Five things Dana Point should know this week City Unclear on Next Steps After Measure H Passage

THE LATEST: Last week, more than 10,000 Dana Point residents cast their votes to decide which measure they wanted to see reside over development in the city. Now, residents are asking what happens next in the city regarding that vote.

Currently, votes are still being counted from mail-in votes, but the results have only changed slightly. As of Thursday morning, there were 6,071 (58.7 percent) votes in favor of the 2015 Town Center Initiative (Measure H) and 6,069 (58.8 percent) votes against the Town Center and Public Parking Improvement Measure (Measure I).

Multiple city officials declined to go on the record to state what the next steps for the city would be as well as their timelines.

Dana Point Mayor John Tomlinson only sent over his previous statement (printed in the Dana Point Times last week) when asked specific questions about the implementation and impacts of Measure H. City Manager Doug Chotkevys stated “nothing has changed” since the mayor’s last statement, and they are waiting until the Registrar confirms the vote.

Two supporters of Measure H, Debra Lewis and Sandie Iverson, said the next step would be to wait for the official election results to be announced, then the Orange County Registrar of Voters will send the city certification of the election results.

“They must do this no later than the fourth Friday after the election,” Lewis said.

Once the city receives the certification, they must declare the vote during a Council meeting. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, June 21, but the results may not be official by then.

Lewis said the Council could call a special meeting to do so, and would only need to post notice 24 hours before the meeting.

The measure must then make its way to the California Coastal Commission for approval. Previously, city officials have said requests to the Commission could be a lengthy process, and in the past has taken up to a year or longer.

Iverson and Lewis don’t believe the process will take too long because they say the measure is de minimis, which means minimal changes are marked on the code that was previously approved by the Commission.

The Shwack Helps Raise Funds for Local School THE LATEST: During the month of May, The Shwack Bar & Grill held a fundraiser for Broderick Montessori and collected a total of $1,529.

During a chamber meeting, Broderick Montessori Administrator Palin Harrington and Devin Sinner, The Shwack general manager, met and discussed the school in need of a fundraiser due to financial distress.

“We started talking about it, and told our families about the fundraiser and people in town started to hear about it,” Harrington said. “It was awesome.”

On Mondays in May, The Shwack donated 15 percent of proceeds that came in and donated it to the school.

“When we found out Broderick was in need of help, holding a fundraiser at Shwack seemed like a no brainer,” said Sinner.

Broderick Montessori is a preschool through third grade elementary school that’s located off Del Prado. “We’re so thankful and grateful they could raise that amount of money,” Harrington said. “It was the difference of making payroll for

the end of the year.”

The Shwack has held fundraisers before for Capo Valley Christian School, Dana Hills Instrumental Music Foundation and more.

Sinner said Max Fisher, the proprietor of The Shwack, is a Dana Hills High School Graduate and likes to support local charities and educational institutions.

Construction Plans Cause Disagreement with Planning Commission Members THE LATEST: Two permit applications created some discussion, and some disagreement, during the Planning Commission meeting on Monday night due to parking and ocean views.

The first project, which was tabled for further discussion with the architect, is the construction of two detached units on each of two contiguous sites off of Via Verde.

Some members of the Commission were not in favor of the project due to the parking that was planned—in the plan there were, in total, 20 bedrooms, with 10 parking spots.

“Personally, I know it meets the code but I believe that the density is too high, with 20 bedrooms and not enough parking,” said Chairwoman April O’Connor.

“I can almost envision this as sober living homes, even though we can’t disallow that, it is a potential that I think we have to consider that this could very well turn into something way more than we’re anticipating and perhaps our code doesn’t neces-

Festivals in Dana Point Next Weekend THE LATEST: Next weekend, the city will be packed with events as the Doheny Surf Festival and the Orange County Food, Wine and Music Festival come to town.

The surf festival is a free event that will feature the Kona Brewing Liquid Aloha Lounges, surf demonstrations, surf legends, a museum exhibition craft and story times for the kids and more.

The event runs both June 25 and 26 from 9 a.m.-8 p.m.

The event will be at Doheny State Beach off of Dana Point Harbor Drive.

The Orange County Food, Wine and Music Festival will be on Saturday, June 25 from noon to 7 p.m.

