Five things Dana Point should know this week Homeless Task Force Holds Meeting at OC Sailing and Events Center THE LATEST: On Jan. 28, more than 60 Dana Point residents joined the almost 20-person panel of the Dana Point Homeless Task Force (HTF) meeting led by City Council member Paul Wyatt.

During the meeting, which was held at the OC Sailing & Events Center in the Dana Point Harbor due to steadily increasing public attendance, the panel discussed a plethora of topics surrounding homelessness.

Kelly Reenders, Dana Point’s economic development manager, made a presentation of a new public information directive to inform community members of legislative and social issues surrounding homelessness. Later in the meeting, Toni Nelson, founder of Capo Cares, offered the first public presentation of the Dana Point Homes for the Homeless Challenge, a callto-action for the private citizens of Dana Point to financially support the “housingfirst” perspective practiced by the Challenge’s beneficiaries, Mercy House and Family Assistance Ministries (FAM) in an effort to balance “compassion for both the homeless and the community.”

After breaking down the Challenge’s financial goal of raising $680,000 annually for permanent supportive housing for Dana Point’s chronically homeless and $150,000 in order to fund one-time costs of rapid rehousing for Dana Point’s newly homeless, Nelson emphasized the need for support from all stakeholders benefitting from the housing of Dana Point’s homeless.

WHAT’S NEXT: Nelson was optimistic that the presentation would have a direct impact on the growth of the Challenge’s fundraising.

Dana Point Harbor Advisory Board Selected THE LATEST: On Jan. 29, a selection committee convened and selected members to represent eight Dana Point Harbor community stakeholder’s categories in a new Dana Point Advisory Board (DPHAB).

Nine members were selected from more than 30 candidate applications.

The members selected for the new DPHAB are: Wet slip tenant representatives James Lenthall and Greg McDowell, dry boat storage/trailer boater/personal watercraft user representative William Kindel, restaurateur representative Jim Miller, landside merchant representative Diana Poulos of White Pelican, waterside merchant representative Donna Kalez of Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching, club and social organization representative John Yamasaki of Dana Outrigger Canoe Club, education and community service organization’s representative Daniel Pingaro of the Ocean Institute and at-large member Robert Hartung.

The selection committee also endorsed Stacy Blackwood, director of OC Parks, and Mark Denny, city manager of Dana Point, as ex-officio members to represent the County of Orange and the city of Dana Point.

WHAT’S NEXT: James Lenthall, president of the Dana Point Boaters Association, described the DPHAB as a committee of private citizens of non-binding authority that will work to make recommendations directly to OC Parks and 5th District Supervisor Lisa Bartlett’s office. Officer-Involved Shooting on Pacific Coast Highway on Jan. 28 THE LATEST: Sgt. Rich Himmel of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department (OCSD) has confirmed further details pertaining to the Jan. 28 officer-involved shooting on Pacific Coast Highway in Dana Point.

Sgt. Himmel said that at 1:26 a.m. on Jan 28, a California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer attempted to stop a stolen vehicle in the vicinity of Pacific Coast Highway and Selva Road. The suspect rammed and disabled the CHP officer’s vehicle, and an officer-involved shooting occurred.

OCSD’s Public Information Officer Carrie Braun released a statement Thursday morning that stated a CHP officer sustained minor injuries unrelated to the shooting. That officer was treated at a local hospital and has since been released.

Sgt. Himmel explained that the suspect drove away, and a large-scale search was initiated involving helicopters, dogs and numerous deputies. At approximately 3 a.m., the suspect’s vehicle was discovered abandoned in a ravine about a mile from the location of the initial incident.

An hour later, the male suspect was located hiding in a restroom at the Monarch Beach Resort, suffering from the gunshot wound he received during the initial exchange. The suspect was taken into custody, without incident, and was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.

There are no outstanding suspects.

