From world class attractions, shopping and sport to legendary music and nightlife, the city region is bursting with the widest choice of things to do. This is why I enjoy my job as Lord Mayor of Liverpool so much; I get the opportunity to show this great city in a good light. I also come to work in one of its most iconic buildings and feel lucky to do so! The Town Hall is a great building and has so much to give to visitors and the community it serves, it should be used a whole lot more. If you want to know more about what I do, what happens in The Town Hall or book the building for an occasion call 0151 233 2030 This is just one building amongst hundreds that should be explored so much more and this magazine will make sure people will have the opportunity to do that! In conclusion, whether you’re coming to Liverpool for an afternoon of shopping or a holiday, this magazine is the essential guide that everyone will want and need. We at Night&Day and in fact the people of Liverpool would like to Congratulate and thank Gary Millar for the excellent work he has done throughout his 12 months as Lord Mayor, and wish him all the best for whatever he decides to do next! Fitting then that Liverpool hosts the the return of French street theatre mavericks, Royal De Luxe, as they bring their cast of giant marionettes back to the city for the UK's biggest – in every sense of the word – commemoration event to mark the centenary of World War One's (WW1) outbreak. The Memories of August 1914 event, spanning five days from 23-27 July, sees the Little Girl Giant and her faithful companion Xolo return with the new addition of her 85-year-old grandmother. The trio will roam the city's streets in a moving tribute to that war-torn era and a generation of Britons who faced down adversity.
Giant Spectacular
Memories of August 1914, 23rd-27th July
“If I have seen further, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants,” Sir Isaac Newton famously once said. That was his tribute to the efforts of scientists before him, who laid the foundations for his discoveries. But it's a sentiment that could just as easily be brought to mind when remembering the heroes of the First World War and all that we have to thank them for. Lest we forget.

The International Festival for Business (IFB) 2014
Liverpool plays host to the International Festival for Business (IFB) 2014, over the course of seven weeks in June and July, as part of the year's largest gathering of global business events. The 50-day festival aimed to attract a national and international audience of business delegates and trade intermediaries, with more than 150 business-centric events of every size and persuasion on offer. Billed by organisers as “a key part of the government's target of rebalancing the economy and achieving its export and investment objectives,” the festival programme highlighted seven distinctive 'Best of British' themes, including everything from creative and digital industries to manufacturing, science and technology. Sounds ambitious? That was exactly the point, according to the official IFB website. “IFB 2014 isn’t a talking shop,” they said. “We are placing an
explicit focus on creating new international and domestic business-to-business relationships and commercial openings for small, medium and large UK companies.” As such, this “once in-a-generation business festival experience” pulled out all the stops with major international conventions, product launches, conferences, workshops, award ceremonies, seminars, business breakfasts and a succession of ‘meet the buyer’ events.

