CPUC Approves SONGS Settlement; Parties Have Days to Respond

THE LATEST: Announced in early 2017, the City of Dana Point and Zephyr, the developer of South Cove, are creating two new public plazas which will pay homage to Dana Point’s history and the region’s vibrant surfing culture.

“What remains unique to these plazas, unlike most public spaces comprised of grass, playgrounds and seating areas, is that the new parks will feature art pieces, exhibits and large-scale installations,” said Kelly Rendeers, Dana Point Economic Development Manager. “These are complex exhibits and complicated art pieces, but we are excited about the progress made to date.”

The largest and most complicated art piece is the Hobie memorial, which will include a life-size Hobie Alter sailing a full scale Hobie Cat, all depicted in bronze.

The most visible structure that was recently erected is the PCH tower. The PCH tower echoes the design of Dana Point’s Richfield Tower and features a replica beacon at the top. Dana Point’s Richfield Tower stood on Pacific Coast Highway at what is today the ARCO gas station. The original tower was taken down to widen Pacific Coast Highway.

Other items completed in the park include the installation of pavers, laid in an alternating wave pattern, lighting and landscaping.

USGS: Rising Sea Levels Threaten California Coastal Bluffs THE LATEST: The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) recently published a study that shows significant erosion to California’s coasts could be more dramatic than previously thought.

According to an announcement by the USGS, the study “combined several computer models for the first time to forecast cliff erosion along the Southern California coast.”

rise from 1 and a half feet to more than 6 and a half feet by the year 2100. The study analysis said that bluff tops for about 300 miles of the coast in Southern California could lose 62 to 135 feet by that time and much more in certain areas.

Coastal cliff erosion rates vary depending on sea level rise, wave energy, coastal slope, beach width and height, and rock strength, the study analysis stated.

The study analysis stated that without the bluffs to deposit sand from eroding cliffs, beaches in Southern California “may not survive the rising sea levels” and “blufftop development may not withstand the estimated 62 to 135 feet of cliff recession.”

“Sea cliff retreat is a serious hazard,” said Patrick Limber, the USGS research geologist and lead author of the study.

“Unlike beaches, cliffs can be stable for decades between large landslides that remove several feet of bluff top.”

The study is part of a USGS effort to forecast climate change effects of the Southern California coast using the Coastal Storm Modeling System, the analysis stated.

WHAT’S NEXT: South Orange County appears to be in the medium to high level of concern, whereas areas of Ventura and Los Angeles coastlines were designated in very high and extreme concern areas.

Election Update: Seven Candidates Have Pulled Papers as Deadline Looms THE LATEST: The Dana Point City Council 2018 election is underway, and seven candidates in three districts have pulled nomination papers.

So far, the residents who have pulled papers are current incumbent Mayor pro-tem

Joe Muller, Joseph Jager and Amy Foell for District 1, current incumbent Mayor Richard Viczorek, and Mark McGinn for District 2 and Jamey Federico and Charles Payne for District 3. Candidates must pull nomination papers and circulate them to obtain enough signatures before officially filing. More candidates are likely to pull papers as the deadline approaches.

Update: Harbor Shuttle to Link to Trolley THE LATEST: The City of Dana Point recently confirmed slight changes to the Dana Point Harbor Shuttle route. The changes are intended to hasten the trip for residents and visitors leaving the Dana Point Harbor to head north. As the Dana Point Harbor Shuttle exits the Dana Wharf area of the Harbor, it will now climb Golden Lantern before heading north and stopping at Hobie Surf Shop (also Dana Point Trolley stop 20.) The Harbor Shuttle will then turn around at La Plaza Park and descend west down Golden Lantern, where it will stop at new location (stop F) outside Jimmy’s Famous American Tavern. With this link, residents will no longer have to head south and circle Capistrano Beach before returning north towards stop 20.

THE LATEST: The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) announced on Thursday, July 26, that it had approved the reopened settlement agreement regarding the shutdown and decommissioning of San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS).

