Five things Dana Point should know this week OC Auditor Controller Passes Away THE LATEST: Orange County’s AuditorController, Eric Woolery, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 8, of apparent natural causes, according to a county spokesperson.

The 53-year-old CPA had founded a regional CPA firm specializing in services for small businesses and entrepreneurs.

He would later join the public sector by serving on the City of Orange Audit Oversight Committee for 10 years. He then served as the city’s treasurer, helping to enact policy changes to balance employee compensation and benefits. Woolery was elected County Auditor-Controller in June of 2014 by a historic margin of 57% in a field of five candidates and was sworn into office in January 2015. He was re-elected in June of 2018 with a landslide 74% of the vote and was sworn in to his second term in January 2019.

The auditor-controller is the chief accounting officer of the county responsible for budget control, disbursements and receipts, and financial reporting. In addition, this office is responsible for audits of certain agencies within the county.

In 54 of the 58 counties in California (including Orange County), the auditorcontroller is an independent, nonpartisan elected office established to provide various accounting and property tax administration services to the county government, special districts, schools and cities.

In 57 of California’s 58 counties, internal audit is part of the auditor-controller’s job. On June 26, 2018, a majority of the members of the Orange County Board of Supervisors voted to remove Internal Audit from the Orange County AuditorController, effective July 1, 2018, making Orange County the only county in the state in which internal audit reports to the Board of Supervisors instead of the auditor-controller.

South County Cities Urge Bartlett to End County’s Regional Approach to Homelessness THE LATEST: Several South Orange County cities are calling for a countywide approach when it comes to providing the homeless with shelters and other related services, rather than addressing the issue on a regional basis.

According to a letter signed by seven South County mayors, the cities are looking to meet with Orange County Board Supervisor and Chairperson Lisa Bartlett while proposing to eliminate Service Planning Areas (SPAs)—the county’s regionbased method to offer services for health care and homelessness.

The SPAs currently divide the county into three regions: north, central and south.

In the letter, which was sent to Bartlett’s office on Wednesday, Aug. 14, the cities of Aliso Viejo, Dana Point, Laguna Hills, Lake Forest, Rancho Santa Margarita, San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano lament the use of SPAs, stating that homelessness is a “Countywide issue, and the County needs to address it as such.”

“In executing its responsibility to provide for the indigent, the County can-

not discriminate on the basis of locality,” the letter reads. “Yet, the current Service Planning Areas (SPAs) arbitrarily formed by the County, have created unnecessary boundaries that have negatively impacted the delivery of services to Orange County’s homeless population.”

“I understand and share the Cities’ frustrations regarding homelessness; it’s my community, too,” Bartlett said in an emailed statement. “The cities need to know that the Service Planning Areas (SPA) do not restrict access to shelter and resources by region. We are working to set up a meeting with all South County cities, as we have in the past, to discuss our shared responsibilities addressing homelessness.”

The cities’ request comes just weeks after the finalization of a settlement agreement that requires the county to establish standards of care at county-contracted homeless shelters in the North and Central SPAs. That settlement resolved a pair of lawsuits that a handful of homeless advocacy groups filed against the county in 2018 over the removal of an encampment near the Santa Ana riverbed.

The cities point out that other services offered countywide include “the Central Jail, Probation Department, Health Care Agency, and District Attorney’s Office,” and, therefore, homelessness should also be a countywide issue.

Using figures from the 2019 Point in Time report, the cities make the argument that there are enough unused shelter beds in the north and central parts of the county to accommodate the South SPA’s homeless population, which totaled 538 individuals when the count was conducted

in late January.

“By eliminating the SPAs, and providing access to all County-funded, partiallyfunded and/or operated homeless shelter beds, you can positively impact the lives of 538 homeless and countless residents,” the letter stated.

Dana Point Mayor Joe Muller is one of seven mayors who signed the letter to Bartlett.

“We need leadership to help solve this problem with us, not push it onto us,” Muller said. “SPAs are a bad idea. Why should there be picking and choosing of who gets access to county services?”

The Point in Time Count is a biennial study in which volunteers help count the number of homeless in their area to determine the county’s indigent population. This year’s count was conducted January 23-24.

“Your letter specifically focuses on shelter beds and indicates that elimination of Service Planning Areas would provide homeless individuals in South Orange County with greater access to shelter beds in other regions,” Bartlett said in her own letter on Thursday, Aug. 15, responding to the mayors. “The existence of SPAs does not create the barrier that restricts access to shelter beds in other regions.”

According to the report, the homeless population in South County is 763. In Orange County, as a whole, the homeless population is 6,860. There were 738 unused beds at emergency and transitional housing shelters throughout the county on the night of Jan. 22. Of that total, 453 were at shelters in the North and Central SPAs, while there were 83 unused beds in the South SPA. “Providing access to these beds to all homeless individuals in the County, irrespective of where they currently reside, would result in the largest positive step taken in addressing homelessness,” the cities stated. “Policy direction related to the SPA’s arbitrary boundaries have prohibited these beds from being provided Countywide.”

Dana Point Harbor Partners, LLC (DPHP) is a collaboration created to operate and redevelop Dana Point Harbor in a public-private partnership with the County of Orange. The partners signed a 66-year master lease on Nov. 2, 2018 after a 20-year community effort for revitalization of the harbor.

Development will see to the reconstruction of the commercial core and the Dana East and West Marinas, two new hotels, and fully rebuilt docks.

Bryon Ward, of Burnham-Ward Properties, and Bob Olson, of R.D. Olson Development, will work together on the harbor’s commercial core.

“Once the community is accepting and has an understanding of what we’re building, then we proceed in getting that

approved and getting building permits,” Ward said in a previous interview with Dana Point Times. “We could begin construction perhaps as soon as the middle of next year.”