Going all out to promote emerging artists, from across the North West, the Indies gatecrash public spaces to bring artistic works from the gallery's confines to everyday locations. So look out for their work across our city's streets, markets, shops and bars.
Liverpool Biennial 2014, 5 July-26 October
Art lovers, prepare to be amazed. Because the UK's largest international contemporary art festival, the Liverpool Biennial, takes over the city once more from 5 July to 26 October. It promises to bring a colourful palette of 900 established and emerging artists, as well as inspiring community projects, to our attention over the course of ten marathon weeks. Since launching back in 1999, the Liverpool Biennial has commissioned over 200 new artworks and now attracts attendance figures of more 600,000 visitors over the span of the event. The eighth instalment of the Biennial exhibition is cropping up all over the city this year. In familiar gallery spaces – like the Bluecoat, FACT and Tate Liverpool – but also in some quirkier spaces too. The visual arts fringe festival, The Independents (or Indies if you're too cool for art school),
If you're feeling inspired by all the creativity on show, you too can easel your way in on the action (sorry!). Because there's a dizzying variety of community focussed initiatives taking place. Including family workshops, school tours, free learning resources and projects working with Liverpool Schools. Diane Cannon
Official corporate and community
WHEN Diane Cannon’s niece was diagnosed with skin cancer in 2002, she knew that life would never be the same again. But like most people, Diane believed that with treatment her niece, Claire Culbert would get better and everything would be okay. Sadly, this wasn't the case and after a brave battle with the illness, Claire passed away in December last year.
“The whole family was devastated by Claire’s death,” recalls Diane. “She had two children, Lauren & Elliott and she was only 38 when she died. She was an amazing person and although she was seriously ill, she still spent time helping others with the condition. She never complained and just got on with it. She was simply our Warrior Princess"
also just as important, to raise awareness of the dangers of melanoma, as she explains, “Just simple things like encouraging people to wear Factor 50 sun cream even in this country, is the message I am trying to get across. We mistakenly believe that because the weather is so rubbish in the UK a lot of the time, that when it is sunny here it can’t do any harm. That’s completely not true. Last summer we had temperatures as high as countries next to the Equator so the need for sun protection is stronger than ever! “Also we need to ensure that the use of sunbeds is no longer an acceptable practice. Claire did use sunbeds when she was younger but there was less publicity around then about the dangers of sunbeds, and I know for a fact if she had known the risks involved, she would never have gone on a sunbed in her life. It’s not like you even have to give up on having a tan completely or anything – we girls love our tanning however stay safe and just get yourself a spray tan or better still get it out of a bottle!” Diane’s latest fundraising venture is organising a 1,043 mile bike ride from Liverpool to Krakow, which aims not only to raise muchneeded cash for the charity but also to increase awareness of skin cancer. Diane explains why she and 'Team Claire' chose Krakow for the event: “After having her children, Claire went back to university and received a first class honors degree. Her dissertation was all about the Hidden Children of the Holocaust and it was always her passion to visit Auschwitz to see a concentration camp for herself. Sadly she never got to do that trip so it seemed fitting to do it in her memory.
“Most people don’t realise that melanoma is a killer and it is this fact, coupled with the desire to continue Claire’s legacy and make sure that some good comes out of her death, which has fuelled my passion to help the charity, Melanoma UK.”
14
Diane’s role is primarily to raise funds and

fundraiser for Melanoma UK.
Our official launch event was held on 2nd May at The Richmond Hotel, Hatton Garden which having raised over £5,000 its certainly put Melanoma UK on the Liverpool map” The bike ride has the full backing of the Lord Mayor of Liverpool who has not only donated £500 to the charity but has also agreed for the bike ride to start out from Liverpool Town Hall on September 6 this year.
WHATS ON
Diane is really excited about the ride which is gaining momentum all the time: “Through the Lord Mayor’s contacts at the Polish Consulate, we will be introduced to local dignitaries in Poland along the route and I am working flat out to get as much exposure as possible from local businesses in this country, especially in Merseyside. It is also my job to make sure that the cyclists have everything they need for the ride such as accommodation, food and refreshments. Team Claire consists of her brother Mark Culbert (The Front Man), best friends John Merrill, Elaine Stapleton, Graham Schumacher and lets not forget our team mascot, Obie the dog. “I had no idea when I started out volunteering for the charity how much work would be involved, especially as I am also running my own business, however, it is worth every minute if I can achieve mine and more importantly my niece's goal of raising awareness of this brutal disease which so cruelly took her life at such a young age.”

Liverpool and that will never change. I was actually born in Allerton. I am a ‘red’, sorry all you blue’s out there! My mum is more than a mum; she always has been and will be my rock. She also is my No 1 fan too” You cannot speak to Mercedes without mentioning the tattoos, so I asked her to explain them;
“I got my first tattoo when I was 16, you may not believe this, but I was a rebel back then (whereby she let out a loud and cheeky laugh). It has become a part of my life now, I think I have about 20, you could say it is one of my trademarks. I was recently on the cover of Tattoo Life and they also did a behind the scenes video too. I asked if she found it hard to live a healthy lifestyle, while looking after her body, essentially as it is tool of her trade;
Mercedes Edison is a Liverpool girl who has made her name in the modelling world locally and nationally, but now intends to ‘cross the pond’ and see if she can make it in America.
Before I spoke to her, I knew she would be a determined and focussed individual and I was not disappointed, but she is far more than that!!
“To be honest, I am lucky, I have never needed to diet or train every day to keep my figure, and in fact I even manage to sneak in the occasional pizza, ha!!
I questioned her on why she wants to move to the US; “It is a difficult decision, I have my family and friends here in Liverpool and my career has definitely started to take shape, but the opportunities in America are vast. They also do not pigeon hole you
We started with the basic questions; birth place, age, and up bringing etc;
16
“Right then, I am a 22 year old girly girl, but with a tough attitude to life, you have to be in this industry. I am a petit 5ft 4”, but don’t be fooled by that, you don’t want to mess with me. I am proud to have been born in 01512982222

