Lifestyle Update

t is the most special time of the year to remember our families and friends near and far. There is a lot of unrest in the world around us, an even better time to reflect on the many great advantages we have living in such a beautiful place. We have experienced a lot of change and there is more change coming with each new month. Our board is working feverishly to meet the deadlines we need to meet at the end of the year. This month’s magazine is a year in review, we have captured, art gala, pickleball tournament, 4th of July parade and Line dancing BBQ with Eric Dodge, Chili cook-off, Halloween party with the St. Geroge Wine club and the Brio craft bazaar. Also are the smaller classes we offer each month for Freezer meals, Insta-pot, and educational classes on retiring and what your investments are doing for you? Reverse Mortgages was one of the most interesting classes we have had, sponsored by the Brio Real estate agent Margie Hare. We have utilized the vast wealth of our community in many community events. We have artists, both scenic and craftsmanship, we have Medicare agents and real estate agents and let us not forget our very own hair stylist Jhonathan Pappas. We have our own photographer Will Andrea who made the pickleball pictures frameable. We have Keith Benson who teaches us each month about safety and utilizing the gym. Roxanne has an exceptionally good start on the Emergency Preparedness we need here at the clubhouse. These are events besides what each club offers each month. Friendsgiving is a November tradition with the Meet 2 Mingle club. We have had a remarkably busy year and I hope you will reflect on the wonderful times you have spent as a neighbor or friend here in Brio. It is my third year doing the Christmas Dinner, I am searching for the child in all of you that believes in Santa and elves, nomes and the fun Christmas can bring! We are having a delightful menu with Desert Springs Quintet, Sylva Christensen is making the Picnic quilt, this is the last Picnic quilt to win! The menu is on the poster. Sign-up before December 7th. I would like to extend my warmest wishes to you this Holiday Season. In reflecting on the good that we have had this year we have come a long way. We end this year with a meal together and welcome 2024 with exciting new changes!

President’s Column:

T

he Brio HOA board convened in October, marking a milestone with our largest board packet and agenda to date, spanning 89 pages filled with crucial action items. Seven new committees gained approval, and the board deliberated on various bids. Noteworthy decisions included welcoming Worry-Free Pool Service Company as our new vendor, though the pool remains closed for winter, much needed renovations can now be addressed. The esteemed Official Newsletter contract with PMP Management concludes at the year’s end, paving the way for an HOA Website, spearheaded by Larry Silverman. Anticipate a hub for club updates and event calendars. The Finance Committee’s volunteer list secured approval, actively scrutinizing the budget for the upcoming year, with recommendations forthcoming. The Design Review Committee (DRC) commenced its work addressing resident requests. The Board published the Q&A from the homeowner forum in the November 13th-17th Brio PMP weekly update. You can also find the Q&A posted on the portal. As a reminder, please send in your concerns for the board using the portal. The board will reconvene Tuesday 28 November at 5:30pm. As we enter the holiday season, let’s celebrate our vibrant community by extending warmth to neighbors. Wishing you all a joyful Thanksgiving, with thoughts for those unable to be with loved ones. Lynett Rodgers, President, Brio HOA

Mr. Foodie: SW Utah Restaurant Reviews “All the news that’s fit to eat” By Andy Margles

As The following is a list of my current favorite local restaurants, not in any particular order and not necessarily the fanciest, or most expensive in the area. Your opinion may be completely different from mine, but then, of course, you’d be wrong! (LOL).

HAWAIIAN POKE BOWL (SG): World class poke in St. George, Utah! Owned and run by family of Hawaiian fishermen. Poke flown in fresh daily from The Big Island and hand-cut by local owner. Reasonably priced, healthful. Try ahi tuna with any of several marinades. Décor pretty drab, but you can’t eat the atmosphere. Hours: 11am until they run out of fish, so get there early to avoid disappointment. Incredible quality/freshness/taste.

PIG’S EAR BISTRO (Hurricane): Worth the drive, just for the meaty, tender, juicy baby back ribs. High quality proteins, sourced

from name brand farm in the Midwest. Excellent burgers, salmon, steaks, pork and more. The Cajun shrimp appetizer is so good, they should bottle and sell the sauce. Table service and full bar.

WOOD-ASH-RYE (SG): Advenire Hotel restaurant, featuring mostly tapas (small plates) for adventurous eaters. Frequent menu changes. Cool bar and “modern pioneer” decor. Service is professional, but can be sporadic and/or leisurely, due to different preparations on the diverse menu. Covered patio.

PAINTED PONY (SG): Most consistent, well- run, fine dining restaurant in town. Smooth, knowledgeable service. Traditional/ modern American menu both approachable and complex. Open daily for L & D. Full bar and nice wine list.

RYLU’S (Santa Clara): Husband and wife chef-owners, with farm- to- table cooking (some items from their own backyard garden). Frequent menu changes. Wholesome, well prepared, delicious food. Beautiful presentation. Great service from knowledgeable staff. Small place, so make reservations. Nice wine list.

VIVA CHICKEN, A PERUVIAN ROTISSERIE JOINT (SG): One of only seventeen “joints” in the country and only Utah location.