The settlement was re-opened in 2016, after it was found in 2015 that then-CPUC President Michael Peevey and then-Southern California Edison (SCE) vice president Stephen Pickett had met in Warsaw, Poland and struck a deal on the payment of the project, which was found to violate certain ethical procedures of the CPUC. SCE is the majority owner of SONGS. Lawsuits were filed by ratepayer advocacy groups to reconsider how much people who used the power should pay.

On May 9, 2016, the CPUC re-opened the record of a SONGS settlement agreement it approved in November 2014 following the “premature shutdown” of the plant after a steam generator tube leak in 2012.

The settling parties proposed in January that customers of SCE and San Diego Gas & Electric, a co-owner of San Onofre, no longer pay for the $775 million in San Onofrerelated investments that had not been recovered by the utilities. SCE and SDG&E have already provided more than $2 billion in customer savings under a prior settlement approved by the commission in 2014.

Ray Lutz, the executive director of Citizens Oversight Projects, Inc. (COPS), said his organization litigated over the specific dates and values that they saw to be fair for the public.,” said Lutz. “It comes down to when are we going to stop paying (SONGS)?”

Charles Langley, the executive director of Public Watchdogs, said the settlement didn’t go far enough to bring equity to ratepayers who were on the hook for about $3.4 billion of the $5.6 billion in decommissioning costs.

“What we are seeing is a complete failure of our regulators to enforce the law,” Langley said in a statement. “This settlement is the official approval of a criminal conspiracy involving fraud upon the court that was hatched in a hotel room in Warsaw, Poland.”

San Clemente Nonprofit Looks to Help Children with Special Needs Kahuna Cares Foundation was recently formed as a nonprofit that aims to help people with special needs, a press release from the foundation stated. The priority of Kahuna Cares Foundation is to help raise money for organizations and individuals who benefit and enhance the lives of children, teens and adults with special needs.

Co-founder Jennifer Tracy, daughter of surfer and writer Terry “Tubesteak” Tracy, said she wants to “carry on her father’s legacy of love by creating this charity in his memory and to continue her lifelong work and love for those with special needs.”

Jennifer teamed up with friend and CoFounder, Veronica Hoggatt, to make Kahuna Cares Foundation a reality.

A lifelong San Clemente resident, Veronica Hoggatt is a parent to a young man with autism. Veronica is an activist in the special-needs community who “brings her passion for helping her son to all those with special needs as well as their families.”

Kahuna Cares Foundation raises money through events and fundraising efforts.

ust off 4th St. in South Laguna Beach near Mission Hospital there is a house that appears to be as the others; with the exception of a large electric crane in the backyard.

Entering the backyard of this inconspicuous “house,” which is actually South Coast Water District (SCWD) base of operations, it is revealed that the crane is there to drop an approximately 8 feet by 8 feet octagon-shaped metal cage carrying human cargo into the vertical shaft below.

Dana Point Times joined Joe McDivitt, Chief Operating Officer of South Coast Water District, David Neil and Kevin Kilby of Parsons, the project management company in charge of the recently completed Phase I of the Tunnel Sewer Stabilization and Pipeline Replacement which included a change order for an additional 311 feet of

tunnel work in the southernly direction.

It is the end of the first phase of a fiveyear $100 million tunnel project in South Laguna Beach.

Phase I construction began in March of 2016 and included the creation of a new access shaft (104 feet deep and 20 feet in diameter) and a new access tunnel under Pacific Coast Highway from the shaft to the existing sewer tunnel (approximately 340 feet long) including the intersection.

The contractor Drill Tech stabilized and

enlarged approximately 611 feet of the existing sewer tunnel, which included the change order work. Phase I work was completed significantly ahead of time in February 2018. To keep construction progressing during the bid process and award for Phase II, SCWD awarded a change order to stabilize an additional 311 ft. of the tunnel.

San Clemente alum earns win, first hit in MLB debut It’s a day young ballplayers across the country dream of their entire lives: making your major league debut.

The experience didn’t start all so smoothly for San Clemente High School alum Kolby Allard. However, through a delay, wet conditions and some early hits against, Allard picked up his first major league win and first big league hit in his MLB debut for the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday, July 31 in Atlanta.

