THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT JOSELYN

Beauty

prayerful, I pray about anything and everything. Before I go into anything I always put God first because I feel he has given me the raw talent I have. I just ask him to nurture it and make it grow. That’s always my prayer that whatever I do his favour will always be upon me. God has done so much and taken me places I could never have imagined. I came from nothing, and he’s made my dreams a reality, it’s all been by the grace of God. I just always give God the glory, I think it’s his glory and favour that keeps me beautiful. YOU MUST HAVE A LOT OF GUYS CHASING YOU? HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR BUSY SCHEDULE AND DO YOU HAVE TIME FOR A RELATIONSHIP? [Laughs] I don’t let myself get carried away with male attention, that ‘oh you have a nice body’ or ‘you have a pretty face’ I don’t let it get to my head. I love my fans and I know the majority of them are male so I honestly really appreciate them. In terms of balancing my schedule and a relationship, I just make sure I stay focused and make God proud, keep my family proud. NOT ONLY ARE YOU AN ACTRESS BUT YOU ARE ALSO A TV PRESENTER AND MODEL, LAST YEAR YOU WERE ANNOUNCED AS THE FACE OF RANGE ROVER EVOQUE AND ALSO SELECTED TO REPRESENT AFRICAN FEMALE TV PERSONALITIES IN THE DIAMONDS OF AFRICA VIRGIN ATLANTIC CAMPAIGN. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS? I think that these are just the tip of the iceberg. I try to stay grounded, being the face of Range Rover Evoqe was an amazing achievement for me. I’ve only being doing this for under 5 years and some people think I haven’t paid my dues but I always say once you have the favour of God on you it doesn’t matter where you came from, all that matters is where you are going and where God is taking you. Sometimes I feel like I don’t even deserve half of the things that come to me but who am I to second guess God. I always tell God that I’m thankful. I also have an amazing mother who always reminds me not to get carried away. I am very grateful, but I know that this is only the beginning. The promises of God for me I don’t think we have even touched them yet. I feel very blessed but I can tell you one thing, the best is yet to come.

JOSELYN DUMAS, GHANA’S FINE LADY

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO GET INTO THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY?

WRITTEN BY ADEOLA IDOWU

ACTRESS AND TELEVISION PRESENTER JOSELYN DUMAS IS BEST KNOWN FOR BEING THE HOST OF GHANA’S MOST WATCHED TALK SHOW THE ONE SHOW, HER ACTING ROLES IN HIT FILMS SUCH AS PERFECT PICTURE, A STING IN A TALE AND NOT FORGETTING HER LEADING ROLE IN THE SENSATIONAL MOVIE SERIES ADAMS APPLES. Joselyn is undeniably enjoying a thriving career in the flourishing African entertainment with multiple awards and nominations including 2010/2011 ‘TV Personality of the Year’, 2012 ‘Face of Range Rover Evoque’ in Ghana, ‘Best Actress in a Leading Role’ at the 2011 Ghana Movie Academy Awards and her most recent special honours from popular Nigerian entertainment and lifestyle publication, City People in Lagos. In Ghana she has also caused quite a stir by being dubbed the country’s most beautiful celebrity. We caught up with the 6

HandB SUPPLIMENT.indd 6-7

gorgeous star during her recent trip to London to talk about beauty, career and her sources of inspiration. YOU HAVE BEEN DESCRIBED AS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL FEMALE CELEBRITY IN GHANA, WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS? [Gasps] Really? I didn’t know that! Trust me there are a lot of beautiful and talented people in Ghana, being named as the most beautiful celebrity in Ghana, wow! I thank God for that but it does put a lot of pressure on me. Nobody wants to be a has been, you want to be on top of your game all the time. I just know I don’t want to disappoint my fans. Although I am truly grateful to all my fans, I am so thankful for them. DO YOU HAVE ANY BEAUTY SECRETS? I drink a lot of water! I work out a lot and try to eat healthy and I place emphasis on ‘try’. I also pray a lot. I believe in the importance of staying

“I DON’T LET MYSELF GET CARRIED AWAY WITH MALE ATTENTION, THAT ‘OH YOU HAVE A NICE BODY’ OR ‘YOU HAVE A PRETTY FACE’ I DON’T LET IT GET TO MY HEAD.”

