LIFE @ BRIO

January arrives in southern Utah and as the new year arrives, we have put away Christmas, we have visited many friends and family, survived the winter solstice and looked forward to the year ahead! As we plan the new year, we are a year wiser in everything we choose to do. What are your inspirations and New Year’s Goals? Hopefully we can help in a few of these areas. My New Year’s wish for everyone in Brio is health. We have many classes available to make you stronger and age beautifully. We are introducing Tae kwon Do on Tuesdays at 11:00 am by our own resident Leslie Seward. We are also going to start this year with a professional organizer, Melodee Finlinson. She will take all of us, as we have downsized our homes, and show us interesting ways to organize. We are going to make soap and body scrub kits scented individually. KP will also teach us about houseplants! Our Chef Jeff has been inspirational in finding ways to teach us quick but healthy eating recipes As we continue through this year, let’s get organized, eat healthy meals and learn to track our exercise so we are getting the best of each class or workout we attend. As we look forward to this upcoming year I am very excited about all the fun and wonderful activities we can share to make this a very memorable year!
January 5th, Chef Jeff Crosland will be here to teach Insta-pot again. We are having so much fun with these one pot wonders for preparing a delicious and tasty meal that we are heading into the new year with new recipes, and fun ideas of how to cook healthy homemade meals for you.

Yoga Friday A mindful yoga and mindful you feeling mentally,
It seems like new restaurants are opening up almost weekly in the St. George area. One of the latest, Street Eats, located at 1812 Sunset Blvd., Unit 2, SG, (435) 703-6993, is an intriguing addition to the local scene.
It is owned and run by Cory LaFranchi, a talented Seattle chef who previously won Best New Chef of Seattle, as well as Best Food Truck operator! Cory and his wife moved here, partly to join family, during the pandemic. He then worked for Cliffside and Wood-Ashe-Rye, before opening Street Eats in 2022. Sourcing their beef from the famous Creekside Farms, the concept behind Street Eats is to use high end ingredients and gourmet techniques with basic dishes like hamburgers, tacos, nachos and tots. Everything on the menu is made from scratch. The prices are a bit steeper than average for these items, presumably because of the higher cost of the proteins and labor.
BENJA’S THAI (SG, 2 locations): Pretty standard Thai menu, but very well-made and tasty. Tom Kha Kai soup and khau soi special are standouts. Curries great as well.
The restaurant itself is small, and kind of funky looking, with Classic rock music playing from the speakers. There is seating, including counter spaces, for only about twenty. They are open for lunch and dinner six days a week but are closed on Mondays. They do not take reservations, although we did not have to wait when we dined there on a Friday evening.
SAKURA (SG): High-quality sushi combined with Japanese steakhouse. Try the special combo rolls Kids love steakhousechef show. New building and lobby big upgrade over prior digs (check out gorgeous new exterior doors and “aquarium floor”) New location hard to find without GPS and parking inconvenient
So, how was the food from this hot-shot chef and his crew? Did the high-quality meat and “chefy” techniques really make a big difference? Were these the best burgers/tacos/nachos in SW Utah? I was really excited to see…..
Well, while Streat Eats uses Creekside Farms beef, my hamburger was quite overcooked. There are several local restaurants in the area that use the same beef and their burgers are certainly the equal of the one I had. The tacos were also tasty, but did not set my hair on fire. Locally, Roctacos also makes tacos with “international” fillings, and offers more choices. Street Eats does not offer French fries on their menu, although their tots were excellent. They were out of their famous “wachos” (waffle fry nachos), so we couldn’t try those. Maybe next time.
1861 (Washington): Undiscovered gem! Yummy small plates of interesting, but very accessible food. Reasonably priced, healthful and delicious. Lovely décor. Located on grounds of Ovation Retirement Community, but NOT “old people food”! Black bass always delicious. Only open for dinner, Thu-Sat. Try it!
VERDICT: Too early to tell. Street Eats is relatively new and may need a while to hit its’ stride. While our meals were good, the restaurant somewhat failed to match the hype generated by the decorated chef-owner. Let’s hope it fully reaches its’ potential in the coming months. Also, a sign on the wall states that there will be additions to the small menu “in the future”, so stay tuned.