According to Austin Riley, Allard’s teammate with the AAA Gwinnett Stripers, Allard got the Braves phone call while he was playing a game of Fortnite. Not the most romantic story, but it’s still “the call.”

“It was funny,” Allard said. “I was supposed to pitch on Sunday (for Gwinnett).

Late Saturday night, I got the call and was going to be on hold until Tuesday. It wasn’t a for sure thing. Then on Monday, I was told it was official.”

Then on Tuesday, July 31, the rain arrived and delayed his start on the mound by an hour and a half.

“In the big leagues, you’re going to hang on for as long as it takes. It was clearing up as we warmed up, but right as I got in the dugout, it started coming down heavier.”

Finally, the moment came. A little over three years since he last stepped off the mound at San Clemente High School,

Allard stepped onto a major league mound in a major league uniform to take on major league competition. Allard had advanced a level each year of his pro baseball career to reach an MLB game.

“It’s been a quick turnaround,” Allard said of his rise. “Just the people in my life, coaches in the past. Coaching from back Page 6

Point and homes along the west side of coast highway at Three Arch Bay and in South Laguna. It is buried approximately 50 feet beneath the bluff from Three Arch Bay to Aliso Beach. The tunnel, located 20 to 30 feet from the edge of the cliffs, and underneath multi-million dollar homes, could potentially have a pipeline break that could take 36 hours or longer to control and allow over 800,000 gallons of sewage to flow into a federally protected marine life habitat. This tunnel project ensures structural and environmental protection by replacing the entirety of the aging Techlite piping with an entirely new pipe and tunnel built on a concrete encasement directly on top of the existing tunnel. Built in 1954, the tunnel became an innovative engineering model because it relies solely on gravity flow, which eliminates costly and unsightly infrastructure, including unnecessary lift stations and several thousand feet of sewer mains.

SCWD spent over $500,000 in site improvements in response to public concerns including a sliding gate and utilization of an electric crane instead of diesel. An electric crane was used to avoid any possible health effects that could be caused by prolonged use of a diesel crane.

when I was 10, the whole coaching staff I grew up with. They always had a big part in steering me and staying mature with things.”

Allard had finally reached his moment, but he didn’t let the enormity of it overwhelm him.

“I’m a super competitive dude,” Allard said. “I was more locked in to win that game. We’re a half game out (in the NL East). Everyone was giving me a hard time about soaking it in, but once that first pitch was in, it was game on.”

Allard allowed two hits on his first four pitches, but he wasn’t rattled. Allard induced an inning-ending double play to clear the danger, and the Braves went on to provide plenty of run support in an 11-6 win over the Miami Marlins.

Allard threw 81 pitches over five innings to earn the victory and allowed four earned runs on nine hits with one strikeout. He was also perfect at the plate as well. Allard picked up his first major league hit, finished 1-for-1, reached base twice and laid down two strong sacrifice bunts.

For his immediate future, Allard figures to head back to Gwinnett, but he says he’s now on call.

“Whenever they need a guy, I’ll be ready for them when called upon,” Allard said.

The City of Dana Point recently added a “Report to DP” app for smart phones.

I added the app to my phone. I am a dog owner/walker in the Capo Beach area.

While walking past Pines Park there was a tree hanging over the sidewalk that folks had to walk around to get past. I opened up the new “Report to DP” app on my phone, took a photo and filled out the info and requested the tree be trimmed. I received a reply within the day. The tree was trimmed two days later. Kudos to the City of Dana Point for making it so easy to report maintenance problems. The employee that contacted me via email was Jeff. Thank you so much for the wonderful article from the expert on coyotes, Skie Bender. I volunteer at the San Clemente/ Dana Point Animal Shelter, mostly answering the phone in the office. All too often, sometimes four or five times a day, people call in who allow their cats (mostly cats, but sometimes dogs) to roam freely under the mistaken belief that the outside is safe.

It’s not. They call, crying and hoping that their missing cat will somehow show up at the shelter. Sometimes the animal slips out when a door is left ajar. We take all the information on the missing cat or dog and tell them that we will put all the information in our computer and if we get any information on the missing animal we will contact them. I also ask them to please let us know if the cat shows up so that we can remove the information from our system.