There will be general admission and unlimited drink sampling tickets. There is also a VIP Grand Tasting ticket. More than 30 restaurants will be in attendance.

There will be 50 varieties of wine, 40 craft breweries and a number of craft brews.

‘Visit Dana Point’ Created to Boost Tourism THE LATEST: The new marketing organization, Visit Dana Point, was recently created by the Tourism Business Improvement District to attract tourists to town.

“Visit Dana Point intends to grow the local tourism industry through visitor attraction and retention, lodging offerings and meetings and groups initiatives,” a statement from Visit Dana Point said.

Dana Point Unveils New Open-Air Trolleys The white, blue and orange open-air trolleys will make their debut as the second season of the summer trolley service begins in Dana Point on Friday, June 17.

Before the big day though, city officials climbed aboard to see what the new vehicles looked like.

Inside, there are wooden benches, as well as a handicap accessible ramp.

The trolley service will continue throughout the summer until Labor Day. The schedule is set for seven days a week, and the hours will vary depending on the day of the week.

Throughout the day, the trolleys will make 20 different stops, each making a stop every 15 minutes.

City officials were excited to unveil the new vehicles, and think the season will be a successful one.

Jim Miller, owner of Coffee Importers, said he’s excited the trolley is back for a second year.

“I think it’s great for the community,” Miller said. “It’s an asset for parking as well.”

Cindy Monroe, co-owner of Luxe Restaurant & Martini Bar agreed.

“There’s an added fun factor to it since it’s open-air this year,” Monroe said.

The sides of the trolley can be removed to make them open-air. As of Wednesday, the sides were closed, but city officials said the sides would be removed in time for opening day.

making it one of the city’s most historic sites. Now, there are sliding doors that open up to Pacific Coast Highway, hardwood floors and a nautical theme to go with the cuisine.

“The bar here is where the original café was,” said Christina Grant. “We wanted to keep some of that feeling of the original building but also make it a bit more modern.”

The Grants wanted to open a restaurant together for a few years, and that dream was made possible earlier this year when plans to open the eatery began.

“My husband probably has wanted to open his own restaurant since he was 14,” Grant said.

She said Mike has worked in the restaurant business for multiple years and was ready to start his own business in the area.

“We looked around and said the city needs more options,” Grant said. “Plus, we’re from around here and love the area.”

Members of the city said they were excited for the restaurant to join the neighborhood.

The eatery currently is only serving dinner, but Grant said in about a week or so they will be opening for lunch.

The menu has everything from sandwiches, to salads, to rotisserie chicken and steak, and plenty of appetizers to choose from.

“My favorites are the pork belly bites and fava bean dip,” Grant said.

Grant said the whole menu is fresh and there is something for everyone at different prices.

INSPIRE — Independence for Needy Single Parents Instilled via a Responsible Education — gave four finalists $3,000 scholarships.

Those recipients included Ngan Dao, Katherine Wimber, Samantha Finks and Ashley Zieman. They each shared stories of overcoming abuse, economic hardships and various types of adversity.

Dana Point is just a sleepy little town. It will never be a Laguna Beach.

The plants they have put down the center of the street are too big and now we have no street parking. It also makes it hard to drive through town. It looks over-grown already, and what about the nice parades we had? It was such a nice sleepy town.

I understand we need a change, but bigger is not always better.

I agree with the letter posted in the June 10-16 issue titled "Poor State Of Affairs" After reading the current mayor’s response regarding the passing of measure H, I found myself feeling very disappointed and saddened that he was for larger projects in our area. I assumed after reading his views on the resident’s majority vote on H, he might be a developer or has newly moved to the area and just saw it as opportunity to change for the worst. I then revisited his bio to remind myself why I voted him in and learned again he has been a resident of Dana Point since the 1960s that graduated from Berkeley in economics and geography. This background told me he would be more responsible with our city’s development and changes, that he would hopefully not continue the massive changes that began in 1981 carving through the hillsides and changing the old charm of local shops and Spanish-style homes to a massive amount of Cape Codtype developments and rows of fast food Dana Point Times June 17-23, 2016

restaurants lining the Coast Highway.

