can architecture encourage collaboration? the roundhouse

Wheelhouse Parti Serves as a means to draw locals into the building and redirect them to the different programs.

Functions of the Wheelhouse The lobby is a node in which everyone is drawn to and redirected toward the different programs

Adapting the Parti to the Site

Formalized Parti

The sculptural wind shield engages train patrons and the major bypass with a cultural image.

The Wheelhouse (the lobby) is open to the landscaping afront the railroad

14

The Roundhouse takes on the physique of a railroad roundhouse, functioning as a wheelhouse. Upon entry, visitors find that the lobby is covered, but not enclosed. Having the lobby exposed to the outdoor, tells visitors that they have yet to arrive fully—envoking the aura of a roundhouse and keep the connectivity with the adjacent railroad. This even allows people to walk out into a landscaped area and view the passing trains. Insteadd of defaulting to all orthgonal walls, some of the walls are rounded to accentuate viewing and to subtly allude the idea of a fluid-functioning roundhouse. In the lobby, visitors and patrons are greeted by three solid masses on the first level, presenting three different options by which the program is organized.

As one of few “art-towns” in the city, the Greenmount West community is rich in creativity and suffering. It is commonplace for the artists in the neighborhood display their passions and negritude through mirals and graffiti. Thus, to accommodate that culture, the Roundhouse dedicates several of its walls for mirals. According to the Site Analysis, the building is hard to reach and to access via car. Thus, the design employs graffiti walls, like other buildings in the neighborhood, to attract visitors and users to the site. Additionally, the Wheelhouse Wind Shield is a weather barrier for an open lobby; but it is also a visual aid for train riders to view. This, in good hope, could be an initiative to restore the vibrance of the railroad valley in the Station North.

Visual Connections The lobby glass shield protects against excess wind flow. It frames views across the train yard toward downtown, while the image on the glass shield serves as a viewpoint of interest for train riders.

Lobby Openness The open lobby engenders a sense that the visitors have not yet fully arrived until they enter one of the programmed spaces.

In this style of the module, since the creation of the porch lessened square footage on the first level, that floor is an open plan, free of any interupting walls in the plan.

The apartment complex is organized in the transverse orientation of the module to increase the breadth of the space, overcoming the linear limitations of a typical row home. The circulation module acts as a privacy buffer from the alley.

“Separation” - dividing several different programs and rites within the space

“Illumination” - spreading and directing light to communicate moods and carry emotions

“Iceberg” - having a surprise reveal of the bulk of the building’s experience

32

“Multifaceted” - making space for several experiences of the same program across different levels

rethinking the funerary rites for safety ghusl - washing The body is first washed by the family or next of kin, using minimal amounts of chlorine water.

kafan - shrouding The body is then dried and shrouded with chlorinedried cloth.

salat al-janazh - corporate prayer The family and the community come together and pray as usual. But, they will pray concentrically

dafin - burial With the community at a distance, the family and W.H.O. workers get to decend on different stairwells, into a large bason filled with chlorine—symbolic of a burial for the death of ebola.

iddah - mourning The family and W.H.O. workers reascend upon different stair wells to exit the cenotaph.
