The Hernandez Family – A Traditionally Unique Family By Claudio Alegre

J

ose M. Hernandez, his wife Maritza and son Alex, are Native Floridians who share a history deeply rooted in Cuban culture and South Florida Latin tradition. Jose and Maritza are a simple yet unique couple to meet, the kind of neighbors anyone would want! This is their brief history… They met almost six years ago through a mutual friend; it didn’t take long for them to realize they’d found their soul mate, and took their vows a couple years later. Jose was born in Havana, Cuba and attended Miami Senior High School. He went on to then MDCC and later FIU, where he later graduated with a degree in business and finance. Shortly after he obtained his variable annuities and insurance license, Jose started a financial practice under New England Financial. Today he’s a founding member and managing partner at Plasencia, Hernandez & Guerrero, an investment and financial services firm with their Office in Brickell. When possible he splits his time between the Brickell Office and his home office. ”I love the commute when working from home” he adds while smiling. In addition to helping business owners with their financial needs in insurance and investments, he has been involved with the Kiwanis of Coral Gables-Latin for over 10 years, is an active board member at the Penalver Clinic in little Havana, and is an avid art collector. “Both the Kiwanis of Coral Gables-Latin and the Penalver 4

Clinic are community oriented organizations whose mission is to increase the quality of people’s lives …this is why I chose to get involved with them!” adds Jose. Maritza was born in Miami Beach. A graduate of La Salle High School in Miami, she obtained her education degree in St. Thomas University, and is currently a 1st grade teacher. She enjoys healthy living, exercising and traveling in her spare time. 15 year old Alex is currently a sophomore at La Salle High School following in his mom’s footsteps. Charlie, their Maltese poodle, keeps them on their toes! When they are not working, they are spending time in their community, traveling or hanging out with friends and family. Jose and Maritza don’t necessarily believe in work-life balance, but more so in integrating the two. Jose’s life philosophy has always been: “Live the moment, take action and build a legacy!” When it came time to building their dream home, they followed the same motto. They seized the opportunity, took action and built their home in Coral Gables, 2 blocks from Venetian Pool, in what they describe as a quiet and Zen-like neighborhood. While most people stress over building a brand new home, they took it as a project to share and enjoy, an adventure with a lifestyle purpose! “This is our dream home. We want to make great memories to tell our kids and family about,” added Maritza while visibly excited about their new home.

R esident f e ature They chose Coral Gables as their home because of the proximity to their families, easy access to Miracle Mile and other famous landmarks that make the city-beautiful famous world over. When Jose was approached by GL he was excited, he described trying to figure out ways to meet his new neighbors, without being too intrusive. “We’ve been living here close to a year and would like people to get to know us and vice versa,” Jose shares. “You never just move into a home, you move into a neighborhood, city, parks, and schools …you move into a community!” You can run into Jose and Maritza at any of the many restaurants, cafes, or stores in Coral Gables. Feel free to say hello! It’s easy to see the Hernandez’s are all about community living. “We are people oriented both Maritza and I, we like giving back and feeling part of something bigger than ourselves,” says Jose. “We plan on continuing to get involved in our community and support causes that promote the arts, health and all-around better quality of living.” Those that already know the Hernandez’s describe them as really nice and unassuming people. After five minutes of talking to them, you feel you’ve known them for 10 years. Regardless of their busy schedules they manage to prioritize those things that are important and bring value and meaning to their lives. “Our lives are filled with professional commitments, growing a business, and supporting important causes in our community,” Maritza says. “Coral Gables is an incredibly vibrant community, we are truly grateful to be a part of it and absolutely love living here!” ■

Fa mi ly Day Trip s

Biscayne Bay for the Day By Luis Estrada

C

an you imagine growing up in sunny South Florida and having Biscayne Bay as your backyard, I can. As a boy I had the privilege of being on the waters of Biscayne Bay every Saturday and most Sunday’s. Looking back on it now, I can really appreciate all of the natural beauty I was exposed to. I was shaped into a Naturalist as a result and really enjoy getting my toes wet. It’s rubbed off on my three sons whom love the water, whether it’s the beach or the boat they just can’t get enough. Our last adventure put us Biscayne Bay with the stand-up paddle boards and I was able to glide behind a 13 foot momma manatee and her 4 foot baby calf. It was amazing to watch how the baby rolled around his mom, rubbing his belly on