NOBODY WANTS TO BE A HAS BEEN, YOU WANT TO BE ON TOP OF YOUR GAME ALL THE TIME.

I’ve always liked acting. As a child I regularly copied the way actors and TV presenters spoke and I would even pretend my family members were my audience. There is like a new world order taking place in Africa right now. A lot is moving up within the entertainment industry, we now have a new breed of very talented entertainers, actors, actresses and musicians. This really motivated me to follow my dreams and be a part of the revolution. There are a new crop of TV presenters, movie directors, producers popping up every day. They are very gifted people, I felt I had to be a part of this movement. I am proud that I can also say that I was in an era when things turned around for the best for African entertainment. Africa is taking over and I am really thankful for the raw talent he has given me and the opportunity to be able to take part in some history. WHICH OTHER ACTRESSES HAVE INSPIRED YOU, OR GROWING UP WHO HAVE YOU LOOKED UP TO? I must say in terms of other African actresses Genevieve Nnaji and Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde. Genevieve has built a brand that is almost untouchable in Africa and the same with Omotola; her brand is strong. I also admire Angela Bassett, I loved the role she played in How Stella Got her Groove Back, she was truly an inspiration. I also respect talk show hosts such as Oprah Winfrey, Tyra Banks, Wendy Williams and Ellen DeGeneres. These are the people I would say I look to for inspiration in my craft.

“TO LIVE THE SHADOW OF SOMEONE ELSE’S LIFE PREVENTS YOU KNOWING YOUR OWN” Dr Yana Johnson MBE

There is definitely a high demand all over the world for premium makeup brand products that work on black skin. The Yana Cosmetics line consists of a range of products such as a choice of 13 foundation shades, 3 oil controlling powders in medium to dark tones, a choice of blushers, shimmers, eye makeup, lip glosses and Lip Pencils.

RICH, SMOOTH AND POLISHED

“A Yana Foundation is a rich pigmented foundation creamy base which conceals all in one. It is a foundation that can be worn straight on the skin without a base or primer or Concealer, yet conceals and finishes all in one. The foundation will conceal dark marks in just two applications (when set with a powder); and because it is very rich you only need a pea sized amount for a full coverage that will last all day. You don’t need to be a professional to get professional results with the Yana foundation.”

“ I WAS BORN TO INSPIRE, INFLUENCE AND IMPACT THOSE WHOM I MEET.” Dr Yana Johnson MBE believes that her purpose is to be a positive influence and inspiration to others. Since the launch of the line Dr Yana has amassed a collection of 7 business awards for excellence and entrepreneurship. available on the market for women of colour. “I was unable to find the right products to suit me so I decided to be the solution to my problem.” She explains to Rejoice USA. “I started with a small range, I had an understanding of the shades, Tones and how they look, so I designed the entire range including the colours and tested what worked best in the market place and for my clients.” Humble beginnings meant that Dr Yana started off small, with sampling on close friends and family to home-based selling and eventually online, expansion on the brand came about as demand for Yana Cosmetics grew.

Dr Yana Johnson MBE is well known for her motivational public speaking and talks about her incredible journey, diverse entrepreneurial resilience and determination to connect with an audience at every level such as young people, creatives, entrepreneurs and seasoned business people. She regularly encourages listeners to realise their true potential, be inspired and motivated. As quoted on her site Dr Yana explains; “If you have a dream follow it. My dream was a vision and a destiny at times knowing it was almost bigger than me, I believe in never giving up.”