Founder of ‘Just a Penny Please’ Begins Walk Across America in Dana Point THE LATEST: Michael “Cappi” Capozzoli is walking across America from Dana Point to Boston’s Fenway Park. The 3,000-mile journey, estimated to take more than 300 days, is Capozzoli’s effort to raise awareness and funding for a pet friendly and safe/transitional house in his home community of Sedona, Arizona.

After a life-changing experience as a young father in his 20s, Capozzoli, 66, became dedicated to the cause of raising funds and awareness for women’s rights and domestic and child abuse victims.

Sitting in a lawn chair outside of his trailer in the parking lot of the Laguna Cliffs Marriot Resort & Spa where his transport vehicle was parked, Capozzoli said that he has been training for this walk his entire life.

“I haven’t had to train, because I was never out of shape,” Capozzoli said. “If I help just one kid, this whole trip will be worth it.”

Before departing on Feb. 1, Capozzoli attended a Monarch Beach Sunrise Rotary Club meeting with Dana Point Assistant City Manager Mike Killebrew, where they raised more than $210 dollars for Capozzoli’s nonprofit 501(C)(3) organization called Just a Penny Please.

Be a Big Cheese 2 Emphasizes Need for Awareness of Human Trafficking THE LATEST: For its second consecutive year, the i-5 Freedom Network hosted it’s Be a Big Cheese event, which raises funds for the organization’s classes on combating human trafficking.

More than 120 people registered for the event, which was hosted at The Cellar in San Clemente, and auction items were sold for as much as $2,500 each—the event raised a total of $15,000.

Speakers included Geri Cerkovnik, the CEO of Carnegie OC; Jaimee January, a survivor support specialist; and Lt. Mike Peters, the San Clemente Chief of Police.

Human trafficking has been detected frequently along Interstate 5 in Orange County and many other parts of California, as it provides traffickers with a wide berth of transportation.

Liquid Gold Dana Point’s Brandon Phillips looks to assist USA Surfing to Olympic Gold in 2020 Games

n Sept. 28, 2015, the Olympic Organizing Committee announced surfing as an officially recognized Olympic competition in the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo, Japan.

In January, Brandon Phillips of Dana Point was declared an assistant coach for USA Surfing, the official sanctioning body of surfing for the United States Olympic Committee.

Phillips, a Salt Creek local and father of three, joins head coach Joey Buran in leading team USA toward a gold medal in what the International Olympic Committee has called, “the most exciting new sport in the Olympics in 2020.”

‘I Remember My Heroes’

Phillips’ family roots go back three generations in South Orange County, and he currently resides in Dana Point.

Catching his first waves at Salt Creek, Phillips quickly developed an interest in a variety of alternative sports. He had a professional career as a snowboarder before working for Etnies, a board-sport footwear company, where he worked in marketing and team management.

Following his career at Etnies, Phillips opened Vert Performance in San Clemente where he relied upon his diverse passions in surfing/skateboarding/snowboarding as well as physical training and management to groom the next generation of board-sport athletes.

His unique experience in physicalperformance training as well as athlete management affords Phillips a particular insight into the deep relationships involved in modern surfing competition.

“I remember the guys that used to take interest in the kids at Creek that really showed passion,” Phillips said. “Whatever I’ve done, wherever I’ve been, I’ve always had this drive to keep my finger on the pulse of these kids here in South Orange County.”

When a coaching hero of Phillips’, former Pipe Master Joey Buran from North County San Diego, was announced as the USA Surfing head coach in the beginning of 2017, Phillips took interest.

Phillips reached out to Buran, after some time, he was invited to join Buran and his squad for a USA Surfing training session in Oceanside where he observed Buran, further soaking in his techniques.

“It was nice because I was able to sit back and watch, and I was comfortable in my zone because I knew a large amount of the kids from competitions, and from Vert Performance,” Phillips said.

