Five things Dana Point should know this week NRC to Discuss FuelLoading Operations at SONGS with Town Hall Forum THE LATEST: The federal government’s regulatory arm on nuclear energy will lead a town hall forum in San Juan Capistrano this month to go over the recent resumption of storing spent nuclear fuel at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS).

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission intends to use the public meeting at the San Juan Capistrano Community Center to provide the local community with details on its “ongoing inspection activities,” as well as answer questions from the audience.

The forum comes more than a year after an incident involving a canister carrying spent nuclear fuel had occurred at SONGS. During the incident on Aug. 3, 2018, the canister was being placed into a vertical receptacle but wasn’t aligned properly, causing it to get stuck on a guiding ring.

Edison made the announcement last month that it had officially resumed its continuing efforts to place the plant’s nuclear waste into a dry storage facility.

Local Artist and Teacher Passes Away THE LATEST: Capistrano Beach-based artist and painter Mary Carmen Calvo left her view of the world behind on her canvases when she passed away early on July 8, 2019.

Born and raised in Northern Spain, Calvo’s love for art and capturing the world that encapsulated her on canvas began at a very young age. Her passion for painting and the arts were the spark that drew others toward her, said her husband, Dr. Walter Henry.

“Her intensity . . . when she started on something, there was no pulling back. She went straight head into it and did it till the end,” said Henry.

This passion was what motivated the young teenage artist to pursue her artistic career at the Academy of Bellas Artes in Madrid, Spain. Calvo continued her education as the years went on, studying first in Paris and then moving to the United States as a means to focus more intensely on her artistic career.

In the 1960s, Calvo settled down in Los Angeles, where she encountered much success and demand for her one-of-a-kind impressionist paintings. The manner in which she controlled and maneuvered the light through colors and oil paints captivated artists, galleries and institutions of every caliber, including the Segerstrom Center for the Arts and the gallery at UCLA. Calvo eventually moved to Orange County with her husband, where she established her European-styled home and sanctuary, as well as her art studio.

“She really worked hard to create a place and an environment where she could paint. . . . She took a lot of inspiration from museums in Spain, and this is where she spent a lot of her time painting,” said Henry.

A funeral service in honor of Calvo’s memory is yet to be finalized by the family. All of her paintings, as well as her sketches, can be found on her website at calvo-studio.com and at the Laguna Beach Art Museum and Los Angeles City Hall.

Redemption Recycling Center Closes

Capistrano Beach Preschool Closes Amidst Wrongful Termination Lawsuit

as a lawsuit against the church was filed alleging its preschool director was wrongfully terminated after she raised concerns of sexual misconduct within the church.

Sandra Bonaparte, the former director for Palisades United Methodist Preschool in Capistrano Beach, filed the suit in May. “In total, the plaintiff has worked for the defendants for the last 19 years without any issues until she started reporting concerns of sexual harassment by Pastor Darren Cowdrey in 2017,” the complaint states.

The complaint states Bonaparte was fired as retaliation after she raised concerns over allegations of sexual harassment against the pastor. According to the lawsuit, accusations include staring at women’s buttocks and making “sexually suggestive comments” about women’s appearances.

The church has stated to OC Weekly and Orange County Register that Bonaparte’s employment was terminated due to a mishandling of bonuses and raises. But according to Susie Kiley, a former member of the school’s advisory council and parent to two former preschool students, that reasoning does not add up.

“You need board approval to move any kind of money,” Kiley said. “(Sandra) is a remarkable person, and we stand by her. For her to be fired over bonuses just doesn’t make any sense.”

Kiley says she was an involved parent while her children attended the school intermittently between 2005 and 2014. “(Sandra) left a profound impact on my children,” Kiley said. “The community loves her. It’s such a loss for families with kids who attended or were planning on attending this preschool.”

Sand Sculpture Honors Victims of Dayton and El Paso Shootings THE LATEST: San Clemente resident Jay Bellamy created a sand sculpture to pay respect to the lives lost from a pair of mass shootings that recently killed 31 people.

The sculpture stood strong as of press time at Baby Beach in Dana Point.

