Capistrano Beach Park Ravaged by Big Surf, High Tides THE LATEST: As arguably the largest swell of the summer season arrives on Southern California shores, Capistrano Beach Park continues to be ravaged by high surf and high tides. The park is currently closed as the parking lot is covered by more than six inches of rubble and sand. A large portion of the west side of the parking lot appears to be unearthed, surrounded by concrete roadway dividers.

As Dana Point Times reported, OC Parks recently announced that the fire pits at Capistrano Beach Park would be removed after being deemed not financially sustainable as well as a risk-of-injury to the public. The majority of the pits had already been removed before the large swell arrived on Monday, but two had been relocated to the north of the parking lot where there was more beachfront space. As of print deadline, those two fire pits remain intact and exposed.

WHAT’S NEXT: Currently closed, OC Parks expressed that the park could possibly be closed until Saturday morning.

Local Surfer Tim O’Connor Dies in Heavy Surf at Doheny State Beach THE LATEST: On July 24, in sizeable surf, Niguel Shores resident, husband and father of 13, Tim O’Connor, 68, was found unconscious in the water outside Doheny State Beach and later died.

Laguna Niguel resident James Pribram was on the scene at Doheny when O’Connor was found. A former professional surfer and certified lifesaver, Pribram immediately entered the water.

“I heard the screams, the sort of screams when you know something is really wrong,” Pribram said.

Pribram joined several other certified civilians and lifeguards who were already working to bring O’Connor to shore through the pounding surf.

reported California State Park lifeguards took over CPR and rescue efforts before taking him off the scene via ambulance.

“I want people to know he had the best of the best working there,” Pribram shared. “Some of the people there that day helping to get him out of the water were the finest waterman I know.”

Rick Erkeneff had surfed with O’Connor earlier that morning at Strands beach. He shared that O’Connor was an experienced world-traveling surfer, sharing memories of O’Connor taking off on waves that Erkeneff “wanted nothing to do with,” despite being decades older.

After spending the morning surfing the swell, occasionally being “cleaned up,” by large set waves, Erkeneff shared that when a perfect wave came late in the session, Erkeneff “hooted” O’Connor into the wave. After riding that wave to the beach, Erkeneff said that O’Connor turned and threw him a shaka before exiting the water.

It was the last time the two would see each other.

WHAT’S NEXT: “He was the best dad in the world,” O’Connor’s daughter Darshan told the Dana Point Times. “He loved God and he loved my mom until the day he died. He would do whatever it took to put food on the table for all of us and he always took the time to speak of the important things in life.”

She called him a family man at it’s finest.

“My dad ripped, I would like you to say that,” Darsan said through tears. “And I don’t believe the ocean took him. I believe it set him free.”

Community Center to Close for Renovation August 6 THE LATEST: The Dana Point Community Center will be closed from Aug. 6 through approximately Oct. 19 for previously scheduled renovations.

Some improvements have already been made. A new roof has been installed, and seven out of nine air conditioning units on the facility have been replaced.

“These changes alone represent a significant investment in the future of this facility,” director of general services Mike Rose said.

“The interior changes coming up during the closure will include an improved public service counter for our Community Services Department, new paint and flooring throughout the building, new energy efficient LED lighting throughout the building, new cabinets in the activity rooms, and a new multi-purpose dance floor in Room A. Our hope is that all of these changes will provide a fresh new look and feel to our Community Center.”

Visible improvements to be made are largely superficial such as paint, flooring and lighting and the changes that cannot be seen, including a new roof and HVAC equipment will make significant needed improvements to the facility.

“The most important aspect of this project is that the community see and feel that this Community Center is an important asset and a fixture that provides valuable resources and services to our community members of all ages,” Rose continued via email. “We hope that this makeover will provide a welcome improvement to the look and feel of the Community Center that our community can be proud of.”

THE LATEST: During the most recent Dana Point City Council meeting on July 17, City Manager Mark Denny revealed that OpenGov, a financial transparency portal designed to bring more visibility and openness to government operations, is now online.

This site provides residents the opportunity to view, filter and analyze the city’s revenue, expense and balance-sheet financial data. Information is available for the last five fiscal years, dating back to 2014-2015. You can also download the data (i.e. in Excel) for offline analysis.

WHAT’S NEXT: City staff has pre-designed five quick links on www.danapoint.org for what they felt were the most resourced public information.

