Inside this guide, you will find various details about our cafe as well as some useful information about our city. Satellite Sports Cafe was established about 14 years ago and since then, we have strived to make our bar one of the most entertaining in Amsterdam. Our cafe is located on the corner of the famous Leidseplein, the city’s most vibrant entertainment area. Trams 1,2,5,7 and 10 will leave you almost at our doorstep. Our promises are simple. Firstly, we guarantee that you will receive a friendly welcome and secondly, we guarantee more sports than any other venue in the city. If it’s on anywhere in the world, the chances are that we can show it! There have been major developments since the last magazine was published and we have now extended our Café by opening a second venue directly next-door on Korte Leidsedwarsstraat. The new venue is a super-modern facility which maintains all the same delights as the original Sports Café. We are extremely proud of our new baby and we look forward to welcoming you there. Every night is also a party night at the Sports Cafe and our enthusiastic and beautiful staff are always keen to join the party and ensure we have one of the most fun-filled bars in Amsterdam. The spring season promises to be extra special in the Sports Café, as we reach the climax of all of the major European football

leagues, and start gearing up towards World Cup 2014 in Brazil. All in all, it looks certain to be a memorable spring season and if you happen to be in Amsterdam for the King’s Birthday celebrations on Saturday 26th April, you are in for a real treat. Up until this year, the Dutch always celebrated Queen’s day, but the inauguration of the new King last year means a change in title. King’s Day will officially be celebrated on 27 April (the King’s birthday). The main going-out areas tend to be Leidseplein, Rembrandtplein, Dam Square and the Red Light District, all of which offer varied forms of entertainment. Amsterdam is also an extremely easy city to get around thanks to the excellent public transport system, which is punctual and effective. In this part of our magazine we will give you some sound advice on the best events, restaurants, bars, attractions and museums as well as some essential information and telephone numbers which could come in useful during your stay. Changing Money
The official language is of course Dutch (Nederlands) but just about everyone speaks fluent English and they are proud to do so. The Dutch language itself sounds at times close to German, but in truth, they are very different.
There are several different outlets where you can change money in Amsterdam. The best rates are usually offered by post-offices and the various GWK offices are also good. Changing money at your hotel is normally more expensive.

Amsterdam enjoys a moderate temperate climate which is influenced by it’s proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. Winters are mild and average above zero degrees. Summers are comfortably warm but seldom hot (although this year was very hot at times).
When dialing from abroad, prefix any number you find in our magazine or website with +31 and then 20 for Amsterdam. All public telephones in Amsterdam use a ‘call card’ system and these can be purchased from post offices and almost all newsagencies. Reduced rates calling cards are also available in these outlets.
Credit Cards Most places will accept credit cards, but there are some which don’t, so always enquire first if you intend to pay with plastic. You can also use Cirrus and Maestro cards to withdraw cash from ATM’s.
Money As with almost all European Union countries, the currency in Holland is the Euro. Before that, the Dutch Guilder was the currency, with two Dutch Guilders coming close to the value of one Euro.

Parking One of the biggest eye sores in the city. Suffice to say that parking can be a nightmare in Amsterdam and it is also quite expensive. If you are parking along the canals, be sure to pay at one of the nearby meters, because wardens are always on the look-out.

Public Transport Public transport in Amsterdam is among the best in Europe thanks to the constant availability, simplicity, efficiency and punctuality of the services.

A novel taxi trip can be enjoyed on one of the city's many bicycle taxis and the price is also fair and the drivers are usually polite.
Trams operate at regular intervals throughout the entire city center and the outskirts from 6.0am until around 12.30am. You will have to wait no longer than 10 minutes at the tramstop. You can travel anywhere in the city centre for one hour on any tram for 2.60 Euro. Special 24-hour tickets can also be purchased from newsagents, or on the trams themselves.

The service provided by the Dutch Railway Board is exceptional and all trains will leave at regular intervals on time.

hether it is Chinese or Italian, Thai or typical Dutch fare you are looking for, worry not, because Amsterdam has over 1000 restaurants catering for the tastes and budgets of every tourist. Spring is once again in the air, so many of these restaurants will reopen their terraces making outdoor dining a possibility. Unlike many other countries in Europe, the needs of vegetarians are well catered for in The Netherlands. Dining in this diverse and vibrant city can range from fast food to haute cuisine with every nation faithfully represented. The city boasts stylish and top quality restaurants as well as traditional Amsterdam cafés, Dutch pancake houses and steakhouses. Even less well known cuisines countries like Tibet, Ethiopia and Morocco can be found. Seafood and particularly herring is extremely popular in the Netherlands and no doubt during your visit, you will see

numerous herring vendors on the city streets. Locals love their raw haring sandwich with pickle and onion and they swear to its health benefits also. No visit to Amsterdam is complete without trying a fresh herring – you will either love it or hate it. Bitterballen are another Dutch speciality which are worth trying. Those who prefer the fast and effective variety of food, are also well catered for, as Amsterdam boasts an incredible amount of fast-food outlets. Almost everywhere you look, you see establishments offering goodies such as burgers, pizzas, shoarma, kebabs, noodles. Spring is in the air again and that also signals the return of the city’s famed outdoor terraces which offer a unique and entertaining way to enjoy your meal. Service is friendly and the staff will go out of their way to make sure visit is a pleasant one. The customers are normally young and diverse and thiss is also reflected by the atmosphere. It is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, not to mention morning coffee and after-dinner drinks.