The deadly shooting killed nine people in Dayton on Sunday, Aug. 4, occurring just hours after a fatal gun attack at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas that killed 22.

Bellamy said there was a group prayer held in honor of those who had lost their lives.

Bellamy’s sculptures have drawn attention in the community before. He also created a sand sculpture in tribute to Memorial Day, a Mother’s Day sculpture depicting flowers and, for Easter, sculpted a 12-foot crucifix, with a likeness of Jesus nailed to it, on the same beach.—LB

The Facebook page for City of Dana Point spread the news on Tuesday, Aug. 6.

“California’s largest recycling center company, rePlanet, which had a location locally behind Ralphs on Del Prado, has gone out of business. We would like to encourage Dana Point residents to continue to recycle through their bins provided by CR&R,” the post stated.

RePlanet has reportedly closed due to increased business costs and falling prices of recycled aluminum and Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic.

According to Consumer Watchdog, a nonprofit organization that studies California’s recycling industry, estimates that about 40% of redemption centers have closed in the past five years. The closures result in consumers getting back only about half of their nickel and dime deposits on bottles and cans, according to the organization.

WHAT’S NEXT: Earlier this year, California lawmakers proposed AB 1080, which would require plastic and other single-use materials sold in the state to be either reusable, fully recyclable or compostable by 2030. The legislation passed the state Assembly and is under consideration in the Senate.—LB

Mike Tyson Holds Charity Golf Event in Dana Point Mike Tyson partnered with Standing Together to put on a charity golf tournament at Monarch Beach Golf Links in Dana Point on Friday, August 2.

The world-famous former boxing champ invited film and boxing stars including Jamie Foxx, Anthony Anderson, Victor Ortiz and Tom “Tiny” Lister Jr. to participate in the fundraiser. The organization Standing Together works to provide resources to homeless people and victims of drug abuse.

In 2004, ESPN wrote about Tyson’s 2003 bankruptcy and how the he became homeless. Reports mentioned that Tyson had been sleeping in homeless shelters since filing bankruptcy and had accepted handouts from drug dealers.

“I’m very proud to be a part of the Standing United community,” Tyson said.

“I have aligned myself with them, because their work is truly life-changing. They give hope to the hopeless, and this golf tournament is a good way to raise money for addiction and homelessness by spreading more awareness.”

Republicans from all over Orange County attended the San Clemente Area Republican Women Federated Summer Fundraiser on Wednesday, July 31, with an evening “Wine Tasting Cruise” in Dana Point Harbor.

Among the guests in attendance were Greg Raths, who is running for Congress in the 45th District, and Brian Maryott, the San Juan Capistrano mayor, who is running for Congress in the 49th District.

Both men thanked all of the attendees and stated it is time for all Republicans, Independents and moderate Democrats to help change the political landscape in California, said SCARWF spokesperson Sue Pieczentkowski.

Raths and Maryott also emphasized the need to focus on greater business and job growth for the citizens of California, Pieczentkowski said.

Beneath the Barge An Inside Look at Edison’s Operations to Expand Artificial Reef

C

onstruction to expand the Wheeler North Reef into Dana Point waters began last month, as indicated by the derrick barge located off the coast of San Clemente, about a half-mile from Califia State Beach.

While paddleboarders and members of the public are cautioned to keep a safe distance from the barge, Dana Point Times was given access to the derrick for

a closer look on the operation.

Jenny McGee, a Dana Hills High School alumnus, is the project manager for the reef expansion.

About the third week of August, the derrick barge will move north until it is directly in line with the pier, and then it will work its way northward, according to McGee. The northernmost portion of the new reef will be located just off of Beach Road on the southern tip of Capistrano Beach.

Wheeler North Reef, a 174-acre, manmade kelp forest, currently stretches from out past the end of the San Clemente Pier south to Seal Rock. SCE is expanding the reef to more than double the size (384 acres) and stretching it into Dana Point waters. Mandated by the California Coastal Commission, the reef is intended to facilitate kelp forests that were lost to warm-water discharge from the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS).

The project is anticipated to pause in

September, in respect to lobster season, and resume next year in May and September 2020.