I look at cities up north like Ventura, Santa Barbara, Camarillo and many others that have developments that match or complement the original charm of the area, and most important, showcase the largest asset... beautiful coastlines. They don't destroy the history that the original inhabitants built and developed the area with the same manner. San Clemente began like this when Ole Hanson fell in love with the Spanish city by the sea and developed the city to maintain the original charm that made him fall in love with it.

But if he could see the greed and selfish development destroying the once beautiful charming surf side city, he would be appalled. The outlet in San Clemente off Pico says it all; a massive structure that blocks the once beautiful view seen from the highway… whose bad idea or decision was this to even have built an outlet mall so close to the beach? Why would the city of San Clemente not do all they could to enhance the city’s most valuable assets: the beaches and coastline?

Dana Point Harbor has destroyed what could have been the most popular and lucrative stretch of coved beach in Southern California. Imagine what it could have been if not for the selfish greedy bad choices of development. If left alone as a park and beach with homes above on the cliffs and hotels along the outer portion, it would have been world-renowned and financially lucrative for all business and residents from tourism.

My uncle came to live in the Palisades in Capistrano Beach in the late ’30s from Greece's Mediterranean coast. He told my mother, who would later join him in 1947, that this area was so beautiful and reminded him of Greece and the Amalfi Coast.

As a young girl, she would walk down the steps from the hillside of Capo Beach from Camino Capistrano to the once-clubhouse and pier at Capo Beach and look in either direction to vast coastline and ask my uncle why he didn't pick Los Angeles— there is nothing around here. He would say, “That is the beauty of this area. If I wanted to be in the crowded city, I would live there, but this is paradise.” I am glad he didn't live to see the continued destruction of paradise.

Our elected officials should remember what this area was like if they grew up here, and others why they fell in love with it when they first came here. I was happy to hear 20 years ago the plans that would bring Coast Highway back to a two-lane highway and slow down the traffic, especially to bring the business back to Del Prado. But to hear the plans for massive mixed-use centers and strip malls throughout is not what will bring in "energy" to the town center. This type of thought from residents tells me that Dana Point and its slow comfortable atmosphere is not

for them and they should consider the faster pace of noise, trash and traffic of the now-plastic image of Huntington Beach or Newport Beach.

Tourism is Dana Point’s best financial strength and to keep tourism from being lost from around the world to our charming city, we need to demand responsible development that enhances what is our history and beauty. We cannot afford changes that make this area a haven for drunken boaters and timeshare visitors that destroy the area after the stop at Costco to eliminate the need to spend money at our local eateries or shops.

Instead, we should promote our existing small businesses and encourage the same to entice the more savvy travel looking for the beauty of the location and not the large storefronts that block the views or loft living that don't generate income to the surrounding area.

SEEKING HELP FOR THE ANIMALS SANDRA ACKERMAN, Volunteer at Pet Project Foundation

Kora was found by one of our Animal Control Officers after receiving multiple reports from residents of a very thin sickly coyote. When the officer arrived on the scene, she observed a cowering, frightened but very sweet female German shepherd that was too weak to stand. Her emaciated frame appeared to be the size of a coyote. She was brought back to our shelter and we named her Kora. Kora is suffering from inexcusable neglect. She is fighting chronic flea infestation and skin infection, which has led to hair loss; lack of an adequate diet, which has left her approximately 25-30 pounds underweight; and general muscle loss due to the extent of her poor care. Her recovery will be slow, but no doubt steady, as she has already shown a great recovery in her personality and an appetite here at the shelter. Once she is better, she will be put up for adoption into a loving home she has always deserved, but never experienced.

Working at the animal shelter is usually a wonderful experience—seeing children adopt their first animal, young families start out with two kittens or a senior who needs the love of a small lap dog. But on occasion we get an animal, usually a dog, that is so abused or neglected as to bring the Pet Project Foundation volunteers and staff to tears.

Top Student Commends Classmates on School Pride, Friendliness

Thank you, and congratulations.

Throughout my years at Dana Hills, I’ve come to appreciate the school because of its certain uniqueness. As a school stereotyped by its proximity to the beach and large number of blonde-haired students, I was surprised to find that Dana Hills breaks away from nearly every mold I expected it to fit into.