We seldom get that call. I’ve been volunteering at the shelter for many years and taken hundreds, if not thousands of these calls and I know that very few of these cats are “lost” or just “missing.” Sometimes the call is from a child. I would never mention the word coyote to them, because they are in great distress and it would only hurt, not help. So I’m taking this opportunity to make people of our community aware that we have coyotes. Lots of them.

You not seeing them only attests to their smarts. All this land that we live on used to be their territory so they are starving and unable to reproduce and care for their offspring. By letting cats out we are feeding the coyotes and bringing them into our community. Please keep your cats inside

I will support neighborhood watch programs and adopt a community policing approach. I will reestablish the citizen-run Financial Review Committee to return Dana Point’s finances back to surplus. Dana Point deserves a bi-partisan city council working together so that generations of residents can enjoy our legacy of beautification and revitalization.

TIME TO GET SERIOUS ABOUT THE TOLL ROADS JENNIFER NICHOLSON GELLER, San Clemente

If you’re not outraged by the future extension of the 241 Toll Road because you “don’t get involved in politics” or “it will never happen,” it is time to reconsider.

This isn’t a game of politics but your quality of living, your children’s health and your home values are at stake. The threat is real and the Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA) is moving forward.

Toll roads in Orange County have never served the vast majority of motorists, only those who can afford to pay. Did you know we (through Caltrans) are footing the ongoing maintenance bill for these roads that most of us don’t or can’t use? We were duped into paying for the toll roads through development fees, loss of open space and public lands, in addition to some of the highest tolls in the country.

Now, the TCA wants to bulldoze through our town. Although they deny having chosen a specific route, there is no denying that their efforts are locked on a proposed route that would wind straight through the center of town. This route would destroy thousands of homes, divide our city and come dangerously close to parks and schools. Most visible would be its encroachment on and over San Clemente High School. The toll road will blaze through miles of the city’s open space. The TCA has been secretive and dishonest in their attempt to push their road through, strategically pitting us against other groups.

Although their 2016 settlement with the Surfrider Foundation and the Save San Onofre Coalition “saved” Trestles, the foundation made a sour deal, agreeing not to take a position on any future proposed routes.

This effectively pushed the TCA back to reconsider the San Clemente route that they themselves had rejected years earlier due to the destructiveness of the route.

There has been an amazing groundswell of support from local citizens and public officials to stop the toll road, but it is still very much a David-versus-Goliath effort.

At the Movies: ‘Mission: Impossible Fallout’Maintains Loyal Fans

hen Brian de Palma’s 1996 film adaptation of the hit TV show Mission: Impossible (1966-73) was released, I doubt many viewers were expecting the movie to turn into one of the best blockbuster franchises around, let alone 22 years later. And I think it really boils down to one person: Tom Cruise. Not just because of his movie star presence and acting chops, but he is personally behind the scenes as a producer making sure the films have the best producers, directors, writers, etc. He genuinely enjoys what he does.

Continuing right off from Rogue Nation (2015), Mission: Impossible— Fallout has Ethan Hunt (Cruise) on a race across Europe and Asia to stop a terrorist organization called “The Apostles.” The group wants a case

of plutonium sold to their latest client, known as “John Lark,” to set up a string of bombings. The mission features Solomon Lane (Sean Harris) from the previous movie involved with the terrorist attempts and Ethan’s ex-wife, Julia (Michelle Monahan), even shows up.

Henry Cavill, Angela Bassett and Vanessa Kirby are new additions to the all-star cast, and not only do Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames and Alec Baldwin return, but so does director Christopher McQuarrie. Cruise, McQuarrie and Cruise’s Skydance Media have the M:I formula down to a T. From the stellar cinematography and fight choreography, to even just the comic relief, the team knows not to make the plot too complicated but at the same time asks existential questions. Fallout is the perfect mid-summer action flick for big screen viewing. DP

f I had a magic wand, I’d create single, senior men and introduce them to single, senior women who tell me they’d like to have a male companion.

In July, I have received several emails from women regarding the lack of men. Four of those emails are being included today. Two were from daughters hoping their widowed mothers would meet a potential mate.

