preface Like my friends Gabriele, Paolo and Willy, I too was bewitched by the woods, their lights and atmospheres, irremediably struck by their magic. As the title, really apt, of this book full of emotions and suggestions suggests, one cannot remain indifferent in front of a beautiful forest. The combination of trunks, leaves, humus, shadows and lights awakens an infinity of sensations in the human soul. It is something inherent in our nature, inexplicable, that children know well and adults sometimes pretend to forget. Yes, because you don’t go into a forest, but you enter it. And the difference is all there. You enter this world of silent giants, the smell of mushrooms and molds, as you would do in a cave or in the sea, in silence, with a hint of awe and heartbeat, diving. On the other hand, when you move among the trees that have put their first leaves, perhaps on a rainy day in May, with the fog that enhances the bright green, but blurs the contours and erases the visual references, it seems to be in a giant aquarium. The Japanese are well aware of this, who gave the “bath in the forest” a name: shinrin-yoku, a medical practice based on the great benefits, such as the increase in immune function, experienced by individuals who spend time in nature, especially in places with a high concentration of trees. This immersion also leads to a different communication with the place. No longer spectators, one finally feels part of the scene, somehow entering into a relationship with its elements. And, in the case of the nature photographer, the composition extends in three dimensions, around his gaze. introduzione Boschi per l’uomo, uomini per il bosco. Son pochi che, percorrendo una foresta, si formino una idea esatta dell’influenza della mano dell’uomo sopra la sua vegetazione, e meno poi della importanza dal lato economico, industriale e meteorologico. Pegli uni la foresta non è che un ornamento della natura che rompe la monotonia del paesaggio, formando del verde fogliame un gradevole contrasto colle tinte dorate delle messi e col bianco spiccante delle roccie illuminate dal sole: pegli altri la foresta non è che un ostacolo ai progressi dell’agricoltura, usurpando il posto al frumento e alla vite: per la maggior parte in fine la foresta è un terreno che dà tanto in buona che in triste annata, e senza cura o spesa, i medesimi prodotti. Eppure al contrario la foresta richiede, come ogni altra coltivazione, cure assidue e intelligenti; porge un insieme di prodotti e di vantaggi molteplici che dee interessare non solo il selvano, ma l’agronomo e l’industriale, anzi qualsiasi cittadino; la foresta in fine, per essere bene trattata e amministrata, domanda cognizioni ancor più larghe e scientifiche della stessa agricoltura propriamente detta. Questo brano, che risale ad oltre 130 anni fa, ci fa capire l’evoluzione delle funzioni che i nostri boschi rappresentano per la società e i progressi fatti dalle scienze forestali per attuare una gestione forestale sempre più sostenibile, attenta alle esigenze della natura, ma anche a quelle dell’uomo. istante Cos’è un istante, se non quell’attimo sfuggente che magicamente la macchina fotografica rende eterno? L’istante è una percezione sensoriale, materica ma al contempo spirituale: in un attimo ci rendiamo conto che qualcosa è successo, un qualcosa che ha scatenato in noi un’emozione che vorremmo poter custodire per sempre nella nostra memoria. Nel bosco possiamo vivere questa esperienza, in un luogo intimo dove è facile perdersi per poi ritrovarsi, pervasi da una piacevole sensazione di benessere e di pace. In certi momenti vorresti che quell’istante non finisse mai, ma sai che ciò non è possibile e quindi non ti resta che sperare che la tua memoria ne serbi il ricordo. Le immagini di questo libro hanno fermato per sempre i nostri istanti, che auspichiamo diventino i vostri, quali sprone per una personale ricerca nei magnifici boschi montani del Friuli Venezia Giulia.