Buran, commenting on this initial meeting, said he immediately appreciated Phillips’ positive attitude and style with the kids, noting that he had a “unique” sensitivity to not just physical technique, but the emotional and social complexities that surround young competitive athletes.

Earlier in January, after a series of training sessions with the USA Surfing team attended by Phillips, Buran invited Phillips to attend the first USA Surfing Prime event of the 2018 season at Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz.

On Jan. 12, Phillips’ 31st birthday, Buran and the USA Surfing staff announced that Phillips would be a new assistant coach.

‘Coaches Need Coaches Too’

“It was just so humbling,” Phillips said.

“I had this vision, and it felt like it was all finally working, coming together. You hear the stories of the hard work and the long hours, and it hasn’t all been roses on this path, but I believe in this. I believe in this program.”

“Guys like Kevyn Dean (of DSC Performance in San Clemente), Jim Hogan and Erik Krammer have put in so many hours,” Phillips said. “This means the world to me, and I want to be a part of what I think is best for the sport of surfing.”

Integral to what Phillips said he believes is a positive progression for the sport of surfing is the validation and resources of support the Olympic Committee provides.

“Support from the Olympic committee is absolutely next-level. To learn from, and to be surrounded by gold-winning programs and coaches, that’s going to help us become gold-winning coaches and produce gold-winning athletes,” Phillips said.

He’s also excited to participate in what he called “crossover coach-training,” and that recognition by the Olympic committee does come with a sense of validation for surfing.

Phillips said the inclusion of surfing in the Olympic Games puts the sport of surfing in an unarguable position for financial and resourceful support from local governments and community members.

“This brings credibility to everything I’ve been doing—that we’ve all been doing.

These kids chose surfing, and in a way, the Olympics recognize that it was a good choice,” Phillips said.

‘We Want to Create a Dynasty’

This February, the International Olympic Committee will unveil the official qualification system for the 2020 Olympic Games, which will be governed by the International Surfing Association (ISA).

For Phillips and Buran, there is no time to waste, as coaching the USA Surfing team requires much more than simply producing a team for the 2020 Games.

“You can think of it as a ‘farm-league’ of sorts,” said Buran, when describing their positions as coaching the next generation.

“The ultimate goal of the USA Surfing

team is to identify and train athletes who are trending toward Olympic-caliber performance in order to win gold for the United States in the Olympic Games.”

This involves training and management assistance for these young athletes, who Phillips and Buran said they hope to shield from distraction as they train to become Olympians.

USA Surfing consists of an Under-18 team, Under-16 team and development programs for both male and female surfers. The initial focus for Phillips and Buran is on performing well at the 2018 and 2019 ISA World Junior Championships.

Buran and his team won gold in the World Juniors event in 2017.

To repeat gold, USA Surfing will be counting on Phillips’ technical coaching skills as well as his nuanced sensitivity in reading into the intense psychological and emotional atmosphere of competitive surfing.

“He’s got a servant’s heart,” Buran said of Phillips. “We come from similar perspectives. We both want to give these kids the true Olympic experience.”

Maybe after giving so much, the next thing Phillips can claim for himself will be a gold medal.

Members of the Laguna Niguel-based St. Anne School’s HarmonKnights Show Choir recently traveled to Vatican City to participate in the third annual Youth and Young Adult Choir Festival for Epiphany.

The students sang for the mass at the Basilica of St. Francis and the Papal Mass for the Feast of Epiphany at St. Peter’s Basilica in front of Pope Francis I. San Clemente eighth-graders Melia Hahn and Garrett Reissmueller were part of the choir.

“The students were directed by St. Anne School choir director Karen Franson and the Director of Music Ministries and Organist for Christ Cathedral in the Diocese of Orange California, Dr. John A. Romeri.”

While on the trip, students also had the opportunity to explore ancient Rome, including the Roman ruins, 17th-century palaces, 15th-century churches and 20thcentury monuments.

Currently, the federal government has scheduled a single public hearing in Sacramento on Feb. 8 to cover the entire state.

