All OCFA stations across the county held an individual ceremony with a large central event held at OCFA headquarters in Irvine.

The moment of recognition at 8:46 a.m., was followed by a moment of silence at 9:03 a.m., honoring the 343 New York Fire Department firefighters killed in the Sept.

11 attacks on the World Trade Centers in New York City.

Surfrider Foundation South Orange Chapter, Sullivan Solar Host Community Choice Energy Discussion THE LATEST: On Sept. 12, more than 25 South Orange County residents gathered at the Dana Hills Tennis Center for a meeting held by Surfrider Foundation South Orange County and Sullivan Solar Energy to discuss renewable energy.

The meeting was timely considering the recent signage of S.B. 100 by Gov. Jerry Brown. The bill states California will operate entirely on renewable energy by 2045.

Opening the meeting was Robin Ganahl, an organizer and advocate of the Orange County Clean Energy group. She discussed the concept of Community Choice Energy (CCE). In this system, which Ganahl explained is gaining popularity in cities across the state, cities elect to own and operate their own energy sources. The energy would still be delivered on existing infrastructure and produced by third-party private manufacturers, but it would be the cities’ choice as to which source it comes from. In this model, rates are regulated by a nonprofit cities create and is not Dana Point Times September 14-20, 2018

investor-owned, such as San Diego Gas & Electric or Southern California Edison.

Some meeting attendees were concerned that with the possible loss of distribution revenues, investor-owned utilities would simply raise production costs to compensate for lost revenue. Ganahl explained that was unlikely as production rate increases are regulated by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC.) Marin was the first city to adopt a CCE in 2010. Currently, no South Orange County cities are operating CCE programs, but governments have dedicated funding for formal evaluations for such, according to the Clean Power Exchange project.

Ganahl stated that Irvine has slated the decision to begin a feasibility study on its next City Council’s agenda.

As these CCE programs would include the option for greater mixtures of renewable energy sources, Sullivan Solar Energy followed Ganahl with a presentation on the current state-of-affairs of solar energy in residential platforms.

First Phase of Los Patrones Parkway Opens to the Public THE LATEST: The first phase of a new, four-lane arterial highway through Rancho Mission Viejo was recently completed, and motorists got the chance to drive on it for the first time on Wednesday, Sept. 12.

The highway, Los Patrones Parkway, was approved as part of an agreement between Orange County and Rancho Mission Viejo, LLC in 2004.

The first phase of the highway runs from Oso Parkway to Chiquita Canyon Drive.

A second phase, slated for completion in late 2018, will run to Cow Camp Road. The entire stretch will be about 4.5 miles when fully complete.

The highway is being built by Rancho Mission Viejo without the use of taxpayer dollars and ownership will be transferred to Orange County once it is fully completed.

“The completion of the first phase of Los Patrones Parkway is another major step towards our goal of improving transportation mobility in South County,” Lisa Bartlett, Supervisor for Orange County’s Fifth District, stated in a press release.

“This project addresses the needs and concerns of current and future homeowners and our transportation agencies, while protecting South County’s beautiful natural environment.”

Los Patrones Parkway is expected to access to future job centers in Rancho Mission Viejo as well as existing job centers to the north.

It will provide access to the SR-241 toll road, which can be accessed from Oso Parkway.

The highway will have two wildlife crossings for animals to access more than 40 acres of habitat on the highway’s west side.

The crossings are more than 200 feet long and will support deer, bobcats and coyotes.

Wildlife exclusion fencing is installed to keep animals from entering the highway; it will have a tighter weave on the bottom to keep smaller animals from getting through and looser weave on top to keep bigger animals out.

More than 100 acres of slopes adjacent to the highway will be revegetated with native habitats, including coastal sage scrub.

