Mana: The Power Within Thursday 1 October // 8pm //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

The atmosphere of Mana is earthy, emotive and deeply spiritual. Six dancers take the audience on a journey which begins hauntingly as they emerge from the darkened stage and draw closer and closer to the audience, who feel a presence and become mesmerised. Mana is the ultimate human life force – the stuff of which magic is made. Birmingham’s own ACE dance and music explore this deep and universal spirit in two themed dance pieces, using their own unique African-rooted style but fusing movement drawn from martial arts and an essence of flamenco and ballet. A Thousand Shepherds Inspired by two months spent in a monastery in India, Jose Agudo creates a visual celebration of discipline, commitment and dedication. Mana South African choreographer Vincent Mantsoe transports the audience back to ancient times, rooted heavily in the tradition of the Sangoma, evoking the spirit and earthy ambience of African dance and Shamanic traditions. Directed by Gail Parmel, Choreography by Jose Agudo and Vincent Mantsoe. Age guidance: 8yrs+ // Running time: 60 minutes plus interval FREE post-show talk: Thursday 1 October

UK PREMIERE Simone Aughterlony, Antonija Livingstone & Hahn Rowe //

Supernatural Friday 9 October // 8pm ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Supernatural takes place on a hot pink terrain under an unblinking fluorescent sky. With axes, wood, violin, electronics and the bare body, Simone Aughterlony, Antonija Livingstone and Hahn Rowe explore some vibrant matters in a performance at the intersection between choreography and performance art. Supernatural suggests a wilderness in which our binary perceptions – between nature and culture, between genders, between humans and things – can begin to unravel. This meditative environment is underpinned by a live improvised soundscape created and performed by acclaimed musician and multi-instrumentalist Hahn Rowe. Supernatural presents a unique, sensory treatment of materials – the vigour of the blade, the skin, the wood, the rope, the gaze which buzz together lovingly in a hot debate on the political economy of things. Contains nudity and scenes of a sexual nature. Age guidance: 18yrs+ ONLY // Running time: 60 minutes

Without Stars | There We Have Been Inspired by the book ‘Norwegian Wood’ by Haruki Murakami

Friday 16 – Saturday 17 October // 8pm /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Two lovers, two stories. Taking inspiration from Norwegian Wood, Haruki Murakami’s best-selling novel, this critically acclaimed double bill portrays two sides to a beautifully tender story of love, loss and loyalty. Without Stars shows the world through her eyes, as a quartet of dancers present a daringly intimate glimpse into a secluded world of fragile dependency. In There We Have Been his version of events unfolds; a complicated web of relationships – a lost friend, a fading love, a breath of life – holds him hostage, as he battles with his past and fights for the present. Presented as a mesmerising duet, the couple’s bond is explored in an incredible feat of stamina and choreographic invention, her body never once touching the floor throughout the piece. The inaugural winner of Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures Choreography Award, James Cousins was chosen for his “refreshing desire to entertain”. Like Bourne, Cousins knows how to communicate with an audience. Abstract yet utterly accessible, his choreography is dynamic, emotional and clever. There We Have Been was originally produced by Re:Bourne for the New Adventures Choreographer Award Showcase. There We Have Been and Without Stars were created with support from Arts Council England, Tezmae Charitable Trust, The Place and DanceEast.

Age guidance: 8yrs+ // Running time: 82 minutes including interval FREE post-show talk: Friday 16 October – in association with Birmingham Literary Festival. Explore how dance draws inspiration and influence from literature with poet and novelist Anna Lawren, choreographer James Cousins, chaired by DanceXchange’s Artistic Director David Massingham.

Arthur Pita //

The Little Match Girl Saturday 14 November // 2pm & 7pm //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Choreographer Arthur Pita’s hugely popular magical dance theatre show and festive family treat returns to Birmingham by popular demand. Based on Hans Christian Andersen’s classic story, this touching tale of an impoverished young street girl’s hopes and dreams is beautifully told through dance, song and original live music by Frank Moon. On an icy Christmas eve the Little Match Girl paces the emptying streets, shivering and desperate, trying to sell her matches. Cold, hungry and with just one final match flame to keep her warm, she sees a vision of her beloved grandmother, who guides her on a journey through the night sky to the moon, leaving her troubled life behind … on a clear night, if you look closely, you might see a shooting star, or is it a match burning brightly? Arthur Pita was nominated for an Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance for his choreography for Ballet Black – A Dream Within A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Linbury Studio Theatre, Royal Opera House. His celebrated repertoire of work includesthe multi award-winning adaptation of Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis. An Open Heart Productions and DanceEast co-production. Scottish Dance Theatre //

YAMA Thursday 26 – Friday 27 November // 8pm //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Following its acclaimed debut last year, choreographer Damien Jalet’s critically acclaimed YAMA returns as a brand new full length work. YAMA is an awe-inspiring piece that gathers energy as it grows. Jalet’s hypnotic choreography, and the tangled ensemble of exceptional dancers oscillates between a moving sculpture and a possession ritual. The incredible set, constructed by renowned visual artist Jim Hodges, suggests at times an ants‘ nest, a volcanic crater or a medicine wheel, pierced by a mysterious hole – perhaps a passage to another world. Damien Jalet has been responsible for some of the most revered productions of the last 10 years, including Babel (Laurence Olivier Award 2011) and work with Akram Khan, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and a radical re-staging of Bolero with Marina Abramovic at the Paris Opera. Scottish Dance Theatre is Scotland’s national contemporary dance company, acclaimed for collaborations with artists of outstanding calibre in the fields of music, design and the visual arts producing dance of the highest quality. WORLD PREMIERE Gary Clarke Company //

COAL Thursday 11 – Saturday 13 February 2016 // 8pm ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

“All of us owe the comparative decency to poor drudges underground, blackened to the eyes with their throats full of coal dust, driving their shovels forward with arms and belly muscles of steel” George Orwell (1934) Marking the 30th anniversary of the end of the 1984/5 British miners’ strike, award winning choreographer Gary Clarke proudly presents COAL, a riveting dance theatre show which takes an nostalgic look at the hard hitting realities of life at the coal face. Strong, powerful and emotive, COAL explores the darker underbelly of the mining industry unearthing the true nature and body wrecking demands of a working class industry now almost forgotten. COAL is co-commissioned by DanceXchange; Cast Doncaster; The Place; Dance City; Dance4 with Nottingham Playhouse; The Civic Barnsley; Yorkshire Dance, with additional funds from, The National Lottery through Arts Council England, Individual Giving through kick-starter and support from The Northern School of Contemporary Dance and The NUM.