Christi emailed, “I read your article in the San Clemente Times and thought of my mom, an incredible widow, 62, active, fit, positive, outgoing, fun-loving, an accountant for a large church, one of the most sincere and honest people I know.

My dad died of cancer 12 years ago, and while she has dated a little and would like to meet someone, I’ve yet to talk her into internet dating, but she insists it will just happen, kind of like the story you tell of meeting Greta.

But, I’m not seeking a boyfriend or husband.

I frequently attend public places. I go to all dances in local senior facilities. I attend all shows at the Cabrillo Playhouse and the Laguna Playhouse. I am not sitting at home waiting to meet a new friend, but the result is always the same: senior couples, senior couples, or senior ladies.”

‘Red Card’ Blows the Whistle on World’s Biggest Sports Scandal

W

ith the World Cup having just wrapped up it is an excellent time to examine a dark history of the organization that not only runs the World Cup, but rules soccer: FIFA. Ken Bensinger’s, Red Card: How the U.S. Blew the Whistle on the World’s Biggest Sports Scandal does just that. Most everyone knew that FIFA, its six regional organizations, and more than 200 countries were not perfect, but the level of corruption was breathtaking in scope, money and for how long it went unchecked.

Even the United States was not immune as one of its leading soccer officials was caught up in the corruption.

That all changed in late 2011 when IRS special agent Steve Berryman, who also just happened to love soccer, began looking into Chuck Blazer, who had received more than $500,000 in suspicious payments over a fifteen-year period. With the FBI notifying Berryman about Blazer, it seemed this would be a slam dunk tax evasion scheme.

Bensinger outlines how this ended up becoming a Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) investigation that ultimately led to an examination and trial of FIFA and soccer throughout the world by the United States Department of Justice, led by Evan Norris. Six years later, when the investigation ended, more than 40 people would be charged, including 24 who plead guilty and agreed to help investigators for less punishment and no jail time.

Ultimately, only two defendants were tried and found guilty. One faced up to 60 years in prison while the other faced 120 years. A third defendant had been found not guilty of RICO conspiracy.

What makes this book fascinating is how we got from Berryman’s initial investigation to the verdicts. What goes on for six years reads no different than a fictional crime thriller. Leaders of regional soccer organizations like Jack Warner, President of CONCACAF, which oversees North and Central America and the Caribbean, was skimming money from anywhere he could. Bribery was the name of the game.

Additionally, the hypocrisy was even more damning as money that was supposed to go to poorer countries to build soccer fields and promote the sport to children was ending up in the wallets of men like Warner, who owned multiple homes, luxury cars, and expensive jewelry.

Sadly, even when he “retired” from soccer, his successor was no better. Jeffrey Webb was even worse than Warner, if that is possible. First, he promised to clean up the corruption. No more payoffs and bribes. Webb wouldn’t even take a salary.

Where Warner skimmed hundreds of thousands at times, Webb had no problem

asking television executives for up to $10 million as his bribe to make sure the exclusive rights went to a certain channel. The amounts shocked everyone involved in the negotiations, which is saying a lot since these people were all used to paying bribes and kickbacks. Everyone did it, and it was just part of the way deals were made.

Unfortunately for the sport, these higher-ups were not the only ones cutting illegal deals for themselves and slowly tarnishing the sport they claimed to love and serve. Men like Julio Grondona, longtime President of Argentina’s soccer association, controlled who got broadcast rights to the professional leagues in that country.

Grondona was one of the sport’s most feared and powerful person because of the illicit influence he wielded.

Those convicted knew how to hide the money. They would set up the shell companies in the Caribbean where banks are less inclined to help any investigations or offer any information about their clients. Furthermore, fake contracts between these companies would be signed BOOK TALK and used to transfer the

By Dan Deneve money. Then the money would move several more times between banks and fake companies.

What did these men in was these corrupt transactions mostly passed through American banks as very few banks would wire or could handle the amounts being passed around, legally or illegally. Now the United States could investigate these crimes since they were committed on American soil.