Looking forward, in addition to financial information, OpenGov will include parameter measurement on budgets set by the City Council such as the Strategic Plan Update and documentation of performance markers for committees.

“Government finances are complicated,” said Assistant City Manager Mike Killebrew.

“I hope people come to us with questions.”

He called OpenGov very much a work in progress and still in the refining process.

Pavement Rehabilitation, Preservation Project Set for fall THE LATEST: During the City Council meeting on July 17, an arterial roadway resurfacing project to include pavement rehabilitation and preservation of arterial streets that warrant attention, was approved and a contract granted to Hardy and Harper Incorporated for more than 3.5 million dollars.

Pavement “rehabilitation” is officially defined as: minor dig-outs of failed pavement sections followed by asphalt overlay.

DHHS Student Brings Her Aloha to South Coast Water District Every year, South Coast Water District awards a scholarship to a high school student who lives in the District’s service area. For 2018, the scholarship was a video contest. The contest challenged students to create a video that educates people about the value of water.

This year’s winner was Alanni Perman with her video “Somewhere over Orange County” a fresh twist on Israel “Iz” Kamakawiwoioles’ song rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow/ What a Wonderful World.”

Alanni, a Dana Point Resident, is a recent graduate of Dana Hills High School.

Incumbents Pull Nomination Papers, Districts Even for Nominees The districts are now even as Dana Point City Council 2018 election is underway. Mayor Pro-Tem Joe Muller and Mayor Richard A. Viczorek have pulled their nomination papers.

So far, the residents who have pulled papers are Joseph Jager and Mayor protem Joe Muller for District 1, Mark McGinn and Mayor Richard A. Viczorek for District 2 as well as Jamey Federico and Charles Payne for District 3. Candidates must pull nomination papers and circulate them to obtain enough signatures before officially filing. More candidates are likely to pull papers as the weeks go on.

The deadline to pull nomination papers is Aug. 10, the same deadline to file a ballot initiative with the city. The Dana Point Times will update the list of candidates who pull nomination papers online at www. danapointtimes.com under the headline “City Council Candidates Running” as of the latest date available. Fiscal Committees in State Senate and Assembly Will Determine Fates of SB 834 and AB 1775 A pair of bills seeking to prevent new offshore drilling activities off the California coast are currently being reviewed by the Appropriations Committees in both houses; each bill made it out of its respective committee in the State Senate and Assembly.

Bill 1775 (AB 1775) both challenge federal efforts to pursue new offshore drilling opportunities off the California coast. Both bills, if approved by state legislators and signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown, would continue California’s efforts to challenge Pres. Donald J. Trump’s environmental policies.

The city of Dana Point is listed as an official supporter of both bills.

The Assembly’s Natural Resources Committee approved SB 834 by a 7-3 vote on June 25, allowing it to move forward to the lower house’s Appropriations Committee one day later. SB 834 made it out of the State Senate by a 24-8 vote (7 no-shows) on May 30.

AB 1775, meanwhile, made it out of the State Senate’s Natural Resources and Water Committee on June 26 (7-2 vote), setting it up to be in the upper house’s Appropriations Committee. Assembly members approved this proposal on May 30; the vote was 45-24 with 9 no-shows.

Both bills, which mirror each other, propose to prohibit oil and gas exploration on state lands associated with Outer Continental Shelf leases. State Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson, D-Santa Barbara, and Assembly member Al Muratsuchi, D-Torrance, introduced their respective bills in response to Trump’s plan to expand offshore oil and gas drilling opportunities in federal waters.

Legislators passed the California Coastal Sanctuary Act in 1994; the act prohibited (with exceptions) new oil and gas leases in state coastal waters.

The Trump Administration announced in January it would plan to lift a moratorium on oil and gas exploration set by his predecessor, Pres. Barack Obama. Trump’s policy direction, according to the most recent legislative analysis of SB 834, would open up 90 percent of federal waters to new drilling leases.

A recent poll cited by legislative analysts showed 69 percent of Californians “opposed drilling off the California Coast;” the poll was conducted by the Public Policy Institute of California.

Western States Petroleum Association, or WSPA, registered its opposition to AB 1775.

The association stated the bill actually takes authority away from the State Lands Commission on tidelands leases; the commission

already has the power to deny oil and gas leases on state lands under its jurisdiction, according to WSPA’s stated position.