On Jan. 4, the Trump administration released the 2019-2024 draft plan to drill for oil and gas in U.S. waters. The proposal has been met by opposition from local, state and federal leaders in almost every coastal state.

“Oil drilling remains deeply unpopular in California where seven in 10 people oppose new offshore drilling, according to a July 2017 survey from the Public Policy Institute of California. Tourism, recreation and fishing along California’s coast generate nearly $20 billion a year and support 400,000 jobs,” a press release stated.

The American Dream Revisited

I

f there’s one habit I’ve indulged in over the years, it’s regularly reading letters to the editor in every newspaper I come across. Although many of them are tirades of one sort or another, every so often I come across an opinion which causes me to think twice. Several days ago, the title of one upset me when it proclaimed, “The American Dream is Out of Reach.”

The text of the letter was more upsetting, bemoaning that “… life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone,” while offering as a solution only, “Think twice about who we vote for.”

The phrase “The American Dream,” which dates back to James Truslow Adams’ 1931 book, The Epic of America, had come to represent an assurance of the abundance of material goods, and in particular, home ownership and a college education for all. To a certain extent, I tended to focus in on the concept and realize I’ve lived my life with those values foremost in

Letters to the Editor ANTI-TRUMP PROTEST/RESIST AT THE OUTLETS AT SAN CLEMENTE HARRY TOUART, San Clemente

I stumbled upon a highly organized protest gathering at the Outlets at San Clemente on Jan. 20. While grabbing a coffee at Starbucks around 8 a.m., I noticed close to 200 people gathering under the parking structure. Most were carrying antigovernment slogans, such as slurs toward President Donald Trump, #Resist and #BlackLivesMatter signs. Several people were wearing those ridiculous looking protest beanies with the two knots on top.

I stopped by to ask the security guard what was up. He told me an organization had rented out the parking structure to bus everyone to an antigovernment protest. This was obviously a very clandestine place to set up and well planned, out of the public eye, hidden inside the parking structure. There were four large buses inside the structure that were loaded with people to ship to a protest. Some political organization spent a large sum of money to set this up.

If the owners of the Outlets of San Clemente are supporting this antigovernment movement then I will never spend another dime there and will boycott the Outlets, which already has a sore spot with much Dana Point Times February 2–8, 2018

I’ll give you my opinion. Both sides have it wrong. It’s still possible to enjoy the blessings of this bountiful land. For a person of no more than average ability, willing to work systematically to earn a livelihood, to abide by the fundamental rule that you consistently spend less than you earn, and who refuses to be duped by the hordes of unscrupulous marketing rogues which

populate the landscape, a rewarding life is still attainable.

My point: “The American Dream” is alive and well. Though James Truslow Adams, a freelance author who helped popularize American history, departed this earth almost 70 years ago, his concept that each citizen can attain a certain degree of success in this favored nation is still valid. But be aware that it’s a singular achievement, not a community project. It won’t be collectively handed out; it must be individually earned.

In case no one has noticed, the California government is out of control. Lately, a couple of legislative pearls have emerged from state lawmakers. One bill is proposed to fine waiters $1,000 for offering straws to customers who don't ask for them; and then the wonder of wonders, half of any savings that a corporate entity that makes $1 million or more, as a result of tax-cut savings, has to be given back and used for housing for the poor. Are they kidding?

Why does the government always think that they know how to spend our money better than we do?

Finally, of very great importance to Dana Point and all California coastal areas,

is the Coastal Commission, whose initial charter stated that owners of coastal property have a right to protect their property, has now moved to the concept of managed retreat, which is a concept inherently flawed and severely conflicting with constitutional law. Please excuse me for painting a picture of what seems to me to be a derailed train. Like you all, I love California, but right now it seems to be a laughing stock of our nation.

