Welcome
to DanceXchange’s Spring/Summer 2014 brochure! //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
We’re delighted that International Dance Festival Birmingham (IDFB) is back for the fourth edition this year. One of Europe’s largest dance festivals, IDFB will present some of the finest dance performances from across the globe between 24 April – 25 May 2014. For this festival we’ve again worked with a number of venues in the city, and are presenting more shows than ever before, including a number of world premieres and unique collaborations. In particular we’re delighted to be working with Birmingham’s Ex Cathedra and Québécois dance company Cas Public on a special performance of Duruflé’s Requiem at Symphony Hall – Concert Dansé on Friday 2 May. This world premiere event will showcase the talents of over 50 performers, including guest dance artists Aakash Odedra and dancers from Birmingham Royal Ballet. As well as the performances in venues, look out for free dance events on the streets and public spaces of Birmingham, culminating in B-Town, our spectacular finale in Victoria Square in the last week of the festival. And there are lots of opportunities for you to get dancing too with our Paint The Town Red social dance events, or you could learn the traditional M¯ aori Haka and take part in a mass performance in Centenary Square.
Within this brochure you can read more about the programme of IDFB performances in Birmingham Hippodrome and DanceXchange’s studio theatre The Patrick Centre. To find out about the rest of the festival programme visit idfb.co.uk or follow us on Facebook or Twitter. This brochure also contains all the information about the wide range of dance classes we offer, in our dedicated professional dance studios. Whatever your experience, age or preferred dance style we’re sure we have something for you – and you can just drop in and try a class; no need to pre-book. We look forward to seeing you at DanceXchange soon!

Performance // Spring 2014 It’s that time again! Spring 2014 means International Dance Festival Birmingham and, to use this year’s festival tagline, ‘a world of dance in one city’. We’re on our fourth edition of the festival and this time we’ve got even more shows to tell you about. This brochure takes you through International Dance Festival Birmingham (IDFB) performances happening at DanceXchange’s venue The Patrick Centre, and those in Birmingham Hippodrome. For information about the IDFB performances happening in other venues check the website – idfb.co.uk The Patrick Centre programme starts with Birmingham’s Aakash Odedra Company, a highly acclaimed classical Indian Kathak performer, who will present the world premieres of two new solo works; Murmur, choreographed with Australian choreographer Lewis Major, which reflects on Aakash’s experience of dyslexia, and Inked, choreographed by Damien Jalet, which takes tattooing in Indian tribal culture as its starting point. An associate artist of dx, Mickael ‘Marso’ Riviere has created two new duets for IDFB. Match is a collaboration with Lebanese choreographer Guy Nader, whilst Halfway to the Other Side has been created with Egyptian choreographer Salah El Brogy. Expect a show full of virtuosic dance and an unique movement language fusing a variety of dance styles, including hip-hop and contemporary dance. Another DanceXchange Associate Artist, Luca Silvestrini, presents the work of his company Protein Dance in the next week of the festival. His new work, Border Tales, features live music, 04
text and incredible dance as Luca examines immigration, multiculturalism and exploding stereotypes in his usual thought-provoking and funny style – a must-see show during IDFB. The final week of the festival sees a first for IDFB in presenting work from Greece. Athens based Aerites, led by choreographer Patricia Apergis, present their new work Planites. Featuring five stunning male dancers, the show fuses physical contemporary dance with Greek folk and hip-hop, in a work which takes inspiration from modern cities, migration and integration. Over on the Birmingham Hippodrome stage, we have a spectacular line-up of some of the biggest names in world dance. Switzerland’s Alias, led by Brazilian choreographer Guilherme Botelho, present Sideways Rain, a hypnotic, mesmerising and stunningly beautiful work about the need for constant change and evolution. Next up; one of the hottest names in dance today, Kidd Pivot, led by Canadian choreographer Crystal Pite. This new work, Tempest Replica, takes Shakespeare’s The Tempest as the starting point for a haunting and utterly engrossing work. Sylvie Guillem, widely regarded as the most “… brilliant ballerina of her generation” (The Guardian), returns to IDFB following sold out performances in 2012. This time Sylvie performs a mixed programme with work from some of the greatest choreographers of her generation.
At a glance // IDFB at The Patrick Centre (p6-13) ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures need no introduction to Birmingham dance audiences and return with their acclaimed project, Lord of the Flies. Featuring young dancers from the West Midlands alongside the professional company, this is an innovative re-telling of William Golding’s classic tale. IDFB’s final week at Birmingham Hippodrome starts with the return of Breakin’ Convention; the international festival of hip-hop dance theatre. As usual, expect great dance – as well as the Birmingham Hippodrome foyers filled with DJs, MCs, workshops and demonstrations. Rounding-off our packed theatre programme we have Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui’s m¡longa. Featuring an amazing cast of international tango dancers and live musicians, Cherkaoui brings his own choreographic voice to one of the world’s most loved dance forms. And that’s the IDFB 2014 programme at DanceXchange and Birmingham Hippodrome. Check out the rest of the festival programme for more of the finest dance theatre, circus, ballet, hip-hop dance, world premieres and outdoor festival experiences – idfb.co.uk I hope to see you over the festival, and that you enjoy another tour of the world’s best dance performances from the comfort of your own fine city!

