THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF SUNRIVER ST. GEORGE COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION
PROUDLY BROUGHT TO YOU BY
LIFESTYLE UPDATE December is here, what an amazing time of year! By Lisa McLeod, Assistant GM/Lifestyle Director PMP Management – SunRiver St. George Community Association Every year in December PMP looks for ways to give back and help those less fortunate. This year PMP will be doing a food drive for the local food bank. If you would like to donate to this drive, please drop off your canned food items at the Main Lobby by December 13th. We are also encouraging everyone to donate to the Toys for Tots program. We have the Toys for Tots bins ready to be filled with unwrapped new toys. This amazing program keeps the gifts local - those in Washington County will receive your generous gifts. December is a time not only to give back but also to celebrate! We can celebrate all the amazing things that have occurred over the past year, celebrate going into a new year, and celebrate that we live in such an amazing place! We have food trucks coming on two Mondays this month, Dec 6th and Dec 13th. You can take a night off cooking as we know you are busy shopping! We have planned a couple of fun ways to celebrate with your neighbors, the Resident Christmas Dinner/Dance on the 9th of December, and the New Year’s Eve party on December 31st. We are also offering a free holiday movie on December 21st. Come enjoy some popcorn and some laughs as we show the very popular movie Christmas Vacation. You also do not want to miss the Theater Club’s Christmas Show on December 11th, they always put on UPCOMING EVENTS: a very entertaining show that will surely put a smile on your face. We are Jan 5th – AYCE excited to see everyone at the many Club Dinners planned this month. Please Jan 11th – Science Night remember that our Events Team is very busy during this time of the year and Jan 13th – Science Night via Zoom if you need to speak to them it is best to make an appointment. SUNRIVER ROAD RUNNERS CLUB 1st Annual SunRiver Road Runners Pinewood Derby Ready, set, go! Every race started with those words at the 1st Annual SunRiver Road Runners Pinewood Derby on October 21st. There were 19 contestants who entered their handmade pinewood cars and raced multiple times to the finish line. Maximum Velocity provided the official Pinewood Derby racetrack and each race produced computerized race times for each car. Spectators and contestants had a great time viewing the cars, voting for their favorites, eating sandwiches provided by Chef Ryan, and then enjoying the excitement of watching the races to see whose cars were the fastest. Watching the contestants get their cars placed on the track and then see them anxiously await the outcome of each race was half the fun. It was an exciting time and the SunRiver Road Runners Group hopes to make this an annual event. Contestants spent so much time building their cars, it was evident that every car that entered was a winner. Here are the cars and contestants who won awards:
Best of Show - Gerald Tucker Best Paint - Hollie Woods People’s Choice - Mark Woods 1st Place Speed - Dave Romano 2nd Place Speed - Doug Mills 3rd Place Speed - Steph Bird

SCIENCE December: A Tribute to Ansel Adams Ansel Adams transformed landscape photography into an art form. In 1916, when Ansel was only 14 years old, his parents drove him to Yosemite National Park. Seeing the picturesque valley surrounded by high, granite, rock walls, transformed the young Adams. He wanted to take pictures that conveyed the emotional impact of seeing the grandeur of Yosemite. On Tuesday, December 14th, Ron Smith will give a Ballroom tribute to Ansel Adams. He will show some of Ansel’s artistic portrayals of Zion National Park. He will then show Ansel Adams: A Documentary Film by Ric Burns (provided by the PBS American Experience series) which chronicles Adams’ life and photographic accomplishments. You won’t want to miss the exquisite beauty of this presentation. You must purchase tickets in advance. The Ballroom doors open at 5pm: the presentation begins at 5:30pm. Popcorn tickets cost $1 and chicken wrap tickets cost $5. Two days later, on Thursday, December 16th, we will have a Zoom program that begins at 5pm. Whether you see the live or the Zoom program, prepare to be overwhelmed by the exquisite beauty of the photographic work of Ansel Adams.