At the Movies: Lampoon Gets the Last Laugh in ‘A Futile and Stupid Gesture’

o many who grew up in the late 1970s and 1980s, National Lampoon was a big turning point in pop culture for those transitioning from childhood to adulthood. The modest risqué, crude humor magazine quickly found a cult following in 1973, and then eventually began producing their own popular raunchy comedies like Animal House (1978), Caddyshack (1980) and Vacation (1983).

This past week, Netflix released the biopic A Futile and Stupid Gesture on Lampoon

founding member Doug Kenney’s brief life before dying at age 33 in 1980.

Comedy filmmaker David Wain, who has his own cult fanbase, with a definite love-itor-hate-it type of humor, might appear to be a good match for the Lampoon backstory.

But it quickly becomes prominent that the film is a missed opportunity elsewhere. With Wain’s efforts, we get a very ironic, tonguein-cheek account through narration provided by 73-year-old Martin Mull as an “old” Kenney; and 45-year-old Will Forte portraying Kenney from his college years up to his

death. Domhnall Gleeson plays Kenney’s creative partner, Henry Beard; Emmy Rossum appears as Kenney’s girlfriend, Kathryn Walker; and Joel McHale plays Chevy Chase.

A Futile and Stupid Gesture shows the quick rise to stardom of the eccentric man and his magazine and its influence, particularly on Saturday Night Live. But the pacing is almost too quick and gimmicky to be fully appreciated, with the casting and meta tone all over the place. Longtime fans of Lampoon might want to stick with the original book with the same title by Josh Karp. DP

n Jan. 25, the Dana Point Chamber of Commerce held its Annual Meeting & Installation Dinner at Monarch Beach Resort.

The banquet hall, full of elected officials, local business owners and Chamber members gathered to induct new Chamber Board Members as well as honor outgoing Board Members.

Jay Styles, of Wind & Sea Restaurant, was installed as the new Chamber Chairman in place of outgoing Chairwoman Kim Tilly of the Dana Point Harbor Association. The two embraced on stage before Styles gave a heartfelt speech acknowledging the big shoes Tilly left him to fill.

A series of awards to local businesses and business community members were awarded during the event including Monarch Beach Resort which was selected as 2017 Business of the Year. Other finalists for Business of the Year included The District Salon, Doheny Village Hand Car Wash and The Shwack Beach Grill.

Regina McGrath was named 2017 Ambassador of the Year and Donna Kalez, General Manager of Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching, was named 2017 Dana Point Citizen of the Year.

“Being selected for Citizen of the Year is a huge honor because of the past (winners) that choose who it (Citizen of the Year) goes to. It’s inspiring to me to have these pillars of our community select me and it validates all the hard work because I love Dana Point so much!” Kalez said after the event.

This was Bev Jorgensen’s first Annual Meeting & Installation Dinner as Executive Director of the Dana Point Chamber of Commerce and she thought the evening went without a hitch.

The dinner was more than installing our new Board and honoring the outgoing Board. It was about recognizing the businesses and people in our community that go above and beyond. Next year we will be incorporating more business award categories to honor all those who work so hard throughout the year.”

T

he question as to whether animals feel emotions has been argued for years. While anyone with pets or those whom have spent a significant amount of time observing animals in the wild is quick to testify that animals show fear, love, compassion, empathy and jealousy, scientists have been hesitant to take a firm stance on animal sentience.

There is a vast quantity of research to support that your dog really does “smile” when you walk in the door. One study from the Center for Neuroeconomics Studies at Claremont Graduate University showed significant increase in oxytocin, also known as the “neurochemical of love,” in animals after they’d spent time together. There are numerous documented accounts of animals putting themselves at risk to help others. In one case, a partially blind older woman had become lost and was guided to safety by a group of elephants. Another account reports a humpback whale carrying a seal on her back aiding in its escape from killer whales. Chimpanzees have been seen holding hands while watching the sunset together, rats will sacrifice their food to save a drowning friend and spotted dolphins mourn the loss of their young by buoying the limp bodies on their backs.

