Amsterdam Night & Day is published by DW Publishing Holdings a.s Director: Blair Argust Tel.: +31 6 8191 8172 Email: amsterdam@nightdaymagazine.com
Amsterdam Night & Day is a registered trade name and publication. Neither the trading name, nor the format, or the content may be reproduced. All right reserved.
Welcome to the autumn edition of 'Amsterdam Night and Day', the hippest, funkiest and most vibrant guide to entertainment in the Dutch capital. When we say entertainment, we mean fun and our hope is that this magazine will help in some way to make your visit to Amsterdam more memorable. If something inside surprises you, increases your knowledge or brings a smile to your face, our goals have been achieved. We don't specialise on subjects such as museums, tulips and windmills, because that's not what we are about. However, if you'd like to know about the fun side of Amsterdam, ie. the bars, restaurants, nightclubs, hotels, coffeeshops, funattractions, events and the Red Light District, you won't be disappointed by our content. Despite the increase in visitors to several other European cities and the current economic crisis, Amsterdam still tops the league when it comes to electric nights and daytime delights. Make no mistake, this is still one of the most dynamic, entertaining and cosmopolitan cities in the world. Rain, sun, hail or snow, Amsterdam rocks 365 days a year. There is always something extra-special about Amsterdam in the summer. Perhaps it’s the huge number of festivals which attract so many international guests or maybe it’s the electric atmosphere that is created alongside the canals when the sun shines. It's a city that never sleeps, no matter what time of day it is, and our aim is to inform you about the venues and services, good or bad, which we have encountered during our four years in the city. As many of you are probably aware, Amsterdam Night & Day is only one of many free guides you will find in the city, but unlike many others, we have only featured places that we have actually visited and we have tried to list all the venues which made a positive impact on our team. Our magazine is available in over 100 hotels in the city as well as several bars, clubs and information bureaus, so it shouldn't be hard to find us. There is always something extra-special about Amsterdam in the autumn. Perhaps it’s the changing colours which are so evident, particularly along the canals, or perhaps it’s the return of the students who add youth and energy to a city which is already electric.

THe ReD LIGHT DISTRICT
Famed the world over and that's not surprising. A stroll through Amsterdam's Red Light District is always an experience for obvious reasons. The District is one of the oldest parts of the city and houses some truly beautiful buildings and churches. In recent months it has been the topic of much debate as the Government tries to clean up the crime. CeNTRAL STATIoN The first and last place the majority of people experience in Amsterdam's city centre, Central station is a stunning building both outside and inside. The harbour of Amsterdam is at the back of the station. The construction of the Central station in 1885 closed off the city from the open water for good and was a turning point in the Amsterdam economy.

a unique location DAM SquARe The beating heart of the city. The Dam covers 17,000 square metres and is the national square of the Netherlands. It is also the oldest part of Amsterdam and almost 1,000 years ago fishermen, shipbuilders and craft workers settled in the area. Visual highlights around the square
include the national war monument and the Royal Palace. .
LeIDSePLeIN Another vibrant nightlife area, which is illuminated by neon lights, while the countless bars, clubs, cafes and restaurants ensure an energetic atmosphere. Venture onto the side streets of the square to find yet more examples of Amsterdam's electric nightlife or take a walk up Leidsestraat to find some of the city's best shopping outlets. A trip to Leidseplein is a must for all visitors, especially the ones who enjoy the lighter side of life.
ReMBRANDTPLeIN One of the top going-out areas of the city, the famous Rembrandt square is amass with bars, cafes, clubs, restaurants and bright lights. It has enjoyed massive refurbishments and changes in recent years, as businessmen from the area successfully attempted to modernise and freshen up the area.
THe NIeuWMARkT Located at the edge of Amsterdam's Red Light District, and part of the ever expanding Chinatown, the Nieuwmarkt, is a picturesque and sizeable square which houses some excellent bars, restaurants and coffeeshops. In the centre of the square, you can find a church-like building called the Waag, once part of the ancient wall around Amsterdam. 3 In association with:
Essential Info LANGUAGE The official language is of course Dutch (Nederlands) but almost everyone speaks fluent English and they are proud to do so. COAT OF ARMs The official motto for the city is Valor, Resolution, and Mercy and these are represented by the three X's (st Andrew's crosses) which you find almost everywhere around the city. TIME Amsterdam is one hour ahead of GMT. MONEY As with almost all EU countries, the currency in Holland is the Euro. Before that, the Dutch Guilder was the currency, with two Dutch Guilders coming close to the value of one Euro.
WEATHER Amsterdam enjoys a moderate temperate climate which is influenced by its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. Winters are mild and average above zero degrees. summers are comfortably warm but seldom hot (although last year was very hot at times). Amsterdam does not have an overly wet climate, averaging around 750 mm of precipitation annually. TIPPING The general consensus and indeed it has 4
also been our strategy since we have been here is to leave a 10 – 15 % tip. However, never be afraid to abandon a tip if the service is not as it should be. CREDIT CARDs Most places will accept credit cards, but there are some which don’t, so always enquire first if you intend to pay with plastic. PARKING One of the biggest eye sores in the city. suffice to say that parking can be a nightmare in Amsterdam and it is also quite expensive. If you are parking along the canals, be sure to pay at one of the nearby meters, because wardens are always on the look-out and are quick to issue fines. OPENING HOURs shops are open from 9am until 6pm daily, although many do not open until midday on sundays and Mondays. Thursday is late shopping night with stores staying open until 9pm. TELEPHONING When dialling from abroad, prefix any number you find in our magazine or website with +31 and then 20 for Amsterdam.

