Thesis

Designing happiness for an inclusive society

Ethos -Finland is ranked as the happiest country in the world -Architecture’s social responsibility is to increase happiness in society -The question is where does this happiness come from, and how can JKMM implement it? -Buildings are built for technology and business; instead, culture, knowledge, and wellbeing are needed for a sustainable and happy society

-Happiness > Wellbeing, Knowledge, Culture -By following their principles, the firm experiments with all typologies of work, at many scales, while sticking to tradition when appropriate but adding a contemporary feel to emphasize the existing

Conclusion -These buildings all follow the design principles of nature,

human scale, experimentation, and trying to achieve happiness with knowledge, wellbeing, and culture -these are all community spaces, and we have seen how important community is to Scandinavia -their domestic spaces are community based, not stand alone homes or skyscrapers -Their cities have welcoming public venues to allow for culture, knowledge and wellbeing -HDI is very high in Finland, as well as Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, because of this importance -Nature is preserved and even mimicked in the buildings, while natural materials are always used and locally sourced -JKMM follows tradition, and breaks with it in a respectable way to improve the spaces -As the first generation without connection to Aalto, they try and honor his designs instead of shying away and contrasting them greatly

-This can be said about all of their work, which is about including everyone and allowing for meaningful places of human interaction, which foster happiness