Other organizations opposed to AB 1775 include California Chamber of Commerce, Orange County Business Council, Oxnard Chamber of Commerce, San Gabriel Valley Economic Partnership and Wilmington Chamber of Commerce. WSPA is the only listed opposition on the Assembly’s Natural Resources Committee analysis of SB 834.

Coastal Animal Services Authority (CASA) Wins Risk Management Award Kim Colodenko, general manager of Coastal Animal Services Authority (CASA), announced on July 24 that her organization won Best Overall Performance for non-municipal agencies for the Workers’ Compensation Program in the 2018 Risk Management Awards, presented by the California Joint Powers Insurance Authority (“Authority”), one of the largest municipal self-insurance pools in California.

The Risk Management Awards highlight dedicated efforts and achievements in risk management, recognizing Authority members that have demonstrated the best overall performance in the Liability Program and the Workers’ Compensation Program. To select the winners, Authority staff evaluated various factors that reflect an organization’s risk management efforts, including the cost of claims and their progress towards completing action plan items.

CASA was formed in 1996 and is governed by a joint powers authority and oversees the cities of Dana Point and San Clemente in both animal sheltering and animal control services.

The award-winners were honored at the authority’s board of directors meeting on July 18 at the authority’s La Palma campus.

Letters to the Editor WHY I AM RUNNING FOR CITY COUNCIL IN DANA POINT’S DISTRICT 3 CHARLES PAYNE, Dana Point

I’m Charles Payne, and I’m running for City Council in Dana Point’s District 3.

I’m not a politician. But I love Dana Point.

I’m a 20-year law enforcement veteran, who worked his way through law school and became an attorney and local business owner. As a police lieutenant and bureau commander, I’ve seen the benefits firsthand when residents team up with local government and public safety personnel. I understand the value of hard work and the rewards of serving my community.

My wife and I are probably a lot like you. We’ve worked hard to afford a home in our amazing beach community and probably like you, we’re concerned about the things that threaten our quiet beach community and our small-town way of life: Things like rising crime, homelessness, unlicensed group homes and short-term rentals, as well as less obvious issues, like unbridled over-development and runaway deficit spending. Those problems aren’t insurmountable. They’re not beyond common-sense solutions.

MORE TO SONGS THAN MEETS THE EYE MIKE RUSSELL, San Clemente

Jake Howard’s report in the July 19-25 edition of the Dana Point Times on his tour of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station was both interesting and balanced. Nevertheless, some additional information may be helpful to your readers.

Regarding the seawall, it was designed and built to protect the Unit 1 reactor, which operated from 1967 through 1992 against a tsunami caused by the maximum credible offshore earthquake and the maximum credible storm surge, if these events occurred at the same time.

Check with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, who prepared a safety evalua-

tion report before issuing an operating license.

Regarding transferring used nuclear fuel from wet storage to dry storage, that project is scheduled to be completed next year. Check with Dr. David G. Victor (University of California, San Diego) who is the chairman of the San Onofre Community Engagement Panel.

Regarding the permanent home for used nuclear fuel, a deep geological repository has already been built in Yucca Mountain near the Nevada Nuclear Test Site. Only political gridlock in Washington, D.C. prevents used nuclear fuel from being shipped out of our backyards.

SOLUTIONS TO TRAFFIC CAN BE ACHIEVED WITHOUT CHARGING THROUGH SAN CLEMENTE JIM COSHLAND, San Clemente

For my San Clemente friends: take a little drive. Check out the Avenida La Pata and Ortega Highway area. There are thousands of new homes. Drive up San Antonio Parkway to Rancho Santa Margarita. Another groups of thousands of homes. Ladera Ranch, more thousands. Go up to Orange and down to Foothill Ranch and the Trabuco Canyon area. Does anyone think that the huge number of cars going south on the I-5 through San Clemente are all from the Los Angeles area?

When the Orange County folks mentioned above decide to go south, how do they get there? Answer: I-5, of course. To minimize jam time, shortcuts down La Pata and through San Clemente are suggested by apps such as Waze. Avenidas Pico and Presidio become impacted as well as many smaller streets.

It will only get worse as time goes by and those thousands of new homes become occupied. San Clemente has been thrown under the bus by being on the outside when the TCA signed a protective agreement with an environmental coalition, making it only consider routes through San Clemente and not around it.

Monumental traffic will go through San Clemente in the future without a way to divert it.