Pelagic Birds Draw Wildlife Enthusiasts to Dana Point THE LATEST: Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching is now offering monthly four-hour pelagic birding trips out of Dana Point Harbor.

The diversity in pelagic bird species inspired Donna Kalez, the general manager of Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching, to roll out the new trip.

“We are so excited about offering bird watching trips, we have to get the word out to keep them running,” Kalez said.

“A few years ago, we started putting rare pelagic bird sightings on our website. We also took note that some birders that go with us frequently on our whale watching trips starting logging what they see.”

In a birding trip last month, a naturalist aboard logged sightings for a total of 91 birds, comprising 14 species, including Red-necked Phalarope, Royal Tern, Pomarine and Parasitic Jaeger, Cassin’s Auklets, Common Murre, Heermann’s Gull, Western Gull, Elegant Tern, Black Storm-petrel and Pink-footed Shearwater.

CUSD Initiates Appointment Process to Fill Vacant Board Seat THE LATEST: The Capistrano Unified School District Board of Trustees has opted to initiate an appointment process in order to fill its vacant seat that was previously held by Gary Pritchard, whose four-year term representing Area 5 was set to expire in 2020.

During a special board meeting held Wednesday, Aug. 14, the trustees voted in favor of appointing a new trustee to the seven-member body rather than calling for a special election, citing costs and time constraints.

Based on estimates provided by the Orange County Registrar of Voters, CUSD noted that a special election to fill the vacancy was likely to cost the district about $165,000 to $185,000.

CUSD also wouldn’t be able to hold the special election for the Area 5 seat, which represents portions of Aliso Viejo and Laguna Niguel, until California’s Primary Elections on March 3, 2020.

“As far as dates go, if we were to appoint in September, we have pretty close to a year that that person would be on the board,” Board President Gila Jones said,

further noting that “the election would not be till March 3; that means they’re only with us eight months, and then they’ll have to run again, and having that vacancy is of concern to me.”

Per the state’s election code, special elections are to be held on regular election dates but no fewer than 130 days after a seat has been vacated. Because an election held on Nov. 5 would be too soon, an election couldn’t have taken place until the spring.

From the public’s perspective, Trustee Judy Bullockus acknowledged that the drawback to appointing someone is that voters wouldn’t get a say in the matter.

However, drawing from her own experience as an appointee who had nearly a year and a half before the seat was up for election, she said it takes about a year to learn the job.

She also noted that her appointment saved the district the roughly $160,000 it would have spent on an election.

“Now my term, that was about 18 months. We’re talking about this term being less, essentially about 12 months that the person would actually be (a trustee),” Bullockus said. “Let me say, it takes about 12 months just to learn the job, but you’re spending $180,000 just to put someone in for a year.”

As the trustee for Area 7, Bullockus represents portions of Rancho Santa Margarita, Mission Viejo and Coto de Caza.

She was appointed to the position in June

2017 and was elected in 2018 to serve her first full term ending 2022.

Trustee Amy Hanacek echoed some of Bullockus’ sentiments, noting that the district is currently exercising austerity measures and shouldn’t consider an election when the alternative process of appointing a trustee can save money.

“I cannot support spending that type of money right now when we have a vehicle with which, as we did with Trustee Bullockus, to appoint someone provisionally,” said Hanacek, who represents Area 1, encompassing portions of San Juan Capistrano, San Clemente and Dana Point.

Pritchard, who represented Area 5 and was serving as board vice president this year, resigned from his post on Friday, Aug. 9, because he relocated out of the area, CUSD recently announced.

The board met Wednesday for a scheduled special meeting to get public input on the Orange County Academy of Sciences and Arts’ application to form the OCASA College Prep charter school.

Following Pritchard’s resignation, CUSD included the item for the board to also discuss replacement proceedings for the open seat on the special meeting agenda.

At the onset of Wednesday’s meeting, Trustee Hanacek offered a brief statement about Pritchard’s departure, noting that although he wouldn’t have wanted to make a big deal of it, his presence would

Woman Drives Car through Church

A woman reportedly lost control of her car on Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 6, blowing through an intersection and smashing into the front side of a San Clemente church.

Carrie Braun, public information officer at Orange County Sheriff’s Department, said police will not be releasing the name of the driver, who is an adult female.

“She was not cited or arrested,” Braun said. “It’s not believed at this time that she was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and investigators will continue to work to determine the cause of the collision,” she said.

The driver suffered only minor scrapes, according to authorities.

Witnesses and church members said the woman was driving her mother’s black Mazda sedan when she sped through a stoplight at the intersection of Calle Amanecer and Avenida La Pata.

She didn’t stop there. Her car continued at unknown high speeds into Heritage Christian Fellowship’s parking lot, blasting through the church’s glass front entrance and into its main lobby, before plowing Dana Point Times August 16-22, 2019

through a second set of doors and into the church’s main sanctuary.

According to witnesses, the impact sent doors and chairs flying across the room before the car finally came to a stop near a storage closet in the front of the sanctuary.

“The chairs softened the blow and brought it to a stop,” said Roger Gales, senior pastor at Heritage Christian Fellowship, located at 190 Avenida La Pata. “Probably one hundred chairs saved her life.”

Eileen James, a volunteer at the church who was in the office at the time, said she thought a bomb went off, or that it was an earthquake.

“We just heard this huge explosion; the whole building shook,” James said. “We opened the office door and looked down the hall, and we saw glass everywhere.”

James and other church staff walked into the main sanctuary to find a car idling near a storage closet in a front corner of

“Gary possessed unique qualities that will be severely missed. As an educator, father of school-aged children, champion for public education and dean of Cerritos College, he brought a profound perspective of that K-14 experience,” Hanacek said, concluding: “Here’s to you, Dr. Pritchard, thank you for your service to young people and keeping the focus on the profound role of public education.”

