@RubinMuseum #OurPower
DEAR MEMBERS AND FRIENDS It’s already the final season of our yearlong exploration of power. Our thematic journey has led to big conversations in the Museum about the power within and between us, from discussions about privilege and mental health to talks about tapping into our unconscious minds. Our exhibitions have also showed us the power of objects and self-expression. I recommend visiting Clapping with Stones: Art and Acts of Resistance to see how contemporary artists explore power that often goes unseen. As we close out the year, we’re taking a closer look at those who challenge conventional thinking and embrace non-conformity. In November we’ll be highlighting the lifelong work of Bangladeshi photographer, writer, and activist Shahidul Alam. Shahidul Alam: Truth to Power is a powerful show about humankind, compassion, and an individual whose impact reverberates beyond Bangladesh. Moving beyond the galleries, this fall The Power of Non-Conformity series invites us to learn from people who have introduced alternative ways of thinking. We’ll be screening Becoming Nobody, a new film about Ram Dass; hearing from former dominatrix and Taoist nun Kasia Urbaniak; and much more. And our ever popular Dream-Over will return in December. Join us for a night in the Museum and uncover the power of dreams. My hope is that you leave the Rubin feeling inspired to continue considering your own power and what that means to you. We are planning more exciting programs for next year that engage with big ideas about the world, and we rely on your generous support to make this vision a reality. I hope you’ll strengthen your connection to the Rubin by making a year-end donation or gifting a membership to a loved one. I hope to see you soon at one of our events!

SHAHIDUL ALAM: TRUTH TO POWER OPENS NOVEMBER 8 OPENING NIGHT CELEBRATION, 6:00–11:00 PM Shahidul Alam: Truth to Power presents the first comprehensive U.S. museum survey of Shahidul Alam, the renowned Bangladeshi photographer, writer, activist, and institution-builder. This pioneering exhibition presents a nuanced view of Bangladesh and South Asia, exploring systems of personal and collective agency and underscoring the importance of self-representation, empowerment, and truth as embodied in Alam’s life and work.

POWER Within and Between Us
Over forty images and ephemera will show the breadth of his practice and the impact of his four-decade career. The exhibition includes portraits, landscapes, and scenes of daily life, strife, and resistance in the “majority world”—a phrase Alam has used since the 1990s to reframe the notion of the “third world” or “global south.” Listen to interviews with the artist on The Rubin audio guide app.

The installation rotates every two years to highlight each of the four major Tibetan religious traditions. This rendition features the Kagyu tradition and includes images of buddhas, bodhisattvas, tantric deities, protectors, and teacher portraits specific to the branches of this tradition.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR! BRAINWAVE TICKETS GO ON SALE MEMBER PRESALE: JANUARY 7–8, 2020 GENERAL SALE: JANUARY 9, 2020 You live inside your head every day, but do you understand how it works? Brainwave, the Rubin’s longest-running program series, investigates how our minds shape our everyday experiences, incorporating Eastern and Western philosophies, science, art, and other disciplines. Every spring a unique theme unifies the Rubin Museum’s programs, including onstage conversations between neuroscientists and notable personalities, films, and immersive experiences.
ABOUT THE RUBIN The Rubin Museum of Art opened to the public in 2004 and is an arts and cultural hub in New York City’s vibrant Chelsea neighborhood that inspires visitors to make connections between contemporary life and the art and ideas of the Himalayas and neighboring regions. Through thought-provoking exhibitions presented across six gallery floors and programs in a state-of-theart theater, including films, concerts, and onstage conversations, the Rubin provides immersive experiences that encourage personal discovery and spark new ways of seeing the world. Emphasizing cross-cultural connections, the Rubin opens windows to inner and outer worlds. General operating support of the Rubin Museum of Art is provided by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, as well as by generous donations from the Museum’s Board of Trustees, individual donors and members.