way. To survive in her industry you have to have all those qualities, but the reason I think she will go on to even bigger and better things, is the fact she is a ‘real person’. She has not and will not lose sight of who she is or where she came from. She has not lost her accent, sense of humour or family ties. We hope she makes it in the US, but it does not matter where she is in the world, she will still always be one of US. there, you can have a go at virtually anything!! The way I look at it is, I can always come back to Liverpool, but if I didn’t give it at least a try, I would always regret it” I asked Mercedes what her aims for the future were;
“As I have just said, the possibilities in America are endless. I am enjoying my modelling and dancing, but recently I have started to write my own songs and I have also been a DJ!! The type of person I am, I think I will always want to stretch myself no matter what I do. Everyone in this mad industry of ours, would love to be known worldwide, but it only happens to a few, but you never know do yea?”
If you want to follow Mercedes, you can do on Twitter - @merceyedison or on Instagram – Unimerce . Interview by Mike Black, Operations Director, N&D UK
Seeing how enthusiastic Mercedes was about her career and life itself, I asked her what her proudest moment to date had been;
“ I have had quite a lot of success in my short life and for that I am so so grateful , but I think the best thing so far was when I first saw myself on a Billboard and then on a Bus Stop. I didn’t know whether to scream with excitement, cry with emotion, or simply laugh, thinking about how a little girl from Allerton, who was bullied at school and has had some troubled times, could achieve something like that, it was really humbling” Mercedes Edison is a hardworking, professional and determined woman, who will definitely not let anyone or anything get in her

hopping in Southport has a lot of unexpected gems. From the stunning architecture of Lord Street to the bustling activity of Chapel Street, quaint individual shops on Wesley Street to antiques and collectables in the Royal Arcade. The town also has a number of retail parks all bursting with popular brand names and big retail outlets. For the more traditional shoppers among you, there are an abundance of villages offering superb local produce and the town also has its very own Market Hall.
Lord Street
26
One of Southport's most celebrated shopping sights is Lord Street, a Victorian canopied boulevard edged in scenic gardens. With a charming, unique style all of its own, Lord Street has been a favourite shopping destination for over a century. Speciality shops and designer boutiques are just a stone’s throw
from the street’s picturesque and leafy gardens. The street also hosts the Wayfarers Shopping Arcade which has been open since 1898.
Chapel Street
For high street brands and national names you must pay a visit to Chapel Street, which is adjacent to Lord Street. It’s a fully pedestrianised thoroughfare and the gateway to the town for rail users. You will find the bright and airy shopping arcade “Marble Place” on Chapel Street.
Wesley Street
Wesley Street is affectionately known as the “Village in the Town”. It boasts a relaxed and friendly atmosphere and offers something for everyone. Accredited with numerous awards for floral displays and community spirit, you will find a string of unique, independent shops painted in pastel colours. Shopping In Southport Southport is a shopper's paradise. There's quite literally something for everyone. Whether you're hankering for that perfect summer dress, a bespoke trinket, or some antique furniture you are in luck. It's not just the wide array of high-street brands and whimsical boutiques that turn on the charm either. It's the setting, the ambience, the experience. You'll no doubt pick up a bargain but you'll also have your head turned by the magnificent treelined boulevards, Victorian shopfronts, pastel shopping streets and glass-roofed arcades from a bygone era. Invest in a Southport shopping spree and you'll bag yourself an experience that money can't buy.
Lord Street is the epitome of Victorian glamour. Its sheer breadth compares with global shopping thoroughfares like New York's Fifth Avenue and Paris' Champs-Élysées. But with its leafy gardens and decorous canopied shopfronts our prestigious main street tops the bill for beauty. It's the ideal place to promenade for flash new footwear, salon pampering, and department store surprises.
At it's heart is the stunning Wayfarer's Arcade. This Grade II listed building harks back to 1898, an age when roofs were sprawling statements of glass and shopfronts were finished in mahogany. As well as the lovely architecture and timeless atmosphere there are 30 exclusive stores selling everything from fashion, furniture and jewellery, to an old school barber for distinguished grooming.