McGee says beachgoers and boaters will see one or two tugboats, at most, in a given day.

“We are making sure the tugboats towing the rock are well-coordinated. We want to be as synchronized and efficient as possible. We wouldn’t want a tugboat to be waiting around, waiting to unload rock, so if there’s one tugboat ahead of schedule, it will wait in Long Beach,” McGee said.

The reef material includes metavolcanic and granitic boulders about one-half to three feet in diameter and hail from rock quarries in Catalina Island and Ensenada, Mexico. Boaters are advised not to intervene between the barge and tugboats, which are traveling at a speed of 7-8 knots.

“What I love about this project is that even after we’ve fulfilled compliance, this reef is going to continue to give back. It

will still be facilitating marine life and supporting the kelp bed,” McGee said. “I feel like I am adding value to the local ecosystem and contributing to something much bigger than myself.”

A single layer of rocks on the sea floor will be three-feet-high or less, in a minimum of 38-feet-deep water.

The original reef was built in 1988 and stretches about 1.4 miles southward from the San Clemente Pier. The $20 million dollar expansion will reach north of the pier for total length of about five miles.

The cost dropped from the original estimate of $33 million. The bill will be footed by investors and rate-payers.

For months, I stood by and watched my husband, Assemblyman Bill Brough, be dragged through the mud by his own political party because he dared to challenge the mighty Transportation Corridor Agencies (the Toll Roads). But now, my children have been negatively impacted by the negligent actions of some in the name of political retribution against my husband.

How dare they?

To promote good governance, my husband proposed a bill merely asking for an audit of the Toll Roads (that have spent and collected billions of our dollars) to ensure that his constituents’ hard-earned money was not being squandered by this unaccountable quasi-governmental powerhouse. Now one would think that any elected individual, regardless of party, would encourage legislation that reviewed how an agency with the power to mandate fees spends that money. (I am not talking about the toll one pays to drive on the roads; I am talking about the fees assessed by the toll roads on developers and businesses attempting to build or expand in our communities that increase every year and then get passed on to us.)

This is not the case here. In fact, when my husband began discussing this legislation, he was told by his then-district director, Jennifer Beall (whose husband is Rancho Santa Margarita Councilman L. Anthony Beall and receives compensation for serving as a director on the Toll Road board and whose law firm has represented toll road and transportation authority issues throughout the country), that “he would be destroyed.” This was stated to my husband in front of another elected official.

My school-aged children are being severely and callously harmed by the false allegations being levied against their father for petty politics and money, albeit a lot of money, which apparently is more important to some than the welfare of a child.

Supervisor Lisa Bartlett, who recently told the press that she is experiencing nightmares because of my husband’s alleged actions that occurred 11 years ago, has done quite well by the Toll Roads.

Her campaign consultant, president of Venture Strategic, on a motion made by Ms. Bartlett as a board member of the Toll Roads, ended up with a $1.8 million-dollar consulting contract. Apparently, conflict of interest is not relevant with the Toll Roads. The motion to hire her consultant was originally made when Ms. Bartlett still owed money to this consultant.

Now, maybe there is nothing wrong with any of this (an audit should show any misconduct). But, the response against my husband makes me think that certain folks are afraid of what may be unearthed by such an audit. A few of the current and former Toll Road board members, including Ms. Bartlett, Anthony Beall, Ed Sachs and Michael Munzing, who claim to be good governance Republicans, have thrown fits, personally bashing my husband, while other board members focus on the legislation and welcome an audit. What are certain board members so afraid of?

I am in no way suggesting that credible sexual harassment claims should be casually dismissed; but, neither should the possibility of false allegations that are politically or financially motivated be overlooked. False allegations should be taken equally seriously, as they severely undermine those hundreds of thousands of legitimate claims that are out there.

Lisa Bartlett has changed her story repeatedly about the event that she alleges occurred 11 years ago. Also, she seems to want to publicize her allegations at a time that would benefit her politically. Additionally, I have credible reason to believe she has promised a job to the other woman that alleged my husband harassed her in return for her talking to the press.

We were told that this would all go away if my husband does not seek re-election, in which case his Toll Road bill would die.

