ESSENTIAL INFORMATION
Some information which may be useful during your stay in Amsterdam.
Language
The official language is of course Dutch (Nederlands) but just about everyone speaks fluent English and they are proud to do so. The Dutch language itself sounds at times close to German, but in truth, they are very different.
Weather
Amsterdam enjoys a moderate temperate climate which is influenced by it’s proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. Winters are mild and average above zero degrees. Summers are comfortably warm but seldom hot (although this year was very hot at times).
Money
As with almost all European Union countries, the currency in Holland is the Euro. Before that, the Dutch Guilder was the currency, with two Dutch Guilders coming close to the value of one Euro.
Tipping
The general consenus and indeed it has also been our strategy since we have been here is to leave a 10 – 15 % tip. However, rude and abrupt service is an all to frequent occurance in Amsterdam and never be afraid to abandon a tip if the service is not as it should be.
Car Rental
There are various different car rental companies available in Amsterdam City Centre and of course you can also find care rental at Schiphol Airport. The following company is recommended in Amsterdam: Adams Rent a Car: Tel.: 020-6850111
Changing Money
There are several different outlets where you can change money in Amsterdam. The best
rates are usually offered by post-offices and the various GWK offices are also good. Changing money at your hotel is normally more expensive.
Credit Cards
Most places will accept credit cards, but there are some which don’t, so always enquire first if you intend to pay with plastic. You can also use Cirrus and Maestro cards to withdraw cash from ATM’s.
Media
The national newspaper is De Telegraaf, a broadsheet publication which is available at all newsagents, but is of course printed in Dutch. AKO and Bruna newsagents can be found throughout the city and offer most leading global daily and weekly newspapers
Telephoning
When dialing from abroad, prefix any number you find in our magazine or website with +31 and then 20 for Amsterdam. All public telephones in Amsterdam use a ‘cll card’ system and these can be purchased from post offices and almost all newsagencies. Reduced rates calling cards are also available in these outlets.

Public transport in Amsterdam is among the best in Europe thanks to the constant availability, simplicity, efficiency and punctuality of the services.
TRAMS
Trams operate at regular intervals throughout the entire city center and the outskirts from 6.0am until around 12.30am. You will have to
wait no longer than 10 minutes at the tramstop. You can travel anywhere in the city centre for one hour on any tram for 1.60 Euro. Special strip cards (6,70 Euro), which can last for the duration of your visit can also be purchased from newsagents and supermarkets throughout the city.
TRAIN
The service provided by the Dutch Railway Board is exceptional and all trains will leave at regular intervals on time.
BICYCLES
You'll notice almost immediately, that there is an incredible number of bicycles in Amsterdam. Renting a bike is a great way to see the city and we thoroughly recommend Mike’s Bike Tours for both tours and rental. They can be contacted at 020-6227970
TAXI
The recent Governmental decision to liberalize taxis has had its advantages and disadvantages. On the positive side, there are twice as many taxis on the streets, but many of them charge too much. We have always found TCA to be reliable and they can be contacted at 020-6777777. A novel taxi trip can be enjoyed on one of the city's many bicycle taxi's and the price is also fair and the drivers are usually polite.
AMSTERDAM PASS
This is a novel and cost-efficient way to take advantage of all Amsterdam has to offer. The Amsterdam pass lasts for either 24, 48 or 72 hours and provides a free round trip of the canals. Almost all of the museums can also be visited for free and the pass entitles the bearer to reductions at various restaurants and attractions. The pass is available from the AmsterdamTourist Office and also from many hotels in the city.

The one major down side to the club scene in Amsterdam is the strict and often nasty door policy. In many places, if you don't look good, you don't get in and also try to act respectably when you approach the door.

SMOKING SCENE COFFEESHOPS SMOKING BULL
Amsterdam’s Smoking Scene
Since the 70s, Holland has had the most liberal marihuana laws in Europe, but some of you may be surprised to learn that it's not strictly legal here, just tolerated. This may seem ludicrously hypocritical, as there are over 300 licensed coffee shops in Amsterdam alone. When we say coffeeshop in Amsterdam, we refer to an establishment where you can buy hash and weed etc and also smoke it inside the shop. Marihuana is not dangerous, but it is a drug and doesn't suit everyone. You will also see various hemp and mushroom shops around the city and even if you are not going to consume what they offer, these places are still worth a look. If you're wondering around the city centre, you are almost certain to be harassed by shady characters offering cocaine, extasy, acid etc. Avoid them at all costs. These guys are never genuine and neither are their goods. And please note: No matter what kind of soft drug flicks your switch, the chances are that it is much stronger in Amsterdam, so be careful.