AFRO HAIR & BEAUTY LIVE

Hair and Beauty

EUROPE’S BIGGEST ANNUAL AFRO HAIR & BEAUTY EXHIBITION WRITTEN BY ADEOLA IDOWU

It takes team work and a lot of planning to organise the event we have a strong and supportive team of passionate professionals to help create the show and make it an annual success.

It’s hard work, but we make it happen in a highly creative environment where there is a great deal of passion for hair and beauty. Our avant garde competitions are legendary and seeing hairdressers push the creative button further and further each year is another aspect of Afro Hair and Beauty Live that I love.

HOW DID AFRO HAIR & BEAUTY LIVE BEGIN? Afro Hair & Beauty Live was initially founded by Dyke and Dryden a Jamaican partnership. They were the first importer of Black Hair care products in the early 80s. It started out as a vehicle to display and showcase all the new products for black hair emerging in the market especially the Geri Curl; popular during that time. WHERE AND WHEN WAS THE FIRST EVER SHOW HELD? The first Show was held in 1981 at Grosvenor House Hotel on Park Lane, London. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE YEAR SO FAR? Destiny child performed at Alexandra Palace, our previous venue in North London before they became mega Superstars in 1999.

LASTS YEAR’S AFRO HAIR & BEAUTY LIVE PLAYED HOST TO THOUSDANDS OF PEOPLE FROM ACCROSS LONDON AND NEIGBOURING CITIES. EVERY YEAR CROWDS ENJOY THE FUN AND INTERACTIVE STAGE SHOWS, GUEST PERFORMANCES, PRIZE COMPETITIONS AND MAKEOVER OPPORTUNITIES.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT ORGANISING THE SHOW AND HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR EXPERIENCE?

Organisers Verna McKenzie and Grace Kelly play a pivotal role in making sure each year Afro Hair and Beauty Live is the place to be. They and a dedicated team ensure the best wholesalers, ethnic beauty retailers, salon professionals, beauty professionals, nail professionals, Black print and TV media are present at the event. Every year visitors return for the electrifying stage shows and fun competitions, makeover opportunities, and the chance to buy products. We caught up with Grace Kelly of Afro Hair & Beauty Live to talk about her experience as an organiser of the annual event.

GRACE

The highlight for me has been the rise of Natural Hair and new products that have been developed in the last five years, as I have been natural for over 15 years I am pleased to see the breath of new products that are now available to help all hair types. ORGANISING THE UK’S BIGGEST ANNUAL AFRO HAIR & BEAUTY EXHIBITION SHOW MUST BE A HEAVY TASK. WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO ORGANISE THIS EVENT EVERY YEAR?

AFRO HAIR & BEAUTY LIVE IS UNDOUBTEDLY EUROPE’S BIGGEST HAIR, BEAUTY AND LIFESTYLE EXHIBITION SHOW FOR BLACK WOMEN. HAVING STARTED LIFE AS A TRADE SHOW, THE ANNUAL EVENT CONSISTENTLY ATTRACTS TRADE VISITORS FROM ALL OVER THE UK AND ABROAD. NOW IN ITS 32ND YEAR, AFRO HAIR & BEAUTY LIVE CONTINUES TO PROVIDE THOUSANDS WITH THE LATEST PRODUCTS, BRANDS AND SERVICES PERFECT FOR ALL AFRICAN AND CARIBBEAN HAIR CARE AND BEAUTY NEEDS. EVERY YEAR FOR 2 DAYS ONLY AFRO HAIR & BEAUTY LIVE SUCCESSFULLY EXHIBITS A WIDE RANGE OF HAIR AND BEAUTY PRODUCTS, ALSO INCLUSIVE OF FASHION ACCESSORIES, NAIL PRODUCTS AND BEAUTY THERAPY SERVICES TO WOMEN AND EVEN MEN OF COLOUR ALL PREPARED TO INVEST IN LOOKING THEIR BEST.

VERNA

NOW IN ITS 32ND YEAR WHAT HAVE BEEN THE BEST HIGHLIGHTS FOR YOU BOTH?

