INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION

his portfolio is a collection of my architectural work from 2011-2013 while undertaking the Bachelor of Environments course at the University of Melbourne. Further, the selected works showcase my personal artistic and creative explorations. The works in this portfolio document my journey of exploration into a world where space, technology, abstracted ideas and experiential qualities collide. Architecture has allowed me to challenge preconceived ideas about the world and about people, and has allowed me to engage in further discourse. I have grown immensely during my time at university and look forward to pursuing all that the architectural world has to offer. he brief was to construct a wearable paper lantern inspired by a natural process precedent. I decided to model my lantern after the geometries created when glass shatters. This project was my first exposure to computing methods of design, using Rhino and panelling tools plug-ins to create this form that was then unrolled onto paper and hand cut to reconstruct the physical model.

he ‘boathouse’ is a restaurant, cafe, kiosk and boat hire centre that also includes an administration office, all stationed by the Yarra River. Our studio studied the ‘master’ Mies Van Der Rohe, whose minimalist, rectilinear, clean style utilizing industrial materials of steel and glass was the inspiration behind this project.

The design idea behind this boathouse was to frame different views, achieved primarily using platforms at varying heights. Mies’ love of blurring between interior and exterior spaces is evident in the use of transparent glass and especially in the central void of this building. While Mies was the inspiration, the building also reflects its wooded Australian context in the use of timber, including black stained timber and corten steel.

his was a design for a highway installation commissioned by Wyndham City. The brief called for an ‘eye-catching’ piece that would encourage further discussion surrounding the City of Wyndham as a forward thinking municipality. In this studio, we explored the idea of architecture as a discourse, and were encouraged to learn in particular about parametric design and the role of computation in the architectural design practice. Our designs were produced using Rhino, with the Grasshopper plug-in.

16

This studio project was a group assignment, thus I would like to thank my group members for their contribution to this work. Our design approach was to focus on biomimicry. We studied the work of Neri Oxman and Kokkugia and were further interested in exploring the role of interactive and performative architecture. We decided to incorporate Arduino sensors into our design to allow this architectural installation to become interactive and functional. After some research, the idea for B.E.R.T. was born!

.E.R.T. (Biological Environmentally Responsive Transients) are fictional organisms that behave according to information received from several data sources. This data includes: traffic volume, rainfall and air pollution levels (carbon dioxide levels), These B.E.R.T. organisms present the data in an abstracted way within an online space that shows these organisms projected onto the physical cage structure found on site at Wyndham city. Thus, this project is multi-faceted in its two fold approach, the first being the physical aspect (cage structure) and the second being the virtual aspect (Arduino sensors + website visualisation).

18

The cage structure was designed in Rhino using the Grasshopper plug-in and the geometry and form is dictated on field conditions (as seen in the diagram on the right). It was then exported into 3d coat to be voxelised and finally, 3-d printed as the final scale model. This project gave us the opportunity to learn about sensory technology and we managed to connect the Arduino sensors to Grasshopper within Rhino through the Firefly plug-in. We were able to take real-time data and visualize it in virtual space.

he brief was to design a theatre based on the Sherlock Holmes series, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, to be situated at the corner of Spencer and Bourke Streets in Melbourne’s CBD. The building comprised of a 250-seat cinema, a 250-seat black box theatre and a 500-seat proscenium theatre, as well as a restaurant and bar, and ample functional back of house services including dressing rooms, offices, rehearsal spaces and a carpentry workshop. The final design shown here was inspired by the classic film noir image of the proganist pulling back PRODUCED BY AN AUTODESK EDUCATIONAL PRODUCT the blinds and peeking through to see glimpses of the mysterious figures on the other side.

he brief was to design a set for a scene from “Sherlock Holmes the play by Arthur Gillette and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, that was to be performed in an experimental black box theatre. The concept for this design was for a modular, transformable set present on-stage for the duration of the play. Main prop boxes transform from black to white at the beginning of each scene in order to be used by the actors, and the boxes are able to be stacked and shifted too. The design seeks to explore changing levels, movement and flexibility in set design.