For nearly a decade, Pritchard served on the board, having first been elected in 2010. He was reelected in 2012 to serve a full four-year term and he later won his reelection bid in 2016.

WHAT’S NEXT: According to CUSD’s proposed timeline, the district has begun accepting applications for candidates in Area 5 who wish to be considered for the seat.

The window to submit applications will run through Aug. 28, as the district is looking to have the seat filled by mid-September.

Superintendent Kirsten Vital told the board that CUSD would be advertising the open seat by reaching out to the governing bodies in Aliso Viejo and Laguna Niguel.

If all goes to plan, the board could hold public interviews with candidates during a special meeting on Sept. 9 and a new trustee could be sworn in as early as Sept.

“She said that the brakes weren’t working; that’s why she didn’t stop. My speculation is that’s not exactly accurate.”

James said the woman was conscious after the accident and was telling witnesses she was OK. The driver, whose airbag deployed, had virtually no injuries, church staff said.

“She had a little piece of glass that had got her arm, and that was it,” James said.

“It was a miracle. Literally the whole thing was a miracle. The fact that just stuff was damaged, that she’s safe, and her coming down Amanecer at the rate she was going, coming across the intersection and not hitting something or anything else—Glory to God! I’ve got goosebumps all over again.”

The front end of the car was totaled, but James said it should have been in the shape of a pretzel.

Thankfully, no one at the church was killed or injured, and no services were going on at the time of the accident—around 1:15 p.m.

“If there was, it would have been tragic,” said Pastor Gales.

Pastor Gales said the church is still waiting on a complete estimate of damages to the building, which was built almost 20 years ago.

Bridge in Dana Point Harbor Undergoing Repairs OC Public Works crews are currently completing routine maintenance to the Island Way Bridge in Dana Point Harbor.

Island Way Bridge is still open to through traffic at all times during construction; however, lane closures will be required.

Portions of the sidewalk will be subject to closure during regular working hours, but one sidewalk will remain open at all times to allow continuous pedestrian access during construction. Traffic control measures, including flag personnel and construction signage, will be present.

“Area residents and Dana Point Harbor visitors may experience delays,” an OC Public Works press release states.

The routine maintenance will focus on repairing sidewalks, barriers, existing expansion joint and concrete spalling. The construction began on Wednesday, Aug. 14 and is anticipated to continue until Sept. 13, on weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Resolution Urges Feds to Act on California’s Nuclear Waste California State Senators Patricia Bates (R-Laguna Niguel) and Bill Monning (DCarmel) have introduced Senate Joint Resolution (SJR) 11 this week that urges Congress and President Donald Trump to approve legislation that would prioritize the removal of spent nuclear fuel from decommissioned nuclear sites in areas with large populations and high seismic hazards.

Bates represents the 36th Senate District in the California Legislature, which covers South Orange County, North San Diego County, and Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton.

The shuttered San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) is located in Senator Bates’ district, and the currently operating Diablo Canyon Power Plant is located in Senator Monning’s district.

Their resolution urges the passage of Congressman Mike Levin’s (D-CA, 49th) Spent Fuel Prioritization Act of 2019 (H.R. 2995), which would expedite the removal of California’s nuclear waste to safer locations.

H.R. 2995 is currently in the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee.

“California has waited for years for the federal government to do its job and help move the state’s nuclear waste away from densely populated and environmentally sensitive areas,” Bates said. “The Legislature must add its voice for action, and I’m pleased to partner with Senator Bill Monning to urge passage of pending legislation Dana Point Times August 16-22, 2019

In 2016, Sen. Bates authored Senate Joint Resolution 23 that urged the passage of a similar federal bill called the Interim Consolidated Storage Act (H.R. 4745).

Former Congressman Darrell Issa (R-CA, 49th) supported H.R. 4745, but it did not advance beyond the U.S. House.

The State Senate will consider SJR 11 before it adjourns for the year on September 13.

Richard Birt to Host South Orange County Gem and Mineral Society Presentation Richard Birt, geologist and rockhound enthusiast, will be hosting a Classic California Rockhounding Sites presentation at the San Clemente Community Center on Wednesday, August 21. Birt’s presentation comes as part of the monthly South Orange County Gem and Mineral Society meeting, also held in San Clemente.

As an active gem and mineral collector, Birt will be bringing several rock and mineral samples as part of the presentation.

The samples include rocks he has collected over his 50-year career, as well as from some of his recent trips and excavations.

According to the press release, Birt will be “including geodes and fire agate from Wiley Well, lapis lazuli from Mount Baldy, petrified wood from Boron Dry Lake and blue agate from Acton” in his presentation.

All of these rocks and minerals will be open to the public as observations.

Birt’s presentation will be followed with refreshments and snacks for the audience, as well as an opportunity to meet and speak with society members. A raffle will also be held after the presentation.

The Gem and Mineral Society meetings are held on a regular basis, every third

SHACC Launches Auction Fundraiser The Surfing Heritage & Culture Center (SHACC) is now holding its summer flash auction sale. The nonprofit organization, based in San Clemente, works to archive surf artifacts, surfboards, memorabilia, photography, video and scholarly works.

SHACC is auctioning off a week at the Four Season Aviara Residences in Carlsbad, which has an approximate value of $5,500. The opening bid begins at $500 for the locked-in dates of Sept. 7-14.

Summer Ends, but the Music Continues

T

his Sunday, August 18, from 3 to 6:30 p.m. at Sea Terrace Park, is the “End of Summer Luau” at Dana Point Concerts in the Park. It’s literally a rocking picnic with 5,000 of our neighbors and friends.

