Lifestyle Update
Tara Holm Lifestyle Director Laurette Johnston Community ManagerThe cooler air has arrived, the days are getting shorter, and fall has come to Southern Utah. We have recently voted for a new homeowner board. Congratulations to Lynette Rodgers, President, Scott McConnell, Vice President, James Styers, Secretary and Larry Silverman, Treasurer. We have three other board members, Richard DuBois, Andy Margles and Jan Gatrell who will oversee committees. The new board will be reviewing the CC&R’s, Bylaws and DRC process. Your voice and vote are more important than ever, so please continue to be active in this community. Your voice is constantly needed to bring about the changes this community has wanted to see for the past seven years. The work did not end with a vote, it began, so now the research that was done with the candidates needs to be done with the issues facing the community. You will see surveys and sign-ups that need to be addressed. Please support these people in the time and talents they bring; recognize they want to enjoy Brio too and always be friendly first!

Yoga, an ancient practice, and meditation has become increasingly popular in today’s busy society. For many people, yoga provides a retreat from their chaotic and busy lives. This is true whether you are practicing downward facing dog posture on a mat in your bedroom, in an ashram in India or even in New York City’s Times Square. Yoga provides many other mental and physical benefits. Some of these extend to the kitchen table.
Types of yoga
There are many types of yoga. Hatha (a combination of many styles) is one of the most popular styles. It is a more physical type of yoga rather than a still, meditative form. Hatha yoga focuses on pranayama (breath-controlled exercises). These are followed by a series of asanas (yoga postures), which end with savasana (a resting period).
The goal during yoga practice is to challenge yourself physically, but not to feel overwhelmed. At this “edge,” the focus is on your breath while your mind is accepting and calm.
A better body images
Yoga develops inner awareness. It focuses your attention on your body’s abilities now. It helps develop breath and strength of mind and body. It is not about physical appearance. Yoga studios typically do not have mirrors. This is so people can focus their awareness inward rather than how a pose — or the people around them — looks. Surveys have found that those who practiced yoga were more aware of their bodies than people who did not practice yoga. They were also more satisfied with and less critical of their bodies. For these reasons, yoga has become an integral part in the treatment of eating disorders and programs that promote positive body image and self-esteem.
Enhancing fitness
Yoga is known for its ability to soothe tension and anxiety in the mind and body. But it can also have an impact on a person’s exercise capacity.
Researchers studied a small group of sedentary individuals who had not practiced yoga before. After eight weeks of practicing yoga at least twice a week for 180 minutes (about 3 hours), participants had greater muscle strength and endurance, flexibility, and cardio-respiratory fitness.
Cardiovascular benefits
Several small studies have found yoga to have a positive effect on cardiovascular risk factors: It helped lower blood pressure in people who have hypertension. It is likely that yoga restores “baroreceptor sensitivity.” This helps the body sense imbalances in blood pressure and maintain balance. Another study found that practicing yoga improved lipid profiles in healthy patients and those with known coronary artery disease. It also lowered excessive blood sugar levels in people with non-insulin dependent diabetes and reduced their need for medications. Yoga is now included in many cardiac rehabilitation programs due to its cardiovascular and stress-relieving benefits.
Before you start a new exercise program, be sure to check with your doctor.
Researchers are also studying if yoga can help people with depression and arthritis and improve survival from cancer.
Yoga may help bring calm and mindfulness to your busy life. Find registered yoga teachers (RYT) and studios (RYS) through The Yoga Alliance.
Namaste.