Features Peruvian spiced rotisserie chicken and authentic side dishes, including fried plantains. Choice of three delicious Peruvian drinks. Reasonable, healthful, unique and really tasty food. Fast casual service. Open daily 11-9.

SAKURA (SG): High-quality sushi combined with Japanese steakhouse, plus traditional Asian menu. Try the special combo

rolls. Kids love steakhouse “chef show”. New building and lobby big upgrade over prior digs (gorgeous new exterior doors and “aquarium floor”). Table service. Full bar. Best sushi in town.

RUSTY CRAB DADDY (SG): Features New Orleans crab boils, which can include lobster and/or shrimp, various types of crab legs and crawfish, plus corn, sausage, potatoes and hard-boiled eggs! Various signature sauces are zesty and scrumptious, especially the “Special Crab Daddy”. Table service, with beer.

CASA TEQUILANA (Leeds) & LOS TAPATIOS (SG): Like two brothers from another mother, both feature great family recipes from Jalesco region of Mexico. Specials at CT usually wonderful. Restaurants are totally unaffiliated, but similar type food and quality. Great flavors, huge portions. Both have delicious moles. Table service and full bar at both. LT open Sun.

BENJA’S THAI (SG, 2 locations): Standard Thai menu, but very well-made and tasty. Tom Kha Kai soup and khau soi special are standouts. Curries are luscious. Table service. Wine available.

RED FORT (SG): Large Indian restaurant, with good service and relatively nice décor. Extensive, well- prepared, traditional menu. Wine & Beer served. Open for L & D, including Sundays.

NEW AND NOTEWORTHY IN 2023:

CRACK SHACK (Fried Chicken spiced by famous chef)

SOUL RAMEN (try the black garlic-tonkatsu version!)

LOS TAPATIOS (Mexican, see above review in Top 12 List)

PICA RICA (Texas BBQ) (Brisket is king)

JAYBIRD’S (Nashville Hot Fried Chicken)

KAISEKI SUSHI (Asian & Sushi, w/ black cod and sablefish)

MOUNTAIN MIKE’S PIZZA (Hurricane) (toppings galore)

Tis the season to rejoice! Tis the season to eat, drink and be merry … and usually gain 5-10 pounds. Staying active walking, biking, or using our wonderful Brio gym and pool can prevent the weight gain. Choose to stay active and maintain or improve your health. Choose to walk and talk with family and friends.

REVIEW: This past year we’ve talked about a variety of topics to help you stay

Keith Benson

healthy. Presentation topics have been: Exercise for Success, Backs & Necks What Can You Do, Pickleball – Exercises for a Stronger Game, Dual Pulley Machine – 8 Great Exercises and Golf: Coordination Power and Health. These have been some of the most popular topics in Brio.

I realize I don’t talk much about losing weight. Losing weight is a losing goal (statistically you’ll never win with a goal of weight loss). Losing weight is a product of a healthy lifestyle and healthy choices. Creating healthy lifestyles and making good choices is an attitude which gets results … for life. Making good choices will improve health and allow a more satisfying, accomplished life. It takes discipline.

PREVIEW: In January we will again have a workshop-style presentation, Exercise for Success to create

healthy lifestyles. I will specifically discuss structuring your life for a healthier life for the rest of your life. This structure promotes consistency, which promotes positive changes which promotes deeper satisfaction in life. I look forward to future information on the January presentation and join a Brio exercise or activity class or group.

CONSIDER: “The lesson I learned is that the power of prayer comes from being willing to accept the

answer. I prayed for strength and realized strength is not something that can be handed to someone on a silver platter. It is something that can only happen through experience and struggle.” - Julia Butterfly Hill, The Legacy of Luna

MAHJONG CLUB

The Brio Mahjong Club invites you to learn and join in this fun game. Mahjong is a tilebased game that began in China in the 19th century. The tiles display various Chinese designs and letters that indicate suits. There are four suits plus dragons, flowers and jokers. Similar to Gin Rummy, tiles are drawn and discarded until one player has a hand of winning combinations. When you make a hand, you shout out “Mahj”! Each game is played by four players. Mahjong has specific rhythms during play that make for just the right amount of time to socialize between rounds of play as you shuffle the tiles and build “the wall”. Mahjong is more a game of skill and strategy, with just a little bit of luck. We have the ability to play with multiple tables, which gives us room for more new players. While there are two types of Mahjong, Chinese and American, we play the American version here at Brio. For American Mahjong you work off a pre-printed card with the hands already displayed. You then work towards creating one of the hands based on the tiles you have and those you draw. The Brio Mahjong Club plays at the Clubhouse on Tuesdays at 1:30 pm. As leader of the club, I am happy to teach you how to play. If you have ever played Gin Rummy, you can play Mahjong. You can contact me, Ellen Margles, at ewmargles@gmail.com if you are interested in learning or would like to come up and watch first to see what it’s all about. I can do lessons one on one or with a small group. Mahjong players find the clicking of the tiles “addictive”. Both men and women play. While Mahjong can be played for money, our club just plays for fun. Learn the game and join the fun. 17