that brings the 'Village in the Town' bursting into life.
Nearby, the innovative redevelopment of market hall encompasses Southport Market. This is shopping as it used to be; quality produce from knowledgeable local shopkeepers. It's the ideal place to pick up the finest locally sourced cheeses, meats, vegetables, fish and flowers. There's also fashion, handbags, haircare and several tasty dining options. Fringing the town you'll find a smattering of high quality shopping parks – like Ocean Plaza, Central 12, Meols Cop and Kew – chock full of familiar superstores for all your fashion, lifestyle and homeware needs. Plus there's the quaint village settings of Birkdale and Churchtown for boutiquestyle shopping in a relaxed, friendly environment. As you can see, we're certainly not short of shopping options in our fair town. Money can't buy this experience but it can land you that cute pair of shoes or dapper jacket, so what are you waiting for? If you haven't already sampled the wares then why not hit the pavements for an afternoon of glorious retail therapy? We guarantee you won't be disappointed.
In the pedestrianised centre, bustling Chapel Street is the town's commercial core. Some of the nation's most recognisable brands stand side by side here just a stone's throw from the main train station. There's also the airy confines of the Marble Place shopping arcade, which brims with tempting stores offering health and beauty products through to men's and women's fashion.
Just around the corner, quaint Wesley Street has carved a reputation for upscale independent shopping and a blooming community spirit. Nestled among its pastel-hued shops you'll find a traditional sweet shop, family photography, children's toys and much more. Not to mention an annual street festival 01512982222