Emotions stem from a part of the brain called the limbic system and some marine mammals have limbic systems four times larger than ours. While we are quick to assume those species with smaller limbic systems feel less emotion than we do, there is resistance to the idea that species with larger limbic systems might possess cognitive abilities that we do not. In his essay Beyond Words: How Animals Think and Feel, conservationist and author Carl Safina argued that animals might experience life more vividly and in ways we can’t fathom.

Safina also wrote The Eye of the Albatross: Visions of Hope and Survival, about one of the most emotive species in existence—possibly even more romantic than humans. Albatrosses mate for life and are incredibly devoted to their partners even though they spend 95 percent of their time in flight over the open oceans. It can take 10-15 years for an albatross to choose the right partner, but once committed, they are faithful until death—which can be up to 50 years later.

The romantic albatross was immortalized in Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and has since been a maritime icon. Coincidentally,

Coleridge is credited for the origin of the phrase “the birds and the bees” which makes one wonder if the albatross was in fact the “bird” to inspire this famous metaphor. While most albatrosses are primarily found in the Southern Hemisphere, Laysan and black-footed albatrosses can also be spotted off the coasts of Southern California. They breed on remote islands, such as Midway Atoll, which in recent years has gained notoriety as a symbol of the plastic pollution crisis and its devastating impacts. Artist and filmmaker Chris Jordan illustrates these statistics through chilling photographs of the contents of albatross stomachs found on Midway, and in his film Albatross: A Love Story for Our Time from the Heart of the Pacific is a stunning chronicle of the harsh reality facing these special birds, and some may even say emotional birds. Scientists estimate that by mid-century, 99 percent of seabirds will have plastic in their stomachs unless we make drastic changes to stop the flow of pollution.

Whether you believe animals can feel or not, perhaps the more pertinent question is how we can show compassion for other species and our environment.

OBITUARY

Robert “Bubba” Beauchamp Jr.

Robert Floyd Beauchamp Jr., “Bubba” passed away peacefully at his home in San Clemente on Tuesday, January 16, 2018.

From his birth in Pasadena, on December 13, 1940, to his death, Bubba nourished the people around him with joy, love, faith and laughter.

Bubba had a deep passion for the ocean and boating, sailing around the world on the family’s 70’ Olson “The Dorothy O” and competitively racing Hobie Cats off local and distant shorelines, bonding with family and making lasting friendships along the way.

He graduated from California State University, Long Beach and embarked on a successful teaching career. He had two children, Cheryl and Robert III, whom he adored. Bubba began his second career as Manager of his familyoperated marina in Dana Point Harbor, Dana West Marina.

Bubba married the love of his life and best friend, Judith (Luttrell) Beauchamp, on March 12, 2005.

Bubba was larger than life with an unforgettable smile and contagious laughter. He lives on in the hearts of his wife, children, grandchildren, siblings, family & many friends.

Dolphin Dreams Dana Hills boys soccer has playoff hopes after nearly matching their league win total from the last four seasons

n the previous four seasons, the Dana Hills boys soccer team had only won four league games.

It’s a figure only worsened by the fact that the Dolphins were winless in league for the last two seasons.

All of that together only makes Dana Hills’ turnaround this season all the more remarkable. The Dolphins won their third

game of league on Jan. 31 with a 3-0 win over Tesoro and could match that four-year total against last-place Laguna Hills on Friday, Feb. 2.

It’s a run and a sensation that Dana Hills’ 16 seniors haven’t experienced in their high school careers.

“We’re feeling good. We want to keep doing this,” senior midfielder and captain Kasra Diba said. “We want to keep winning

and going far in league. It’s definitely different from last year. No one has their head down going into every game thinking the season is over. We have something to play for. That’s definitely the difference.”

That something is a potential playoff berth.