These facts should at least raise questions about the legitimacy of the allegations.

That said, if what they say about my husband is true, they absolutely should file a complaint against him in a court of law—clearly, they are not worried about discussing the allegations (they had no problem talking to the press and others in

closed and open door meetings). Please, I implore you, rather than call my husband a “sexual predator” in your constituent meetings and at social events, file a lawsuit, let’s get the facts out. A lawsuit would also grant my husband his right to due process. Unfortunately, even if my husband were to prevail, the damage that they have caused cannot be undone.

This mom has had enough! If there is wrongdoing, one should absolutely file a complaint; but it is not OK to intentionally ruin anyone’s reputation and harm their children solely for personal or political gain. I am utterly disgusted with what politics has become—rather than logical arguments to support their political positions, candidates and politicians sling mud and tell lies in an attempt to damage those with whom they disagree.

Politics has become a game where politicians profit off of the backs of the citizens whose interests they are supposed to be protecting and serving. Ask your elected officials about their position on auditing the toll road to see how the money was spent; their answer says it all!

The Fast and the Furious. A simple big-budget car flick is now one of the most profitable titles in cinema. There have been some duds, some pleasant surprises, and now in 2019, we’re officially onto spin-offs. After noticing the chemistry and popularity of the side characters played by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Jason Statham in The Fate of the Furious (2017), UniverDana Point Times August 9-15, 2019

sal Pictures began planning a full-length feature starring the two.

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw has Luke Hobbs (Johnson) and Deckard Shaw (Statham) assigned to be partners in tracking down an evil, super-powerful agent called Brixton (Idris Elba), who is on the hunt for a deadly virus that could wipe out the planet. But Shaw’s sister, Hattie (Vanessa Kirby), gets it first and drastically injects it into herself before Brixton can grab it. Now both the leads and the villain are racing to find her first

before the virus is contagious in the next three days.

The main reason this franchise has lasted so long is because it stopped taking the tone and theme seriously and just fully embraced the schlock. Hobbs & Shaw might be the schlockiest of them all. There is some particularly perplexing editing, though. The feature is directed by David Leitch, whose forte appears to be this brand of glossy blockbuster. 30 Percent Federal Tax Credit for Solar Sunsets after 2019

T

he 30 percent solar investment tax credit has proven to be one of the most important federal policy mechanisms to incentivize clean energy in the United States, and it is scheduled to sunset in the coming months.

Those who have yet to go solar are now rushing to take advantage of this federal incentive before it reduces in 2020, then disappears shortly after.

The solar tax credit was approved in 2006 and has made solar affordable and accessible for hundreds of thousands of Americans. Residential and commercial solar has grown rapidly across the country, especially in California where rates are high, the sun is plentiful and the tax credit is a great bonus, which helped over 2 million families and businesses make the switch to solar. Many Californians are now adopting energy storage with their solar power systems as batteries can qualify to claim the 30 percent tax credit when paired with solar.

Since the solar investment tax credit was enacted 13 years ago, the U.S. solar industry has grown by more than 10,000 percent, experiencing 53 percent growth annually and remains one of the nation’s fastest-growing industries.

The solar investment tax credit was originally set to expire in 2016,

but was saved by a last-minute, bipartisan Omnibus Appropriations Act, which included an extension of the tax credit in its full amount through 2019. This extension includes a sunset clause, which sets the residential tax credit to reduce to 26 percent in 2020, 22 percent in 2021 and in 2022 it will be nonexistent. The commercial tax credit reduces to 10 percent in 2022 and remains at that level indefinitely.

Solar power systems must be in operation with permission to operate by the local utility company by Dec. 31 to be eligible for the credit.

“Annually, there is a rush from consumers to get their solar installed and turned on by the end of the year to claim the tax credit the following spring once they become aware of the deadline,” said Daniel Sullivan, founder and president of Sullivan Solar Power, “Given that this is the last year of the 30 percent tax credit, we highly recommend homeowners sign up to go solar before Sept. 30 so we can have your solar power system operational by the end of the year.”

“I think it’s important to not waste so much,” says Mehr. “Less is more. Get less items, but get quality items.”