The festivities include performances by local band Tunnel Vision and Surf City All Stars, as well as an exciting “halftime” Polynesian dance show by Island Inspirations. There will be a special “Surf Safari” area with boards, local shops and surf vehicles on display. Eric Diamond will be painting a vintage board on site to raffle off at the end of the concert, as a fundraiser for Dana Point Surf Club. Music Preserves Foundation will have our “Jam Stand” info booth there, and a variety of local nonprofits including Monarch Beach Sunrise Rotary will be in attendance. This iconic event is a major part of Dana Point’s musical identity, and I’m so grateful for it.

Playing the concert over the years with my band, Small World, is on my life’s highlight reel, for sure.

Every week when I read the Dana Point Times, I get more and more incensed and frustrated that some of our political representatives, wherever they are serving (local, state, federal), seem to not represent their constituents, but are serving themselves. They are always trying to circumvent, hide, and/or distort issues.

In her letter to the editor, Michelle Brough discusses the problems that have arisen for her husband (73rd District Assemblymember Bill Brough) because of his support of an audit of the Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA)—commonly known as the Toll Roads. Her article dis-

I’m talking here about the bill that Assemblymember Bill Brough made to audit the TCA. It is time for everyone to hold our elected representatives (or who get appointed) accountable. It is deplorable what has happened to the Brough family. Let’s hear from Orange County Supervisor Lisa Bartlett, or some of the councilmembers, why they do not wish to be audited. Let’s hear about the relationships that these people have with the TCA and other agen-

A special shout-out and job well done to Rachel Kupfer-Weinstein. On August 4, I attended her Art Community Showcase, which was part of her Girl Scout Gold Award project. The Gold Award is the Girl Scouts’ equivalent to an Eagle Scout.

Rachel developed a week of arts workshops for kids, each day having a different discipline. It was taught by Rachel and her friends from South Orange County School of the Arts, and the students who participated performed pieces they worked on at the workshops at San Juan Capistrano Community Center.

ana Hills football’s mantra for the 2019 season is keep everything “above the line.”

It’s a phrase assistant head coach and offensive coordinator Curtis R. Madden II adopted and presented to the team from former Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer’s book, Above the Line: Lessons in Leadership and Life from a Championship Season.

The phrase applies two-fold to the Dolphins.

On the scoreboard, Dana Hills is looking to stay above the .500 line. The Dolphins pushed above .500 for the first time at any point in a season since 2013 by winning two of their first three games last season.

However, Dana Hills’ shutout win over Saddleback for its second win of the season was the high point of 2018, as the team lost its final seven games.

The 2013 Dolphins were the last Dana Hills team to finish the regular season at .500 (5-5) and the last to make the playoffs.

The Dolphins have won just seven games in the past five seasons. Their last winning season came in 2009.

In a push to change those fortunes and the culture that has beset Dana Hills football, the coaching staff and players are applying the phrase as Meyer put it in his book.

“You look at chipping on another guy,” Dana Hills coach Phil Skinner said, “blaming this, blaming that, losing team continuity; that’s below-the-line behavior. We talk about above-the-line behavior—what would be the right thing to do and raise your teammate up?”

Skinner said he and his staff have taken that to heart in the way they approach games and practice. The staff has some new additions, but it also has some much-needed consistency at the top with assistants and coordinators.

“We did a lot of self-examination. With

Skinner saw it first-hand after he joined the school as an offensive line coach in 2007.

Dana Hills went from a 1-8-1 season in 2007 to a 5-5 year in 2008 and then to a 9-3 season in 2009.

“We’ve had good times way back when,” Skinner said. “We’ve had a rough stretch.

Before the good times, they had a long rough go, too. There’s always that community mentality saying that ‘Dana Hills, they’re not going to be very good.’ There would always be influences as to why they can’t. We’re trying to get them to believe why they can.

That’s the cultural shift.”

The cultural shift is beginning to take shape.

It’s starting with consistency among the coaches, specifically coordinators, and some success in summer 7-on-7 passing leagues.

The coaches are strong on schemes and earnest in their belief of the players, and that has filtered down to the players.

(Continued) “There’s confidence in the players and coaching staff,” senior defensive end Liam Boersma said. “Last year, we had a lot of instability. This year, we seem to be a lot more connected and locked in. There’s a lot more brotherhood. We trust each other more than ever.”

The brotherhood is echoed by Boersma’s teammates and manifested by a noticeable energy in practices.

“I think we are coming together as a whole,” senior quarterback Zackary Saavedra said. “Last year, we were kind of playing individually. We had those skilled players, but we weren’t playing as a whole team.

We’re only as strong as our weakest link.”

Skill on Offense The team’s skill players built their brotherhood and gained more belief through a bevy of seven-on-seven competitions over the offseason.

Seven-on-seven is essentially two-hand touch football without any of the linemen.

It can be a tricky way to judge a team, because the games lack the sport’s trademark physicality, and any coach will tell you how important linemen are to a team’s success.

However, it was essential in building confidence of a team with plenty to offer in the outside positions.

“Sure, its 7-on-7,” Skinner said. “It’s not really football; it’s not Friday night games. At the same time, they are fully competitive against

other great high schools. They beat Servite.

They beat Villa Park. They’ve beat pretty good football teams in 7-on-7. Our skill kids have had that taste that they can (succeed).”

Skinner said of the 63 seven-on-seven games the Dolphins played over the offseason, they won 56 of them.

That is a tribute to the growth of Saavedra at quarterback, as well as the stable of weapons at his disposal.

“He’s taken a huge step forward as a leader,” Madden said of Saavedra. “We did seven-on-seven quite a lot this year and did quite a lot of classroom work teaching them better tools with how to read the defenses pre-snap and post-snap, giving them concepts that are very easy to fit their skill set.