Aakash Odedra Company //
Murmur & Inked Tuesday 6 – Wednesday 7 May // 8pm ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
A new double bill from Aakash Odedra Company. Artistic Director Odedra is one of the most sought after British choreographer/dancers today. Originally trained in the South Asian styles of Kathak and Bharatanatyam, he has developed a distinctive movement style following intensive training with some of the most prestigious choreographers in the world. Diagnosed with dyslexia at a young age, Aakash found conventional education at school very challenging. He felt defined by his learning difficulties, rather than his abilities. As written language was so alien, dance became his preferred mode of expression. In Murmur, Aakash and Australian choreographer Lewis Major delve into the idea of warped and exaggerated realities. In a new collaboration with Major and Ars Electronica Futurelab (Linz, Austria), the company explores how the misconceptions of dyslexia can be revealed through visual design, light, sound and movement. Scarification and tattoos have been used since ancient times as marks of identity or experience. Aakash Odedra’s grandmother’s body was covered by signs that ensured her protection and sense of belonging. In Inked, choreographed by Laurence Olivier award winner Damien Jalet, the body becomes a place of transformation, an envelope marked, folded and metamorphosed by its journey through a ritualized space. Supported by Sky Arts Academy Arts Scholarships. Co-commissioned by Arts at Dartington (Dartington Hall Trust, UK), Curve Theatre (Leicester, UK), DanceXchange (Birmingham, UK), La Maison de la musique de Nanterre (Nanterre, FR), Maison des Arts de Créteil (Créteil, FR), Pavilion Dance South West (Bournemouth, UK), Royal Opera House (London, UK), Sampad (Birmingham, UK), Studio Programme, The Royal Ballet (London, UK ). Supported by Arts Council England. Age guidance: 11yrs+