Lange Niezel 13 Situated on Lange Niezel Street, just off Warmoesstraat and in the heart of the Red Light District, Smoking Bull Coffeeshop is one of the best we have encountered in the Red Light area or any other area of the city for that matter. The spacious and attractive venue has always been a popular haunt for visitors and once inside you will understand why. The décor is outstanding with the murals and paintings giving an eastern flavour. Perks of the place include an extensive drinks menu (alcohol included), a pool table, plasma TV screens, Sky Sports coverage, a chill-out area, internet access and they also serve light snacks. The venue is extremely popular during sporting events and definitely is among the better coffeeshops in Amsterdam and the added bonus for many, is that it is the heart of the Red Light District.

However, that still didn’t stop them from naming a new brand as ‚Ocean’s Haze’. Its the extraordinary décor which makes De Dampkring stand out from most others. Both inside and outside are moulded, sculpted, studded and painted bright colours. The overall effect is quite stunning. The venue is also spacious and boasts a licensed alcohol bar as well.

As you peruse around Amsterdam, you will no doubt notice the large number of smart shops the city has to offer. Some are small and a little bit dingy, while the service in some of the others leaves much to be desired, but the Magic Magic Mushroom
An outside view of the Magic Mushroom Gallery
Gallery's on Spuistraat and Singel answer every call and are always worth a visit. But what are 'smart drugs', you may be asking yourself, so we'll attempt a short explanation. Most mind altering substances are classified as either 'soft' or hard 'drugs', but there is also a third group of so called 'smart drugs', which fall into neither of those two categories. Smart drugs are completely legal and consist of herbs and natural ingredients. When taken, they are said to increase energy levels, aid relaxation or enhance sexual performance, depending on which one you choose. Smart drugs shops have sprang up all around the world to satisfy this market, but as with almost everything else, Amsterdam has a slightly different twist to many other countries, in that the city is also permitted to sell hallucinogenic mushrooms. The Magic Mushroom Gallery on Spuistraat is the perfect place to begin your quest for mind expansion. The space is bigger than it's competitors, allowing customers to explore and learn in a comfortable and pleasant atmosphere. They also own
another smaller, but equally interesting store at the Flower Market (Singel 524) and one of the big advantages for potential customers is that they supply a wholesale service. NAUGHTY AMSTERDAM
The most famous X-rated venue on the planet. Even the Pope is aware of what goes on at this place. Located in the area known as 'Wallen', it dates back to the 13th century, making it one of the oldest parts of the city. Prostitution has always been rife in the area, but it wasn't until the 18th century that the window ladies appeared. At that time, Amsterdam's port was extremely busy and sailors would visit the area seeking intoxication and the ladies of the night. Much has changed since then, but contrary to many reports, it isn't as sleazy or unsafe as most people imagine. The area is quite busy during the day, and when darkness falls, the atmosphere becomes vibrant and a fun time is guaranteed. The district has just about everything a sex haven requires. Live sex shows, peep shows, sexual theme bars, sex shops,
Amsterdam’s Red Light District
porno video booths, lap dancing clubs, a sex museum and of course the infamous girls behind the windows. We have visited many of the venues in the area and have given our opinion on them. Enjoy the delights of this area and whatever you do, don't stop at these red lights! The Red Light Ladies This is one form of window-shopping that never bores a man. Sales and discount offers don't exist, but the quality of the merchandise can be most pleasing on the 46
eye as some of the finest girls you will ever see await your custom. The majority of the Red Light Ladies are extremely beautiful and hail from all corners of the world. Choose from Oriental, Latin-American, European and coloured girls and enjoy oral sex and sexual intercourse for an average price of 50 Euro. All the hookers (hoertjes) are legal and most undergo regular health checks. In The Red Light District, it's true to say that the world's oldest profession has undergone major modernization work. However, certain rules must be adhered to, so take a look at our article below. Better Safe Than SORRY PROSTITUTES Remember, sex is business for them, so be polite and courteous. PS. Bodyguards, despite not being visible are always close at hand PHOTOGRAPHS Taking photographs of the girls is forbidden. Break this rule, your film or camera could be confiscated or even destroyed. BLACK CORNER 'Black Corner' is situated near the old church and is easily recognizable as the ladies are all coloured. Some of them will open their door as you walk by and offer bargain deals. Don’t fall for their tricks. UNSAFE SEX Don't make a fool of yourself by asking for sex without a condom. It doesn't happen. CHARLIE BOYS - These are the numerous individuals selling hard drugs on the black market. Most of them are harmless, but their goods can often be damaging. Just say no and walk away. DISPLAYING YOUR ASSETS - this doesn't mean you have to keep your zipper closed, it's a simple warning against thieves, so don't keep your wallet or money in a place which is easily accessible. Best if you only carry the money you require for that night.