Casa Tequilana (Leeds) (Mexican), Rusty Crab Daddy (SG) (seafood boils), Chef Alfredo (SG) (Italian), Aragosta (SG)(European), Cliffside (SG) (modern American) (great views!)
The next hike for “The Hiking Club” (THC) is scheduled for Saturday January 14, 2023. Our destination is High Point Trail in the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve. There is no entrance entrance fee and no permit is necessary. This approximately 2.8 miles round trip hike is along an old mostly rocky maintenance road. It features an old water pipeline still in use, good views of the to the north, Yellow Knolls to the south, and a remote valley to the south and east at trail’s end. The trailhead elevation is approximately 4,170 feet with a 150 feet elevation gain from the trailhead to the end of the trail. I rate this hike as easy with a small total elevation gain, although there are up and down sections. It should take about two hours at a leisurely pace.
It is easy access to the trailhead in a standard vehicle. We will meet for the pre-hike meeting in front of the Brio clubhouse (directions attached) at 9:00 am. I encourage everyone to “like” The Hiking Club Facebook page. It is a easy way for us to communicate and share our hiking experiences and photos. Post some photos of our hike. You’ve probably noticed the Myofascia fitness class on the Brio calendar, and wondered what it’s all about! Let’s break down one of the hottest buzzwords in the fitness industry today. Self Myofascial Release is addressing the body’s organ called Fascia, pronounced “fash-uh”. Fascia is defined as “the soft tissue component of the connective tissue system that permeates the human body, forming a whole-body continuous three-dimensional matrix of structural support” (Lesondak 2017). If you’re wondering what you just read, let’s simplify: Fascia is the body’s soft skeleton. Imagery such as a 3-D web like structure is helpful here. Another great visual is a knitted sweater. A tug in your fascial fabric communicates across the entire network. It’s like the pull of a thread in a sweater. Fascia integrity is affected by a person’s daily life in the form of: injuries, surgeries, chronic repetitive stress, poor posture, breathing disorders, dehydration, and trauma. The Fascia becomes dry and hardened in affected areas of the body. This causes uneven tension or a snagged sweater effect to the fascia system. Which manifests in the body as pain, inflammation, restricted movement, and more. Self Myofascial Release to the rescue! In class, participants use a roller called a Fascianator to self massage the Myo, or simply known as muscle, Fascia. The format and knowledge taught in class provide participants with the ability to restore hydration and create profusion of the Fascia network, allowing the body to restore function in all ranges of motion and relieving restrictions. Check the Brio calendar to drop in to class! Extra rollers are provided for those who don’t have their own.
By Nicole BarnsonIsn’t life at Brio wonderful? We love our neighbors. Attend any class, club, or lifestyle event and you’ll know what we mean. It feels like one, big, happy family! An essential part of a family is caring for each other in times of need. The preparedness club is striving to do just that.
While this is a relatively safe area to live in, a few natural disasters such as fire and earthquake can happen. Years of the pandemic have taught us that we need to be prepared for empty store shelves and crowded medical facilities. Civil unrest in other cities has shown us what can happen anywhere, including here. Should an areawide disaster or threat happen, we want to be prepared.
Each of our monthly meetings focuses on a preparedness topic. Our January 10th meeting, 7 pm, will focus on personal safety. Our speaker reminds us that while a natural disaster can happen occasionally, our personal safety can be threatened anytime, anywhere. He will address ways we can protect ourselves.
In addition to our monthly meetings, we are organizing our blocks to respond in times of disaster. We offer Community Emergency Response Training (CERT) through the county. Watch for our announcement of the next CERT training series to be held in the spring.
Do you like to read? Do you like stimulating, thoughtful conversations?
Come check out the Page Turners book club.
January is Book Selection Month.
Choose one or more book(s) you would like to discuss next year in book club and tell us about it (them) at the January meeting. We will then vote to select the books for the year of 2023. We are looking for a variety of genres and topics for a variety of ages and interests. We would love your input!
A big thanks to everyone who participated last year. We read a wide variety of books from non-fiction to historical fiction to “just-plain” fiction, and young adult literature. We then look forward to the thought-provoking and lively discussions we have about each book in our meetings. We find that sharing our favorites with others is part of the joy of reading. One good read deserves another, January 26, 4:00 in the clubhouse lobby. See you then.