Company Decalage //
Match & Halfway To The Other Side Friday 9 – Saturday 10 May // 8pm /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Company Decalage's new double bill features a meeting of minds, a light in the dark and three choreographers whose paths crossed, turned, flipped, spun and crossed again. Celebrated Midlands based choreographer and bboy Mickael ‘Marso’ Riviere joins forces with two exceptional talents; acclaimed choreographer, actor and dancer Guy Nader (originally from Lebanon, based in Barcelona) and extraordinary performer and choreographer Salah El Brogy (hailing from Egypt, based in London). Together they have co-created two brand new duets. In Match Guy Nader and Mickael ‘Marso’ Riviere construct a visually breathtaking place where destruction and renewal, devastation and beauty are never far apart. Salah El Brogy and Mickael ‘Marso’ Riviere present Halfway To The Other Side; part spiritual journey, part absurd reflection on our human tendency to repeat, replicate, endlessly circle through life and turn time on its head. Supported through public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England. Mickael ‘Marso’ Riviere is an Associate Artist at DanceXchange. Both works have been created with support from the commissioning partners, DanceXchange, The Place, Dance4 and Mercat De Las Flors, Barcelona through the European Dancehouse Network’s Carte Blanche scheme, and with support from mac birmingham, and Salah El Brogy Company. Border Tales Tuesday 13 – Saturday 17 May // 8pm /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Treated with trademark physical and verbal wit, Border Tales looks at multi-cultural living in the UK seen through the eyes of the characters on stage. Luca Silvestrini turns his sharply satirical gaze to stereotypical thinking, tolerance and where lines are drawn between ‘them’ and ‘us’. Seated in the round to bring you close to the action, a cast of international dancers and local performers will entertain and provoke you with this amusing yet poignant look at how we perceive ourselves and each other. Awarded Best Independent Dance Company at the 2011 National Dance Awards following its internationally successful production LOL (lots of love), Protein is known for high-quality distinctive and accessible dance theatre. The LOL creative team is back together for Border Tales, which includes a new score from composer Andy Pink. Commissioned by Bath Dance, ICIA Bath, DanceEast, DanceXchange, Dance Manchester and The Place. Funded by Arts Council England and Esmée Fairbairn Foundation. Supported by modul-dance and the Culture Programme of the EU, Greenwich Dance, Yorkshire Dance, The Place Choreodrome, Trinity Laban, British Council and in co-production with tanzhaus nrw in the frame of modul-dance. Luca Silvestrini is a DanceXchange Associate Artist and a Work Place Artist. Protein is resident at Greenwich Dance and is a Yorkshire Dance Partner. Age guidance: 12yrs+

Planites Thursday 22 – Friday 23 May // 8pm //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Planites is the latest work by Greek choreographer Patricia Apergi and her company Aerites. Patricia’s choreography is inspired by street culture and everyday life, mixing dynamism of movement with sharp humour. In Planites the company use the body and spirit of the streets as raw material to investigate an urban labyrinth. The piece explores the point of view of migrants moving from town to town, whether by choice or by force in today’s ever-evolving social and economic landscapes. This high energy witty performance showcases the impressive skills of five talented dancers and will leave you questioning concepts of migration, immigration and integration. Aerites is part of a European Dance House Network programme funded by the European Commission through Culture Programme, modul-dance. Age guidance: 11yrs+

Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui // m¡longa Friday 23 – Saturday 24 May // 7.30pm // Birmingham Hippodrome // £12 – £28 Deeply rooted in Argentinean culture, tango has fascinated and captivated the world with its sexuality, power and beauty. Internationally renowned for his ground-breaking and critically revered productions with artists like Akram Khan and Maria Pagés and for his award winning works, Sutra and Babel. Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui now collaborates with an incredibly talented cast of Argentinean dancers and live musicians to create a show that brings his own unique style to tango. Taking the idea of a milonga as its starting point, those social dance-evenings held in intimate late night bars in Buenos Aires, Cherkaoui draws on traditional influences and adds a contemporary twist. This is the first time that an international large-scale production about tango has been directed by a non-Argentine artist, offering exciting opportunities to explore the traditional dance from another cultural perspective. This promises to be a fascinating exploration of both traditional and contemporary tango for the 21st century. Argentine Tango Adult Beginners Far away from ballroom tango and its preset sequence, Argentine tango is a purely improvised dance, based on a connection between a couple and the music. Our tutors will guide you through a warm up and basics of this dance style. There’s no need to bring a partner for this class. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Ballet Kids/Teens/Adults Levels Our adult ballet classes are mostly taught by current or former members of Birmingham Royal Ballet; visit our website for a full schedule of tutors. Beginners: An introduction to the basics of classical ballet, the concepts of core stability, turn-out, flexibility, posture and placement. Improvers: Introducing more complex techniques, to further develop strength and stamina. Advanced: (Pictured, left) Ideal for dance students and professional dancers looking to maintain a high standard of technique, these classes provide challenging barre and centre work. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Bharatanatyam Teens Open Level Our Bharatanatyam class for teens focuses on classic techniques of one of the most popular and widely performed South Asian dance styles. Learn the basics of this style which combines technique with expressive hand movements. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Improvers: Develop your technique with more challenging movements and techniques, including floor work and more difficult travelling and jumping sequences.