As a sports fan, albeit, not a huge soccer fan, I enjoyed this book. The amounts of money floating around soccer just in bribes along lets us know soccer is a very valuable commodity. Unfortunately, as Bensinger points out, many of those who claim to serve and love the sport, really only loved the sport so they could serve themselves heaping piles of money at the expense of the sport itself. If you are a soccer fan or love real life crime, then I can’t recommend this book enough.

Ocean Wranglers Saltwater Cowboy Memorial Fishing Tournament enters its third year

F

ashion yourself as a saltwater cowboy?

Do you dream of ranging over the open blue plains and wranglin’ up the biggest yellowfin, bass or even marlin you can find?

Do you fancy giant silver belt buckles or just want to have a good time?

The third annual Saltwater Cowboy Memorial Fishing Tournament might be the place for you on Aug. 10-11 out of Dana Point Harbor.

The young charity tournament offers two days of open-water fishing followed by an awards banquet at the Dana Point Yacht Club that features a dinner, silent auction, “Texas style” auction, dancing and music from The Chris Anderson Group.

“Years ago,” Gorman said, “my dad used to run a fishing tournament in Baja California. After he passed, my sister said, ‘you ought to resurrect the tournament dad used to do.’”

While Gorman, a San Clemente resident, got the tournament organized, it was his sister who provided the inspiration for the cowboy angle. Dan’s sister is part of a husband-wife cattle-roping team and came

up with the idea for the tournament’s trophy that inspired the tournament’s name.

“In the rodeo world, the trophy is a big silver belt buckle,” Gorman said. “’Saltwater Cowboy’ has a catchy ring to it, and it would bring in friends of my sister and brother from Texas. Everybody liked the name because it resonates with a lot of people.”

The tournament has resonated with

local people as well. Gorman said the tournament attracted 21 boats and over 200 people to the auction last year to raise $13,000 for Alzheimer’s Orange County.

This year, Gorman expects 22 boats and a similar auction turnout to raise money for the Community Outreach Alliance from San Clemente.

Gorman has been pleased with the early results.

“It’s a feel-good event,” Gorman said.

“It’s a lot of work, but it’s something I enjoy doing. Mix a little business with pleasure. Clients of mine will donate products and supplies. Clients get to display their wares to the fishing community.”

The tournament is also unique because it’s a multi-species tournament. Anglers get one point per pound of the fish they catch, and there are awards for top angler and top boat. Registration for a team of four anglers is $600.

Along with the silent auction, the “Texas style” auction will be complete with a lively auctioneer to get people excited for the bidding wars. Those not participating in the tournament can still come to the dinner and auction with a $60 ticket at the door.

Gorman says the tournament is the first of its kind down this way, but he expects it to continue.

“Nobody does that down here in Dana Point,” Gorman said. “Nobody around here. It’s been very well received.”

Dana Wharf Fish Count Bass still the catch of the summer

E

ven with early-week swells and wind last week, the water rebounded, and the strong summer of bass fishing continued at Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching.

In his weekly report, Captain Brian Woolley said the swells and wind sharply lowered the water temperature on Monday, July 23 and also tore through some local kelp lines. However, the temperatures got back up to a solid 72-73 degrees for the rest of the week.

Bass fishing has still been the star attraction this summer. Woolley said the calico bass have been best on sardine bait.

Rubber lures and artificial bait are still seeing plenty of action as well.

The captain said there is still a little yellowtail to the south, but offshore fishing still hasn’t come around for them yet.

W

ith the Vans U.S. Open of Surfing in full swing this week, it’s the perfect time to celebrate Bella Kenworthy’s ever-growing list of accomplishments.

Competing in both the amateur and pro skateboard events at the Open, the 11-year-old from Dana Point is as much a threat on four wheels as she is three fins.

Starting her week off at the Open on the right foot, she finished sixth in the amateur Continental Championships skateboard final and now has her sights cross-haired on the pro ranks.

And as far as her surfing goes, she went undefeated during the WSA regular season. She didn’t lose a heat all year long, which is pretty remarkable if you consider what a fickle playing field the ocean can be at times. She also ended up with a very respectable second-place finish in the U.S.A. Surfing Championships.