THE LATEST: As solid surf batters the Southern California coastline this week, Capistrano Beach Park continues to take a beating. Dana Point Times reported in July that OC Parks announced the fire pits at Capistrano Beach Park would be removed after being deemed not financially sustainable as well as a risk-of-injury to the public. From February to July, OC Parks confirmed that it has spent more than $14,000 on sand cleanup, berms, trash cans, bench and K-rail replacement and had moved two of the aforementioned fire pits from south to north. Overall expenditure during that time frame in Capistrano Beach Park was more than $42,000 compared to Aliso Beach Park, where South Coastal Operations expenditures were only $10,000 for repairs.

WHAT’S NEXT: In addition to expenditures listed above, OC Parks reported having paid a consultant $4,000 to conduct the Capo Beach Shoreline Erosion Investigation Project. More details on the findings of that study will be updated when they become available. —DR

Man Found Dead in Dana Point Harbor Jetty Sept. 8 THE LATEST: On Sept. 8, a dead body was found by Orange County Sheriff’s Department (OCSD) deputies within a cave of the Dana Point Harbor jetty.

The deceased, Daniel Leroy Miller, 70, is reportedly a longtime Dana Point transient who had lived on-and-off within the Dana Point Harbor jetty for decades.

A Dana Point resident who wished to remain anonymous claimed to have met Miller more than 15 years ago. This resident said that he had allowed Miller to use his home address for identification. He referred to Miller as “kind-hearted” and he allowed him to use his mailing address as more aggressive transients would likely take his social security checks from him, he said.

WHAT’S NEXT: An OCSD representative said that the Coroner’s Office will be performing an examination, but at this time no foul play is suspected. OCSD confirmed that Miller had been removed from the jetty multiple times in the past. —DR www.danapointtimes.com

SOCGEMS Meeting to Feature Napa Rocks, Triceratops An animated Triceratops puppet will highlight the Sept. 19 presentation by the President of the California Federation of Mineralogical Societies (CFMS) Jennifer Haley at the South Orange County Gem and Mineral Society (SOCGEMS) meeting, 7:15 p.m., at the San Clemente Community Center, located at 100 N. Calle Seville.

The dinosaur puppet was designed by a paleontologist for natural history museums and Jurassic theme parks. It is used in educational outreach programs of the CFMS to encourage students’ interest in dinosaurs, rocks and minerals.

At the SOCGEMS meeting, Haley will

demonstrate the Triceratops puppet, show her special collection of rocks from Napa and discuss the early history of rock and gem clubs from the 1700s.

Children and students are encouraged to attend this meeting to learn about earth science scholarships and other educational programs, including Junior Rock Hounds. Dinosaur cookies will be provided by the speaker.

Haley spent childhood vacations with her grandparents in Napa Valley, where she discovered her love of rocks and making jewelry. While studying nursing in college, she explored for agates in the area’s rivers and springs and she learned to cut and polish her rock finds from two World War II veterans. In 2004, she moved back to Napa and joined her first Gem and Mineral Society where she took lapidary classes and got involved at the state level with CFMS. This is her second term as president of the nonprofit organization.

Meetings of SOCGEMS are held the third Wednesday of the month, 7:15 p.m. in the San Clemente Community Center, 100 N. Calle Seville, San Clemente (next door to the library). Guests are welcome at no charge. Speaker presentation is preceded by hospitality and refreshments, a raffle and brief business meeting.

The Capistrano Seaside Inn 2.0 Mark Adams and the California Receivership Group to give the historic roadside motel a make-over

I

n 2010, Trip Advisor ranked the Capistrano Seaside Inn in Dana Point among the top-10 dirtiest hotels in America.

Since the spring of 2017, Mark Adams of the California Receivership Group has been working to ensure that never happens again.

Today, Sept. 14, Adams and his team are taking the next step in renovating this dilapidated structure as they ask Orange County Superior Court Judge Robert J. Moss for $2.4 million dollars in order to construct the new Coast Highway landmark.

The property was constructed around 1930 with some office space and 28 motel rooms. It was noted as one of the last remaining roadside motels in Dana Point, which helped shaped California car culture On Sept. 1, 2016, the city red-tagged the site after conducting an inspection in conjunction with the Orange County Fire Authority, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department and the Orange County Health Care Agency. The city then issued a written notice of violation and order to the property owners to begin work to correct the violations by Oct. 3, 2016 and to complete the corrective repairs no later than Dec. 5, 2016.