Utah Restaurant Reviews
news
By Andy Margles“Grande Mexican Flavor”
After getting a recommendation by neighbors (Thanks, Kim & John), I recently tried a brand-new, local Mexican restaurant, Los Tapatios. Open daily for lunch and dinner and located in the former home of a Chinese buffet (987 Bluff St., SG), the sprawling space has a lot of tables to fill. In addition, SW Utah has more than 50 Mexican restaurants, all competing for the same business. Could this new, but grande kid in town possibly succeed in this already overcrowded market? With Mrs. Foodie in tow, I decided to find out.
My first surprise was how many customers were already there. The restaurant had only been open a week and had done little if any advertising. Yet, somehow, at 5pm on a midweek night, this place was already more than half full! While waiting for our menu, we observed a lot of happy looking people chowing down on huge portions of tasty looking food.
The large, multi-page menu had all the “standard” Mexican fare, like burritos, chimichangas, enchiladas, etc., plus pages of special dishes. It also gave background information on the owners, whose heritage and family recipes are from Jalesco, Mexico.
It was extremely hard to make a decision with so many interesting choices, so we decided to go with their enchiladas, which was our neighbor’s suggestion. I tried the enchilada trio; one being a chicken mole, another a chipotle beef and the third, a pork with a chili verde (green) sauce. Mrs. Foodie got the chicken mole enchilada, one of her favorite dishes.
While we waited for our meal, we enjoyed the complimentary homemade chips and thin, but tasty salsa, washing them down with a sweet aqua fresca and a minty Mojito. Service is tableside and they have a full bar. Overall, prices on the food and drinks are a little higher than average for the area, but still quite reasonable.
Verdict: Each of the three enchiladas was absolutely delicious! The sauces were bursting with flavor and the fillings were tender and juicy. The accompanying Spanish rice was moist and flavorful, as were the beans.
In fact, we enjoyed our meals so much, that we returned with friends two weeks later. Two of the gastronomic highlights from that visit were the pork shanks with mole and prawns with mushrooms and onions, in a creamy chipotle sauce. These two dishes were both delicious and unique to our area. Our friends ordered the enchiladas, based on our reviews and seemed to enjoy them as much as we had on our earlier visit.
So; absolutely delicious food, several unique dishes and preparations, comfy booths, large portions, reasonable prices, nice staff, open on Sunday. WHAT’S NOT TO LIKE? I highly recommend Los Tapatios, another great new addition to our local restaurant scene

Pumpkin Waffles
ingreDients:
• 1 ½ cups all purpose flour
• 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
• ¼ cup brown sugar
• 1 tablespoon Pumpkin Pie Spice*
• ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
• 2 eggs
• ½ cup pumpkin puree
• ¾ cup milk of choice (dairy or non-dairy)
• ¼ cup neutral oil (like organic vegetable oil, organic canola, or grapeseed)
Notes: *Or substitute 1 teaspoon cinnamon, ½ teaspoon ginger, ¼ teaspoon nutmeg and ¼ teaspoon ground cloves.
Directions:
1. Preheat the waffle iron to the high heat setting.
2. In a medium bowl, mix the all purpose flour, baking powder, brown sugar, pumpkin pie spice, and kosher salt until thoroughly combined.
3. In another bowl, whisk the eggs, pumpkin puree, milk, and neutral oil. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and whisk vigorously until the batter is mostly smooth.
4. Lightly brush oil onto the waffle maker. Immediately, add the batter (1 ¼ cups for a Belgian waffle maker and a little over ½ cup for a standard waffle maker) into the center of the waffle iron, then cook according to the waffle iron’s instructions. Remove the cooked waffles and place them on a baking sheet without stacking. Make the waffles to order, or place cooked waffles in a 250°F oven to keep warm.
5. Cooked waffles can be frozen; place them in a plastic bag and remove the remaining air with a straw before sealing. To reheat, remove from the freezer and lightly toast in a toaster.