THE CASA ROSSO EXPERIENCE
Theatre Casa Rosso is one of the many erotic establishments in the Red Light area which is managed by the Janot Entertainment Group. The company are also in charge of the infamous Banana Bar, peep show theatres and sex shops. The most famous of all their venues is the world renowned Casa Rosso live sex theatre. The main theatre is situated near the center of
a banana from a soft, moist and private area. Peep Show Walk into one of the several small booths in the peep show theatre, insert two Euro into the slot and look at live sex acts. Erotic Museum The museum is located across the road from The Banana Bar and offers a trip through the different ages of sex.
STRIPTEASE
Believe it or not, there are only two striptease bars in Amsterdam at the moment. There used to be four, but the other two have closed for different reasons. Striptease shows can be watched in the tiny Selina’s Bar on Thorbeckeplein and an American style bar dancing club called La Vie En Proost in the heart of The Red Light District. Another alternative is to visit Guapa Bar on Thorbeckeplein, which has recently opened with Go-Go dancers and can be a lot of fun.
Adult Shopping
O.Z. Achterburgwal (the main canal of the Red Light District). Live sex is the order of the day at Casa Rosso as they present a series of shows and erotic acts. The main programme starts at around 8.0pm and entrance fee also includes free drinks'. Banana Bar Without doubt one of the highlights of a trip to The Red Light District is a visit to the Banana Bar. The drinks are poured by a group of topless barmaids and just when you think pub-life can't get any better, it does. For an additional fee of around 50 Euro, the same waitresses will perform a series of sexual favours. The 50 Euro fee can be split between your group and gives up to four people the chance to sample the kinky delights including the consumption of 48
Purchasing goods in Amsterdam’s huge number of sex shops is almost always less expensive than what you would pay at home – afterall, with so much competition around, prices have to be competitive. However, it isn’t really about the money. It’s more to do with the sense of freedom you enjoy when you enter. Browse around one of these shops in your home city and you almost always feel uncomfortable, but there is no stigma attached to adult shopping in Amsterdam. One down side to the whole sex shop industry is that many of the staff tend to be ignorant and rude – if they are, walk away and find a more staff-friendly shop.

PRIVATE CLUBS Societe Anonyme
Our team has visited a number of Amsterdam's sex clubs over the past few months, and some of them have made a good impression. However, it has been difficult to find anything to top Societe Anonyme. The reasons for this are quite simple. When you visit a sex club, the four main things you look for are comfort, cleanliness, value for money and above all attractive girls Societe Anonyme boasts all these attributes. All rooms possess large Jacuzzi baths, plasma screens and a huge selection of adult and Hollywood movies. History Of The Bar
“About 10 years ago, we came up with the idea of starting a sports café which would show several different games at one time and today that idea has grown into reality. In the beginning, we started with just one floor, six sports channels and one sound system, while our food menu comprised of just toasties and chips. Back then, we had no idea that the bar would turn out to be such a huge success. The first signs of our popularity appeared on a Sunday night when we screened live NFL and such was the size of the crowd, we could not let people inside any more and they were forced to watch from the screens outside. As time progressed, we witnessed similar situations with other sports like soccer, Ice Hockey, basketball and rugby. To cater to this kind of demand we had to expand our sports coverage and improve our food menu. At present we can show action from 30 different sports channels at the same time, while our kitchen serves an extensive menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We 56
Our ground floor boasts table seating for around 70 people and an additional 25 can sit at the bar area. The first floor includes a full size bar and table seating for an additional 80-90people. The first floor also provides an excellent view onto the lively Leidseplein.
The Terrace
Our outdoor terrace provides seating for more than 80 people band it offers the perfect view onto the bustling Leidseplein and the various forms of street entertainment and street vendors. Another bonus is that you can also view the games from our terrace thanks to the perfect positioning of our screens.
The TVs and screens
No matter where you sit (upstairs or downstairs, inside or outside) you are certain to have a screen near you. We even have a screen in the toilet. Our sound system is also state of the art and when the games are not on, you can enjoy our extensive and varied music.