According to previous court documents, the property owner refused to make any of the necessary repairs to the property, and as a result the buildings continued to deteriorate and increased the health and safety risks to the property owner, its neighbors and the general public.

To the relief of a number of Capistrano residents and travelers riding along Coast Highway just north of Palisades Drive,

large-scale demolition is finally occurring on site. This portion of the project, funded by a court grant of $998,000 dollars, is referred to as pre-construction demolition.

Adams and California Receivership Group have contracted Miken Construction for the pre-construction phase thanks to their history of work on historic sites such as the Saddleback Inn in Santa Ana. As for the Capistrano Seaside Inn, it will be a rebuild-—not a full demolition.

“We will be keeping the foundation and main structure of the hotel intact,” Adams explained. “The main walls are strong and the basic structure will remain the same.

The building to the south of the main hotel will remain a manager’s lodge as well as a reception area.”

The hotel’s former owners, The Sunshine Group LLC, owns the parcels of land on both the northern and southern borders of the Capistrano Seaside Inn. The hill behind the now-in-ruin hotel will remain untouched as the chaparral provides essential rooting for the hillside east of the hotel.

On the western front of the hotel, outdoor sitting areas and a communal fountain oriented in a gathering place will bring tenants together in front of the Coast Highway and the Pacific Ocean beyond it. The hotel will remain a north-south linear orientation, with a second story containing slightly larger rooms, just as the original did.

“We want to keep it in that mid-price range,” Adams remarked. He voiced the importance of appealing to the local culture of Dana Point and South Orange County.

Adams, who lived in Santa Monica, recalled fond memories of traveling south alongside Coast Highway, passing along Dana Point and surfing the various breaks around the area.

“Dana Point is an amazing town with a rich history and we want to appeal to, and sustain, a niche of the blue-collar traveler to be able to enjoy the beauty of a town like this,” Adams remarked. He added that in addition to physical renovation, in order to secure construction funds from Judge Moss, his plan needs to be economically sustainable.

“We want the new Capistrano Seaside Inn to continue to be accessible, affordable and in time with modern trends in hotels,” Adams said.

In order to pull a modern stylized hotel out of the almost 100-year-old site, Adams has enlisted Annette Kilgruss-Crall of the Celestine Agency, who has built an entire itemized style guide of furnishing objects and furniture to be included in the $2.4 million request.

When Adams and California Receivership finish their re-construction, the

current owners, The Sunshine Group, will have the opportunity to re-purchase the renovated hotel from Adams and California Receivership Group. Adams explained that The Sunshine Group, would, in addition to the named value of the hotel, pay construction fees as well as litigation fees.

Adams mentioned before their meeting with Moss that in case The Sunshine Group sought to purchase the renovated hotel back, California Receivership Group would considering appealing to Moss that there be a mandatory third-party hotel management company put in place.

We Have Good and Bad News

T

he federal government recently released official figures on the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the second quarter of 2018. It rose at a favorable annual rate of 4 percent. In general, sustained growth stimulates jobs and contributes to lower unemployment, which in turn boosts tax revenues while generating the money to finance spending on public projects.

At the same time, here in Southern California, housing values continue to rise, with the median home price for June in the sixcounty area at an all-time high of $536,250 — up 7.3 percent from a year earlier. Obviously the nation’s business interests are prospering; all the while, homeowners’ rising property values add to their net worth.

With California Coastal Cleanup Day ahead of us on Sept. 15, I would like to encourage residents to be mindful of where they spend their time and energy.

There are a few clean-up sites being formally planned for Coastal Cleanup Day in Dana Point and I want to first and foremost say I support everyone making an effort.

There are so many nooks and crannies along our small stretch of beach that need our help. I would encourage everyone to get out in their communities, maybe before joining one of the other wonderful cleanup efforts, go find their own pocket where trash gathers and clean it up.