The existing proposed routes through San Clemente are the result of that agreement. That agreement has to be voided through the courts as it settled a longstanding lawsuit.

When that is done, the correct routing around the city can be made.

There is a simple route in which the toll road (or better, a free road) could continue south from Oso, crossing Ortega Highway around the eastern limits of San Clemente, continuing south and connecting to I-5, south of San Clemente city limits. Of course, there will be backups Page 5

on the two highways—there always will be—but there is no reason for city streets to be congested, as there’s no advantage to anyone.

A highway bypassing San Clemente is the only logical choice. I’m an old guy, been here for more than 40 years.

It will not impact me. I urge everyone to observe, gather facts and think for yourselves and to not be led around by shortsighted special interests.

SHOWING HUMANITY TO OUR HOMELESS JANE MURGO, Dana Point

I was so happy to read the cover story, “Reaching Out to Meet Halfway,” in the July 20 edition of the Dana Point Times.

Sure, Dana Point is seeing an increase in homelessness like most all of Southern California, but it was refreshing to see a bit of humanity on the streets of Dana Point.

Not all sober living home patients are criminals, not all alcoholics are dangerous and nasty and not all chronically homeless are refusing resources.

I know some of them are and act that way, but, in my opinion, shouldn’t we take that chance? I believe there are two steps. We need to get those that are currently homeless back on their feet, or the help they need because as many people have expressed, and I believe homeless communities attract more homeless with easier access to things like drugs that encourage continuance of their homeless experience.

Also, and not that the small city of Dana Point can fix this, but where is the discussion as to the actual cause of the homelessness? We can deal with the symptoms but are focused on fixing the disease.

There is a lot of discussion of “quality of life issues,” but where is the discussion about what tangible impacts issues such as lack of affordable housing and increased youth opioid abuse are having on increasing homeless?

We can blame it on sober living homes all we want, but remember, as the author stated, the majority of our homeless are actually region/local.

uch like how Richard Linklater showed us what it was like to grow up in the mid2000s with Boyhood (2014), comedian Bo Burnham takes a break from his stand-up gigs to give us a representation of childhood in the mid-2010s with Eighth Grade. But Burnham’s coming-of-age feature doesn’t take place over a whole decade or use the slightly pretentious method of filming for literally 12 years. It takes place in just one week, the final week of eighth grade.

Thirteen-year-old Kayla Day (Elsie Fisher) lives in the New York suburbs and is an average tween in the early 21st century. She has more online followers than friends she socializes with outside, and she hosts her own YouTube advice vlog. It’s the last week of eighth grade, but she doesn’t feel any more mature or confident than she did back in sixth grade. Within the next few days, Elsie goes to a birthday party for one of the popular girls in school (Catherine Oliviere), meets some older high school friends and tries not to get embarrassed by her dad (Josh Hamilton).

Eighth Grade features completely unknown actors and feels even more like a faux-documentary than Boyhood did. Fisher is cast perfectly, as she looks exactly like your ordinary middle-schooler, with zits and all. It would be easy to just say her performance is good because she’s “playing herself,” but it takes genuine talent to carry the two dramatic scenes near the end. For some, Burnham’s piece might hit too close to home, but it is an authentic account of the most awkward years in life. DP

n a foreword to Jim Kempton’s new book, First We Surf Then We Eat, famed surfer/chef Raphael Lunetta, the head chef and proprietor of Lunetta restaurant in Santa Monica, reflects on the experience of communing over a meal and the bond that experience brings.

“When you’re surfing,” Lunetta said, “you’re always building strong personal connections. I’ve learned that the best way to nurture those connections is through a wonderful meal.”

In First We Surf Then We Eat, Kempton aims to pass along the innumerable connections he has formed through a lifetime of surfing, cooking and writing. The editor and former publisher of SURFER Magazine as well as director of the Quiksilver Crossing Project, a boat that searched the world for the best surf breaks, the San Clemente resident currently serves as the president of the California Surf Museum and expressed that in its own way, his new book is about recording his own history.

“I hope people see this as an opportunity for good recipes that are enriched by the stories that come with them,” Kempton said. “It’s like reading a book by your favorite author and knowing the real-life stories connecting them to what you are taking in. It makes it so much richer.”

Kempton certainly has a few stories to tell, and a dish to accompany every one.

First We Surf Then We Eat features more than 75 recipes from across the globe, many with accompanying stories from Kempton’s travels to that region.