light Light and magic, a perfect combination as light is already magic in itself. Light is everything in photography, with light and a camera you can write a story, you can register a moment that from that moment becomes perennial. The light inside a forest takes on a thousand variations, infinite declinations that change continuously during the same day, just turn your gaze, change your point of view.At the beginning of spring the first rays of sun warm the undergrowth that wakes slowly wrapped in its mists, which, lingering, thin out, discovering the bright green of the beech trees. In the hot summers the strong and hard light is softened by the lush foliage of the trees that give peace and coolness. In autumn, the warm and mild light makes the larch trees that color the high-altitude woods with gold even more brilliant, a prelude to winter that will cover everything with its white blanket, waiting for a new awakening in the sunlight.

colori La magia continua, la luce ci permette di vedere il mondo che ci circonda a colori, dipinge ogni cosa con infinite sfumature e varianti. Quando si parla di colori e di boschi, l’immaginario collettivo ci porta all’autunno con le mille tonalità di giallo, rosso e arancio, ma in realtà nel bosco ogni stagione ha i suoi colori. La primavera è il momento delle gemme che cangiano dal marrone chiaro al verde brillante, mentre l’estate è la stagione dei verdi intensi e cupi, utili a proteggere il sottobosco e le sue creature dalla canicola del sole agostano. Passato il tripudio dei colori autunnali arriva il momento del bianco inverno che solo apparentemente è monotono; in realtà la luce bassa sull’orizzonte crea infinite sfumature che trasformano il bianco in un arcobaleno di riflessi, che solo un occhio attento e sensibile riesce a cogliere, magari guardando nel mirino della macchina fotografica.

ephemeral presences A forest from a distance can appear to us as a cathedral of immense and mighty green columns, guarding who knows what secrets and treasures. It is when we enter a forest that we can realize that we have been catapulted into a magical world made not only of trees but also of an infinity of ephemeral and fleeting presences. The tree vault seems to want to hide and protect a parallel world made up of large and small animals and plants. It is a literally magical world that emotionally mixes with that of the Sbilffs, the elves of our woods. Remaining in silence for a few minutes, lying with our back to a large and gnarled trunk, we can realize how the forest comes to life and we find ourselves in a moment surrounded by its mysterious and elusive inhabitants, whose presence can sometimes only be guessed behind a shadow, a hiss, a breath, a reflection of light, a small noise of trampled leaves, of branches that move for no apparent reason: we have entered the magical world of the forest, and we could continue to enjoy these emotions only if we remain there with respect and look at it with the curiosity of a child.

acqua L’acqua è fonte di vita… è l’elemento presente in ogni cosa del nostro quotidiano, è il motore della rigenerazione naturale con le sue continue trasformazioni. Assistere al suo mutamento dalla forma solida alla forma liquida in una frazione di secondo, cos’è se non una magia? I boschi sono tra i primi ambienti in cui il ciclo della vita si compie grazie all’elemento acqua, che dona linfa alle piante, che protegge le gemme dalle improvvise gelate primaverili con un sottile scudo di ghiaccio, che rinfresca il sottobosco con le sue nebbioline fatate, che garantisce il riposo dell’intero ecosistema stendendo la sua soffice coperta bianca di neve. La magia si rileva mostrandoci l’acqua nelle sue svariate forme, ognuna con una sua funzione non solo estetica nel mondo dei boschi. In una manciata di attimi l’acqua prima scende sotto forma di pioggia per poi, magari a causa di un repentino abbassamento della temperatura, trasformarsi in pungente ghiaccio e poi nella candida e carezzevole neve. Non doma madre natura continua nella sua magia chiedendo all’acqua di trasformarsi nuovamente, ed allora dalla volta arborea vediamo levarsi nuvole bianche che la fanno salire in cielo da dove, a breve, riscenderà sulla terra sotto forma di pioggia. L’acqua è anche fonte di poesia. Per capirlo basta trovarsi all’interno di un bosco durante un temporale e fermarsi ad ascoltare il ritmico battere delle gocce sulle foglie degli alberi che, a seconda della loro grandezza e forma, rilasciano un suono ed una melodia diverse, oppure durante una nevicata quando non vi sono le foglie a trattenere i candidi fiocchi che cadono al suolo in un silenzio da fiaba... anche questa è magia.