As usual, of course, the good is mixed with the bad. The GDP growth is narrowly distributed, with rank-and-file workers left behind. And as income inequality becomes more severe, the likelihood is future quarterly GDP growth cannot be sustained. As for the increasing home values, only current owner’s profit—the deck is stacked against those seeking to purchase. Currently in San Diego County, for example, with the median home price at $575,000, 28 percent of buyers can afford this price. In Orange County, with a median price of $739,000, it’s ever less favorable, with only 21 percent able to buy.

Do we have problems?

We most certainly do.

What are our elected leaders doing to resolve the problem? They’re hiding behind a national unemployment rate of 4 percent. In 1994, the Labor Department redefined unemployed as “persons without jobs who have actively looked for work within the past four weeks.” If they're re-added those without work for longer periods and part-time employees, the rate would well exceed 20 percent … not quite as bad as the Great Depression, but close.

A final thought: If you’re depending upon the government to cure the problems ailing the U.S. economy, you’ll wait a long time.

Unfortunately, elected officials specialize in getting elected to public office, not in solving problems after being elected.

ith September usually being a pretty empty month for new movie releases, it also makes for a good time to visit some decent movies that have been out for a while. Still in theaters currently is Björn Runge’s The Wife, starring veteran character actors Glenn Close and Jonathan Pryce. Two powerhouse performances that might be remembered at the end of the year when “best of 2018” lists and awards season comes around.

In 1992, an elderly Connecticut couple awakens to a phone call from Stockholm, Sweden, informing the husband he’s just been chosen for the Nobel Prize in literature. Joseph Castleman (Pryce) has spent his whole career as one of the most acclaimed and respected novelists of the mid-20th century. His wife Joan (Close) is his biggest supporter and confidant. Their son, David, (Max Irons) tags along for the celebration, as does nosy biographer Nathaniel Bone (Christian Slater), interested in Joe’s life story.

The Wife is adapted by Jane Anderson from Meg Wolitzer’s popular novel.

Director Runge tells a tale on the lives of writers and the lives of people who knew writers. The first half of the film is particularly strong story-wise, though unfortunately, the plot twist in the second act is a little predictable.

Some of the best scenes are between Lloyd and Starke, and it’s no surprise Starke can channel a younger Close, as she is her real-life daughter. Even with the cliché turn of events, The Wife is still worth a look for the performances. DP

What Should Couples Older than 50 Call themselves?

I

n the 24 years of writing newspaper columns about age 50-plus dating and relationships, there is a question for which I’ve never had a good answer.

What do unwed, older-than-50 couples call themselves?

I was reminded of that question last week by Mark Flannery of Fullerton, who emailed, “Donna and I have been together for eight and a half years. We were having lunch in Dana Point with Wally Horn and his partner of 30 years, Bobbi, and this question arose: ‘What do we call ourselves? Partners? Companions? Significant others? Boyfriend/girlfriend?’”

My partner Greta and I have been together for 20 years. We aren’t married. I still find myself wondering how to introduce her. Often, “life partner” comes to mind. It’s an OK term, but I still get a puzzled look from people who seem to be wondering what the heck a life partner is, or they think ON LIFE AND it’s a lame explanation for LOVE AFTER 50 why we aren’t married.

By Tom Blake Greta and I enjoy taking cruises. We always opt for open seating in the dining room, which means we are usually seated with different people every night. Frequently, table mates ask, “How long have you two been married?”

Greta and I look at each other and one of us responds, “We’ve been together for 20 years.”

It’s easier to leave it that way than trying to explain that we are significant others or life partners or whatever we are calling ourselves at that moment.

When Greta and I would visit my mom in her retirement community in Santa Rosa, when we were out socially with Mom’s friends, Mom would introduce Greta by saying, “This is Tom’s Greta.”

That was her way of saying we were living together and not married, which she probably wasn’t entirely thrilled about.

The fine folks at the Sea View Pharmacy in San Clemente know Greta and I aren’t married. When I pick up my prescriptions there, they don’t ask “Do you want your wife’s prescriptions?” Instead, they ask, “Do you want Greta’s prescriptions?”

and lives in Irvine. I’m 71, retired and live in Fullerton. We go back and forth between the two cities a lot.