YOU HAVE EXHIBITORS AND BRANDS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD TAKE PART EACH YEAR - HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE SUCCESS AND GROWTH OF AFRO HAIR & BEAUTY? The success of the Afro Hair & Beauty Live is in the hands of the manufacturers who produce new products each year and put them on the market. Many of the retail stores have so many products and they are unaware of how each product performs. So we are in a position to display and educate the consumers and professionals on new products as they are being placed in the marketplace. So it’s great you can try before you buy. WHAT ARE YOUR VISIONS AND HOPES FOR FUTURE YEARS TO COME? We hope that manufactures will continue to supply the need for the consumer. We see a trend toward natural and organic products in skin and hair care. We see hair manufacturers producing more synthetic hair that is versatile to needs of the consumer; these are all good as we know we as women like to have as many style options as possible.

BLACK WOMEN SPEND FOUR TIMES AS MUCH AS THEIR WHITE COUNTERPARTS ON HAIR, BEAUTY AND BRANDED GOODS.

10 WAYS TO MAINTAIN YOUR BEAUTY

WRITTEN BY JULIET ONYEKA OSODI

1. REDUCE OIL BUILD UP! Reduce oil build up on skin by applying organic oils. Yes it sounds crazy but applying nourishing organic oils like pure Vitamin E oil or Moroccan Argan oil at night helps to re-balance the skin whilst fading away darks spots and giving you a smoother complexion.

MAKEUP ARTIST TO THE STARS SOME OF MY HIGH PROFILE CELEBRITY CLIENT LIST (PROOF THAT HARD WORK PAYS OFF)

2. TOTAL PIMPLE ELIMINATION! To prevent or reduce spots, massage an ice cube over your face each night until it melts. This helps to keep your skin taught and also reduces any existing swelling. 3. ERADICATE DRYNESS WITH LIP EXFOLIATION! Tackle dry, chapped and flaky lips by applying a mix of brown sugar, coconut oil and honey then scrubbing with an old toothbrush or clean mascara wand. The brown sugar will remove dead skin, while the coconut oil and honey will help to restore the lost moisture. Finish by using a tissue to wipe away excess flakes and then enjoy your beautiful kissable pout. 4. FIND YOUR PERFECT MATCH! The best way to pick the correct foundation colour for you is to match your foundation to your collarbone rather than your face. This will provide consistent colour on your body, face and neck given you a more flawless finished look. 5. BE GOOD TO YOUR LASHES! JULIET ‘ONYEKA’ OSODI IS A CELEBRITY MAKEUP AND HAIR ARTIST WHO STRADDLES HER TIME BETWEEN HIGH PROFILE PHOTO SHOOTS, TEACHING EAGER MAKEUP STUDENTS AND JUGGLING MOTHERHOOD. HER CAREER STARTED AS A MAKEUP CONSULTANT FOR ORGANIC SKINCARE GIANT ELYSAMBRE AND HAS SINCE BLOSSOMED INTO WORKING WITH SOME OF THE BIGGEST NAMES IN MUSIC, ENTERTAINMENT AND THE FASHION INDUSTRY.

Regardless of your skin type, age or whether you have time or not looking after your skin and how you apply makeup is important! If you ever wonder how you can combat dry lips, spots, oil build up or even achieve natural looking eyebrows, flawless coverage, popping lips and

CLEAN YOUR MAKEUP BRUSHES REGULARLY, AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK IF YOU’RE FREQUENT MAKEUP WEARER, SIMPLY WASH THEM IN SOAPY WATER.