True to surfer form, Kempton said the unifying theme across all the recipes is relative simplicity, a skill he learned during his time manning the Quiksilver Crossing Project, where world-class chefs catered to traveling surfers and more.

“I learned so much there, seeing these chefs making delicious and exotic meals without 14 pans and all of the bells and whistles,” Kempton recalled. “Most of the

recipes in First We Surf Then We Eat can be made on hibachi, a weber grill, or stuck on a stick over a fire.”

“Most of the stories I had catalogued.

I’ve been writing my whole life. The recipes proved to be the more difficult part,” Kempton shared. “Written on the back of envelopes, scratched on the back of old dirty notebooks. Recipes need to be standardized, you can’t just say ‘throw in the onions,’ you need to say how and for how long.”

Kempton said that throughout the book’s stories and recipes, a cultural connection to the ocean and coastal culture is evident.

“This book is unique in that it is a crossover of two very similar worlds. As a book of surf stories, it would probably only successfully reach the small global surf community. Purely as a cookbook, it probably gets lost in the sea of cookbooks out there. But as both, as a hybrid, it combines two worlds and that combination has been getting some great feedback.”

For Kempton, First We Surf Then We Eat is metaphorical to a musical performance.

“Surfers are like jazz musicians. There is a lot of freestyle, we travel in small packs, and generally stay below the radar,” Kempton said. Jazz musicians are in their dim-lit clubs, out of the spotlight. The big hairbands played the arenas. Surfers, and chefs, we don’t ever want to do that, but sometimes, occasionally, a Miles Davis ‘Bitches Brew,’ or the like, is born, and something is brought from the back room of the jazz club a little closer to the big stage.”

t 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 28, Skie Bender, an Education Outreach Specialist from Wolf Haven International, will be the featured guest speaker at the Doheny State Beach campfire program.

Bender has been a staff member at the nonprofit wolf sanctuary in Washington since 2006. Wolf Haven International largely focuses on wolves, but also houses a couple of coyotes.

Coyote sightings have been reported throughout Dana Point, but residents are claiming (and sharing photo and video of) a dramatic increase in Capistrano Beach.

Dana Point Times reached out to speak with Bender about how this could be happening, what to do, and what her program, “Wolves, Coyotes and Wildlife Education,” will include.

DPT: What is your personal and professional background with canids?

SB: I’ve always been deeply intrigued by Dana Point Times July 27-August 2, 2018

canids. There is no ‘wolf school’, I have no ‘wolf degree’, I simply started volunteering at Wolf Haven in 2004. I was hired on as a staff member in 2006 and really just learned a lot in the sanctuary by being still and quiet, watching, smelling and listening; observing the wolves body language, postures, interactions, tonal vocalizations, signs of stress and calmness. I’m a huge advocate for experiential learning.

DPT: Can you explain your educational program – and how it relates to the South Orange County residents?

SB: The “Wolves, Coyotes and Wildlife Education” program takes a close look at the differences and similarities between wolf and coyote biology, behavior, social structure, historical and current ranges, and ecosystem roles. We also look at how our domesticated dogs compare and contrast with these wild canids. The program is specific to South Orange County residents because of the rapid development and human population growth in recent years in South County has driven coyotes out of their homes. Coyotes, though technically a carnivore, are habitat generalists, are extremely adaptable opportunists and very smart, so that they learn to survive in urban environments.

DPT: In terms of urbanization/human interaction, can you compare wolf and coyote behavior?

SB: Generally speaking, human confrontations with wolves are pretty rare in an urban environment because wolves live in forested habitats and retain a fear of

is hard-wired in their DNA. Look at our domesticated canids - our dogs - what do they love to do? Chase balls! So first and foremost, if you encounter a wolf or a coyote in any environment (wild or urban) stand still, strong and calm. Have a confident “predatory” posture, by making yourself large.

Wave your arms, yell at the animals. Show them you are a top predator and you are not afraid. Focusing on coyotes in an urban environment, we call it hazing. We must re-instill fear back into these habituated animals. Wild animals are born with a fear of humans, but rapidly lose that fear once we deliberately or inadvertently feed them.

We also must be proactive about maintain-

ing an undesirable home for coyotes i.e. no water source, no food source.

DPT: Can you give some of the reasons that wolves and coyotes may be driven to urban environments. What can people do personally, or as social groups to manage this?