And to kick off the summer, Bella took first place in the inaugural G.W.R. Am Park Final at Dew Tour up in Long Beach in June.

She also recently won the Under 14 division at the Vans Girls Combi Pool Classic.

Needless to say, Bella’s going places— and fast. DP

For Timmy Patterson, building surfboards is a family tradition

S

urfboard building is a time-honored tradition in Dana Point and San Clemente. It’s one of the first areas in the United States where boards first were made when the sport jumped the pond from Hawaii.

Innovators and entrepreneurs like Gordon “Grubby” Clark and Hobie Alter were among the first to begin surfboard production on a more industrial scale.

Landing in Hobie’s shop in the early ’60s were a pair of brothers from Hawaii, Ron and Robert Patterson.

“Hobie opened up in ’61, I think.

Robert called my dad and told him there were jobs up in Dana Point,” said shaper Timmy Patterson from his San Clemente surfboard factory. “He’d just had two kids and I was on the way, so he moved up to Dana Point to work. I grew up in a surfboard factory, just as my kids have too.”

But the Patterson family history actually reaches back farther than that, back to Waikiki during World War II. “Walter Hoffman sat me down one day and said, ‘You remember your grandpa?

Well, he used to make me blanks out of the lifeboats from Pearl Harbor. They were made out of balsa wood and he’d skin them and build blanks out of them.

We’d shape them in a woodshop in Waikiki and sell them so we could stay there.’ That would have been in the ‘40s,” Patterson said.

From sweeping the shop floor as a grom to learning to fix dings, foil fins and hot coat as a youngster, Patterson applied himself to learning every step of the board building process. He recalls shaping his first board around 1977. Today, he makes some of the most high-performance surfboards in the world.

“To be able to surf better has always been the goal,” explained Patterson of his shaping philosophy. “I’ve always been into wedgy little beachbreaks, and just to be able to get up and down on them, to have that speed all the time and fit in the pocket and turn anywhere you want on a wave—it’s kind of a constant evolution.

T. Patterson Surfboards consists of a small retail space on El Camino Real in San Clemente with a shaping facility and glass shop below in the notorious Surf Ghetto.

“The Surf Ghetto has changed a lot,” Patterson lamented. “The workforce has dwindled. Some of it is production overseas, but at the same time, I don’t see kids come walking in here saying they want to learn how to make surfboards.

They want to learn how to shape. They don’t want to learn to clean the shop, and that’s the first thing. When I started working I was stoked just to sweep the halls and clean-up. That was your in to a shop. Now it’s like, ‘I want front row…gimme, gimme, gimme…help me design it and then I’ll cut it and shape it.’

I did everything from making fins, sanding, glassing and shaping.”

Patterson’s always been a dedicated hand-shaper, priding himself on his eye and techniques, but in the last year he’s also added a computer shaping machine to his arsenal.

“It’s cool to be able to design with the programs these days because, coming from full production shaping, to be able to relate it into a program is incredible,” he said. “You can copy things pretty much dead on, and it’s like, ‘Wow,

I’m getting a hand-shaped feel out of a computer.’”

At the moment, business is good and Patterson is keeping up with the steady demand for his boards.

“I can’t just drop off 20 boards at a shop,” he said. “I can’t put that money out. If I’ve got 20 boards, they’re going into my shop. There is a point where things start to get out-of-hand. I think it’s about 70 boards a week where things start to become a nightmare. At about 40 boards a week everything’s manageable.”

“I’ve got my own glass shop, and if I want to design a board and I want it now I don’t have to wait that long,” Patterson continued, throwing a board under his arm and his sandals on his feet. “I can shape a board and it’s ready to ride the next morning, or I can even shape it, glass it and have it in the water by the evening…and I do that with a lot of my riders. It’s cool because I get instant feedback. I don’t have to send it out to a cut house and wait a couple weeks then wait a couple more weeks while it’s in the glass shop. That idea is gone. I can have an idea right now, make it and ride it.”

And like that, Patterson closes the door to his shop, climbs in his van and heads to the beach. With his quota of boards done for the day, it’s time to surf. DP Page 18