False lashes look amazing on but can be a pain to remove. To avoid losing all your lashes in the process, apply warm baby oil to a cotton wool pad, place over the lash-line and allow it to soak for about 30 seonds and remove the pad. Your false lashes should now slide off easier without causing any damage to your lashes. 6. GET NATURAL LOOKING EYE BROWS! To get the most natural looking brows, always opt for a lighter shade powder or eyeliner pencil i.e. brown instead of black and fill in the brows rather than draw a harsh line. 7. FREEZING EYE LINER…

Celebrity clients include Nollywood actress (clockwise) Genevieve Nnaji, US Actor Tim Reid, Rapper Fazer of N-Dubz, Actor Ashley Walters, Finacial Expert Alvin Hall, Footballer and Robbie Savage to name a few. Her work has also been featured in numerous commercials for ITV as well as popular shows at OH TV including Real Talk, Womenz World, Culture Vultures, Telling Tales & The Show.

A good trick to preserve your eyeliner and keep it from constantly crumbling, is to put it in the freezer 15 minutes prior to application. It should glide along your lash line seamlessly giving you the perfect shape every time. 8. ATTAIN THE FLAWLESS LOOK! To get a flawless finished look, especially when creating dark smoky eyes, apply your eye makeup first (eye primer, eye shadows, eyeliner, mascara etc) and clean away any smudges using a cleansing wipe. Your face will now have a flawless base for you to apply your foundation and concealer. 9. POPPING LIPS! For long-lasting lip colour, use your lip liner to outline your lip and then fill in your entire lip with the pencil. Then dust some translucent powder over the lips to set the lip colour in place and apply lip gloss on the top to finish.

TRADITIONAL WEST-AFRICAN WEDDING MAKEUP. MODELLED BY JANITA FRANCIS.

10. CLEAN UP YOUR ACT! lashes you have found the right article. Here Juliet ‘Onyeka’ Osodi, celebrity makeup and hair stylist brings her wealth of experience and sheds light on 10 of her best beauty tips to keep you looking fresh and flawless.

Clean your makeup brushes regularly, at least once a week if you’re frequent makeup wearer. Simply wash them in soapy water, squeeze out any excess water and leave to air dry on a towel overnight. This will prevent bacteria build up leading to conditions such as impetigo, herpes and ringworm.

ADUNNI HARUNA

I’M PROUD OF MY HAIR AND NATURAL BEAUTY

WHICH BEAUTY PRODUCTS DO YOU SWEAR BY?

Hair

I tend to wear very little makeup; I like to keep it natural. However when I do use it I love to use Fashion Fair makeup, Max Factor mascara and Sleek eye shadow. WHICH BEAUTY ITEMS CAN YOU NOT LEAVE YOUR HOUSE WITHOUT?

WRITTEN BY ADEOLA IDOWU, ADUNNI HARUNA

I make sure my model bag is with me in the boot of my car wherever I go; this contains my lip gloss, Mac Mascara, plain vest top, leggings and a pair of heels! HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN YOUR NATURAL HAIR?

‘I TRULY BELIEVE WHAT YOU PUT ON THE INSIDE IS REFLECTIVE ON THE OUTSIDE.’

I use Lusters Pink Hair Oil, and I love Kera Care products. I’ve used Lusters Pink Oil ever since I was a child. I keep natural hair which I’m really proud of; I love to model and promote natural hair as I strongly believe in natural simple beauty. I love to use Kera Care products, it was recommended to me by my hair stylist. It has gradually texturised my afro by softening the curl pattern. I dyed my hair for the first time 2 years ago. It scared me at first, I thought it was a big change but I then realised that it was a good choice. I like the added colour. HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO KEEP A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE IN ORDER TO LOOK YOUR BEST? I try my best to go swimming once a week. This is so good for the body and skin. I also use face masks and drink lots of water. A while ago I took up capoeira classes, I thoroughly enjoyed them but I took a break for a short while due to my busy schedule but I will get back to those classes soon! Another aspect of my life that I believe has really helped towards my outer appearance is how I look after the inside. I do not swear, smoke or drink alcohol, I truly believe what you put on the inside is reflective on the outside. WHAT WOULD YOUR ADVICE BE TO OTHER YOUNG FEMALES AND MALES THAT WANT TO GET INTO THE FASHION AND MODELLING INDUSTRY? Be honest and sincere, I would say ask yourself these questions; are you professional? Are you patient and courteous? Are you prepared to sometimes wait long hours or at times wear uncomfortable garments and still make them look good? These are realities you can face. My advice would be for girls and guys to be honest and ready to work hard, harder than you thought.