SB: Coyotes can be driven to urban envi-

ronments due to habitat loss, droughts, food source. Again, though they are biologically carnivores. They are highly adaptable habitat generalists.

People can manage coyote problems in their communities by being proactive: securing meat and dairy compost, fencing off animal enclosures, feeding and watering pets indoors, keeping cats and small dogs indoors when not supervised, keeping yards free from thick brush, enclose porches and decks, eliminating fallen fruit and standing water, teaching your children to be still and yell (get off their bike, skateboard) and remember predators chase things that run!

This does not mean the coyote wants to eat you, it is simply curious about the chase.

Run of Fire Former Olympic torch relay organizer looks to celebrate run’s history in Dana Point

uly 26, 1984.

Dana Point is still five years away from becoming an incorporated city, but the Orange County harbor town is part of the path to the greatest of international events.

Thursday marked the 34th anniversary of the Olympic torch relay, as part of its 9,000-mile journey through the United States, passing through Dana Point on the way to the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles.

The occasion was recognized only by the relay’s organizer, Dick Sargeant, sitting at a coffee shop on Pacific Coast Highway with his personal 1984 torch in hand.

Sargeant, 84, organized the original relay, which zig-zagged across the United States from New York to Atlanta to Chicago to Houston to Seattle to San Diego to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

He also received the Olympic flame in Olympia, Greece and acted as the flame’s steward for the journey.

With the 34th anniversary celebration limited to open mouths, excited faces and pictures with the torch from passersby, Sargeant is on a mission for the coral or jade anniversary of 35 years to organize a community run to recreate and celebrate Dana Point’s moment in history.

“There are two objectives,” Sargeant said. “Raise a little bit of money (for charity), and the second is to expose Dana Point to the rest of the community.”

Sargeant is a member of the Niguel Shores men’s club, where he gave a talk and met Dana Point Mayor Pro Tem Joe Muller. This encouraged Sargeant to speak at the latest City Council meeting at which Sergeant tried to drum up support for the potential event.

“The biggest step right now is trying to get the city to understand that there’s some significance,” Sargeant said. “I would say, if you just do it next year for the 35th anniversary, you’re crazy. It should be an event in Dana Point every year on the 26th of July. Then if you’re going to extend that, being the initiator of the concept, we go to everybody that’s on this route; we go to Albuquerque, and let’s see what they think.”

what other events could be linked up to the celebration, how local businesses could become involved and just about every bit of how to run the entire thing.

Sargeant has the know-how and experience from his time organizing the 1984 torch relay.

He grew up in Long Beach, and after time in the Army to earn his G.I. bill, he went to college at Long Beach City College and onto San Jose State University.

While in a fraternity at San Jose State, Sargeant met Pete Ueberroth. Ueberroth would go on to 20 years in the travel industry before becoming the organizer for the 1984 Olympics and later the commissioner of Major League Baseball.

After moving to Hawaii and four years of working on sailboats in Tahiti, Sargeant went into business with Ueberroth, who asked Sargeant to join him in organizing the Olympics.

“Pete said, ‘I don’t know what I’m doing, but you don’t either, so let’s learn together,’” Sargeant said.

Starting with just $173, Ueberroth,

Sargeant and the rest of the organizing committee went on to earn a surplus of a quarter of a million dollars that was donated to the Special Olympics.

“We did reasonably well,” Sargeant said.

“No taxpayers’ money involved.”

Sargeant worked on several projects for the committee, chief among them being the torch relay. His original idea was to fly the torch into San Francisco and have a six-day relay down California. However, in the meeting, it was a unanimous vote to run it across the United States, and it was then up to Sargeant to get it to work. “’Sargeant, since you seem to know more about it than any of us, you’re running it,’” he recalled being told.

After organizing sponsorships from GMC and AT&T as well as finalizing the route, negotiating with cities and gathering an army of volunteers from coast to coast, the relay ran from May 8 in New York to July 28, 1984 at the Coliseum with 3,636 torchbearers, including a kilometer stretch in Colorado by Sargeant.

through Orange County along PCH through Dana Point on its way to Long Beach.

The Olympic torch returned to Dana Point in a southbound route for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta and back again for another northbound route for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

Sargeant’s concept would be the 1984 and 2002 routes. His design would begin at the bridge over PCH on the south end of town with the terminus around Salt Creek Beach at the north end.

