t is a pleasure for me to introduce Liverpool Night&Day Magazine.

From world class attractions, shopping and sport to legendary music and nightlife, the city region is bursting with the widest choice of things to do. With the largest collection of museums and galleries anywhere outside of London, the city’s culture and heritage are at the very heart of the destination. Others find our attraction is our superb restaurants and hotels catering for every budget Liverpool is 5th in the top ten UK holiday destinations leading the way not only in the Northwest but also in the English regions. This is why I enjoy my job as Lord Mayor of Liverpool so much; I get the opportunity to show this great city in a good light. I also come to work in one of its most iconic buildings and feel lucky to do so! The Town Hall is a great building and has so much to give to visitors and the community it serves, it should be used a whole lot more. If you want to know more about what I do, what happens in The Town Hall or book the building for an occasion call 0151 233 2030 This is just one building amongst hundreds that should be explored so much more and this magazine will make sure people will have the opportunity to do that! In conclusion, whether you’re coming to Liverpool for an afternoon of shopping or a holiday, this magazine is the essential guide that everyone will want and need. careful plan is needed when you visit Liverpool, or you are certain to miss some of the most interesting parts. You would need to take a month off work to experience all the attractions the city has to offer. So, you want a museum? Which one would that be then? Would it be the Maritime Museum or perhaps the World Museum? Wait a minute, was it the Slavery Museum or possibly the Museum of Liverpool? A certain quartet was ‘quite’ successful in the 1960s, so maybe you want to find out more about them in the Beatles Museum? I think you can see what we are getting at. There is just so much to do and so much variety, so the aforementioned plan really is a good idea. Everywhere you walk you experience history. Macedonia
Macedonia
Your must-see place in 2014
The main Square in Macedonia’s capital city of Skopje.
T
he first thing people said when I mentioned that I was going to this beautiful country was, “where is Macedonia?” That part is easy; it used to be known as the region of Yugoslavia, and has been Macedonia for over 22 years. It is one of the Balkan Countries, which is located in South Eastern Europe. If you are still struggling, it’s just above Greece and next to Bulgaria! But the question of ‘where is Macedonia’ should no longer be a geographical one, but more of an evolutionary one. This region has had such a diverse past; it would be hard to distinguish which era has shaped it the most. It was a part of the Roman and then Ottoman Empires and it
was also a Communist-run country for a period too. Macedonian people are a peace loving and friendly people, and are now trying to find their true new identity, without losing sight of what got them to where they are now? Where else in the world can boast rulers such as: King Phillip ll and Alexander The Great, but then also include the total contrast of Mother Teresa being born there, one of the most caring and loved persons in history. Macedonia has influences from so many different cultures and countries which have made it delightfully and intriguingly unique. Imagine mixing together ingredients from Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria, and then adding a touch of Italy, Germany and Holland - what a meal that would be!
36 01512982222
Macedonia The Italian dish, Macedonian Salad was named after this country, due to its multicultural inheritance and influences. All of these factors are present in Skopje, which is situated in the north of the country. It has a magnificent main central Square with a variety of stylist and traditional cafes, bars and restaurants. It has striking monuments and buildings which are accessed via a variety of scenic paths and walk ways. The ‘Stone Bridge’ built over the river Vardar, which runs through the centre of the city is an iconic symbol and is known as ‘The bridge between the East and West’. The city of Ohrid, is a massive tourist destination and is in the south of the country. It has the oldest and deepest lake in Europe. It is not only visited by people from around the world, but by the other Balkan countries
and Macedonians themselves. This beautiful lake has a variety of beaches and is surrounded by stunning mountain ranges. It’s lengthy sunny climate and variety of bars, restaurants and hotels has made it an extremely scenic and relaxing place to go to. There are many more other places to visit, especially any of the 5000 archaeological sites, but a Winery Trip is a must. I went to the Tikves Winery, which is the longest in the country, and it was not only interesting and informative, but I got to taste a large variety of the wines and spirits they produce, plus having some of the fresh local food too. Wine is one of Macedonia’s main exports. They have not only won many awards, but for the first time, they are getting worldwide notoriety, as Marks and Spencers are now stocking a white wine from this actual winery!

skiing, sporting activities and spas, and you are just beginning to find out a little about this engaging, unique and yet under-visited country. The great news is (and to some people the best news), is the value for money in Macedonia. It is still only an EU and NATO candidate, thus not a full member, so is not as effected by the recent worldwide financial crisis as a lot of tourist locations have been .Therefore, when you are eating out in the main square in the Capital, or in one of the other many tourist locations, you will be pleasantly surprised by the cost. For example; a coffee is just over £1.00, a beer is £1.25, a traditional or European main course is around £3.00, and a bottle of good quality wine is around £ 2.90.

