URBAN LOOKS FOR TODAY THROUGH THE FADING TRADITION OF CHINESE CLOGS. THE MUST-HAVES THIS SPRING

In the olden days, clogs are the preferred choice of footwear for women when working on wet surfaces, particularly during washing of clothes, working in kitchen or going to the bathroom due to their raised wooden platform which people step on. Clogs were also preferred in wet markets, as it prevent users from getting their feet dirty in the wet market. Clogs were considered sturdy, durable and can be worn on any surfaes. They are made with simple materials like a thick chopping board, a chopper, a paring knife, nails and hammer. The introduction of shoes and later modern footwear suited to every need and taste. Little room for business was left for the clog makers. People begun considering the clogs noisy and cumbersome. By 1957, many clogs makers had closed shop. Many clog makers simply went out of business slowly over the years. In 1984, only three to four shops remained in Singapore selling clogs. With continued economic losses, increasing costs of raw materials and rent, most of the clog makers that remained too ceased operations.

The vibrant colours portray an impression that the clog is beaming with energy. Fading tradition is usually represented by a very faint impression or faint colours and thus, in an attempt to instill life into the fading tradition, vibrant and high intensity colours are being used. The clog appears to be personified by having a human quality, breathing. White circles can be seen on the clog which may appear to be that of oxygen bubbles. These give an impression of life. Colours adds liveliness to things, thus, with such a colour clog, traditions will be revived.

Click clock click clock. The sound of clogs is being put under scrutiny by the usage of concentric circles which are placed differently. Similarly, we can also infer that the sound made by the clogs consists of a rhythm, similar to those of a clogs. A bridge is formed between living things and clogs. This will give the clog a brand new look, an attempt to bring back a tradition that has been hidden for decades.

Existence of vegetation, plants and butterflies all symbolises living things. These animated objects on the clogs give it a feelings of life, signifying how the tradition of clogs is brought back to live once again.

Here’s an exploration of what the artist portray ‘play’. The employment of colourful circles of different size gave radiance to the design, seemingly trying to say that a new life of radiance is now given to the Chinese clogs, and it is not the time for it to get popular back again.

Hi everyone. Firstly, many thanks for your

time in attending Clogs Falish Spring 2011. There have been numerous sleepless nights before I came up with this idea of a fashion show for Traditional Chinese Clogs. One very keen observation of mine is that fewer and fewer people are wearing clogs. In fact, you will not be able to see a single person wearing a pair of clogs on the streets.

The purpose of this fashion show is an attempt to evoke a fashion scene out of the dying fading tradition of traditional chinese clogs. This fashion show and catalogue serves as a medium to increase publicity on clogs and allow more people to know about the history and come-about of clogs. At the end of it the show, I hope to be able to reignity the fire in people, heightenging their passion for clogs and revamping the clogs to give it a newer look.

Wearing of clogs used to be a daily routine, where people wears them almost everywhere. Even for myself, I remember wearing them around in my house’s bathroom. Chinese clogs was like a part of life, even more so for older generations.

I wish to bring the tradition of wearing clogs back to live by inducing a new spective in people’s mindset. I want to eradicate the thought of clogs as cheap footwear which is obselete and reignite their interest in wearing clogs.

Chinese Clogs are a fading tradition mainly due to the amount of hard labour put into making it and the low profit margin. Moreover, with the introduction of shoes and modern footwear that suited to every need and taste, little room have been left for business for clog makers. People begun considering the clogs noisy and cumbersome. Many then preferred the nicer designs plastic sandals or slippers over the tradition chinese clogs. While people now have a lot of other choices in terms of footwear, clogs have become obsolete.

The concept behind all the designs are derived from the fading tradition of chinese clogs, and each of them are carefully designed in line with the Spring fashion show. I enjoyed the process while coming out with all those designs, and I definitely hope that each and every one of you will share the same sentiments as me at the end of the show. Now, sit back and relax. Have a pleasant night and I hope you will enjoyed it too.