Unlike other schools, Dana students don’t just rush away from school at the sound of the bell. We hold pride in our dedication to bettering our class. Whether it be staying in the SOCSA halls until 10 at night, scrambling with ASU to create the perfect rally, or sweating with teammates in an effort to win the league title, Dana students are proud of the immense amount of time we have spent at our school.

Our students form bonds with our proctors, including Steve, who studies yearbooks so that he can remember the name of every student who walks through our halls, though I’m sure he didn’t need a yearbook to learn the names of some of our more prolific students.

Our athletes are also our scholars. Dana’s brightest minds not only focus on academics; they learn through sport and teamwork as well.

Our class is passionate about diversity and equality. During “What If” week, we celebrate each other’s adversity, coming together to garner strength and compassion for our fellow

students. Our multitude of clubs create an inclusive environment for everyone, regardless of race, sexuality, nerdiness or popularity.

This drive for equality stems from one the most fundamental, unique aspects of our school: Dana students are characterized by their kindness. John Stafford, our ASU president, exemplifies this quality. He is universally admired for his bright outlook, willingness to help, and inspiring generosity. The time and energy that John and many others have given towards helping their friends and their school does not alienate them; rather, they are rightfully praised for it.

These traits are found in such a beautiful and rare combination here. And, as someone who is friends with many San Clemente students, I can say assuredly that these qualities are quite specific to our school. It is for this reason that I hope all of you retain a deep sense of pride about the environment that nurtured you and helped you grow. You come from a school where boundaries are consistently broken, where expectations are defied, and where togetherness is at the heart of every achievement.

So, as we continue down our separate paths, I implore you all to remember the foundation that Dana Hills has provided you. We are forever students of a school that reshaped the traditional high school experience. Whether you are going to college, attending a trade school, working, or following your dream in another way, I hope you all feel proud of the place that you helped to create, because I know I will be so proud to see the ways in which the class of 2016 reshapes our world. hroughout history there’s always a person behind the scenes who lends an extra hand in helping the superstar or talent go into legacy. Elton John had Bernie Taupin, Robert De Niro had Martin Scorsese, and in literature, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Thomas Wolfe had their editor, Maxwell Perkins. This month a star-studded biopic on Perkins is in theaters called simply Genius. The film is directed by Richard Grandage and adapted by John Logan from A. Scott Berg’s book Editor of Genius.

In 1929, successful book editor Perkins (Colin Firth) for Charles Scribner’s Sons is given the first draft of Southern novelist Wolfe (Jude Law) right after his golden boy, Fitzgerald (Guy Pearce) has gotten a permanent case of writer’s block.

Though Wolfe is overly animated and exuberant in nature, the calm and collected Perkins finds a way to build a great working and friendly relationship. While Wolfe and Perkins find success, their relationships to their wives, Aline Bernstein (Nicole Kidman) and Louise Saunders (Laura Linney) falter.

Dominic West makes an appearance as Hemingway. Grandage’s and Logan’s Genius is a movie about writers for writers. The whole movie centers on the writing and editing process and is certainly to be enjoyed most by viewers who do that for a living. Firth’s performance is slightly stunted, but Law’s hammy and fun portrayal is a highlight. Though the direction and mood are lacking a bit, and we could’ve used more of Kidman and Linney, Genius should be of interest for literature and history fans. DP www.danapointtimes.com

ast weekend, passengers on the Dana Pride saw an extra animal during a whale watching trip they may not have expected: a great white shark.

Captain Tom White said the 12-foot shark was spotted about a mile and a half out of the harbor.

Clawson Breaks Down MLB Draft Process, Commitment to BYU

A

s the first day of the 2016 MLB Draft dragged on, David Clawson began to feel the stress pile up.

Following a senior season in which he hit .253 with five home runs and flashed exceptional skills behind the plate as the catcher for the Dana Hills High School baseball team, Clawson was a sought after commodity.

Clawson had been committed to BYU since his freshman season and the offers he was getting from a handful of professional teams in the second and third rounds of the draft were not enough to sway him to flip his commitment and go pro. Clawson stood firm and waited it out.

As a result, he slid all the way to the 34th round of the draft, where he was drafted by the New York Yankees on June 11.

The pick was merely ceremonial. After the first up and down day of the draft, Clawson had already made up his mind that he was going to honor his commitment to BYU, barring a last-minute over-slot offer.

said of the draft process. “I was bummed the first day but I decided I was not going to go (pro) after that day. I’m at peace with the choice.”