ADUNNI’S TIPS FOR KEEPING CLEAN AND HEALTHY HAIR 1. Regardless of your hair type wash it as regularly as you can. Find out what works best for you. 2. Invest in a good leave-in moisturiser 3. Use the right products for your scalp and find out what suits you. Looking after your scalp reflects in the way your hair grows. 4. If it is natural keep in plaits or twist, this strengthens the hair. 5. Hair treatments once a month are good for hair and scalp. 6. Trim your ends regularly, I recommend getting this done professionally. 7. If your hair is breaking, let it rebuild itself, keep the area moisturised with a natural oil or healthy moisturiser. 8. Weather really affects the hair in winter so wear caps and hats for protection more often. 9. In the summer use more leave-in moisturiser so it doesn’t dry out. 10. If you have braids, weaves or extensions frequently invest in a detangler for use when removing the extensions, this helps to prevent damage.

‘I LOVE TO MODEL AND PROMOTE NATURAL HAIR AS I STRONGLY BELIEVE IN NATURAL SIMPLE BEAUTY.’ 14

THINKING NATURALLY!

Hair

10 THINGS TO CONSIDER IF YOU WANT TO GO NATURAL WRITTEN BY VALLEY FONTAINE

VALLEY FONTAINE, BBC BROADCAST JOURNALIST AND HAIR BLOGGER, IMPARTS HER KNOWLEDGE OF THE 10 MOST IMPORTANT POINTS TO CONSIDER IF YOU ARE OPTING TO GO DOWN THE NATURAL HAIR ROUTE.

‘WHY DOES MY HAIR ALWAYS STAY THE SAME LENGTH?’ The ends of your hair break off at the same rate as your hair grows, amazing isn’t it? You may have seen the recent spate of videos of black women growing their hair to lengths that they have never experienced before. They are using the Protective Styling method (see No.7), beating their hairs breaking cycle. However your hair will not grow beyond what your genes determines. 3. THE BIG CHOP The Big Chop is the term used to describe women who cut off all of their relaxer, leaving them with maybe half an inch of natural hair; a TWA (Teeny Weeny Afro) or more. Then you have women like me who decided not to Big Chop at all. I maintained my length, by very slowly trimming my relaxer (still in progress) so much so that I have gone from relaxed to natural without ever having lost my shoulder length hair. Both methods can create a list of handling and styling challenges. 4. STYLING YOUR HAIR Trying to style your hair to look the way it did when your hair was relaxed will become an increasingly frustrating challenge if you don’t go with the ‘fro. Hair that once lay flat will start to bunch up! So it’s time to give it up and get creative. 5. HUMIDITY Heat and humidity will change your hairstyle. So if you left your home with your hair out/free style, after just a few hours your hair style is likely to take on a life of its own; a shorter thicker shrunken version of itself. However humidity will have little or no impact on styles like buns, plaits, canerows, flat twist, pinned up or tucked in styles.

7. PROTECTIVE STYLING This is where you try to retain any length you grow by means of protecting the ends of your hair, so they don’t naturally break off. A protective style can be anything from wearing well-moisturised hair in a bun to wearing a wig. If done effectively protective styling can help you to beat your hairs natural breaking cycle, gaining extra length by retaining those once lost ends. 8. ONLINE HAIR GURUS Be careful who you take advice from. Although most hair gurus online are hard working, honest and generous with their knowledge, the pitfalls include inexperienced people who unintentionally promote potentially hair damaging advice. 9. PRODUCTS There is no one size fits all product, because one person uses a product which produces a certain curl, frizz or softness does not necessarily mean it will work the same for you. What you rub on your hair may make it more manageable and add moisture thus help lessen breakage, but hair moisturisers, shampoos, conditioners and oils will not permanently change your hair structure or in themselves grow your hair. It is best to find out what works best for you. 10. WIGS WEAVES AND EXTENSIONS If not done sympathetically theses styles can ruin your natural hair. Tight and heavy hairstyles can damage your scalp leading to balding and receding hairlines. Also an inability fully moisturise your hair can lead to dryness and breakage.

