Atria Finland and its company for meat procurement, A-Farmers is working closely with beef breeders and is organizing breeding bull testing at the farm of Mikko Peura. Every autumn the pens are filled with 200 weaned bull calves of five breeds: Angus, Charolais, Hereford, Limousin and Simmental. Every May the best bulls are sold for breeding or semen production and transported all over the country.

All bulls at Mikko Peura test station are eating minimum 60% grass silage and maximum 40% oats/barley. No protein supplements have been used, only mineral-vitamin mix added. This is a typical diet in Finnish beef production and it is important to measure residual feed intake using same kind of a diet.

In Finland Angus, Hereford, Charolais, Limousin and Simmental animals got their first genomic breeding values this year 2023 and all bulls at Mikko Peura breeding bull station have been genotyped.

Dear Fellow Breeders,

I would like and take up the opportunity to introduce you to the “Goldridge Beefmaster” breeding farm operation. This operation is situated in a more dry and harsh area of South Africa (our outback) called the “Kalahari”. This land was bought on auction in the fall of 2018 whereafter preparations started to convert this farm into a well fullscale operational cattle farm. The aim is breeding highly efficient cattle with low RFI values and above ADG (Average Daily Gain) whilst still keeping all the reproductive traits of the animals in adopting the harsh climate and survival circumstances.

In planning this operation, the decision was then made to use the Beefmaster breed, which is most favourable to our area conditions and climate. For grazing purposes we cultivate only the high potential land where the cultivation of cover crops are done, while the rest of the grazing land consist of Cenchrus ciliaris grass. All grazing is then utilised by way of high stock density grazing where we strive on a one to one carrying capacity. After weaning the offspring get tested in a Vytelle SENSE System thereafter final selections are done according to Favourable RFI - Above Average Daily Gain (ADG).

According to the Goldridge Beefmaster standard, only the top 10% male and female animals will be kept in the herd for our breeding program while the rest will be fed and culled. Progeny of only well selected animals will in future be offered to fellow breeders.

QAZAQ AQBAS ASSOCIATION

The Qazaq Aqbas Association was established in 2012, after the reformation of livestock law in Kazakhstan. The main activity of The Qazaq Aqbas Breed Association is representing members interests, marketing, presenting in cattle shows along with organizing seminars and training.

The Qazaq Aqbas cattle breed was developed in Kazakhstan during the period of 1930 -1950. The breed originates from Hereford bulls imported from the UK and Uruguay crossed with the local aboriginal Kazakh and Kalmyk cattle. The breed resembles the Hereford in color and power balanced with the ability to thrive in low management, harsh weather Kazakhstan conditions.

Together with 7 progressive breeders we have invested in and installed 7 Vytelle Feed Efficiency sites to measure and genetically select for feed efficiency. Our objectives are to differentiate and market the breed globally for its ability to provide a sustainable, economically viable, high-quality, great tasting product that brings profit to our farmers for generations to come.

Today, the association has a membership of over 600 members and more that 10,000 breeders. The total quantity of breeding stock has grown from 75,000 in 2010 to over 485,000 in 2022.

Centre (LABEC) is located in the KwaZulu Natal Province, near the town MooiRiver in South Africa. LABEC is owned and operated by Livestock Alliance (Pty) Ltd and was established in March 2020. LABEC is commercially operated and aims to establish close collaboration with the various role players in the beef value chain i.e., Breed Societies, Seedstock Producers (Stud Breeders), Commercial Beef Farmers and Nutritional Institutions, to make improvements in the beef value chain. Oggendstond Simmentaler Stud was established in the year 2015. Our farm, Misty Heights on which the Simmentalers’ roam is situated 1650 to 1720 meters above sea level, in the Giants Castle region, near the town MooiRiver in the KwaZulu Natal province of South Africa. This mountainous region at the foothills of the Drakensberg Mountains, is a predominantly sour veld area with harsh cold and windy winters with lush summer natural pastures. We have worked hard to ensure our cattle are at the top of the Angus breed for balanced production, maternal efficiency and elite carcase traits. West Virginia University’s Reymann Memorial Farms is home to the Wardensville Bull Test, a progressive performance evaluation program developing and evaluating over 200 spring born bulls annually for some of the Mid-Atlantic regions most progressive Seedstock breeders. Additional performance testing of 150 fall born bulls and 40 fall born heifers is conducted throughout the summer. The goals of these performance testing programs are to allow consignors and buyers to form relationships that share common targets and build marketing and production goals that generate and sustain profitability. As the first bull evaluation

program in the United States to measure individual feed intake (2003-2004), utilize RFI in the selection index (2005) and sell animals with Vytelle’s generated EPD’s for DMI and RFI (20152016) the Reymann Memorial Farm Central Test and Wardensville Bull Test has always been focused on identifying genetically superior animals that will improve the bottom line of commercial cattlemen throughout the United States. Colby Community College hosts a production bull test and sale annually with consignors from Kansas and surrounding states. Approximately fifty bulls are fed a silage, grain, and hay ration in the Vytelle SENSE system from the first of November through March by the beef program students and director. Feed efficiency is then reported to the consignors and published in the sale catalog for prospective buyers. The production sale has seen success reaching buyers as far as California and North Carolina over the prior years to be used for beef cow breeding stock or semen production. OLDS COLLEGE TECHNOLOGY ACCESS CENTRE FOR LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION

The Olds College Technology Access Centre for Livestock Production (TACLP) was established in 2016 as a resource for the livestock sector. Based in Central Alberta, the TACLP is an NSERC-funded centre within Olds College that specializes in applied livestock research, assists with technology development and validation, and provides primary producers with access to information and resources that will increase productivity on their operations. Since beginning operations in 2016, TACLP research and extension activities have focused on increasing production efficiencies, improving animal health and welfare, and

enhancing environmental sustainability. One of the routine services offered to researchers and primary producers is residual feed intake (RFI) testing of beef cattle. Olds College has been providing this service for the industry for almost 20 years, and continues to advance cattle feed efficiency by allowing producers access to feedlot pens with Vytelle SENSE system capacity. Our centre evaluates approximately 550 animals annually and often has space for yearling bulls throughout the testing season. In 2023, the Great Basin Bull Sale was created to provide producers in the western states with performance tested high efficiency bulls. Building on the legacy of Snyder Livestock’s Bulls for the 21st century bull test and sale, the Great Basin Bull Sale provides a venue for western seedstock producers of all breeds to showcase their genetics under a similar format. Bulls undergo rigorous evaluation in several categories as well as efficiency testing to provide a total animal evaluation. Gain, weaning performance, fertility (dam as well as individual), ultrasound, and feed efficiency, make up the categories for scoring. Three test groups are evaluated including early fall, late fall, and spring born bulls. A partnership was also formed with the Nevada Cattlemen’s Association to take over their range bull sale. The range bull division provides a source for age advantaged bulls to be included as well. For consignment information please contact us for information.

TOP 150 PERCENTILE TABLE

Percentile bands tables provide a useful benchmarking resource for breeding values for herds participating in the Vytelle Network Genetic Evaluation. Every week, the percentile bands are updated from the most recent Vytelle Network Genetic Evaluation. Percentile bands allows beef producers to rank animals from the Top 1% of the Vytelle Network (1st percentile) down to the Bottom 1% of the Vytelle Network (99th percentile).

A simplified version of the Percentile bands table is included to the left to allow you to view this data and identify at what band your animals may currently sit and what progress may be needed to move to another band in the evaluation.

By nature of the animals selected for the Top 150 publication, all published animals are in the top 10% of the Vytelle Network for RFI EPD.