With the change to a points-based “competitive equity” system, the Dolphins aren’t necessarily guaranteed a playoff spot as the league’s No. 2 representative as they would have been the last time they made the playoffs in 2013.

However, Dana Hills is making its case with its run of play, and that tangible possibility brings an energy to each player’s face.

“It would be a dream come true for me,” Diba said. “I’ve been watching Dana, I’ve been on the team for four years. I’ve been waiting to make CIF and play in CIF and to do it with this team would be amazing.”

“It would be amazing,” senior captain and leading goal-scorer Bobby Reynolds said.

“Not playing in CIF the past three years I’ve played here, it’d just be electrifying for us.

What a payoff for a great season.”

What sparked this turnaround season?

Coach Mark Torrianni cited the buy-in from his players.

“Without a doubt, everyone is committed to the cause,” Torrianni said. “We’ve had some ups and downs. We’ve made some mistakes, but overall, I think the boys have a vision of where they want to be and what they want to do and they’ve stuck to it.”

The commitment has led to a strong worth ethic, and that strong work ethic has led to the on-field results.

Girls Basketball Nearing League Title Dana Hills added two more dominating wins to stay unbeaten in the Sea View League.

With a 31-point win over Mission Viejo on Jan. 25 and a 41-point win over Capistrano Valley on Jan. 30, the Dolphins (14-8, 6-0) are on the precipice of their first league title since 2013.

Dana Hills stars continued to shine in the win over Mission Viejo. Sophomore Maicie Saia scored 23 points and added five steals.

Junior Maya McArthur put together another double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. It was her 14th double-double in Dana Point Times February 2–8, 2018

“I think we just play really well together,” Reynolds said. “We’re clicking. The team chemistry is great this year. In past years, we haven’t been on the same page.

This year, we’ve been like one team and one unit.”

All of these good feelings and the positive movement have cultivated a united atmosphere among the Dolphins.

“There’s just this cohesiveness with the team that’s really never been there,” Diba said. “We’ve had a lot of ego in the past, and there’s none of that anymore. I feel like a family with this team for the first time in four years.”

The head of that family is Torrianni. In his first full season as head coach, Torrianni’s ability to communicate has helped foster this positive environment, according to Diba.

“He has a different relationship with every single player,” Diba said. “He talks to us after every practice, before every practice. He’ll take us to the side if he needs to tell us something. We all love that. We love that he’ll be straightforward with us and we’ll be straightforward with him too.”

Torrianni’s X’s and O’s have hit as well.

The Dolphins have recently embraced a more direct attacking style, and it showed with two goals by Reynolds in the first six minutes against Tesoro on Jan. 31.

Dana Hills is likely to split its final two games against last-place Laguna Hills and first-place Capistrano Valley. That would keep the Dolphins in a solid second place.

No matter the final result, the hard work and commitment has already paid off. DP

Dana Hills had an opportunity to clinch at least a share of the league title against Laguna Hills on Feb. 1. Results were not available at press time, but Dana Hills won by 20 points at Laguna Hills on Jan. 22.

Captain Kian Abedi, ranked No. 3 in the county at 170 pounds, took on county No. 1 Cody Burdette of Trabuco Hills in the title match, but Burdette won by pin.

Erick Carreno (106 lbs.), Miguel Rodriguez (126lbs.), Gavin Walker (132 lbs.), Colin Reider (138 lbs.), captain Levi Jones (145 lbs.) and Josh Harkey (182 lbs.) all found the podium in second place for the Dolphins.

By finishing in the top five, all seven wrestlers advance to the CIF-SS Coastal Division Tournament on Friday, Feb. 16 at Westminster High.

Local longboarders lead Team USA to gold at ISA World Longboard Surfing Championship in China

he United States national surf team is celebrating its first-ever team gold medal after running the table at the 2018 ISA World Longboard Surfing Championship at Riyue Bay in Wanning, China.