He’s really taken charge.”

Dana Hills has plenty of speed on the outside in players such as juniors Noah Simpson, Kellen McGrath and Seth Lyon and senior Trevor Gartlan. Skinner said Simpson will get the ball in a variety of ways, and Gartlan is a speedster at running back.

The receivers also add sophomore James Allemann, who has the height at 6-foot-4 to be a potential impact player now and in the future.

While they don’t get to play in the sevenon-seven with the rest, the Dolphins have two anchors on either side of the offensive line in seniors Tanner Vallejo and Aidan Pierce. Vallejo is a returning leader up front, and Pierce is a transfer from San Juan Hills

Allemann has stood out early in camp for Dana Hills, and it’s easy to see why.

As a 6-foot-4 sophomore, Allemann knows how to use his height and length to get the ball at its highest point.

Allemann will be a go-to receiver for the Dolphins and an impact player.

Gartlan is one of the fastest Dolphins on the field.

Gartlan will factor as the primary running back for Dana Hills after being the No. 2 rusher for the Dolphins last season. Another Dana Hills player going both ways, Gartlan will take snaps at outside linebacker on defense.

Lyon is an all-around player for the Dolphins. He will line up part-time on defense, and his arm may even get some use in a quarterback package. Lyon will also see time on special teams. Lyon will primarily line up as a receiver. One way or another, Lyon will get involved.

Pierce is a valuable addition to the Dana Hills offensive line. He is a transfer from San Juan Hills and brings size at 6-foot-5 and 235 pounds, skills already honed and a ready knowledge of the Sea View League. Pierce has already taken on a leadership role early on.

who has come in to take on a leadership role, as well.

Skinner believes his group will be able to spread the ball around with the passing game, and the line will be relied on to protect the quarterback and take advantage of a light front with the running game.

Disruptive Defense The Dana Hills defense will benefit from a second year of defensive coordinator Brad Carter.

“We will have a lot of movement on the front,” Skinner said. “Coach Carter has really stepped up his game, especially with his stunts up front. You’ve got a player like Liam (Boersma) and a lot of the linemen and

linebackers—you have to create chaos on the offensive line, cause disruption.”

The focal point on the defensive front will be Boersma. The defensive end was a bright spot for Dana Hills as a junior as he set the team records in tackles for loss, blocked kicks, blocked passes and sacks. With 25 pounds of muscle added to his 6-foot-4 frame, Boersma will be vital to the Dolphins’ efforts.

Skinner described his defense as full of speed and “pretty good hitters.”

Senior linebacker Sam Shultz may be the biggest hitter of the bunch. Shultz led Dana Hills in tackles last season.

Players including Zackary Saavedra at safety, Lukas Saavedra at defensive back and Simpson at safety will play both ways for

the Dolphins, again showcasing a stable of athleticism.

“We like to be platooned as much as possible,” Skinner said, “but the bottom line is, I learned a long time ago if you see some of your best players standing on the sideline next to you, you’re a terrible coach.”

Pushing Forward Dana Hills has the athleticism, has embraced the new approach and gained the belief. With the schedule ahead of them, the Dolphins have set their goals, and they’re aiming for the playoffs.

“We want to take this season deeper than the 10 games as we have them,” Skinner said. “It’s because the kids finally understand

and believe that they can do it.”

There are three teams with new coaches in Dana Hills’ nonleague schedule and plenty of teams dealing with the same roster numbers as the Dolphins. The top teams of the Sea View League—Aliso Niguel and San Juan Hills—may be out of reach, but Dana Hills is in the same boat with Laguna Hills and Trabuco Hills.

For Skinner, it’s all about mentality. The Dolphins have a manageable schedule, but in a building process, adversity is still going to arrive.

“There’s going to be hard times,” Skinner said, “but we cannot have below-the-line thinking. We have to have above-the line thinking, rise above and prevail.”

Boersma was a force last season on the edge. Boersma set the team records in tackles for loss, blocked kicks, blocked passes and sacks. He should be even more of a threat with 25 pounds of muscle added to his 6-foot-4 frame. Boersma will also catch passes on offense.

Saavedra was described as a “light-’em-up type of kid” on defense by Coach Phil Skinner. Saavedra is a strong athlete that grew in height and weight over the offseason and will play both ways for the Dolphins. Saavedra will show off a strong receiverpasser connection with his brother Zackary.

Saavedra will be in the middle of things on both sides of the ball. Saavedra is a key component of the secondary and the returning starting quarterback. Coach Skinner said Zackary “plays quarterback from a hitting standpoint.” Saavedra said he embraced his role as a leader this offseason.

Shultz led the Dana Hills defense in tackles last season with 67 solo tackles and 90 total. Shultz isn’t the biggest linebacker at 5-foot-10, 155 pounds, but Coach Skinner called him the biggest hitter on the team. Shultz fills in on run defense with a forward and hard style.

Simpson will be all over the field for Dana Hills this season. Coach Skinner called him the team’s best allaround athlete. Simpson will use his speed in the secondary, and he’ll also be used in a variety of ways on offense.

Simpson takes on the role as a possession receiver.

Season Outlook: Dana Hills and Los Amigos will come into this season opener with plenty of motivation.

Both teams will be looking to bounce back after disappointing 2018 campaigns. Dana Hills also will look to avenge a tight loss last year, but the Lobos will have a more emotional push.

Los Amigos’ previous head coach of 11 seasons, Carl Agnew, resigned at the end of last season. Defensive coordinator Harold McDowell was hired to take over in February, but then in April, McDowell suddenly passed away.

Former Lobo quarterback Maopu Tuato is now coach and has installed a spread offense.