Some information which may be useful during your stay in Amsterdam.
Public Transport
Public transport in Amsterdam is among the best in Europe thanks to the constant availability, simplicity, efficiency and punctuality of the services. TRAMS Trams operate at regular intervals throughout the entire city center and the outskirts from 6.0am until around 12.30am. You will have to wait no longer than 10 minutes at the tramstop. You can travel anywhere in the city centre for one hour on any tram for 2.60 Euro. special 24-hour tickets can also be purchased from newsagents, or on the trams themselves. TAXI The recent Governmental decision to liberalize taxis has had its advantages and disadvantages. On the positive side, there are twice as many

taxis on the streets, but many of them charge too much and are driven by rude drivers. We have always found TCA to be reliable and they can be contacted at 020-6777777. A novel taxi trip can be enjoyed on one of the city's many bicycle taxis and the price is also fair and the drivers are usually polite. BICYCLeS You'll notice almost immediately, that there are an incredible number of bicycles in Amsterdam. Renting a bike is a great way to see the city and we thoroughly recommend Mike’s Bike Tours for both tours and rental. They can be contacted at 020-6227970. TRAIN The service provided by the Dutch Railway Board is exceptional and all trains will leave at regular intervals on time.

torture museum 'When Life Really Was A Living Hell' Amsterdam is famed for it's vast array of museums. Some are both fascinating and educational, but many are truly boring and provide as much stimulation as watching paint dry. The Torture Museum at Singel 449 falls into
Inside the torture museum the first category and is really worth a visit. Nowadays, crimes and sins such as adultery and petty theft can go by unpunished, but that wasn't the case during medieval times and Amsterdam's Torture Museum offers hard proof of this through the various weapons and instruments of torture on display. The methods used to punish adulterating males and females are particularly interesting and you can almost feel the pain just by seeing and touching the various instruments, which include the Torture Chair, the guillotine and the rack to name a few. The museum also offers detailed explanations in six different languages about the different instruments and methods of torture which were used in medieval days. The dĂŠcor and lay-out of the two octagonal rooms adds to the sense of eeriness you experience during a walk through the museum and allows your mind to further adjust to the fear that the victims of the various tortures must have experienced all those years ago. The museum is open daily from 10.00am to 11.00 pm. GETTING THERE: Singel 449. Extremely easy to find as it is situated directly across the canal from the famous floating Flower Market. Department Stores & Malls In some ways it’s difficult to believe that Amsterdam could have so many huge and excellent department stores, such is the demand for space in the city. All the department stores are centrally located and within short walking distance of each other on the main shopping thoroughfares. Here are some of the best ones: MAgNA PLAzA Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 182. One exception is Restaurant La Boca, which can be found close to the Royal Palace on Paleisstraat. La Boca offer their customers an excellent range of freshly grilled Argentinean meats from the charcoal grill. The spare ribs and the fillet steak have tickled our tastebuds on many occasions and they will do so again in the near future. As well as the wonderful meaty treats, La Boca also offer some excellent fish dishes and their tapas courses are also pleasing on the taste buds.