6. TIME If you have any thing more than a TWA, gone will be the days of a quick comb, shake and go. You will have to make time to structure your hair, which may involve detangling it and setting it in plaits or twists the night before.

VALLEY FONTAINE, BBC BROADCAST JOURNALIST AND HAIR BLOGGER, REVEALS HER KNOWLEDGE OF THE 10 MOST IMPORTANT POINTS TO CONSIDER IF YOU ARE OPTING TO GO DOWN THE NATURAL HAIR ROUTE. THERE IS A NATURAL HAIR REVOLUTION IN PROGRESS. BLACK WOMEN AROUND THE WORLD IN INCREASING NUMBERS ARE SAYING NO TO THE CREAMY CRACK OTHERWISE KNOWN AS HAIR RELAXER, AND OPTING TO WEAR THEIR HAIR IN IT’S NATURAL TEXTURE INSTEAD. After an adulthood of chemicals I decided to go natural 3 and half years ago, and my hair today is not as I understood it. It has been a journey of surprises, challenges and rediscovery. If you’ve been thinking about going natural or should I say returning to your natural roots, I have compiled 10 realistic considerations that will help you on your way.

1. GREAT TEXTURE EXPECTATIONS If you are anything like me, you’ve been looking at the YouTube videos and marveling at the beautiful array of textures that make up natural Afro type hair. Maybe you’ve even been thinking to yourself, “Wow I want my hair to look like that, so I’m going natural!” The reality is your hair is no more likely to look like ‘hers’ than it is to look like your best friends. We all have different hair patterns made up of a range of variables, which could be a head of coils, frizz, kinks or curly hair or even a combination of all those different textures.

ABOUT VALLEY.... VALLEY FONTAINE IS A HAIR JOURNALIST AND ALSO A BBC BROADCAST JOURNALIST. ON HER BLOG WWW.VALLEYFONTAINE. VALLEY WHO IS A REGULAR WIG WEARER IS 3 AND A HALF YEARS NATURAL WITHOUT THE BIG CHOP.

2. LONG LENGTH EXPECTATIONS ‘BLACK HAIR DOES NOT GROW!’ Oh yes it does, but to what length is more to do with your genes than any product you can buy in a shop. (L-R) 1. VALLEY FONTAINE’S BLOG | 2. GET THE BEST OUT OF YOUR MAKEUP

Beauty WRITTEN BY FUNMI ODEGBAMI

1. BUY THE RIGHT TOOLS

9. A LITTLE BIT OF COLOUR GOES A LONG WAY

When you buy your makeup kit make sure to choose something that is known for its quality. This way you can be assured that you will be able to achieve the kind of effect that you are looking for. Just by improving the quality of your brushes and using richer pigmented products, the application would immediately be better.

Apply some blusher to the cheeks and a bright lip gloss to the lips to create an instant sexy vibe. Use two shades of blush, apply your natural colour and then add a pop of colour on top. This layering technique offers a natural brightness.

2. PREP YOUR SKIN Cleanse and moisturise using the right products for your skin type before any makeup application. 3. CONCEAL

10. TRY A MAKEUP CLASS WITH FRIENDS Consider taking a fun makeup class with your girlfriends. Nothing beats practical hands on instruction with a professional makeup artist, it’s quite the experience, you gain so much knowledge. For more information visit www.ohtv.co.uk and www.thisismink.com.