Season Outlook: After posting its best record since 2010 and recording its best playoff performance since 2012, Northwood is now on its third coach since 2014.

Paige Nobles takes over after two seasons as special teams coordinator, defensive line coach and running backs coach under former coach Pete Mitchell.

Northwood could be poised to repeat or further its success from last season with major returners in place.

Senior quarterback Jaden Piazza returns after throwing for 1,341 yards and 14 touchdowns and leading the team in rushing with 316 yards. Top receiver Travis Arena returns, as well as top tackler Xavier Cousar.

Season Outlook: To say that Saddleback struggled to open last season may even be underselling it.

The Roadrunners, then in their first season under Coach Nick Diulio, were shut out in six of the team’s first eight games and overall were outscored by a combined total of 341-14 in those eight games, including a 46-0 win by Dana Hills.

Last season’s game unfortunately marked a high point for Dana Hills, as the Dolphins lost their remaining seven games.

Saddleback ended last season on a high note with back-to-back wins and hopes to ride that momentum and coaching consistency into this season.

Season Outlook: Laguna Beach is looking to build off one of the better seasons in school history.

The Breakers won 10 games for just the fifth time in the school’s 85-year history and for the first time since 2012. Laguna Beach also made its deepest playoff run since 2011, with a push to the Division 12 semifinals.

The Breakers lose some top skill players in their leading rushers and receivers, but the Laguna Beach offense will be anchored by senior quarterback AJ Johnson. Last season, Johnson threw often and completed 56% of his passes for 3,246 yards and 42 touchdowns.

Season Outlook: Irvine finished second in the Pacific Coast League last season and advanced to the second round of the Division 11 playoffs, but the Vaqueros find themselves under new leadership in 2019.

Tom Ricci, former Savanna head coach, signed on to coach his alma mater in February. Ricci had coached under previous Irvine coach Erik Terry, and Ricci played for the coach that preceded Terry’s nine-year tenure: Vaquero legend Terry Henigan, in 1988.

Irvine has holes to fill, as the Vaqueros’ starting quarterback, leading rushers, leading receiver and leading tacklers all graduated. No. 2 receiver Jacob Sears returns as a senior.

Season Outlook: When Ocean View won last year, it won big. The Seahawks won by no fewer than 28 points and won by an average of 31 points per game, including their lone shutout against Dana Hills. It was a high-water mark for the program.

Ocean View’s only losses came to Laguna Beach, which forced a threeway tie for the Pac 4 League title, and to Irvine in the first round of the Division 11 playoffs.

However, going into 2019, the Seahawks will be hard-pressed to replicate that success. Ocean View lost its starting quarterback, top four rushers and top receiver to graduation.

Season Outlook: Laguna Hills finished right in the middle of the Sea View League with big wins over the bottom two, Dana Hills and Trabuco Hills, and big losses to the top two, Aliso Niguel and San Juan Hills.

While overall their record wasn’t great, the Hawks can be optimistic with the league success achieved with eight sophomore starters, three of whom earned all-league honors.

One of those sophomores was leading rusher Mitch Leigber. Leigber ran for 616 yards and three touchdowns and had three 100-yard games, including 223 yards against Trabuco Hills.

Laguna Hills has already lost two starting linebackers to injury.

Season Outlook: Trabuco Hills is beginning a new era. Again.

Mark Nolan is the new coach of the Mustangs and is the fourth new coach at Trabuco Hills in six seasons.

Nolan replaces John Abdelnor, who posted three straight 3-8 seasons.

This is Nolan’s first California high school job after coaching in Arizona and Colorado.

Nolan will have a fresh team to work with after graduation of the starting quarterback and leading rusher. Top receiver Jake Naso and leading tackler Chris Crow return.

Naso had 21 receptions for 472 yards and five TDs, and Crow led with 41 total tackles.

Season Outlook: Aliso Niguel finished in second place in the Sea View League last season and advanced to the second round of the Division 9 playoffs.

Although the Wolverines lose their starting quarterback and leading tackler, Aliso Niguel still has major skill players returning for a run at the Division 8 playoffs.

Aliso Niguel’s top returning skill player is senior Eduardo Mayen.

Mayen led the Wolverines in rushing and all-purpose yards and was the Sea View League’s special teams player of the year.

Senior Caleb Peterson and junior Max Carvalho also return as top receivers. Kyle Thomas is the top returning tackler.

Season Outlook: Reigning Sea View League champion San Juan Hills is the early favorite to top the grouping once again.

The Stallions won all four league contests by an average margin of 40 points and posted back-to-back shutouts against Aliso Niguel and Dana Hills. San Juan Hills will be tested in nonleague and will use league play to gain momentum for a potential run in Division 3.

Joey Hobert is the all-everything player for the Stallions and is the reigning league MVP. Hobert runs, receives, kicks, plays defense and occasionally takes snaps at quarterback.

San Juan Hills also returns starting quarterback Hudson Jones.

At the Movies: ‘The Peanut Butter Falcon’ is a Wholesome Treat

yler Nilson and Michael Schwartz’s The Peanut Butter Falcon is not only one of the most wholesome movies of the year, it’s also one of the most wholesome backstories behind the production.

Nearly five years ago, Nilson and Schwartz met Zack Gottsagen, an aspiring young actor with Down syndrome, who told them he always wished he could star in his own movies. Charmed and won over, the two men took a break from their day jobs to write a script with Gottsagen in mind, and this month we get the final result.

In the backwoods of North Carolina, Zack (Gottsagen) runs away from the nursing home he’s been living in for two years, as he feels isolated and misunderstood in the institution. He dreams of being a pro wrestler, like local celebrity Saltwater Redneck (Thomas Haden Church).