careful plan is needed when you visit Liverpool, or you are certain to miss some of the most interesting parts. You would need to take a month off work to experience all the attractions the city has to offer. So, you want a museum? Which one would that be then? Would it be the Maritime Museum or perhaps the World Museum? Wait a minute, was it the Slavery Museum or possibly the Museum of Liverpool? A certain quartet was ‘quite’ successful in the 1960s, so maybe you want to find out more about them in the Beatles Museum? I think you can see what we are getting at. There is just so much to do and so much variety, so the aforementioned plan really is a good idea. Everywhere you walk you experience history. his section of our Magazine is dedicated to introducing lesser known worldwide locations to; visitors, tourists and investors. Emerging tourist destinations need investment to ensure the visitor experience is a memorable one. This investment is not only into the tourism industry, but the actual infrastructure itself, therefore both benefiting from the partnership. All the new destinations have the essential requirements for a great place to visit, so all the locations we cover have; attractions, events, history, culture, architecture, scenery and a variety of hospitality venues. They also have the energy and desire to welcome and embrace more tourists and investment. Individually, these locations are not as well-known as London, Paris, Rome, Hong Kong and New York, but they are destinations that are calling out for more visitors, and as a group, that call is louder. Each new destination is supported by Mayors, Embassy’s, Tourist Boards, Chamber
of Commerce’s and/or Investment Organisations. Essential to these locations are also Travel Agents, Tour Operators, Hotels and other private companies. This gives them a solid financial support, which ensures all parties benefit from their involvement. Liverpool, Prague, Amsterdam, Karlovy Vary and Salzburg are already involved, with Macedonia and Plovdiv joining this summer. Hopefully Rzeszow, Reykjavik and Cologne will soon be added. Macedonia
A
New Wine Destination
n old proverb says: If you want to get to know a nation well, sit at their table and drink their wine.
Known as the cradle of culture and land of nature, the Republic of Macedonia is a country nestled in the heart of Southeast Europe. Throughout the centuries, the geographic region of Macedonia, which represents a natural crossroads, has been contested by various kingdoms and empires. Macedonia has diverse terrain which matches her rich history. Its national parks showcase the true beauty of the country.
Vranec, Temjanika, Traminec, R’kaciteli, Zilavka, Kratosija - It may sound like one is hearing words from another world, but these are actually the main wine grapes of Macedonia. Even though Macedonian wines will be new to many people, wine is not at all new to Macedonia. Since time immemorial, on the soil where the Republic of Macedonia is today, people have been making good wine, the wine that arouses the imagination and fulfils people's dreams. The beginnings of wine production in the country date back to ancient times, even 4.000 years ago. Development continued into Byzantine times, and the Slavs, who later settled the territory, also adopted the tradition. Today, there are regions of the country where people live from wine and for wine, where people love and make wine... The Republic of Macedonia is a country with undulating vineyards dispersed between Mediterranean and continental climate, wineries and whole villages dedicated to wine, people whose days and nights are devoted to growing, cherishing, keeping and enjoying wine.
DESTINATIONS
Currently there are 24.000 hectares of vineyards providing a livelihood for several thousand grape growing families dedicated to produce wholesome sun kissed grape clusters of world well known but also a diversity of indigenous varieties Smederevka, Temjanika, Belan, Zupljanka, Zilavka from whites and Kratoshia, Prokupec and flagship red variety, powerful Vranec.
Last decade marked the commitment of leading producers and wine makers to put Macedonia on the international wine map. Intensive developments in both viticulture and wine-making, transformation of old and emerging of new wineries. Devotion to quality and sincere desire to offer exclusivity and new sensation to the palate of consumers continuously advances the image of our wines making wine the second most important export product. Wines from the Republic of Macedonia are present on the tables of many consumers in EU and all the countries in Southeast Europe. Coming back to the proverb at the beginning , we invite you to taste wines from Macedonia and to take a wine tour around Macedonia. We are sure that you will be amazed.

This city has been Thracian, Greek, Roman and Ottoman, it is literally a record of the history of that region of the world, in one location.
This city was originally named after the 7 hills that surrounded it and these hills are seen on their Flag and Coat Of Arms. After the

Romans occupied the region it was renamed after the 3 major hills it is situated within. When you stand at the top of any of these hills and see the spectacular views, you will see why they were so influential in its name throughout its history.
The 'Old Town' of Plovdiv is amazing, it does not only have many houses that were built by the upper classes of the Ottoman Empire, but it has an original medieval street too! Picture yourself walking down a normal 'high street' and then all of a sudden you turn into a side street and find yourself walking on cobbled streets and looking at buildings constructed hundreds of years ago, it's not only humbling, but thought provoking too!! The most spectacular places I saw in Plovdiv were The Ancient Theatre, Roman Odeon and Stadium. If you can imagine scenes from Ben Hur and The Gladiator, then put yourself in the middle of them, that is what it feels like!
Bulgaria and especially Plovdiv has numerous Churches, Mosques, Temples, Museums and Galleries to visit, so you really do need time to take them all in. If you can, try and schedule your visit to coincide with one of the many festivals they have.
I went to the Young Wine Festival and it was fantastic. All the new season's wines were available for tasting, along with traditional food. Groups of young people dressed in their red and yellow traditional dress would start singing and dancing, filling the area with colour and vibrancy. After several hours of going in and out of the local houses to sample all the wine, everyone at the festival joined in the celebrations, including myself.
Plovdiv has been accepted as a City Candidate For European Capital Of Culture 2019, so they will be promoting themselves a lot more and asking for backing and support. In my opinion, the best way to do this is to go there and experience the city for yourself and you will see why they have received this accolade! Plovdiv is definitely a place for you to visit in the FUTURE, so you can see how civilisations lived in the PAST.