“You don’t have money for art? Stick your surfboard on the wall. That’s the coolest art there is,” Mehr suggests.

“You play the guitar? Stick all your guitars on the wall. Make that a total focal point. There are a lot of things you can do, and we love helping people out with stuff like that.”

It’s Time to Go

I

t’s hard to believe that almost a year has passed since my partner, Greta, and I departed on an 82-day cruise to the Far East. After the trip, people asked questions, such as “How did you two survive as a couple in a 390-square-foot stateroom for so long?”

Now, people—especially those who’ve read about our travels in this newspaper—ask, “Where to next?”

Our reply: “Ireland for 10 days—followed by a 20-day cruise stopping in Iceland, Greenland and Scotland.”

“When?” they’ve asked.

“Aug. 7 to Sept. 7, this year.”

So when you read today’s column, we may be having a Guinness Stout at the brewery in Dublin. As seniors, our philosophy is to travel as often as we can, while we are physically able to do so.

Greta and I are truly blessed in retirement to be able to travel to distant lands. We do not take that for granted.

Greta and I have friends in San Clemente. You’ve likely heard me mention Chris and Tina Anastasio’s names before.

He’s 85, and she’s 77. They met 15 years ago, when Chris was a dance host on cruise ships. Tina was from England.

They had the longest, long-distance relationship of which I’ve ever known: 13 years and 5,419 miles. On Feb. 12, 2017, they married at the Dana Point Yacht Club. Greta and I attended their wedding and continue to admire their senior spirit.

Chris emailed this week: “I love that you and Greta travel as much as you do. I tell everyone: ‘Life is short. If you have the time, the money and the health, go see the world. Life is like a book. If you don’t travel, you have only read one page.’

“Tina and I are going to Moscow for a week while we are in England, and we have booked a two-week cruise over Christmas and New Year’s. We will spend New Year’s Eve in Dubai. Travel safely.”

“Why Ireland, Scotland, Iceland and Greenland?” people have asked.

Here’s why:

Two years ago, Greta and I were on a Holland America cruise around South America. The future-cruises director made a presentation to a very captive audience (passengers already on board).

He talked about a cruise departing Amsterdam Aug. 18, 2019, with stops in Scotland, Iceland and Greenland.

We were interested, because we hadn’t been to those countries.

Because the cruise was two years away, Holland America dangled perks to the audience, enticing them to sign up.

For example: a reduced airfare to Europe and back, waiving the daily tips to the crew, and a refundable $100 deposit.

We took the bait.

We added the Ireland land tour to our itinerary because we hadn’t been there, either.

It’s amazing how fast those two years went by.

I will do an article or two about the trip in this newspaper.

We will have internet access in Ireland and onboard the ship. So, don’t hesitate to email me. It might take a little longer to respond than normal, but I will.

Wish you were here to help with the luggage. It seems to get heavier every year. But these two late-70s seniors will do just fine, especially if we can locate that Guinness Brewery.

Have you always been an artist?

I always wanted to be an artist, and I loved different forms of art. My mother was an artist and a nurse, so I suppose I followed in her steps. I was a nurse practitioner for over 40 years, but it wasn’t until I retired and moved to Dana Point from Newport Beach that my husband encouraged me to follow my passion.

What does art mean to you?

Art is an expression of your feelings and your soul. I paint for myself and my feelings. A friend of mine saw one of my paintings, and she said she could feel what I felt by looking at it. It evoked emotion, and it made her experience what I was feeling. And it’s all very fulfilling. I like when someone sees my art and wants it in their home to look at every day. It’s almost like leaving a legacy behind for my family and friends.

Football Drop State football participation hits lowest numbers since 1998, DHHS reflects the decline

H

igh school football participation was down 3.16% last year in the state of California, according to the 2018-19 California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Sports Participation Survey released on Aug. 1.

Football was down to 91,305 participants in the 11-man variety across the state, which marked the fourth straight year of decline and the lowest overall participation since 1998. There were 91,301 high school 11-man football players in California in 1998—just four fewer than the 2018-19 total—according to numbers from the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).