The restaurant opens every day at 10.0am for coffee and cakes, and lunch or snacks are available until 4pm and from 5pm, visitors can enjoy some wonderful dinner choices. The bar also screens SKY Sports TV and the service is always good. The Hoopman is attached to two equally entertaining venues which are under the same ownership – Reijnders and The Hole In The Wall together, the three venues provide one of Amsterdam’s best outdoor terraces in the heart of Leidseplein. Reijnders is a large traditional Dutch brown cafe which was founded in 1880 and is steeped in history. Its success lies in the fact that it is big enough to hide away for a few

St. James Gate Irish Pub
A night view onto St. James Gate terrace. When walking the streets of Amsterdam, you could be forgiven for thinking you are actually pacing the roads and byways of Dublin or Galway, such is the number of Irish bars in the Dutch capital. However, quantity does not equal quality and many of these so- called 'Irish bars' go over the top in their bid to ensure an Irish theme while others fall well short. Thankfully, there are those which are well worth a visit and one of the best Irish bars in this city or any other is St. James Gate in the heart of Rembrandtplein. Named after the famous brewery where Guinness is brewed, St. James's Gate is a spacious venue, which prides itself on quality beverages, good food, an excellent atmosphere and most importantly, friendly service. In the past couple of years, the venue has improved dramatically thanks to a new and refreshing management strategy and even the locals will admit that this place is in the Premier League of Amsterdam cafes and bars.
Unlike many other Irish bars in the city, most of the staff actually hail from the Emerald Isle and those who don't, know more about Ireland and Irish culture than most 'paddys' themselves. Now that we think about it, it is unfair to describe the food as ‘good’, because it is much better than that, as the venue offers culinary delights which are as good as you will find in any restaurant and also very affordable. Choose from set dishes such as lamb curry, traditional fish & chips and sirloin steak and also keep an eye out for the numerous daily specials which are always excellent. As you would expect, they also offer a delicious Full Irish breakfast. Sky Sports television can be viewed via an excellent big screen or the half dozen or so televisions and an excellent atmosphere is guaranteed during football matches. St. James Gate is always one of the best bars to visit in autumn time, as they boast one of the city’s biggest and best outdoor terraces which offers the splendid view onto Rembrandtplein and the various forms of street entertainment. Other attractions include a separate smoking room and a full range of English newspapers. Mulligan’s Irish Music Bar
Outside Mulligan’s Irish Pub. Amstel 100. Tel.: 020-6221330. www.mulligans.nl. Mulligans Irish Music Bar looks right out on the river Amstel, from which Amsterdam took its name eight centuries ago. Over the years its easy location, casual friendly atmosphere, and the blend of quirky characters who call it home, have somehow made Mulligan's into a legendary meeting place for musicians, writers, artists and other unsavoury types — as well as a destination for thousands of curious visitors from abroad. It's called an Irish music bar because much of the time, something is happening that's both Irish and musical. Noteworthy modern songwriters and traditional players from Ireland make regular appearances, as do the more accomplished locals. Every Sunday evening there's an open Irish session where musicians are welcome to join in. On the first Monday of each month the McSweeney Dancers hold a set dancing session with live music, inviting participation from beginners and experts alike. Why Irish music in Amsterdam? Believe it or not, there's a strong traditional Irish music movement in the Netherlands, and it's not just Irish ex-pats who play the stuff. A lot of Nederlanders are quite fond of Irish music —
and some of them play it very seriously indeed. There are of course some shining exceptions to that prevailing Irishness. You may just find yourself sitting in an Irish bar in Holland, at a table with a bunch of happy Norwegians, listening to country-western tunes played by four Dutchmen who sound like they're from Tennessee. Or dancing to Greek music played by four Bulgarian Amsterdammers. You just never know — unless you check the event calendar. Mulligans also provides a separate, comfortable smoking room in the back which is open all working hours until midnight during the week and later in the weekends. One other thing sets Mulligans apart from most bars in our fair city: uncharacteristically good service. The folks behind the bar may not look like the hardworking conscientious type, but you'll generally find yourself well taken care of by people who actually know what they're doing. People tend to feel welcome at Mulligans. That's why they keep coming back. Mulligans opens at about four (16:00) in the afternoon (14:00 on Saturdays and Sundays), and closes at 1 AM (01:00) weeknights and 3 AM (03:00) Fridays and Saturdays. The smoking room is open until midnight during the week and 2 AM (02:00) on Fridays and Saturdays.