12 ways you’re a better person than you think you are
1. You compliment others when it is deserved. Giving credit where credit is due is an important part of being a good person. A good person isn’t about themselves. They’re excited about other people’s achievements and successes. It’s not just complimenting other people. A good person wants other people to succeed in life, so they’re not afraid to give constructive criticism if they think that it will genuinely help someone. So if you genuinely want others to do well in life, and you’re not afraid to let them know about it, you’re probably a better person than you think you are.
2. You’re Grateful for your loved ones
A good person values their family and those who are close to them. After all, the people close to us make us who we are.
3. You are polite and respectful
Being polite and respectful is a hallmark of a good person. If you treat people the way you want to be treated, then you’re showing respect to others and you’re a better person than most. A good person doesn’t put others down to make themselves better. They know everybody is going through challenges in life, so they keep the peace and respect the individuality of each and every person.
4. You are kind to everyone
Kindness is a wonderful way to let another struggling soul know that there is still love in this world. A good person with strong moral values knows this. Good people can see past people’s flaws and focus on the positive traits of anyone. So if you’re a kind person, then you’re probably better than you think you are. Although kindness is a great quality to have, the key to beinga better person is understanding how much personal power you already have deep inside you.
5. You’re honest
Honesty is a rare trait these days. People are always trying to be something they’re not. But a good person knows who they are and what they’re not. They speak their truth and not what they think other people want to hear. This also means that good people are consistent in their behavior. Everybody likes them for the person they are. Because they stay who they are. So if you’re not contrived, and you genuinely express what you’re really thinking and feeling, you’re probably a good person that people love spending time with.
6. You’re optimistic
Good people see the best in situations. It doesn’t mean they avoid reality, but they realize that there is no point in complaining and worrying. A good person wants to progress forward, and optimism is the attitude that helps them do that. And compared to someone who’s pessimistic and negative all the time, positive people feel much lighter and more enjoyable to be around in general. If you can say that you make the most of every situation and rarely dwell on the negative you’re likely doing better than you think you are in this crazy journey of life.
7. You are generous with others
You know you’re a good person if you think about others first. A good person doesn’t take advantage of anyone because they treat people with dignity and respect. Do you only make decisions after considering everyone around you? Then you’re probably a better person than you think you are.
8. You take responsibility for your actions
A person with high integrity owns their mistakes. They don’t try to pin blame on outside forces or circumstances. A good person always steps up to the plate when things get though and owns up to the promises they make to follow through on them. A good person doesn’t disappear when things get hard; they finish what they started and stick it out, doing the best they can to fulfill their duties.
9. You’re wise
Being wise doesn’t mean being intelligent. Wisdom is about using the information you’ve learned through experience to make a good life for yourself and for the people around you. If you can say you’re openminded when it comes to learning and you’re not stubborn about turning away new perspective, then you’re probably doing better than you think you are.
10. You don’t wallow in self-pity
A good person doesn’t feel sorry for themselves. They realize that it doesn’t get them anywhere and it’s just a waste of time. Even if the odds are stacked against them, they move forward in whatever way they can. It’s the only effective way to live.
11. People can trust you!
No virtue is more universally accepted as a test of good character than trustworthiness. This is why a good person is extremely trustworthy. You can always rely on these people to have a word as strong as tone. So if you refuse to let others down, and you live up to your word, then you’re most likely a good person that treats others with respect.
12. You’re genuine
Everybody loves being around a genuine person. There are no lies or dishonesty. What you see is what you get. A good person doesn’t try to be somebody they’re not to impress others. If you can say that you don’t try to be someone you’re not and you accept yourself for all that you are, then you’re probably doing better than you think.

Jackson Day Animal Rescue
Jackson Day Animal Rescue (JDAR) is a foster-based rescue serving Washington County since 2019. The 501(c)(3) non-profit, no kill, volunteer animal rescue organization exists to decrease euthanasia rates at local shelters through spay and neuter programs, public education, and finding homes for cats and dogs. It rescues animals from Washington County government shelters, or sick or unwanted animals their owners can no longer care for, places them into foster homes or at the PetSmart Adoption Center, and ultimately finds them permanent homes.
Along with spay and neutering programs, adopting rescue animals is crucial. In 2022, 167 cats and 93 dogs were adopted from JDAR.
JDAR volunteers are among the estimated 44% of American families to have a dog family member (around 78 million dogs) and the 35% with a feline part of the family (around 85 million cats). For them, having animal family members and donating countless hours at the shelter, walking dogs, cleaning cat boxes, taking animals to the veterinarian, fundraising, giving medications to dogs and cats, organizing adoption events, and so on is a lifestyle because animals matter.

Dual Pulley Machine
I’ll recycle the dual pulley machine exercise presentation because it is a do-it-all machine and many people don’t even know it’s in our Brio gym. As dual pulley machines go, it’s one of the better ones you’ll find and use. You can do big functional movements or smaller stabilization exercises. The dual pulley machine can be adjusted for low, middle or high pulley exercises and can be done with fast or slow movements.
Adjusting the dual pulley machine can be difficult if you don’t use the correct hand position and the exercises listed on the plaques of the machine can be awkward to perform. I will show you easier to use and better-for-you exercises. Come to the Brio Health Presentation this October and learn how to use this fantastic piece of equipment for efficient, functional movement. For a preview, look at my videos on YouTube. Search “Keith Benson Exercise” or @SportCoachBenson. For whatever your health, fitness or sports performance goals, spend your time wisely in the gym and keep your body moving well!
