated the impact that can have on a young person’s life.

When I was young, my family lived in Northern California and my folks would take me to Ocean Beach in San Francisco every time the Bud Pro Tour came around. I’ll never forget Matt “Archy” Archbold getting out of the cold, turbulent waters in a purple, short-sleeve Lanty wetsuit. This was before the tats, when his hair was long and he was just this radical, mysterious personality. Up on the boardwalk he was standing with some friends. He looked at his wrist, and said, “Dude, I got my…watch ripped off out there.”

I was probably 12 and will forever remember thinking how gnarly Archy was because he got his watch ripped off. Seems petty now, but he became my favorite surfer thereafter. Twenty years down the track, I was fortunate enough to still live the dream and work at SURFER Magazine. Interviewing the late world champ Andy Irons, I asked him who his favorite surfer was.

“Archy, hands down,” he said. “He was so radical.”

Turns out, both of us were impressionable young groms when Archy came into our lives. He inspired Andy to go out, smash the establishment and win three titles. And I’m sitting here today writing these words partly because of that chance encounter so long ago.

The point is that when it comes to producing talent and getting people stoked on surfing, there’s nothing better than experiencing it firsthand. Webcasts are great, but smelling the wax and seeing the drama unfold before a kid’s eyes is the stuff memories are made of, and who knows where that may lead. DP
