6 month Snapshot Summary The individuals served by Above and Beyond are primarily African American males from Chicago. Amongst the Chicago Community Areas, the majority of clients served identified addresses located within: Austin, Humboldt Park, East Garfield Park, West Garfield Park, and North Lawndale. Despite accounting for roughly one quarter of the individuals served by Above and Beyond, women attend groups at higher rates than the men served by ANB. The majority of clients served have never been married and have at least one child. Regardless of gender, roughly two thirds of both male and female clients served are unemployed and report no income upon admission. Per client self- reporting at intake, cannabis and alcohol are the two most commonly reported primary substances of choice. Following intake, individuals are assessed for needs, assigned a therapist, and work together to create a treatment plan. The client treatment plan serves as a guide as to the number and types of groups and other supportive services a client should attend. Just over two thirds (68%) of clients served matriculate from screening to attend at least one group. Of those who matriculate to group, just over 30% of clients complete their Treatment plan and move to program graduation. The purpose of this report is to provide an overview of the data collected and stored within Kipu (Above and Beyond’s data management system). In doing so, the information from this report can be used to drive the work forward in two critical areas: 1) Develop a learning agenda to guide performance management by setting knowledge and information priorities. Ex: a) Who did we reach? b) Are we creating a therapeutic environment that fosters recovery? c) How do the clients we serve grow or change? 2) Identify gaps in regards to data collection and enhancement.

Client Profile Who we serve Gender Just under three quarters of clients served are male.
Age While the average age of clients served is 38.9, as the chart below indicates, just over 50% of clients are under the age of 40. Nearly three quarters (73.3%) of clients are male. This distribution remains relatively constant across all age groups. However, when broken down by gender, we see proportionally more white women (33%) are served than black women (25%).
3
Race The majority of clients (72.4%) are Black, with the next largest demographic served being white (20%).
Marital status The majority (nearly three-quarters) of both male and female clients served by Above and Beyond have never been married. While less than 10% of men and 10% of women are married at the time of intake, a greater percentage of men served are married.
4
Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Clients are not asked to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity upon intake. Number of children (if any) The majority (over 95%) of clients served by Above and Beyond have at least one child. There does not appear to be a significant difference between men and women in terms of the percent of clients with a given number of children. While roughly 50% of men and women have only one child, just under one fifth (18.2%) of clients served have 4 or more children.

Annual income Upon intake clients are assessed for their annual income. More than 50% of both men and women indicate no annual income. 35% of clients reported between $5,000-$49,000. Notably, while women account for only 26% of clients served, of the clients reporting income, a greater percentage of females report an income than males.
Employment Status Two thirds of both male and female clients served are unemployed. Overall, 115 clients (17%) indicated full time employment at the point of intake.
6
Education level The majority of clients served (83%) have a high school diploma or less. 43% of clients indicated a high school diploma (12th grade) as their highest level of education. Comparatively more women than men indicated having more than 12th grade (27% of women indicated more than 12th grade, whereas only 19% of men indicated having more than 12th grade).
Housing status Upon intake clients are asked about their housing status. The majority of clients self-report living in a home they own or rent or home someone else owns or rents. 13% (87 clients) indicated currently living in a shelter. Of the clients living in shelters, they are disproportionately female (28.7% of females vs 13% of males).
7
Veteran Status Eight of the clients served indicated Veteran status (7 men, and 1 woman). The average age of the eight veterans is 54 years old. (The oldest veteran is 68 and the youngest is 38).

Summary: During the 6 month period of January 1, 2019- June 30, 2019, Above and Beyond conducted 678 client intakes. At the point of intake, clients are asked to provide their home address. Four maps are provided to give a sense of spread and density of clients served by geographic location. Out-of-state client addresses are not shown above, however 3 clients provided addresses outside the state of Illinois. Those included: Indiana, Missouri, and Mississippi. Outliers aside, 91% of clients served during the specified time period provided a Chicago address and the remaining 9% represent 38 different suburban localites (listed below). Amongst the suburban areas, 4 communities—Berwyn, Cicero, Elmwood Park, and Oak Park— sent 3 or more clients each during the beginning half of 2019. Amongst the Chicago Community Areas, the majority of clients served identified addresses located within: Austin, Humboldt Park, East Garfield Park, West Garfield Park, and North Lawndale. Maps 3 and 4 provide a more detailed view of client spread across the Chicago community areas. Also worth noting, 5 clients did not provide an address and instead indicated “homeless” and are thus not represented on the maps.

Referral Sources Above and Beyond’s primary referral sources are the criminal justice system, shelters/local nonprofits, and word of mouth (either walk-ins or family and friend referrals). Within these categories, the criminal justice system (adult probation and parole) accounts for the majority of clients (disproportionately male) served by Above and Beyond.
While ANB averages 75-100 referrals by month, as the chart below shows, there was an uptick in referrals in the months of April and May. While adult parole typically accounts for the highest proportion of referrals, the increased number of referrals in April and May were primarily on account of an increased number of referrals from adult parole.
12
What our clients’ presenting conditions are Substance of choice Upon intake clients are assessed for their history of substance use, severity of use, substance(s) of choice, and any underlying health (and mental health) conditions. Per the intake summary, clients self reported cannabis and alcohol use at the highest rates. However, upon further evaluation, staff typically find additional substances of preference. This is indicative of some of the challenges associated with providing substance abuse treatment services. Much of the initial assessment data is dependent on self-report data from clients and thus from a scientific perspective it is harder to develop a precise understanding of the true scope of client needs (as opposed to traditional medical assessments, which are arguably more subjective.

