FI N DI N G STABI L I T Y I N I N STABI L I T Y Cuenca, Ecuador Thesis - Naomi Frangos
Today we live in the Anthropocene age, where the human presence has the strongest influence on our geology. The Natural and un-natural factors causing landslides has resulted in enormous fatalities in many susceptible regions around the world. The human desire to build and not properly cultivate their terrain strains the environment while it tries to adapt to human life. The effects of human interventions to accommodate urbanization on mountainous terrains has triggered more landslide disasters than our natural geological forces. By simply restraining the terrain with bandage like features it only promises further programmatic instability on landslide prone terrains. Living on a landslide prone area has prevented rural communities from experiencing modern life outside of the City. So how do we provide rural areas of Cuenca with programmatic infrastructure and physical infrastructure while at the same time understanding that nature will do what it wants? How can physical infrastructure be an occupiable space that brings human experience closer to nature, that informs the visitor about engaging with the landscape in conscientious ways, and behaves as an element that provides stability in fragile terrain and aids in its healing while avoiding further destruction?

BEE HIVES
TERMITE MOUNDS
WEAVER BIRD colonies are elaborate woven nests. The male birds build these nest to attract possible mates. Once the the courtship is over they mate and produce ofspring. The ofspring of each family is provided with helpers. These helpers are future breaders in training. They help keep the nest structurally stable, feed the chicks, and protect the nest from predators. Nests can have up to 100 families of weavers for about a century. The structure is built in a way to keep tempreatures inside cool during the day and warm during the night. The entrances to the nests are located at the bottom to make it diicult for snakes or other animals to enter.
HONEY BEE colony may have over 80,000 bees. The colony has a strict social order which is the queen, drone, and workers. The structure of the honeycomb is composed of hexagonal cells of beeswax. Each hexagonal cell stores nectar, honey, and larvae. The bees constructure the comb in a series of layers with communicative passages throughout the system. The comb folds to provide maximum structural capacity.
TERMITE MOUNDS are self-cooling mounds created by decomposition of plant materials. This makes the mound soil more fertile than other soil. The termites also have a strict social order which is the king and queen, soliders, and workers. The termites farm a fungus that most be kept at 87 degrees. Inorder to keep it at that tempreature the structure of the mound has an opening at the peak of the mound and smaller chimneys at te base to allow air into the mound. The food is typically stored at the bottom of the mound along with the nursery galleries and the below that the queens space. The foraging tunnels sketch across large areas of the site.

1. PHASE
25’ X 25’ As a respomse to the fragile situation in landslide prone regions, I am proposing a 25’ X 25’ system that attaches to the bedrock located 68’ below grade. 25‘ X 25’ system has the least impact on the raven minimizing damage during construction. This adjustable infrastructure can double or triple depending on the needs of the rural region. The diferent sets are 25’ X 25’ , 25’ X 37‘-6” , 25’ X 50’, and 25’ X 75’.
2. PHASE MAN MADE + ORGANIC INFRASTRUCTURE This adjustable infrastructure also allows trees and small vegitation to grow along the volumes. The 25’ x 25’ system keeps the roots away from the man made structure while helping the soil in place. The combination of indigenous trees and shrubs will mediate the water intake and provide homes for wildlife.
3. PHASE NATURAL SELF-SEED Once the indigenous trees and shrubs are planted in the designated position a forest will naturally self-seed and take over within a period of around 600 to 1,000 years. A mature native forest can be seen in ten years.
PLAZA DE LAS FLORES The beauty, explosion of color, variety of lowers, and aroma engulf the guzho raven. The plants are speciically chosen to protect the ground surface from direct rain but also provides its dwellers with a nourishing plant substance. You can see its features from a distance. Shining high above the tree line. The structure plays hide and seek among the trees. The vegetation cloaks the important and coherent parts of the site as if the buildings have grown here and there. While walking up the face of the raven you can see people and nature in a lively choreographic sequence. This draws man closer to the seasons, to live with the climate, winter, autumn, to live in the moment. I pause and think for a moment that this landscape existed before me. If the landscape is sad it was already sad before me. So today its form and mood were here waiting for me long before I existed. Carmen de Guzho has been waiting for me on the outskirts for me forever‌
From where I’m standing I can see the boundary of the city. The sun is fixed in the center and the clouds galloping over this majestic mountain. I’m hidden among the roots of the structure huddled within a space. I could no longer discern the origin of anything. I am no longer a spectator.
I have become the dweller of the raven that functions as a cavity into which I aspire to disappear. Awakening from this experience I speak of a proud oak that is the connection of all my aspirations of purity using imaginacion and their justification for the world. The connections are never placed in consistent spaces and times but in relationships to their territory. Here the proud oak can surround man with indeterminate spaces that provoke feelings and experiences once unindulged.
Although the eyes of men rest on things without attempting to penetrate them these connections are models of our heart. This thing I call heart encrusts us, judges us, and ensures our salvation forever..........

A BRANCH OF MATHEMATICS THAT DEALS WITH LINES, POINTS, AND ANGLES AS WELL AS SOLIDS AND VOIDS. FORMAS LIBRES IS A DESIGN THAT TAKES THE FORM OF THESE GEOMETRIC SHAPES TO CREATE READING AREAS, COMMUNAL AREAS, AND OTHER AMENTITIES USEFUL TO THE RED HOOK COMMUNITY. THE LIBRARY WILL BETTER SERVE THIS VIBRANT AND EXPANDING COMMUNITY OF RED HOOK BROOKLYN.

RED HOOK HAS EVOLVED INTO A DIVERSE NEIGHBORHOOD THAT HAS TAKEN OVER THE OLD INDUSTRIAL BUILDINGS AND BECOME A SMALL SATELLITE COMMUNITY FOR ARTISANS, CRAFTAMAN, DESIGNERS, AND INNOVATORS. SOME OF RED HOOK'S BIGGEST SETBACKS TO EXPLODING INTO A DEFINED 'MAKER’, DISTRICT INCLUDE PROBLEMS WITH ZONING, ACCESSIBILITY TO THE WATERFRONT, FLOODING, POOR TRANSPORTATION, AND THE LACK OF PLACES TO DISPLAY THE ARTWORK. HURRICANE SANDY LEFT RED HOOK SEVERAL FEET UNDERWATER AND THE RESIDENTS HAD LITTLE TO NO BASIC AMENITIES TO HELP THEM DURING THE STORM. TO PREVENT FUTURE FLOODING A PERIMETER BERM WILL BE PLACED JUST OFFSHORE TO ACT AS A STORM SURGE BLOCKADE. DURING NORMAL WEATHER CONDITIONS THE BERM IS A GATHERING PARK THAT ALSO HOLDS LARGE SCULPTURES. THE ARTISTS AND MAKERS ARE THE HEART OF RED HOOK AND CURRENTLY ARE UNDER-APPRECIATED. TO ENGAGE MORE PEOPLE IN THE ART SCENE SEVERAL ROADS WILL BE CONVERTED INTO A PEDESTRIAN ONLY PROMENADES PARALLELED WITH ART CENTERS, GALLERIES, SHOPS, AND CAFES. THE ARTISTS ARE WORKING IN OLD INDUSTRIAL BUILDINGS. BY CREATING A NEW ZONING OVERLAY THAT ALLOWS THESE BUILDINGS TO BE RE-PURPOSED, THEN CAN BECOME LIVE-WORK SPACES FOR THE COMMUNITY.
