I am currently in my final semester of the Master of Architecture & Certificate in Urban Design programs from the University of Maryland. My work experience includes high end residential design, as well as assisting in the fundamental architecture courses at UMD. I have a broad understanding of digital programs and design techniques, and I am passionate about broadening my knowledge of the architectural field. I have taken leadership roles in many student organizations and believe that collaboration is fundamental to design. I am actively pursuing full-time work experience, and hope to bring my skills to a firm that values these qualities. Architects have the responsibility to create spaces for the betterment of our planet and all those who inhabit it, and I am excited to join this mission.

The Woodlawn Visitor Center is centered between Frank Lloyd Wright’s PopeLeighey House and the Woodlawn Mansion. This building connects the two sites to make a flexible space for research, events, and exhibitions. An investigation into parti studies, wall sections, and the overall morphology of both buildings, combined with modern structural and sustainability technology, led to this design.

This project and course provided time to research many structural techniques to deepen our understanding of the precedent Usonian home as well as our proposal. To diversify the spaces and get a well-rounded analysis of structure, enclosure, mechanical systems, and materiality, three wall types are included in this building.

Entrance & Collaboration Space Woodlawn Visitor Center provides necessary functional spaces for the events that both the Mansion and Pope-Leighey House can use. The open floor plan allows for the spaces to adapt depending on the research, gathering, or exhibits about the two historic buildings. The materials and structure will be long lasting and environmentally conscious for all future visitors and users. 11

Site Plan 12

This intervention responds to the issue of pedestrian mobility near the Kennedy Center, which is isolated from the L’Enfant urban planning of the DC context due to the complex overpass and ramp system of Route 66 and Rock Creek Parkway. Iterations of picturesque, classical, and contemporary garden designs combined with sustainable adaptations to the landscape connect the National Mall to Rock Creek Park while creating affordable housing and a walkable street network.

By removing the majority of the highways, vegetated landscapes are created for relaxing. The additional housing, monuments, and museums continue the flow from the National Mall towards the Kennedy Center. The pillars commemorate those who have been displaced across the world due to war, colonialism, slavery and other social issues.

Making more pedestrianfriendly places in DC can coincide with environmentally friendly practices like water retention, green roofs, and permeable surfaces. Introducing this land back into the public realm creates more opportunities for development.

Booming Business on the Bridge

Sustainably Supporting Baghdad is a revitalization strategy that strives to improve riverfront districts by focusing on restoring features that work and revitalizing space in environmentally, ecologically, and socially sustainable ways. The goal is to knit two communities back together using their shared resource: the Tigris River.

Naila always worries due to the limited places women and children feel safe or desire to go in Baghdad. Adding back traditional ponds, fountains, and vegetation means Naila can take her family to a nice community space.

User Experiences

Adbul and his sons own an expanding business in the Shorja Market. Their family is also growing and needs more room. New markets south of the river will help their small business grow, and the mixed use spaces now offer family space. Sustainable materials and energy sources increase safety and longevity.

Amina and her friends do not feel safe on the busy streets and markets or the desolate riverfront. Bike lanes, lighting, and mixed use spaces will draw people to these areas at all times of the day. Amina cannot wait to feel healthy, happy, and safe at the new park near the river!

Site Section B: Bridge

The area has not been utilized or protected, resulting in unusable, unsafe, and unhealthy spaces. Al-Karkh is a traditional residential neighborhood while Al-Rusafa contains government buildings, tourist attractions, and bazaars. Sustainably Supporting Baghdad proposes that the way to fix these issues is sustainability, and Market Street will be an example of how to perfect this. Spaces will be socially sustainable by reintroducing safe public space and healthy living. Activating existing and new interior and exterior spaces intertwines with the loss of cars, more accessible attractions, and clear views to other nodes all day. Drinking water, vegetation, and evaporative cooling help the health of residents.

Economic sustainability will follow with redeveloping upper floors of bazaars into homes and inserting commercial spaces below homes to allow mixed-use spaces on both sides of the river and on the riverfront. Renewable energy and sustainable construction practices also bring jobs and reliability. Using the landscape to its advantage will beautify the city, support the environment, and keep citizens healthy as part of ecologically sustainable development. Pedestrian, bike, and boat paths improve connectability and decrease car reliance and pollution. Restoring native ecosystems will bring land back to its traditional roots. By following these themes, restoring and supporting Baghdad is possible.