The spark for the event would be the anniversary of the torch relay, but the enduring flame for Sargeant’s idea would be a celebration and promotion of Dana Point.

“Dana Point is looking to be somebody,” Sargeant said. “There’s sports history in Dana Point.”

Open Intrigue U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach offers local interest for San Clemente and Dana Point surfers

t’s that time again. The U.S. Open of Surfing is here. Kicking off in Huntington Beach this Saturday, July 28, 2018’s incarnation of the “biggest show in surf” has a little something for everyone.

Getting the party started right, San Clemente’s Pat, Dane and Tanner Gudauskas will host their Stoke-O-Rama kids surf contest on Saturday on the south side of the iconic Huntington Beach Pier. Open only to Huntington Beach residents, it’s a precursor to the San Clemente Stoke-O-Rama the brothers are planning for T-Street this September and should be an epic day for the local groms. A fun, irreverent opportunity for kids to get in the water, hang with a few of their heroes and get stoked, it’s a fitting way to get the Open underway.

The Gudauskas boys will also premiere their new documentary film titled Can’t Steal Our Vibe. Detailing their stunning surfboard drive that saw beach communities around the U.S. contribute more than 750 boards to kids in need in Africa, it’s a behind-the-scenes look at how transformative the endeavor has been. The film will screen at the U.S. Open Amphitheater at 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 28, and again on Tuesday, July 31.

brothers and I,” Pat said. “As we grew older in professional surfing, it became apparent to us that we had the platform and ability to help other people. It’s so important to us to represent surfing in a way that promotes positivity and community. To have this influence on (surfing’s) future is so empowering, and to see this surf passion come to life on all levels at the U.S. Open is exactly what makes the event so unique.”

Unfortunately, while we’re getting pounded by a healthy south swell this week, Surfline’s long-range surf forecast for the Open is calling for surf in the knee- to waisthigh range throughout the contest. There’s potential for a small uptick in south swell for the last three days, but it’s not going to be firing by any stretch of the imagination.

The men’s event is considered a Qualifying Series contest, but for the women there are world title-implications. The women’s contest is the seventh stop on the Championship Tour. Currently, Australian Stephanie Gilmore leads the race and is gunning for a record-tying seventh world title. Hot on her heels is Santa Barbara’s Lakey Peterson, who has ambitions of becoming the first Californian to win a world title since Tom Curren back in 1990.

Interestingly, the Open is one of the contests that launched Curren’s competitive career in the early ’80s.

This year also marks the first-ever women’s Vans Duct Tape Invitational.

13-year-old frother has been participating in the San Clemente Junior Lifeguard program this summer, and she’s no slouch on a skateboard either.

And as much as she’d like to, young Downer can’t spend every waking moment on the sand or in the water. She’s also a member of the San Clemente Surf Soccer Club and helped them win the Manchester Cup over Memorial Day Weekend. And when she’s not on the pitch, you may find her swinging her clubs on the golf course or draining threes on the basketball court.

Well, from what we can tell, Downer’s definitely well-balanced—and it doesn’t look like she’s going to stop moving anytime soon. DP

including South Orange County’s Tory Gilkerson and Karina Rozunko.

“There are so many young girls now who surf so incredibly well,” Rozunko told SURFER Magazine earlier this year.

“They’re so excited about it, and I feel like they have such a great future ahead of them, and I want to help them however I can…I want to be that positive influence on the next generation.”

And when it comes to inspiring generations, San Clemente’s Herbie Fletcher will be one of three surfers honored at the annual Surfers’ Hall of Fame in front of Huntington Surf and Sport. He’ll join Hawaiian surfer/shaper/coach/mentor Ben Aipa and Huntington all-star Brett Simpson at the induction ceremony on Friday, Aug. 3, at 9 a.m.

Herbie is responsible for a number of advancements in the sport of surfing, including using a jet ski in massive Hawaiian waves, launching the first surfboard traction company, AstroDeck, as well as producing the seminal Wave Warriors video series. His sons, Christian and Nathan, are among two of the most progressive innovators the sport has ever had the privilege of knowing.

“As a husband and soulmate, I knew the moment I met him on the beach at Makaha when I was 13, he had the greatest imagination. It hasn’t been easy living a life going against the grain, it’s been fantastic,” said Herbie’s wife Dibi, who is the daughter of surf industry icon Walter Hoffman and sister to two-time World Champion Joyce Hoffman.