POTTERY RAKU/HORSEHAIR KILN FIRE Recently our Kindred Spirits at the SunRiver Pottery Club had their annual Raku/Horsehair kiln firing in the parking lot of the studio. Several potters had built many pieces of clay in preparation for this yearly event. Our Raku kiln was heated to 1700 degrees Fahrenheit, and barrels filled with newspaper were ready to receive the molten pots. The pots were loaded into the kiln (about 3 or 4 at a time) and remained there until they were redhot. Very carefully, with long, fire-proof gloves and tongs, the pots were removed. Some pieces went into the barrels where the newspaper immediately caught fire. The lid, once placed back on the barrel, starves the clay of oxygen and lets the smoke cause the surface to take on unpredictable colours. Other pieces, which were to be treated with horsehair, were brought out into the open air and left to cool a little. The horsehair technique, just as it sounds, uses horsehair to create fine lines on the surface of the pot. The strands of hair (or feathers) laid upon the piece, leave carbon trails, horse-hair and feather imprints, as the feathers disintegrate from the heat. Not every pot is a success, the change in temperature from the kiln to the open air causes some pots to crack. So, the ones that survive are true treasures.

PEGS & JOKERS CLUB
Happy Holidays from the Pegs & Jokers Clubbers! January 1st, 2022 will mark the second anniversary of our SunRiver Pegs & Jokers Club and in celebration, we would like to invite you to make plans to join us in playing one of the most entertaining games around. We would also like you to read on as we share the history of the Pegs and Jokers Club with those who may not know it. Rob & Lindy Hilton, co-founders of the club, learned Pegs & Jokers while visiting Dillon, Montana about 17 years ago. The game soon became their family’s favorite. In 2017, the Hiltons became SunRiver part-time residents at which time they met Marlin & Akemi Cardon and consequently taught them the game. Six months later, when the Hiltons returned after the summer, they found that Marlin had made eleven boards in the Woodshop. He and Akemi had also taught about 24 people to play. The group met regularly in the Cardon’s home, filling every space that would accommodate a card table and four chairs. On August 29, 2019, a group was formed at the Community Center. The first meeting was in the Game Room, which was jampacked with 46 attendees. In October, the Hiltons returned, and Rob and Marlin began shopping for lumber and doweling. Within a couple of weeks, the two had made 20 boards in the Woodshop and Rob & Lindy had made 400 pegs. The Hilton’s home was transformed into an assembly line for staining and varnishing boards and painting pegs. The Cardons gathered signatures, received approval, and Pegs and Jokers became an official club in January of 2020. Before COVID closed the activities at the Community Center, we averaged 17 tables with 100 active members. We are excited to be back in the Multi-Purpose Room to play our favorite game after the long COVID break. We are now averaging about 9 tables and we anticipate the addiction to Pegs & Jokers to spread. Pegs and Jokers is an adult version of the game Sorry, and there are many, many variations of the rules. The original club presidency narrowed down the rules and adopted those that made the game interesting but simple. Look on the SunRiver Website to view the SunRiver Pegs & Jokers Rules and sign up to receive emails. The Pegs & Jokers Club meets on Thursday nights from 6-8 pm. Come join the fun and be prepared to become addicted!

Toys For Tots
Toys for Tots is a charity that supplies underprivileged children with new toys at Christmas time. It was founded by the Marine Corps Reserve in 1947. The Toys for Tots program in St. George supplies, on average, 14,000 toys to 3000 children in the area. All the work is done by volunteers, mostly from the Marine Corps and the Veterans Rotary Club. Please bring your new toys to the box provided in the Community Center. The children thank you.

RESIDENT SERVICE COMMITTEE Now Hear This! At some point, most of us will lose our ability to hear clearly. On December 14, 2021, at 11:00 AM, Walk With A Doc and the Resident Services Committee will feature Dr. Spencer Stirland, an audiology and neurotechnology specialist. He will give a brief 5-minute presentation on “Hearing Aids and Treatment Options: The Journey to Improved Speech Understanding”. Then he will walk with SunRiver and other St. George residents while answering participants’ questions. Dr. Stirland’s medical practice focuses on Neurotechnology, or the study of cognitive impairment resulting from hearing loss. Most hearing aids simply amplify external sound levels while his research focuses on how the brain “hears” those sounds. Dr. Stirland believes this is the upcoming technology in audiology research. Walk With A Doc is an opportunity for those interested in their health to come and listen to a physician and then walk with a doctor on a round trip of up to one mile. Those living outside SunRiver are welcome to come and fully participate in the presentation and the ensuing walk.