Macedonia The Macedonian Government have proactively been inviting worldwide Tourism and Investment for the last 5 to 7 years, and you can see how the country is slowly changing already. The change is more of an evolving type of change, instead of a fake and forced progression, so it will be a steady and sustainable one. The investment potential in Macedonia is endless, as it is actively encouraging ideas, support and partnership with individuals and companies to help create its new identity and position on the world stage. So back to the original question, “Where Is Macedonia?” The answer to that is also simple - it is discovering itself, whilst wanting people to discover it too!! Make Macedonia your ‘must see place’ in 2014 For more information, contact the people below who will be more than willing to help you discover Macedonia;

Eating & Drinking in Liverpool
he variety of international cuisine in Liverpool is endless as you would expect from a cosmopolitan city, but while you are here, you really should try some of the local delicacies that the city is famed for. Traditionally, food in the UK is centred around meat dishes including Beef, Pork, Chicken and Lamb and some well known specialities such as Bubble and Squeak, Toad in The Hole and Yorkshire Pudding, but while you are in Liverpool you just have to try the main dish of the city, ‘Scouse’. Basically a local version of Irish stew, ingredients include potatoes, carrots, lamb, onions and spices, and it is served with a cob of bread. The dish became so synonymous with the city that locals have become known as ‘Scousers’ throughout the country. Various strange sounding sandwiches, or in Liverpool better known as a ‘Butty’ should also be sampled. Why not try a Chip Butty or
a Sugar Butty or even a Conny Onny Butty. The latter is a bizarre concoction containing condensed milk. If you want something sweet then try a local black and white striped toffee with a sugar coated covering and a minty flavour called the ‘Everton Mint’. Developed in Liverpool more than 100 years ago and still to this day thrown into the crowd at every Everton Football Club match, the mint became so popular that the Everton club became internationally famous for their nickname of ‘The Toffees’. If local dishes don’t tickle your fancy, there is no need to worry. The city has some wonderful international restaurants and many of them are featured in this section of our magazine. Whether it be Chinese, Italian, Indian or almost any other national cuisine, we are certain that whatever your particular favourite may be, Liverpool will satisfy your taste buds perfectly. Bon Appetit!

Emergency Numbers Throughout the UK, the emergency services are all called via one number which is 999. You will then be asked which service you require by the operator.
Pharmacy Currency The Pound has remained the currency in the UK and is generally the only accepted currency that can be used. Although the largest note in general circulation is the ÂŁ50 note, it is advisable not to accept this denomination from exchange bureaus, as you may find them difficult to spend in small shops and bars. You will encounter no problems with any smaller denomination..
Liverpool city centre has no shortage of pharmacies. However there are currently very few 24 hour pharmacies in the UK. In an emergency your hotel should be able to give you more information.

INFO Public Transport
The Public transport system is run by Mersey Travel and is usually very reliable. Trains, buses and ferries run frequently throughout the day and there is also a night-bus service. The easiest way to get around is by the excellent Merseyrail system which links most suburban areas to the city centre. The two main bus stations can be found on
Roe Street and Paradise Street. Buses are frequent across the whole city and amongst the cheapest in the country. The cheapest and most convenient way to get around is to buy a Saveaway ticket which gives you 24 hours unlimited journeys on any train or bus in Liverpool, Wirral or the wider Merseyside area. They are available from newsagents, railway stations and bus stations. There is also an underground system that operates between Liverpool’s four main train stations (Lime Street, Central Station, James Street and Moorfields). The quickest way to get to the other side of the river is by Merseyrail but for outstanding views of the city, we recommend that you catch one of the famous Mersey Ferries from Pier Head. Mersey Travel also combine public transport with various deals on visitor attractions, combined travel and entry promotions, and other partner offers, making public transport part of your Liverpool adventure. BUSINESS
UK economic data has been on an improving trend for the last several months and there is a growing sense of optimism among business leaders that we are now through the worst. Unemployment is falling a little faster than expected, and while it may not feel like it, inflation is also easing (2.2% in October). Equity markets are remarkably buoyant, surpassing the peak levels seen in the boom times of 2007 and the level of Merger & Acquisition activity is on the rise once more – a bullish sign. Inevitably, however, there are risks to this nascent recovery. On our doorstep, we have a still-suffering Europe, with the European Central Bank (ECB) recently compelled to cut interest rates even further, to just 0.25% in an effort to kick-start the economy and ward off a growing threat of deflation. A moribund Europe is still a major drag on UK activity, given that it is still our most important single export market. Perhaps the biggest medium-term threat to the UK’s recovery is rising interest rates. The US is likely to be the first major western country to have to raise interest rates, given stronger levels
An Improving
Economic Trend
of economic growth generating concerns over rising inflation. A rate rise in the States in 2015 looks increasingly likely, which would push up rates across the globe. The UK consumer has been in rude health on the back of a collapse in mortgage rates, but can they can sustain such buying if/when interest rates start to rise? The housing market has proven remarkably resilient in the face of the deepest recession since the 1930s and prices are starting to rise again year-on-year. This recovery has received a further fillip from the Government’s ‘Help To Buy Scheme’, but again, it remains to be seen whether this can continue when mortgage rates normalize. This is for the future. In the present, while the good times may not be quite back yet, the next 12-18 months at least look set fair for continued improvements in economic prospects.