During his journey across state to find Saltwater, Zack befriends Tyler (Shia LaBeouf), a nomad fisherman with a troubled past. And his nursing adviser, Eleanor (Dakota Johnson), joins the adventure along the way.

Bruce Dern and John Hawkes co-star. Nilson and Schwartz loosely based The Peanut Butter Falcon on the traditional Huckleberry Finn tale of two misfits becoming friends on a personal quest. The two friends’ debut as filmmakers is bittersweet and lovely. They clearly have a lot of respect and care for Gottsagen’s potential. The actor himself is also pretty good as a first-time lead and plays off LaBeouf with natural chemistry. Though the final scene feels a bit abrupt, everything else in Falcon straddles the line between fairytale and realistic just enough for a quaint late-summer release. DP danapointtimes.com

illy Davis Jr. and Marilyn McCoo certainly have a way of making marriage seem easy.

“Billy’s an easy person to get along with for the most part,” McCoo said, before teasing, “Unless I’m cooking, and then I throw him out of the kitchen.”

“I have to stay out of the kitchen,” Davis concurred, while the two shared a laugh.

The seven-time, Grammy Award-winning duo have such a rapport and playful banter that it’s no wonder how their marriage has been able to last 50 years in an industry that oftentimes isn’t kind to celebrity couples.

But Davis and McCoo acknowledge—as almost anyone married will also tell you— there are challenges to every relationship, including their own. The two shared as much in their 2004 book, Up, Up, and Away, which shares its name with the 1967 hit song performed by their group, The 5th Dimension.

While speaking by phone with the Dana Point Times, Davis and McCoo laughed a lot as they spoke about their music and marriage, which turned 50 last month.

Though the two are able to joke about it now, they note how they used to have it out quite a bit in the beginning of their relationship.

“When we first started going together, we used to fight all the time,” McCoo said with a chuckle. “We fought all the time, because we’ve both been very outspoken about what we think.”

One piece of advice McCoo said she likes to give those seeking advice before getting married: “You (have to) like the person that you’re going to marry.”

Asked what they like about each other, Davis was quick to point out that they have a lot in common, especially music.

“We both love our music; we both love joking and jiving. We just connect,” he said before repeating himself for emphasis.

“We just connect.”

For McCoo, what she’s always liked about Davis is that he’s a “good human being.”

“I liked that about him before I fell in love with him,” she said. “He’s a good man, and another thing that I found very special is he gets along with my family.”

McCoo and Davis first met in 1965, when the R&B and soul group The 5th Dimension—formerly known as the Versatiles—was formed.

By 1969, Davis and McCoo were married. And in 1975, the two parted ways with The 5th Dimension, wanting to embark on solo careers. Not wanting to be apart, however, the two continued working together as a duo.

work well together throughout the years, in part, McCoo said, because they both deeply care about their sound and harmonies on stage.

“Everything that we do, we want to make it the best it can be, and fortunately we both approach our music and our work in the same way,” she said, adding: “If we’re going to sing these songs, we want the harmonies to be right.”

Their harmonies will be on full display later this month when they visit The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano as part of their recent shows, which is also titled “Up, Up, and Away.”

Davis and McCoo are looking to “bring back wonderful memories” for the audience by performing several of their hits, including “You Don’t Have to be a Star (to be in My Show),” for which they earned their seventh Grammy in 1977.

The duo also plans to perform tributes to musical acts from the same era.

“So we do those (hit) songs, but we also do songs that reflect on our times and music that we’ve always enjoyed—artists that are from a similar time that we were,” McCoo said, also noting that the show will incorporate a bit of blues in addition to pop and R&B. “So we have a nice mixture of music in our show.”

Tickets to see Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. at The Coach House on Saturday, Aug. 24, are $50. Doors open at 6 p.m., with the show scheduled to start at 8 p.m.

24-Hour Support Shootout for Soldiers 24-hour charity lacrosse event returns to Dana Hills

S

hootout for Soldiers, a 24-hour charity lacrosse event that benefits veterans and active-duty military, held its fifth annual California event on Saturday, Aug. 10 at Dana Hills High School.

The event ran from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. on Sunday with 23 one-hour lacrosse games, as well as a skills clinic and the event’s first veteran’s ceremony preceding the veteran and active-duty military game.

The California event, returning to Dana Hills for the fourth time after a one-year hiatus for field renovation last year, raised nearly $40,000. The event has raised more than $4 million in its history across the country.

“For me, it’s the vets,” event organizer Michelle Hankin said of what keeps this event going strong. “It’s the presence of these young men and women that come out and do this work. We stay engaged with them, and we promote it to these young people so they understand they get to play this game because of these people.”

The event helps support veterans and wounded veterans transitioning back into society. The event supports organizations such as Wounded Warrior Foundation Freedom Station, which houses veterans free for a year and retrains them and gives them skills.

Dana Wharf Fish Report Weather cools down, but bass still biting

ater conditions slowed down the action a bit, but the bass were still biting at Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching.

In his weekly report, Captain Brian Woolley said the water had “greened up a bit,” and the water temperature dipped a little to 66-69 degrees. Bass were still the focal point this week, even though the catches

Shootout for Soldiers began in Baltimore in 2012, when a group of high school students looked to break a world record.

They played the longest continuous game of lacrosse and raised more than $100,000 in the initial event.

The California event brought out players of all types and backgrounds, includ-

ing Vietnam veteran and goalie Carey Mangold, 71, of Huntington Beach.

“In my opinion, it’s for the real heroes,” Mangold said of the event. “The guys that didn’t come back, the guys that came back with parts missing, the guys that came back mentally messed up.”

Mangold has played lacrosse since he

was 8 years old, and after his military service, he co-founded the San Diego State lacrosse program. Mangold plays only twice a year now—in the San Diego State alumni game and Shootout for Soldiers.