Our friend Wally is 84 and Bobbi is 75. They are both retired and have been together for almost 30 years. When we were talking about what to call ourselves, I floated an idea I’ve had for some time: “semispouse”.

It received a favorable response from our foursome. It isn’t perfect, but it seems to have qualities the other labels lack.

The term is even included in the Urban Dictionary.

At first, I thought the “semispouse” term a little bizarre, visualizing a semitruck driver with his wife riding with him in the cab.

I looked up the term in the Urban Dictionary. Its definition: “A significant other that plays the role of a spouse without being legally married.”

And then I decided, when written, the term “semispouse” would look better with a hyphen inserted: semi-spouse.

While semi-spouse for unwed age 50 and older couples will work for now, I’m all ears to hear suggestions from readers for what to call mature unwed couples. Just don’t call us, “Two old fogies living together.”

Football to Host Honor the Valor Game Friday Dana Hills football will host its seventh annual Honor the Valor game on Friday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m at Dana Hills High.

Forty-five combat veterans from World War II to current conflicts will be honored in a series of events leading up to the game against Irvine on Friday night.

The Dolphins will again wear special jerseys where each Dana Hills player will have the name of a veteran on his back nameplate instead of the player’s own name. After the game, the players will present their jersey to their corresponding

veteran.

The Dana Point 5th Marine Regiment Support Group and the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 9934 help to provide support for this event.

On the field, Dana Hills will look to hold off the Irvine Vaqueros. Irvine is winless, 0-3, and has allowed 48 points or more in each of their three losses.

After two big wins, the Dolphins (2-2) are coming off a big road loss to Laguna Beach, 34-8. Dana Hills will look to get back over .500 with a win and match their win total from a year ago.

Girls Tennis Takes Third at Stanford Dana Hills girls tennis battled through four matches last weekend and earned three tight tournament victories to earn third place in the Golden State Classic Tournament at Stanford.

The Dolphins beat St. Francis, 4-2, and Monta Vista on a tiebreaker, 3-3 (10-6), to advance to the semifinals. Dana Hills was swept by Palos Verdes, 6-0, but bounced back to take another tiebreaker in the thirdplace match against Los Gatos, 3-3 (7-1).

Dana Hills (2-3) has battled through a

tough preseason schedule and is ranked No. 8 in the latest CIF-SS Division 1 poll. The Dolphins’ No. 1 singles player, Courtney Swift, is 12-1 on the season in nonleague, non-tournament play.

Dana Hills hosts Murrieta Valley on Tuesday, Sept. 18.

Dolphins in the Rankings Five Dana Hills teams were featured in the latest CIF-SS polls.

The cross country squads are the top Dolphins teams in the rankings with the boys holding at No. 2 in Division 1 and the girls coming in at No. 7 in Division 1.

Dana Hills took the sophomore boys team title at the Laguna Hills Invitational last weekend, and both teams will travel to the Mt. Carmel Invitational this weekend before hosting the Dana Hills Invitational on Sept. 22.

The Dana Hills girls volleyball team (132, 0-1) come in the combined Division 1 and 2 poll at No. 11. The Dolphins started the season on a hot streak but dropped their league opener to Aliso Niguel in four sets. Dana Hills hosted Trabuco Hills on Thursday, Sept. 13, but results were not available at press time.

orado season continued in full force last week at Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching.

In his weekly report, Captain Brian Woolley said the fleet “got a taste of some super fun offshore fishing” throughout the week. There were some good signs early in the week, and when the conditions opened up later in the week, the group was able to take advantage.

Woolley said the dorado has been the highlight. The dorado were plentiful out in the open water. Private boats have pressured the dorado, so Woolley and Co. kept tabs on the fish later in the week.

Despite the pressure, nearly every trip boast were able to hook into some dorado.

