Home Improvement Projects You Should Never DIY by Daniel Lambraia

INTRODUCTION

Home renovations can personalize your house, and make it a safer and healthier place to live. Home improvement shows on HGTV and posts on Pinterest are trending toward DIY (do it yourself) renovations. Many people have success in DIY endeavors, but we’ve all seen a few comical — yet cringeworthy — DIY fails. The truth is, certain projects are dangerous and require the help of a professional contractor. Here are some projects you should never attempt on your own.

ROOFING Even if you’re handy with tools, the smallest roof repairs should still be handled by a professional. Any mistakes could compound the initial problem, making it more costly in the long run. It’s also worth mentioning that your safety should be a factor in any DIY project. One misstep during a roofing project could be catastrophic.

DEMOLITION Demolition is another potentially dangerous project. If you lack knowledge of your home’s structure, you could accidentally destroy a vital support structure. You might even run into unexpected electric wires. Construction experts know how to safely and efficiently demo a house. To ensure you don’t damage important items or injure yourself, you should consult an expert regarding any demolition projects.

Projects Requiring Permits Many major projects require prior approval from your local government. Your area may have restrictions and requirements that you’d need to familiarize yourself with. Even fence installation could require approval. Local contractors are already familiar with necessary regulations and can secure the proper permits. This will save you the headache and prevent unexpected legal issues.

WATERPROOFING If your home is at risk for water damage, you might think waterproofing your basement is a quick, easy job to do on the weekend. In reality, the project takes more time and effort than you might think. To save yourself from an open hole absorbing moisture and causing more damage, call a local contractor. Digging, applying waterproofing material, then backfilling is tedious, and potentially dangerous. Hiring an expert is the best option.

In addition to the projects above, you should also consult an expert for any projects you aren’t confidently capable of completing. Best of luck in your other DIY projects.