Whitestone Park
Recently, while walking my dog, I met a new friend. During our brief conversation I learned that, although she has lived in SunRiver for a couple of years, she was not aware that we have a park in Neighborhood 4. Whitestone Park is a pretty, pocket park. It is located between English Ivy and Grapevine Drive and on the south side of Whitestone Drive. It is very easy to find. The park is recessed a bit from the street; tucked away to make it a very quiet and peaceful spot. As you enter it from the sidewalk, you’ll see a nice grassy area with a bench and a short hiking path up the hill towards Grapevine and back down again on the other side.

It has become a destination for some who like to bring their furry friends to romp in the grass. It is also a place for visitors, with or without dogs, who walk the neighborhood and stop to sit down and rest a bit before continuing on their journey. PREPAREDNESS COMMITTEE Christmas is less than a month away! One useful gift you can give yourselves, your family, or even a good friend would be some materials toward a 72-hour or grab-and-go kit. These kits typically consist of an assortment of food and emergency supplies in a portable container. Emergency food should preferably not require cooking and be enough for three to five days. This food does not have to be a balanced diet; it just needs calories. Comfort food is acceptable and even essential. As a rule of thumb, aim for about 2,000 calories per day. Such foods may include emergency rations (available at preparedness stores or Amazon), dehydrated food, or even items like Pringles, peanut butter, or granola bars. Look for foods with a long shelf life or be prepared to rotate them regularly. One Christmas we purchased several small items for our kits and wrapped them individually. It was especially fun to have dozens of presents under the tree. Some suggestions for a 72-hour/ grab-and-go kit include: a small first aid kit, personal medications, a hygiene kit (including towels, bandanas, toothbrushes, dental floss, and a small roll of toilet paper), a change of weather-appropriate clothing, a water bottle or canteen, space blankets, a lightweight fleece blanket, a poncho, a tube tent, matches/fire starting material, a multi-purpose pocket knife, paracord, a small roll of duct tape (perhaps wrapped around a water bottle), a flashlight, glow sticks (from the dollar store), or perhaps even a hand cranked, combination flashlight/radio (some of these hand crank flashlight/radios even include a USB port to charge a cell phone). It is also wise to carry copies of important papers such as insurance and bank information. Furthermore, personalizing your children and grandchildren’s kits (or yours!) with small games or other activities, special treats like hard candy, a hat, a fun t-shirt, etc. can make them feel special, pass time, and help make an emergency feel less frightening. The above is not a comprehensive list!!! There are many other items people may also wish to include (including perhaps an N95 mask, emergency whistle, and cash). Once it is all accumulated and contained, the operative consideration is: “Is it still portable?” For more information consult: https://www.ready. gov/kit or beready.utah.gov or talk to one of our CERT members here in SunRiver.
Condolences to Family and Friends of Bernard (Ben) Vanbenthem And especially his wife of 64 years, Thea.

HIKING As I was preparing the hiking article for this month, I came across this quote on the American Hiking Society home page:
‘
In today’s world of chaos and constant stimulation, it’s hard to quiet the mind and think. Getting into Nature offers a way to find some silence and clarity; and it’s an important tool to counter our standards of survival in society. The more and more pressure we put on ourselves, the more our health degrades. Our minds and bodies need silence in order to regenerate. Hiking is a great way to reap the benefits of what nature has to offer.
HIKING DATES Tuesday, December 7th, 2021 - Family Hike to SunRiver Ridge Event time: 9am-12pm
‘
If you could use a little time away from the hustle and bustle of life, we have got some great opportunities for you! Our hikes for December will be close to home and, with the cooler weather, we are able to hike in our own backyards. Something we cannot do as comfortably in the warm summer months. This months’ hikes take us near Hurricane and Kayenta as well as, quite literally, in our own backyard on the Ranger Bart trail. You can find the full hike descriptions on the hiking calendar at the new SunRiver website. Look them over, pick out one or two or more, and join us out on the trail!