Mangold took a wicked shot off the hand, but he shook it off and plans to return next year. DP

Woolley said that making adjustments is part of the program, and the fleet moved on a little more to the hard-bottom areas and added rockfish to the week’s numbers.

Conditions can change quickly, and the water should be back to its summer form in no time.

At Catalina Island, the yellowtail action also slowed down a bit. Dana Wharf’s newest charter addition, the LexSea, had a strong midweek showing with yellowtails from 12 to 20 pounds.

Lynne M. Geyser Born in Queens, NY in 1938, Lynne moved to Los Angeles in 1963.

She graduated from Queens College and UCLA Law School with a young son.

She was one of few women to practice law at the time and was the first woman to graduate at the top of her class. Lynne went on to practice with prestigious firms and in the late 70’s she opened up a solo legal practice in San Clemente.

Lynne often donating her services to those who couldn’t afford her help.

Lynne loved her family, painting, exotic places, food, languages, art and wild animals, especially elephants. She could be counted on to bring bright colors, a sharp sense of humor, good conversation and much love. Lynne was adventurous, an ardent supporter of the arts and many charities and lived life to the fullest. She loved unconditionally and gave everything she could to family and friends.

She is survived by one son, Russell and his wife Zina, her three grandchildren (Lea, Mason and Alexa), her aunt Lillian, her half-sister Lisa, and many cousins.

A celebration of life will be held on September 8th at 11 am at the San Clemente Casino. Bright colored attire is requested.

RIP: Chris McElroy Influential San Clemente shaper remembered for the talented craftsman and troubled soul he was

I

n the heyday of San Clemente’s Surf Ghetto, shaper Chris McElroy was the undisputed man. Calle de Los Molinos was his kingdom. He was the guy making local heroes such as Christian Fletcher and Dino Andino the boards that sent them into the stratosphere. He took Dino to his first NSSA contest when he was 11.

He shaped Mitch Colapinto’s first thruster.

A creative force, an artist, craftsman, mentor and troubled soul, McElroy and his famous air guitar have now slipped into legend.

Throughout the ’80s and into the ’90s, McElroy’s shapes could be found everywhere. The walls of his shaping bay were famously plastered with photos ripped out from the magazines. From covers of Christian boosting to Dino’s full-rail speed carves, at a moment in time when surfing was progressing seemingly every day, it was McElroy who was providing the spaceships for all of the explorations. And while he relished in the international exposure, Trestles and the hut at Uppers were his zones of choice—and he got whatever wave he wanted in the ultra-competitive lineup.

Not only was McElroy building great boards, but he also took young shapers such as Matt Biolos and Timmy Patterson under his wing. In its raw, wild radicalness, McElroy embodied the era.

“He carried himself like a bona fide surf star,” Biolos wrote in a touching remembrance on Instagram. “He partied like a rock star and had the best ‘air guitar’ I ever saw, but he could play as well. He always had an entourage of sorts. He was fun. He’d party with us, ask us questions, let us hang out upstairs in the Hydro Glass den of decadence. He was inclusive. He’d pay me to paint his team riders boards . . . and tease the crap out of me for ‘drawing skulls and devil crap on my boards!’ In the bustling, surfboard-building ghetto, we all wanted to be him. He was the archetype.”

Fading from the scene in the late ’90s, he spent some years living down around Todos Santos in Baja, Mexico.

“That rock-star lifestyle caught up to him. More parties than surfing. More parties than working. In the end, the fall was radical. Yet he somehow kept his magnetic Dana Point Times August 16-22, 2019

and hypnotic character for decades,” continued Biolos. “Through it all, he could still hold court. Even when teetering on homelessness, or holed up in Cabo, there was still some magic in the original ‘Mac.’ ” Recently, McElroy, whose health had been in decline after years of hard living, had plugged himself back into the Surf Ghetto scene. The guys that he helped build were all too happy to help him try and get back on his feet. It’s a tight community, and for those on the inside, the love is unconditional.

“We got him to almost finish a couple of shapes for Dino, but he just couldn’t physically do it,” said Damien Brawner.

For all of his challenges during the

last few years of his life, all the shapers and glassers in the Surf Ghetto continued to do what they could for him. Dino remained close with him to the end.

“You brought so much joy, love, and laughter into all of our lives! I’m grateful I got to say I love you one last time before you left us,” Cole Simler wrote on Instagram. “I wish you could have stuck around a little longer. Rest in peace. Love you, my friend!”

“We learned so much from you. We learned what to do. We learned what not to do,” Biolos wrote.“For myself, Timmy Patterson and many others in our board building community, perhaps that’s your biggest lesson given. Sleep well, Chris.

hen you grow up in a family with five kids, you have to learn to roll with things. Few groms in this area have a deeper appreciation for this than 6-year-old Peeta Kenworthy from Dana Point.

When Peeta was just a wee babe, she had a bit of a health scare, contracting infant botulism. But she doesn’t let much slow her down, and while she might have stressed out her folks, she was on the mend in no time. Five years down the track, and she’s rolling.

Peeta’s big sister, Bella, has been blazing the trail for the Kenworthy squad, winning NSSA surf events and crushing it in the skate world. But little sis is right there behind her.

Peeta’s pretty much been on a surfboard and skateboard all her life—and it shows.

She already rips at the skatepark, drawing clean, stylish lines, and she’s even got her airs working.

In the water, whether she’s standing up on a boogie board or styling with her old man at Doheny, Peeta is perfectly comfortable and happy.

Most recently, Peeta joined her family for some vacation and surf time over in Hawaii, where she got to enjoy the warm, tropical waters, rip with her brothers and sisters and make some new friends. DP