Tips on Taking Holiday Photos

T

he holiday season is a time where families get together. Many come traveling from afar, so it is an opportunity to take some family portraits. Whether you hire a photographer or set up the tri-pod, make sure you get everyone in the photo so you can cherish the memories to last a lifetime. Here are some hints when taking holiday photos: Take candid photos as well as posed photos. Formal posed photos are great but candid photos tell more of a story. Imagine capturing the childrens’ reactions when opening gifts or your uncle’s reaction when taking the first bite of homemade pie. This documentary approach will bring you back to these special moments that you will treasure. When taking photos of the children, get down to their level to get a better point of view. You get to capture more details and get to see their view point. Squat, kneel and even lay on the floor to get the right perspective. Do not forget to photograph the food, holiday décor and all the little details you worked so hard to prepare. Since most photos will be taken indoors, move your camera from Automatic to Program mode. In Automatic mode, the flash will be going on frequently which will result in washed out-out colors and shadows. Program mode will allow you to have control over the ISO setting to get better photographs in low-light conditions. Lastly, know when to put your camera down. Instead of taking 100 photos of the family opening gifts, take a handful and enjoy the time with your loved ones. Have a Happy & Safe Holiday! Serina Prado Photographer Serina Prado Photography. 6

hers. From brown Pelicans that swoop down to the waters edge while flying in formation like a squadron of fighter planes, to the baby spotted Eagle Rays sitting on the bottom, at the mouth of a mangrove channel waiting for the tide to wash in with their food; the countless wonders that you can enjoy with the family on Biscayne Bay await you. Ask Roger Simon (The Moorings) a great friend of mine whom charters Catamarans on Biscayne Bay so you can schedule one of these memory making and life changing family day trips. Thanks Dad... ■

17 Not-So-Obvious But Unmistakable Warning Signs Your Parent Is Declining in Function and Will Soon Need Help at Home By Claudio Alegre

You know instinctively this day is coming. The day when the next call you’ll get could be from a neighbor, a police officer, or just a total stranger who is trying to help your wandering and disoriented parent. The day they can no longer shop, bathe, or eat by themselves… the day they call you by a different name. Any one scenario above can be pre-planned or even avoided. The key is to know what signs to look for! It’s amazing how much pain and frustration a little bit of planning can save you when the time comes to face a parent’s inevitable decline into a state of permanent convalescence. The question is, when the day comes -will they have the foundation of care you planned and created for them? Now remember, these are not signs that they need help urgently ...but rather not-so-obvious warning signs and clues that now it’s the time to start planning some sort of home care or personalized caregiver program. Ignoring these not-so-obvious warning signs is the reason why almost everyone gets caught unprepared when a situation arises. The result is they are now forced to rush decisions at the worst possible time. So here they are- 17 warning signs that if you are paying attention and like a detective, uncover the right clues, you will save yourself and your parent a pile of pain, frustration and suffering! Why? Because you now know what to look for, and if you know what to look for you can plan ahead. So be on the lookout for: 1. Frequent falls, visible cuts and bruises. 2. Need the help of walker to get around house. 3. When normal conversation stops or takes a depressing tone. 4. Change in appearance and mood. 5. No longer interested in activities and fun events. 6. Excessive arguing and fly-off-the-handle type temper. 7. Unopened meds and unfilled prescriptions. 8. Lack of personal hygiene and bathing, strange odor. 9. Noticeable weight loss, not eating regularly. 10. Unopened bills and personal mail. 11. Frequent fender benders. Look for dents and scratches in car. 12. Lack of housekeeping signs. 13. Worsening of existing chronic conditions. 14. Stale and expired food and drinks. 15. Broken down house appliances and other items. 16. Cancelling doctor visits. 17. Excessive forgetfulness and absent mindedness.

You can complement this list with our very popular Elder Care Guide – and learn how to create a personalized Elderly Care custom plan for a loved one! You can get the free guide at: www.angelhomecareservices.net/long-term-care-guide/ This guide will show you how to build a basic support system at home for your elderly parents with limited coverage and without going broke in the process? You’ll learn things like: • How to leverage the four types of Long Term Care payment sources for maximum value and minimum costs. • How to use our 3-Step-Process and 5-Point-Checklist and get the services you need started. • How to negotiate bottom line rates with caregivers and home care agencies. • How to quickly assess your parent’s finances for Long Term Care and other chronic health conditions…and a half a dozen other hacks and caregiving strategies. So there you go, you now know more than 90% of everyone out there who may be facing an inevitable care giving scenario this week, but they are not armed with the tools you now have. But let’s not keep this information all to ourselves! If you found this post of interest and value, please share it with a friend or a family member, they could be going through a tough time with a parent or a loved one at this very moment. Thank you! ■ Claudio Alegre is the Chief Content Writer for Angel Home Care Services on the Web and Patient and Family Relations Advocate off the Web. He lives in Miami with his wife and three boys.

Christmas Décor Made Simple By Trisha Hiatt

O

ne of the best parts about Christmas is decking the halls, and if you’re in need of some simple ways to do that, keep reading. First of all, some of the supplies you’ll need can be bought at craft shops on sale and also at dollar stores. It’s all about the way you display your vignettes and decorations, not how expensive the décor is. Here is a list of just a few Christmas decorating supplies to begin with:

Ornaments in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors.

• Christmas table linens including napkins, placemats, table runners and/or tablecloths. • The building blocks of a Christmas table can begin with white porcelain dinnerware and serveware with seasonal accent dishes. •

Christmas inspired candles.

• Branches from your backyard such as spruce or pine and pinecones. •

Poinsettias and floral sprigs.

Garlands and wreaths made from boxwood, pine, etc.