Last Thursday, the Sum Fun pulled in 71 dorado with only 20 anglers with the fish weighing between 8-20 pounds. The dorado trips were also grabbing some skipjack

Bass fishing took a dip this week with some cooler water and winds. Woolley said he expects things to straighten out to get the bass fishing rolling again.

Another highlight of the week, an angler on the Boardroom caught a 170-pound blue fin tuna overnight last weekend near San Clemente Island.

Pro Surfing Gets Equal Pay WSL announces pay equality for men and women starting in 2019

M

aking a big move to level the field in pro surfing, the World Surf League (WSL) announced it is going to make equal pay part of its competitive series. WSL is the first Americanbased global sports league to pursue gender pay equality.

“This is a huge step forward in our long-planned strategy to elevate women’s surfing and we are thrilled to make this commitment as we reveal our new 2019 schedule,” World Surf League CEO Sophie Goldschmidt said in a prepared statement. “This is the latest in a series of actions the league has undertaken to showcase our female athletes, from competing on the same quality waves as the men to better locations and increased investment and support.”

The move will be effective across all of the WSL’s platforms, including the Championship Tour and the Qualifying Series as well as Juniors, Longboard and Big Wave events.

“It definitely shines a little light on the possibilities and the future of the sport,” said San Clemente resident and three-time world champion Lisa Andersen.

ued. “We always want some sort of a positive outlook on things. It’s great because surfing’s always been a men’s club. With a lot of respect to the guys, that’s what I dreamed of; I looked up to them, and if it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t be where I’m at, but I think for the young kids, it’s just like, oh man, the dreams are just going to get bigger. What more could you ask for?”

Part-time San Clemente resident and eleven-time world champion Kelly Slater concurred.

“The women on the Tour deserve this change. I’m so proud that surfing is choosing to lead sports in equality and fairness,” he wrote on Instagram. “The

female WSL athletes are as equally committed to their craft as the male athletes and should be paid the same. Surfing has always been a pioneering sport, and this serves as an example of that.”

The announcement comes amid a number of sweeping changes in the sport of surfing. Last week, the WSL ran the Surf Ranch Pro in the Slater-designed wave pool facility in Central California. And surfing will be an Olympic event for the first at the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo, which is sure to bring more visibility and attention to the sport.

he Positive Vibe Warriors’ annual Stoke-O-Rama lands at T-Street this Sunday, and in honor of every grom’s favorite comp, this week we’re shining the light on 7-year-old Kalani Grodzen.

Already a three-year veteran of the StokeO-Rama, he explained that he keeps the vibe alive by “always smiling and showing other small groms how to do it if they ask me.”

A student at Las Palmas Elementary School in San Clemente, not only is he a little shredder on a surfboard or skateboard, but he’s getting his Spanish fluency dialed so he can go adventuring throughout the Spanish-speaking world.

a very good job at doing their job. It’s really worth paying these guys and girls so we can all watch and let them be who they are. I think it’s fantastic.”

The road to equal pay for women in surfing has been fraught with roadblocks over the years. In addition to winning three world titles, Andersen was instrumental in ushering in the “Roxy revolution” in the 1990s. The face of the popular women’s surfwear brand, she helped elevate the performances on the women’s world tour at the time, raising the profile of the sport.

“Money was a very touchy subject, but it was just different. Different times,” Andersen said. “I don’t think any of us expected equal pay, but I do think we expected support in general. I think that was the biggest difference then. Not everybody had a sponsorship or the support to do the tour, much less win the prize money. At that point, it was just about getting sponsorships. That was the main focus.”

“I was very fortunate to have that support, but it didn’t come easy to me,” she continued. “I had to fight for it, try and convince people, preach and pray, steal and borrow to get that. But it was worth it in the end. I wouldn’t take any of it back. I respect everyone that had to follow that path and didn’t get what I got, but I also feel that, those were the times and we had to do what we had to do to get where we are now.”

These are amazing times to be a young girl in the water. Local talents like Kirra Pinkerton and Samantha Sibley, who are currently ranked first and second, respectively, in the WSL North American Junior rating, are sure to benefit. And as Andersen said, “The dreams are just going to get bigger.” DP