Clawson said the Milwaukee Brewers, Texas Rangers, New York Mets, Pittsburgh Pirates and Yankees were the teams that were in talks with him early in the draft process. There were offers made, but none of them matched the monetary figure Clawson had in his mind.

Clawson was an important member of the Dolphins lineup this season but where he shone brightest was at the catcher position.

Clawson helped lead a Dolphins pitching staff that held a collective 2.04 ERA. On April 13, Clawson caught junior pitcher Hans Crouse’s no-hitter against Tesoro.

Clawson proved to be sure-handed and flashed his strong arm all season. He committed only four errors in 30 games and threw out 11 of a possible 20 would-be base stealers.

The fact that more and more college players are being selected higher up in the draft, coupled with the experience he will gain while playing for BYU, has Clawson optimistic about reentering the draft process in 2018.

“I think BYU is a great place to grow as a person and I didn’t want to sign away my college experience,” Clawson said.

“I’m looking forward to being around like-minded teammates with the same qualities and standards and I want to bring a championship to BYU.” In other MLB Draft news: Dana Hills alum and current UCLA pitcher Grant Dyer was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the eighth round of the MLB Draft on June 10.

Dyer was the 227th overall pick.

Dyer, a junior, went 4-4 overall as a starter for the Bruins in 2016, posting a 4.50 ERA in 13 starts.

In 2015, Dyer was the Bruins primary setup man in the bullpen, but made the switch to starter at the start of the 2016 season. DP

Wolf Named to Freshman All-American Baseball Team After a historic freshman season playing baseball for Seattle University, Dana Point native Zach Wolf was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Division 1 Freshman All-American First Team.

Wolf, a pitcher, was one of just 16 freshmen selected to the team and one of only three relief pitchers named to the group.

Wolf was a revelation in the bullpen for Seattle University and was a key part of the pitching staff that led the Redhawks to their first-ever Western Athletic Conference title.

Wolf led the team with 12 saves, including a conference record 10 saves in league play, and posted a 2.27 ERA. Wolf struck out 28 batters in 27 appearances.

The NCBWA acknowledgement comes on the heels of Wolf being named a first-team All-WAC player and earning a spot on Collegiate Baseball’s Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American team.

Kristina is a proud ambassador of the sport and can’t wait to get her younger sister out on the waves with her. If this keeps up, her dream to pursue a surfing career should be well within her grasp. DP

ristina Hehl, 16, has been surfing on and off since age 9, but it wasn’t until middle school that she started surfing consistently. With no other surfers in her family, she found her way to the water on her own.

“I always thought surfing was the coolest thing in world. I just wanted to surf, so I got myself out in the water,” she said. Now she can’t imagine her life without it.

“I also met my closest friends through the sport, and I’m so grateful for that,” she said.

These days her daily routine consists of surfing early in the morning, going to school and then training and surfing again after her classes. Besides surfing you might find her skating, snowboarding, working out, drawing or painting.

une gloom and overcast skies did not hold anyone back as a talented group of young surfers returned to Salt Creek in Dana Point to fight for college, high school and middle school national titles at the NSSA National Interscholastic Championships from June 10-12.

With four national titles in team categories at stake and twelve individual national titles up for grabs, the waves did not disappoint. Neither did local surfers, who claimed several crowns.

The San Clemente High School surf team took second in the High School Varsity Team competition. Elijah Fox finished first in Varsity Men’s, with David Economos finishing third. Ocean Tsutsui represented with a fifth place finish in the High School Varsity Women’s competition, while Rachel Tilly took fourth place in Varsity Longboard.

Meanwhile, SCHS took the Junior Varsity national title led by Noah Hohenester, who also claimed his first national title in the Junior Varsity Men’s division. He was joined by teammates Davi Toledo (second place), Malik Schilling (fourth) and Jaric Fink (fifth).

Jared Bernier took fourth in Men’s Junior Varsity Longboard, also for San Clemente. And Alexa Ross came in second in the JV Women’s competition.

And, Shorecliffs Middle School’s surf team added to their impressive tally, collecting their thirteenth national title. DP

For Kristina, the competition was about resilience.