Tripping On The Weed
Amsterdam's Soft Drugs Scene
Since the 70s, Holland has had the most liberal marihuana laws in Europe. But some of you may be surprised to learn that it's not strictly legal here, just tolerated. This may seem ludicrously hypocritical, as there are over 300 licensed coffee shops in Amsterdam alone and the government actually collects tax from them. The new smoking ban has played havoc with the coffeeshops as tobacco is no longer allowed to be smoked, but most places offer tobacco substitutes and more and more are introducing smoking rooms. You can of course still smoke pure or use bongs and pipes, so it’s not all doom and gloom. Marihuana is not dangerous, but it is a drug and doesn't suit everyone. If you feel paranoid or sick, just stop. Another piece of sound advice is to consult with the workers of the coffeeshop before purchasing. Soft drugs tend to be stronger in Amsterdam, so always seek advice from coffeeshop staff, especially if you are a first-timer. If you don't smoke, but would still like to be involved in the soft drug scene, try spacecake. Warning, it can take up to an hour or two to take effect, so don't sit there thinking it's crap before it's had time to kick in.

Coffeeshop Heaven!
THE ROOKIES Korte Leidsedwarsstraat 145 – 147 Tel: +31 20 6390978 www.rookies.nl Over the years, many Amsterdam coffeeshops seemed to lose their way and lose their purpose, as owners sought ways to be more commercial and more profitable. Thankfully, there are some venues which still maintain the true Amsterdam coffeeshop values and one example is ‘The Rookies’ which can be found close to Leidseplein on Korte Leidsedwarsstraat Street. Don’t let the name fool you, because this place has been around for almost two decades and the staff are among the most knowledgeable and experienced you will find. The coffeeshop got its name because back then in 1992, the owners were among the youngest in the coffeeshop trade. In our opinion, the thing that separates The Rookies from most others are the chill and relaxation factors. Not many coffeeshops offer the friendly service, relaxed atmosphere that you will find in the Rookies.
Furthermore, it has a much more open feel than most narrow, cramped coffeeshops that you find in Amsterdam and it boasts one of the city’s largest smoking areas with seating for more than 70 people. The products at Rookies are also top of the range and only the best weed and hash is sold here. They are also renowned for their space cakes and also offer bongs and other smoking equipment. The tunes are also worth mentioning, as their choice of music enhances the atmosphere. In summing up, this truly is one of the ultimate coffeeshop experiences in Amsterdam. Experienced and amateur smokers; tourists and locals – everyone is welcome at The Rookies.

health checks. They have even formed a kind of political party, which lobbies the Government when improvements are needed. Don't get any ideas about threatening the girls or harming them, because bodyguards, despite not being visible are always close at hand PHOTOGRAPHS Taking photographs of the girls is forbidden. If you break this rule, your film or even your camera could be confiscated or even destroyed. BLACK CORNER 'Black Corner' is situated near the old church and is easily recognizable as the ladies are all coloured. Some of them will open their door as you walk by and offer bargain deals. This is done for a reason and if you concur, there's a good chance you will leave minus your wallet. UNSAFE SEX Don't make a fool of yourself by asking for sex without a condom. It doesn't happen. BLUE LIGHTS This is only a warning for heterosexuals. If a blue light glows from above the windows, you are dealing with transsexuals. Maybe a treat for our gay readers, but a major shock for the straight guys!
CHARLIE BOYS These are the numerous individuals selling hard drugs on the black market . Most of them are harmless, but their goods can often be damaging. When walking in the Red Light District, these guys will approach you and ask if you want to purchase 'Charlie, heroin ecstasy etc.'‌..ie. hard drugs. Just say no and walk away. BE A FRIEND INDEED FOR A FRIEND IN NEED Never abandon a colleague who is in a drunken state. It can also be foolish to visit the Red Light District unaccompanied at an ungodly hour and it's wise to avoid quiet alleyways when it is late. DISPLAYING YOUR ASSETS This doesn't mean you have to keep your zipper closed, it's a simple warning against thieves, so don't keep your wallet or money in a place which is easily accessible. Best if you only carry the money you require for that night.