rague is the capital of the Czech Republic and has always played a central role in the history of the country and Europe. It is known as the city of ‘hundred spires’, due to the amount of religious buildings there. The city was built around the beautiful river Vltava and within the shadows of nine hills. This location was important in the cities growth, but also in the joining of the spiritual and cultural beliefs of all its inhabitants. This magnificent city was founded on the building of Prague Castle in the 9th Century. It has been extended many times throughout its life span and is now an impressive building, which looks out over the whole region. The Old Town of Prague was originally created in the 13th century and has a lot of Romanesque style buildings. It also has Gothic Style buildings and structures, which add to its uniqueness. Some of the most popular locations to visit are; Convent of St Agnes of Bohemia, The Old-New Synagogue, St Vitus Cathedral, Charles Bridge, The Church of the Lady before Tyn. Add to them Vladislav, Hall, the Powder Tower and the Old Town Hall with the Horologe. The aristocrats in the 16th century brought a lot of the renaissance style to the city, and then in
Prague
the 17th century Baroque style buildings were added. Modern architecture was then added in the 19th and 20th century, so the city centre has an absolute abundance of magnificent buildings to see and visit. Great buildings alone do not make a great tourist city and Prague has so much more than that. The main square is one of the most spectacular in Europe and it regularly holds music festivals and markets etc. It is also surrounded by a variety of bars, clubs, restaurants and shops, which extend out into the multiple side streets nearby. Several other things to entertain you when you visit there are; River cruise, walks along the banks of the Vltava, Museums, Gallery’s, Shopping Centres, Parks and Gardens. The night life is lively and varied, but does not impact on the enjoyment of the town, as most of them are down side streets and alleys. Therefore, if you want go and enjoy them you can, but they are not in full view to all visitors. Prague cannot be described sufficiently in written word as it has to be experienced, so go and experience it for yourself. arlovy Vary is situated on the west coast of the Czech Republic and is not only a ‘class act’ of a destination, but it is possibly the most sophisticated location you will ever visit. The Spa’s here are regarded as the best in the region, and are rich in curative springs and natural waters. If it is a healthy, treatment filled and chillaxing venue you are seeking, look no further! To keep on the well-being theme, Karlovy Vary was and still is famous for the Becher Herbal Liquor, so you will not only be healthy on the outside, but the inside too! The town is also famous for Moser Glassmaker, which has the best repetition in the country and some say the whole of the Balkans. It may not be Cannes, but it certainly is a glamorous occasion.

This has created a classy feel to the majority of hotels, bars and restaurants, thus attracting the more affluent of visitors. This extends to the shops in the town, which have quality throughout. Eating & Drinking in Liverpool
he variety of international cuisine in Liverpool is endless as you would expect from a cosmopolitan city, but while you are here, you really should try some of the local delicacies that the city is famed for. Traditionally, food in the UK is centred around meat dishes including Beef, Pork, Chicken and Lamb and some well known specialities such as Bubble and Squeak, Toad in The Hole and Yorkshire Pudding, but while you are in Liverpool you just have to try the main dish of the city, ‘Scouse’. Basically a local version of Irish stew, ingredients include potatoes, carrots, lamb, onions and spices, and it is served with a cob of bread. The dish became so synonymous with the city that locals have become known as ‘Scousers’ throughout the country. Various strange sounding sandwiches, or in Liverpool better known as a ‘Butty’ should also be sampled. Why not try a Chip Butty or
a Sugar Butty or even a Conny Onny Butty. The latter is a bizarre concoction containing condensed milk. If you want something sweet then try a local black and white striped toffee with a sugar coated covering and a minty flavour called the ‘Everton Mint’. Developed in Liverpool more than 100 years ago and still to this day thrown into the crowd at every Everton Football Club match, the mint became so popular that the Everton club became internationally famous for their nickname of ‘The Toffees’. If local dishes don’t tickle your fancy, there is no need to worry. The city has some wonderful international restaurants and many of them are featured in this section of our magazine. Whether it be Chinese, Italian, Indian or almost any other national cuisine, we are certain that whatever your particular favourite may be, Liverpool will satisfy your taste buds perfectly.