Trends over time
Above and Beyond averages 750 client interactions per month. There was a mild spike in interactions in February on a account of a moderately higher than normal volume of wellness checks and bus card distribution. As a proportion of total interactions, wellness checks spiked in June, accounting for nearly 50% of client interactions that month. Also of note, admit notes were not recorded after April. This is because ...

Services we Provide
Above and Beyond tracks client interactions in Kipu. As detailed above As Above and Beyond prides itself on ensuring every effort is made to support participant wellbeing even after the point of graduation, ANB continues to invest time in following up on routine wellness checks. While interaction time and intensity varies by interaction type, it is worth noting, over 10% of client interactions were spent on follow-up calls on clients that were admitted to ANB prior to 2019. This is reflective of a recovery oriented system of care which supports long-term investments in participant care management. Once an individual is actively enrolled in ANB’s programming, in addition to the ongoing support received through individual and group counselling, clients remain engaged in ongoing evaluation and support. On average clients receive 5 interactions (of any of the types listed in the chart above).
15
Group Therapy Summary Above and Beyond Family Recovery Center provides a wide range of group and individual treatment services. The number of groups a client must attend is determined by multiplying the number of symptoms that were identified from the DSM-5 by a count of 7, yielding a dividend. Then we would use a divisor chosen from the Stage of Change that we determine the client is at: 3 for Maintenance; 2 for both Action and Preparation; and 1 for both Contemplation and Precontemplation. With a minimum of 25 (any quotient less than 25 would round up to 25) and a maximum of 77 (no matter what the SOC), this algorithm becomes is a very rudimentary way in which you can calculate the hours that would be necessary for a Treatment Plan. Clients are then able to select from an available list of group sessions offered to determine the mix of classes that best supports their recovery interests. The chart below indicates the groups attended at the highest rate during the January 1, 2019- June 30, 2019 time period. According to the graph below, the most popular group sessions are: AA facilitation, SMART recovery, Trauma Pt. 1, and Visible Voices.
16
Above and Beyond offers 45 different group types. Clients have considerable flexibility over the the specific groups they attend, The table above provides a duplicated count of the number of clients attending group by month. (In this case, “duplicate count” means “Joe” might attend 3 Spirituality groups in a given month. For each spirituality group Joe attends, he will be counted.) There has been a moderate decrease in groups attended since January. Much of this decrease is attributed to a drop in AA facilition. 621 people attended at least one group session between January 1, 2019 and June 30, 2019. Learning to Love Yourself, Mind, Body, and Soul, Happiness Workshop and Harmony Hope and Healing are some of the top attended sessions by female clients ** Numbers above are reflective of all client sessions January 1, 2019- June 30, 2019 regardless of client intake date.
Above and Beyond’s rich group schedule allows clients to attend a diversity of groups so they are constantly exposed to different modalities and fresh content. While clients typically attend each group once or twice, there are a handful of groups that clients attend multiple times. As the chart above shows, clients attend AA Facilitation and SMART Recovery with a greater average frequency than any other group offered at Above and Beyond. (The average number of attendances per client was calculated for each of the 40+ groups. The selection above represents the 10 groups with the highest average frequency of attendance per client for individuals admitted January 1, 2019- June 30, 2019).
17
There does appear to be a mild association between gender and the groups attended. The chart above shows the average number of sessions attended by gender of the groups with the greatest number of returning clients. Interestingly, the average number of sessions attended in AA Facilitation is higher for women than men. Conversely, the average number of sessions attended of SMART Recovery is higher for men than women. On average both men and women attend 3 sessions of Trauma (parts 1 and 2).
18
The chart above highlights the 10 groups attended with the highest number of unique participants. Given that 74% of the clients served by ANB are men, with the exception of Men for Sobriety and Smart Recovery, women account for a disproportionately high number of individuals attending group. Particularly with Spirituality and AA Facilitation, women are disproportionately more likely to attend than their male counterparts. (The chart above reflects individuals with an intake date between January 1, 2019 and June 30, 2019 and groups conducted during this same time frame)
19
AA Facilitation AA Facilitation is one of the most widely attended groups at Above and Beyond. On average, clients attend 4.36 AA Facilitation sessions. Nearly half (42.8%) of attendees were referred by the criminal justice system. Interestingly, while AA is rooted in alcohol use, less than a third of attendees indicated alcohol was their substance of choice.
20
Graduation Clients graduate Above and Beyond after completing their Treatment Plan. Of the 678 clients who completed intake 1/1/2019-6/30/2019, 18.8% have already graduated. This percentage is expected to increase as the year progresses as clients are able to progress through the sequence of services at their own pace. Nearly half (43.8%) of attendees were referred by the criminal justice system.
21
Improv Therapy 113 unduplicated individuals attended Improv Therapy between 1/1/2019- 6/30/2019. As compared to the other well-attended groups, improv therapy serves comparatively less clients referred from the criminal justice system than other targeted classes.
22
SMART Recovery 297 unduplicated individuals attended SMART Recovery between 1/1/20196/30/2019.
23
Methodology Above and Beyond accepts clients on an ongoing basis. Thus, participants can not be assessed in cohort models. Instead, this report provides a snapshot of clients who were intaked between the following dates (January 1, 2019- June 30, 2019). Several clients served during this period were discharged and returned back to Above and Beyond for treatment. As such, some of the metrics pertaining to services provided may include a duplicated client count of clients, as the same client may have utilized the same services during each treatment period. However, to not over account for certain demographics, all metrics pertaining to client demographics reflect an unduplicated count of clients.