Guided Meditation Guided meditation is a meditation that is led by a demonstrator. A demonstrator can present such meditations on videos, online, or as a live presenter in a group. Following a time of progressive relaxation, guided meditation often involves going on a meditative journey. The journey can involve picturing yourself being on a mountain trail, going to the seashore, or maybe going down some steps. It does not involve emptying or quieting your mind. It is more of a way to follow a voice: opening a door to a deeper state of consciousness. Everyone is led to the same place, but each will experience the journey in a different way. You may meet a friend or a guide on the journey who has information unique to you. That guide could be your higher self. The journey is meant to help you get out of your present life so you can be open to a different way of being. It helps you open your heart to experiencing your life in a more loving way. The benefits of guided meditation are many. The medical benefits include lowering stress, reducing physical pain, lowering blood pressure, and helping with insomnia. The emotional benefits include reducing anxiety and negative thinking and improving coping skills and focus.

FITNESS ...when we give of ourselves, everything from life satisfaction to self-realization is improved December is a time when we get in the Holiday spirit by spending time with family and friends, going to parties, Christmas caroling, celebrating, and of course giving gifts to others. But in this season of gift giving, did you know that giving of yourself can be one of the best things for your health? Studies have shown that giving of yourself (through acts of kindness) can produce remarkable health benefits including lowering blood pressure, improving cardiovascular health, slowing down the aging process, increasing energy and self-esteem, reducing stress, anxiety, and depression. Here’s how the biology works: Performing acts of kindness releases oxytocin, the feel-good hormone, which increases self-esteem and optimism, according to Dr. David R. Hamilton, author of “The Five Side Effects Of Kindness”. Oxytocin also causes the release of a chemical called nitric oxide, which dilates the blood vessels and reduces blood pressure. Because of this, oxytocin is known as a “cardioprotective” hormone. It protects the heart by lowering blood pressure. Perpetually kind people have 23% less cortisol (the stress hormone) and age slower than the average population, according to Integrative Psychological and Behavioral Science, 1998. Decreased levels of cortisol help reduce stress and anxiety and can lift your mood and make you feel better. “People who volunteer tend to experience fewer aches and pains,” said author Christine Carter. “Giving help to others protects overall health twice as much as aspirin protects against heart disease. People 55 and older who volunteer for two or more organizations have an impressive 44% lower likelihood of dying early, and that’s after sifting out every other contributing factor, including physical health, exercise, gender, habits like smoking, marital status and many more.” In summary, when we give of ourselves, everything from life satisfaction to self-realization (the fulfillment of one’s potential) is improved. Additionally, physical health improves significantly, mortality is delayed, and depression is reduced. Feelings of well-being, the ones that help us feel healthy, happy and positive, are increased. Here are a few ideas of what you can do this holiday season to perform an act of kindness and be a “gift” to someone else: • Ask a fellow resident about their past, where they’ve come from, what they did for a living, and what kinds of things they enjoy. • Text someone good morning or good night. • Ask a neighbor if they need a ride somewhere, even to the Community Center. • Let someone have a closer parking spot than yours if you’re both looking for one. • Buy someone lunch just because you feel like being generous. • Compliment someone you see doing a good job, no matter what the job is. • Smile at your neighbors and all those you interact with. These are just a few of the limitless things you can do to show acts of kindness, be a gift to someone else, and even improve your own health. What’s even more interesting is that acts of kindness tend to be contagious; more and more people will do them when they see others doing them. Who knows, with your continued acts of kindness, you may just start a revolution and make this word a friendlier, healthier, and better place. Why not give it a try?
Happy Holiday Season to All