A lion’s share of the credit goes to local Orange County surfers. San Clemente’s Tory Gilkerson, who won the women’s division, and Dana Point’s Rachael Tilly led the charge in the competition’s Aloha Cup, and Kevin Skvarna from San Juan Capistrano came away with a copper medal in the men’s division.

“It was such an amazing experience,” said Gilkerson, who caught up with the Dana Point Times this week after returning home from China. “The team camaraderie was so much fun. It was my first ISA Longboard Championship, so it was all new to me. We were high-fiving, waving flags. It was definitely a team effort.”

The U.S. team was comprised of four surfers—the only one of them not from South Orange County was North Carolina’s Tony Silvagni. All four surfers got off to a hot start at the onset of the contest, blitzing their way through round after round.

“There were days our team was surfing 10 or 15 heats, it was pretty intense,” said

With the swell on the decline, the contest was on hold midway through the waiting period. Call it fate, but the timing couldn’t have been better. Gilkerson was hit by a stomach flu that laid her low for a couple of days.

“It was pretty rough, but the team rallied and took care of me. By the time the contest was back on, I was feeling pretty good,” Gilkerson continued.

By the time the final day rolled around, the Americans held a slim lead over the rest of the world. The Australian team only trailed the U.S. by 410 points and it was still very much anybody’s game. When Aussie ace Declan Wyton was knocked out of the contest, the door swung wide open for the U.S. Silvagni and Skvarna found themselves

in the same elimination heats three times throughout the contest, but by deftly applying team tactics, both were able to advance all the way to the final. They came away with bronze and copper medals, respectively, in the men’s division.

For the women, Tilly stumbled in the main event while Gilkerson kept marching forward. Reveling in the unique Chinese surf heat after heat, the San Onofre aficionado surfed in fine form during the event.

“It was so cool to be part of the U.S. longboard team winning their first gold medal,” said Gilkerson, quick to give credit to the rest of the squad.

“We were coached by longboard world champ Colin McPhillips, and he had so much insight and experience to share. I felt like I was learning something new all the time,” Gilkerson added. “And Greg Cruse (Surfing America CEO) showed up with a suitcase full of snacks and jars of peanut butter and jelly. He was making sandwiches and cheering everyone on. It was a really special experience.”

In the end, the U.S. came away with the gold while Peru finished second. Hawaii claimed the bronze and Brazil rounded things out with a copper medal. The Aussies slipped all the way down to sixth, finishing behind the U.K. All told, it was a good week of waves and relatively friendly competition in China, and with the 2020 Olympic Games in Japan only two short years away, things are definitely coming together for the international surfing community.

“ISA World Longboarding is back! What an amazing week!” the ISA’s Robert Fasulo said in a statement. “There is no doubt that Riyue Bay has delivered as an epic venue for world-class longboarding. The ISA’s vision is simple—we want to create a better world through surfing.” DP

very week, we feature an up-andcoming surfer who is celebrating some kind of accomplishment.

Maybe it’s a contest win, scoring on an exotic surf trip, or even successfully shaping a surfboard, but what sometimes gets overlooked is spotlighting the day-in and day-out dedication and hard work that leads to these successes. Case in point: San Clemente goofy-footer Max Beach.

Lately, Max has been in Hawaii, charging the North Shore scoring rides he’ll probably never forget. The North Shore is more or less surfing’s proving ground.

With waves like Pipeline, Sunset Beach and Waimea, the power of the breaks there is unrivaled, and learning to tame these beasts takes years of experience.

Rather than wait until he’s battling for rating points on the WSL’s Qualifying Series in a few years, Max has taken it upon himself to put in the time on “the rock” to better understand the waves and conditions. True to form, he notes that Pipeline has become his favorite wave in the world.

“There’s nothing better than getting barreled and having enough speed when you come out to do anything,” Max reveled.

Given Max’s passion and work ethic, don’t be surprised if you see more of his work on the North Shore in the years to come. DP