An added perk is the quality service, as the staff at Players go out of their way to make sure your every need is catered for. An added perk is that the venue boasts one of the most modern and funky lounge terraces in the city. Definitely worth a visit.

Floating Flower Market
One of Amsterdam’s most popular attractions, The Heineken Experience closed for renovations last October, but it is set to open again this summer and things will be bigger and better than before, as new attractions such as a mini brewery, a Tasting Bar and a tour of the Shire horses stables have been added to the many other attractions which include experiencing the speed of a bottling line as an actual bottle of Heineken. Of course no trip to the brewery is complete without a bit of personal testing.
The floating flower market is the only one of its kind in the world and is also one of the most colorful and fragrant places of interest in Amsterdam at any time of year. It is unique in that the merchandise is displayed on floating barges. Located on the famous Singel Canal, the market was first held in 1862 and has since developed into the bestknown flower market in Holland. Its along the same street that you can also find the world famous Amsterdam Christmas shop.

The basement is the ideal spot for those who want to have a bet for fun while upstairs, you will find the main floor of the casino. where the big spenders gather for roulette, blackjack etc. The first floor is also home to the casino's magnificent restaurant.

The Secret Annex has been preserved in its authentic state. Quotations from the diary, photographs, films and original objects - belonging to the people in hiding and those who helped them - all serve to illustrate the events that occurred at this location. Anne's original diary is also on display.

SHOPPING IN AMSTERDAM

ith more than 10,000 shops, almost 150 galleries, more than 150 antique shops and 26 markets, Amsterdam could justifiably be described as a shopping heaven. Designer labels, bargains, jewellery, diamonds, books, antiques….You name it and you will most likely find it in Amsterdam. The main pedestrianised shopping streets are Leidsestraat, Kalverstraat and Nieuwendijk where you will find most of the regular high street stores. Amsterdam also plays host to exclusive shopping areas like PC Hooftstraat, Spiegelstraat, Van Baerlestraat and The Nine Streets where you will come across countless designer boutiques, interior design shops, art galleries and other specialist shops. Most stores open at around 10am (later on Monday mornings) and close at 6pm (5pm on Saturdays).

Thursday is late night shopping in Amsterdam, with most shops staying open until 9pm. Most of the Shopping Malls stay open until 7pm daily (Thursdays 9pm). Those who like quality bargains will definitely have to visit the famous Albert Cuyp Markets which hosts countless shops and stalls. One such shop is called ‘Wear Open’ and it is one of our favourites….see below! WEAR OPEN Albertcuypstraat 117 Wear Open is situated on the street which hosts the world-famous Albert Cuyp Street Market. In their store, you will find the latest fashions from Rome, Milan, Paris at the lowest prices. Besides clothing they are also known for our ridiculous low prices for the newest boots and bags. The store is open 6 days a week from 9.00 am till17.00 pm. The area is easily accessible by public transport and trams 4, 16, 24 and 25 will get you there.

SMOKING SCENE
Amsterdam’s Smoking Scene
Since the 70s, Holland has had the most liberal marihuana laws in Europe, but some of you may be surprised to learn that it's not strictly legal here, just tolerated. When we say coffeeshop in Amsterdam, we refer to an establishment where you can buy hash and weed etc. Despite the new tobacco law which was introduced in July 2008, many coffeeshops offer smoking rooms, meaning you can still enjoy your spliff inside. Marihuana is not dangerous, but it is a drug and doesn't suit everyone. You will also see various hemp and mushroom shops around the city and even if you are not going to consume what they offer, these places are still worth a look.
COFFEESHOPS Grey Area
Sint Nicolaasstraat 41 Grey Area is probably the closest thing to what an American shop would be if laws in the U.S. were as progressive as they are in Amsterdam. While quite small in size, they make up for that with an emphasis on quality and value. Inside you will find 28
friendly staff, eclectic music selection, and plenty of devices to make your visit a memorable one. The stoner-operators welcome visitors from around the world who are searching for a fun and open environment. De Dampkring
Handboogstraat 29. The coffeeshop which featured in the Hollywood blockbuster ‚Ocean’s 12’, De Dampkring has long been regarded as one of Amsterdam’s elite coffeeshops, and it wasn’t just during filming that Brad Pitt and George Clooney visited because they are said to be quite regular visitors.

Kerkstraat 51 If ever a name was suited to a coffeeshop, this is it, because at Happy Feelings On Kerkstraat (close to Leidseplein), the feelgood factor is never-ending. The interior manages to be trendy, yet at the same time cosy and relaxed and their products are said to be among the finest you will find in the city. The new ban on smoking tobacco in public has made life difficult for many lovers of Amsterdam’s soft-drugs scene, but Happy Feelings have the perfect solution courtesy of their smoking garden. Stone’s Café
Warmoesstraat 91 An extremely popular venue among English speaking tourists and it’s easy to understand why as Stone's Café is a coffeeshop where you will never get bored. The spacious venue is located in the heart of the famous Warmoesstraat Street in the Red Light District and among other things,
boasts an extensive menu and very reasonable prices. The staff are always friendly and helpful and the atmosphere is always good. An added bonus for visitors is that they have all the big sports channels, meaning you can watch all the major sporting events.
Other attractions inside the shop include two pool tables. They also serve some excellent pub grub and it’s a good place to go for your typical English breakfast.