“As in previous years, we have noticed a steady and continued decrease in football participants,” CIF executive director Ron Nocetti said in the CIF release. “It is imperative that we continue to partner with organizations such as USA Football and their Football Development Model, which provides a road map for how we coach, play and learn the game at every level.”

Despite the decline in 11-man football, as well as the second consecutive dip in 8-man football, football is still by far the most popular sport in the state, with the 91,305 participants nearly doubling the totals of boys track and field’s 55,355 and boys soccer’s 54,996.

While there is the decline with the state’s top dog, sports participation is up in the state overall by 0.67% to reach a new CIF all-time high for a seventh straight year.

Boys volleyball (6.89%) and boys soccer (3.25%) saw the largest growth among the top 10 boys sports. Girls soccer topped the most popular girls sports with 49,342 participants, a 4.56% increase, followed by girls volleyball (45,997) and girls track and field (45,235). Traditional competitive cheer saw the largest girls increase at 12.26%. Boys swimming and diving (4.59%) and girls swimming and diving (5.08%) saw the largest percentage decreases in their respective top 10s.

As the most popular sport in the nation, football’s changes will always grab the main focus.

Nationally, 11-man football hit a high of 1.1 million players in 2008-09, a number that declined by 75,000 as of the 2017-18 season. The NFHS’ 2018-19 national numbers become available later this month.

DANA HILLS MIRRORS STATE DECLINE Here at home, Dana Hills coach Phil Skinner said he’s seen the statewide numbers reflected in his program, as well as in the school’s youth camps.

“We had a real sharp decline last year,” Skinner said. “We’ve risen a little bit from last year, but not much. On the varsity level, we’re running about 46, and on the freshman level, we’re running 34. We’re doing a frosh-soph team (instead of a pure freshman team and no junior varsity), but most of my sophomores are on varsity.”

Skinner said there are a few South Orange County schools in the Dolphins’ situation. Laguna Hills and Trabuco Hills are close in numbers to Dana Hills. Capistrano Valley and El Toro are down a bit.

Dana Hills’ two closest neighbors are up, with Aliso Niguel seeing a slight increase and San Clemente fielding 86 freshmen and 180 players total in its program.

At the Trinity League’s media day on Aug. 2, all six of the league’s coaches

agreed their numbers hadn’t been largely affected. New Santa Margarita coach Brent Vieselmeyer said one cause of lower numbers could be opportunities in other sports.

“They’re telling kids you have to specialize (in one sport),” Vieselmeyer said.

“That’ll knock numbers down. You can play pretty much any sport year-round, which I think is a little bit sad, too. Here (with our players on the panel), you’re looking at all multi-sport athletes.”

In the conversation about the larger numbers, many believe that head injuries and parents’ concern about head trauma had led young athletes away from football.

Skinner said that tackling form has been a focus, but with recent certifications, it has been a greater emphasis.

“I feel bad seeing the decline or parents getting worried because of concussions, and certainly those are a concern,” Skinner said. “All of the staff is HEADS UP Concussion-certified. We’ve gone through all of that. We take precautions, our number of practices are limited, the time in practice is limited. I feel like the game is safer than it ever has been.”

season did not affect Dana Hills’ schedule, as most of the teams on the nonleague schedule were not fielding JV teams, either. Skinner believed up until the summer camp that Dana Hills was going to have a JV team, but even with anticipating players joining the program late, the numbers didn’t quite make it possible.

“Certainly, I’d like to have three levels of football,” Skinner said. “I’d like to have two or three solid lines and be at least three deep at every position. I just know how great football is, and how great it is for kids, and how great it is for their experience in high school.”

Despite these dips in participation, Skinner still feels good about the state of the game and where football is going.

“I still think that there’s a core base,” Skinner said. “You’ve got to remember all these guys are going to be fathers at some point, and when they experience what was great about it for them, and they want those same things for their son, like I want for my son when it’s time for him to play, I still feel like there’s going to be enough that football will prevail and continue on.

t was a big week of action at the U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, especially for San Clemente’s Kade Matson.