• Any other special items such as Santas, Christmas trees, sleighs, reindeer, nutcrackers, angels or snowmen. One of the easiest ways to add some glimmer to your home this holiday season is by adding a beautiful wreath or garland to your home’s front door. Try filling urns with poinsettias and smaller Christmas trees and placing them on either side of the front door. Small terra cotta pots filled with pinecones and red berries can be added to your front porch or entryway. Moving inside, let’s start in the living room. As one of the coziest and most used rooms in the house, the living room will probably be your Christmas tree’s home for about a month, so why not spruce up the surrounding areas? If you have a mantle, try draping a garland along the bottom of it. Get creative and add in whatever floats your boat to the garland—pinecones, orna10

Livin g W e ll ments, lights, red flowers, white flowers—the best part about decorating is that it’s your own artwork. Simple things like candlesticks in odd numbers make wonderful center arrangements for the center of your mantle. Try grouping either three or five candlesticks and top them either with candles with a little sprig from the Christmas tree tied around it or with eye-catching ornaments resting on top of them. I love using candlesticks for displaying other beautiful pieces instead of always just a candle. Don’t forget to hang your stockings! For your coffee table, try putting a Christmas wreath laying flat on the center of the table with a beautiful crystal bowl of ornaments in the middle of the wreath. Or fill a glass bowl with water, cranberries, mistletoe and a floating candle. Essentially anything could go in the middle of the wreath. Try creating a little bit of height difference and a little bit of symmetry at the same time when decorating. Put out some Christmas pillows and throws for the couch for a super cozy feel. Moving onto the heart of the home—the kitchen. The kitchen is a place where so much time is spent cooking, baking, hanging out, and of course, eating. Try hanging a small wreath on a cabinet door or small wreaths on all of your cabinet doors. If you don’t have wreaths, you can try taking a piece of pretty ribbon and draping it down the center of the cabinet. Tie a ribbon to the top and add on an ornament. If you have a windowsill, add in some small pieces such as little snowmen, sleighs or pinecone topiaries with red berries for a Christmas feel. Hang some Christmas towels from your oven door for cute décor and you can even add a rug in front of your kitchen sink. If you have an island or bar in your kitchen, put together a centerpiece with a double-tiered fruit basket filled with apples, oranges, limes, pomegranates, pinecones and sprigs. An arrangement like this can also go in a silver or crystal compote or even a garden urn for a more rustic feel. You can also use a cake plate with a cloche or glass apothecary jars in which to display ornaments as a pretty kitchen display. Christmas lights can be added in for extra light and sparkle. Battery operated lights are the easiest and can be found at Walmart. The dining room or kitchen table can be dressed up so easily. Start with Christmas placemats, a table runner, or a tablecloth. No table runner? No problem! Take three strips of wide ribbon and drape them across the table in the center. Add a centerpiece to your table. Clear glasses of

any kind filled with cranberries and topped with hydrangeas make for a stunning display. When decorating for Christmas, include the bathroom and bedroom as well. Tea towels, guest napkins, candles, and even a tiny Christmas tree make for an inviting Christmas bathroom. In the bedroom, add a garland to your bed frame or on top of your dresser, and if you’re like me, you’ll love adding a Christmas tree in your room and enjoying the sparkling lights at night while reading in bed. Hang wreaths in the center of your windows and drape a beautiful ribbon on either side of the wreath, tying it to the drapes. A bow can be tied atop the wreath for an attractive display. I hope this gave you some insight into how easy decorating can be— use your imagination and your options are limitless! Happy decorating and may this be your best holiday yet! ■

Do you want to discover new things about your neighbors? Want to be in the headlines? Want to see your pictures published?

We’re looking for neighborhood families, business owners or individuals who have a story to share. That story might be to celebrate an award you’ve won, to share your recent vacation, or simply to introduce yourself and share a message with neighbors. We are bringing local to the next level and want this magazine to serve you. Let us know what you hope to see in these monthly pages.

Here’s how to get started. Use these prompts to fire up your imagination:

✓ Brainstorm what you would like to see in this magazine and what you’d like to share with neighbors.

✓ Has your family taken a vacation recently? Share your amazing photos from Walt Disney World or a national park!

✓ Do you have any special talents in your family? Do you play musical instruments? Do you have a band? Are you running

a marathon? Are you the next Einstein? Do you make and sell crafts?

✓ Business owners, the community starts right outside your front door. The family feature story is a great place to introduce your

services to those closest to you.

✓ Volunteers, are you passionate about charity work? Do you organize a fundraiser each year for a nonprofit or walk to fight

disease? Your story might motivate others to get involved, too.

✓ Are you the leader of a book club or bunco group? Do you organize the dinner club or ladies’ night out? Show neighbors how

much fun you are having and invite newcomers to join you with an article and photos.

✓ If you are involved in your homeowners’ association, use this magazine to inform neighbors of events, neighborhood activities,

yard sales, new officers, meeting minutes, contact info for board members, or other announcements.

The process is easy. You send us your ideas or recommend neighbors, and we will talk with you, write the article and gather photos. Go to www.bestversionmedia.com and click “Submit Content.” Or, simply e-mail your content coordinator at lestrada@bestversionmedia.com. Remember, we want stories featuring you and your neighbors!