Invest in a cream concealer that is one or two shades lighter than your foundation. Use this to cover any blemishes and to highlight and accentuate a feature or facial plane e.g. brow bone, bridge of the nose, centre of the chin. 4. CHOOSE THE RIGHT FOUNDATION Step 1 Pick three shades to try: one that looks about right, a lighter colour and a slightly darker colour. Step 2 Swipe each colour on the jaw line. Step 3 The shade that disappears or perfectly matches the skin is the correct choice of foundation. 5. SET WITH POWDER Many people miss this step, however setting your foundation with powder will help it to last longer and warms up the complexion.

6. GROOM YOUR BROWS All brows can do with a little grooming. My advice would be to get your brows shaped at a professional salon, however even shaped brows would benefit from a little makeup. Fill any sparse hairs with either an eyebrow pencil and/or powder. A good set of brows will draw attention to the eyes. 7. APPLY EYE-LINER CORRECTLY During my makeup lessons the number one question that students ask is how to use eye liner properly. For most, eyeliner applications is often a hit or miss; this is because we try to draw a line all the way across the lash line in one motion. Have you ever tried to draw a straight line without a ruler? Then you will know that this is not the best approach. You’ll get bumps in your line with your brush catching on loose skin. Instead, you’re supposed to go from the inner corner to the centre of your lid, then reload the brush and start from the outside corner until you meet the existing liner.

APPLYING MAKEUP ISN’T AS DAUNTING AS IT SEEMS. ALL IT REQUIRES IS A LITTLE UNDERSTANDING AND A LOT OF PATIENCE. SALES ASSISTANTS ARE ALSO NOT THE BEST PEOPLE TO ASK AS THEY HAVE SALES TARGETS TO MEET AND THEIR PRIORITY IS TO SELL YOU PRODUCTS. SO I AM GOING TO SHARE SOME OF MY TRIED-AND-TRUE TIPS TO HELP YOU PERFECT YOUR MAKEUP APPLICATION. MiNK IS AN AWARDING WINNING MAKEUP AGENCY, FOUNDED IN 2005 BY SUCCESSFUL MAKEUP ARTIST FUNMI ODEGBAMI. HAVING WORKED AND TRAINED WITH SOME OF THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS NAMES IN THE WORLD OF MAKEUP AND BEAUTY, FUNMI HAS ESTABLISHED HERSELF AS A MAJOR PLAYER IN THE FIELD. HER PORTFOLIO INCLUDES WORK ON THE CATWALK, EDITORIAL, TV, MUSIC VIDEOS, EVENTS, CELEBRITIES AND MORE. Funmi identified a gap in the area of makeup training and found that schools and makeup courses in the UK failed to adequately address the unique makeup requirements for people of colour; MiNK London was setup to bridge the gap 18

8. ENHANCE YOUR EYE LASHES Lashes open up and emphasise the eyes so invest in a good quality black mascara and perhaps false eyelashes. Mascara helps to lengthen and thicken your lashes, while false eyelashes are used to create a more dramatic looking eye.

Funmi and other MiNK makeup artists regularly handle the makeup for many guests and presenters on numerous OH TV programmes and productions.

Apply the mascara over the top of the upper lashes from the roots to the tips. When this is dry, add a second layer, this time upwards and outwards from under the upper lashes. This will help to lift the lashes. FUNMI ODEGBAMI, DIRECTOR OF MINK LONDON MAKEUP SCHOOL AND AGENCY GIVES EXPERT ADVICE ON THE BEST WAY TO USE YOUR MAKEUP EFFECTIVELY.

FALSE EYE LASH DOs AND DONTS When working with false eye lashes DO NOT USE NORMAL HAIR GLUE! Apply the eye lash glue to the base of the hair. Leave the glue to get sticky; this usually occurs after approximately 15-20 seconds. Then place the false lash on your own lash line. I find that it is easiest to stick one side down first.