Matson took out the hotly contested Junior Men division, bringing the title home to San Clemente for the first time since 2015. In the final, he faced off against another hometown talent, Jett Schilling, as well as Japan’s Joh Azuchi and Australia’s Caleb Tancred.

s part of the Positive Vibe Warriors Foundation’s efforts to make the ocean a happier, more stoked place to surf, the foundation recently provided a handful of aspiring young surfers with scholarships to attend a training session held by the Big Wave Risk Assessment Group (BWRAG).

Hosted by San Clemente’s own big-wave champ, Greg Long, the course focused on teaching first aid and rescue skills. The idea is that the more surfers there are prepared for an emergency, the safer our lineups are.

This marks back-to-back regional Pro Junior wins for Matson, as he now puts plenty of space between himself and the field trying to secure a spot toward World Junior Championships qualification.

In the main event, San Clemente’s Griffin Colapinto brought the passion and the fire all week long, looking like one of the in-form surfers of the event.

Running out of gas in the semifinals, he settled for a very respectable third-place finish.

Colapinto and current world No. 1 Kolohe Andino will now look toward the Tahiti Pro at Teahupoo later this month. Andino is leading the race for the 2019 world title, and a good result in the South Pacific will help get him closer to his goal. He’s had some good results there over the past couple of years and should be feeling pretty comfortable.

For the juniors, the RVCA Pro Junior will take place September 27-29 in Newport Beach. DP

he story begins in San Francisco in 1952. Jack O’Neill and a small enclave of bohemians from the city have begun tempting fate in the turbulent waters of Kelly’s Cove at Ocean Beach.

With conditions cold, foggy and foreboding, O’Neill solves two problems: he invents the “wetsuit” to keep him and his buddies warmer, and he opens the first surf shop.

In both instances, he forever changed surfing.

By ’54, the first surf shops had opened their doors down south. Nancy Katin and Hobie Alter opened shops in Surfside and Dana Point, respectively. Katin was making the most sought-after boardshorts, and Hobie’s foam and fiberglass surfboards were a smash success thanks to an earnest friendship with pal Grubby Clark.

Ben Brantell, a 13-year-old student at Shorecliffs Middle School, was a recipient of one of the scholarships and attended the training. Learning things such as CPR, rescue breathing and how to treat a cervical injury, it was most definitely time well spent.

“The ocean is not just about surfing, and bad things could happen anytime to anyone,” Brantell said after the BWRAG course was over. “It has given me more confidence in my surfing, because I feel calm, and feel like I could help someone in need.”

Besides getting dialed in with some lifeguard skills, Brantell just finished competing in his first-ever U.S. Open of Surfing Junior Men’s division. It was a great experience and will serve him well as he continues his journey in the sea. DP

After the first few shops broke ground, a slew of others popped up on the West Coast in the early ’60s. California’s local surf shops immediately became the hubs for the budding West Coast surf culture.

“If surfing is a religion, the surf shops are the temples of stoke,” explained ’77 world champ Shaun Tomson in a recent piece he wrote.

These “temples of stoke” are where generations came to learn, laugh, talk story, buy their boards, wetsuits and wax. It was where young surfers were indoctrinated into the lifestyle and culture that turns naive beginners into real, lifelong surfers.

In recognition of the vital role that surf shops have played in the evolution of the sport and lifestyle of the beach, the Surfing Heritage and Culture Center’s new exhibit, “Temples of Stoke,” celebrates more than 20 of the most historic surf shops from up and down the West Coast. The shops have been invited to install their “shrines” in the exhibit space.

Boards, photos, memorabilia and artifacts that tell the story of each shop will be on display to highlight the ethos and values of each uniquely different beach town along the West Coast.

“As surfers, our local shops are so much more than just a place to buy a surfboard or a pair of trunks,” said SHACC’s curator, Barry Haun. “These are the places where we learn to be surfers.”

The Temples of Stoke opening night party will be held on Friday, August 9, 2019, from 6-10 p.m. at SHACC in San Clemente. Shop owners, employees and industry luminaries will all be on hand to celebrate and share their uniquely classic stories that helped make the sport and culture of surfing what it is today. It is open to the public, and tickets are available at SHACC.org.
